Her walking out by herself and so I I her but my head was turned back to the screen. As I was walking up the aisle at S- sounds about right. It's a sickness in a way in general. Don't walk out in a theater It's very rare. I think the last time I did was that movie first. Grader sat the one that the foreign when that was telluride. People were Ya. Everyone kept saying. Oh it's so uplifting it's beautiful and I went and saw it was a late. Screening movie started at midnight or something like that. It was so upsetting so upsetting and depressing that after about a half an hour. I just decided that I would rather go to bed and I walked out and I do not regret that Lowell. Wants to know. What would you call the perfect movie Casablanca? Up there is no is is my perfect movie because It fulfils everything sets out to do. I mean sets out to be and it has Romance Humor Suspense Timeliness at a point of view what more could want in a movie you know. What's another perfect movie? A Christmas story a perfect movie. It holds up. You know you wouldn't want to change your frame. Yeah are you ever going to have Ethan and Patrick Wayne on your podcast. I wouldn't wouldn't mind Have them call us and we will figure it out. Armchair wanted to know what the first film you reviewed was Is there a filmmaker living or deceased whom you feel had slash has produced a body of work you feel to be woefully under appreciated whole a body of work somebody who never got the recognition he or she deserved Well one of my unsung heroes. Heroines is Maggie Greenwald L. Yes as well as you know. And who made the song catcher which we presented at Malton fest last year which is just a glorious film and she made a film before that that got recognition at Sundance to called The kill off based on the Jim Thompson novel and then she made a film. I really like call the ballot. A Little Joe starring Suzy Amos and she sent some other. Works is not some television work. She does some teaching. She's a real talent that deserves to be better known and more celebrated. Yeah and I would say to you guys. We're going to wrap up Who Do you appreciate? Who is a filmmaker That you love to tell people about what are some films that you love to tout? What are movies that you love saying to your friends? Have you seen this? I want to show it to you because the truth is there are just so many out there not to mention if you get into the around the world the whole other thing and i. I'm always fascinated I love. I love asking people. What's a movie that you recommend to everybody? What someone you love just say. What are you loved the show to your friends? Everybody comes over. What do you want to watch because it is the only way to actually know for years now? Three for years. I used to recommend House of Games David mammoths film and people would thank me and then when it came out the Joseph Gordon Levitt Shaky shaky knowing the one where he plays. The slot handicapped a little slow at the lookout. They'll look out there lookout. You nailed it Scott. Frank movies the lookout. That's another one. People thanked me recommend it so good. Yeah and there's some basic ones like our opening night from Alton Festivals Sing Street. You're going to like that movie. It's a great movie it's delightful. It's everything you need especially right now. I don't WanNa Watch stuff. That's depressing right now. It's that does in general to be honest. That's not what I look for. I really prefer watching stuff that makes me laugh. Of course I will watch things that are serious but you know it is amazing. How good you feel. It's why I think people will always look to something like singing in the rain I mean you know. We've discussed this before. But escapism gets a bad name because a lot of a lot of what passes for escapism is just yeah or if not crap than just you know. A flighty inconsequential stuff. But a film. Like singing in the rain. Or one of the Fred astaire Ginger Rogers Movies never actually lifts your spirits makes you feel better than you did when you walked into the theater. Two hours earlier and to do that. I think is a very high form of art. It is and not not to be dismissed. We will if we're if we're together whether we're at we're at a film festival and where in our hotel at the end of the day or or for just like now we're home together. We'll pull up clips on YouTube. My Watch dance number. I'll watch the Nicholas brothers. I will find something and the smile on your face. The way you feel the way to uplift you You know my mom and I were just. We went for a drive along the coast just to get outside and to look at the ocean and we were listening. Mom and I love our show tunes and we're listening to Gypsy into Care Sal and and you know those overtures especially and those are two shows with incredible overtures it just lifts you and lightens you. The other night. We finished dinner put on the barn raising scene from a barn raising dance scene from seven brothers. My mom and I watched it for the seven billionth time and I smiled. So you know it's As you say I think it is hard. I think that it is something. Something really magical. Few can watch something minutes if it was easy to do ever more of a man. Oh man well as I say Leave your comments. Let us know what else you'd like to hear about where here we hope that you are well and we will speak to you soon..

Disney, Walt Disney And Bob Eiger discussed on /Film Daily

"Talked earlier about this Disney. Disney investors meeting that they had during that investors meeting. They actually revealed that Disney plus will house the. Entire Disney motion picture library, including things from the Disney vault. Chris what do we know during at the end of the shareholders meeting? There was a Q and A session and Bob Eiger just casually tossed this off he really didn't make a big deal out of it. Even though it sounds like a big deal, but he revealed that Disney plus the upcoming Disney streaming service will eventually have the entire Disney motion picture library and the Disney bolt. And if you don't know what the Disney vault is Disney in a clever marketing strategy, they only release their movies on home video or in this case in this day and age digital for a certain period of time. And then they pull it away, and it's not available for years. And then when they released it again to everyone will quickly by it again. Like one of my friends yesterday was complaining that he wanted to show. His kids Cinderella is not available anywhere on digital right now. Yeah, it's nuts. And I mean, it's not for us. It's a great business for them. But according. To this. It's going to all be available soon on Disney. Plus, but there are a lot of questions like this. The first thing that came up in our slack channel. Was you know, is is he serious about every Disney movie being on there? Like is the very controversial song of the south going to be available in there. I can't imagine that happening. But he literally said every single movie see I feel like with song of the south. What you need to do. Is you need to get like Leonard Maltin provide like a, you know, fifteen minute intro providing historical context and in talking about the controversy. I mean like I feel like that would be needed. Like, you can't have the movie on there. Like, you know, quite play. Yeah. I agree. There is a way to show it with that historical context, if they do it that way. So maybe you're right. Maybe they would do something. Like that. Who knows? Yeah. I pretty much assume that the vault was going to be on there. I'm just wondering how big the comics concerts because I think he said like the motion picture library. They have so many shorts. They have so many TV specials all those like Disneyland specials. I used to collect those on DVD. They used to have these like teen of like these are called Walt Disney. They're like these tens of like these old like Disneyland specials and stuff and like actually most DVD's are worth like nothing today. But if you want to sell one of those teams like they're still worth like some of them are worth hundreds of dollars because there was such limited edition. So I'm wondering if that material is going to be available in in Disney. Plus Jacob is there anything in particular you want to see from the vault. I wanna see all super old short in the twenties all your work stuff from from back when Disney was still learning his craft and was like in the acquired all that stuff. Right. We they have. And I just early Disney stuff is weird. And it's from before Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck became mascots. And they were allowed to like be full fledged characters in a way that's often. Very surprising. And there's all sorts are weird. And they're funny, and they're the often surreal and by the forties and fifties, but time color came around. Mickey was drained of personality, and he stopped being mischievous a heroic character that we see in the original shorts. So even though even though today's credit the

That's a truly wonderful wonderful. Yeah. It was made from the heart. Absolutely. And you can tell you can tell that. This is not just a job for these people for Tim Burton behind the camera. All all the way around, you know, wonderful cast. That's a film. I really careful. It's like they understood that he was tacky and not very talented, but they treated it which enter entity love letter that movie. Yeah. Yes, it is. And of course, Johnny Depp gives a wonderful performance. Because I think he captures what I think Edward must've been like, which is a guy was great passion and enthusiasm at infectious enthusiasm that. Surrounded his band of comrades behind the camera and front of it. And all he lacked was challenge. Yeah. I've I've mentioned on this show before that. I think that's a sub-genre which is the crazy dreamer like talking like Tucker a man and his dream or or Herzogs fits corralled o or would mosquito coast. I mean, they're all they're all kind. Yes. Yes. I agree with you. And I I think one of my favorite lines in Edgewood is when he completes Glennon, Glenda and movie producer that will movie distributor say this is the worst movie I ever saw. And he goes, well, my next one will be better. Very nice house. The Keaton movie that Donald O'Connor mate. I've never seen that one. Speaking speaking movies about comedians. The Buster Keaton the Buster Keaton story. Yes, not not one of the highlights of parade of motion picture. Okay. Forget that one too. I remember when they did the TV movie of Robin Williams life. Yeah. The guy imitating, Robin. Williams was great. I mean, he did a perfect imitation. But there too he sitting next to somebody. And in easy chair sipping Pena Collado with him. And and guy goes so, Robin. How you feeling any goes? Oh, I'm fairly wonderful here. I am sitting next to Robert Evans, the producer. I'm currently doing Haapai with Robin old men who did my here. "And even started the tit for tat tent of Teaneck New Jersey. When I was thirteen years old. So they mean a lot to me to put mildly. I forgot I was watching actors. That's how convincing John C Reilly. And Steve Coogan are as these characters not just the makeup, which Riley's cases extensive. But you believe these you're watching the real thing about that Gil, we have we have to see it. I now. The last week of the month. We'll have to go on a date. Yeah. We'll get the we'll get the brioche wasn't a ginger strawberries, of course, whatever it was or some hard, boiled, eggs and nuts. Yeah. It's like to me. I I saw that. They would say three stooges movie there was really brothers. I will say I thought the actors were terrific and those job. Yeah. The makeup was stir Fiqh I was convinced. It was the stooges other than it wasn't funny at all. Well, you know, you can't have everything. Yeah. Our friend Craig berko was funny. Yes. It was the bad guy. Right. I mean, you know to quote Bette Davis from now Voyager we have the the moon. Let's not ask for this. Of course, what he just misquoted that line. But something like that. Which brings me to my question. Why is it hard to make a good mile pick, particularly of of showbiz figures and entertainment figures, I think of the chaplain movie, which wasn't very successful. And know if we really want to scrape the bottom of the barrel WC fields in me Steiger the bottom of the barrel. That's not the somewhere somewhere sliding down Gable? In lumbar does the bottom day was short drift story or with raid, Dan. That's right. The Eddie cantor story with Keith. Fantastic talented, Keith. A friend an old friend, and I have been teasing each other kief pursell for decades whenever we find. When we find some nugget about his ver- CBS variety show or some of the appalling movies he made during the fifties. We just we fell over it cliff nester off about him. I remember in that movie. He said he can't her and his good pal. Jimmy, Durante stop silver. Oh, yes. The worst makeup job ever. It looked like they they glued a hotdog guy snows and he's staying like. John. Not one of the more memorable bio pics, then I owed sir on this is a problem with every movie, but particularly bios or based on true stories, and I always one of my favorite is in the and also to bio and that was the. Oh god. Now Darren oh beyond the sea. I'll beyond the scene with Kevin Spacey. He's manager. John goodman. Yeah. And at one point in the movie, he says my career gone nowhere, and John Goodman has to go talk about Bobby your one five albums swine. You for an Academy Award voted the greatest lives Vegas performed are night thought. Okay. Let me write this down. That's that's what they call exposition. Clunky. Clunky. Exposition? Yes, clunky. Indeed. There aren't very many good ones. I mean, there are always exceptions now on that. I just saw the, Freddie Mercury film mixed reviews. And I enjoyed it. You did. I don't know how absolutely accurate it is. But this Rami Malek again is convince me that he was Freddie Mercury. And it's not it's not a the deepest. Dramatic dramatic biography I've ever seen, but the music is great. And and it's enjoyable see. I always I'm a big fan of those movies those TV movies. They were a bunch of them all at once. There was the late shift that was about letter. Yeah. Right. And they followed it up with like the true story of Charlie's angels. Sure stories say. I had a tire rotation appointment that night. So I couldn't see it. Save those. I when I sit down to those I go, okay. This is gonna be shit. And I know that so let me sit back and enjoy I'll tell you exactly a good one from a few years ago was love and mercy about Brian Wilson. Yes. That was actually a wonderful really good with two great performance. Great performances. Then there was so so James Berlin. As Clark brought that one up. Yeah. Yeah. I saw that at one of the theaters in Times Square. On broadway. Can't remember which one they're all gone now. I don't remember it was the Astor of the criteria. They're all gone one of those places uncanny..

"Michael g Aquino one episode even featured that titan of this shiver screen Gilbert, Godfrey house less please welcome to the show someone who's forgotten more about Hollywood as story then. Franken I will ever dream of knowing Marge. Simpson's favourite. Film critic our pal Leonard Maltin forgotten more during the course of that introduction. Any other time in my professional career. But it's very flattering. Thank you. Gilbert now, thank you. Gilbert. Yes. What I wanted to start off with. I when I think of old the movies that I've seen over the years. Some that. I haven't seen loads I've seen in movie theaters. And I think now none of these would ever make it to a movie theater. And and movie theaters seemed to be going the way of like vaudeville houses. Well, some of them are. But a lot of them aren't there's still a lot of life in the movie theater business. And I'm not ready to give it its last rites. Well, that's good to hear. And and because I'm Jewish. I couldn't give them their last rites. But, but I I really don't think it's going away moviegoing still a social activity. You know, what are you going to do Friday night Saturday night? If you wanna if you're a teenager, you want to go on a date, if you're at any age you wanted to go and hang out with some friends and see something. For for parents. It's an escape for a night, you pay a babysitter and go to the movies. Yes. There's a lot of temptation to stay home. Now. It's true. So there's no question that the competition has gotten ferocious and. And this is really hurt the small movie and the medium sized movie. But you don't hear anybody. You know, the the week that evanger 's Infinity wars open, you don't hear anybody saying, I'll wait for cable. They all want to be there. So you saying that show up for event movies? See, but that is. Ten poll dental. Yeah, it's like I think of people who are stars now. And I wonder like years ago like Julia Roberts. Yeah. Could cheat nowadays if she was younger if could she nowadays be making these cute romantic comedies and having them put them an actual theaters. Well, it's debatable. I don't know every now, and then there's a surprise if something does break through one of the breakthroughs this this season since summer has been documentary the one about mister Rogers. Oh, yeah. Should be my neighbor. It's an absolutely wonderful film, very emotional full of heart and it's a documentary and it's broken records. So, you know, anything's possible. That's why I choose to try to retain my optimism. Well, you're in LA, Leonard. So you still got the what you've still got the arc light. It and the and the and the the man's theater Grauman's now again, no Chinese speak round, the Chinese theater. You've got the you've got the Cinerama. You've still got, you know, movies show places where we lost. Oh, yes. Here if you're lucky enough to get an invitation to go to screening at the academy of motion big sciences, they have a beautiful beautiful auditorium. I remember and right before we got on the air and this Fitschen perfectly. You're reading an article to us if you could tell us about that our this is from I think yesterday's Los Angeles Times. And it's about a recruiter Hosa developer out here. Who's had great success building, not just malls? But environments, he did the grove which is kind of based on Disneyland inspired by Disneyland even has a trolley going. That'll that'll take you to the farmers market. And he's in Pasadena, call the Americana in these new newest one is in Pacific Palisades, which is very high end neighborhood and they've rebuilt at great cost of vintage movie. Later called the bay theatre be a Y and here are some of the menu items that I know Gilbert and Frank will recall from their childhood days, vegan, spring rolls with Thai peanut sauce and Eminem's on the side. A Kobe beef burger with bacon. Saracho mayo which is great accompaniment to your red vines and brioche sandwich with sauteed, shrimp, blended, cheeses, and pickled strawberries..

So for Tien for one of the best movies of the year, which happens to be a documentary and it's becoming quite a hit. This is Mr. Rogers of mister Rogers. Year long ago Bunka and he's holding a little train little train from his Mr. Rogers. He's called, won't you be my neighbor and if you haven't seen it yet, it's terrific. I feel like I freight outcry through the whole thing. You will. Okay. Thanks. And also being shameless. I brought a copy of my new book. Yes, John Hollywood done Hollywood by Leonard Maltin. Which is a collection of articles and interviews over many decades. Going back to my teens, actually. Wow. You're teens your teen interviewer? I was not a good one. Right? But I say whatever you do the early start the better, and that's. That's awesome. So thank you for bringing those things and for being here and I'm gonna ask you first, maybe you already answered this question, but what was the last movie you saw? Was it mama? Mia, to back fucking at it. Well, let me to try to stop us. Mumia to what are you looking at. And every one of those subtitles fits. Right. Well, what was the last movie you saw? Was it that one or another? Was that one? Oh, shit. What was the one you saw before that? Just before that I. Well, I can recall is the trick part. Yeah, that's why I'm not seeing as many movies. Tell us about a movie you've seen like maybe like, well, thinking in the rain. I know you can't talk short about saying the rain. It's too great too many great things to say. There's so many things to say. I saw. I saw the film leave, no trace. Oh, okay. Which is really good with Ben foster always Great Britain usually menacing. He's, he's nice in this. He's nice. He's a an overprotective father who suffering from PTSD and he's trying to live with his his daughter off the grid completely. He's he doesn't want to deal with the government or any government agency ever again and is written and directed by Debra Granik who made winter's bone. Okay. On that launch, Jennifer, Lawrence and part of that film called down to the bone, which made me aware of verify Amiga for the first time, so. Right, right. So she and her writing partner an Rossellini adapted this novel, and it's a really moving film and Ben foster who I always like is exceptionally good and the girl. I can't remember her name. I'm barris to sit, but the girls great to somebody knows it leave. No trace good movie, Doug. Could I ask the eagle. Oh, how the eagle feels about a weed character who doesn't trust the government agencies anymore. Fuck trump. Oh, wow. Wine. Siegel really does put country before party. Do. All right. I didn't. I did not know that might even be saying it wrong, but wasn't a great when I had Bob Sach it on the show. I've got a CD of mine called smug life stickers for never not funny and Douglas movies and beautiful christmasy peacemaker. Waterpipe don't call it anything else. If you call it something else, I'll say wrong because it rhymes. So there you go. All that stuff is in the bag. And plus the stuff brought by my guest tonight. Three, I'd say three esteemed individuals, it's Comecon week. So I have three steamed individuals in the area of film conversation and criticism. So please give it up everybody for who do I have tonight? It's Mark Ellis, Graham Elwood, and Leonard Maltin. That was for you. Oh, well, thank you for it's for me personally, some for the prize bag. Your version is in the mail. I was just showing. All right. Let's meet them individually starting with to directly to my left to right in front of eighty. It's Mr. Leonard Maltin. Thank you want. Oh my God. Eddie is so excited. I should just jump right to Eddie Evan questions for the great film critic Leonard Maltin. Where do you stand on bird on a wire. Did you like that one with Kurt Russell and Goldie? Hawn? No, not curve. I apologize. Well, he's not racist. Yes. Hell. Okay. Give and Goldie Hawn. Did you like that? Not a lot. I didn't like that. Yeah, we're down on that. So. Okay. Such. Sandwich. Have I status my street crab with Eddie now, do you think? I don't know. I mean, Eddie's never come to life before. So this is this is a very exciting night momentous, but it's always exciting to have letter Multan on the show because. You know, you're, I don't know how many movies you think you're seeing a year at this point in your life? Couple hundred couple hundred. Yeah. You're a bunch of failures out there. Can't even see fifty or ten. Fifty or ten. My math is where I must. I must say, I must tell you, I've gotten choosers. I'm getting all right. Well, I I have course also got choosier like to me if a movie really wants me to not see it, then make sure I see the trailer a lot. I'm going to be like, I've seen it. I feel like I've seen it exact that movie the mountain between us. Did you see that one with Reese? Elba and Kate Winslet fucking fall in love on a mountain. You would not even believe how long they spend deciding if they're love, not after getting off of that fucking mountain. The movie just plays like an action film. It's like, you got some time at the end. Where you really have to watch some people learn what they learned about each other on that mountain and turns out, yes, there is a mountain between them. Wow. In more ways than one, beautiful description, right. And you see a man get his leg caught in a bear trap, which is always Larry. So. What does it with torture, this torture, and all these movies too much torture I. Yeah, I really can't take enough little little kisses little sweet kisses. Yes, more movies with that movies with torture. Did you see red Sparrow? I did not, but I know swinging. Good. There is no sweet ho look rat. There's no sweet. No, not one. That was not a single one. I haven't even bring myself to watch a plane because often you'll want to walk out so don't do that. Okay. Yes, great advice. You guys don't watch shitty movie on a plane because you might walk out. There was there was a theater critic when I was growing up the New York Times named Mel Gus. Oh, very good writer. And he was kind of the second-string critic, but like a lot of second-stringers he was really good almost as good as the main guy. Why do you look at me when you said like a lot of. Starring on a lot of third, bananas, smart. Just a little head turn that's oughta house. He had a great theory hit a theory that any bad play by extension, any bad movie always had self incriminating dialogue in it. So for instance, he'd be watching a French farce, a really clumsy French farce..
