Leaving the Unvaccinated Behind Is How You Get Death Camps

"Joy reed says i've a message to republicans. Okay we get it you guys love covert and you want pumping through your veins. I mean this is literally an insane rent. This person's very well watched and respected. Amongst the american left this only contributes to this kind of unraveling of the republic that we have feared for some time. Play eighty nine all right. Good evening everyone read out tonight with a message to republicans okay we covert is the precious and yoon love it. You love colvin so much. Wanted to spread into schools at the office in the walmart all the cruise ships at the club. That grace spongy ball with the red spikes you want pumping through your veins with an ivermectin chase. That's her opening segment. They have no desire to bring the country together. They have no desire to try to build bridges to try to categorize republicans and conservatives as if we love it. I think she might be coy. She's been coy or sarcastic. Or whatever don lemond wants to literally leave unvaccinated behind. It's time to just say to seventy million people you have to go. This is how you get death camps just so we're all clear.

"I'm so excited for this because I. Admittedly have never been to New Orleans. Although many Louisianans. Oh, Lord, what's the Deborah and we're going to get into that I got. Using Indians Louisianans have told me like. Oh, you gotta get down there and have some shrimp to fe. experienced the joy of New Orleans, so. Yeah, yeah, I just allow me to bathe in the knowledge of the south. I was you in crab? Boil right now. Sounds a little painful. Be Baptized and Gumbo. Is that service you provide in your church Father Brad. I cook. I Cook like the other day. I went over in at a social distance, sat and and prisoners, driveway and boiled to Sachse, crawfish and like just gave it to him and sat at. It's socially distant. Right off, but so I I do do that, but they usually eat it. They don't pour it on their head or it on themselves. I mean that's the waste, so that's understandable. Who Hey please. The floor is yours Sir Nice okay, so we're gonNA start with pronunciation. Very while the city derives its name from the city of early-on, France. It's not pronounced that way or else people think you are conceded. I'm in New Orleans. So, it's some other mistaken. Situations are new, Orleans or even worse knowledge wins okay. That's very touristy. Okay, One's going around. Saying Nolan's in New Orleans like when we kept referring to Chicago is Chinatown. From What he says, so the best way to say New Orleans is just a smash two words together and just say New Orleans. Let's try like Toronto. Toronto Yeah Yeah. New Orleans okay, and if you live in new, Orleans you're a newer Linian. Okay important, okay, so history! I think it's historically interesting because it's. It's kind of very different from a lot of the country, our country. As is the case with most of the Americas the human history of South Louisiana begins with native Americans right. There were there. And the major tribes inhabiting the area, or the president. Of President of the Chitter Maka and the choctaw tribes, and what's cool is the chicken Maka are the only native tribe of Louisiana. He's still inhabit part of their ancestral land, so we still have people who are a part of the tribe that still inhabit where their ancestors lift our. And many of the rivers streets still bear their the language of the choctaw. For instance there's a street called Chop Tulips, which is just really hard to pronounce even harder to spell. But it is right there on the river, and a lot of stuff is on top of tulips now it's. Exploding section of the city and that's actually a choctaw word. It's not French anish or Haitian or anything. okay. New Orleans. As we know it now is the result of a French colony. Probably know that is founded in seventeen eighteen by Montreal Frenchman and this is you know. French people have these long names a John. Baptiste Lemond be in Ville. But we just call him. Be in Ville feels like a the founder of New Orleans. Chose New Orleans because of the high elevation like where it's at. It's actually has a natural levee where it's located like the French quarter now is where the original spotless, and it didn't flood during Katrina so the French quarter didn't flood. who was all the surrounding areas that flooded? Okay so the land itself is a natural. Levian protected it from the floodwaters exactly. Of Us. WHO. Are probably thinking well. It's at the mouth of the Mississippi right like exactly. something. It's it's not exactly right there. Most of the city. We'll get to that the geography of it. Or geology of it, but it's that section. He chose wisely I mean he chose it for a reason right, so it's a little higher than all the other areas, but it's near strategic waterways. Help it with its. It was considered a port at the beginning I. It's still is, but it was. It was supposed to be the gateway to. Louisiana territory. Okay, so in seventeen twenty two. It was made the capital of French Louisiana though it struggled at first we think of new. Orleans a super touristy, like a great place to go experience, culture and music, but that wasn't the case at the beginning. It was on the outskirts. It was very rustic There's a one of my favorite quotes from missionary priest. Who is there in seventeen twenty one? And this is his quote about New Orleans. He says it's a place of one hundred wretched hovels in malaria, sweat, thicket of willows and Dwarf Palmettos, infested by serpents and alligators. That sounds disgusting. Florida. Things are. A minus the malaria pretty much pretty much accurate even. Mosquitoes. So yeah, that was it wasn't. It wasn't always the tourist destination so and it was French colony until seventeen, sixty three, when very confusing land trades from treaties from the French and Indian war, which not going to explain it I don't quite frankly because I don't understand but that resulted in Spain so seventeen, sixty three Spain, the kingdom of Spain like the monarchy took over. and. They got the territory west of the Mississippi, so Spain got all the territory in the Louisiana territory west of the Mississippi. Plus, New Orleans in Britain got east of the Mississippi minus northern New Orleans this little bitty section. That Spain was like now we want that. which is kind of important because Britain? Never controlled New Orleans. They never controlled it, which is kind of like a point of pride for us. I mean with the French and British kind of beef, but but also because later, and we'll get to the battle in Orleans. We. We fought back the British. In the battle of eighteen twelve at the battle, yeah, that way you can twelve okay, so all in all New Orleans has been under the control of the following. People's the Chitty Maka the monarchy of France. The monarchy of Spain. And then it went back to the Republika France this is post, French Revolution Right Oh early eighteen hundreds and then. U. S. A.. And in eighteen O, three right with the signing the Louisiana purchase the first major event in US new, Orleans, history was in eighteen, fifteen at the end of the war of eighteen twelve, so US forces the militias of New Orleans so just regular new Orleanians like picking up arms, and even a pirate, so there's a famous pirate named John Lafitte. Have you ever heard of John Lafitte Yes, and the BARATARIA. There were basically I mean we were taking every body. And just throwing them at the British we're like we are not letting them. Take the French quarter. Okay, and so they they set up in this place called Shell met, which is really really marshy it's south of New Orleans. and. We fought them back in and actually they were led by Andrew Jackson so old hickory himself.

New Orleans Orleans Louisiana Spain Malaria French Louisiana Toronto Mississippi France Deborah Father Brad New Orleans. Republika France Chitter Maka Andrew Jackson Montreal South Louisiana John Lafitte Sachse Americas

Where my family's from my my history, our culture people know this on my podcast. I'm talking about Mardi Gras the time talking about music, I'm talking about food and and so I reached out and I was like hey. I think they would enjoy kind of deep dive into New Orleans. As an episode. I'm so excited for this because I.

The Nrburgring

"I'm your host Scott Benjamin and I am Kirk Garin. I'm super excited about this show this week because we've got a topic that's got a lot of meat to it and something that. I think that Is going to be just right for conversation between the two of us because we both have an interest in the sort of thing anyway in a little bit of track driving a little bit of Little Thrill seeking. I guess. Maybe we're both kind of Not Adrenalin Junkies. But we both like to Kinda chest limits of our vehicles kind of you know. Just get out there and have a little bit of fun on them. And I think this is something that a lot of people can relate to. Maybe not a lot of people have done this in the past. Of course. I think we're GONNA find very few of our listeners. Have actually done this but there are a couple of examples that that I'll tell you about in just a moment so let's just jump right into it and I'll tell our listeners. What we're GONNA be talking about today in. It was kind of a question that I had. And it's something that I I know. I voiced on my other show on car stuff in the past and and I think maybe answered it a little bit and we've even discussed this track and Ha- I'll get to all of this. You understand in just a moment but my question is about the nurburgring and the nurburgring has in the past. I don't know decade or maybe even twelve fifteen years seemed to be the place that manufacturers have taken their automobiles to test limits to see how fast they can lap the nurburgring and it was a specific part of the nurburgring. That they do. This in. There's it's it's a It's a certain loop that they tested on. We'll talk about it. What it is is. It's kind of like a a level playing field for all manufacturers to be able to go and say we can run this track at this speed in this amount of time in this car and it. That's where cars the best and if you think you can top it go do it. Yeah and it offers a bunch of different types of conditions as well through the surface of the course and the terrain and weather and all sorts of other obstacles that make it interesting and kind of like a something to brag about though absolutely. We're we'll talk about all of this because there's some really believe it or not. Even the weather is a fascinating topic on this track. So as the surface material because it changes over over time Over distance rather and maybe one of the coolest things about this is that you can go and drive on this track if you just have a few dollars in your pocket. It doesn't really cost that much money. It's officially a toll road and I know I'm probably not giving anything away by saying that right now and then there's some fascinating things that go along with this whole thing. Now here's a little bit of background and I. I want temper this with this thought. It was a car stuff episode on the Nurburgring and we went through a lot of history. We went through the details of how they modify the track. And you know like the different curves and all that stuff and and the The barriers and I. It's just a lot of information about the track itself. So there's a ton of history. There's a ton of material there about Grand Prix or about Grand Prix racing in about You know the switch over Formula One and all of that. It's all there So I don't Wanna I don't WANNA double up on too much of that and I know that's tough not to step on that so we're GONNA WE'RE GONNA have a little bit of overlap but not a whole lot now. There's a few things that I do. I do feel like we need to repeat. This is just because there's some really interesting things about this. Track that thinker important and one number one. Probably the most important thing that we need to know about this track is that it's insanely dangerous. Insanely dangerous. I mean it really is and it was designed a long time ago. I think the track was built in one thousand nine hundred eighty five and I. It's like it's a huge huge track. It's it's what Woke in its current Form I think that the overall lap if you the norge left's norge sleep that we're GonNa talk about which is the north loop Is about fourteen I. It's over fourteen. Miles right yeah okay. So one hundred fifty turns. Yeah Oh yeah. That's right that's right. Yeah that's another important point. This is this. Of course it goes through the mountains. I'd like to see with allocation changes. Of course that I think that I think that I read somewhere that the elevation changes over a thousand feet Between the start and finish of the of the tracks so really an interesting track. It's fascinating what did you say? One hundred and fifty some turns you Y. They had more. They tried to make it safer and And that's partly due to Jackie Stewart in fact. It's it's mostly due to Jackie Stewart and a lot of other f one drivers that got together and said we are actually where they're actually going to boycott this race if they didn't make some changes in this. This wasn't always the case because early on you know Formula One. It was a little bit different. Who is it was? It was faster but it wasn't quite as fast and it wasn't quite as dangerous as it was in the late nineteen sixties and they started adding some wings to the cars and add a little. More downforce You know where the car stuck to the track exactly so when they when they would over some of the more pronounced elevation quick elevation changes. Maybe the car would get lighter than it should have been or trying to figure out why the drivers were so afraid of this particular track. And that's all I could come up with Scott wasn't that the course changed course exactly. Yeah the car's got faster in. The cars changed more dependent on air flowing flowing around it in a certain way. Absolutely not cars aren't supposed to get too far off the caress service. Yeah exactly right. Cars DESIGNED TO BE ON THE TRACK SURFACE. And we've talked about this with you know the thrust S. S. C. And you know all the other cars that are going fast and essentially every card. We talked about so far on the fast track But cars are designed to stay low to stay kind of stuck to the ground. The faster you go the more downforce. They have to have in order to stay on the ground. And what happens is that there's some dramatic elevation changes and whether it's just a little rise or You know it's like you're coming over a crest and you can't see what's going on and on the other side of it In a drops right off at this point. The cars were going so fast that they were becoming airborne and part of the problem. Was that with the way that the downforce was Designed these cars I. It was meant to act like a reverse wing to push the car down so when you get air underneath the car it acts in the opposite way. It acts like it's GonNa WanNa lift off and we've seen that in recent years of course with lemond other tracks as well. It's not just it's not just the neubergring But but tracks were cars become airborne these road courses are really really dangerous for drivers that are going super super fast and Back then you know back in the delete sick making sixties Jackie Stewart was saying at the time and I think I've mentioned this and other podcasts. Even though the F. One podcast is that you know a lot of his friends. Were dying on this on this. Unease circuits on these Research in the nurburgring was especially dangerous. In fact One of the facts that came out of the last Cardiff episode. And I think it was. Something that Ben mentioned is that this is hard to believe in. I don't know where he dug this up but I but I do remember him saying that. F One drivers had a two thirds chance over five years of competition that they would be killed in competition in five years. Two thirds chance that sixty six percent chance that you would die in a race if you raise for five years or longer. Nfl competition at the time. And this is like during the late nineteen sixties early nineteen seventies. So Jackie Stewart had a very valid point. You know he said. You know I'm losing. I'm losing friends every weekend on these tracks. Safeties got improve in some way. Let's start with cars of course but let's move onto you know safety equipment and tracks and everything. So he wanted improvements everywhere the Nurburgring. They responded they changed a lot of the a lot of the track. You know they slowed down some of the corners and you know it made it a little bit safer in a lot of ways and there's a lot of ways they can design corners to make them a little bit better but overall still. The Nurburgring is just an inherently dangerous. Course for a lot of reasons and I I think you you already know a couple of reasons. Why Yeah Yeah. I think I know what you're trying to get. At the fact that the track is kind of laid right on top of these extremely rolling hills and in the middle of a forest It's a lot narrower than a lot of modern day race tracks are designed to be The surface is different. The weather conditions are different. And then just the general speed at which you're going Of course was designed at a time when cars didn't see speeds like they see now sure they were fast but they weren't quite as fast as now we're in the sixties and seventies and then even now. I mean they're they're incredibly fast and you know. I think I want to mention this right now. If that's all right I I wanted to take just a second to say that I think the last German Grand Prix that was run at the nurburgring. And that's very specific. We'll we'll talk about that in a second but the last one was run at the nurburgring was in two thousand thirteen and You know of course there were other journ Grand Prix is I mean. The latest one was in twenty eighteen. I believe right or was there one in twenty nineteen there might have been the German Green. Just had it okay. All right But but they kind of like skip around so it's not always run at Hockenheim ring or at the nurburgring. It's kind of a mix the two or sometimes it's just not even either one of those you know depending on whether they're gonna run something else

'Parasite' winning best picture would make movies richer

"So the nine best picture nominees are of Ford. Vive Ferrari affordably. Ferrari is Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the story of Ford trying to build a car to beat Ferrari in the lemond race The Irishman when is the Martin Scorsese Film. which is on Netflix? That you might have heard. It's three hours long. Gioja Rabbit is TYCO I. T's story about a World War Two to that is the one with the where he plays a an imaginary Hitler. If you've heard a joker of course Joaquin Phoenix as the comic book character. Sort of little women which is little women you know Little Women Louisa May alcott and book adapted by Greta. GERWIG marriage story which is Noah Baumbach. Big divorce film with Adam driver and also Scarlett Johansson nineteen seventeen which is about two young men in World War One cent. On a very dangerous mission started by Sam Mendez once upon a time in Hollywood Hollywood. Is Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Quentin Tarantino's story about the Hollywood of the very late nineteen sixties and parasite which is Bongino Jin. Ho's Really Fascinating story about two families who come together in a very unexpected way Glenn Gimme a quick will win. Should win on best picture. I'd be happiest with parasite movie that just gets better and better. The more you think about it I'd be okay with little women or once upon a time like movies I'd be a little disappointed if it was Ford versus Ferrari for reasons you can hear more about in the full episode and if it is the joker I'll scream into a pillow Because I kinda hated that movie the oddsmakers have nineteen seventeen winning which is surprising to me. Because I like that movie but the best picture of the year really. It's Oscars sensitive from war movie and it's kind of a traditional Hollywood movie in some ways but then at the same time. It has the kind of showy element of having the you know. Made to look like one shot. I I will just go next and say I would pick parasite and you know. I'm going to stick with will win parasite because the last time. I had a tingling feeling that it was going to being upset. It was moonlight backed off at the last minute. So did the telecom. I robbed myself of an opportunity to look smarter than I am. So I'm going to say will win. Parasites should win parasite. I'm okay with nineteen seventeen. I think there is some lovely filmmaking there. I admire fire the accomplishment of it Bob. What do you think will win and should win? I think one thousand nine hundred will win because it's just everything seems to be driving that way it didn't start out that way. What's interesting sting is at the front runners? Initially were supposed to be Once upon a time in Hollywood and the two from from net flicks Irish marriage. I'm sorry Mayor Story and those have kind of disappeared from the conversation. I think it's safe to say none of those have a real strong shot anymore. I would love to see parasite win. Yeah Stephen Anything. I'm in somewhat of the same boat. I would be thrilled of parasite one I would be thrilled if a little women one. I love that movie so so much. I went on record in our resolutions and predictions show. I predicted addicted. That once upon a time in Hollywood was going to win best picture. It seemed like everything was coming together for The Oscars love movies about the magic of movie. Making it is is a movie about old Hollywood. You know who else is old Hollywood. Everyone who votes for the and so I felt so much like and also Quentin Tarantino. Not No he is an Oscars favourite but he typically get's nudged over two screenplay and then doesn't win best picture best director so I really felt like he had an enormous amount of momentum going going in but I agree that nine hundred seventeen seems to have kind of swooped in and picked it up and I. I really liked that movie a lot. I admire that movie a lot. I would be perfectly content content and satisfied to have it win best picture but this time next year it will take me thirty to forty five seconds to remember what won best picture unless it's parasite unless it's it's parasites will be talking about it for decades. Well I think I wrote about this a little bit if you subscribe to our newsletter which is at NPR dot org slash pop culture newsletter. I wrote about this last week but I do think there's a chance that will be parasite partly because the opening up of the best picture category. which originally was talked about as a way to bring? In kind of popular blockbusters that are also of quality. Got A lot of talk about the dark knight and things like that but it's actually done is bring in more smaller films and foreign right language films so eventually it's GonNa Happen. That one of them is GonNa win. Might as well be this one. I think it might be this year. I think people just like that movie. Yeah and the fact that the US preferential voting for this cat this particular story. COMP look it's way too complicated to get into here but basically what it means is if people liked parasite recite for example enough to what it number one number two or number three. It's got a better than average chance or second. Choices have a have a better than average less polarizing films. Do you better than the ones that everybody likes. Even if it's not their favorite

(Day Of Reckoning) For Emmanuel Macron

"Let's start with lemond which obviously has been covering the French strikes just discussing as you were just discussing exactly and it's really cooling time on macron if he gets this wrong it's calling it the hour of truth this day of reckoning. They're really suggesting that if you mishandles his than it could be over for him. Does Lamont Avenue Bright Ideas. About how president macron chrome should be handling this not like he handled the delays on. I think seems to be the essence but some people are saying that some people put my him for pushing through reforms that something can necessary even if they are in popular But it's also saying you know we have no end to these strikes insight and it's going paralyze the country so there's a lot of potential of this government Islam though basically saying that the way from macron to handle this is just to give into the demonstrators and not not reform. Anything is Lamont at least acknowledging that there is a problem here that needs to be addressed. It is it's not going far to sort of say what the solution would be. But it's it certainly sesame saying that there is something that needs to be addressed but also there's a lot of anger that will also be addressed one way or another in the coming months

A Look at Who Is Affected by Trump’s Shift in Syria

"And we're going to hear more it now about the president's shift in policy on Syria the shift is that US forces in northern Syria will stand aside while Turkey launches an offensive across the border president trump says it's time to let others step up and take responsibility for security in the region as we just heard there many critics who say the move amounts to the U. S. abandoning its Kurdish allies allies who have been key in the fight against ISIS what's not in dispute is that this is happening today US troops began pulling back from posts in northern Syria to talk about why this matters and what might come next I want to bring in Gail Samakh LeMond she's adjunct fellow at the council on foreign relations she has traveled to Syria six times in the last two years welcome great to join you which begin by describing this corner of Syria what does it look like what has been the relationship between the US forces base there and Kurdish fighters what you see on the ground in northern Syria is really fragile very much endangered but very real fight for normalcy right restaurants cafes little people going to school every day and every line including upper Fremont nor I I interview to rock a few months back for the third time said to me we just want to know what tomorrow will bring because we really want to build today hi this really is about the epicenter of the fight against extremism and the local folks on the ground who are doing the work and the US has been the odds like presence that has held this thing together with you also like prisons what do you mean like man behind the curtain type thing yes so no one sees the Americans on the ground I think so many people bring the lands of Iraq or Afghanistan to the discussion about Syria but when you were on the ground in northern Syria Mary Louise you'll never see the Americans so you see this very real stability you know that is facing peril from all kinds of corners that has been kept in place by local forces who have sat under this invisible blanket of American presence no that statement from the White House makes reference to many captured ISIS fighters for being held in detention facilities are families of those fighters being held in camps around the region can you describe what are the current conditions for those people in these facilities and and what might the implications of this White House announcement U. S. backed forces have held several thousand ISIS fighters of many of whom their home countries will not take back and have stripped of citizenship and these local forces also are holding more than sixty thousand ISIS family members they were prepared during the end of the ISIS fight for maybe twenty to thirty thousand and at the end it turned out to be more than sixty thousand basically this you know United Nations of isis is what I saw when I visited all whole camp in may and what I mean what do they look like what are the conditions there so is there a sprawling camp that was clearly never intended to hold as many people as it held now and you have a group of folks who fought ISIS who have now been asked to hold to care for to feed to provide sanitation for the families and children of ISIS fighters and they've willingly done so because the Americans have asked them to while pleading for resources to make sure that they can do so adequately so what might be the impact of this latest announcement from for the president the White House it's just focus on the women's so the wives of ISIS fighters they are by no means folks who all of whom have given up the Islamic state's ideology and in fact they would talk to people about how ISIS up would rise again so I think the fact that the U. S. backed forces are very worried they're going to have to take care of their own families instead of making sure that they can help figure out what to do with the ISIS families is something we're going to contend with now the US spec forces you're referring to the STF the Syrian defense forces you you talk to the head of those forces today this was a commander Muslim ideas that right I spoke with the STF and I had this morning and you know what he said was listed you know until as recently as yesterday we've been working with the Americans on a security mechanism to answer all of Turkey security concerns what happens next for us is that we will have to turn away from the ISIS fight to protect our own home we don't want that we know the Americans don't want that and we are ready to figure out what we could do to avoid this but if we have to we will fight I want to push you on what this could mean for ISIS not families of fighters left behind in in camps but whether this opens the door if the US has reduced presence in this part of Syria does not open the door for ISIS to come back and grow stronger everyone is waiting to see what this decision will mean in terms of what it looks like on the ground I think the big feeling that is held across the board is that the Islamic state benefits from a vacuum it benefits from chaos I think of this mom who fled rock eight and a half months pregnant who I've been following her story for the last two years and when I saw her in may she said please tell the Americans we will fight for our own future we just need a shot its stability and I think that is what this house like American presence has been able to create and it's been able to help moms like that who has been fighting their own front line war against the Islamic state you keep that fight and

You got started excellent very very hard to find the money then it's almost impulsive is almost impossible to do something about now unless unless you just have huge sums of money you can pour in so when you look at how much three costs to go vast you know you need a seven figure. Sum suspend overall to to have any chance of making that work yet. It's it's always been like that it. It's expensive sport. It costs a lot of money but the best drivers <hes> all at that time and at this time now they always seemed to babe. There's always someone that that they attract interest of and they are willing to help them so if you if you are if you are a top level driver over at the very very top then normally if you get one or two chances one chance than you show them. The results and you have someone who's interested to help you. We see there's this example other drivers whose made it thanks to their. Thanks to the results that they've been there. Maybe not always had a big becker with them. Not sorry right the l. posted this these days. There are more official. It was a good car but the <unk> power wise. We were quite slow. Maybe too much aero to that too much downforce emphasis in the car or a little bit too big maybe not engine but it was really good at some circuits which was more technical and that's i think we were like fifteen case down in on top speed and but <hes> staying with pro drive before i did that with all we did a five mile away del that for for deteriorate it calls and it was a really good car and so we did some races in the f._a._a. So pro drive did a really good job of developing that car and race arrested at lemond twice as well.
