A highlight from Ricky Skaggs (Encore)

"Welcome to The Eric Metaxas Show with your host, Eric Metaxas. Sometimes you have the privilege of having a guest on the program who really is what we call a legend. And I never would say this if he were here because I wouldn't want to embarrass him, but the person that I'm going to interview in a couple of seconds, some of you know all about him. If you don't, you will very soon. His name is Ricky Skaggs. He is a legend in the music industry. He has 15 Grammy Awards in 1982. He was the youngest member ever at that time to be inducted into the Grand Ole Opry. When he was six years old, the father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, picked this six -year -old out and said, would you play for us? He went on to become a seven -year -old playing with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. There's videotape of it. In 1971, when he was still extremely young, teenager, went off to play with Ralph Stanley in his band. By about 1980, country legend Chet Atkins credited him, my guest Ricky Skaggs, with saving country music. Have you heard enough? He has played, performed, produced with Barry Gibb. Emmylou Harris in the 70s produced Dolly Parton, worked with Bruce Hornsby in the Amana Radar range. In 2021, the President of the United States gave him the National Medal of Arts. Again, I wouldn't say this if he was here in the studio, but he is a legend. And I'm very embarrassed to say I think he's right here in the studio. I never would have said this, Ricky, if I knew you were sitting here. Ricky, my new friend, welcome. It's great to be here, Eric. I was sitting there listening to you make all these nice things, and we could be talking about all kinds of other things. So anyway, I appreciate it, and you're a man of honor. I made a lot of this stuff up. I just want my audience to know this couldn't be true. So I'll have to live up to the things that you said. When you were six years old, now, you know, you're in your late 60s now. So when you were six years old, which would put us back about 1960, you played with Bill Monroe. That is very hard to comprehend. I know my dad bought me a mandolin when I was five. And so I learned, you know, why do you do that? I had been singing in church with him and mom since I was like three years old. And this is in old Kentucky. In Kentucky, and we would sing songs together at home. And then when we go to church, we'd get up and they would set me, literally set me on the pulpit, and I would sing harmony with mom and dad. They would set you on the pulpit. Yeah. See, up here, we'd say, put you up on the pulpit. But down there, they would set you on the pulpit. That sounds better. That sounds more American. But you, the reason I'm saying this is you obviously at that time already had a gift for harmonizing. You could hear and sing. And so they knew that they needed to encourage you. So your dad at age five gets you a mandolin. And already at age six, Bill Monroe is taking notice of you. Well, mom and dad and I would play at church, like I said. And then dad and I would go to this little local grocery store there in Blaine, Kentucky, and they would set me up on the pop case, you know, that had that. So it wasn't a pulpit. It was the pop case. That's the marketplace version. Right. Yeah. So I was getting I was getting my teeth ready for the marketplace back then. But I would sit and play and sing and people would want to get a Coke. So I'd have to scoot over and they, you know, it was a double door. And look, you were so cute. I saw the video of you I saw with flat and scrubs, which people can look up on YouTube. But I mean, you were so darn cute at age seven. And when he says, what's your name? You say, Ricky Skaggs. It's so cute. It's unbelievably cute. But even cuter is the song you sing. Because for a seven year old to sing a song about a broken heart and a woman who left me is funny. Yeah, I didn't understand those things back then. I just liked the song and the song was Ruby. Are you mad at your man? Ruby. Oh, Ruby. I mean, to hear you mad at your man and the 70 year old singing it while he's playing. And that's what I sung with the Bill Monroe thing. You know, it was a hit. Are you mad at your man? You know, the neighbors in the hood at this little high school for Bill Monroe was playing. And you know, they started shouting out after half hour, Mr. Monroe's set. They started shouting out, let little Ricky Skaggs get up and sing, you know. And my dad didn't plant these people, I promise you, you know. And anyway, I didn't even take a mandolin with me. So the irony of the whole thing is that I had to play this size mandolin. You had to play. I had to play his mandolin. You played Bill Monroe's mandolin when you were six years old? Six years old. And I, you know. Not many people can say that. He took the strap around and, you know, wrapped it around the curl here so that it would fit me. Right. Set it on me. And I said, you know, they said, what do you want to do? And I said, Ruby. And so it was a popular song by the Osborne brothers, Bob and Sonny Osborne. And so away we went, you know, and you know, no mistakes, no, you know, I didn't flip out, didn't faint or anything, fall on the floor, didn't drop his mandolin. Well, you were too young to be self -conscious, probably. Yeah, I didn't know what that was, you know. If you were 11, you would have just freaked out. I probably would have. But he sent me back off stage and then did his big famous Mule Skinner Blues just to rat me, show me up. No, I don't know that for sure. But I just, you know, the crazy thing about that is when I became a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, they wanted me to take out of the, they got some, some instruments in a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum called the Precious Jewels. They have Earl Scruggs' banjo. They have Maybelle Carter's famous archtop. What? They still have that? Yeah. They have Bill Monroe's F5 mandolin in the case, so they took it out for me. Do they have Mother Maybelle's tortoiseshell combs? Maybe. I'm just kidding. But I mean, who knew that? Unless you're sitting here, I wouldn't know that they would have these objects. These are like sacred relics. But they let me play that same mandolin that I played when I was six years old. He kept that mandolin all his life. He got it in 1945, found it in a barber shop in Miami, Florida. Of all places, you know, to be in Miami, Florida, walking the streets, just out walking around, and happened to look in a barber shop with thousands of barber shops in Miami, Florida. So Bill Monroe found it in 1945. And went in and bought it for $200. And used it for the 15 years until he met you. Then he lets you play it. He keeps playing it, and today it still exists. Yeah, it does. And was busted up, and still, you know, Gibson put it back together meticulously. But it's amazing. And it just brought back so many memories. It almost closed a door, or closed a season of my life, you know, to play that mandolin at six years old, and then get to play it again, going into the most famous, you know. When did they induct you into the Country Music Hall of Fame? 2018. So they waited way too long. Shame on you. No, it's almost funny to me, because it is, you know, you, listen, if in 1980, Chet Atkins, the legend, you know, credits you with saving country music from the commercialization that it was undergoing because of the urban cowboy fad and John Travolta hiss. But it's just kind of funny to me, because you've been in this world, you know, forever. The idea that you were playing with Ralph Stanley, when you were just a kid, what was it, 1971, so you're like 17, were you still in high school? I mean, you're still in high school. Yeah. Did you graduate? No, I wanted to go to the Stanley School of Music, so I wanted to stay. We started, Keith Whitley and I started when we were 16, and played the summer with Ralph, and then we had to go back to school, and, you know, Ralph wanted us to go get our education, and I thought, man, this is the education I want right here, you know. I think a lot of people understand. Folks, I'm talking, in case you're just tuning in, this is Ricky Skaggs sitting here, we will continue the conversation on all kinds of subjects, don't go away.

Dinesh and Debbie Discuss the Tragic Shooting of Ralph Yarl

"There's one topic that's been in the news, a good bit of this week, but it's one I wanted to save for our discussion about it. It's the Ralph jarl case. This is the kid 16 year old who goes to the wrong house. He goes to the wrong door. And apparently rings the doorbell. There's some debate about how much he went into the house. But there was apparently an incident with the guy who owns the house at 84 year old man named Andrew Lester, who ends up shooting the kid, not dead, the kid is injured. And as it turns out, this kind of thing happens from time to time, but this case has gotten a lot of publicity, perhaps no surprise Andrew yarl is I'm sorry, Ralph is black and the shooter is an old white guy named Lester. I want to talk more broadly about these sorts of cases, but what are your thoughts about this one? I mean, it's obviously tragic. It's very tragic. Because you know, as we've found out, he's elderly. And elderly people are murdered more often than young people, right? Because they're weaker and more vulnerable. More vulnerable, and there's sometimes they're even a target, you know, if someone knows that an elderly person lives in the house, you know what, easy prey. But and in this case, you know, it could just be that the kid was just at the, as we found out, wrong place at the wrong time, this guy Lester did not know if this kid was gonna come in and rob him or not. You know, he did, he had no idea. Now, I have read reports of an ex-wife of Lester's Andrew Lester's that says that he was very hot tempered. And that she was always scared of them because he would just kind of go off on her. So, you know, as we know, sometimes when people are that way, as they age, they get even worse.

Biden Rejects Military Report Outlining Afghanistan Withdrawal

"In this interview with Lester holt of NBC whom he said was being a wise guy for asking about inflation. Biden said he rejected the findings of the army, saying that the handwriting was on the wall that he was advised that it was going to be chaos, Americans would want to be left behind. He said, quote, no, that's not what I was told. So apparently he's rejecting the army report. Washington Post talked about a military official quoted in the document accused The White House in the State Department of not recognizing the swift advance of the Taliban. Reports to disagreements over how to handle the evacuation and the at risk Afghans. Biden says he's rejecting that report. Apparently he's calling the military officials quoted in the document. "I mean, there always has to be, look, we all love a sports argument, right? A debate. And those have been around since the beginning of sports. And I'm not saying that they have it. But my problem now is there's so much animosity that vented towards baseball toward sports owners, agents, and players that a lot of the fun has come out of it. And that's why it's important and I think we recognize a guy like John Lester when he retires after 16 years. Yeah. And again, in 5 years, hopefully we get a chance to kind of bring him back up and do it all again when he's eligible for the Hall of Fame. Well, Alex, we got to get out of here and I got to wrap up this podcast. Thanks for joining me on it. Got anything you want to push? By the way? Just full coverage. "He's stirred up the pot a little bit when it came out on Tuesday that he didn't vote for one David Ortiz. He didn't vote for anybody for the Hall of Fame except Jeff Kent. And if you're telling me that Jeff Kent belongs in the baseball Hall of Fame over David Ortiz, given how much uncertainty there was regarding steroids and help me out here. Performance and hand PEDs. How much uncertainty there was over PEDs and the testing and that's what a lot of writers like myself feel about baseball in this era. There's so much unknown. Yes, a couple of tests come back positive and the rules were set. And that's why you have to come down hard as Chad Jennings said on my Red Sox meet podcast last week. He said, that's why he comes down hard on Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez because they broke the rules after the rules were definitively set in place. But in the early 2000s late 1990s, there was so much of a gray area that Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire, Roger Clemens, even, you know, Jeff Kent's name has never been mentioned with it, but his numbers took a major spike up at that point. You know, all of these great names thrown into the pot with the PED big question mark hanging over baseball. You know, you can say if you want that practically everybody was doing it, which I don't think that's fair because I think there were still a lot of players who went to the weight room, they did what they could to strengthen their body, but they weren't going to take any of the stuff, not because they didn't want to break the rules or bend the rules, but because they were concerned about what it would do to their body long-term. Long story short, I'm rambling here. I think it's ridiculous that Dan shaughnessy would not vote for David Ortiz, but would put Jeff Kent in the Hall of Fame. What is the deal with Jeff Kent? Why Jeff Kent? Well, let me bring up the numbers. I don't remember a ton of Jeff Kent's career. I can't remember him at the end..

"Back with Alex barth of 98 5, the sports hub. Can I give you one more stat on John Lester? Yeah, please do. Okay, so when the Red Sox traded Jon Lester in the 2014 season, right, they go out. They signed David price the next year and that was kind of seen as the tradeoff. If you look at the numbers for David price and John Lester between 2015 and 2019, when price was in Boston, they're nearly identical. Lester has the edge in some categories price as the edge of a categories. I think that says a lot because price was hailed as this monumental signing. Obviously, it didn't turn out great, but you hailed as this monumental signing, right? And the guy he replaced the guy they didn't want to pay basically did the same thing. And they could have had them for a significantly less. So that's kind of you, I'm glad you did this, Alex. Thank you. You saved my bacon here. You can't tell the John Lester story without explaining what happened in 2014. And what happened preceding that and how the Red Sox let them get away to recap everybody, I think Red Sox fans know that the Red Sox had a chance to sign him at a much lower value and Red Sox ownership decided to take a pass. They thought that John Lester was asking too much, they lowballed him. And that is the reason why John Lester in the end decided not to sign with the Red Sox and the Red Sox. Waited too long and then they had to decide as we mentioned in 2014 to trade him to the Oakland a's and you know Alex, what were your memories of that? That whole thing. I was crushed. Like I said, lesser is one of my favorite players at the time. And. I knew I knew the whole thing sports as a business and these guys are hired guns and all that. Like, I was holding. I was in college at that.

"So as long as it's in the right context you're okay with it. Yeah, no, I love stories like that. And yeah, again, it gets the point where he's a guy, I think the reliability and consistency element of it is huge. I just that's big. That's huge, but I think the competitiveness is what, to me, if I had a vote, that's what would get him in the Hall of Fame. He is one of the more fierce competitors. He was great to us in the media when he wasn't fixing. He was a terrific guy to cover. I love the guy in terms of being a being a subject I could write about. I thought it was very genuine with us when he did speak to us. I thought it was very humble guy, but when he was on the mound, there was a little bit of Roger Clemens in him. I mean, Clemens took it to an extreme in terms of what he would do to try and win. I think we all know that. And we'll get to that in a little while. But I think with John Lester, when he was on the mound, he was just incredibly focused. And pedroia when he was told about that story in St. Louis about taking the liner off the leg said, yep, that sounds like him. If you have two of them, you're good to go. That's what we used to say if it wasn't an arm or a leg. You've got another one. Get out there and play. So Dustin pedroia, I'm sure supports the John Lester bid for cooperstown, I think, in 5 years, I think, I don't know if he's gonna get in on the first ballot. I doubt he will, depending on what the class is at that time, but I think he definitely belongs in the Hall of Fame..

"Anyway, I went with my mom took me and my brother and my mom's a cancer survivor and she knew John Lester, she was well aware of Jon Lester's story. We were all well aware of John Lester's story. You know, we were big fans of his, for that reason Andy was a good player. We used to donate $31 to the Jimmy fund every year because that was his number. So to see his no hitter with my mom, that was just a really cool moment. So, you know, from then on, Jon Lester's always been one of my favorite athletes because just what he embodied. He went about it the right way all of that. So a hell of a career. And again, it's a shame he didn't get to spend more of it in Boston. Indeed. And yes, that no hitter that happened did happen back in 2000 and 8 against the Kansas City Royals, really was in a remarkable achievement. And really, that's when the tracks what would have happened, what would have happened if 14 year old me ran up to you coming out of the press box and said, I'm going to work with you one day. What has said, get the F out of the way, kid. I'm going to make you part of the Fenway concrete if you don't get out of my way. And I'm sure I unfortunately said that to some poor kid. But on May 19th, 2008 Lester through a no hitter in a 7 zero win against the Kansas City Royals. In that game, Lester through a 130 pictures allowing only two walks striking out 9 batters actually was charged with a throwing error on a pick off attempt in the second inning. It was the first no hitter thrown by a Red Sox lefty. Do you know since when? You probably don't know this. But I'm going to ask it anyway. Is it since cyan? No. 1956, Mel Parnell. It was the first Red Sox left handed picture since Mel Parnell in 56 to throw a no hitter. It was I was there. It was a remarkable achievement given what John Lester has been through and had been through up until that very young part of a portion of his career. And he picked 16 years in the major leagues. And that in his third season was his only no hitter. And certainly a remarkable run of success from 2007 through 2011. He kind of fell off the cliff a little bit in 2012, but in 2000 and 9 he picked 6 and a third perfect inning striking out ten batters and 61 pitches through 6 innings and that was against the Texas Rangers who at the time in that season were leading the American League west. But you know when I when we talk about a guy like John Lester, obviously everybody understands what he went through early in his career overcoming cancer. And to me, that's a remarkable achievement in and of itself. But after 16 seasons, I think he belongs in the Hall of Fame. I think he's going to get there. And I think he's going to get there for that intangible that if you talk to any John Lester teammate of his over the years with the Red Sox, the cubs and the Cardinals, he was a very incredibly fierce competitor, Alex. Yeah, again, he was, I think, the thing about Lester's and I kind of said.

"Covering all things Boston sports. He's a great follow on Twitter. One of the things I love about Alex barth is you can really kill him for his passion. And his sometimes absurd hyperbolic takes on Twitter. But that is Alex barth. You should be following him at real Alex barth. He does a great job covering the Patriots, but he also does a great job of stand on top of other things, Boston sports, and that's what brings us to the Red Sox. Two big storylines we're going to get to in this Red Sox beat podcast. First of all, on Tuesday, a Red Sox legend retires from Major League Baseball and I don't think that's hyperbole. One of my very favorite words, John Lester, retiring from Major League Baseball after a terrific career, one with the, that's obviously started with the Red Sox. I think he's a Hall of Famer. Alex is based on his Red Sox career alone, but then he goes to Chicago with the cubs, starts game 7 there, wins the World Series with the cubs, of course, the cubs snap that incredibly long drought World Series drought dating back to 1908. And they broke that in 2016 in Cleveland a 108 year drought. And any finish up this past season with the Saint Louis Cardinals, he was part of that historic 17 game winning streak that got St. Louis into the wild card and got them into the postseason. So John Lester goes out of winter, your thoughts, Alex on John Lester's career. Yeah, well it's a damn shame I didn't get to spend more of it in Boston. I'll tell you that first and foremost. Everything you kind of want, you know, he wasn't the flashy ace. He wasn't Kershaw, got like that for a lander, but you felt good when he was on the mound. He was just a, I think, consistency is something we undervalue as sports fans and sports evaluators like maybe a guy's peak is so high, but you know how reliable are they John Lester? You pretty much knew what you were getting every time he took them out and he'd go out there and get on the mound. He started over 30 games. I believe every season of his career until this most recent one or for the most of his career, the early seasons, obviously interrupted, but to overcome cancer and then be that reliable physically. I think is really a testament to what he did. And I mean, a lot of people talk about Lester in the World Series and all that. I was actually at John Lester's no hitter. And it was a very cool moment for me as was I, I was in the press box covering it. Yes. So I was 2010, so I would have been like 16 years earlier than that. Let's go back. I think it was 2000 and 7. I believe it was 2007 against Baltimore. So I would have been 13. My Kansas City. Now I gotta look this up. Go ahead and continue. No, I think it was one of those buckles, one of those is Lester, Kansas. Anyway, Kansas City, I believe, is Lester. But I'm looking it up. Go ahead. Okay..

To Compare September 11 to January 6 Is Beyond Absurd

"To compare january six to nine eleven is beyond absurd it is it is reprehensible and his byron york points out in his scathing column about george w bush's speech to compare january six to nine. Eleven is a rhetorical trick. If you will that is it's beyond ridiculous. It's it's it's it's awful. There is no comparison. I'll never understand what got him. The heads of those few hundred people on january sixth. I don't know anybody who defends them. In fact the best anybody does in trying to defend them is doing with. John just tried to do and suggest will they didn't even exist. It was a bunch of antique people. It was not. It was not that. I saw the guy to there. Were maybe there were a few people from antiphon. "Right is always thinking about this. This brand as a challenger brand to the old guard established meet sports media and entertainment media. Essentially they were just a brand that. When i read that question it just jumped off the page at me. What i was reading about their current results not necessarily a specific add or a specific creative that they've put out but just the overall body of their work and how they think of themselves as disruptive and challenging. I think a couple of years ago when we were in atlanta for the super bowl they were like okay here. We are in coca cola's backyard. What are we going to do and they did. A lot of like really edgy. Disruptive things to stand out in kinda poke fun at the fact that they were in coca cola town and coke actually played back into it because it was like better to jump in on the joke. Then be not in on it. I guess So they're one that always jumps to mind for me when it comes to the not letting themselves get too big and bureaucratic. Even though i'm sure people inside there say we are big and bureaucratic and a lot of ways but from a brand marketing standpoint. They don't think their brand that way. Then the david and goliath example. I hadn't thought about this before. But like dave pointed. Dave is like literally named david lilley born into that mindset. I think probably keeping that mindset of the sports media started the sports media. Now he's going after all goliaths financial services community a big. Cpg you know. "A self admitted mama's boy i tell you i don't know that i dealt with it immediately. The healthy way. I will tell you. I learned through coaching that. The only way to get through. It was to actually sit ins to enact. I remember i found a couple of meditations that there and make you think about it. Whatever it is. I would come out of their pollen cry and you know what you start to become very comfortable in your own skin. So i've been on an airplane and just to your point volley. Just try the design. They came on the radio. The the ladies hair look like my mom's hair. I've been on a spin by one time and thought roma loves fitting like they're dispense up again. I think you know you use the word. Authentic alive a flying flip. What's people. Think about me as so whether that's coming from my parents or or just the level of confidence arrogance. Whatever i might have that word authentic consumer comfortable in my own skin and i've worked at that So i think when you're a teenager in college you join a fraternity you have an identity was a jock had an identity but at some point i really did i think sales gets you a little bit of that in like baseball right. What do you call some of the failed. Seventy percent of the time for hall of famer. A i just think that boozing and stuff i think if you come out of it with your head on straight can can make you avalon. A level of peace end the last thing. I'll say about that. The expression that i love is you can't read the label from inside the jar. I heard that really dog. I'd be like okay that the lowered the universe is not that there is some bigger plan that i just don't know about because i'm in the plan and you're gonna only know it when you get through or whatever so gee chapter ahead. Yeah they go hand but let's see what the next year's would do it and that's that bachchan. Yeah gosh it's so good. It's so good i mean if you are listening to this point so when i'm talking to people whether it's podcast like this or in a coaching call. I'm really listening. Kind of just for these things and two things that i heard you say which i think i want to reiterate so people here so the first one back to this idea of authenticity being comfortable in your skin again. I don't know you super well. But i've observed you quite a bit. We spent some time in common space together and then obviously a lot of common friends. And so when. I hear you say i don't care what anybody else thinks about me what i really know you mean. I don't putting some words in your mouth. You're about like what i know you mean is is you. Carry yourself in such a way that you can be proud of the professional successful. Kind empathetic considerate person. That you are so your character demonstrates to people like i am this quote unquote good person out in the world and at the same time when i bear it all when i cry when i have an asshole of a day and you know i just happened to put that out there for people to see. I don't care if people judge me for that because of already demonstrated to them. That i have this character and so that character allows you to just be you all the time and if people don't like it tough shit right like i mean. It's just. It's the way that it is so i really appreciate that you say that that you said what you said and then kind of just like putting that together for people to see again too many people when they say like. I don't care what people think. They're idiots because they need to do some self work because they should care because they're not putting off who they really want to be So that that was really really big and then the other thing that you said you know about not being able to read the label from inside the jar. I love that analogy. Because you know. I mean i am a deep deep believer. In god faith to me is at the forefront of everything the center of everything that i do whether or not you to agree to that you know we have to start with the foundation of like. We're here for a reason. I mean if we're purposeless in being here than we are miserable and so if there's yeah so if there's purpose then we can take the loss of your parents the devastation of your island and your business. You know the tragedies that i've gone through losing people close to me watching things happen. And it's like i frigging hate it. I hate when bad things happen. And i'm never going to be like. Yeah bring him on like. I'm not excited about bad things happening. But right but i can get to the other side in say there. There was a good reason for that. And i may not see it in a moment i may not see my lifetime but by me going through it something good to me or somebody else has happened as the result so i just love that i i really like that and the thing that i really working on is stopping to glass and now i'm able to even and so if anyone like me like i'm such fashioned s that the day i don't look at the date they got. They didn't get along and began. Latin male athlete native of reinforcement worse. Working hours. your name going to be a license. You don't do it so but national even like the planner that i have for michael. Hi abby now fortune ave and say hey worth it. I gotta written down. What did a dinner. Let's celebrate now. I don't know if that's a real word. But i'm gonna use it And i always now look back at gary. V talks about that. You know that immigrants hustle and all i've ever known right knocked tallest guy. I'm not the fastest guy at the smartest guy. I will simply just out work you when we were in in sales. If you made twenty calls today. I made forty and i read. It's a numbers game and so that was like that in my athletic career shooting some ways. It's probably asked more girls out until i got dates out of it. They'll work me money out and or the point that person. I can point to cook my parents especially my father. He always instilled in me. You can't control a lot of things but you can control your hustle and your work and your for your word and so when you now then see a Were rounds the almost forty three almost forty three. So i'm gonna draw correlation that you will understand to meet. My father was optimus prime so he could not be hurt especially latin mail. You did see him cry. There wasn't a whole bunch of i love. You like hugged stuff. But i never doubted the man love me because he showed me the ways. He knew how to show me whether that was filming every baseball practice. Whether that was making me do the things that maybe. I didn't want to do that now. I look back only god so rate for having experienced that whether that's working at age thirteen or were you doing things around the house like nobody got a free ride like that was just a deal in so if you ask me. What's the thing that this whole moment. I take from the dowd story. I really do think that my father instilled the work ethic whether or not it was shoveling poop or doing something that you love doing it was yet added. Do it in specially. If you told somebody you were gonna do it. It was your word in so those two things work ethic. And i've got people that i have committed something chew and so this life the entrepreneur. I can tell you besides make my parents proud of may the other motivating factor is. I've got now seventeen. employees. I wake up every day thinking if you screw this up their livelihood get sued ups and i think that i'd never took me again. Forty one years to kind of related. Input all these things together. But that's the thing. I take most from from that part of that. That's so big. Man i i. I don't think that people do that kind of work. Especially on this like real big train right now. Really focused on men and successful men. And i feel like men do far less of this work than anybody else. Because it's like you know whatever happened to me. Just kind of shove. That shit down. I move on dusted off. I'm stronger than that. Tougher than that. A grinded out. I mean it took me years. And i know some of it but i mean my dad left when i was six. There was a period from twenty to thirty twenty one to thirty one that i didn't talk to my dad for ten years and all of the ways that now today my dad and i have an amazing relationship and i can still see the good that came from all of the time of him of of being brought by him and in certain times the bad but even how that shaped me for the good but it took me continuing to go back into that and for me i mean. Even i had a conversation with a guy three weeks ago and he was asking me questions and he goes. Well what about how that like. How your data affected that. And i started to cry and it had been a long time since i cried about that topic and so i think more people need to spend time not digging up the bad but just going back and digging out. I believe the gems that are in there and the opportunities. They have to positively impact their life now because clearly. That's such a fuel for you. I would not have ever thought that that was the right thing to do. I'll give a prop to steve. Platonic is he was the one that kinda may be again. He's a cuckold shoots air more. So what happens is that we're on stage and Betty who is hiring in her kitchen. There's just some guy there right during the live performances. During live performance if great guy rando guy and she is in leicester as opposed to be her paramour. He's supposed to come through the window so he's recovering for being unconscious. He's recovering from being unconscious. So what happens is she's telling you know ben he's trying to tell the guy to get off stage in at no but what happened but the reason why he can't leave is because for some reason he is stuck to the cabinets by his suspenders. So he goes to run off stage but then his suspenders snapping backwards. They're stuck in the door. It's so their second cabinet door suspenders. Propel him backwards through the window that lesser she essentially like a slingshot as lesser has just regained consciousness in his ready to go through the windows. Nasa guy lying at leicester so now this is tuned for to lester has been knocked down. Yes okay then. It's simply because of that snaps. The dog flies through the window. Yeah the reason snaps. The dog is window and so we're supposed to have dramatic music during this phone. Call that any supposed to get from her husband and of course because somebody has knocked. Blinky sound sound Walter essentially because he slammed his baton but in the control room in the controls move so the phone sounds like quacking duck. And there's you know she takes a phone call from her from her husband. Oh wait i forgot. Something goes flying through the window banning screens. Yes posing his cue. That is supposed to be birth right. Yeah so he comes in and start. The high caught you with another man. Apparently at this point you know in life performance because that guy is read another and there's nobody there in the kitchen besides betty at this point so slowly backs up back into the kitchen door and exits through. The deal is supposed to be. That's he's supposed to come in. After lester comes through the window. And they're professing egypt alum to each other. But that's so he's supposed to call betty. So what happens is is he calls betty but the phone rings and it's cracking right and he's like you know betty's line is where are you. It sounds you're calling from the lobby downstairs. Okay how would you be able to tell about whatever yeah. So he's with a you know how he's maybe she's. He's called her from the lobby before i don't know who knows. Yeah but he He's doing his best. Bird is not the greatest actor of and he's doing his best. He's saying you know i. Yeah okay. I was there momentarily moments ago to pick up some papers now. I know my office clear across town. And i won't be home until later but for whatever reason the staging think they're now supposed to take the fun out of the ticket out but with bert it. So yeah so. We got that going on. They're supposed to have Dramatic music right but it's some sort of little league jazzy scuffle music and then some nearly like old like detective movie detective the case type music in taking on the case music and it's supposed to be like a love theme but for whatever reason this detective on the case mood music cues like what looked like amazonian headhunters and a raft arizona or africa or whatever paddling fake paddling across the stage for no reason for not like i have no why they're there because it's obviously not their show commercials so it just makes no sense. It's just responding to that music for some reason. So lester guy.

"I could read a lot into that statement interesting interesting. Tell me about your mother. No let me tell you about my mother. Tell me in your own words. Only the good things you remember about your mother anyway yes. So let's let's get onto blinky watts. Who is the tracey walter character. Yes i absolutely adore. this is again. It's a ridiculous made up thing. that's completely nonsensical. Totally david lynch type of comedy blinking. Watts is the is the master sound effects technician. Yes but he suffers from fictitional disorder called boseman simplex and i could just say i don't mean they're up to you but could you say how much i love that. Little aside where we have a narrator says blinky. Watts is not blind. he's actions rosen. Simplex actually sees twenty five point six two times as much as we do. King is seeing right now. It would look something like this and then you see like four of toys. Like tribesmen toys. Only oven oven knits and like four versions of the person that is in the room. So you know he's one of those laws statue things. Yeah yeah so. The the problem is is that blinky soundboard has to be the absolute right position all the time because he knows where the switches are just by sort of looking at them way. So if you move it at all he's he's not gonna be able to. He's able to fix it right and they actually telegraphs gag. That happens later because there is a sign on the side of his control panel. Whatever then says you not do not move. This are precisely position for or whatever. Yeah and of course it gets moved during the chaos. Of course you're just live. Tv show right there is. He has an assistant. He's more like the super. He's more like the supervisor. Named mickey he's the guy who tells blinky which buttons to push he tells linking which buttons to push up. there isn't if there was an issue and The smelters juniors carried by the way johnson junior characters and then speaking of sides. We've got a rally in raymond friend as the hurry up twins right who again sight gag. That is funny because it's supposed to be funny because it's because it's unusual but the hurry up. Twins are a pair of conjoined twins who just walk around the set going. Hurry up hurry up and whenever you see them the narrator says hurry up twins it's not their only conjoined because hey they're like two guys. They're wearing a sweater. That fits over both of them. Exactly so what. What actor has like one arm around the waist or something and vice versa. They are twin brothers in real life but they are not conjoined twins. they're just wearing a giant sweater. that that's the gag. Yeah then of course we have irwin. Keyes who play shorty. The stagehand of course. It's a pud because he's a big dude. He's he's huge like seven feet tall right a. He's a. He's very good natured. But you know something risings always going go wrong on. Juries watch is episode involves a rather large bag of pots and pans that he struggles to mold onto at a very important moment so exactly exactly so and then. We got burt shine. Who is just kind of a little worm character actor playing gary. Gary grossman gear the actor. That plays bert shine yet. But here he plays andrew. The the husband of betty's character is right 'cause tonight on the lesser guy show. We have Lister guy show tonight is brought to you by welby snaps dog food gifts. Which there are the dog snaps. The dog refuses to eat so they have to tie string string around his neck and pull him down to the they feed the string through the dog bowl. And then attach it to the dog's collar. So i love the way the roof explains this. She's like yeah so so essentially we we we drag snaps against his will into to the dog ball to make him eat it exactly. So and that's another thing too. Is that every every week. We have a difference sponsor for the list of guys show tonight. It's welby snaps dog food so there's a shot later on that snaps actually vomits up the dog which is so david lynch right. He's all about vomit as we've learned especially in wild at heart it's wet. They'll say you bet if it's dry. Say omar mind if it's powder they'll barked water shelby snaps doctors. We'll play. Thank you very much so this is again back in the golden age of television where commercials were shot on the same sets as the tv show because it was all of online and you would have live to save studio studio. You'd have live tv going on and then off to the side they'd have somebody preparing a commercial. Then you cut over to the commercial which is where you get the dancing chesterfield's or Religious chesterfields where the dancing lucky strikes. I forget dancing cigarette packs things like that so and you would often have the star of your show giving the you know when i was doing the commercial less what. That's what guy does here because there's a a run through for for For miguel fares character buddy by waller so after they do the actual episode. There's they cut to the commercial. And you see guy changing his clothes putting it on a different blazer. Or what have you to do. The commercial accompanied by like four. You know Showgirl types general types in the background. Yes who's who's seeing the dog jingle. And so of course everything goes flawlessly during the rehearsal as soon as we go live everything goes crazy and go sideways. First of all one of the things. That's been happening. Mr macgonagall has been drinking coffee and shaking day. Yes just got coffees like my nurse. My nerves mr mcgonagall. And this is yeah. This is david lynch thing. Here but yeah. He's the producer so he's on the floor and he knows that he's he's all anxious about it so he he's got two cups of coffee one in each head yet any shaking so loud the coffee spills all over the floor the floor of course being a sound stage hardwood floor it it starts to work the hardwood and it kinda comes up right. What like when it goes live. Yeah basically buckles upward and is causes the camera with over in turn sideways nocco and we see russia sideways. Yeah bragging cyprus and during the show we see cuts to the american public watching the show.

Like what do you mean by building relationships that fleshed out in having conversations with people It flipped out in helping people to reunite their family members. A hill Fleshed out in helping people to recover their identification cards. Because oftentimes we would Billy's relationships in the end discover that there was a a barrier back towards Getting back into self sufficiency. Any kinda grew from there We actually officially launched a center about five to seven minutes away from the atlanta hartsfield airport. Where many things go on In that center Anything from helping people to recover their. "Of the like themes that keeps emerging on the show is this like beginner. I think designer mistake. Weird like designing and avoid like. You're at home goods and you're just kind of collecting all the things you love. And there's no like common thread or theme or story so that starting places so key It's really important to create. This is so easy now that everyone has a computer in microsoft word or i mean. If you know photoshop you can do it. But what i told people is if you're just starting out in let's say you're doing your apartment right in your on the super tight budget. We've been there by no means do am i just design fancy desire by no means that i have like five hundred dollars to do my college -partment right. What i want to do at home is starting out with your concept. Okay and then put all of the pieces that you're interested in on a concept board and get take that were with you when you're shopping and when you're at home goods and you're ready to do those stupid impulse purchases. Take that word out and be like. Is this gonna vibe with my vibe and if not put it down like i can't tell you how much did at target and homegoods ikya just on this little impulse purchases like other cushion but it can go with anything your house. You know who so. I think that will help a lot of you know that extending allow you to save up for this really special items may be utah out of your budget. You'd be surprised how few rain in those impulse purchases house saving. His moustache lightens is easier. Yes my gosh. That's so beautifully put when you say it. It sounds so obvious. But that's definitely something. I struggle with so hard told me this dog will. What am i going to do. A federal by this dog role. I it's in the air. they try. they try to say you know. Stick with your list. Stick with your concept word and then there are great finds there. You found some really great things that were with my. I try to stay true to that. Naccache excited put everything your car. I love that so much so we talked a little bit about finding like some examples of info pieces like the flower or the photo. What are some of your favorite places that you draw inspiration from is kind of like all over the place or do you of go to things that really deeply inspire you know. Of course. let's be really honest and frank. Kerr pinterest is though. It's great so i will say that if you're on your this first few hundred pages of pinterest. It's the same stuff right so if you're different you're going to have to do a deep dive so we like to say is find that you know chair. They love or find that whatever it is. Maybe you're really intimate century right. And you figure out the name of a charity like deep dive into that and then that will take you to other really interesting rooms and you'll get away from the disorder sort of stuff. You're seeing everywhere so good if you're willing to sit down into a deep dive. I like to olds. Who books like books real hard. You know find a designer or topic. You're interested if you want farmhouse than you know. Do some searching on amazon worse. Farmhouse designed books. You can get great inspiration from those pages that you know. A lot of that stuff is not on pinterest. So you're knocking not everywhere. I did a lot of inspiration. From austin is what the color palettes that are happening. How close structured is everything floral and saucers everything sharp edges. And how they feel about that and is gonna translate into if i hit more curved items or you know i think you start to develop your style when you're pulling things because people don't realize that they have their own patterns that emerge and with our clients do a pinterest board for us. They'll say we'll do. I need to tell you what i like in each picture. And i know 'cause i can tell if it's repeating throughout what you're picking so. I think that happens with with regular people to start picking me compile. Tear things out. Taxings things up. And you'll start to see a pattern and then you can kind of narrow it down from there right. I feel like part of your job as a designer. Obviously like did these beautiful spaces but there's another level of like really kind of like helping your clients figure out who they are style wise. And that's something. I feel like that when you can do that artfully like. That's when you get the coolest spaces. What does that process. look like. You mentioned the pincher sport but is that where you start or there's a consultation like what is that. Look like when we you know. Most of our artists are really large-scale right. So we're starting with these people when maybe they're buying a dirt lot and we're having to design their home from the ground up right and then we're not only designing interiors. Were signing all the finishes fixtures and then all the furnishings so the first thing like to do is save them from themselves right because we're giving them everything they're asking for the help that they need for right so the first thing we do. Is we through these. These pinterest boards. We asked them to pull some images. Maybe ten twenty images. It's really all we need. We start to see a pattern of what they like. And from there we say. How can we take this and make it cool. It's not a cool right having to take this push their boundaries. How can we take their level to wholeness and make it a level head right if we see that there it into brass. How do we rain that in. Say okay will. This house has to have longevity. What ross isn't trending in six years right. How do we incorporate those things that we see. They're gravitating toward in in a way. That will live with them for a long time. So a lotta times. it's really just pushing their boundaries. And saying you know. I see that you posted. A couple of pieces of contemporary are either boring but how these bright suit. Our job is to take them right. The edge of where they would say. I never would pick back but i actually love that. That's what you wanna tried. Do to yourself. If you're at home right. You know i do. I love this. I know everyone has this chair. But i found this chair. His kind of weird ways hungry woman. So you know. How can you get outside that that box of trends and really do something.

Then you you think the worst like what happened there, right. Right. So that's It scared me. I'll be honest. I appreciate it. You know, I felt like Ebeneezer Scrooge for a minute where I got to see the ghost of Christmas future Like so I was dead and you guys were all remember me And I appreciate I thought cat maybe would have been a little bit more choked up. Like I expected tears from cap. No shot. He's good with those. I thought, maybe you know, honey, I felt nice. Nice eulogy. Yeah, it was written is right here. Written ready to go. They just can't afford him. It's not personal. They're broke. They made an offer as soon as he got another offer after telling him when he reached out to the owner. Yeah, we can't make any officer. Maybe they didn't have the money at the time when the nationals made the offer, And then the money came. It was called Cover your ass. So if anyone says today that comes making offer Yeah, after I already got the offer when he called them and said What do you want to pay me? Three million. Let's just get a deal done. I don't want to go anywhere else. They had a food bar that they had to try to look for the money. So Jon Lester and Kyle Schwarber on the Washington Nationals now, Dave? Yeah, they just want to go to the inauguration. So is that it Now they're they're good for them. Was there really any chance that Lester was going to re sign again with the Cubs? I mean, I think there was a chance, but it sounds like the Nationals. Made him a better offer. And that's presumably white took it. I mean, I don't think there was ever any guarantee that they were going to get something done with him here, and he goes to a team in Washington, where he joins a rather formidable Rotation with the Shires, ER and Strasbourg and Corbin and Yeah, they got Schwarber out there and who's got a better starting rotation. Now the nationals of the White Sox. Why that That'll be good question. That could very well be a match up. I don't know if Washington is going to get back to the world serious they wanted a couple of years ago, but they had a bad year this year, but Yeah, that's that's that would be a pretty good match up to say the least. No, no news from from my cubs. Nothing happening. No, no move. Nothing. Nothing Earth shattering that I've heard up. Well, why I make a change of things are going so well, uh, tell you what happened overnight. Here we go. It's 20 degrees 5 30 in the morning of Steve Mechanics that is is sponsored by Team Hochberg.
