"Each episode focuses on a single celebrity estate planning snafu familial fight or even just a good example of the power of proper planning and from that high profile and often ridiculous example myself and a guest attempt to boil boil these ample down to some lessons that advisers can use with their more typical clients. Celebrity estates who details are often more bombastic generally generally face the same obstacles and issues as those regular people just with the volume turned up making them interesting invaluable case studies. I guess today. Hey is Bruce Bruce Hofmeister. I is a vice president. Well strategist at Wilmington. Trust is responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive financial state. He planning and wealth transfer plans for high net worth families and entrepreneurs as part of the National Business Owners Advisory Services Group. Bruce worked closely the clients and their advisors to define each client specific goals and objectives for developing an appropriate plan. Thanks for joining us. Bruce Thank you for having me okay. So the topic of today's episode is the legendary Entertainer Liberace. The height of his fame from the nineteen fifties to the nineteen seventies. Liberace was the highest paid entertainer in the world with established concert residencies in Las Vegas international touring schedule. He has not not one but two stars on the Hollywood walk of fame. liberace embraced the lifestyle of flamboyant excess on stage living up to his nickname because Mr showmanship rumors of homosexuality how him throughout his career he never came out during his life publicly and he brought and won several reliable lawsuits against various publications the also supposedly appeared in public with a number of beards. Sort of fake girlfriends if you will to refute any allegations a in a twenty eleven interview comedy Legend Betty White Herself claims that she acted as a pure liberace on numerous occasions on the also kept secret the HIV Avi Diagnosis. That would eventually his death from pneumonia in nineteen eighty seven. The fact that he had aids was actually only discovered during a rogue autopsy by the Riverside County Coroner which was against the families and the doctor's orders and a bit of a change of pace the constantly looking at this episode took place during liberace's life and didn't really directly involved his estate. I'm speaking of course about the from his palimony case brought against Rachi by former chauffeur and live in lover. Scott Thorson relationship made famous by the book and recent film beyond the Candelabra. I met Liberace nineteen seventy seven as a seventeen year. Old who still part of the foster care system. Despite the forty year age difference between them to allegedly became lovers and Thorson was even incorporated into liberace's acts as a rhinestone clad chauffeur and moved into liberace's extravagant mansion and travel the world of sadly relationship abruptly ended in nineteen eighty two when Thorson was forcibly ejected from their shared home by Liberace's entourage of a dueling allegations of infidelity on the Puerto Liberace and Thorson Soco's drug addiction addiction. Among other things thorson eventually sued for one hundred and thirteen million in palimony. Just a quick note about Palomino. That's an actual legal. You'll term. I was just a colloquial combination of alimony and pal coined by an attorney during a case actually involving Hollywood star Lee Marvin and a former living deliver his who took his surname. It's basically shorthand for dividing financial assets and real property on the termination of personal living relationship with parties. Aren't legally elite married. You can check out Marvin V. Marvin if you WANNA know more or if you just like celebrity dirt sourcing claimed in his nineteen eighty two lawsuit. That liberace had pledged that when Thorson lived in his full-time Secretary Chauffeur animal trainer lover. Who paid seventy thousand dollars? A year for life up to thirty thousand dollars a year for pet care and we'll be entitled to the use of one of the pianist luxury homes in palm springs or Beverly Hills for the rest of his life forcing clam dude for his own career. And had it liberace's request even undergone facial surgery to more closely conform his facial features to those of liberace expected to spend the rest of his life with entertainer. And be buried beside him in the liberace family clot thorson fought and largely lost highly public. Glick battle both in court and in the public opinion ultimately privately settled in one thousand nine hundred eighty six for seventy five thousand dollars in cash two dogs another one hundred sixty s Rolls Royce and two other automobiles according to sources of time. So I've chosen. This story. Provide an example of just how little financial financial protection news to exist for LG to chew couples under the law. Those in literally went directly from foster care to lap of luxury to finding himself suddenly homeless an unemployed with basically new recourse available. Luckily we currently live in the post window world where LGBTQ couples or afforded access to marriage the highly valuable bundle of rights. Come with so bruce. That's it right everybody's totally equal now. Endo story now that's not exactly true. you still have the issues of a dissolution of the relationship and how assets are going to be dissolved and how a court would look at the contributions of the parties to the marriage dividing up the assets. So it's it's it's appropriate for members of the LGBTQ should be key community to have prenups just like it is for opposite sex couples. You still have issues to resolve a dissolution of the relationship that that won't necessarily mean that there's an equal division of assets when a relationship is dissolved. And so it's very important for the party's when getting married to sit down together and work out exactly. What the responsibilities of the parties are going to be in the marriage? And if there's there's a break up a marriage and we just expanded what exactly you mean by pre-nup I think for the vast majority of sort of Lehman pre-nup is kind kind of a dirty word. So advantages of incorporating is here. We'll everyone looks at a prenuptial agreement or a lot of people look at prenuptial agreements agreements. And say it's something that's being forced on the parties in order to a more at worst case scenario but it actually is something that should be down in the good times before relationship as a relationship is being entered into so the parties have a good understanding of what their responsibilities are going to be in the marriage. How are they going to manage their finances? Who's going to contribute to what If you have a relationship where you have one party. WHO's earning the majority of the income of marriage then what What provision visions would be made for The payment of bills when you have the Non Earner essentially helping build a home or helping build the business spent not receiving any compensation for it and not be able to save any money for themselves that are totally dependent upon the other party. So it's important that when you put together when when a relationship is formed that they have a good understanding of that and a pre nup is not a dirty word and the sense is that it's always looking for what's GonNa go wrong in a relationship it's also a guide or road map to what can go right and a relationship because because it is so tight the open conversation and open communication about exactly how the parties are going to be. Hey financially in a relationship ship and so no. We're talking about a prenuptial agreement. But that assumes that there's nuptial in the first place where assuming here that the couple is taking advantage of of the ability to marry on what about a case where a couple. LGBTQ couple has for some reason rock either has has been unable to marry because you know either refused to them or they've just lived a certain way for thirty five years and then they don't want to change it. Well it's important to have a partnership agreement To have something in place to if you have a relationship that's gone on for thirty five years. It would be important there to understand what the parties are going to do for each other in doubt you know assuming that the relationship is going to last for the rest of their lives and and so just having a relationship that goes on for thirty five years does not mean that either party has any right to the assets of the other the party upon death. So it's very important there that they have some sort of arrangement between parties even if it is just have their wills in place or or their state plan in place so that it clearly lays out who gets what upon death and then in a relationship you can still have a partnership agreement. Even if you're not married that defines how you allocate your assets in case there's dissolution of the partnership it's important to stress here that these themes of financial and thereby power imbalance in a relationship. But that's not just a heterosexual problem right as as the liberace example. Oh I think clearly illustrates right. There's plenty of all types of relationships after face. The issue of of a one partner comes in with way more or one partner has willingly sort of subsumed. They're earning power in order to assist the the whole on these sorts of agreements be they. Prenuptial Agreement Mentor partnership agreements or key to sort of protecting the party with less power. Yeah it is. It's very important. It's also you need to look at what your debt situation is when you come into a relationship and what the spending habits are of both parties so that you understand and can Dan communicate freely about how you're going to do with the debt and what happens in the event that the debt is paid off by the partner who has more money and and student loans is good example and then when party you had the debt say there are doctor goes out and suddenly becomes a hiring higher producing spouse in the income. What contributions do you consider has been made by the party that help pay off the debt and then subsequently is the a partner with the lesser income? Earning capability glad you brought up the idea of spending unleashing some studies. And obviously. And we're trying to generalize an entire group here not everything is GonNa apply to everyone so please take all of this with great. Assault blessing studies.

"I say disks because I mean, it could be albums LP wax, vinyl anything. Well, that's a I just realized I was only a four year span that's more than two year, sir. That's a lot by nine hundred fifty four it jumped to nearly seventy discs and sold over four hundred thousand albums, so that's seven years from forty seven to fifty four right. Yeah. Seven years seven eight years, seventy discs a ten year averaging. That's ridiculous. So his most popular single was Ave Maria, obviously, not an original. But he sold more than three hundred thousand copies of it cover. So. Well, well, what else can you say about that really in his life? He received six gold records, which is impressive as good for anybody. And I would say. Platinum is most impressive. But when you're popping out ten discs year, the fact that any of them sells over one hundred thousand alone is insanely impressive. Maybe he intentionally wanted to keep them at gold records knowing his style. This is true. He was really big into gold. This is true. We'll talk about that. In him was not as flashy. Here's the part where things start to get a little shady. So there were lawsuits and stuff. Let's us talk about this in nineteen fifty-six an article in the Daily Mirror by columnist who went by the name Cassandra Cassandra depends on how you want to pronounce it if you really fancy or just a normal dude, but his real name writing as Cassandra his name was William Connor, and he described Liberace as am unquote here, the summit of sex, the pinnacle of masculine feminine and neuter everything that he calms she and it can ever want a deadly winking sniggering snuggling crewman plated Sint impregnating, luminous quivering, giggling, fruit-flavored mincing is covered. Heap of mother love in quote, a description which strongly implied that Liberace was homosexual. So now nineteen fifty-six. He's killing the game. Yeah. He's huge. Yeah. He is the name and also nineteen fifty-six. Being a homosexual in any circle. Absolutely not could be the end of your life that you can't especially in show business. I mean, there are things you can. And can't do things you can and cannot be seen doing. I mean in fifty six I don't think you could even be shown wearing two piece bathing suit on television as we say on TV, the husband and wife had to sleep in separate beds. Yeah. The the Brady bunch thing that was starting to come around in the sixties late sixties? I think and they are actually in the same bed. Eventually, so it's kind of a scandalous and Mike Brady boy I can name but actually ended up being a homosexual. Oh, yeah. That was weird for me. So Liberace's sent a telegram after this came out and doesn't sound like this was slander sounds like the guy was just being excited to you know, just explaining what he saw nobody knew what they were looking at really like when lady Gaga. Comes out wearing crazy stuff. You're like what in the world is that? I mean, we all know she's very talented now. But anyway, so Mr. Liberace Senate telegram that read quote, what you said hurt me very much. I cried all the way to the Bank. And then what? And he then sued the magazine for libel. Well, he testified in a London court that he was not homosexual, and he had never taken part in any kind of hemlock homosexual acts will that's so he has feelings were hurt. And he said, I am not gay, and I've never done anything like that. So I'm going to see you. We did that. And he actually won the suit partly on the basis of the author of that articles use of the derogatory expression, quote fruit-flavored. Really? Yeah. I mean, a lot of a lot of that whole. Civil court case was contingent on the fact on if the authored new or not that that fruit was a derogatory or what was it drugs or tour? Yeah, it's a yeah. A term for homosexual in the United States thing because he was a London author and that was more slaying in the US than it was over in London..

Another slapper. What are the banner say? They just have his album credentials. Oh, he's like, he's got like most consecutive like nights sold out there like his just like he Baz Square Garden is his like his home gym. Basically. That's where he works out. Pretty good home gym have it is, but it's like very embarrassing because it's not opposite hall. It is very much where the Knicks play. Hayes, white, right beside like clad, Fraser, the Lord's prayer, Billie, Joe, hey, man, listen, his banners, massive, not small. Friends. I was like anyone wait and see him. I can't wait that long. "No, we'll save actually now about them. So let's see. Eighties Atta here. I'm guessing we had Westbrook so be stiff hardened Westbrook Jaanus. Yeah. I feel like this is where Steph goes is between Stephan Jaanus for me. Pro? Yeah, I'm thinking about it hard. Eating reinvent the game. You understand. Might. Moving forward. I'm going to bet against him. It's like three people on the court after Yannis fives or simply to menu. Now we put the other to the locker room. I, I think I'm surprised hard. It hasn't got more love to like he gets it in the mentions. Like all rockets fans has hard, not number one. I don't know. Maybe it'd be six. I don't know. I think what it's going to borrow out to, we're going to get. Yalla's next, like the people Janas next like Kawai will probably go. I assume he'll be next that we added and then Steph will go. That will basically be Westbrook. I haven't one on one. If I guess. Who will be a pit. Tweet, westward odd. Yes, Westford, go harden. Well, let's fucking fight about it. Okay. I think I think harden will win my just I fucking love Westbrook so much l. of everything about. A better player. I think they're very like almost like I ever always was guys way better this guys. I think they're pretty fucking even to be quite enough. Said you take the other show, not this one, cut it out. If you're when you're right, you're right. But I. I don't. I don't see this giant Casselton between them like others do. That's right. Chasm, oh boy. Now there. Magic in Larry other be linked together forever. Newsly probably very close the. They're the last two MVP's. It's. Doc you, they're, they're both. What finished second in the year they didn't win, probably. What's on the final vote this year? Right. It was harden AD. Let's see. LeBron must've been there. So yellow bra. It was fourth. So got on the. Hard like nineteen second-place finisher he's got like the most all time. Right. LeBron was second eighty was third. Lillard was fourth whispered was fifth. Yeah, that's. I mean, that's wrong. Feels like. Willard didn't have to counteract Carmelo. Anthony on his team have more winters though. All right, fair Durant was seventh-last. You could lower. Also feels wrong. Yes. Aware where's LeBron for you? Because I know you head coach of this year. I'm assuming you have LeBron above coli this year. Yeah, yellow brought to. I just switched switched what our vote is. Good. You. But he also might be like retie collide just took all of last year off. LeBron might be taking this year off, but he's still gonna like show up to the games and get his like twenty. Seven seven. Oh yeah, he he's get record chase who shrill. Oh yeah. You. He's twenty seven, eight nine last year. It be just fine. I mean he'll be twenty seven, seven, seven at the minimum until he's like, pretending. Yes, retired. I agree. So, yeah, that would be my. I mean, I don't why I would love to jam Celtic in those top ten. I don't think any of them are like really top fifteen. Israel, like sixteen is where I'd start thinking about Celtics. I feel like around nine or ten people are gonna want kyri. And. I wouldn't have them there but also votes going to go. So we'll see right. Trying to think who. Like who's going to beat this back half of ten. See, I think. Like the, I think he depend on how they do. He if he likes plays. Oh, you're, he'll be in the race. I think. I think the pace are gonna take steps all the deep OB and the race. Steph always be there just because he's very good. All right. I'm just saying Chris, Paul. I, I can't just because I don't think Bill. I don't think he'll go pedal to the medal like he needs to for MVP. Play games and I'm not even talking about that top ten for MVP. I'm talking about for our top ten. Oh, no, heavens. Like Embiid. When do you think he'll get on the in the vote around eight? Yeah. Yeah. I feel like he whenever he and co. Why on the ballot? For the first time. That's what I'm interested to see because I can see the case for either. But I think like Russell go far as hard gophers, Jaanus. Those three. And then I feel like. In being co, I have mentioned Vogel..

"Love. McMahon's magic minute every Tuesday and Friday just transitions in and out with like the magic. We'll made a free throw signed. Wow. I feel like Chicago's going to be fun to watch the kind of the opposite of the magic where they only have offense and absolutely zero defensive speak of. Here's the thing. I don't even know if the magic have defense. They're just long. Feel like individually, they're good defenders, but you're right. I don't know if they're good team defense at all. I mean, I have Biondo back there last year. He wouldn't all he's got his defense. They still writing. But how there I think. Say they're more teams that I'm excited did not watch any of, and I think Chicago's one. Oh. Well, no, very early. 'cause like Levine's doing fun stuff. I don't really care shooting forty percent from everywhere. Well, he will. As cooking. It's at least fun to watch just 'cause like, I didn't know you could jump that high on dunk. I'll be able to make fun of Chris done, which is always a plus true. I am interested to see Wendell Carter in the NBA because killed summer league. Obviously, he was good at Duke. I just don't know ally. I can't place his ceiling at all. And obviously we won't know that rookie year could takes at least two years to know guys ceiling, he's done. That's finished product. Everyone knows that. Yes, it's twenty first birthday. So I'm just interested to see because I feel like he's going to be really good, but I also just want to like, see, pan out. I don't know what exactly what his finished products going to look like. He's also another guy. I wish he had a point gore. Duns. He's fine, but I wouldn't find defend and had his offense of moment. But I don't say here Levin is like a guy that can get a young big involved. We'll see if magic free Hoy bird get the ball moving around there, but. I'm not. I'm not looking forward to watching any of them. Charlotte sounds like a train wreck to watch. Yeah. Orlando. Now. Dallas. Yeah, I'm intercede. Trae young and the Alice, I'm interested to see dodge. Dodge again, like if Dennis Smith can take a step because I feel like I feel like his work ear, nose, watching the Mavericks anyways, but it feels like his rookie year they may not have even happened. I didn't hear anyone even mention his name of the dunk contest. Like the most. Like average rookie. I'm guessing fifteen three and four. Oh fifteen. I thought he was kidding. Numbers meant. Absolutely nothing. Let's see here we go house if Tafoya fifteen four and five. So better than I thought forty thirty one sixty nine shooting. So not not a great marksman yet. That part sounds right. But again, he he was a project all along like he's twenty. So yeah mentions. Yeah, they play off each other. Yeah, Dallas could be an dark, like, I'm I'm gonna enjoy the last of Derek for. I mean, this could be it. So whenever I checked on, that'll be cool. Oh yeah, he's done kiss Dirk. When he comes to town, I've never seen him alive. I don't know if I have a massive. You have never, Dirk, and. The only person I really wanna see this year that I haven't already saying it is crazy lucky. If I saw dark, it was like twelve years ago. No. Earlier. Rookie year. Just getting off the plane. Yeah. What about like? Oh, six. I can't remember another time. I would have had the opportunity to see. Which is crazy that he's still doing basketball. Yeah. Reasonably well at the right? Yeah. See, I'm I'm in on them. The knicks. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Because I like porzingas is not ready for the star of the season. Is he. No, they said they're gonna take it slow with them. I believe I read that which is the correct decision to see like how they look like Knox is gonna get a lot early, which I could be like, it'd be like Tatum like we wasn't asked to do these things. Now drives me to do them. Give me some time to learn. Maybe I can. Yeah, I was just waiting for someone to ask. Yeah. And then I'll turn nineteen four. I look forward to seeing what steps Frankie bigger physically. I don't know if I've seen him..

"I feel like the rockets don't care all that much about. I had I was thinking about, I was like, I liked it. They get marquees Chris, I think I don't like anything else. They did this summer. Yeah, it's just like mellows gonna be there. They got rid of Reza. Capellas back compels not like us. Very good basketball players now must watch television right. Hide hardens, gonna, shoot, fifteen free throws Chris. Paul is gonna dribble a lot. Yeah, I'm Bob moon, went to the clippers. So. Pita Tucker center helped him a lot with keys that you can do that over eighty two games like right, doesn't like a lot on him. And if he goes down, I don't knock on wood. I don't know who plays that role. Asking a lot of Chris, and I think him in this role where he's always got a hall of fame ball handler on the court. I think definitely get some good ad of them, but. Yeah, that's just leap. I just remember that a one play Chris had where he am believe we went out and he said a high pick and roll, and then. Crash down. Fan like tip slammed. It may just covered so much space and such a short period of time that I feel like dantonio can utilize. Just that human being again. Agreed. And he might have three point shot. Like it hasn't blows early. Wease. I was gonna say, if he has the judge Smith green light and that's probably a good thing with off your like he will like this kind of. Like dantonio whole thing now before he's like he wanted Steve Nash to do whatever you wanted pretty much want everybody to do, whatever they wanna do, like we'll figure it out..

"We've got money to spend anyways, not going to hurt us. Really. He takes Levy takes leap if not, we have two first round picks because we probably don't have our own two first round picks, so they have sons. I wouldn't do it though. If I'm Minnesota, I'm like protecting those picks. I'm trying to gins trading Jimmy to Miami. And then I'm basically counting Justice and bam and whatever pick I get from Miami is my new first round picks, and I'm just trying to rebuild that way. Would if they tell Miami that you take Butler, whichever take Williams to like that's the tax. I mean, Riley could make it work. I'm sure of it, but it's a heavy tax. Yeah, like I said, a dang. It's like, you know, we'll forget those three years, but those four years at thirty five Miller pot. Good luck. Would you still take him if you're Miami. Miami such a weird place. 'cause like what a shock you spoil Sturgis made Wiggins much better? No, not at all right. Buddy. Not name tubes will make Wigan much better. That's what I mean. So it would be it is a heavy tax in the moment, but like three years from now it's like, oh, yeah. Wow. Andrew Wiggins. He's like competing for an all-star spot. James Johnson is guys like on the fringes of the fringes, waiters getting all these guys pay probably too much, but pay. Ellington's had a career year, bam, looks promising to him. So. If I probably would end up leading Butler wall just build a team around Wiggins. A Wiggins haters would be fire? Yes, it would. I don't know. I think maybe that's what they're they're hashing out right now. They're like, you gotta take Wiggins, please. Please allow them. I don't know. I mean players that he would have to send that would have to be like Whiteside corrects in Chris Bosh. You just have that salary. I didn't know Josh Whitson. Sorry, signed for the next four years. I don't think I would want to give that up. No, I like the, I like all of the heater kind of a like Celtics, four years ago type position where they have like a lot of guys who'd be great as a really good teams like number three or four guy. And they just don't have that number one or two guy in Miami right now. Like Butler in theory, is that guy? But if if he's your number one guy, you're not winning much if he's number two guy, are they winning the east now within the next three years? I don't think so. Still comfortably, put them behind Boston, Philly, Milwaukee. Star Toronto? Yeah. So I don't know what Butler is your number two guy gets you anymore. Yeah, and I don't. I feel like a lot of these guys, like if people will want to play with him. I don't know who right now wants to play with them. Carrying carry demands a lot. That'd be infuriating. When. But there's white sad to decline right. And they've just got forty million caps ways. Well, Riley just shows up to that meeting with a large sack filled with thirty million dollars. Like I'll just give you this right now if you decline deal. Yeah, might sat ops out..

"So you know, one has to sort of go through life as if you're going through life and go through all the motions which you are, but you're also wear the whole time that you're sort of hiding something and you're there's something in authentic. And of course that's challenging. But I think the flip side of it is that it it kind of makes you a little bit sharper. And perhaps you know, one has to live a slightly more vivid fantasy life as a gay, and maybe that's the source of gay creativity. I don't know. It's something I think about a lot and I don't stain. It's weird. When you think about some of the most brilliant people in the history of the world and their contributions. So many of them were gay. Yeah, we're like a creative Liberace. Yes, exactly. I read and you can correct if this is wrong that you basically haven't had any commitment issues that you you bought a house together or you rent an apartment together, eighteen months in how did you to just clap is on each other and no, this is it and make it work all these years. We just had really low expectations. Yeah, I was like, oh, he'll do actually the uniform. This is very New York. So Sleiman had just bought this fabulous apartment when I first met him and it was an apartment that was kind of legendary night always noticed it. And when I found out he bought it, I was like, oh, you'll do now. That was really about the nice. It was one hundred percent about the apartment.
