Checking in on the broadcast TV upfronts in the age of streaming
"I'm Kim masters. And this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellamy of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt the affronts, or in New York have been going on in New York. This is when advertisers are presented with various networks fall programming. It's, it's such an artifact in a way, you know, I used to go every year, it used to be this huge deal. What are the new shows? What are they going to be? And I'm not the only reporter I've seen on Twitter other reporters who cover TV talking about how now it just feels so so much like the certainly the broadcast networks, fall schedules are, are just this kind of diminished thing, obviously, the ratings have been drifting, drifting downward, there's still a ton of money that changes hands as a result of these presentations. But the nature of the presentations, was really different this year. Yeah. I mean you look at what Disney did they had a two hour presentation. And ABC was the very last almost an afterthought at the end. I mean these have essentially become brand plugs for these various channels network streaming services where everybody comes together in New York. And it's just a show essentially of what these content offerings are. And it's the time where all of these companies are desperately trying to create streaming services that people will pay for subscription based streaming services, and they kind of put that all aside for this week long presentation to add buyers where they say, no, no, no, what we really care about, is this twenty billion dollar ad business that they know is gigantic, but that is not the future of television. Yeah, I mean, the Disney one in particular was apparently so overwhelming. I thought that our colleague, Dan, Steinberg wrote a really hilarious. Article comparing it to a buffet at the golden chorale. Which I've never been to the golden corral for a buffet. But there were such there was so much presentation about ESPN and this and that and Disney. Plus I, you know, I think people felt like this kind of fog in a way coming out of it, because how do you even sort through it? And, and I have to say, I am looking at the cancellation of shows on various networks. I didn't even know where on in the first place. So, yes, the model is definitely changing, but the ad market is still there. It's not all doom and gloom people made a joke. You know, this is networks, circling, the drain, or writing the Titanic or pick your metaphor. But this is still a twenty billion dollar business. It is still the numbers are either flat or slightly going up because in this environment where there is so much brand pollution online with these digital networks YouTube. You don't know if you're at is going to run next to Nazi propaganda or inappropriate content. You have in television, a very safe environment still and people are willing to pay. For that. And increasingly they're paying more for that audience, because you can't find it. Elsewhere, even at diminished levels, there was some other news that came out of this, you know, Disney in the middle of it said, we are basically taking control of Hulu Comcast, eventually selling us their stake. It's a complicated deal. But going forward, Disney is running Hulu and that creates another place where Disney will stream content. And there was also kind of apparently attempts breakfast. You know, CBS has long had this bacon and egg breakfast is always one of the highlights of the up fronts, and Leslie Moonves used to come in chat up the reporters every year in the reporters always liked it because he was very personable and people had no idea of the kind of behavior. He had been alleged to have engaged in this year. Kelly, call took over, you know, he was a longtime person who has set the schedule in his now part of setting the, you know, picking up shows, and, you know, there were questions about bull, which is this show where the star, Michael Weatherly was alleged to have harassed? One of his female, his female co-star allies, a dish coup. She ended up being written out of the show. He asked about that. Kelly, call basically said, we think that Michael Weatherly learned from this experience, and I guess it got kind of tense on. I can understand why, you know, Steven Spielberg's Amblin has dropped it's up. It's piece of the show wants nothing to do with it at this point. You know, and you sort of say, okay, he learned a lesson. But meanwhile, she was still written out of the show and CBS. This comes with the culture at CBS that has seen repeated problems. The message to other stars on CBS if you're abusive all you have to do is apologize. We'll move on. Yeah. That seems a little bit lagging behind where we thought we were with the times up movement. Thank you, Matt, thank you. That's Matt Bellamy editorial director of the Hollywood reporter he joins me this Monday at one thirty on the business. I'm Kim masters. And this is the Hollywood breakdown.
Abigail Disney calls out Disney CEO Robert Iger's astounding pay
"I'm Kim masters, and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Matt Bellany of the Hollywood reporter, and Matt I think some people at the Walt Disney company in the upper echelons or having a breakdown Abigail Disney whose grandfather was Walt Disney's brother ROY has written an editorial following some earlier tweets calling out Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger, four his astounding pay. He made sixty five million dollars in two thousand eighteen she points out that's one thousand four hundred and twenty four times the median pay of Disney worker, not the bottom rung the median pay. And you know, she is making a point that that is a bad, look, right, and immediacy ios have famously been paid much higher than their peers in the last couple of decades for many years, Leslie Moonves at CBS was the highest paid CEO corporate America this year. I'm betting David zaslov at discovery will likely be the highest paid CEO in America despite their stock. Doc, not doing so hot lately, but Disney is different. And it is a public facing company. Unlike any other has a relationship with people who go to the parks who see the movies who have a strong affinity for the brand. So the fact that Bob Eiger is making so much more money than the rank and file at Disney. Does mean something in does resonate. And we're seeing that in the media right now. Yeah, it's a Sarah symbol of income inequality. I'm old enough to remember. When begets father ROY who was waltz nephew led an insurrection against management at Disney and ended up ousting Michael Eisner, and you'd never seen anything like the magic of Disney name in that context. Mom and pop shareholders old people young people came to this shareholder meeting because they were fed up. Roy Disney had made the argument that you know, Michael Eisner had wreck the Disney magic. Now. This kind of a dark twist Disney hasn't really responded to this and Abigail. Disney tweeted yesterday. That she was getting some signals that Disney was looking for dirt on her. And I will note that Disney in the past banned the LA times for a period of time for reporting on its tax arrangements with Anaheim, which was a wild overreaction and would not stand. They came after the Hollywood reporter when we reported on John Lasseter claiming that we had four were forced to publish a correction, which did not happen as we pointed out in our story. This tends to be a little a little reactive in these situations. And they've put out some stats that show that they have raised the minimum wage at the parks, and they're doing things to lift up some of the lower level employees. But the point that Abigail Disney is making is that it's not just idir if the upper echelon executives at Disney were to forego some of their extremely high bonuses they could provide significantly meaningful compensation for the lower level at the company, and they just benefited from this. Massive tax decrease that the Trump administration past and instead of giving employees a one time bonus, which they did they could have raised wages. Yes. And I think they're not the only company in that situation. Thank you, Matt. Thank you, that's felony editorial director of the Hollywood. Reporter. He joins me this Monday at one thirty. "I'm Carl Rochelle Monday today the tenth day of September. Good as always to have long everybody, we begin today with a little corporate compare and contrast the companies in question are apple Volvo, and it's Chinese parent company and the Ford Motor Company, we've only got a half an hour to do the program today. So I'm gonna give you the answer to the obvious question. Which is kinda what are you talking about? Look, here's the thing all three of those companies make things and all three of them directly. Or indirectly have been the target of trade policies threatened by the United States. President Trump said on Twitter this weekend that it'll be too bad. If iphones cost more imposes tariffs on Chinese imports iphones, of course, being made in China, and he's threatened automobile tariffs more times than you can count which gets us to this Volvo, which does make a couple of models in China has cancelled a planned initial public offerings citing those tariff, clouds and Ford, which makes a version of its focus in China reiterated. It's no longer going to export its Chinese-made cars to the United States because. Again tariffs. So as companies make multibillion dollar decisions based on words and threats from Washington now, marketplace's Scott Tong elaborates on the global auto supply chain Ford used to make its focus in Michigan. Now, it's built in China. Where most of the buyers are for its plan was to export a small amount back to the states until the president imposed twenty-five percent tariffs on Chinese-made cars. China auto analyst, Michael Dunn heads the firm's Zo go. Those focus will be subject to duties of twenty five percent, which would make them price. Uncompetitive? So Ford is said, no, let's drop the plans. The president said this weekend that Ford would bring jobs back four countered. Nope. They're staying in China. As are the focuses separately Volvo, its stock IPO cancellation cited tariffs against its cars made in China and elsewhere, the stock prices of many carmakers may fall even more. Syracuse economist Mary lovely here is a question as to whether or not the market has built this in. Prices. And I would argue that they probably haven't she expects more tariffs against Mexico in Europe, followed by counter tariffs. She says a trade war would raise prices so much that some vehicles would have to come off the market fifteen hundred will be the minimum to over four thousand dollars depending on the model. That's a lot of money, and it's clearly going to influence not only which vehicle models people get to see, but the nature of competition. And because the China market is the world's biggest for new cars. She fears new innovative cars there could be walled off from us. In fact, analysts Michael Dunn says the new business model may be to require one plant per car in Europe Asia and North America to evade tariffs. It'd be much more efficient to have one plan and ship product from that plant globally, but that may not go you may have to have a plant in each market. And that means being a lot less efficient costs will go up. He says and so while prices in Washington, I'm Scott Tong for marketplace. CBS? S where until yesterday. Les Moonves was the chairman and CEO says it's taking twenty million dollars for moon viz severance package and donating it to one or more organizations that support the metoo movement and equality for women in the workplace, and while there is no word on which organizations might get that money. Marketplace's Mariel Sagarra does have this look at what might be in store for those that do let's go back four years ago summer two thousand fourteen a challenge was making its way around the internet. You may remember people were dumping buckets of ice water on their heads to raise money for the AL asociation. Bill gates. Did it Mark Zuckerberg and millions of other people the money rolled in a million dollars? Then two and five and then it was ten million dollars a day for several days. And eventually it ended up being one hundred fifteen million Brian Frederick at the last association, certainly was a unique situation, and you know, a blessing, but a challenge the organization was op. Operating on a twenty million dollar budget and didn't have the staff or the structure to immediately deal with that kind of money. A huge donation like the one CBS is doling out can be a game changer for a nonprofit. It's also a big responsibility. Amir Pathak who teaches philanthropy at Indiana University says most nonprofits have tiny budgets and staffs of fewer than five people. It'd be very difficult for an organization like that to figure out how to how to twenty million dollars. It was right down in front of them. You sort of need to have the infrastructure in place before you can receive major good Melanie Yuli at the consulting firm philanthropy expert says nonprofits need finance and compliance committees to monitor the spending of that kind of money. The AL asociation worked with charity watchdogs to get advice on how to spend its ice stuck challenge. "I am joined by my colleague and banter who is in Toronto, Matt Bellamy. Hello, matt. Hello from Canada. So we are doing for the second time in a few weeks. What I would call an emergency Bandra we had previously recorded banter but over the weekend. A gigantic story dropped most people have undoubtedly heard by now that Ronan Farrow struck again in the New Yorker a follow up story to his initial piece on Leslie Moonves has this one filled with incredibly damning detail about attacks that were violent and graphic Biskra of totally unacceptable. Illegal conduct forcing women into sexual acts that they did not want to be involved with and very quickly. The lights went out at CBS for less Moonves, which is something that just a few months ago would have seen absolutely impossible. Right. I mean, this one is different. This is not like the other me two situations because this is the CEO of a fortune five hundred company the first one to be toppled by me too. Type allegations. And he is a legend in the industry. This is someone who has been a CBS for twenty four years before that running Warner Brothers television. He's responsible for some of the biggest hits in the history of Television, New York magazine once called him, Mr. television. So the fact that within the span of two months this person has been erased from the industry, it is a pretty shocking development. Yeah. You know? And this comes as he is locked in this. He had been locked in this fight with Sherry Redstone whose father Sumner had created this empire of CBS and Viacom for a long time less moon vez wanted nothing more than to run both half's of the Redstone empire. But as time went on and the business started to shift so dramatically Viacom became a very troubled company. Also, there was a lot of mismanagement under the leadership so-called leadership of Felipe Domon, Sherry Redstone got rid of Philip Domon a couple of years ago. And then the question was would she merge? Viacom with CBS. And by then ironically, moon, fez, no longer wanted this. He saw Viacom is a big drag on his company, and he fought it. And he fought it eventually in court tooth, and claw. I think that it's really hard for a CEO or chairman of a company to fight off. Somebody who basically owns the controlling interest in that company. But in this case, I think it would have been maybe possible just because of the position you talked about that moonville joined in this industry, and the fact that Viacom was troubled and Sherry Redstone has a obligation to run both with an eye to protecting shareholders, which would make it harder to force CBS Viacom merger over the objections of les Moonves and his board. But as it turns out, this came about as the culture became such that finally these mostly, you know, quite old allegations. But very serious allegations finally emerged and Sherry Redstone was enabled to take over control of both CBS now Viacom. Yeah. And there's been speculation about the timing of all this. You know? Yes. The allegations have coincided with this boardroom battle and some have speculated that perhaps Sherry red zone or her people have been involved in either helping running pharaoh or outright digging up their own dirt on him. I don't know if that's true. I I know that Ronin denies that. And Jerry Redstone denies that. But I know a lot of CBS loyalists do think that there was some involvement from Sherry Redstone camp in this stuff coming out, obviously doesn't make the allegations any less serious than they are. But the future here is becoming a least a little bit clear. Now, I think we will have either a sell off of one or both of these companies whether they're combined or whether they're sold separately. I think most analysts believe that the state of media right now means that CBS would be an attractive entity for a bigger telecom or tech company too. By or a traditional player that might wanna bulk up. And then the Viacom networks in Paramount Pictures also might be attractive to one of these companies trying to get in the content space. Yeah. I mean, it's kind of funny because you know, rich greenfield does an analyst who's pushed for this combination of Viacom and CBS. But, but then you say is that big enough to compete, and even he acknowledges that is not a combination. Even though it's a big company in the world where Disney is buying FOX and AT and T is acquired Time Warner big takes on a whole different. Meaning so yes, the businesses shifted in the future is murky. I think the challenge, you know, many people at CBS are kind of panic stricken at the prospect of Sherry Redstone controlling the company. There are a lot of les Moonves says loyalists there who helped to make this a company that was outstanding in terms of results for many years. And you know, what was one such a point of pride for these people is now it's just been kind of destroyed as far as. The I worked for CBS for less moon. Vaz's is no longer something. You wanna talk about that much at a cocktail party and going forward they're afraid that there's going to be a purge. And I I assume Sherry Redstone who today is you know, observing the Russia. Sean the Jewish new year with her family will make a move very soon to try to at least calm the nerves at CBS. Yeah. I I think that there will absolutely be a either a purge or an exodus or just significant turnover there. The question is will they do with Amazon did when they're content chief ROY price was ousted for harassment allegations in bringing a female CEO, a female content chief to run the operation there. And I think that's probably a big likelihood. Yeah. I mean, it's a sad commentary that I can't think off the top of my head of that many candidates who could be at that level. But we'll see if they manage to do it. Thank you, Matt. Thank you. That's not felony editorial.
