"Was the day that Manson family member Leslie Van Houten went before the state parole board again a third time. And for a third time. She was recommended found suitable for release again by the California board a parole hearings. The previous two times that he was found suitable for release. It was blocked by then governor Jerry Brown. Who determined that? She was laying too much of the blame on Manson as you'll remember Van Houten took full responsibility for the crime this go round, which according to her lawyer might help her achieve parole. She was not part of the killings that took the life of Sharon Tate and four others. She was responsible for the death of gross early. No, lie Bianca and his wife, Rosemary the following evening. So now her fate is and governor Gavin Newsom hands the recommendation or the finding of being suitable for release by the California board of parole hearings has to with stand a one hundred fifty day review process. If at that point. The suggestion is still to release her. It still has to be approved by governor Gavin Newsom now in attendance yesterday was Sharon Tate. Attending the hearing. And she said that she hoped the governor would deny van Houten's freedom. Just thinking outside the box here. And I'm not saying that this is what I believe. I'm just asking the question should someone who wasn't a part of that incident be allowed to wait in. On her future. In other words. She didn't have anything to do with the tape murder. So why was Sharon Tate there to recommend one way or the other? That would be like if Kerry was charged with isn't Sharon Tate, dead. But Leslie Van Houten wasn't there. Leslie, Van Houten wasn't on trial accused were sentenced because of the depth of Sharon Tate that was the night before. Right. So why would Sharon Tate? I'm just asking the question. It's like of charity murdered somebody. And then you murdered somebody the next night. And then I'm the brother of the person that you Mr. team murdered. And I go to charities hearing and say charity shouldn't be released charity didn't have anything to do with the murder you committed, but I was a part of the same Colt. She was sentenced for. Yeah. I'm just asking the question just something to think about w o a news time seven fifty six. When I had my brother, take me places. It was always like we have to get there early..

"This Leslie Van Houten. We'll have details on that weather a huge national story. Midwest it is freezing. It is below freezing over there. But there's also a series of storms set to move into. So Cal today. So be intimidating this rain get ready for it. The boots. I wore a parka. But that's not waterproof, you need to get something that's going to deflect the rain. And also we've talked about outbreaks of the flu. There's also been a couple of measles outbreaks in our area at five fifty. We're going to talk to someone. I know Jennifer Jones Lee would love she's an award-winning animal advocate. But most importantly, she's the host of the dog bowl this year. The twenty nineteen dog bull not to be confused with the puppy bowl. We'll have more details on that. And it's six oh five. It's handle on the news. You know, Bill Handel is going to watch the puppy bowl for. Sure. Right. All right. I don't know if I'm gonna regret later and right now, let's just say good morning ABC's news and crime terrorism. Analyst is Brad Garret? Good morning, Brad. Good morning. Okay. Now, we're talking about puppy bowls and stuff like that. But, but what your assignment has been is actually a really really scary for those who really don't know who maybe don't have Twitter or anything like that. Can you just give us a summary of what happened to to Jesse small? Jesse? Apparently, we arrived back in Chicago late late at night. So at two o'clock or so in the morning, he's near his residence. He goes into a fast food restaurant. Picks up some food comes out and stated as he was attacked by two guys report a liquid on him place in new surroundings, his neck made some anti gay much and then made some comment to the effect of make America. Great. Something to that effect, and then left after punching him a number of times. So he calls the police say they arrive apparently he had now walked to his apartment they reported. He still has a noose around his neck. So you know, because I've worked so many cases where you have allegations on the front end. Obviously, you believe people to you can prove it otherwise. And so the police for the last several hours and days have tried to corroborate Jesse story. They've found some video of two guys. I think close but walking down the street, I guess they've not been able to find video of the actual attack. But I heard earlier today a gentleman that claimed he was on the phone with Jesse when this happened, and he heard it. So the police are trying to piece together. But you know, obviously, if the is true, it's it's it's beyond troubling. Right. If. It's true. It's pretty pretty scary. Then he this is this is like out of a movie. This is a really really scary thing. He was doing an average person things something we we all go get a bite to eat walk on the street, would you? So I would consider that like last night was a break in the case. They have these two guys on video. Now, they don't think these two guys are they suspects. I think they don't know. You know, the problem is when you have video is that unless you can like capture the people at the scene, you didn't capture people that are in proximity to the scene. I think that's what they have here. Now one advantage is that because it is to two thirty in the morning. There's not the volume of people that would be at two thirty in the afternoon. So you can eliminate I suppose people as you go through this. So the problem with this video, of course, is it it's dark it's the back of two people and it's a long distance away. So you're not gonna be able to ID people from this video. Maybe you know, if you know them really well based on the coat may still the walk. But you know, clearly, it doesn't put the case together yet for the bullies. Right. And this is something that I mean Twitter just went wild with this celebrities everywhere kind of tweeting their support what? So what is the next move in this case? And what what is you say you cover cases like this. What is your analysis on this? Well, I mean, again, I I have no reason to disbelieve him. I'll tell you it does then become a challenge sometimes to prove these crimes once you a dentist by you. You obviously have a really you have this statement, you have a rope. You have March on his face. You have apparently someone who was on the phone with who heard some of this. But you're going to need. I think more evidence to be successful of prosecuting somebody and that becomes a problem. I mean, I've had cases where you know, completely convinced. Looking at the right person or persons, but all the evidence, this really isn't there the police's fault? It's not just he's fault. It's just sort of is what it is. So I am hoping that, you know, this goes together further I will say this that crimes like this people who could these type of hate crimes are gonna have some sort of track record in that arena. Right. But what belong to white supremacist groups, which you know, tend to be homophobic, etc. So, you know, is there something out there is there something in his social media stream because let's face it people with his profile are going to have, you know, a kazillion hits a day of social media. Is there something in those? That's very labor intensive but that may give them a hint as to a direction to go. So this is this case sort of, you know, really cries out to you. The public issue cargo we need your help. Right. Right. And so normally it used. If you had video evidence that was a rare thing now, that's like the evidence. That's what you need to convict someone. And I just want to make note there is a study. There was a study done. We KFI had covered this before hate crimes. There was a spike in Los Angeles from the years of twenty seventeen to twenty eighteen. So it's scary to think that our society. This could just be getting worse. That's really sad. There's a spike in reported crimes, which I will tell you is a big time under reported crime. And that if you look at the southern poverty Law Center, when they look at hate groups, you know, that number now approaches apparently a thousand which you knows? Obviously has stirred number. Yeah. Very disturbing. This whole thing is and, you know, thank you so much for talking to us. This is Brad Garret. He's ABC news crime and terror terrorism analyst, and you can follow him on Twitter at Brad investigates. Brad, thank you so much take care. Okay. So that is a terrifying thing. But you know, this is a danger. I hate I hate that that the the politics go into it. And you see this is a reason to hate someone. You you scream out maga- or whatever. That's that's just ridiculous that makes me so angry because you know, writer left this is a terrible terrible crime. If if it's proven like you said, there's no reason not to believe Jesse. But that video evidence is just so damning, but it is almost necessary in court these days. Well, hey,.

"Leslie van houten youngest of charles manson's motorists followers has been granted her role in california now last year a similar parole board granted her for role but that was overruled by the governor correspondent jim rupe now from los angeles so the question jim is she actually going to get out of jail now well that's up to the governor really uh the governor last year let me manhattan was the very first manson follower involved imitate lobby uncle murders who was ever deemed suitable for parole if out of california parole board describes it however god opener brown last year denied her parole so she had to wait another year here's years or 21st parole board appearance again deemed suitable poor parole so there is a one hundred twenty day a fourmonth review period where the full parole board we'll have to agree and then send that to the governor ben he has thirty days the decide to deny it or allow her out or don't do anything at all which means you get out and he has made no indication either way what he's going to do with based on history it's believed that you'll denied a parole again now leslie van houten knows i remember was not involved in the sharon tate murders but was involved in the locker bianca burgers this is true the so called helterskelter murders happened over two nights august night august at night sixty nine the first night from members of the manson family went to look for some want to murder wound up and roman polanski south rumble after you was mary to sharon tate at the time sharon tate four others were murdered six altogether because guarantee would also pregnant then the second night it was patricia krenwinkle allegedly van houten tex watson in charles manson who wound up at a lobby yonkers home and stabbed both of them death and van houten admitted to stabbing rosemary lobby arkia uh being involved in urban murder and want of life in prison in all of those manson followers believe those murderers or actually going to help society so that was how twisted things were erin jim rupe in la you'll mussameh's or will borders.

"On the news with a chris little wayne resnick and me and leslie van houten has been granted parole for the second time by the parole board the governor house okay and last time out last year the governor said no thank you because the governor does have legal ability to override a parole board recommendation could that's all it is is a recommendation it's going to take him a wild okay it because he's in russia and he's also has one hundred twenty days or whatever a to deal with this i am leslie van houten if that name is not familiar she was one of the manson disciples she wasn't there at the killing of sharon tate she was air the next night at the killing of lino in rosemary labianca she wasn't just there of she gets established rosemary labianca wetting and admitted it all of it that she stabbed her 14times and just horrific so she was given the death penalty with manson and the other people but that was overturned the death penalty was deemed unconstitutional so automatically every buddy was given life imprisonment with the possibility of parole so this is the 21st time cheese up before the parole board and the argument that her attorneys are making and they're pretty solid arguments well i'm going to go into it later on because i yeah we're going to do that at a seven am next on next hour all right because there is a whole backstory including a personal story i was there at the manson trials oh my actually sat in the courtroom in and was thrown out i was what i was kicked out although that'll be a good algeria that story a little bit later on a man who's truck dropped a stolen stove has been convicted of second degree murder man's name is cold wilkinson died this case has been going on for eleven years and has been in custody for eleven years while this happens he back in two thousand six he stole a bunch of kitchen appliances from a home those being built and he put him in his truck and he didn't secure the load now he's driving the stove falls off and.
