John Fetterman Uses Closed Captioning Technology in Debate
"Breaking news, Jon fetterman says that he is going to use a closed captioning device and tomorrow's debate against Doctor Oz. I really hope Doctor Oz goes after fetterman. Here's what Oz has to say in the debate. Mister fetterman, I'm a doctor. And I've saved people's lives. And I took an oath, Hippocratic oath to protect and preserve all human life. All human life matters to me. And I have compassion for you and I care for you, but if I was your doctor, I would not let you serve in the United States Senate, let alone go and run for office. And not only are you not healthy, not only are you to have the mental capacity of senator, your views are insane. You want to let one third of people out of prison, you want to legalize all drugs and also you're a spoiled rich kid who has never worked an honest day in your life who poses as some sort of tough guy with tattoos and a sweatshirt wearing shorts all the time. You've tried to appropriate the culture of middle Pennsylvania when in reality you are no different than a Shrek lookalike Leonardo DiCaprio moral equivalent of play acting a Pennsylvania steel worker, not actually ever doing something with your hands in your life. You're not a member of the muscular class. You're an entitled brat who has been subsidized by your parents to your mid 40s who doesn't actually have the mental acuity to be a U.S. senator.
Leonardo DiCaprio Breaks up With 'Old' Camilla Morrone
"Leo DiCaprio is split with his girlfriend and four years Camilla Moroni. Does anybody even know what this chick looks like? I mean, let's be honest. We've all heard her name, all right? We'd probably saw a few pictures of her. I'm not going to sit here and say I can tell you, I don't think I could even recognize her in a police lineup. I really don't. I think she's cute. I think she's got a good body. I know she's young, but she's not like a girl that was paraded around when he was younger and dating, you know, Gisele Bündchen and bar Rafael. So I don't really know Camilla and Al Pacino and her mother. He was with her for four years and now they're done and he broke up with her because you know what? She turned 25 years old. That's the thing guys, that's what you have to know. Leonardo DiCaprio breaks up with girls. What is he 47? I think he's in his late 40s. He doesn't like anybody over 25. He just doesn't. I think he thinks 25 is ancient. And by the way, what is her job? What is she doing again? Does anybody know what she does? How does she make money? I don't think anybody knows. I don't.
Kodak Black and 3 Others Shot at Los Angeles Super Bowl Party
"Think today's show can be called maniacal Monday. Today's from an ankle Monday. There were things there were some excessive enthusiasm going on, some examples of excessive enthusiasm. Things that happened to the point of insanity, leading up to the Super Bowl, including a shootout in the Beverly grove section of Los Angeles Kodak black. I couldn't tell you one of his songs, I'm sure if I heard that I'd say, oh, I know this song. Don't know the guy, but I know him, but a bunch of rappers named will were shot, no one died, but, you know, they drew guns at a nightclub where Leonardo DiCaprio was and a bunch of famous people are strolling it out. It's Super Bowl weekend in LA boy. I mean, you talk about possible gang violence between the crypts and the Bloods. You talk about all the nightclubs and restaurants and let's not forget the prostitutes. Oh boy, the escorts and prostitutes this weekend in LA just past weekend made out like bandits.
Bill Gates Needs Jesus Christ
"I think it would make him more at peace with his, with his issues. He's got serious issues. Any Republican that associates with Bill Gates, you got serious problems. Okay, cut 26 Bill Gates wishes happy lunar year to China and embraces the Tiger symbol for vitality and health. This is unbelievable. This clip is so incredible. Bill Gates, he is, he's part of there's an archetype that all these people fill, right? And Bill Gates definitely fills the master of the universe type archetype. Now, I am not a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio's new movie on Netflix. Don't look up. Have you saw this Conor? But I will say that there is one actor, and there is one role in that movie. That screams Bill Gates. It's the billionaire adviser to the president who kind of has this beta male like fake way of kind of showing strength. Here's Bill Gates complimenting China. Play cut 26. I want to wish everyone in China, a very happy lunar new year. Just as the Tiger symbolizes vitality and health, our foundation has continued to work over this past year. The reason troubling and highly contagious on the variant means the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet over. Since the onset of the pandemic, China has worked hard to not only contain the virus, but also contributed to closing the equity gap by supporting other countries with many different supplies, including great vaccines. That is unadulterated propaganda. I'm not going to make a
Governor Glenn Youngkin Signs 11 Day One Executive Actions in Virginia
"I've been in kind of a wait and see approach to kind of see what is young and going to do when he actually takes office. Well, on Saturday, Glenn youngkin was sworn in as governor of Virginia. Immediately, Glenn youngkin went to signing executive orders, aimed at keeping key campaign pledges on reading from Charlie Kirk dot com. To push back on highly divisive critical race theory and to investigate loudon county public school members and officials. Glenn youngkin within minutes of becoming governor, he decided to do what so Republicans hesitate to do. Which is to fulfill on your campaign promises. Number one, Glenn youngkin has banned all uses of critical race theory and public education in Virginia. To restore excellence in education Glenn youngkin, signs an executive order ending the use of divisive concepts, including critical race theory and public education. Number two Glenn youngkin is said to empower Virginia parents against this kind of theme of the parents party. In their kids education, it is now the rule in Virginia to allow parents to make decisions on whether their kids should wear a mask in schools. Mask mandates for children are dead in Virginia. To restore confidence and integrity in the parole, board of the Virginia comment on the come of Virginia, not exactly sure who that one is relevant to the theme we're talking about, but it sounds interesting. The next one to investigate wrongdoing in loudon county. Remember the covering up of the father who came and complained about his daughter that was raped, the 14 year old daughter, and then they reassigned the male student who raped again. Glenn youngkin is wasting no time. He is doing a full investigation into that. Now, maybe someone could explain to me why Glenn youngkin decided to dress like Leonardo DiCaprio from Django Unchained. I don't quite understand the wardrobe selection. I don't have Twitter any of that. Maybe the Internet has already figured that out, but it's a spitting image, almost identical. Next Glenn youngkin is saying Virginia's open for business, no more lockdowns, and now than a couple to prevent human trafficking and support provide support for survivors. And then finally, there is a commission to combat anti semitism and then finally, to withdraw from regional greenhouse gas

"And it's also I noticed really how you've cut this movie feels different than how your other movies are cut. I know you've worked with Hank corwin for a long time and he's a master of a certain kind of a style. But even when you've cut the performances and the number of angles that you're shooting, your actors from, was there something different that you were trying to accomplish here with that sort of structure of the movie? From the beginning, I talked to Lina sandrin or director of photography about the fact that I wanted this one to be a little more traditional looking. A little more framed a little less handheld, I felt like we needed an artful colorful energy to it. I mean, you can't help but look at all those legendary movies from the 60s and 70s network and doctor strangelove ace in the hole was a big one even though it's black and white the way it was framed I really looked at. So there was a difference and then this movie is much more of a comedy than the last two, certainly the advice and big short definitely had plenty of comedic elements to it, but still this was this involved some cut patterns that were a little more traditional comedy. So Hank and I kind of would go back and forth with that. And I would say, Hank, I think this is a time you go with the comedy cut pattern. And then there were other times he would purposely break that pattern and I like that blend. It kept me off balance. I mean, the one move he does that I just love is he'll just cut off in the middle of a line. And just sort of say to the audience, you know where this was going, let's move on. And it's interesting because my daughter's pointed out, that's something people do on TikTok. That's actually a style that's sort of new on TikTok. And so the combination of sort of Hank corinne's incredibly original style with my experience with comedy, I think is what gives you that that rhythm and then of course the look as well. I'm going to ask you a slightly head of your question. But based on some of our conversations, I feel like I have a good sense of your view of the world in addition to how you speak publicly on certain issues. You're very direct in your beliefs. And yet, you and I both are tools of this massive media and entertainment system. We benefit from them in a lot of ways. And I'm curious how you sort of reconcile that with the fact that you clearly seem to be so so impassioned about the ideas to the point where it is completely infiltrated your art at this point in your life. And yet you've made a big movie with Netflix. You know, like there is some dissonance there. Do you not see it that way? You know, I look at it the other way. I look at it that it's incredible. I got to make this movie with Netflix. I look at it like this is it's a win. To be able to use these tools to get a movie like this out there or I find to be really exciting and I give Netflix credit..

"I had never done a movie with Netflix and the one guarantee I wanted was that they would put the movie in a significant amount of theaters because I really believe in the theatrical experience and they were great about that. They said, yes, but what turned out to be the lucky part was when COVID hit Netflix the way they're designed as a company they had the cash on hand to pay for extensive safety provisions for the movie that I think some maybe some other studios couldn't have done. I remember when we spoke in April you mentioned that you had were coming out of a COVID production and just how challenging it was. I feel like even more challenging because this is a big film and has really not just big movie stars, but arguably the biggest movie stars. I mean, your cast is kind of as gold plated as it comes. Did that make it that much more expensive that much more difficult to execute? It created situations where people are flying in from different parts of the country, they're having a quarantine for 8 days, they have people that are with them, they have a girlfriend, they have their makeup person, by the way, actually not flying in, driving in. God bless them. And so they had people with them. We had to figure that out, our producer, Kevin massac, Jeff waxman, Jen made aloft, not only had to produce this big movie, but really had like full-time jobs dealing with COVID. And the breakthrough moment was when we got the PCR instant tests. Up until that point, I kept saying we're going to shut down at some point. You can't do this every week. Like, we'll be as safe as we can. But when we got the instant test and we were doing them every single day, I remember saying, oh, I think we're going to pull this off. And sure enough, we never had one single positive in the red zone. It was incredible. And actually, no positives in any of the zones because they were all caught by the gateway testing. But that's also a testament to the crew that really rallied and with the extra mile. You had a lot of people that were very happy to be working because remember this is after 5, 6 months of inactivity so that teamsters in Boston really rallied around each of the departments, the COVID PAs. Everyone kind of stepped up the extra notch and the actors were great about it. There was no there was no diva behavior whatsoever. Everyone got what was going on and felt very relieved to be there. Leonardo DiCaprio is the star of this movie. He's quite a big deal. He's amazing in this movie, kind of as usual, but a little bit different but still this person that we like to watch. I know that he's a very collaborative movie star. And I'm kind of wondering what your relationship with him was like and how you guys developed the movie together..

"Let's just talk about Leo. So Leo is playing, I would say somewhat against type here. He's playing this astronomer, a scientist, a very kind of sweaty and anxious person, not the typical leading man kind of a part that we expect from Leo, though, I think if you look at his career, he tries to Burt that more often than not. What do you think of Leo's performance here? It's not a traditional leading man, but you could also feel the Leo peeking through a couple times. I don't want to spoil what happens to that character, but until things shit, how can I say this? He gets to enjoy some of the spoils of being the center of a movie's character does. If that makes any sense. And he certainly gets his network moment. And I would say that that's played for earnestness. And it didn't remind me a little bit of, you know, we talked about late stage Tom Cruise, how they're always has to be a speech about how Ethan hunts really great. And all the movies do it some way have to justify Tom Cruise taking this role because that is just a great guy. And it does kind of work out that way for Leo and I was like, okay, good. Leo still is there in the contract and the script stage being like, this is how I agree to be portrayed. And this is how I do not agree to be portrayed on screen. And I just think it's nice that somebody still has that kind of leeway. Yeah, it's funny to compare him to the icons of his time. Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise Will Smith, Denzel Washington. Very rarely are the most evil or duplicitous or even just kind of downbeat person on screen. They have they often follow the hero archetype mold. The classical movie star approach, the same way that Bert Lancaster would have put himself at the center of the frame or Tyrone Power, someone like that back in the 40s, 50, 60s would have you. And that's pretty radically different from the way I think some other stars do things, and we're in this moment now where taking on a slightly more complicated vision of heroism I think is a little bit more a little bit more accepted and he seems to be working in a kind of an old school star system. I kind of compare and contrast them a little bit to mat Damon too. You know who has played a couple of pretty complicated parts in no sudden move, and also in, of course, I'm still water this year. 6 months later, spoiler for no set in move. Oh, well, I'm sorry. Check out no sudden move. You haven't seen it. And then the last duel two, all three of those movies. Matt even plays kind of a shithead. Kind of a bad guy. Certainly not the hero of those stories. And so Leo is holding onto something a little bit more classical, which makes him interesting. He hasn't always been that person but for the most part he has. And so it.

"I'm Amanda Robbins. And this is the big picture, a conversation show about Leo by a couple of leos. Today we're talking about don't look up a new satire from Adam McKay and Netflix with one of the most loaded casts in recent movie history. That includes Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, rob Morgan, Cate Blanchett, Timothée Chalamet, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry, Ariana Grande, Mark rylance, and as an astronomer working frantically to inform the world about an impending extinction level event, it's a Leonardo DiCaprio. Later in this episode, I'll have a conversation with McKay about don't look up and a bit about winning time. It's forthcoming HBO series about the 80s showtime Los Angeles Lakers. This one was recorded before Adam was profiled by Vanity Fair and a few other outlets, so there are no comments about a split with Will Ferrell just keep that in mind. But first, Amanda, let's talk about don't look up just a little bit and more about Leo. So don't look up is in movie theaters right now about 500 theaters in America. It's hitting Netflix on December 24th, I suspect this is going to be a very big movie for folks staying at home over the holidays. We will do our best not to spoil it, but I think we should talk about it because it's been a subject of much debate in the critical community and I'm curious what you thought of it. Okay, so we're not gonna spoil it, but also you want me to render a verdict on it two weeks before people can see it. I'm really frustrated with every aspect of this. Let people see movies to the movie industry at large, just like let people see movies. Let me see the movies. Let me be honest, everybody. It was not easy for me to see this movie. It's not easy for me to see a lot of movies, but you know everyone just tearing their hair out about west side. Just like show people movies where they are. For the love of God, okay? And I'm mad at us a little bit because we have seen this movie and we're trying to make a good movie podcast for you guys and it is quote in the discourse, but also no one's gonna be able to see this until Christmas. If you're mad, I'm mad too. Anyway, I would like to answer your question in a form of question. Okay. What was the last satire you saw that really, really worked? It's a very tough one. Maybe Mike judges idiocracy? Right. That might be the last one, which is what is that 13, 14 years ago?.

So they're trying to pass something or or what off the top of my head and mcdon- i don't remember the democrats. Don't wanna pass it. So they are flying out of the state because then it triggers a forum where it can't get passed without them their strategy going. If they're in the state they can be hauled in forced to come in but if they leave the state. They think they're exempt from doing this so it's not clever. Yeah but they can't have a quorum vote unless there are a certain number of people present to vote so they scrammed so there must be voting on the didn't like they were voting on a requirement. That you show voter. Id okay which most people in both parties actually favor will. You can't favor that i've absolutely favorite. How's that possible. You're crying your eyes out about having to show an idea to buy ammo that lots of a right. That's my point if you have to show no no. You're crying your eyes out about having a which. I don't even understand the other day you were saying i've basically had my constitution pooped upon because i have to show my. Id to buy and you can still buy it. They didn't stop you from that. But just showing your. Id was what your objection was. So why would you insist on showing your id for other things. Because if i don't have to show it to vote. I shouldn't have to show it to buy ammo. That you just say you want people to show their. Id which does not make sense with your insisting on not showing your id because it steals your constitutional rights. I'm pointing out the double standard. Don't try to retroactively. Reverse logic yourself asshole state. Wait wait wait. You're not gonna get off track on this. You cried about having to show your id to buy amel and now you're insisting on showing your id to vote because it's a double standard. Yeah you're the double standard not. You are hundred percent the double standard. Because if they took away the idea for ammo. You'd be thrilled. Because because i what else are we talking about. What else are we doing he really. He says he's going to arrest these people. He's not going to arrest. He can if they stay in the.

One involved in old online platform called. Compuserve compuserve combines the power of your computer with the convenience of your telephone to bring you hundreds of online services like a complete set of encyclopedias for those of you who don't remember the nineteen nineties. Compuserve was one of the earliest internet service providers. It also hosted several online forms as well as the third party. Newsletter called rumor ville so in nineteen ninety. Rumor ville published some disparaging remarks about arrival newsletter. And this is perfect called scuttle but which was owned by cubby inc. In addition to suing rumor ville cubby also sued compuserve alleging that as publisher compuserve was also liable for the statements of its authors and the court in the compuserve case called covey versus compuserve. Said that a third party post on compuserve did not make copies reliable So in other words because compuserve didn't moderate content on its platform it could not be sued for libel that is since compuserve was merely a distributor of defamatory statements. "I couldn't tell you who didn't have a minute. And I consider myself a movie file and I try to pass that on to my kids and my poor 18 year old son Sattar over three hours of that with me. And he brings it up all the time. Like I'm never going to get those three hours back. The only thing that I can say is that it has Tom Hanks in it. Okay? And I hate the bad mouth, Tom Hanks because I've never seen any other movie. Really? That I can say that he was bad in But he played six different roles. And this movie one of those movies like Eddie Murphy does with the clumps. Replace every role. Yeah, and they jump around from like Different times or are different rounds. He's talking about Basically like how the government does like cruel and unusual punishment, Um, also how, like society, spoiling Children and letting them run amok. A lot of people have a problem with it because it has some graphic violence scenes early on in the movie, and I could see where that would leave a bad taste in your mouth where you're like what I don't know what I'm watching, so a lot of people don't really get through it long enough to get to the point. But I will admit that was one. It took me a couple times the watch to really get it. Got you. Amen. Brother. Well, thanks, Ruan. I mean, Ryan for your explanation. What? Good work. ON The Frontlines Of The Youth Climate Strikes
"This week we go to the frontlines of the youth climate strike movement. There are hundreds of protests going on all around the world today as young people, school children from Australia to Iceland come together to protest about what they're calling the crisis of their lifetime climate change. Of course, what they see is politicians inability or unwillingness to do anything about it to the global protests that is underway right now, students and workers all around the world of flooding the streets demanding action on climate change, Maggie, Rulli that a demonstration in London with the latest Michael with thousands of protesters, right underneath parliament, and what's so striking besides just the sheer size of protesters here are. The age of people who are demonstrating almost all of them are students that's hiding just nine years old. We spoke to a group of seventeen year olds who said they're here today to fight for their future. Now, the goal of this strike, really all these strikes around the world it's a send a clear message to world leaders ahead of the UN climate summit happening this week in New York climate change protests happening right now in lower Manhattan this is video from chopper four showing the massive crowd marching from Foley Square the courthouses down to the battery among the people flooding city streets were students who were allowed to skip class today to join this 'cause. I told with Jerome Foster. who had seven sounded watching documentaries about our planet go activated and started climate blogging creating virtual reality platforms social justice. He's now eighteen has been climate striking for eighty one weeks in front of the white. House. He founded one million of us to get youth to vote this November Jerome is one of eleven million people from over one hundred and forty countries the climate striking and skipping school to tell us we need to act now. I stopped by asking Jerome where he is now. I'm visiting New York City I just moved here for college, but I was born and raised in Washington DC. I'm going to college at Peace University and Columbia Columbia basically majoring in computer science specializing artificial intelligence. are distance-learning others are like mixed waken coming class in? Their dorm near the off his classes, some of them, most of my classes right now are digital. Have One. Now. So tell me about growing up in DC and kind of what led you to get into the place where you founded the organization one, million US. So where I grew up in Washington DC right around like places. And forests and those like a huge place for me to explore my neighborhood. So I kinda grew up getting in touch with nature and after years of like understanding what nature wasn't had really appreciate it. I started watching documented by astrophysics and learning about like what are world's about like what a black holes water were imposed all these cool late science things, and after that, I started watching documentaries about my own planet and how our planet fit into. Astrophysics. into the rest of the world that every time they talk about something else beautiful it's like but humans are burning it down and but. Are Continuing to extract coal and an oil and natural gas to power earth than is going to continue to see species go extinct and like that was kind of a wake up call for me understanding that our earth is actually has like trouble going on but still being like six or seven years old was like. This isn't that big of an issue. Adults are GonNa fix this adults definitely going to step up and take action but Learning later on like it didn't happen. That's that's not the story as the navy faded it. kind of grew into another understanding that like if the corruption is the unwillingness to have moral clarity won't stand up to corporations and that they don't have the political leadership to acting say, we need to hold you accountable and like as older I was like, how can I get into? Really. Getting their attention actually taking action when my friends kind of toby lunch table they're like, Hey, you should start into pitch. Okay. Cool. So like for sixth seventh and Eighth Grade I posted every single day. and. Like facts and got to like and I was like I got to convince that climate change because back then like global warming is a hoax and everyone believed that that was the big struggle and like today it's not that same conversation. It's about how do we take action but back then it was all about is it real? And I did that for six eighth grade in ninth grade I trying to transition. To. More technology and building I reality environments. So I mean when you say like it's ten years, it has been view like if he started when you seven that. Yeah. I started virtuality company called Vr, and basically it was the idea that like we can use virtuality. Gaming Place, but actually civic engagement accident building empathy only a few people will be able to see it because it's so expensive to create and it's so hard. Tribute it out. So I, kind of transition into. into journalism and it was because I started watching my documentaries again. It was Leonardo DiCaprio's before the flood and like in the last five minutes he said we need commentators then covered as if it's a lot we need young people we need people to come out here and start talking about time change in a new way. So I was like I can do that. There's like I'm I'm I'm with around blood so like two hours. Later I I email my English teacher in accurate a blog called the climb reporter and one hundred, sixty, five articles like eight months and determine about climate change from east perspective sounds like we need young people in this movement because our future is directly at stake people will say their children's children but we're the Stojan. At this point we waited fifty years to take action. Our Future. Now,

Hollywood's Black List

It's two thousand and five Franklin Leonard a junior executive at Leonardo. DiCaprio's production company which sounds glamorous, but arguably he is a glorified script reader. WHO's boss's boss? Is Leonardo DiCaprio. Franklin's job is to help that boss. Find The next great movie for Leo, which means he is constantly reading movie scripts. Every junior executive lives in constant fear of the trade story that breaks about some exciting new script that they didn't know about that. Their bosses like. Like why didn't you know about this? Franklin is supposed to know about everything which is tough because there's this famous old saying in Hollywood. Nobody knows anything as in. It's really hard to know what movies are going to work. So if you do find something any piece of information that can help you gauge. What might work that information? Franklin is learning. That is Hollywood gold one of the things that drilled into your head. Is that information? Information is the most valuable thing. Yeah, and that information is to be protected and kept in house and exploitation of that information is how we in power and leverage like what little information you can manage, and then if it's kind of good, put up a wall as quickly as possible. That's exactly right. Movie scripts are a kind of information like the fundamental piece of information for a movie, and so Franklin's job is go out into the world. World and find undiscovered scripts before anybody else finding those scripts, though amongst the thousands and thousands being written every year it's a bit like walking into like the largest bookstore in the world, and every book has the exact same color. There's no cover art. There's no like publishers weekly. There's no reviews available to you, but your job is to walk into that sort of hyper anonymous bookstore and come out with the best books available That seems impossible. And Franklin says you can see how a problem emerges quickly in Hollywood people deal with this overwhelming amount of information by assuming they should reach for the same shelves of that anonymous bookstores they always do. They assume they should make the same kinds of movies written by the same kinds of people starring the same kinds of people. Yes, we are generally talking about white men people you soon because this has been the case for you thus far that are white writer who went to Dartmouth is better than a black writer who went to? To Clark Atlanta or Spelman, the conventional wisdom that you assume as wisdom is more often than not convention, and that is especially true in Hollywood where the convention has been created by people who are in no way, shape or form representative of the audience and consumer that they are trying to sell to Franklin. decided it was going to be part of his job. Try and find scripts outside of the conventions, well of course, also keeping an eye open for the next conventional blockbuster, which yeah was gonNA mean lots more reading the normal. Look. I've always been bit of a grind. My Competitive Advantage was my capacity to work, and so every weekend I would take home a banker's box full of scripts, but literally twenty five thirty screenplays, and try to read them all every Saturday afternoon. There is Franklin sitting on his couch. It is black sweatpants flipping through page after page after page hoping he's about to read a life changing story imagine if Christmas was every Saturday, but every Saturday. You ran downstairs and opened the box that you're most excited about, and it was socks. Because there is the possibility of getting everything that you ever wanted yeah. But there is the probability that it's. Socks most Saturdays and Sundays go like this Franklin tears into his Christmas scripts seven hours later. Frankland sitting in a pile of socks and the worst thing is when he goes into the office on Monday. His boss says you read anything good. And Franklin has to say no. It was as if he didn't do any work that weekend. Because most scripts are so bad, the Franklin would be in trouble for recommending them, and even if he is lucky enough to find a scripted, he loves he's really got to think about whether. Whether it is the right kind of thing for Leo's company like there was a script going around that year about a guy dealing with his interpersonal trauma by buying and dating a sex doll. It's easy to imagine reading that in saying Oh this is a really well observed human story, but imagine going into your boss's office and saying you should read this and when they ask you what it's about saying. This is what it's about Leonardo DiCaprio. I think you should play this role where you date of a doll like that's. That's a tough sell for the most confident among us. Franklin's breaking point came late one night. Do you remember his? He was in the office. It was dark outside, and he was supposed to go on vacation, and he just kept thinking about how he was inevitably going to end up drowning in bad scripts on vacation, and all of that work would generate nothing of actual value for his job and I remember, looking up and thinking. I. Don't know that this is sustainable and I need to come up with a solution. How is there not a better system for finding good screenplays? If you do the Friends of friends method, you end up with the Friends of friends scripts, and if you try this brute force thing, you're going to ruin your weekends, Andrew Vacation, plus you would need fifty more Franklin's to see all of the script anyway. And that's when it dawns on Franklin. There are more than fifty Franklin's in Hollywood got on. My desktop fired up my calendar and went through and looked at every single person who had a job similar to mine. Who I had had breakfast lunch, dinner or drinks with. If you had eavesdropped on those breakfasts and drinks, Franklin says you would have heard the junior executives ask each other this same question. Have you read anything good lately? Yes, these junior. Our competitors and yes, information is power and companies would probably not be jazzed about them sharing that information, but you know these are low level producers. They're doing each other favors, and it's all off the record anyway. Who is going to know about this and so Franklin figures? Let's see if anyone's read anything good lately. He opens up an email and he BBC's about seventy. Five of his fellow junior exacts, and so know hey. Similar of your ten favorite scripts in exchange I will send you the combined. Responses back. Did you say who you were like? I am a I am a mysterious junior executive. Say anything else, I do not believe that I did. I created an anonymous hotmail address. I believe it was blacklist. Two thousand five at Hotmail DOT com, he called it the blacklist partly to honor the blacklisted writers during the McCarthy era, and partly because he always hated the idea that the word black gets used to mean bad, so this blacklist was going to mean great screenplays. People would respond, but surprisingly responses started coming back. Maybe these other junior executives felt as stuck as Franklin. Maybe it was just this information bargain was was a good deal. I sure transcripts I get a whole list back there around ninety responses and every time somebody mentioned the same script Franklin treated that like a vote for that script, and he starts logging all of this into spreadsheet. Twenty five people voted for things. We lost in the fire by Allan Loeb Twenty. Four people mentioned Juno by cody. Fifteen votes Larson the real girl by Nancy Oliver Fourteen votes, Lars and the real girl that is the script about the guy and the sex. If, you were a junior executive. Thinking this is good, but is this good? I'm not important enough to risk bringing this to my boss. The blacklist was a way of saying you were right. It was good and here is a number. Instead of just your instincts fourteen votes, only living boy in New, York, by Allan, Loeb Charlie Wilson's war by earned Sorkin, Fan Burke and by the way a big deal in two thousand five. This wasn't just about finding undiscovered writers. It was any script that was great and not made. In a script called peacock by riders named Michael Lender and Ryan Roy the top ten of the very first blacklist thubten of the very first blacklist. Point the blacklist was just a spreadsheet that only Franklin could see, and he's about to send it back to all those other junior executives who contributed and he looks at it for a moment all of this normally off the record insider Hollywood Intel now written in a single place. He takes a deep breath. And he hit send. And then he packs up and heads off for vacation in Mexico and about a weekend vacation I went to the hotel of business center to check my email on like the public computer. And this lists have been forwarded back to me several dozen times. and everyone's like Oh my word of this team. Come from a lot of descriptions of sister. Good. Where where did this come from? What's your? What's your thought? It was terrifying. My thought is is that my career in Hollywood has a clock on it and the doomsday clock has just sped up. This anonymous list of the best unmade screenplays was blowing up. It had gone way beyond the small circle. It was initially sent to it even ended up covered the industry press, and so Franklin kept his down. He stayed anonymous and one day. He gets this call from an agent. Saying that his client has written this amazing script. It's perfect for Leo. It's like the usual call, except then the agent says hey. Don't tell anybody, but I have it on good authority that this ripped is going to be the number one script on next year's blacklist. I immediately thought to myself. That's interesting because I made the blacklist and I'm not making another one because I. DON'T WANNA get run out of town on rails. But I'm fascinated that you think that the speculative notion of your client scripting on the list is a sales tool for you. That must mean that this list that I created has

Apple and Paramount to make a deal for Martin Scorseses next movie
"I'm Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown joining me as Melanie and Matt. The streaming wars as you know as many people who are listeners know are underway. Hbo Max Coming out onto the field of play this week. A lot of people finding it a little including me a little tricky to figure out how to get that even though as a spectrum customer I should be able to access it but it doesn't show up on my TV. Because I have Roku so it's some people can't find it. Some people like it but we are seeing apple seeming to up its game with some big high profile deals. They are spending money. It's a little reminiscent in some ways of the Netflix strategy. Where we seen them angling for high profile expensive awards movies awards prestige movies apple is now throwing. Its hat into that ring. You know backed by the might the economic might that wealth of Apple. Yeah and this is a big project. Martin Scorsese Film. Sources are saying it's between one seventy five two hundred million dollars depending on who you believe probably will go much higher than that given scores as he's track record. It's got Leonardo DiCaprio. It's called killers of the flower moon. And this is a really really interesting play for Apple. Because you saw Netflix's get a lot of attention for the Irishman last year. Whether it was good or bad you can debate that. But it got them into the Oscar conversation in a meaningful way. They didn't walk away with best picture but they were in the game and apple will likely be in the awards game when this movie eventually comes out. What's interesting here? Is the deal structure. You've done some reporting on that because it was originally paramount. Paramount got cold feet and it ended up at apple after a bidding war. After you know it was shopped around town and this is essentially. What I think is going to happen with a lot of movies. Going forward where they get developed at the studios than the price inches up inches up inches up studios where once upon a time they might have taken a risk on a big movie from a big director are now going to get cold. Feet and income streamers just clarify something about that. Paramount is not out of this game. Scorsese has his deal there and they did release them to shop this around but they own the property the underlying novel and this is a very dark period piece set in Oklahoma in the nineteen twenties. Leo DiCaprio originally was supposed to play a good guy. Paramount was really interested in that version. Then he changed it so that he was playing a kind of a villain character and I am told that paramount felt this is now a less commercial movie with the same budget which point they did say go ahead and shop at around and there was a really long pause and apple did step up but it is still a question of a deal with paramount because it is expected that paramount will at least get some sort of a percentage at pop probably released the film in theaters. Which is what. Scorsese did not get with the Irishman with net flicks so having explained all that. Let me say I would pay money? Actually to see tensor Endo's at Netflix's sit down and explain to me. The cost benefit analysis of having spent which I think was certainly over two hundred billion dollars on the Irishman.
