"Who fight this Leonard Skinner are right. So you know how smell we really don't didn't talk about it too much before Cove it right all the sudden took it for granted. We took it for granted. Everybody's lost their sense of smell and 2018. I guess there was a survey out that asked people which sense they would miss the most if they lost it, and sort of like foreshadowing What? Well, yeah, and smell came in last only 2% of residents actually picked smells, so there's number one I don't know. They never said site for sure. Yeah, site. Yeah, but now smell is a big deal because we missed all those wonderful smells flowers, gas like, yes, I like the smell of gasoline really do nail polish that kind of stuff anyway, So here's some little tidbits about smell. Oh, that was a big one big break in the action Smell loss could also be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease. I have very, very bad sense of smell. Oh, well, Steve, I hate to tell you I do. It's true. Smell. Dysfunction is also a common early symptom for Parkinson's disease. Yeah, so all right, That's um that's um gloom and doom. Did you know that our sense of smell naturally declines us. We ages? Well, speaking of that, so a third of people in their eighties can't smell at all. So imagine that that's why maybe when we get older, we just kind of eat anything. Now smell bad. Keep talking, E. I remember my grandpa used to put carrot he managed that explained the Jell O. I don't know he'd mash like, uh, candy corn and mashed potatoes and just eat it. That sounds good. My gross What? Some Lima beans there. You got? Suck attacked, You know, maybe now he just couldn't spell it. That's what I'm thinking. So anyway, pregnant women have especially sensitive noses. We know that's true. I've always known this. I could smell anything when I was pregnant. It always would make me puke. The first time we were in Ireland share tonight She was pregnant with Emma on. We're in a supermarket. And she grabs an apple from the produce area and walks around the whole store with the apple in her nose, because the smell of everything else made her sick. Why still looked a little strange, Well, big hearing that didn't look strange until we put the Apple back. And then that's when we got the looks. All right. They're ready for a few more Sure. So women have keener. Speaking of women have keener knows Is that men? Sure. Because they have is money is 50% more cells in that part of the brain. We have more cells in our brain. Could you imagine? This is where in the eighties I would have made a nosy joke. But we're not gonna do that. I thought I lost them all. When I had my kids. I kept thinking I've lost all my brain cells, but apparently I can smell still pretty good. Nice one more. Okay, One more. The future of the future of smells. So companies in France and Canada are developing devices that mimic our sense of smell, And they can actually be built into home appliances to create like ovens that you can shut themselves off when they detect when they smell it burning Wow! And refrigerators that can tell when some of your food is rotting. I like so that's kind of cool. Digest this from Mary Vandevelde. How spectacular was that? Okay, We're gonna talk bears, Bobcats and Cougar's not that kind Mary a different kind. But first here's Mary. Partly cloudy skies 83 Partly cloudy tonight love only 69. Partly sunny chance of rain But getting up to about 87 for tomorrow. We still have this alcohol village accident..

"I started doing comedy. Magic act is what it was matched. What went over well with rock and roll audiences. I started doing. He'll head island south carolina and the who owned the capricorn records. Which handled the allman brothers band. Leonard skinner and all those guys who just starting out. they won't they yet And he was putting them in these small rooms he saw me and i was doing the you know. It was kind of a carrot top mexican. And when you're performing front rock and roll audience you know if they need something visual. It has to be high energy to keep their attention. Well pretty much and would you say it's not hard to keep their 'cause back then. Everybody was stoned out of their mind. All i'd have to say. Hey i'm gonna make a piano disappear and Would piano disappeared. I can really hard to do magic tricks for a rock and roll. I would say it was tough. It was tough doing tricks for five year olds at birthday cards and it was for a rock and roll.

"Nothing better to do during a pandemic than listened to some new tunes. Some stuff you've been wanting to listen to and haven't had the chance to. I know things are starting opened up across the country but it's nevertheless music can always be escape. It can always be a form of healing and rock and roll is always there for you. It's it's loyalty you so please be loyal to rock and roll like to welcome in our next guest. Some really excited about this. I've had the pleasure of seen him live over the last few years with his old band. Black star riders and also solo. I had a pleasure of seeing him up for the winery dogs here in saint charles just outside of chicago couple years ago. Like to welcome in mr damon johnson. What's going on man. How are you good buddy. Thank you for having me on Sure i miss getting to play live shows at all but i definitely miss coming to the greater chicago. Area man there some of the best rock and roll fans in the country right there. Yeah it's always a great seen a great show whenever whenever. There's a live concert here in chicago whether it's a small club theater or arena it it just has an atmosphere that is like no other. It's really cool. I agree man I've been coming to chicago since the early days of brother cane We could have first. Album outweigh back in ninety three and straightaway man chicago and northern illinois radio in general. They really embrace this. And i feel like it's a relationship that i've been really fortunate to have for gosh man crazy number thirty years ago long time and you have some connection here too in chicago. I know steph from f three design. I think he does your local man. Stephon stephan does everything. He's yeah steffen. I think the first thing he did for me was help me. Get my website design in early two thousands and then Bizmart work for me. On my i guess my second solo album which was in a stick record and then when he has started warns. The arm in You know i've been a proud supporter of their clothing company and i love awareness stuff and they're just they're to of my favorite people on the planet. They're like family to us. Yeah i've known stephan for gosh. It's gotta be two decades three decades almost and i used to live with this rock band in chicago and he used to do. They're designed to as well in all their kind of marketing in and You know other kind kinda website and designing stuff. And i've known him so i run into him at shows like him and i always like bump into each other like. Hey man what's going on so it's always good to see him. That's amazing you've known him longer than i have. So that's That's really cool. And i'm i'm so proud of the growth. They've had their company and They're both incredibly talented. And it's inspiring you know for them to start their own kind of mom and pop business as they as they have and they grown it to the level that they have. I'm really proud to be a part of their circle. Well we got lots to get into but we always begin the episode. Every time we have a first time guest the same way and that's the essence of the show. The the question. We always ask just like every rock song has a hook. That sucks you in rock fan has a moment whether it's a band performance a song or album that hook them on rock and roll. What was it for you. Wow that's a big question The thing that hooked me on rock and roll was. I saw kiss on the midnight special on my television. When i was in the seventh grade and i it was the equivalent. I'm sure jay of our older friends. When they saw the beatles on ed sullivan that was the equivalent of that moment for me. No one's ever asked me that question to tell you the truth You know. I grew up my my folks to this day man. Both my parents love music and so it was a very musical household. The radio was always playing in. Dad would buy vinyl records of perjury artists pop artists and but yeah that was when i felt like it was something that was specifically mind. You know my parents not care for kids. They played black diamond complete with this. You know the rising drum riser in the pyro and everything manages your that. Messed me up preordained. I think it put me on the path for sure. Your kiss was an inspiration for a lot of musicians. And i think it was just the the imagery you know the the faces and the explosions and all the stuff. That kind of just pulled you in you know. The music was great too. But it just had like this power over young kids. I mean i got exposed to kiss back in like the early eighties. And i always remember knowing of them in knowing what they look like before i heard their music and then i heard their music and then i was just hooked. Yeah you know. I you know. I'm i'm probably a little older than you. So you know that midnight. Special show man that would have been nineteen seventy seven grow. This was this was early. This was. I believe this was between kiss alive. One destroyer and You know it was cool. Because i had a group of friends at school that you know we were all kind of discovering rock and roll at the same time and i remember that year in school that no kid and leonard skinner. I'm from the south. And so you know sweet home. Alabama was already the national anthem for us. And so you know the musicality of a ban like skinner We love led zeppelin and You know not long after that. We really got into bands like rush pink. Floyd bad company was big call. Rogers greatest singer of all time. You know things like that. So that set the table for me. I guess jay and then the two big bands not long after that you know when i finally started going to concerts where we saw thin lizzy. Ironically i saw them in seventy nine and that was a game changer for me and The the next summer. I saw van halen for the first time and i was cooked like that's it. I'm i gonna play guitar. You know. I have friends who go to college and get a degree and and and pursued that actually and it wasn't until i had already graduated junior college that i really ever thought of even considering it to be possible to play music as living especially for women coming from such rural backgrounds. There was nobody from where i came from. That was a professional musician. You know so. It just didn't seem possible.

I always like to start off by asking. I guess to tell a little bit about themselves. So if you can k- Right now i'm the host of foul players radio. That's f o w l like the bird It's named after my murder. Mystery company called the foul players of perryville. Perryville is where. I live in maryland. Were about fifty miles northeast of baltimore. The reason why we make that ton or whatever you would say it would be for. Foul is because The town i live in is right on the susquehanna river which is known for its multiple species of waterfowl people. They have actual waterfowl museums ear to talk about that stuff so we figured it'd be a nice play on words for foul play my head. The murder mystery company for a couple of years. Now we perform on boats and on trains office parties and vineyards and whoever have us. I also am a musician. I right now have an acoustic duo. That i've had for about fifteen years and we're kind of comedy act sort of similar to the smothers brothers. It's two of us. We play acoustic guitars and the humor isn't as much when with the banter between us as it is with the humor's actually in songs so that's called. The uncle moldy show. And we perform a in the maryland area a wide knob sometimes in pennsylvania to most recently. You may know me as the viking. And the jim what worth commercials while riding around on the bus. I was the big viking. That came out of the back You've also seen me this year on kimmy versus the reverend if you haven't seen that movie it's based on the unbreakable kimmy schmidt and it's there's a scene where kimmy and tight us. The two main characters are way out in the country and they come into a bar. There's a leonard skinner ban. they're playing. And i'm the bartender in there. I won't give away the movie. But it's an interactive movie but no matter what choices you make in the movie. You always get to see me. So that's the good part about it. You know it's it's not like that movie revolved around me or anything like that We have been nominated nominated for a couple of emmys I believe it was for best special perhaps and then Titus burgess has been nominated for an emmy for male performance. I believe as well. I'm excited about that. I'm also appeared on gotham. I wish unseasoned. Five episode eight played one of the penguins henchman named dale. I was shot to death in the third scene. I was in. And i've also done a number of discovery. Id shows and some mom commercials down here in maryland. When i was starting out and everything. I'm also years ago. I was in the hair bands of the eighties. I had a big hairband back. In those days. I had a band that was kind of more like the call to little bit. After that when the hairband started going out we were called orange seed parade we played. Cbgb's in new york a number of times. And you know open for a couple of national acts over the years. So yes so. That's me in a nutshell so we can get a little more specific if you like Depending well you know the first thing that you said that caught my ear was the susquehanna river and i was thinking of that old. Avidan castillo routine about the susquehanna company. All right right squad at company there may have been years ago but the majority of there's only a couple of miles of the susquehanna bets in maryland and it actually goes all the way up to near upstate new york so there could be something on the way you know that river goes through lancaster and harrisburg and it goes quite a ways up. I believe almost up to upstate. New york if it doesn't start up there somewhere along the line. I'm sure there was and with your murder mystery troop you. You're an actor in the troupe. Right yes i am. Yeah okay so basically your book like for parties and stuff like that and there's someone who's been killed in they have to figure out if it's you or one of your co stars did it. Yeah yeah exactly. Exactly exac- i'm normally the detective and the host i'm normally the host and the narrator at the beginning and i have a row i have roster i would save about fifteen or twenty really good actors from this area here and we we kind of rotate. We were on trains. One of our biggest clients is the western maryland. Scenic railroad all. the way out and cumberland. That's all the way out. The panhandle of maryland out west year west virginia. But we also do the pride of or not the pride of the susquehanna we do. The black eyed susan riverboat. We do Slate form brewery. We do some microbreweries. "All right. So i wanted to pick this one because it's a complicated situation but but it really speaks to our whole a narrative. Our theme here I i picked this one okay. So so one reason is you know i really love the first. Two rawson collins band's albums This is this is the you know one of the post leonard skinner situations after the tragic plane crash But so so they make these two great unheralded southern rock albums and then they make an album where they just call. The ban. rawson returned to the scene of the crime right. Nineteen eighty six. I believe it is But yeah i mean this is the way. Nineteen two amazing record so vans. That's kind of the same situation. Johnny has johnny van zandt and they do a couple of albums and then and then the the name gets short and they make this this purple really modern garish looking album. Cover the name of the band. All of a sudden is then zandt and Yeah very very egregious if if you listen to You know the whole the whole of this record. It's very poppy. Very synthesizer. I guess i guess johnny really in his blood being one of the younger guys as well he in his blood he has a he has. The pop. Hooks of donnie More than anything but as you know as we move on he becomes The lead singer of leonard. Skinner d- doesn't amazing job and leonard. Skinner gets quite heavy. And i love all those those last leonard skinner albums so he He does a lot of amazing work along the way. And actually after this. He's got an album called brickyard road. Which does another commercial thing that these southern rock bands do sometimes But so so. It's more like the production hair metal. Albumin away and he has quite a quite a good hit with with the song. Brickyard road off of that. So that's nineteen ninety but yeah the first ones are no more dirty deals as the donny. Van zandt band eighty-one round to Is in or that's eighteen. Eighty round to eighty one last to the wild ones eighty two and this van zandt record is eighty five but as you can tell i mean this is this is so egregiously. Poppy that you just you don't even really you know. Think of the look of that guy because he looks so southern rock but this record is full of lots and lots of cover tunes. I mean basically on on a lot of his stuff he had a lot of outside writers. And that's obviously one of the big nose. The the egregious crimes of when these bands are doing this sort of thing you think of aerosmith and cheap trick and heart and although song doctors right So so yes. Southern southern rockers will take all those boxes they they almost basically everything everything you can do. Wrong in this In this you know flagrantly shameless. Sellout radio rock direction. The southern rock guys will do fifty percent more than basically any other genre of music. So i guess that's the whole theme of this Of this episode all right. So let's move on Here's our number four selection this.

disabled Americans has reached an all time low Leonard Skinner that means only one thing is a very simple man news very complicated the all things bill o'reilly dot com well bill three year temper tantrum trump well I'm not sick of winning he wins again are acquitted vindicated I would argue and I see a very diminished shallow small petty insignificant in coherent Democratic Party and this is all they've done for three years what do you what say Mr all Riley the simple man well number one I don't think the Democrats are going to get your vote Hannity right search will begin simple enough all right to say Mister Riley okay so best speech ever by Donald Trump amen and I've heard most of them the reason he was pre size and a far cadence and that's what gets through to with the American people that you state your case very clearly and you do it with us already so that's why I believe that last night's speech was the best and then he orchestrated it along with Steven Miller writings a genius he he writes a lot of the president's speeches but Mr trump does take his pen and contribute just like Ronald Reagan did and the other is that that is an absolute fact yes hi everything I tell you how these affect never from that no I'm just gonna let you go bill you this keep going your honor I mean we had a lot to cover here as so the speech was very very effective for him and you could tell that by the tantrum that Nancy Pelosi through so I'm not saying this is a partisan I mean I'm saying is is that Americans are watching this thing in there she is in our little white outfit the honoring this separate German women which I believe happened in nineteen nineteen or something but you know it's okay was will honor it and then she's making the usual faces with the tongue on the teeth okay one scene three times before but then she rips up the speech afterward now that's disrespectful to the whole process not just Donald Trump now she got a little excuse said she tried to shake the president's hand when he came and he didn't want to and I understand why you didn't want to well I mean it's personal any didn't shake princes and either because he didn't want to draw attention to the hand check but by ripping up the speech over remember she didn't introduce him it is my distinct honor and privilege and pleasure she writes you skip that but what did Nancy Pelosi accomplish so it looked like she was a child that's what kids do when they don't like something and she didn't like the speech because she knew it was effective he knew that all the guests and all the things that the audience of thirty five million saw war moving that they meant something and that's why she ripped up her speech so if you look at it from an objective viewpoint the president warned big in the sense that he advanced his reelection chances dramatically and you know that by the stock market today up about five hundred points after this ninety impeachment thing is gone so what do you want to go from here you know look there's a part of me is like this is sad what they've done in the country bill you're a smart guy your symbol man and I want you to look at her this way okay can you name a single thing Democrats have done to make us more safe or secure create a job make us more prosperous in the three years since Donald trumps from president what are they don't the only the Democrats have done is they allied with Donald Trump to pass the prison reform act and it's a good act although the will and to be honest though trump led the entire way and it started with Alice very Johnson was on his radio show yesterday yeah it started with Kanye west guy news for our young and and Kim Kardashian yeah I mean give them credit but no the Democrats are not in a position to really do anything and here's why it's not that they don't like America is and they don't want to help the folks he said that there is a divided party they didn't happen the Democrats understand the lunacy of Alexandria Castiel Cortez I got a job that does so Ron Emmanuel establishment Democrats they know this is crazy but here's the problem please hold out a party I will argue this point at least the Democrats elected maybe maybe you're definitely have these factions like the the Brock bombers faction of the Democratic Party and the Clinton faction of the Democratic Party yeah they're they're scared to death I mean it's like a five alarm fire was the headline and has a five alarm fire has begun caucus glitch emboldened from feeling democratic anxiety which they have about Bernie in the "And so we, you know, I don't want if anybody, but like you were like trying not to be southern where we live real like off southern rock southern rock. We don't like it. You really really hated Leonard Skinner, and which if you look at the content, Leonard Skinner, totally totally awesome. But at the time, you know, as little kids, you know, the stupid things that go through kids minds how we don't like all that southern stuff like country music, it whatever. But but growing up just reminding me of like, you know, little kids stuff, you know, having little childish, you know, not arguments, but just like, you know, musical arguments that you have with your friends about what news is cool in in that. I listened to Leonard skin. And and it's it's all very fondly remembered by me, just and it's really super cool, and it brings back a lot of really cool memories. So there's so much other things attached to all kinds of music that you know, in his kinda little to do with the actual content. Content is the artist's responsibility to try to really do their best all the time. Hey to creek things. I'll let you go is the Queen. You know here in America. It's like Queen mania because of this movie this bohemian rhapsody, moving his that isn't isn't big in Japan. Absolutely. I just thought the day of came out. And boy wouldn't impressive thing. That was. I mean, of course, I'm clean fan. But God God, man. What can I say? I mean from no one. I mean, the sound it's worth it for the sound sound was just were just just would away loved it kinda would expect nothing less from Queen. But God I loved it. And the other thing the last thing is, you know, I am still people get music all different ways. Now streaming there's a some movement back to vinyl. Even people are starting. I've seen cassettes pop up. Again. I am still my favorite format by far still the CD. And I read some stats recently. They thought was really interesting that in Japan. That's where the CD is still the strongest and we're streaming. Is still something that hasn't really latched on is that true. That might be an exaggeration. But I it's probably true that the CD is stronger in Japan than anywhere else in the world. It's still very very real. And it's still a format that people use a lot in. There's a lot of reasons for that would you'll take forever to go into. But yes, CD's popular streaming is also popular vinyl is getting popular. It's not like as as hip. You know, it's getting hip in America, which I love I love that. Because on the big vinyl on myself. And that's why I wanted to make the total old school lies out money. You know, double record vinyl, and and I just love that love the format you sit with record folded out and and clean out pot seeds in the middle of the of the. Now that it's legal and all that. But then again, he told me that there's no seeds in pot anymore. So that shows you how long way from America. And then I don't do that kind of stuff. But you know, you know, what I'm saying? So that the the vinyl experiences. Great. Yeah. Japan CD's are really a it's great. And and I think the reason it's survived is there's a lot of like bonus stuff in the CDs. A lot of CD's have a bonus DVD or they'll have really extended liner notes and excellent photo quality and like involvement from the artists, and you know, all kinds of, you know, telling the story about the songs, and there's like little special promos for gigs coming up and coupons for fan clubs, and it was just a lot more inside the CD that it makes it something that you can't necessarily get. When you stream. So there's a lot of value added to it. Well, I am always fighting the fight to keep the CD alive..

BrainStuff Classics: Why Does Gasoline Smell So Good?

"I'm Jeff Rosenthal. Co-founder of summit a thought leadership community ideas festival, and I have a new podcast called art of the hustle. We'll be breaking down how the world's most fascinating successful. People have hustled their way to the top hearing their wisdom and understanding their ways of seeing with guests like Ireland Hamilton and Tim Ferriss, new episodes drop every Wednesday. So subscribe now on apple podcasts or listen on the iheartradio app or anywhere else. You find podcasts. Welcome to brain stuff from how stuff works. Hey, brain stuff, I'm Lauren Vogel bomb. And today's episode is a classic from our erstwhile host Christian Seder. This one was a script in our old YouTube days, and we found that it was one of our most controversial why does gasoline smell so good for those of you thinking what gasoline smells gross, just believe us for some folks it smells delicious. Either. Gang. I'm Christian Sager and had you ever been to the gas station before filling up your jalopy when suddenly your nostril hairs twins with an aromatic burning sensation it's like the wise sages of Leonard Skinner once saying ooh that smell. Can't you smell that smell? I'm talking about gasoline people. Why does it smell so good? While the first answer is pretty simple actually gasoline or petrol as our friends across the pond like to call. It contains a chemical hydrocarbon called benzine used to boost its octane rating and benzene naturally has a sweet scent to it that our noses are especially sensitive to in fact, it evaporates so quickly that you'd smell benzine instantly. If you just put some in a dish in the same room, you're in it is so pungent we can get a whiff of it. If there's only one to five parts per million in the air, we breathe and benzenes not just in gasoline. We use it in plastics pesticides and detergents. It's also in a lot of mass. Produced toys. So it's possible. You're associating the smell of gasoline with that new toys smell from your childhood, but don't let it's odor. Get. It's enchanting hooks in you too far because Skinner also had it, right? When they sang that smell, the smell of death surrounds you. That's right. The smell of benzene can be fork. But it's also toxic. If you inhale large amounts of it it actually attacks your nervous system. Luckily, it's so pungent that we have plenty of warning before hazardous exposure. That's why it can start to make you nauseous or give you a headache after awhile and the consequences of sniffing too, much benzine and gasoline are not pretty inhalant abuse leads to loss of consciousness, seizures liver injury and distress within your heart and lungs keep going after that and you're looking at neurological impairment and straight up brain damage, the EPA OSHA and who also categorized benzene as a carcinogen the cancers. It's associated with the most are leukemia and. Mm foam and get this. There's possibly another less dangerous reason why we like the smell of gasoline so much. A study published in two thousand nine issue of addiction research in theory indicates that gasoline smells better to us when we're hungry. It found that people rate the smell of gasoline as being more pleasant and intense the longer it had been since they'd last eaten more research is obviously required. But there seems to be a link between our degree of hunger and our odor perception of gasoline. Maybe that's why gas stations make such a killing on selling junk food. Today's episode was written by Christian and produced by Tyler clang for more on this and lots of other topics. Visit our home planet. How stuff works dot com. Hebron's listeners today. I wanted to tell you about the new podcast the brink in which hosts aerial Casten and Jonathan Strickland shared the stories of entrepreneurs who took a bold step without really, knowing if solid ground would be on the other side, tune into learn how Walt Disney bet his company and his house on the world's first feature length cartoon, and how a refugee from Vietnam turned a door to door business into a chili sauce empire every week. The brink will bring you news stories of the trials and triumphs of people who didn't let adversity stop their dreams because sometimes things just don't go your way. But what really matters are the choices you make when the odds are against you. You can listen and subscribe to the brink on apple podcasts iheartradio app or wherever you listen to podcasts.
