"Society. You're also seeing a much more diverse group of composers. It's just not dead white guys or even live white guys. There's a much broader sense of a bipoc community who are amazing composers out there. It sounds like what you're saying here in some drew is that symphony orchestras across the United States are finally putting a little more effort into trying to cater to their audience, which sounds like something that they probably should have been doing the whole time? Well, at least for the last 30, 40 years, yes. I mean, ideally in the perfect world for the whole time, but I'm also willing to be a realist and save you want to go back in the 50s and 60s. That was not the way America operated. Unfortunately. You didn't have to do it back then. Exactly. Right. I'm curious as, you know, the orchestra insider. What your opinion is as to how much influence Gustavo duhamel can have, leading one of the biggest orchestras in the country. And now moving to the other. She's in a position to where, if he can change something that is as entrenched and as old school as the New York film harmonic and get them to change their mission directed activity toward being meaningful to the surrounding New York community, the greater burrows, creating something like analysis program that the orchestra doesn't just give minimal money and lip service to, but a real multi decade investment that lasts well past when due to Mel will be there. That's where he can become an example of how to be that catalyst that changes and helps orchestras or break out of this decades old site. Drew McManus, orchestra insider, he's an orchestra consultant based in Chicago and he hasn't seen tar, doesn't want to. Believe it or not. "Co sponsors in the Senate. And so if it needs 60 votes to pass, it's very likely to pass. I think people have the perception that environmental issues tend to be very much liberal issues supported mostly by Democrats, but often actually wildlife conservation is a pretty bipartisan issue, and that's because it is important to hunters and fishers who often tilt conservatives so there is that support on that side and also what's important about this bill specifically is that in preventing species from being listed under the endangered species act, it is in theory preventing high regulatory burdens and costs associated with the endangered species act and that is very appealing across the board because it basically means if we put the money in now to restore populations of animals, that means that we might not have to list them as endangered, and that means we can avoid a lot of government regulation that a lot of people don't like, especially on the conservative side. So I think for those reasons this bill is pretty popular across the aisle. Today's show was produced by Hadi moagi and edited by Matthew collette, it was fact checked by Laura bullard and Tori Dominguez. It was engineered by Paul Robert mounsey. The rest of our team includes halima Shah, siona petros, Amanda lewellen, Victoria Chamberlain, of shy artsy, miles Bryan, afim Shapiro, Gillian weinberger, and my co host Sean ramas firm. Our supervising producer is amna el sadi, we use music by brake master cylinder and Noam hassenfeld, and were distributed to public radio stations across the U.S. in partnership with WNYC in New York. I'm Noel king. Today explained as part of the box media podcast network.

"It was a gateway drug and before long i'd be on heroin and have no control over my life. When low talks about the community they serve. They use the phrase people who use drugs. It's also the phrase. I'm using throughout this piece because it doesn't judge or assume anything the line between what qualifies addiction and what doesn't can be blurry but the language of the war on drugs racist any nuance instead lewellen. I grew up hearing about drug addicts and abusers and we got the message that these drug addicts were generally disgusting dirty lazy people. Little can't think of anyone from their childhood didn't feel ashamed of the drug users in their community and as they began to understand their family better. The shame started to feel personal. While i think i knew my dad was in the drug trade when i was in high school. They were ashamed of their families connection to drugs. They were ashamed of their poverty when it really came down to was. I'm so worried about what people think of me. And and if they'll think i'm poor and unworthy had a lot of coal miners and their family like their grandfather. Their papa pappa had a a stub for the on one side and he was really like. I'm gonna tickle you with this or whatever. And i was like you know when i was a little kid but It was because he fucking cut his thumb off while working in the coal mines he just typed it back on and work there today. Fill the fuck off and did not. There was no saving you know that. It's kind of like the expectation of the legacy of the coal monir. You know you. Produce produce produce in you work really hard and your whole life. the community little serves. They are poor but little doesn't see them as unworthy. They spend a lot of time thinking about the various types of pain in their community. Like a lot of people around here have decaying teeth. It reminds me of the stereotype of an appalachian person. He uses drugs. A toothless hillbilly. That person is usually a punchline but not to lil make herbal medicine for people's teeth. What is that this yellow. They can just like slow down and stuff like there. There's a room in little small house that's devoted just two people who use drugs and to the philosophy of harm reduction. It's called the harm reduction. room harm. Reduction is the practice of doing what you need to do to get by and feel good while doing little harm as you can to yourself or to others harm. Reduction doesn't require people to abstain completely from risky activities just to take steps to minimize the risk if during the pandemic you wore a mask so that you could see your friend but lower the chances of giving them cova. You were harm reduction if you've ever had sex with a condom. You were practising harm reduction. And if you're in this community using heroin in southern west virginia making sure your syringes are clean is harm reduction food. I sit on an exercise ball in the harm. Reduction room in little shows me their supplies. There's clean syringes and other tools to make drugs. Safer pipes for drugs like math that minimize exposure to the talks. You might inhale smoking off of tinfoil tools. To test for fenton. All extremely potent synthetic opioid that will increase your risk of overdose. Especially if you don't know it's there more and more drugs label those heroin or meth contain fenton. All the supply. I hear about the most often. Besides syringes is narconon narcan the overdose reversal drug. They use. to save. Bruce's life is generic name the laaksonen you administer it when someone has overdosed and passed out and he's not breathing. There's two versions one. That goes up your nose like a congestion spray nasal narcan and one that you inject and you pop this off. Stick the needle in there and They want to inject someone in the muscle so preferably lack the thigh. Something funny about me. That people might not realize because i have a bunch of tattoos and the work harm reduction. I used to be scared of needles. So even even coming out even in the last year when i started injecting testosterone. It was weird to get used to indicating maceo so the first few times i did it. I like didn't do it hard enough in it like hurt more than it needed to. you know. Little has administered naloxone many times but still. They're scared when they do it scared. They've arrived too late and all people that have been administered. Naloxone forty or fifty times this year. You know it's not it's just part of being a person who uses drugs with the drug supply. They have. They don't have the safe supplies so they have an insect supply. So that's the option you know and when someone comes back what's that like They have no idea what happened. You know they definitely don't know that they overdosed until you tell them. People that are really struggling. You'll hear them say like oh. We should've just let me die. You know people have said that to me And i'm always like. How could you say that you know like your life is so precious. You know you're left with just my hands it so precious little most of the time if people who use drugs who administer can be what their friends are getting high when something goes wrong but in west virginia. This is a legal. There's a long list of rules in the state code about who can legally administered narcan and it's mostly limited to healthcare workers and law enforcement with a few exceptions if people actually followed those laws. What would happen. It's hard for me to even think about that because like personally at my community. Almost every what i know. It'd.

"What f. In analytics says i don't care why you have a certain guy for a certain situation. Seth lugo barely threw a pitch and he was great. The game. well. It sounds like it's my because this is what we do in baseball. We have our find roles and everybody needs to come in and we have used to dr bolton bullpen for the next day and also the crap. No you win the freaking game. You're playing and that's the way i look at it and i was mad. That lewis roasted that. And i knew he was doing it. We all knew he was doing it. We knew as soon as seth lugo walked off the mound after he had that great inning. Probably five or six pitches just a couple more weeks. You have to worry about louis rossio couple. I had an opportunity. And we'll never know. Maybe seth lugo would've got lit up in the eighth inning. I don't know but trevor may came in like you just knew that something was happening. You knew bro. you felt it. I felt that. I and i know met fans felt it three runs later down ron and then all of a sudden chapman looks like chapman again. Yeah of course. I understand you have a very important game. My opinion for the yankees. Get back on track and win today at two o'clock because i mean they're out of the postseason right now and you've got the blue jays editor surging and who the hell knows others is going to go. So in the boomer. Thirteen game stretch that you love this it right now. The didn't include the mets in the law. I did. I did so right now. One and two. They got ten left. That's right. I eight and two i gotta go into in this next stretch nine of one and as far as the bedside side of things you know how i feel the it would take a miracle for them to get in the. I've been down miracle. I think they just got a no miracle. No it's not. they're just not good enough. Take a miracle so the lindores conforto trio and offensively this weekend. You see what happens when they start hitting the ball and things start happening on the base paths right now all of a sudden be consistent. You're gonna be consistent. They scored a tunnel runs this weekend. Okay that's the thing like. This is what we as met bands. This is the now. Listen the yankees throwing guys out there. I'd never heard of. They got guys that are showing up and put them out there. It's like the mets. Should be hammering these guys. So i would just say that the lineup this weekend and you know the swinging bunt by jeff. Mcneil was awesome. Play those are great things that these are things that we thought we were going to see all year long and it's one of the reasons why francisco indoors been booed all year because he hasn't had those magical games like last night. Oh yeah i mean the last night you don't expect that every night but least a couple times a season and finally got it but he's also understanding that when you do perform especially here you're gonna be beloved. You're going to you know the fans are gonna go over the top for you because especially against the yankees. And he's trash talk and getting their face. I mean the met fan is going to really love that right so you add conforto byas and linda all wake up this weekend. They won two out of three. They scored a lot of runs in the only reason they lost that game on saturday night is because lewis row hostage. Leave seth lewellen. I mean i. It's one thing except lugos out there. Three twenty five pitches and grinding thrown inning. But that wasn't the case. Yeah so stuff working right. I think he i think he through. I don't remember a six or seven pitches at that much. We can't bring him back out. Nope not what the plan was. You know that the plan wondering about the as anyway please. Hey diaz gave you the logic last night but then ended up getting the job. Don't you kind kinda felt they get them five. Nothing on saturday night but it just felt like there was going to be something unique happens. Something dramatic happened on certainly did and it and it certainly didn't happen for the yankees but it still was very entertaining game. And like i i wasn't. I was disappointed that we lost. I didn't like the decision. But i gotta tell you. It was a really good weekend of baseball when lin door and by his or are hitting their passion there in your face their trash talk. All that stuff is great. Obviously when they're not they look very very silly. But i mean last night. You're seeing them. You know getting the faces of giancarlo stanton point. Come on come out here but the fact that landlord did back it up for the first time was was great. But i mean those guys. Like i mean when i first started chirpin. Lynn doernen ended up. Great i was like can you just. Can we just win the game. The you have to be melted off to like this has been a brutal year. I know everybody was such attornal but obviously he was spectacular last night. I don't want to criticize him because he ended up backing it up. If you listen to john smoltz and and joe buck talking about Havi bias. I thought it was really interesting. We know the guy is a great baseball player. He's ridiculous his baseball. I q and everybody talks about. It is off the charts base running as ridiculous. He's a tremendous field or he's extremely athletic and he swings loosely at the plate. That's basically the thing that goes against them but the way they were talking about how much money i think he's gonna get an who's going to ante up for him. It may may be the mets because door wants them to be there. And that's going to disappoint me. I don't know man he. He's like a really unique player. Man he he's he's i wanted them. Here he's electrifying but then he gave the. I know i wanted them here now. I want no part of him. He may not want to be here. That's the thing he made up getting a big deal from somebody who needs a shortstop and who's gonna play the position correctly and effectively and athletically. I wouldn't give big money to the yankees either Interesting yeah i wouldn't give big money to either or has been at this asked baya's or conforto i would not and i know conforto turned it on. I know he's a homegrown met and owen. He looks on. It's one of the sweetest swing when he is on. It's one of the swings and baseball. All this stuff played a really good outfield this year. I'm just scott boras agent. They're gonna ask for the moon and he is not consistent enough to give hundreds of millions of dollars to knows nothing thing. You always hear this about when guys are in contract years or looking for contract extensions or whatever if you remember for. The season started when they made the trade for linda door. The discussion was oh. You got to get a contract. You can't go into the season you know. Because that's going to be on his mind and it's going to adversely affect this before man's gotta give them a contra bobo blah so. They gave the contractor endured. He's been an abject disaster offensive and they didn't give the contract to conforto does but abject disaster offensively so so what is it. Don't give them the contract or given the contract. Yeah i don't think it matters. It doesn't matter at that point. It doesn't it doesn't really matter and i feel bad for michael because i like michael. I think he's a. I said he's a homegrown met. He's a good dude and you want him to do. Well he's never gonna give thumbs down to the mets fan. I know that fact. And we're all pulling for all of them to do well and lindores felt it last night mean. He had a ridiculous game last night and he felt what it means to be the center of attention on the positive side. Yeah and this is gonna be the classic sports cliche. Is this going to be the thing that gets lindores going and could carry the team in the wildcard it. I i think that it is and i. That's the way i felt. I mean to me. There's eighteen games left right. I mean how many games are going to have to win to get into the playoffs. In your opinion out of those thirteen. You think they could go thirteen and five and make it yeah. I think it might be better than i'm assuming other teams going to obviously lose and then there's been a lot of slop in the wildcard for sure. Yeah yeah. I mean that's still even if you're saying thirteen in five that's a lot that's asking what and it could be. It could be more than that so thirteen and five of them eighty five. I mean they're going to see the phillies right and they're gonna see they're not gonna see the reds that the cardinals and start the cartoon that's rice week So.

It's surprising how liken thick trees and ferns and blackberry bushes and it's right underneath freeway so there's a lot of noise so people could yell and scream or be running up behind you and you wouldn't even hear it right so those are things that they definitely had to consider that you don't really think about as a civilian. I know said. God swore you know there was a beer. Cannon paled on dex limb. And so i knew that this guy was alter non unsure if he was involved he said he was with a guy came short on okay. He positioned body exactly how she was and how she was gagged newspaper. All it's kind of been wondering how the body was discovered and who initially reported it like could he have been the person maybe who discovered the body and reported it. Maybe that's how he had some of the information he wasn't He wasn't the person that reported the body. Basically it was a camper. Okay that was. There was a a campsite nearby and they noticed it they had to track those leads down to make sure that those folks were in right and so he did a lot of like research as much as they could given the circumstances of where the body was and but this was the first lead that somebody you know. He knew about the beer. Can you know so. That's where it's like. Yeah it's a good thing. I had to take that photo so he either had to be there when the murder occurred to know where she landed or afterwards but it sounds like he wasn't there afterwards so yeah so he's basically just because he knew things he wasn't claiming to be the killer so they're trying to figure out what his motivation is and he's constantly lying with some truth sprinkled in and finding out what chilies motivation became not only like a really important detail because who were they dealing with. And why does he know things but he doesn't know other things where to get out of jail and was trying to play me wearing. There's no way in heck. I was going to allow that but i after awhile while you let these guys sound player. Would they think they're playing you. And but i was leery of him because he is he yet violent past in. Imagine having to be the ones to do that trying to build rapport and then seemed like just when this cat and mouse game would chilly. Stalled chile would come back to mikey. Mike again with another detail. For example chilly once gave them a name mark smith but when they tried to identify the guy they couldn't find any evidence that he even existed. They started to get more doubtful about chilies information. And that's when he decided to show them. Where antoinette was discovered a tour the murderers at von decomposed body it was a mile from the jungle was writing next. I ninety around roundabout way. He told us about that he goes. I know her another body was down. This guy said he killed a girl up there and he knew details about the crime scene like the beer can impaled on the tree lynn and nieces black purse but as far as the person who he claims is the murderer. Who's distracting as the laura and the son of one of the more important rulers died in an accident and so the ruler sent a troop defined this nymph missile. When they found her she was rescued by father ryan. Who took her away to the bottom of the river. So romantic seen again reasons For the low ally and white became important There was a very sharp rock wall. But the the water swirling around it created several vortexes which created a murmuring sound and the ancient celtic word lewellen probably means to murmur by the name. Lalai she who murmurs. It's this difficult corner. And boats could be really literally sucked down at that corner into the nineteenth century. by the mid nineteenth century. The river had been improved and the problem was no longer there. Neither is the murmuring. Sound has gone to so it's safe to get your boat passed the law right now. You're tourists will be on the deck taking photographs and the In the music system will play folk song from germany. that's things about the lower and then everything is happy. Our travel with rick steves tour guide specialists to the romantic rhineland. Region of germany are faubion. Ruger who is raised in west berlin and now lives in maine and nico federal whose home base in bruges. Belgium is a medieval town. Often added onto rhine river cruise itineraries. When we go to the rhine river we have to a place to sleep. Fabian when you take groups the rain river what would be the best towns for a home base for exploring that area. I personally like to be picasso of and feels beautiful. Hell and you have a gorgeous view of the rhine but in terms of ancient medieval architecture and good wine and so on of course. I'd prefer baha over an caracas famous for its wine even back in engine and it has original houses of the sixteenth century and still has its famous wine festivals. So you can sleep at the castle next in a hotel sort of built onto the rhine fells But i would say back iraq and saint gore. Those would be the best to towns to stay in and each of them would have plenty of great little restaurants and affordable hotels and nico tell us about the steamers are the just the ferries that take the tourist up on the river. How would you go about cruising the ryan if you didn't take an actual cruise ship and all you just wanted to jump. On one of the varies you can. For instance if you're located in some gore either a stop there you have a ship that comes here. He can make it as long as you want. And there are several stops along the rhine so depending on your time bending on whether maybe you can also just take ferries across the rhine. Those are fun ex- and don't get the commentary but you just cross the river and then continue further. I would say the best part is from saint gore tobacco wreck that we've been talking about because it goes by the lower lie you see the most famous castles and then you can continue on by train. You can do it. Slow by boat or you can do it fast by train and you've got obviously you've got roads on both sides of the river to and as nico said we've got these wonderful fairies. That crossed the river there. What six or eight cars can fit on a ferry and then they just go all the time and throughout june july. The wine festivals. What is quite wonderful. I think if you're up for it you can rent a bike or bring a bike and to a several day. Tour down the rhine. You don't have to go much pill because you're going with the flow of the river slowly. It's a bike path. Along the entire way then you go from one wine festival to the next. What could be better. That sounds very good. This travel with rick. Steves we've been talking. About the romantic rhine river valley are guides are nicole barbara and ibm ruger. Nico and fabio dunker shane. Thank you compared to the rhineland. Because if it's bio-diversity i mean it was positive this great ancient continent on wanda that broke apart and so for thousands of years Plant life and animal life in madagascar existed separate from other continents. So you have a species that are not known anywhere else in world. What are the most beloved species what animals do love see. It's a cuddly liba far away you know and the obscene. "Like. Oh how embarrassing. Oh my god. I love okay would watch. Let's write it so into this okay. So meanwhile percival finds stockton kills him and takes the watch with the list on it but he doesn't tell the rain that he has it when they'd like meet up to make arrangements to escort spyglass to west berlin because they're providing safe passage to him and his family to the west and then shortly after that this is when we also see percival colluding with the soviets. He's talking to once. The guy's name bremmer vich and so things seem pretty shady. They're the more last names that introduced us stuff. The harder of time. I have which is why i never got. A game of thrones right. Yeah in general anything. That has a lot of names is a tough one for me Especially because there's so many like codenames to or like names of people who you don't know what codename applies to what person and it's why. I've never been sober for a bond film. I just let it take me. You need it's so like and then and then the answer to your question of like who is is always like. Oh it's the guy with the beard and then you're like well that's actually really not helpful. There's forty of those they just come on and off but wherever they want. I didn't i okay. This was like a totally straps ovation. But the moment were john. Goodman shows up at the top of the berlin wall and he's wearing a hat. I almost didn't recognize him. I'm like have i ever seen john goodman and a hat and he was unrecognizable to me in that hat interesting. Does he wear hats listeners. Sound off in the comments. I don't know that. I've ever seen the man wear a hat. Maybe an inside lewellen davis. Ooh i think i distinctly think the backseat of a car. He might be wearing a hat but also that character has like. I'm wearing a hat energy. God i feel like i had just john. Goodman is so and. he's like amazed but he's so john goodman and all of his roles and i was just completely thrown by seeing him in a winter hat. Like that's not the man. I i've come to live. I knew the shape of his head was like. Where's the top of that ed john. Anyways lot of brilliant observations people coming jamie. John goodman hat three question marks mark off. Oh god okay. So meanwhile percival in lorraine go to east berlin to meet up with spyglass to get him safely to the west except there are a bunch of soviet snipers targeting spyglass they are unsuccessful but percival shoots spyglass which no one sees so. Now we're like. Yeah def definitely percival is maybe not a good guy here right. That guy we keep hearing is the bad guy he might be. The bad guy might be bad guy. Yeah so then following. That is when we get this like huge like ten minute long amazingly choreographed fight sequence where it so much. She finds the soviets kicks the shit out of them for ten minutes. She and spyglass escaped temporarily but then spyglass is killed when their car is kind of thrown into a river and he drowns So now lorraine believes percival to be a double agent. This is even more confirmed when he goes and kills del fien which lorraine finds out about right away. She's sad she then finds and kills percival and it seems like percival is like this. Codename double agent satchel but wait but then we see lorraine editing various audio recordings. She's like cutting things together to make. It seem like ed i was. I wrote down caitlyn editing. The bechtel cast every cutting out all the stuff. That's like oh no one wants to hear that this is going to come out and i'm going to be admitting to so many crimes. Yes are even as a but really going to implicate you for some messed up stuff. I'm the one that burned down. The i'm the reason the hindenburg crashed. I mean you said it. During the recording i evidence show goodness okay. So she's like yeah. She's cutting things together to make. It seem like percival was a traitor. When it seems like lorraine was satchel all along but then we cut to a few days. Later in paris lorraine as satchel meets with the main soviet bad guy brnovich. Who's about to kill her. But she kills him and all of his cronies because wait. She's not a traitor. She's still loyal to the british crown. Oh wait no. She isn't because she's been an american spy. This whole time. Working for the cia and john goodman is her boss. She's not british intelligence at all. That was i got the when the movie ended for the fourth time..
