"But both of them were were very very strong. So you have all of these off track interests that you share with carlos. What about said. We said. It was a little bit of a different relationship. I so him a little bit more like an older brother. I mean he had so much experience that it was different. It was not the same type of competition that i had with. We said then. What i've have with carlos with carlos we're more or less the same age we are so competitive with everything severed moisture and so he was a little bit more. Yeah he was a bit less competitive with everything. If i wanted to win something he will basically let me let me win this thing and i'll be happy and he wouldn't care with gallows. It's a little bit different. I can see. He's so soapy stuff. If i'm visiting him at anything it can be the most stupidest thing and he will be so angry and same for me but with said what you've just described is only off track right on track. He was as competitive with you as the next person right. Oh definitely definitely then once you put the helmets. There's this whole relationship eat stops. You just think about the performance you just think about trying to extract the maximum out of the car and especially bittu the guy. That has the same car as yours did he. It awkward with sabe. I'm thinking brazil. Twenty nine in particular so clan down the side of sebastian. Federal himself up into fourth place festival. We'll get trs. Tell the retro pasta county now. Five back tougher now for the tax. Cut a punch caused by. Contact with his teammate sebastian. Federal so but then we came here. Didn't we there was the break the first six months of last year. But then we came here and you guys make contact again. Turn three in australia. Ferrari's birchall contacts. Yes they did. Both ferraris try to fight over the sign peace. Can you just described that. The debrief after those incidents. How hard was it between the two of you. It wasn't that hard actually. I'm in brazil. Was probably the moment where it was quite difficult. Were right after the race on me right after the race. Obviously with the heat of the moment is not easy then. I think the thing that was more difficult to manage is how much media are coming into play and putting a little bit of of excitement in this Trying to make things exciting and trying to make to the people that they are actually tensions when there weren't so we knew there were intentions but we also asked at every races. We came whether there was attention. And and yeah i. I think we managed eat very well and the there was never any tension in between us in sure. I think it was quite straightforward. Because whenever i do mistake. I'm just putting my hand up and that's it for brazil. Had my opinion he had his opinion. So and we never really got the answer that we we both wanted so Basically stayed like this but we dealt with it very well and there was not any tensions. How's your relationship with sebastian. Changed since you've stopped being teammate. It's very similar before very similar. Before i mean we always talk whenever we see each other. We we still have discussions conversations. About how is it going for human stunt. How is it going for mean in ferrari and and yet the relationship is the same now when you look at all the guys at the front of formula one they will have a very close relationship with their boss. Unthinking lewis hamilton toto wolff. I'm thinking max for stepan christian horner. Can you just describe your relationship. With ferrari mattie been otter is going very. Well i mean matia knows me since Since a long time now. Since i am in in gp three so he's been a longtime that he sees me coming. He was not at the position. he's now at the time but that didn't matter and now to my bus fills Feels great had a very good moments together now. We are in a slightly more difficult moments. But that didn't change that. Never change our relationship. We have a very good relationship. We are very close. And and yeah. Everything's going good ego to contract with ferrari that takes you through to the end of twenty twenty four. How much of a risk was it to sign such a long term deal couple years ago now. Well i've signed with for hurry so i don't call that i mean for me. It was an incredible opportunity. As i was saying the first time. I knew i was going to be a ferrari driver. I couldn't believe it and it's a it's a dream for me for me. It was it was not a risk coming was signing for five years for the team. Always been dreaming of so. Yeah then surely. Of course we are. We are going through more difficult moments. But that's only motivates me to to push even more the team to try and and and bring it back to where it belongs. Would you be happy to spend the rest of your formula one career in red. of course i will be. Yeah but i'll be more happy if we get back to winning Because that's what matters and i know that this is what matters also for the whole team. We are pushing like crazy to try and combat a twinning. Because this is what this team is used to because it's been a rollercoaster as an i. Think back to twenty nine nine bahrain. Your fast pole position sitting that in front of me. I'm convinced you're about to win your first grand prix and then of course reliability comes into play any finished third but to hit the ground running so fast with ferrari. You must have had to pinch yourself by then. I felt incredible can remember exactly like the the greed especially i remember. It was very very very busy. There were like. I don't know like thirty photographs around me before. Getting into the car. And i was trying to put myself in my zone trying to not think about too much about the surrounding i did it but starts then came back to the leads pulled away that everything was in control and then the failure another failure but we had a problem with the engine which costs us to win. It was a difficult moment but on the other hand. I think i kind of proved to myself that i could do it. That what counted the most these day even though it was obviously difficult to lose to win. That's interesting so it's kind of a confidence thing. A breakthrough moment. In that way. I deserve to be at the top table. Yes no i. I deserve more. I can do it if i if i put everything i if i don't do any mistakes if i do the job in the car i can actually fight for victory and from that day. I knew that this was a possibility. Charlene knew that you knew that already. I.

"On with in racing watercolors. Its biggest strengths. The way he works. He's biggest threats he's a very Very clever guy and he really knows how to build up a weekend. You know he's He's very good at building of the weekend from fbi to the race working well on the car and the very important points of the car not really. He's not really looking for the laptop until it really matters which is in qualifying. But he's he's always they're very consistent to. Is he the best teammate. You've ever had just looking at the whole package previous. Marcus ericsson alfa romeo ferrari sebastian battle. Now call it is a difficult question. Carlos is a very very good team. I will no inbetween seb and carlos. I think Seven his good days. I mean the last year was more difficult for for said but in his good days he was just incredible and just incredibly difficult to to bit if not impossible and calisi just very very consistent. "The lewis hamilton of nascar. He won ninety. Three races took eighty-one polls and showed unbelievable longevity by starting seven hundred ninety seven consecutive races over twenty three. He was quite simply the man in stock cars. He's now retired from driving and has more time to pursue other interests such as his passion for one. He's long been a fan of our sport and he doesn't need a second invitation to talk about formula one. he's right up to speed with what's going on in two thousand and twenty one. He knows many of the key players including lewis hamilton. Toto wolff and fernando alonzo. And he's very happy to relive that famous williams test alongside pablo montoya on the indianapolis road. Course back in two thousand and three jeff's observations on formula one also fascinating the cars that people the format of the race weekends all of it. And as a co owner of hendrick motorsports the mercedes of nascar. If you like. He's also got a keen on what it takes to win. And what's truly inspiring is his passion for f one and just how close he really came to make that big leap from nascar to f one. I hope you enjoy our conversation. Jeff is such a pleasure to have you on the podcast. Thank you very much for your time. I guess What a pleasure. When i saw this come across my My phone of his. I absolutely. I love that one. And in the podcast is great in so look forward to being part of it. Thank you i think. A lot of people are asking thinking to themselves. You know how much of a fan of formula one as jeff gordon. Well i mean. I'm as much of a fan that i watch. Every practice. Every qualifying session every race Maybe not live. I might not get up at three in the morning. If it's not a you know a time that that that is. When i'm gonna normally wake up but i might get up a little bit early Yes so you know i. I've i mean i've always been a big fan ill. I wasn't always know. Nascar came a little bit later For me from when my early beginnings of racist always a wheel mainly dirt in indy cars. A also formula one and then You know as as i got older. I started paying attention. More more racing and formula. One just became something I want to watch these events. More knives always fascinated with qualifying But i was typically racing right so so. I didn't watch all the races on sundays. And then i drove the williams. Bmw in that whole experience changed my life. I was like oh my gosh. I had no idea what these cars were capable of in from that moment on. I would for being a fan to be an avid fan. Ah y'all wanted to watch every everything that You went on at the track and and of course. I wanna follow williams and the driver's young. Let one of them on toy that. I i met he drove. My car drove his car. When we did that swap in indy. And and so from that point. I just start washing. Now i watch it say religiously every weekend so i followed there very much and any no. I'm in the broadcast world now. i'm in the team ownership world and in so anything that could learn from form the one If there's something that they're doing it again qualifying pay attention to qualify in knockout rounds. I think is fascinating You'll we have done some that nascar You know from team. Ownership standpoint of of johannah teams are Operating whether know how how they're financially bringing in the marketing side of things you. What are we going to have to look forward to down the road now with nascar as far as You know engine nearing aero-dynamics and of course we're never going to eating from one but there's still a lot can transfer over you can learn from and maybe there's something young even that they can learn from us got to know. Toto Well and and he's been he's been fantastic to to talk to at times over the years and Keep saying we're going to try to make a trip over in see their facility and love to get him our facility but Yeah you know. We even have at nascar Sports we have some some folks that used to be in the in the form of one space in engineering aerodynamics. What let me in. No doubt that you are a genuine one. Finding it's wonderful to hear i'm interested. You're fascinated by qualifying almost more than the race from what you're saying. What is it about quality that you love so much well you in. I don't want to put down the race. I love the race. Especially when it's wet. But but i think that for me qualifying. You're you just have to push to the limit of the car right. No fuel savings In the way it's set up right now where you know they. They get that that final set assaults in the final round. They can push the car to the mac. So i just love. Seeing the drivers on the edge is no strategy. Just go fast Know hit your marks. And in in your. Let's let's see how plays out and and of course you to me it. Not just not. Just you know the driver's pushing it to the edge. We see the true speed of the race. Cars typically and You know in of course. There's a good fight like like there's this year between red bull and mercedes than Uc i think you see a little bit more of that are i. Guess it gives you the anticipation of what you're going to see on sunday. So i don't know i like the knockout alike physio who's not gonna make it into the top ten Your fifteen or sixteen in. So it's you know i dunno. I find that a lot of fun in in great watching and i'll say subduing more entertaining than the rates. It is fun to see them on. The limit is i do agree with you. Let's go back to two thousand and three is actually an eighteen years ago this week or that you were doing that. Swap with juan pablo montoya in in that williams after twenty four. You said at the time. This is probably the coolest thing i've ever done. How do you reflect on it now. Still nothing's changed. I mean it's Top it is if drove occurred for the one car but I just told me if you're listening to be happening but Yeah i i. of course. I've driven a lot of different types of race cars over the years but at that time i really just been driving. Stock cars and on the high bank oval tracks of scars poll. Some good load in jesus and and and you get a great sensation of of the raw power now in force that car can do. But you put that car on a flat road course like indianapolis and it's gonna struggle right. It's going to struggle in the breaking is going to struggle in the corner and so You know to have the absolute comparison on the track on the same day of the two cars Jus- just was mind-boggling. You know just just how different was The breaking zone There on the front straightaway going into turn one two. There's a big their six young markers. I couldn't even get to the six marker in the in the stock car and it was. How do i get to the one marker in in the former one car maybe even past the one mark. So you know. That's insane the amount of breaking the biggest issue i had was that hans by.

jeff gordon Jeff ninety juan pablo montoya pablo montoya indianapolis fifteen fernando alonzo two thousand Three races eighteen years ago eighty-one polls seven hundred ninety seven con one car two cars sixteen one marker six young markers one mark sunday
