A Conversation with Whitney Johnson
"Whitney. Welcome to the show andy. I am delighted to be here. I'm excited to to talk to you. Because i liked your book a lot. So you know some and we didn't write for sales audience per se but as a lot of very sales specific stuff in there. I thought at least maybe the lens. I read it so i can't wait to chat with you about it but one thing i wanted to ask sign. Hopefully you're well. Were recording this in the midst of the the lockdown sidano omit the formalities. But we are well for asking. I mean it's one of those questions that it used to be just a nice city but it's now a real question is a real question right. What's good and you're joining us from where we live in lexington virginia so my my husband is a professor at southern virginia university which is also near virginia military institute and washington and lee. So we're about three hours driving south west of washington dc. So is that out neuronal them. Yes yes that's our closest airport is about fifty miles away. Wow okay so having lived in big cities or served doing a little more not so rural but smaller city living. It's definitely rural. We completely disrupted ourselves. I mean why give you look outside of our window in the morning we can see deer and there are cows next door to us in fact when we very first moved here. Because we've lived in boston in manhattan in large cities when we first moved here. I remember waking up one morning. And i like hitting hitting but like you know pulling my honey honey. Turn off your phone. Because it was buzzing buzzing any turnover. And he's like those. Are the cows unbend an adjustment for us. I find one. I'm away from manhattan anywhere. I go but like my visit. My sister in wisconsin. And both my wife and i get woken up by the quiet. It's like it's too quiet and it's like wait. Why are we going every week. And you're accustomed to having the noise outside all the time that are. Do you know at some level that that it's too quiet attack keeps me up. I love that looking at by the quiet. So i was gonna ask you. Are you follow soccer fan. Because you wrote that you are going to produce a reality. Tv show about sauerland america and listeners. To show that. I'm a avid soccer fan. Oh i wish. I could say that i am. I got really excited. So this This is actually almost fifteen years ago. Now where i. I was a huge american idol. Fan in a huge. So you think you can dance fan. And and i was doing a lot of work in latin america was equity analyst. And so you know. I've been to mexico fifty times to spend a lot of my doing work a lot. American one of our companies that we followed on as equity analyst was televisa which time was basically abc cbs nbc and fox combined and again this is fifteen years ago and so we thought wait. We have an opportunity here to basically do you know. Soccer meets american idol and just got so excited about the stories of that could have produced on so while. I'm not a soccer fan per se. I am a cinderella story fan and i just thought that that could have been an amazing august show to have produced. I wanna watch for sure. So the regular listeners. Get accustomed going off on soccer stuff here. Tangents everything relates to soccer. Soccer explains the world. There was a book that wrote that. So about that so I think i read that book. Actually it was a good book. Yeah yeah so Pet the author on the show. So so we're talking about transformation personal transformation you. I've really enjoyed your book. Which you've just updated and re released disrupt yourself masterless change and speed up your learning curve. So what was the original impetus. Write the book you know. That's one of those questions that its you can answer many different ways on. But let me see. If i can streamline so that we're not here all day on you know as i just mentioned i was equity analyst. Were keep merrill lynch In a focusing on stocks in latin america like televisa so like america melville and this is back in two thousand three two thousand four. I read the book. The innovators dilemma by christian at harvard. Business school and i remember reading that book and it just was in many a transformative experience. If you will. Because i was looking at wireless at the time in every single quarter america. Mobile was beating my numbers like just every time and and telmex numbers weren't so that was the wireline company. In american mobile was the wireless i read. I read innovators dilemma. I said oh. That's what's going on. Is that wireless is disrupting wireline. And i was just fascinated. That there was a s- theory that could explain to me the world and help me understand what was happening And the more. I read that book it more i started. I think maybe just because of my own personal bent started thinking. Well how does this apply to me. Like i understand. It's explained products and services in companies in countries. But i also remember having this moment in just two thousand four. And i had just had this conversation with Someone in management saying you know what really liked to try something else. I'd like to do something else attorney. I'd like to go into management kind of laughed at me. Kind of snickered. Like ov- outs nice. That's never going to happen. And i remember coming back to that book and being you know what if i wanna do whatever it is. I think i'm meant to do which i had a very vague notion. I think many of us do I'm going to have to disrupt myself. I'm gonna have to leave wall street and go do something else.

"To It's been in her. Life honestly haven't changed a whole lot other than she really was my shadow the entire time. Yeah but other than. That too, but has it. has this affected you more in the sense of like yourself like? Madam near felt this amount of stress before finally I feel like I'm able to do exactly what I want or or is it more like? I don't feel anything just whatever now. It not. You know you can get yourself worked up and you can get stressed out or you can get excited and yes all those emissions are good things. But maintaining control of them in kind of taking it at a task. Kinda helps for me because you don't over think it. Because once you start thinking things you kind of lose sight of really what's important. Like. I said look at paint colors all day long. But I went to. Sherwin Williams at lunch day picked out three colors. I, decided from them I said. All right. This is what we're GONNA do. And I had my friend look at it and he's like. Okay. And aside it looks I've had compliments on my pink colors pretty much. Every person that's walked in and. I didn't think about it too much. So I was like, yeah, I like color color going to work with make it work. So. It's exactly what I want. But. I cannot though manage if it wasn't. Yeah. I like that. Because sometimes I feel like. We get the people who are like Oh my God. This has to be my dream I'm going to be here for the rest of my life right and so everything has to be exactly the way it is. At the GECKO. But at the same time, it's like Ten years ago I mean. I I wore a pink shirt I don't know. What I mean like these change, I may not like it anymore so. That's why I like your viewpoint. You know what I mean where it's like hey, right now it's I. Don't hate it I don't really love it. It could change a my love. Later on. So I bought. Like for example, I had bought lake the chairs and the couch, the waiting room and I left one day and the brand new girls for like. better like this than we should do this method. Alright not fine. To me as long as happy, that's that's. Honestly, more important things that are going to change and if I had the same couch near thirty years from now, that's going to be a problem. Throw couch doesn't have to be perfect and it can change as long as the staff is happy and that's what they want that. Works for me. An expert on the military strategist and statesman hates men. George marshall came over sway to ask him but something that's come up again and again in the presidential primary debates. Everyone's talking about the marshall plan julia alien castro. One of the things i proposed in my plan is essentially a twenty-first-century marshall plan for central america kissed gillibrand. He's calling for a marshall plan for racial equality and here's hillary clinton a few years back calling for one in appalachia. We have to have like the equivalent of a marshall plan. Bush called for juan obama. You get it and this isn't new. Actually there've been calls for more marshall plans since the original marshall plan which by the way began in nineteen forty eight that year someone called for a marshall plan for stray dogs and cats but no one is being really specific about what a marshall should plan actually means. I would think that it would be very useful for Connie honestly to sit down maybe with a lovely MS west with Kim Kardashian, and they could watch the great Daniel day Lewis movie Lincoln because that's all about how ABRAHAM LINCOLN was the driving force behind getting the thirteenth amendment passed. It was his last great achievement before his assassination. And I don't know what he's saying. It is absolutely true. It was illegal in southern states to try to teach black people to read. But by the way, that didn't stop people like stonewall Jackson Thomas Johnson Jackson from teaching at a school for black children slave children in Lexington Virginia. Where he he was a professor of physics at Virginia Military institute. Anyway, the the point about all of this is that some of the great intellectuals of the civil war period. Like Frederick Douglass were emphatically black. He's born a slave. And he could not only read he could write powerfully and many others could as well. He talks a little bit about some of his own challenges. Here's Kanye west. Again, speaking right in front of the resolute desk there in the Oval Office to the White House with President Trump. "Not being able to get flowers made for their wedding and consistent with the cake shop case the court sent it away they sent it back they said take it back to your local courts and ask them to rule consistent with our ruling this term and cake shop but i say to you that we will be back on cases like cake shop because they didn't issue a big constitutional ruling in that case they just issued a procedural throw you a curveball here you always do that we didn't this would be one of the topics but in the news as you may have seen this weekend was that restaurant in lexington virginia where they asked sarah huckabee sanders to leave because the owner of the restaurant pulled the staff and she and they felt that you know sarah huckabee sanders does things in her present job that so violate their sense of what's moral that they didn't want to serve her and one of the things i thought was well what's the legal comparison there to this cake shop where the the baker felt that gay marriage violated his moral principle it's a great question brian do you want my personal opinion in my legal analysis well here's the legal analysis in order to make a constitutional claim about denial of service you have to be the member of a suspect class and the greatest suspect class in our country is race other suspect classes include a gender now the court is considering sexual orientation that's what cake shop would be about and of course the gay marriage case was all about that working for the trump administration or any political entity is not and has never been recognized as a suspect class should you beat died service because you work for a particular administration will that then becomes a political oh that's separate but i just don't think sarah huckabee sanders is taken that case all the way to the us supreme court jamie floyd thank you so much other stories we are watching a coalition of civil rights religious and union activists opposed to the president's immigration policies gearing up for a protest in nevada outside of a school safety conference where us attorney general jeff sessions keynote speaker several of the protesters gathering for the rally outside of a hotel casino say they will engage in civil disobedience new jersey senator corey booker says he's seen migrants at the southern border being turned away booker is in texas he spent last night crossing the border from mexico into the us to observe the process and he says officers at the border are actively pushing people away without allowing them to present themselves for asylum the customs and border patrol officers are readily admitted to me that that's what they do they claimed it was based upon whether there was room in detention facilities for those families senator booker spoke to npr this morning he says some advocates claim border patrol officers are turning people away to encourage illegal crossings thereby justifying treating migrants as criminals new york state's federal primary elections are tomorrow where voters will choose which house and senate candidates will appear on november ballots in new york's eleventh district which includes staten island and a slim part of brooklyn the incumbent republican representative dan donovan is being challenged by his predecessor michael grimm and wnyc's john o'connor says unlike many other districts in the state that race has been all about which candidate is most like president trump donovan got endorsement from the president but grim argues he'll be the better ally in the house he points out the donovan voted against several bills the president supported including the tax cut the obamacare repeal and a bill penalising socalled sanctuary cities for immigrants donovan says he's voting in the interest of his constituents and for more details on tomorrow's elections we have our voters guide at wnyc dot org governor cuomo says he doubts republicans in the state senate will renew a law enabling almost one hundred fifty speed cameras in the city school zones to keep working the legislature ended its session without extending the law for speed cameras democrats want it but didn't have enough republican votes cuomo didn't say what he would do to help buddies warning republicans that they'll pay at the ballot box if they don't act soon i think it would be a terrible disservice and i think the voters will let them know november if they don't do mayor de blasio and transit advocates held rally yesterday to call for an extension and an expansion of the speed camera program saying the senate should act before the.

"Owner of red hen in lexington virginia to leave because i propose and i left her action say far more about her than about me free person interject a funny thing this was written up in the in the kind of an interesting publication called the heavy the staff because it was a gay issue that they were bitching about end it was over the trump's refusal at transgenders in the army so it had nothing to do with the kids in cages no and on this misremembered but i think the woman who owned the the restaurant us she's the one who introduced that topic so it wasn't really misreported just was under reported but i was reading this about the complaining about transgenders not being on the server in the military and i'm thinking when did the democrats in the ever you know be so pro military and they all want to serve and go to war no no no stop stop stop this is where you're making a thinking mistake the gays do not like the trans they don't like the not say in gays in the military don't ask don't tell all that no trans they hate trans people in general there's a huge drew rift between gay men and trans m f for fm doesn't matter which way they're going so of course they're gonna say that he's actually it's actually quite rude and aggressive i find the whole thing to be off center but let's finish this clip i'm the owner of red hen in lexington virginia to leave because i propose and i play left her action say far more about her than about me i want a nation to treat every person with dignity and compassion and fairness her father mike huckabee coming to defense tweeting bigotry on the menu at red hen restaurant in lexington virginia for you could ask for the hate plate and appetizers are small plates for small mind the former governor posting this tweet saying nancy pelosi introduces her campaign committee for the take back of the house sanders is not the first number of the administration to face public outrage homeland security secretary kirstin nelson heckled last week at a mexican restaurant executable tonight inside the white house sources telling abc news officials are suffering from whiplash blaming white house aides stephen miller pushing zero tolerance policy site or the feeling of families being separated and now are left scrambling to implement the executive order stopping the separation of family and tara now joins us from the white house and tara sources are telling you members of congress may have new legislation to fix an issue with the president's executive order wit senior white house and hill officials tell me that if a larger immigration bill fails to pass the congress next week they're preparing a more narrow bill that would allow children to stay with their parents and detention centers for more than twenty days a vote on that bill could come as early as tuesday night jeez this so stupid this whole thing and view a write about the i was thinking that the next outrage would be migrant children drugged without consent in besides the fact that news media can't discuss pharmaceuticals in that manner this also really started in two thousand ten obama's years and this lawsuits that deals specifically with twenty ten and forcibly injecting children with psychotropic drugs yeah so yeah so we're not going to tell you about that not trump we're not going to bring that up and kirsten nielsen was all her they went the protests went to her house and we're in front of her house playing the the sound of the crying children and chanting and all of this of course is is encouraged by members of congress put up a list here of democratic colleagues of yours who've called for the resignation of kristen nielsen the secretary of homeland security in light of what we've seen happen over the last few days are you going to add your name to those ranks do you think she should step aside absolutely she should step aside i have no sympathy but these people that are in this administration who you know no it's wrong what they're doing on so many fronts but they tend to not want to confront this president even leave but they know what they're doing is wrong and i wanna tell you but these members of his cabinet who remain and try to defend him him they're not gonna be able.
