"Something called an E V toll, which stands for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, And this was built by a California startup called Joby Aviation. Listen to the specs, battery powered craft six propellers. That you can hardly even here. These two people as a range of 150 miles, but These air taxis. This is really something. They can go 200 MPH Wow, 200 MPH just to give you some perspective. Is that when you're jetting around at 40,000 Square feet and say private aviation, you're going I don't know 400 MPH, Maybe in a big jet. You're going 500 MPH. If you're going in a little Cessna, 1 72, and you're just landing, you know, maybe maybe you're going or you can take it off. Maybe you're going 75 100 MPH. Now this thing's 200 MPH. So you can get from one side of town to the other in just a couple of minutes. Flight testing actually began in late August at a job aviation site near Big Sur California ended this week. Now they're analyzing all the data. It's too early to say if NASA could actually make this air attacks Taxi a reality anytime soon. Because let's just face it. They need to plan it, Uh, number two, a flexible display. That's hardest glass. What is that flexible display has been used for smartphones. Computers, TVs. It's a totally evolving tech. They have got a lot of kinks. But LG Electronics says that it's developed a new material that acts as the cover of a foldable display now the outermost layers what protects the fragile screen from damage? So l G camp here, this material that's called real folding window. Unlike existing films tempered glass, it has a coding. That will prevent fold impressions and stuff like that. So instead of being limited to just bending one direction, though, this is also something you can bend inward and outward, and it's adorable. LG's has been tested. And folded 200,000 times. It's hard as glass, even though it's just a few micro millimeters thick. This is really something. I mean, I know I don't really always get excited about a lot of new tech, but the thing about everything that's coming with this thing They're going to sound too. Foldable Manufacturers in 2023. Of course, we're going to keep up this story. We're gonna tell you more about it as it unfolds. Thank you. Number three, just walk out on Amazon. Just walk out as the name of Amazon's automated checkout technology is being yet to its go convenience stores and fresh grocery stores. So basically you go there. You can just grab it in the end, you walk out. That's it. You don't need to go the checkout line altogether. How does it work? You walk into the store? You do one of three things you use an installed reader to scan an app on your phone. And you insert a payment card linked to your Amazon account. The third is simply waving your hand over biometric.

Undersea Fiber-Optic Cables Make Superb Seismic Network

"Researchers from Berkeley published research and science looking at how undersea fiber optic cables could be turned into a network of seismographs offs since light traveling through the cables get scattered and distorted when a cable shifts. It's possible to use this back-scatter effect to measure movements up to a few nanometers. Using a technique called distributed acoustic sensing the team was able to detect ocean floor seismic activity using twenty kilometers worth of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institutes Underwater Data ETA infrastructure. The researchers are looking at how to measure seismic activity on the cables without interfering with the received signal

"After the company came out with its fourth quarter results. The electric car maker reported earnings per share estimates that fell below Wall Street PS that fell below Wall Street tesla also nnounced it would restructure in the first quarter to cut annual costs by four hundred million dollars to discuss in New York, arc investment analysts tasha Keeney in San Francisco. We've got Bloomberg's down hall, who of course, covers hustle for us. Dan, break it down. So this earnings report was not a huge surprise Elon Musk had signaled to everybody when he announced layoffs earlier in January that they were expecting a smaller profit in the fourth quarter, then in the third quarter. And that's what they deliver today. They miss PS, but still have cash can pay off their debt and shares have kind of bounced around a little bit after hours, but are fairly flat last I checked. So tasha. I mean, the big question is sustainability at lot had despite a lot of challenges or record gear last year. What are you expecting when it comes to production and deliveries and demand this here? So I demand. I mean, we've really seen the model three come through. And really surprising as I mean, it's it's the top selling premium sit in the US for the second two quarters. We again in the US we demand coming in really strong. They're just starting deliveries and in China and Europe. So I think we could expect similarly positive a positive picture there in terms of production. You know, I think there's actually a too much focus on production and delivery figures for a company. That's that's really ramping like tesla. At our confessed where a long term investor. So we're looking to the future we're looking to tesla as an autonomous mobility as a service company. So if they miss production figures by a month or a few weeks that doesn't bother us so much because we're looking to the long term, we think that the could launch and a Thomas service, and that's that's the most important market opportunity. Well, and he'll and musk himself has focused a lot on production. I mean, he's the one who said that the model three would take tesla through production. Hell that said we know the company's not going to necessarily keep up the production levels of last year. They've laid off seven percent of the workforce trying to to restructure so down at how will that sort of redistribute workflow? It's interesting the shareholder letters said that they're now hoping to reach sort of sustained production rate of seven thousand model threes a week by the end of twenty nineteen Anita. Remember like in August of two thousand seventeen musk says, you should have no concerns that we're going to be ten thousand a week by the end of this year. So they're they're definitely kind of walking back some of their original production targets, but at the same time, I think they're really trying to manage demand. I mean, this is a company that builds to order, they don't have a lot. They try not to carry a lot of inventory and with the tax credit cutting down and these different treasures manager. They don't want to build a lot of cars and have them sitting around. So I think it's actually smart while they're trying to do. Tasha Tesla's broken ground on that factory in Shanghai. How optimistic are you about Tesla's future in China in the midst of these trade tensions? You know, we've actually seen a lot of positive activity, particularly in the auto space in China. This past year. We saw the relaxation of their fifty fifty joint venture rule basically allowing tesla to enter the market without a local partner. We think they still will have some local partners, perhaps her supply, of course. But that that rule relaxation actually seemed uniquely beneficial to tesla we've heard Musk's say that he had good talks with local officials there. He's complimented them in their science prowess, right as he's trying to roll out autonomous driving and for us. We think that's the largest market for Thomas driving. So it's really strategic for tesla. And we're excited to see what what goes on there. We haven't gotten an update on autopilot in a while, Dan. What are we hoping to here on the call today, which starts now in about fifteen minutes? There wasn't much on autopilot in the shareholder letter on the call. I would imagine that people will be asking about it. You know, when is tesla gonna I demonstrate this autonomous cross country drive it previous calls. We've had the whole autopilot team on the call. I'm not sure people are expecting that this time. But you know, there's a sense I guess that tesla has fallen behind competitor is like Waymo Zouk cruise when it comes to sort of getting getting to market with an offering that consumers will feel comfortable in. And we clearly Clint clearly tasha the model three and tesla is is far ahead in terms of electric cars were, but you do have competitors coming to market sales for those will likely be small this first year, but we'll grow next year. How much does tesla have to worry about the competition? Whether it's Audi whether it's Porsche. Sure, we'll we'll I I'd say on on an auto pilot pilot front. I actually think on Tesla's navigate on autopilot feature shows that it actually is sort of competing with with companies like Waymo. I mean, they're coming from a different approach testing on suburban roads as opposed to Waymo testing on suburban roses. Tesla was started mostly on highways, but that feature in terms of getting on and off the highway. It's actually a not many economists teams have had trouble with I think on the battery front we've heard that Tesla's going to count for about fifty percent of global battery production by the end of this year. So when we think about competition that competition house gets to scale, and that takes years already has that scale and more importantly, they have a technology advantage. So you know, we just heard the North American CEO of Toyota's say that Tesla's affecting pre-sales, and they're creating a new category vehicle technology German car. So that comes through over the air updates things that competitors. Just don't have. Now, dan. It's it's obviously been a tough year for tesla as well on Moscow's find by the seat. See they've brought on independent director directors. We don't know how independent they really are. Larry Ellison has joined the board and Illinois. Elon Musk has been fairly quiet. Is there a sense that the governance and leadership issues have stabilized? I think that two thousand eighteen was such a dramatic year between the auto pilot for Taliban SEC investigation that go private bid. I mean, tesla visited news nonstop. And I think everybody at the company and at the executive level is just like ready to sort of focus on execution and stay out of the limelight. It's if that's if that's possible. So, you know, the shareholder letter today was remarkable to me that was a bit conservative just in terms of guidance. There weren't any pie in the sky predictions. We really didn't hear anything like, oh, we're gonna unveil the model y in March. I mean, it was very much sort of like a conservative letter. And it'll be interesting to see what the tenor of the call is today probably a little bit more conservative. Well after flurry after a flurry of tweets Ilan hasn't tweeted since that Q four investor letter dropped so quiet on the tweet front for the moment. Down hall for Bloomberg. Investments? Tasha keeney. Thank you. Both. Thank you. All right. Coming up. We continue.
