Why Elizabeth Warren Is Wrong About Crypto and the Fentanyl Epidemic
"Featured story is an opinion piece by CoinDesk's Daniel Kuhn. Our piece today is entitled, Why Elizabeth Warren is Wrong about Crypto and the Fentanyl Epidemic. For a while, crypto's role in the illegal and gray area drug trade seemed swept under the rug, or at least it was not getting the attention it could have, which is good and which the Fed shuttered back in 2013. It's good because some people have a tendency to moralize about drug use, and the less crypto is linked to crime in general, the less the entire industry will be stigmatized. However, it would arguably be better to be upfront about such things, assuming they're going on, as data now suggests. If crypto ever has a shot at finding a killer use case, or mass user base who understands why blockchains are important. U .S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, is calling for a greater crypto crackdown following new research from blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis and Elliptic that found Bitcoin and Tether, or USDT, have become cornerstone to the global fentanyl trade. These are the same research companies that put out annual reports showing a fraction of a fraction of crypto transactions can be tied to illicit use. Quote, crypto is helping fund the fentanyl trade and we have the power to shut that down, Warren said, continuing, it's time. End quote. The Senator is a longtime critic of crypto, who recently made an incomprehensible anti -crypto army campaign part of her re -election bid. But does the Senator have a point? I already know what the crypto faithful will say. Chainalysis estimates less than 1 % of total crypto transactions are related to crime, so it doesn't matter if Chainalysis is now saying there's evidence. At least $37 .8 million worth of crypto was sent to drug manufacturers in China since 2018. But hold that thought, we'll get back to it. First, let's try to place crypto's alleged use for drug sales in the context of the global drug trade. To start, it's difficult to judge just how large the fentanyl economy is, because it is, by nature, kept mostly out of sight. But if Chainalysis and ellipsis figures are to be meaningful, they need context. According to one source Chainalysis cited, total quote chemical exports, end quote, from China, assumed by most authorities to be the largest manufacturer and exporter of black and gray market drugs, surpassed $100 billion in 2021 alone.

Canha, Carrasco lead Mets to 4-1 win over slumping Phillies
"Mark canna and Carlos Carrasco led the mets to a four one win over the Phillies. Can I highlighted New York's 5 hit attack with a two run Homer in the third inning and a two run single in the fourth, both Aaron nola. He entered the night hitting just two 33. Sometimes it clicks and it doesn't necessarily mean that you get two hits and have a great night. I think sometimes it clicks and you have some bad luck in the pitcher makes like really good pitches and you go over four. Carrasco scattered 6 hits over 6 innings. Bregman's 7th Homer of the season started a three run second inning and the Astros led from that point on. I think we just came to the park and tried to battle today, trying to swing at good pitches and fortunate enough to do enough early in the game because they pitched really well. Debt Ceiling Deal Gives Unlimited Debt Until 2025
"All right, friends, well, today, as I said, we are hopefully wrapping up or at least putting a big momentary pause on the macro story that has dominated markets for the past few months. Yes, a deal has been reached in the debt ceiling standoff with both President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy making major concessions in order to move the matter forward. The deal on the table would suspend the debt ceiling entirely until the 1st of January 2025. Presumably this puts off the next dispute over federal borrowing until the middle of that year and uncapping the debt limit in the interim. The core of the argument is a two -year cap on federal spending, although each side is presenting the story slightly differently. The White House claims the spending cap would reduce spending by around $1 trillion over while the GOP argue that spending cuts are twice that level. New York Times analysis puts the spending reduction at around $55 billion next year and another $81 billion the following year. So let's talk about what's actually in the deal. The set of tradeoffs in the deal have caused outrage among numerous groups of ideologically aligned lawmakers and special interest groups on both sides of the aisle to the point where there are few truly happy with the compromise. Now that of course might mean in America's polarized politics that it's actually a good compromise deal. IRS funding has been cut, with $20 billion of the $80 billion in additional funding to bolster the tax department now being repurposed to fund discretionary government programs. And what's worth noting here is that early in the negotiations, this IRS funding was a red line for the president. You will no doubt remember when he said that he would not accept any deal that benefited quote wealthy tax cheats and crypto traders. Another aspect of the deal was that work requirements for food stamps recipients will be expanded. However, the cohort of people this will affect appears to be small. Only impacting recipients aged 50 to 54 while exempting veterans, the homeless and people who grew up in foster care. However, negligible the effect on the budget, the expansion of work requirements within the benefits program was an important symbolic policy for hardline conservatives. And small as the concession might seem, there are still many on the left who are very, very against

As rising oceans threaten NYC, study documents another risk: The city is sinking
"New York City is slowly sinking under the weight of its skyscrapers and other structures built on top of it. I'm Julie Walker, as rising ocean's threat in New York City, a study from the U.S. geological survey documents another risk, the loose soil like artificial fill. That was put in to enhance some of the land areas and that can sink just under its own way because it's so poorly consolidated. And if you build on that, of course, that exacerbates it. Lead researcher Tom Parsons also says parts of the city will eventually be underwater. It's inevitable that The Crown's going down the water is coming up at some point, those two levels will meet, but I'm not able to give you a date. The research team calculated the more than 1 million buildings spread across the city's 5 boroughs, add up to about 1.7 trillion tons, Julie Walker, New York

Biden, GOP reach debt-ceiling deal, now Congress must approve it to prevent calamitous default
"A debt ceiling deal has been reached by President Biden and the GOP now Congress must approve it to prevent a potentially disastrous U.S. default. Negotiators agreed to some Republican demands for increased work requirements for food stamp recipients, but stopped short of greater spending cuts overall that Republicans wanted, House speaker Kevin McCarthy calls it an agreement in principle worthy of the American people. As historic reductions in spending, consequential reforms and lift people out of poverty into the workforce, Rey and government overreach, there are no new taxes, no new government programs. In a statement, President Biden says the agreement represents a compromise, which means not everyone gets what they want. Central to the compromise a two year budget deal that would hold spending flat for 2024 and increase it by 1% the following year in exchange for raising the debt limit for two years. Support from both parties will be needed to win congressional approval before a projected June 5th government default. I'm Julie Walker

"You quit working you still have enough income coming in to maintain and pay for your debts. So are you tracking with me. So far yes. Oh yeah i'm tracking. Yep okay so because we had huge debt and we had no passive income. There's no way we could be financially successful but one of the first things we did is we were taught in that weekend. One of the easiest ways create financial freedom is to simplify your life so my wife and i the first thing we did is we sat down. We had a hard conversation as sound like this. What don't we need right now right now in our life that if we were to get rid of the expense we would be shorter journey to financial freedom so we sold the boat. We sold one of our cars. We started offloading debt that we did not need because it's nice to have it but the stress and we weren't using it properly anyway so we and could here's a difference. Another difference between rich people in poor people rich people think long term. Where do i want to be. Poor people think short-term that ratification. What can i have right now and unfortunately as you will know a lot of the younger generation right now. It's all about the instant gratification. Absolutely absolutely well good news. The good news is the younger generation. When i was younger generation it was the same for us. We all go through the same stuff. We want that occasion where young. So there's no generation gaps here. We're all repeating the same cycle that every generation goes through plain and simple and let let me take it on a side know who. Fw declerk i do not know he was the president of south africa. Actually set mandela free and in two thousand nine. I was hosting an event. Because one of the things. I also do. Is i get to host amazing trainings where we have some of the top thought leaders in the world. This particular training. I had as on the station that i got to meet because the host we had the dalai lama to richard branson were okay. Hold on no. I'm sitting down. Well let me just stand up and sit down and really what yeah. I've been blessed to share the stage and train..

I tell people. I have one brain cell left. And i'm doing everything i can to take care of it but you don't serious note. Remind me. We'll come back to. Why i say i have one brain so left so in the mail that we got this letter and said thank you for visiting our booth. And here's two tickets to amazing three hour evening that'll change your life and each ticket was worth thirty nine dollars and i'll tell you the only reason we showed up the only reason we showed up to that three hour a training was because thank goodness our mind would not let us waste thirty nine dollars tickets and i'm glad we walked in that room because it blew us away three short hours later we find ourselves running to the back of the room paying six hundred dollars to go to the three day weekend that we were told to take us to another level and this is march of two thousand one and on the train was to go ahead and it does have some clear man this is also still while you're six figures in debt correct that's right oh yeah so that's the funny part is because essentially we leave a couple of days later we now go through buyer's remorse as well as what the hell did we just do. We can't afford six hundred dollars. What are we doing and so on the day. The train started. We showed up with one goal. Get our money back. That's it and i walked in with ready for a fight. Tell me. I can't have my money back now. The most amazing woman who later became a great friend. She knew what was going on in our minds. And she's like there's nothing. I can do right now however. Why don't you come in until lunch. Let me check some stuff out and at lunch. I'll come find. You will figure out how to get a refund. And i'm like fine. So i go out to the vehicle so i go to the vehicle because my wife hadn't even come in. She's like go and get her money. Let's go so i went out. Nymex explain to my wife. Look we've gotta go in till lunch but at lunch. Were getting a refund. She's like fine. I'm never gonna to find the same way again anymore after that. Then i've achieved my goal so we go in and we.

We knew how to run a store but we didn't know how to run a business and you talk about you know motivated and the grind. We knew how to grind. But we didn't know how to have the success in that grind. We didn't know how to really get in and work like the business. It should be if that makes sense and now of course we learned along the way and we were franchisees for a total of nine years and we started making pray eighty good money but our mindset was for spending more money than we're earning and have you sean. Have you ever met anybody that spends more money than the iron man. Let me tell you. Sometimes i tell people like yo that that that's why you guys you need to get credit card. You need to ensure that whatever you put on their credit card you have in your checking account to pay off in full best. You can at the end of that month now. Of course we're not talking about like if your fridge breaks. You don't have two thousand dollars sitting there but if you're gonna go buy some food or go buy your groceries. Don't put a thousand dollar chargers of two hundred dollars in your checking account. Don't don't not spend more than what you have and see. That's an actual step right there and it's called. What gets caught up for most people what happened for my wife and i. It's the instant gratification things things that we all. yeah. I want this. Do i really need it right now. Now but i wanted and people will go for what they want before what they need. And that's what got my wife and i into trouble at eight year mark. We had all the toys because. "But not so many for me to think. Wow, this is really a trend. Not just a lot of early adapters that being said Ernst and Young came out and said that EV sales are going to outpace combustion engines within 12 years in Europe, China and the U. S. They're saying By 2045 non electric vehicle sales will be less than 1% of the global car market. Now. I had a guy right me. Over a year ago, Mike Rights and he said, When do you think That half half the trucks will be electric. And I And he then kind of made it a little snide said Oh, so you're clueless. Well, then he waits a year and writes me back. And I still have the same answer. Who knows? It's not a question, making these things and producing them. It's having them come to market where people actually want to buy him. And so far outside of the Tesla Model three. I'm not seeing that level of volume and even its softening a bit. That's neither here nor there. Nobody knows anything on the future, and he wrote me back about. Apparently, I don't read all these papers from all these Wall Street banks and everything else on and so forth. He thought that I knew more about the car business. Apparently, I do. In which case I wrote him a very Lengthy reply. Because in 1998 all the car companies said. We're going to drive hydrogen fuel cell cars. Or has everybody forgotten that General Motors went so far as to say by 2010 100% of their cars would be hydrogen fuel cell cars. That was the deal because I do the automotive news every every day. In the afternoon. I actually pulled my scripts from 1998. How many times do you think I did a story on hydrogen fuel cell cars in 1998? On the news. I did 31 stories that year. With everybody saying it's right around the corner. Well, it's been a generation. There's still not right around the corner now, are they But again, Ernst and Young say this is going to pick up momentum is going to happen, and most of the papers I see on the auto industry written by Wall Street never happen. Never I think they're actually written not to tell us what's coming our way. I think they're written to get money to shuffle around. But their accuracy on predictions Two years out. No less than 10 years out, has just been miserable. In any case, AlixPartners came in and said investments and battery powered automobiles now top $230 billion From the world's automakers, and that I can actually kind of believe that that much money has been spent on research and design, setting up supplier contracts. So on and so forth. I can believe that It has nothing to do with whether you whether you bring the car to market or not, and people buy it. Now. Dr Roosevelt may up at her fines. No sometime last week. Because Hyundai, as they have created the Genesis line for luxury cars, is going to create the Ionic line for electric cars. And I asked Roosevelt, when is this going to happen? And he seems to think it's going to happen maybe before the end of the year. But then my second question have they arranged for you to send mechanics to get training for electric cars? Because to sell electric cars, you have to have a master mechanic for electrics in your store. In fact, you have to have more than one. The more it's group at the Kia stores have now signed up to handle the electric cars, and they're in a holding pattern to on master tax. So between the Huffines group And the more it's group. I count at least five more dealerships in Dallas Fort Worth, They're gonna handle electrics. And I'm going to be honest with you may be the best electric for the money I've driven is the key and narrow. Not the hybrid electric, the full electric It was so efficient if you drove it carefully. Could have made it from here to Houston and one There's no doubt about it. However. In spite of the fact it's great car has good price. Does that mean anybody's gonna buy it? I have no idea. Still don't But everybody is now betting in a decade. We will look at this differently. I'm betting short of a catastrophe. I'm not sure we will. Coming up next. They say they were still fighting over electric push scooters in Dallas, and I think that's probably right. That's next on 5. 70 K L F I'm Dane minor general manager of Freeman to it and Hearst. You were too quick to abandon the we think. Oh, you know, I'm vaccinated. I'm golden and you pretty much are But if you're one of these People. These 1000 people at this point who got who get covid. After vaccination. You can be spreading it to other people and not know you're doing it. So that's the best reason and I think and again if you're two weeks post second vaccine, your risk is quite low. So again, Some of those people catching it haven't been fully vaccinated have had their first vaccine or They're shorter than two weeks. The second vaccine, I think if you're fully vaccinated you two weeks out of your second vaccine, the risk of catching us is probably less than 1%. But it's still one in 100. You know, it's a much higher rate of catching us than winning the lottery. So again, you're walking out in much higher risk catching us than being in an automobile accident. And I think that if you're going to be in high risk setting, even though you've been vaccinated And you're surrounded by people that aren't vaccinated. And we know that 50% of Utahns aren't fully vaccinated. So you're flipping applying every time you walk out again if you're outside you probably safe if you're in a well ventilated space, and you're not spending a lot of time there, you probably saved If you're going to an area that's not well ventilated with a lot of people you're hugging, kissing, laughing close to people where they could be vaporizing on you. "Of these things. Well, when I spoke with you back in March, when this measure was introduced, you said the biggest obstacle for black farmers for generations has been access to credit and the credit you get often takes twice as long. The interest is high. What's your reaction to the stiff resistance from banks on this debt relief? They're essentially saying you paying off your loans will cut into their profits and hurt investors. Right? And you know, this is a banking industry. He was bailed out by the American people. And here they are beaten on black farmers and farmers of color instead of coming out with a long program that would service and help. Black and the other farmers, their color their route, speaking out against the payments, um and worried about what's going into their pockets, but if they open up their bank coffers and lend out more money To blacks and other other small scale bombers. They will continue to make money well, the complaints that come from three banking associations that represent the banks They've gone to so far to say that they'd be less inclined to loan to farmers of color. If the loans were wiped out all at once. They're asking the government to actually pay out more to cover the interest that they lose. But on the subject of being less inclined to lend to farmers of color. This is actually the opposite outcome that you've been fighting for. For the last few decades. That's what I've been trying to do to get the banks to lend us money. And here they are coming out. It's almost in a threatening demeanor towards black farmers. You know, this happens. We're not gonna let you Any more money and those persons are the banks should be held accountable, not only bothered National Black Farmers Association but from the American public on that's and that's what people need to start taking a look at. Why is it always when blacks get a little bit of justice? We get all of this. Resistance on this time from someone. I didn't see it coming the banking industry. There's also something else. Probably what you did see coming in April, Ah Group of white farmers. Actually sued the Department of Agriculture on the grounds that these payments were racist against them. Is this the reaction that you expect it? Well, you know was again It's a continuation of history where blacks would Enslaved on American soul and sharecroppers and survive Jim Crow, and you heard me talk about the length of time I've tried to get debt relief. None of the primary white farm groups signed onto any of the letters, including the banks didn't other. But what about when you got all of the money all of the time? Half trillion dollars since the nineties. 99% of that went to white farmers, and they never saw it as a problem. When blacks didn't get anything when we were representing 14% of the Americas are farmers and that were less than 1% never spoke out against that. John. The reality is is that the farming industry has seen a tremendous shift over the last few decades. You will rely on each other, regardless of race, right? I mean, usually farmers work in larger organizations, and those include both white and black. Do you feel like though these payments drive a wedge in those organizations I believe in and the history here speaks for itself that former President Trump drive the wedge between blacks and white farmers. Administration and Sonny Perdue was the worst agriculture secretary in my tenure towards black farmers when he said You guys had to get big or get out of farming s O. It's gotten worse, and the only way to make it better is to have a real race conversation and the agriculture industry. For blacks and whites, and let's flush this stuff out and have a real conversation. And for the record, I'm not against any farmer getting the help that they really need when Mother Nature and all of these things affect us. But we shouldn't be affected by discrimination in this country. And that's what I'm saying. It's a shows to continuing of how blacks black farmers, another farmers of color have been treated in this country. That was John Boy Junior president of the National Black Farmers Association. We just kind of replicated the contest model Just tweaking at making it a little bit different. I think people are using seeing like really cheesy like follow loops on instagram. Which you know you're getting a bunch of followers aren't really interested in who you are. You made the contest the like to actually listen to the pakistan if you already like it then here's a contest in just to kind of make it fun for parents already listening any wage just to engage a little bit more with your content and also to move them around platforms. Anything that i missed that you want to share one thing we try to do. Is we kind of got in this tip that to show up in. I don't call new and notable or the noteworthy coaching though. Yeah as we are approaching the one hundred mark. We knew months in advance that we were going to get an interview with jill rapley which was huge because she's kind coming on and speaking about the philosophy that she invented and she we really wanted to get on apple's noteworthy and so you can apply to be in early enough which was stupid because we had known so far in advance that we were gonna do this so we think like three weeks before it dropped. We started pushing and it wasn't enough time and we ended up not not getting now. I think that would have been really helpful. But i realized that you kind of do control your own destiny like if you can do podcast. Review pushes reviews help so much. It's not a lot like we might have got like fifty more reviews in eight days but we if you just let them trickle in like people don't leave reviews unless you give them a reason to and that's something that's helped happened so much with gross. Or i follow her on instagram. So a lot of it is word of mouth which is very hard to track. But we know that because we are asking them to leave reviews or they're interacting with us in our contests or You kind of get a feel for it. But from the monetization standpoint. We've been able to drive traffic into options which then leads into the webinar funnel into doing that by just training them to go to the site. The cast show notes page. I'm doing that. About every other episode is is every third or fourth one. Maybe sent them to an opt in and then one of them will send it to a very specific call to action in every single episode. And that's one thing that was hard to do. I like to tell everybody about everything. But it's like what is the call to action is it is it. You're an affiliate code to be honest. The podcast has certainly helped my affiliate business. Because i have the owners an affiliate for eight very very specific brands but you can have roy the founders on and you can have other parents on talking about it and you're sharing your affiliate code. That's also very hard to track. We don't change the code for the podcast but we've seen our affiliate number revenue spike along with spikes in download. So we kind of know that. They're correlated guessing on some of even though we're watching the heck out of the numbers so it's helped with affiliate. It's helped with email list building. Which in turn is helping with bro. The faq episodes we ended we launched with those are really pivotal foundational things. So first of all launch with twenty episodes Having a lot of content. That's evergreen stuff at the beginning. And then you've moved into this flow now where it's like. It's a solo episode in an interview episode right Tell me a little bit about. S- what use we talked a little bit. Offline about it but for you and for people for context it's been less than a year. You're almost half a million downloads now. So you've been absolutely crushing it and that's not like for any credit for that that like you guys and your team's broadcast if you didn't make meet with you every week so it was like the accountability factor to get it done but we kind of we talked with the metrics for like. What should you be aiming for. And how important the numbers. Because i think people do a podcast and they don't know why they don't if it's working but like if you watch your numbers anything it's pretty amazing. Yeah yeah you were just sharing with me like the dashboard. You guys created with some of the some of the insights we talked about early on amazing stuff What has what has been working for you. In terms of growing the podcast. Something i get asked all the time. And i'm like island. I'm only one person. So i left learned from other people that have. We've worked with and see what their iterating because one thing that we struggled with was watching downloads. Go up but not getting ratings and reviews and like ever you listen to podcasts. Sorry oh yeah one of the one of the biggest things the big takeaway i think from working with you was the importance of the launch giveaway contest when re realized people will do anything for content. That helped us grow our list. It helped us with our.
