"You are out here as well. How does it feel being back at the racetrack? It's been good and bad in terms of good to be back in the paddock, great to see people, my first race back this year primarily because the paddock side opening up a little bit. So, can I go and speak to people and see people don't have to do everything via Zoom? So actually it's been good to do that, but Saudi Arabia is a bit of a let me say experience in terms of logistics and travel and driving around and getting to them from the track. So actually, the F one paddock is the oasis of Karl amid a little bit of madness. Well, we are very glad that you are back track side with us and yeah, the paddocks actually come together nicely. I have to say, but let's get straight into the on track action because as I said, we finally got to see F one cars and track our day that lots of people have been waiting to see the cars tackle this circuit because it is so high speed. The speed that they were reaching today at points I was just mouth hanging open just like shock. What were your fast impressions of the track and seeing the cars out there today? So I went around the track last night in a little minibus so I did quite slow down. We overtook Sergio Pérez and Max Verstappen, so not many people can claim to have done that around Saudi, so probably the first people to have overtaken them here. Reminds me a bit of Macau circuit. Just in terms of the narrowness and the high speed sections. So at high speed bits of Macau, there's a bit flatter. And also a little bit of Valencia, where they used to have some of the lengths with Mickey Mouse, but some of it was pretty quick and spectacular. So it's kind of a mixture of those two really, but really, really high speed. I thought today could be a bit of a shunt fest in terms of incidents and drivers pushing pushing it. It just seemed to be so narrow and yesterday was so dirty. But I think what turned today to be almost instant free, barring Charles Leclerc accident at the end was the fact that managed to clean the tracks are now completely overnight so most of the sand and dirt and rubbish had been got rid of and the surface actually had quite high grip. So rather than what we've seen at tracks like Portugal and Austin the first year and turkey were super low grip on this speed of track would have been worse so difficult actually having the drives are reveling in kind of the high, high levels of grip. So that's why we saw the day actually turn out to be quite straightforward. Yeah, I was expecting to see a more instance today as well. Obviously glad that we didn't. But I was expecting it because I also went around yesterday on a track tour, probably around the same time as you. And I was shocked going around, you know, the narrowness of the circuit as well apart so many blind spots as well when going into the corners. What corners have stood out to you so far of this track? What bits are you going to be really keeping an eye on over the weekend? Oh, it's 27 corner numbers to remember so I didn't quite put them all into my head so after describe them, but the ones that have stood out for me and I still don't know the numbers are the kind of banked hairpin to think it's turned 13. So it was quite spectacular driving around it. It seems to be some different lines there. And maybe fast enough to allow a bit of side by side action or something if someone gets their nose down down inside. So that looks quite good. But I think one of the critical corners appears to be, and I don't know what number it was was the one that Max Verstappen just kept smashing across sparks line from the car and straight line in the curbs may have been early in the lap as not particularly short and need to correlate a map with what the corner number was. But there's one corner that drivers seem to I think that you can probably find a tenth if you straight line the curb, but it is going to smash the titanium plate in the plank underneath and properly you'd risk a risk of damage to front wings and stuff. So whether it's something you can do qualifying the not for the race, but that seems quite critical. I think the other really crucial sector which I think will be really important tomorrow is that final rundown to the last corner sequence of blind flat out high speed corners of DRS open and I think with traffic on a backup at the final corner, these blind corners will lose Hamilton's potentially a bit of a danger zone. That could become a big talking point tomorrow. It could indeed. Now let's talk about the action that we saw today. So Lewis Hamilton leading both sessions. I feel we have to apply extra caution to today's timings because, of course, first time out at this track, you know, everyone getting to grips with it. But coming into the weekend, many were saying that it is a Mercedes track now that you've actually seen the cars out there. Do you think that that is still the case? Or do you think it might actually end up being a little bit closer than some people were anticipating? I think today was definitely closer than a lot of people were expecting in terms of Mercedes straight line speed advantage has been quite big at times this year. They seem to have found something since turkey time just in terms of reducing drag for the system where they kind of lower the rear suspension to angle off the profile of the rear wing. We know Lewis has got the Brazilian back in the car for this weekend. May not have been in the car today, I didn't actually check with the team on that. So that maybe somebody comes tomorrow. But today they didn't look a step at max was well up there, seemed very comfortable with the car. Rebel running the medium and low down force, wings today, obviously back to back and see which was best and I think good for them was there were no flapping of the upper DRS element. So it seems they may have got to the bottom of what that problem was. But max was definitely closer to Mercedes than I was expecting. However, Lewis spoke tonight and said, actually, he felt the underperformed on single lap pace. They just weren't unlocking. The best in the kind of a single app is much more comfortable on the long runs. So I think the picture may picture may change. I think what the drivers are having to do is try and work out how best to get these tires prepared. For the lapse, obviously the long straights mean the tires cool down a bit. So it's actually quite hard to kind of generate the heat you need for grip. And if you're backing off in the final sector, try and find a gap for traffic, the tire's going to even colder. Says talk, it could take two or three laps of going quite slowly just to build up enough heat in these tires to get them ready for quick qualifying lap. We saw an F two had qualified today and they took two laps to get the tyres up to temperature. So I think that it could be an interesting day tomorrow and if things are close between Mercedes and Red Bull, it could come down to who's got their tyres into the right window, irrespective of top line speed and actual outer car performance. Okay, I was actually not expecting it to be as close as well, but like you said, Louis saying that the car isn't quite where they want it just yet. But what were your thoughts on Pierre gasly because he was up there in both sessions today, P four in FB one?.

"Weber fernando alonzo at the nurburgring and john we there we many memories of that race. I don't nothing stands out in particular from that race. Was i said to kevin before we started today. That lewis hamilton is a career. Where an off. Just an awful lot of brilliant wins the become the norm because they're not go against the grain. He's we know he's a super strong driver. Can qualify the front and perform some pretty lapse in brilliant overtaking moves and brilliant strategy and comes through him wins so sometimes they kind of old merge into each other and i think this is a classic is always came from the back or pulled off an amazing top. Ten overtaken. History was just a classic lewis. Hamilton win that can sometimes get overlooked a little bit. Which is my memory is completely blank owner. it's funny. She say that john because the in the ultimate driver ratings the the line was vintage hamilton. You're absolutely spots on. Yeah the reason. I picked. That one was because he had he had wheel-to-wheel fought through the lonzo and weber. They really were. The three of them had had a pretty much almost race long fight and there had several key we'll moments particularly when one of them was coming out the pits and one of these multiple peretti pitstop erases and in each of those sort of contested. Louis came out and he he he did. He did the moves and he passed lonzo after owns. Oh stop which is we now. He's not an easy thing to do so it was. It was getting the getting the better of to to strong rivals when it was it. Could i think it could probably have gone to any one of the three of them and eat. Well let's move to number seven. Which is one of one of the surprisingly few cave. I must say for hamilton's early career that's in. This list is the caribbean from one. That is. It's a two thousand eight german grand prix at hockenheim which is how much it's twenty-seventh formula one races. Eight victory starting from pole position. And i mean wha- was particularly was illegal different in terms of thinking about to hamilton's early career in terms of how he won these races. I guess this one mainly memorable because it was nelson be junior an not a rival regularly. guy gansler simonson and his former on career. I think i think it stood up. This this is a lewis. Has a brilliant habit of doing is that you can have races where he appears to be in control. Everything's going smoothly. And then an instant will turn on his head. Which in this race was my crash in. The safety car and wiping is lead and then pk peak getting front. But lewis never gets flustered. never kinda throws it away and they circumstance even when he say massively wiped away from him or some it goes against him to keep calm and focused and keeps delivering. And i was absolutely critical here. seeing lead wiped away being on the back foot and having to come through again and a nailing it so another classic lewis win. Yeah even when he's having a run on the radio we've seen it more in the mercedes days of course when he's ranting on the radio all these finished fastest lap you know that sort of thing Yeah he. He has a ramp as john says he doesn't. He still delivers on track. And this is an early instance of the team inadvertently sort of scream really left. Imagine safety car period thinkin. He'd be able to build up enough lead and they got really wrong and dropped him back into the pack and it looked like a race that mclaren had lost but the over to need to overtake philippi mass. Earn a nelson piquet junior. And kinda save. Mclaren's yes say. Some red faces really. If you don't do that would have been a win. They'd have they'd have really thrown away just to protect your point. Alex on on some of the perhaps the early races in his career not being their first of all was trying to get a bit of a spread across different types of race in different areas. But also the ones that come to mind. I've seen on other people's top ten wins lists are food. Gt thousand seven monaco. Two thousand and eight. We both wet weather races. I think one the reasons. I didn't put those in this. Because i think there's a better way where the race that we'll get to later but also food g. ferrari messed up with their ties and penalties and drop to the back. Lonzo crashed the main. Oh and and of course. There's the veteran weber behind the safety car. So he's rivals. Essentially tim sales out on a monarchy in two thousand eight. He biff the wall and okay was fantastic fast. After that he needed a little bit a lot with the weather in the way the strachey panda off that for him to get a win. Back the heat to throw away by putting into the barrier. So if you're doing a top fifteen or twenty. Maybe most dramatic hamilton wins. Then it would be there. But i don't think in terms of pure driving it was it was. It was his best data evans. Dude driver ratings that race. Letty ones in twenty. One definitely wouldn't have a maximum. Wouldn't you can't hit a wall and an end up even if you win to get the maximum score but then we got. Let's move on to number six. Which is really interesting race. Actually is the two thousand nine monaco grand prix sandwich since two hundred thirty fifth racy seventy-seventh winston position. But two things. Really stand out from this. An show your expand on the quite an emotional emotionally charged. We can for formula one infamous as in particular following the death of the he louder but who said the battle of hamilton has with mattress napa. And maybe have you about this. So of shadows wants to come in. Sounds of their rivalry because rebel hadn't been the big problem for mercedes during the recent years of that turbie. It'd been veteran. Ferrari or three teams are in the mix. Twenty nine thousand. But he's so it's not an hounding. Hamilton was on those on the wrong tyres essentially on the on the medium sized to keep it going. And yeah what what's your..

"One hundred wins. I mean he was already at this point. He's the typically the greatest driver of time because he's not shoemaker in terms of window to surpass macs demean seven more times so he's he's the greatest statistically now he's got one hundred he's potentially going to go on to win more championships away resist. Now in the debate of who's the greatest driver against one hundred makes any real difference in that sense. We you know. Hamilton is now. We're close enough to the end of his career. I mean i'm intrigued to john jonah. He could go and build the the next two years. I mean if he were to do that and wish to genuinely be. I ought to fight off the whole generation of leclerc which tappin russell. I mean that would really would be remark on. Surely age will catch up with him eventually. Don't think we really you wouldn't say oh now. He's definitely the greatest now he's got to one hundred. I don't think it's yeah. It's all about context all the things we've been talking about. Yeah that was that period at mclaren where yeah. He was beaten by button. Did lose township to ross burger these. These factual ways be there. I think we've talked about talked about before. What could he possibly do on track to somehow. Increase the position. Ease ordine which let's face it. He's in in the top. Three great steph draws of all time. What could eat to lift up. The only thing i can really think equipments as and went to ferrari went going to win a chance. You know lawns. I didn't do it. Veteran didn't do it. And i'm processed in des back in the day. If he went there went wrong. Win chance you with ferrari. Then i mean that really would be remarkable but he. He would be crazy to do that at this point in his career. And that's i think that's very likely so. He's he's in. He's in the debate of the boils down to what your criteria looking we could do until i pulled cast on who the greatest race driving. Well yes but. I don't think the you don't think the the that into one hundred and eight. Th world title seven eight nine makes a huge amount of difference is more about the the context that those successes scored in reading it as it is and while i'm going to remain sitting on the fence air in terms of giving an opinion on his grace woman who drove d think another interesting element is half drivers changed were they have they done in terms of that. He's not even look at jackie stewart and all the safety that he promoted and he achieve wonderful. Extra element is the identity debate on lewis aside. He's driving this force for change in multiple to improve things that people have been underrepresented him. And i think that's a a big consideration when you think about the greatest defined terms how defined as a chat for another cost. Let's go onto your top ten listed on again. Vive you spent many an evening considering lewis hamilton's Well let's face. It was nine thousand nine up until up until saatchi which isn't which isn't in that turning twenty twenty one rushing groundbreaking to give out the Beginning right to the first one at number ten which the twenty thirteen hungarian grand prix. And that's how much is one hundred and twentieth formula. One races twenty-second victory base. First mercedes and john. I'm gonna come to you. Have you any particular memories of that day. The hungarian i imagine it was quite hot at the hungarian in july. The body memory of that time was more the political background to all nine lead that it was lewis his first win but it was the year of the famous mercedes secret test. In barcelona's this has been a real ongoing political battle. Between this was the point mercedes have become a serious threat to the teams so that run this test after spanish grand prix with nick owen. Lewis is a test. Ripe food peretti's tara test and so they've run this test after grand prix drivers in black helmets so although they claim there there was no reasons. Keepdriving secret so big political thing they got were cleared of a major rules breach. There was an f. i. Hearing and they agree to not run a young driver test but the belief was that this tested had allowed mercedes to better understand the huge tide degradation problems that had because it had races where the car was quick but couldn't tires and was mashing the tires hungary was nicer pricey lewis on pole position as such but you. It was no way in the heat of hungary. That car is going. Be able to look after its tires and manage it and this was the day it turned is the day he he did it. He nailed it key. Was that that move on. Jenson button after pitstops which got in through so that was the the arrival there was not only the lewis win for mercedes but confirmation about this kind of the background that secret tests and he just sense that the momentum is covering this team was becoming a major force and wise that made the list once the in at number ten john zarrella very well. They looked after the ties when even he didn't expect her thing after giving his comments to qualifying he now the that the overtakes on on panama web when he needed to and also like to look at what. What their teammate seducing when. I'm doing these races. And eka rosberg was battling for ninth. When he's engine let go and his best and that was almost harvesting slow than hamilton so especially given the context actually there had some great races. Were quite close. In subsequent years dasa thrashing really so just an error-free looked off the tires over to when you had to thrash teammate. And of course it was a supposedly of autistic license because it is a bit of a milestone. you know he's i he's first mercedes win. Let's come and number nine. Which of the two thousand twelve. Us grand prix at austin. That's someone one hundred ninety. Three one racist twenty-first victory john. You can take your memories of being there. I was thinking. This is the race where ferrari triggered the great penalty from moscow lonzo onto the clean side of the greater. The austin. Now this was this was get first austin's first year so great mega venue and everyone was raising the venue and austin's an amazing city so at forms automatically love with the new home of the american grand prix but the track as we saw in turkey last year. The new track had absolutely zero grip was driving on ice. Put the onus on starting on the clean side of the grid say much say that when fernando alonzo locked in the title at that time and was managed to qualify behind fleet paymaster but on the dirty side of the grid ferrari basically made mass official lemon deliberately open his gearbox penalty to move onto the clean side so a remarkable remarkable moment really indeed in worth thinking about in the context of the rumors that mercedes that done similar. Things voucher brought us. They said they didn't change. Chat change engine because the one that put in it was a big problem with it but kevin is the two thousand twelve. Us go pre illness number nine so sums up one of those rivalries. We talk about the one. We've vetted where normally had the advantage. Because john kerry had an agent new he read and it one of those. Those races opportunistic really. He chased you know once he got up to second and got up behind veteran. There was quite a long period homers behind him. He's not. There's not really a chance. Discovery gordon covered. Yeah he was hanging on in a car that was as quick as the red bull. Not not sure. It was at times during that season. Certainly and then of course veteran just caught nourian kinds. hr not were those. They very slow through. That twisty turned three to seven section. And she's great bear trap but you can't take it just brought hamilton into range and he grabbed the lead so he had one opportunity to win that race and he took it and i think it was a it was one of his sniper winds mclaren poorly produced those amazing stetson hats through the podium podium finishes to wear and we're gonna come onto the number eight now which is the two thousand eleven german grand prix at the nurburgring. That's how much is eight hundred. I i'm going to one race is sixteenth win and kill him is gonna read a line from your your copy here because one of my favorite words in it so this was another swashbuckling races performance. The help time with them. Pete.

"And formula one itself of course being so liberty media. So just how much is hamilton's career encapsulated over that change. The biggest influence of all was the threat of the kind of photo breakaway late. Two thousand ten period when teams are trying to get power and rest rested from eccleston. And there's a chance of them. Winning say echo stein picks them off by offering the big teams extra cash basically so picked them out. So you handed all these constructors Bonuses to ferrari to red bull and mercedes managed to grab it as well which then basically triggered a two-tier formed one because the the best teams at far more money than anybody else split the grid so you had three teams at the front and everyone else. Not only behind bert well behind. I think. I think i'm correcting twenty seventeen in two thousand eighteen only to non mercedes red bull ferrari cars on the podium which was the force indias impact one year land. Stroller ammonia sergio perez. So this was the low point in f ones competitiveness. This thing that liberty media announced trying to roll back so the cost cap coming in to stop the big spenders spending their way to success Better revenue distribution system so The small teams more money. We've got this many era handicap system to have the back teams a little bit. Hope you're 'cause it can race better and we are seeing the grid coming together now. So i think during that era if you weren't in one of those top three teams. You weren't going to get much success. And luckily for lewis. He joined the top three teams and a joined. The team that completely nailed the twenty fourteen engine which was enough to keep them ahead for the first era but at a time when tighter wolf's probably bringing in a new management philosophy into formula one and it pushed hard on the area front and then the team while the engine vantage also built up his knowledge and became very strong on that front as well and it was it was a double combination. Rebel couldn't match all times because they were lacking on the engine front. Despite having renewal board kept going back to silverstein in july. Because we've been planning this podcast ever since then it's been all right. Let's get ready to go because we never know when he's going to hit one hundred wins. Then we've got this. Have this planned dame. We've got to change the magazine hundred page special and he said earlier this week. Connor surprised that it took louis so long. Because it's kind of weird. He's in a very close championship fiber. There's been some. There's been more. One randomness injected along the way to the point where one of the german publications build kept asking how he thought. One hundred win was cursed which is of course. This is ridiculous but he's just interesting to think you know you on the verge that milestone needs. It's it's is taste. this is not coming. Yeah i think if you asked that. The loss g. o. Even the start of this year you as the boys taken as was it taken until september to get it. But i think by silverstone we knew. Didn't we yeah. We we know that the red ball more from the not has a slight pace advantage and hamilton's it be up against maximum poor goodenow operators that. They're they did make that. They had a bad pitstop at monza but normally they are pretty on it. So all things being equal it was gonna take a while. I think what's been breeding about this seasons. We have had a couple of the random winners as well. Which is what you what you would want to good. Champion for. A couple of random winners like autonomic. That's that's fantastic. So now i'm not surprised dopson. It took this long. We weren't quite ready hungry so quite pleased that lonzo actually managed to hold up held sharp enough rock onto because we were that would have made the sunday night. Monday really caught hardware but are by baya by monzer and then see russia. We were a bit more on top of it so yeah no. There's a little bit of a delay is good days office of his back now as well just got back. What you're saying about the different era is also worth mentioning. That lewis has been able to adapt to those different different regulations very well. The top drives away of course. But you know you you mentioned earlier. The bridgestone's or sprint format gone through the different engine. Changing relations all the energy management can after the ties. Which i i think. It's one of the underrated parts of his game. He's had yeah. Now we got sprint qualifying. There's lots of different things. Eight had to adapt to. And he's yeah he just doesn't doesn't seem to be anything really that that catches him out. You can now say that he's become a driver of change with mercedes. Be running black cars. If it wasn't lewis hamilton. I would suggest not so. I think he's now blend with the hamilton commission. He is now in his last year or two. I think he's becoming a driver of change within formula one and then he's east breaking our surprised he was surprised and touched really happy day. Them mercedes we're going to do that. There is some suggestion that they might go back to two silver for two thousand twenty two. Which again. I think he's world visit was what's more important things. We started the ball rolling We committed as a team to to improve when it comes to diversity and changing things you might just as well. John lewis got a new two year contracts coming up with mercedes as we go into the new era in twenty twenty. He's going up against the Highly rated teammate. And george russell raising the specter of could we get another rivalry locked behind With mercedes but then if you know if the rebel continues to be a threat if other teams come back into the mix could be even more exciting than not but how many possibly might lewis go on to get his foreigner winds to win formula. One of the critical point will be whose whose got these twenty one regulations right i think the general consensus in the paddock is for all the all. The liberty media's aims of the cost cap and equal revenue. Sharon closer racing. 'cause will work in the long term. It should bring us a a great this as is right now. Which is why we're changing rules. But i think in the short-term one team is going absolutely nail it and dominate in the first phase of two thousand twenty two. So i think if if mercedes get it right then he could easily a louis in six seven. Eight wins each year so And you could probably. I could see him doing another contract beyond these two. I don't think he'll do these two. And then disappear if if there's if there's a decent amount of success and he feels he's still got it and is invigorated by what russell brings to the team and this this challenge of new drivers coming through then i think he could add twenty thirty more wins title before before the end but i think if if said he got it wrong next year and struggling poor season then he could easily see that tally not getting added very much and then louis decides after two years. Actually i'm an interest in winning a million the success and then he disappears off solving. It'll be an awful lot more or not very many all. There won't be anything in the middle and this the other extra element of willie carry on. His next contract is the he. I'm sure he knows. And most athletes do. They're worth far more in terms of what they can say the messages that they want to promote by being active and successful in in the sports there. And you think about what smashing vets with msg conveyed in hungary with the the lgbt rainbows. T. shirt you think pink blitzer you know. He knows he's going to get more coverage because he's still formula on driver. It's the same with lewis hamilton and promoting diversities. It's that it's that much more important to be a formidable andro. The former formula one driver seen. That's always a factor in there and they can come into you become to go into your room. You're ranked one of your wonderful lists of is top ten forty one wins and becoming too you just about because we've had this debate. We've we've produced the host special magazine celebrating sports seventy years about considering the greatest. What is the greatest meaning motor sport but now lewis hamilton as chief..

"That's when veteran takes head as you mentioned cartoons and boston was a real rival in terms of mclaren because he outscored hamilton vessel working out the titles then again becomes another direct rival in two thousand seventeen eighteen when ferrari nico rosberg of course the interesting battle mercedes and now. This incredible most for the ages fight with max stopping. So i'm going to ask you both to pick one. Unfortunately am john too. I who might you. Consider to be louis hamptons. Greatest formula one rival. The difficulty with that is that they're all all those drivers posed headaches to louis for very different reasons. None of them necessarily because of pure out out. Talent alonzo is the first year in formula one very very political rival So thrust into this massive political battle against a supremely naturally talented driver which was could august properly. I was was probably the most difficult one. I think we've rosberg. The difficulty was that I think lewis felt that he was naturally quicker. The but nikko could deliver the results when it was needed. Our nikkei was playing games inside the team. Lewis found very difficult to deal with concede. Just wanted to be things to be equal and this kid nine we've and race alongside each karting and a come through the ranks. Suddenly there was his bitterness in business and politics going on inside a team joining he found difficult to cope with and then he got vital had the benefit of an agent. New red bull. So you battling against a machine vetted with ferrari engine as well in that era I think i had to pick one probably probably guy for lonzo just because of all the computations of talent plus politics plus just as amazing whirlwind of chaos around spike a in two thousand seventeen. That's the one. I'd probably pick out of all of them. Were the rest. He could cope with post him. Different different kinds of headaches and different challenges and whining. Johnson to everett. Where i think if you're picking the number of championship fawzi's veterans new. Because he fought him read and ferrari. But there's only one drive enlisted there. I think he's on hamilton's level or was on hamilton's level and that is lonzo. And i think it's a real show discusses for we were roped that that should have been the that should have been the context of the ages gene hamilton's career but lonzo see went often. Dr middling cars at best for too long. But he's the only thing we've seen hamilton's got the better vetter we saw it for. Orion ferrari had the edge on the hamiltons got got school federal tucked up really and of heat actually beat rosberg over the course of their time together but alonso is the one guy that that could could have could have should have would have been been up there with him. Obviously we haven't seen the the mattress tavern thing to its conclusion. I would say the moment. I don't think crashing into lewis every couple of weeks really makes you particularly brilliant. I four think that max's golic show that he's prepared to let louis and max loosen him get round the corner together and then we'll have a great rivalry so the moment i'd say in terms of taught fox's veteran we in terms of ability it's lonzo and did nothing is worth adding was gonna beginning. Our property would pick alonzo as well mainly because of the way lonzo still races hamilton. Even though they're not in the same fight anymore link back race in mexico orlands. I was in that awful mclaren and he really as louis extreme yard and then how often hungry in the alpine's alpbach on win. Would anyone else have done that in. The alpine are not convinced they would have done. I mean zappin probably would have given them both off the track on soil now. That sounds anti max. I'm kind of a bit sick of there not being able to raise. We'll we'll together as the the cover of the magazine. The monza mayor suggested. I want to see a clean fight between the two best jobs in the world. Not one of them ending up on top of the other one in a gravel chat. I think that's a bit rubbish. But so yeah i think alonzo's race craft. Yeah he doesn't really have any chinks in these he's armor either other than perhaps some of the off track stuff he's made the wrong career moves whereas lewis made the one career. That was alex absolute genius even even at toyota gentleman's as social outside the championship. There's there's talk of how he was just credible political operator even there in that. It was a two car. Fight you know. They had no real rivals. Anyway we again. I'm getting muttered sidetracked and we spike about how mclaren has changed after lewis howard left but we can also say that jerry lewis hamilton's career formula one has has almost fundamentally changed. You think about how like. I was winning at the time. When lewis left mclaren but me is after that mclaren and ferrari wants that the preeminent teams you think in the previous era. They've taken a massive step back in having to build back mercedes. Changes massively. Red bozo changes massive and. I think we've talked about this. I think that in the future. We're gonna come back on that reporting. That was organized very quickly taking over from john q. And went on to become one the best quoting formula one one amazing operation. They've done there but in terms of formula on the engine formula changes. The things with the climate crisis are really having to be recognized as you know in terms of the way. The automotive industry's going things have got to change. The teams have won differently. Look at how toto wolff runs. Mercedes sums of like an entrepreneur thing than a big super team. That's backed by master.

"Whoa talk so he said well that was enough. I can't i can't do that again. So of course he what goes in retirees so john. What's your impression of how lewis's kept that motivation. Hi how he's kept himself just trying to get better and better because again. When i started team last year. That was something he said. You know that. I i do feel like lamm still getting better as i get older and think about that season he said why are in twenty nine thousand ninety four or five pole positions whereas before i was getting double that so i need to improve when it comes to qualify. Did and that was a key part every time to win last year. See a house cats raising the game. Parviz this brilliant psychological makeup of believing. He's the best in the business but believing that at any point that could get taken away from him if he doesn't work as hard as he needs to. And this paranoia with falling off the cliff and that that performance not being there I thought that again schumacher net flicks firmware current talked about michael having this this winter in norway after the ninety seven championship and just shut off from formula one and then as you return for ninety eight just the doubts about not sure. If i can do this anymore. I need to check if i'm there and i think lewis almost goes through the same thing that there's this uncertainty about his performance. Has he maximized his work. Engineers has he maximizes understanding of ties. Has he maximizes. Caller font formats is race performance all is elements. nothing is that this work ethic. He's got the doesn't rely on his natural talent. He he knows he's quick but you know he's he has to work and has to find details and pushes on with marginal gains and he's kept hungry in. He's kept motivated. You've never sensed any time where. He's being tired of racing and form lonzo board racing full-on. There's been frustrations has annoyances that far had such a strong engine in twenty eighteen. He's had no noises. Difficulties nico rosberg. The the falling out. Which i think was was proud of the low. The low point for lewis atmosphere during that era When there was a big thing to the whole thing falling apart but through old he just keeps pushing. He keeps working and constantly trying to improve without complacency falling without motivation falling away. I think you could argue. Actually that two thousand sixteen season it was the conduct final thing that completed that process in that he yes we know had unreliability problems and that nico was probably being a bit political behind the scenes. Away lewis doesn't appreciate. He just likes to rock up and do his thing. He's not really a political catcher in that sense but he also gave away some points that year with poor starts a combination of nico absolutely maximizing what he had and making sure we could starts. They've unreliability lewis was enough for him to lose a chance that he out clearly. He never thought he should have lost that ship to nico rosberg. And he probably shouldn't have done. And i think the twenty seventeen spent hamilton. Since then we've seen him just be making absolutely sure. There isn't any way that he's gonna lose a chance. You la again. And i think he's been pretty awesome. Since the second half of twenty seventeen we have been periods where ferrari had a quick car and he and we'll about trump shelby. Yeah he stepped up. And he's just i think he's you're brilliant. I suspect probably the big wide faster car seat him as well. When you look back at the photos and footage pre two thousand seventeen. They do look a bit skinny and rubbish. I do think. I look call or better now. And i think the environment mercedes without nico has obviously been better for him as well. He doesn't really want an intra team fight. he wants to be. Yeah the the main guard teams around taking on for oil rape or whatever. That's the saw alikes. So i think it's a combination of all those factors and these own personal drive is remarkable. Egypt keeps keeps keeps going in improving. I rely that line came up with the thing is last year. Where even if he's paul. He imagines himself or car. Just that little bit at a reach shows away striving if you've ever played a computer game where you're racing a ghost car drive there when when you when you trying to cap site goes and he's having real yeah in his head in real life. That was caught. this shows. Yeah you could be on second. And he's still got try and get that invisible cards just fun exit or something and they also saying ways tiresome. Ridiculous point trotted out. Know it's all about in the car and was we know on. The car is very very important in a certain degree point. He doesn't work because if it's all about the call wise voucher bots winning every race and and things not at the moment but what is undeniable is in terms of kids. The tires that lewis used throughout his career is only got. The one world title came on the bridge. Stein's in two thousand eight over the rest of the parolees which don't have the grades. Reputation is still trouble going on in terms of you. Think matt tobacco in jane balance a master of management. I think we look at that race in sachi. Just gone i can. He wins the race because the rain comes i still. There's a sense that undermines did accidentally the racist pasto offer a little bit. You just got the sense. That lewis was doing what he's done so many times throughout his career mainly davao botox in recent years. Which is what. I'm going to sit here. White v to destroy your tires and go policy. Because that's what that's what. He did so successfully. Obviously it was more dramatic in the early. The early years of the twenty thirteen twenty fourteen onwards and things like that. I think that's just something about amazon's success that we should always be recognized but in terms of in terms of his rivals cave. you mentioned. Twenty up begins sebastian. Vessel lewis hamilton's list of roy was goes back with and that's when he joined for many one and.

"Be very very surprised he gets to two hundred. If i'd be very surprised if any driver gets to two hundred. So i think the first one to get the century is a is a big moment for f one. Even if we didn't quite appreciate as much as we probably could done on sunday and data a second element in terms of that one hundred race. Victory that some of the shine of things for both hamilton. A mercedes was the fact that moslem went from the back of the grid to second because saw of e you get you get the feeling that lewis won't start eighth worlds is more than anything else and they would have nine that perhaps they were. They were expecting to have a big point. So we're knowing rebel staying in the back but it didn't work out that way do you have i mean. Did you ever think hundred race wins would be achieved in formula one is. It's difficult nick. Records there to be broken. But now i don't think when marsha maxine ninety-one one that just seemed a ridiculous number itself and for lewis to get there the arm sure someone will break it in the future. You know season's getting longer careers drivers yum extra step so young. When he started it impossible that he could be the one the brakes if if his career guy who's the way he he wants to wants it to. But yeah i don't think you could. You could have predicted it. Hundreds of seems the arm bar beyond got really into one when our land prostitutes and senator battling out on their combined. Total is ninety. Two nice to be you know. Don't one eight hundred four one years so for for those come along. Get one hundred dollars. Eight case yeah. It's an incredible achievement. But now we've learned that records records can be broke concern show. Hamilton's will be vulnerable at some point. I think john's are being the first two hundred eight does it does mean something. This is a remarkable achievement in date and evenings engine to think that form with the with the upcoming ruse changed. Its the thinking behind. That is to stop one team. Absolutely dominating as mercedes have of late as ferrari today at the start of the century but the influence history there's always being team to dominate remains to being wherever that comes to pass it. Does you would expect if the wind is spread out a lot more much much harder for one particular driver t to get anywhere near hamilton's total but again if he does come to pass that another payment is an amazing cycle. That mercedes did as you say that. With the with the racist with the season length approaching twenty five. It's not going to be that many. Think when when lewis matched or broke democracy amac is record daniel regard. I must be at the nurburgring because we're always in the press conference with him. Mccarter said that is basically you think about that. Toto is basically winning every single race for five years. That's that's that's that's the that's the that's the level of domination that he's had and that's what it takes to reach that high numbers and but john just thinking about this this milestone in the context of hamilton's career. Where do you think that ranks among his other achievements. i think the number of titles will be the is the thing that makes people reflect on when we look back on careers. I think the number. I think if he can go for a nine or even more And take that record. That will be more than you know. I think nine titles would be more than one. Hundred fifty wins or something. I think that's what people look back. On and reflect on justice she mce breaking franchise record and getting seven lewis. Going eight or nine will be a much greater achievements in winning world championships. Still the number one aim is still the the most difficult thing to go through the pain that You know to she might netflix film. You know that that pain and the push to get that world jump ship for ferrari came you had to wait till two thousand and all the all the winds they got in that period counted for nothing even not remarkable. It was sean. Todd said we were questioning. If michael was the the right man. Did we need some someone that make hackman despite all the winds. So what counts his championships. So while i think it's a you know we'll be a nice thing. If lewis hamilton's is created with the most world championships the most wins. The most pole positions still thinks that the championship still ranks up. There is you know how how the how most people reflect on the success for drivers are would agree with that. But i think he's a little bit of a shame. Actually that is the case a completely correct but the point jolly of any race whether it's in the challenge is to win it and i think he's gonna the purest measure your law. Statistics in full honor been ruined. Now one way or another thing. I thought he slapped giving point is messed that up position. They're in the middle of trying to screw up with this sprint near the sprint race result gives you an official position. The point system has been chained so comparing hamilton's points to say somebody like prostate centuries. Point is as pointless. So yeah the to i think the two stats you can look at. And yes that is meaningful still all the winds in the in the world titles and are completely agree with john we'll chap she says what he will be remembered for are offering the winds in the ratio of wins starts yet. Lewis is one more than a third of his gone pres. Which if you remember. They had to put up with red bull domination for a few years. Against the best. In veto think's remarkable prostate senator about twenty five percent. Yeah most of the great drivers in the sort of mid twenty percent. And he's over thirty. So i do think that is that is meaningful..

Hey, it's Greenie already looking ahead to Monday with the very latest on the Aaron Rodgers saga, and it's the final week of the NBA regular season. We'll get you ready for the playoffs. It's me, Greenie, starting 10 A.m., eastern on ESPN Radio and ESPN plus Hey, Welcome in. What is the final edition of the first draft podcast for this season? And before I say loaded, Mel and Todd, I'm gonna give them like five extra seconds to catch up on some sleep and say Thank you, everybody who spend time listening to us. Over the last handful of months, plus the people that I'll make this podcast possible. Mike Boss Matt offer David Presley helped bring this podcast to life through video, Daniel dot our intrepid producer and all those involved with the audio product. It was a banner year for us, and it was a banner year again for Mel Kiper Jr and Todd McShay. Mel, How are you doing after the draft? Have you slept more than like six or seven hours per night? Since then, a little less like that survival? This is kind of our bear Grylls moment. Throw us out there and We could come back and still stand today after a couple days after the draft, and we're still standing. We're so excited. Hot. Scott is mock draft for next year coming out Thursday. I've already got some guys raided that I got a big board coming out in two weeks for next year's dress up this one of being a rearview mirror will move on to next year pretty soon, But today we'll kind of review everything and come up with some Some ideas about who we think did well, some surprising, puzzling moves and wrap up the dress. I'll tell you what, guys. A lot of good players went on draft and they've already signed with respective teams there. You kind of your 8th and 9th round picks, and some of those guys could be in camp and and helping things this year. The national football it hanging in good. I told type of the story yesterday. So my parents both worked for Delta. Right Growing up. I've been flying on planes since I was like 89 months old. I've never been able to sleep on a plane ever. I so we I'm flying from Cleveland to Boston, and I got a tap on the shoulder. It's a flight attendant, and he says it's time to go. You got to grab your bag and go. Ah $100 seats heated and one that was my safe. One veterinarian 150. People had passed by that I slept through the whole thing and I look around and there were people with You know the cleaning through the trash bags cleaning everything up on the roof. This is embarrassing. Isn't it? Lucky that no one had somewhere else to take you out to take it. Oh, yeah. Good One wound up in Germany. That is amazing. Well, it's certainly well earned, and the content has not stopped. The draft is over. I know Mel astonish draft great artist on his biggest question, Mark, You mentioned that ties doing his 2022 mock draft, which comes out on Thursday mail. You're working on your big Board. The draft really is a 365 days a year event, but we don't want to let this draft that just went behind us passed by without taking at least one more bite of the Apple to review some of the picks that were made some of the strategies involved by teams and maybe those that we felt like fair, stronger than others. So we're going to start in reviewing this draft by starting with teams that we thought How to stand out draft knocked out of the park. So, Mel, I'll give you the first pick. It was a team that knock knock this draft out of the park. A two ways the Miami Dolphins are so it had a great trance. I don't do they get players to help on both sides of all. We got 2023 1st round pick from the 40 Niners, but Jalen Waddle Jalen Phillips should be impact performers of pass rusher and Phillips and a receiver. Return Man. Put returner and Waddle Jamaan, Holland Liam like the bird hunter long that second tight end Barnell Coleman at huge book an underrated attack while you mask They did really well in the Chargers, I thought lined it up. They sat. They waited for Slater to be there. He was a 13 Asante Samuel, junior cornerback from Florida State line. The more underrated players goes that 47. Then they get guys like Chris Rough. A good pass rusher in the fourth round. I like Brendan. Hi. Mrs. Potential in Nebraska know about the Senior Bowl practice. I went back. It's those the tape in the brass, Katie. He held up very well. There was the Cornhuskers Roundtree running back in the sixth around. Nice pick there. So I gave the Chargers and the Dolphins of two highest phrase in the Giants. Kind of amended that Came up the B Plus should have given him a day They moved down twice. They got a first round pick next year from Chicago. They got social or in a second to various Tony and the first added some real good players along the way. So I'd say that the Dolphins Chargers giants in that order for May. I was just saying that comes to mind for you. I was just to say quickly. Gettleman. Dave Gettleman. The GM of the Giants has never traded down before And so he kind of went against the grain and move down twice, and I thought it over. Really successful draft. I'll start with the other New York team. The Jets. I thought Joe Douglas did a tremendous job and listen. He deconstructed the roster and get got all this. This draft capital on 20 picks over to your span so that he can maneuver around. He's not going to spend all 20 text, but it's just figuring out the guys that he wants. Obviously sitting in number two They love Zack Wilson, the quarterback from BYU. He knew that he wanted to go up and get Elijah Vera Tucker, the offensive tackle in college, who's gonna kick inside the guard from jets to put.

"I'm arava bravo and today. Alex cullen orcas or two sports grand prix. Editor is here to chat about today's action. Alex what an exciting session. That was louis. Bano sounded quite surprised themselves that they had secured pole position going into qualifying today. Will you expecting him to take paul. I'll be honest. no. I don't think i was. I think the surprise you could hear in beaufort voice was absolutely genuine i. They know that they're in a real close fight with boone. There's going to be very very difficult to do with dominating. I don't like definitely think this is a qualifying. That red bull lost rather than mercedes one. So yeah lewis. Hamilton was brilliant. Excellent job but he himself will admit that neither of his two laps were particularly a hundred percent. Perfect is what he said he needed to being said. If you can him about listen in the press conference he says if you put the t. laps together you would have not perfect but i think we still felt both of them. There was time on the table. And you could see that. And secondly didn't improve. Both of the rebel drivers made significant errors. And actually if stopping hooks. Everything up. He's clearly on head of hamilton. Overtaking and crucial strategy. 'cause we retreated to batu throughout the failed impressive drives from the likes of landowners. I'm sergio perez. Meanwhile elsewhere the day didn't go quite to plan with. Dns finicky to mazar pin on fernando alonzo contact with guiseley which ultimately ruined his race. Another tough day for sebastian battle. "Of the weekend max stock has taken pole and it feels like we have a bachelor hands. What did you think of the stephens. Performance arianna was fantastic today. It really really was. I mean like. I said a few nights ago recorded our hand i've represented. I was always very pessimistic. Is very wary of the potential from his eighties to to come back out of nowhere and stunned the formula one field and maintain its advantage from the previous seasons. But yeah i mean what. What a great drive from vistaprint. The there was a slight a slight down a slight negative aspect to it. It did make a mistake in key. One damaged his car and put not seemingly not enough christie reckons that it costs about one tenth for seconds in terms of each latte did after going over the cubs and damaging his floor. "The minimum he's a very very consistent driver who regularly finished up in Podium places and does well and Mercedes very happy with them. So I understand like there are no hurry to get rid of him. But certainly George Russell George Russell is probably the most exciting. I've I've seen from Mercedes all year where Lewis Hamilton is dominant and amazing and that's actually kind of boring because he's so far ahead every time when you have a guy like George Russell winning a race you go. Oh, this is interesting. It's new, it's different. It's fun and the three drivers who led the most laps in F1 all year or Lewis Hamilton valtteri bottas, and now George Russell's and the top with them. It's kind of crazy like Mercedes dominates this Sport and I just want to see about George Russell and a good car and I felt so bad for him man. Where He's going to win then they screwed up the pit stop then he was going to Podium but they had to send it back to the pits to take off his tires. But on the Right Tires again, then he had a puncture. So he he went from first place down volume two points. He ended up getting back into the points with really good driving got 9th Place and that is George Russell's first-ever points in form of the one but I just man it's so I feel so bad for him. Also. Gotta say people all year. I've heard people say like the Mercedes car is really bad at following and they always say that when valtteri bottas is trying to get ahead of people and passed people to get back up into the lead-off. I've heard all year. The Mercedes car is not very good at following. I heard that so many times and that appears to only be true and valtteri bottas and driving cuz Lewis Hamilton at times has driven right through the pack up to the front multiple times. They've seen George Russell did it on Sunday people keep saying this thing. It's just nonsensical not quite true. Like I get they're not supposed to be the they're they're supposed to lead the Mercedes cars designed..

Saudis sporting soft-power attempt

"November twenty eighth the green lights over the greed in jeddah will go out and the first saudi arabian grand prix will into life and though twenty formula one qasr raise a mightily impressive in the start of a race. They will need to rev extra to have any hope of drowning out throughout about the propriety of this event occurring at all a row to which this very explainer is about to make a modest contribution. Let's look at the undeniable upsides. I which one take too long in and of itself. The saudi arabian grand prix will doubtless be a splendid spectacle. It is to be held on a street circuit in jeddah the precise layout remains to be confirmed but it seems certain one part of the track will conduct formula one's spelt machines down the konishi the boulevard which hugs the red sea coast. And the saudis will certainly dredge deeply from the bottomless pit of money to rent the proceedings as sumptuous extravagant as possible. It might even be of crucial importance in the context of next season. The saudi arabian grand prix will be the second lost race of the year. So if two thousand and twenty one turns out not to be yet. Another procession led by lewis hamilton. The wheel of his mercedes come at the calendar man lewis. Hamilton starts an incredible qualifying. They could still be much to play playful when the teams arrive in jeddah. So that's the good news. Then there are the reasons why this edition to the formula. One calendar is the stuff of foreign desk explainers. It is hopefully not necessary to reemphasize the variety and severity of the ways in which the saudi regime is one of the world's most repressive. We do not have all day still less all month. It is suffice to say a regime which ethically inclined businesses would tend to regard from the foreign bargepole formula one does not appear overly troubled on this front in recent years alone. Races have been held in russia as a fan bahrain and china. None of whom would be within sight of the podium at any sort of grand prix of human rights. it is probably not outrageous to suggest that formula one's principal objections to holding a race meeting in north korea. Iran equatorial guinea or turkmenistan would be logistical rather than an ethical. So we know what formula one wants from this. What's more interesting is what saudi arabia is off to. Saudi arabia has some history of recognizing the immense soft power possibilities of formula one in the late nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighty s saudi state airline saudia sponsored the uk based williams team australian driver. Alan jones carried their logo to the one thousand nine hundred world championship. Tell checkered flag often goes allen jones. what a wonderful way to pay is nineteen eighteen world championship. Riyadh's re engagement with the sport is being pitched as part of the modernizing reformist agenda of ambitious saudi crown prince mohammad bin salman though it does not feel untoward lee churlish to note that nba if to whole saudi arabia into the mid nineteenth century have made some distinctly old school d to via for example conducting a ruinous rampage in neighboring yemen and dispatching hitmen to murder a vexatious journalist the un's extrajudicial executions investigator. Agnes calamar has just released a report at pains a- damning picture of saudi arabia's role in the murder of journalists jamal has all of which is tricky to square with formula one's commitment to respect for human rights which f. one has typed out on their website and everything it promises to it says he engage in meaningful consultation with relevant stakeholders in relation to any issues raised as a result of out due diligence. A sentence which could have been designed to lull readers to sleep inside four syllables. Human rights groups are already speaking of their hope that lewis hamilton who barring mishap will be defending his seventh world championship. Next season might get out in front of this. How has grown more politically outspoken. This year in particular among the slogans on the black lives matter t shirt he wore at this year's emilia romagna grand prix was women's rights are human rights. A repeat performance would give saudi broadcasters amusing connections. Saudi arabia is clearly keen on what has become known as sports washing the tactic beloved unpleasant regimes of staging sporting circuses. In the hope that they may distract from your moral infirmities and impressed with your economic progress in recent years. Saudi arabia has hosted international gulf tennis equestrian and other tournaments formula one one of the planet's most popular television spectacles. He's a massive step up.

He's just a jerk, you know, people hate him cuz he wins but I want to point out Lewis Hamilton seems like a decent guy and it would be much worse to follow Formula One if Lewis Hamilton dominated, but he was also just an evil awful mean jerk. So I am grateful for Lewis Hamilton. I don't think he gets enough appreciation for that, you know part of him who he is and I just wanted to point that out. I don't hate Lewis Hamilton the same way a lot of other people do and he's a really really dead. 2020 F1 season: No reverse grids for double-headers

"Talked about this last week, but it's been confirmed now that reverse grids will not be happening at the double header this year because Toto Wolff is not into them. He's apparently the only dissenting voice that required unanimity and Formula One fell one short as a shame authority I thought he would be an all for that. You know he's talked about these issues in the one where? He has provided on things for the greater good. Decisions that may not necessarily be the best for for his team, so in this instance. Sort of gone against that one little bit hasn't even as given three reasons which we didn't have last week, so let's consider them three very specific reasons, reason number one that is formula a meritocracy and this would be a gimmick. Which look I understand on one level because it is very arbitrary, just reverse secret especially when there is such a big performance disparity I mean. Let's be honest. That means Williams is going to be starting on the front row with agreed every double header. And that does look a bit silly. When the wheels of Folding Company and they've decided. Yeah, but I, I think people are now beginning to unravel an inherent problem with qualifying represents. Your qualifying at the Front of the grid to get. Not even to get ahead. What is qualifying? Is it to get a head start on the foster 'cause, or is it basically an order of which you'll car is better than everyone. Else's so therefore you also get more of a headstart than everyone, but then I'm going to be able to catch you anyway, and then therefore you know. Come the groom furry. We don't have a spectacle of saying the best car. We. We literally say the best car being the car, and while that might be nice for Lewis. Hamilton NFL bought has depending on the time of day. It. The rest of the shark doesn't it doesn't really matter so everyone's having a bit of an existential cross whether pay a boiling it down so well. Is this entertainment or sport that we're after? Wouldn't it be? Form One, just adopt the model of trading itself as the ultimate speed comparison. They have it some grown pretty well. You do all this relations on practice actually with wile, maybe Rendu like a sprint rice ingred order not in reverse order, and then just figure out how long how much quicker the Mercedes than the red bull, how much quicker the red believes in the Ferrari and just. Just place them several laps pot, and so the idea is that on the final lap they'll end up crossing the line at about the same time, and you'll have a great. Fini the other thing is i. think everyone has caught up with the history of what qualifying is I mean people always do the direct comparison of all man as instead of had x amount of pole position. We Wanna piece on that sort of history well. Things evolve and and things change. So you know we we you capable of open open-minded Tim's of what? The one he's going to look like. Prey not the qualifying lap.

"Just one spot you know someone like Lewis Hamilton saying Hey you know I'm I'm really a shame no one stepping up okay now it's time to step up and say something I mean that's a big deal even if it's not your thing to be able to realize that this is such a big deal I have to say something about it absolutely let people know that I'm with you on this and that gives more people confidence to do things as you know it looked even from the ground level up whatever it is and it is a bit like I said maybe it means more people run for office maybe it means more people want to run for sheriff for what he want to become police officers or firefighters whatever it is but that's what's going to start it and that's why this is so important and there's such a big emphasis on if you're silent you're compliant and so eventually it doesn't mean you have to weigh in right away and you have to let people are okay like but at some point you know that that is not you know so far you know far away from it you have to let people know what you think if you're an influencer like that end influencer gets sued derisive name and I think justifiably so these days on social media but the fact is when I talk about how sports have world influence there are some people whose thoughts good or bad are seen by literally millions of people and not just in this country so there is influence to be had use it for good Twitter at how about a fresco the Jason Smith show at my Carmen Steve to say you're in tonight for Mike also those are the two things I'm telling you those are the two we want to help foster change those two things vote or get involved L. or do both both those things or what's going to foster change other coming up next speaking to change how bout James Dolan.

Lewis Hamilton on How His Formula 1 Career Led Him to Collaborate With Tommy Hilfiger

"Welcome to inside fashion at this week. We're sitting down with a race car driver Lewis. Hamilton is a six time Formula One champion but he has also started collaborating with Tommy Hilfiger. I sat down with Louis the day before. The collection was launched at London fashion week to get his backstory to learn how he became one of the most successful Formula One drivers in history and the approach he used in his collaboration with Tommy who made a very special appearance towards the end of our conversation to talk a little bit about what he saw. So here's Lewis Hamilton. With special appearance from Tommy Hilfiger inside Fashion Lewis. Hamilton how are you? I'm great value. I'm good thanks for having me tomorrow. Big Day it is has been a huge build-up as so much work has gone into to have in the show here in London. Which is really important for me to have and You know I get to be involved in so many of the elements in for example. Choose London as the launch of the two thousand Twenty Spring Collection Spring Summer collection and bring wanting to really highlight the fact that I am British. Yeah even though I'm working with US brand and you know see. Tommy you see a lot of the American flag everywhere and I wanted to remember that. A collaborative Both and also there's just some so much culture here and style and great autism so it was very important me to bring you cool before we go in depth on the collection. I wanted to go further back. Because you know the hard work didn't start with this collection and it goes back many many years to bring you to the position where you can even contemplate doing something like this absolutely so. I never interviewed a race car driver before so educate me and little. How how. How does someone become a race car driver? How does that even happen So I mean we kind of stumbled across it in the sense that so I started racing when I was eight K. My parents with us to live with my dad on the weekends. My Dad was you know this kind of Awkward Guys I. What do I do this little kitten? You know like a lot. Dads are and the thing that I loved loved. 'cause so as left car is crazy about cars as a little boys are in yeah and So that tons of toy cars. I used to Had A little radio control car and the actual like the initial point was I was full and our next door neighbor from the one bedroom. Flat that we lived in in Hatfield He built models of boats and he had built this radio control car. He was driving in cocking on the road and he came over and join. Do you WanNa go and I was like yes about two and I remember driving this thing and I was really good remote control car. Everybody was really quick. Yeah 'cause a big one that believe for thousands four year old able to control this little car with a joystick controllers and so then he bought me one and we started racing four hours racing against people of our age. Who's young establish Over ten years and and I remember to watch the racetrack. You stand on the podium to look down upon it and to to go with the Kind of defense to the over. I had to stand on like three D. A. K. cases and racing. These guys who you know. Spend their hard earned in to raise these. Cause and unbeaten imagine how angry these look. These guys were Still four yards five years beaten. Us Am anyways my dad than was like Hayes head to Akron Coordination's clearly very great and I think he was talking to someone. That's why didn't try to go when I was five. I went to Spain with my dad and we came across a go kart track and that was the first time I drove a car and again that was natural so I thought my dad bought me one from an old newspaper. The back pages was V fifth hand yet villain by like five. Six families really bent and crooked and rusty and stuff. My Dad resprayed woods Stuff like diy still like being Hewlett was and then we entered some races and we one from the one the fresh race. And I loved it. Some I if you do you keep working out at school will do whatever. I can't keep racing. We WanNa First Championship when I was ten and the rest is history silent. Us Thirteen by full monty. Youngest EVER TO BE SUCCESSFUL. Is that one day. We Start Recruiting People. That time right but now they do so. I was the youngest ever to be signed. And also you know. This sport never been diverse. Yeah was gonNA say because you didn't come from like a privileged background. It's a very expensive sport. It really is. So what was that like for you? It was? It was really for me as a kid I was. I was having fun in A. Yeah we go to school in my weekend. I'm going to my friend's house devastated by Rhonda Right and I loved it so much am but my dad was really hot for my family. My Dad remortgaged had to remortgage house. God knows how many times He had four jobs at one stage in the early stages which sounds crazy because there was no future plan for us you know but it was just hoping that we love doing but it was getting more and more expensive How can I? How can I make money to pay for the tires this weekend? How can I keep the call going? Nowhere weekends wells like aside to do a race number desert. I'm I'm sorry. I've done the money this weekend. So He's been the the one of the most infamous stepmom. She's coming to a new relationship as a kid there and she gave up her life. Saving and belief and the commitment was just. It's so special to the real story is not the success that I've had that that people from working in a working class families can really relate to dance. Who Don't know what to do with his. You see people out there today. Support naked on the side of football pitches the same the same thing and there's not a lot of Jarvis data have that background so as the Honda to a lot of people to relate to. But that's the one. I'm trying to make sure that people know because we came from nothing you can do it with a lot of hard work and of course you've got to have fortune on the way in the sense of meat if I didn't meet the boss of the four one team a win of signed and without that signing I would have made it because we would add money. Have you seen cool runnings? Yeah Yeah of course. You know my favorite that took place in Calgary. Yes I grew up in. Calgary did yes. I was there for Olympic no way where the Jamaican bobsled team shown. Yeah Wow and I got two weeks off of school does those. I was in the opening ceremonies. Actually no way so I spent the whole and we were obsessed with that to make him pops team no way. Yeah the the W tops. 'cause I was I was like I don't know in one thousand nine seventy five thousand nine hundred eighty eight. I was thirteen years old but yeah I remember that team. Why Cool runnings? I'm just remember watching cool. Runnings Is My favorite movie and causes. So just the most relatable story that had as a kid so I always relate a lot my life to that movie casino. They arrive this rust bucket at the top of the hill. For the first time they put out and everyone everyone goes quiet and I always relate to light me. My Dad arriving you know would race track the race rapid he would say with trump's because of you know what we have these great close the 'cause shoved Shoved in the back of the boot of vodka and we be picking up on the floor and it looks doesn't look good and A lot of people looking us like what they doing here. You know because again. It wasn't a diverse group. Is it always been a white dominated sport however there was in in the early stages there are there were some other families are trying but they would have they run out of money but So a lot of that you know we just did our talking on the track as they did in the Post said they kept. They didn't win over the nitty. Did they narrowly people's Hopkins? Yeah they did. But you've you've gone on and you become you know without exaggeration. A living legend in your field six F one titles the first one at the age of twenty three youngest ever at the time. What what did you learn about achieving success at such a young age at such an elite level? What does it take? Yes you had some lock. You had clearly got a gift incredibly supportive home environment but at the end then again it comes down to your dedication and and then the focus on what you wanted. Yeah talk to me a little bit about that. It was really difficult out. Search the journey. I think people generally seem to own see the tip of the iceberg. Don't know if you've ever seen an iceberg unknown. How big is beneath the huge? Yeah and there's a picture I found that shows you the success one sees this little bit on the top underneath his world however is so you know. I'm people tune in today and see someone that's one times in the championships and 'em probably not fully aware of how it's taken me years Windows Eight. Danton pro to those twenty two and when I got two phone one so the build up to it. It's just not prepared. You prepare to race. Don't get any preparation tons of media training. You don't get prepare repression tons of what you know. No-one said this is what's going to happen when people start seeing on TV. And that because that's a real shock to the system and Am working no this when you work with a big station when his thousand people behind you working to make your decisions out on the track impact every single one of those you know so if you're selfish Choices and you make mistakes and crash. Everyone feels it. Sure there was a it was a lot of pressure but And again being that we came in every conversation so you the first year the first back from one driver. This never been here again. No diversity in it's only me my dad really people of Color in the in in this which is quite felt alone. A little bit in that sense But it was a great platform for us to do something great and

So, but there's always the big attraction. Former on the big show piece behind it and for anyone into the glitz glamour of it, the former on is still very much the, the, the top class in that sets. Also, the engineer for Wallace still why. Why? Highs child. The go-to ratio to sell stone, seventeen go on the speed of the cars. Highest returns backers back just absolutely for. We do still have big manufacturers as we talked about Renner will ready Birt's. We still have misdeeds Ferrari, and Honda to the big engine manufacturers that are still competing on the world market. So that's still fantastic to see these big names involved with the sport. -absolutely. Yeah. Definitely is, is probably the, the main sign the F one is very much a healthy product at the moment, if I was liberty IB feeling pretty good about the future knowing that with just a few little tweaks everything could even be better or be even better rather. But yeah, we, we are currently looking for good things about Formula one giving the the the past few races. And, and I'm not one of those who immediately just after a less than eventful rates. All maybe even a processional rates, which we do get in all most sports in all types of championships. At least a few times in a season. I always liked to look at the positives, whether awesome and mention the opposite of that when is relevant. But I just saw a nice change. Guys are just thought you know, we instead of going with the rest of the world with joining that bandwagon, I just thought. Yeah. Actually, you know, everyone is still the best motorsport on four wheels. Still today. Q very taught me. So the best drivers I could I could definitely argue Lewis Hamilton in, in any other former sports. It's still do. Well, same with you, even say me vessel and look for and stop and I'm convinced that if you put those guys in any other former motorsport still.
