"Sources telling Bloomberg news just this week that Singapore has expanded a criminal probe into scandal-plagued. One MD be include Goldman Sachs police had been examining Goldman's relationship with the Malaysian state investment company since at least late twenty seventeen but until recently from local unit itself wasn't a focus of any investigation. And that's really where this story gets that much more interesting, and it becomes a story. Not just about a fund in Asia, not just about one investment Bank. But about the legacy of one of the best known bankers on wall. She wanted best known CEOs on Wall Street, the Bank itself, and it's really entered into the Wall Street zeitgeist says they say max Abelson chronicles all of that for us on a daily basis. He's here with us. So max. Remind us what this scandal has its roots in. Well, this scandal has everything it's I would not have fought a couple years ago. When I first read about Tim Leissner, sort of the Stargell and banker we're gonna talk about him in a bit. I I heard about about him a couple years ago. I would not have thought we'd be sitting at this table. As blankfein exits the firm talking about this like huge scandal. That's absolutely dented his reputation on Wall Street. This is I mean, it's some heavy stuff. It's a story as you say about Malaysia and investment banking and alleged bribery. But it's also about the things that we care about the most Europe, Bloomberg news is money and power. He readily does get down to how Wall Street makes money and how people with power wheeled it. And we want to get into that. But let's take a step back and remind everybody about this fun. I mean, governments right often raise investment funds. So this is not a surprise or unusual but tells about this fund and the origins of it. Yes. Absolutely. So I mean, we can even go a step further back and just talk about how Goldman Sachs Lloyd Blake. Find says said we need to be golden Sachs in more places. And as the prime minister, former prime minister of Malaysia was rising to power Tim laser who is young handsome German banker married to a former model apparently very quite likable teased as Dr license because apparently he had a PHD from us sort of a relatively would like fly by night school. We think. License was rising in Asia. And specifically in Malaysia making friends with billionaires sort of getting on deals at the same time that Najeib was rising in the country as the prime minister, basically said to Goldman. He essentially gave the thumbs up to sort of become a more powerful wall. She entity in Malaysia essentially, the equivalent of the SEC saying you can operate here. And as that happened, Tim listeners through these connections. And here's where the famous Jolo comes in the God. Hey state fund known as one MD to give them a ton of money to raise bonds so to give Goldman exactly so one indeed raised six and a half billion dollars for the sovereign fund. Goldman got six hundred million dollars. They made six hundred million dollars, which is a lot more than you normally make from deal like this to help help the fundraise money. And that's where all the trouble starts. So what does it get more fees than than than is typical? Well, it's Goldman would say that it's more than just fees. It's also like things like commissions. But that's the rub right there. Tim Leister has already who who by the way to my isn't like some. Random guy. Tim Russia was a partner Goldman Sachs. Right. He has told the federal government. He's pled guilty to bribery charges. And he has basically said that this was a bribery scheme and that they were kicking back money. I mean, they're amazing details like there's these notes that license sent I think he said we need to bake some cakes for and I think I don't hold me to this. I think it might have been for new gbs wife. But in other words, they were notes flying back and forth about about bribes. I have talked not to sort of Wall Street critics, but two former partners of the Bank former partners some of them from the management committee of Goldman Sachs said like that was too much money, right? Goldman Sachs must have known that. Something was weird when they make more than half a billion dollars off of a relatively plain bond deal. Goldman will come back and say, well, it wasn't all that plane. Well, this is where it starts to get interesting. I feel like Jason right? And I think this is what we're trying to find out max. Right. Is kind of how how high does it? Go up kind of the executive chain chain excuse me in terms of knowing what was going on right, especially when you say Lloyd, blankfein specifically said we wanna be global. We wanna be Goldman more places. Look, I mean talk about SRI. Dr he was the first report that Lloyd blankfein was in a meaning with Jolo in. I wanna see two thousand nine if I'm remembering cut, the I think Lloyd blankfein and Jolo also attend to meeting together in two thousand twelve and look here touches, bacteria reminders is. So first of all one one fun thing about the story as long as you're not Goldman Sachs is that it's just kind of crazy story at every turn their sort of it. It's it's like, it's as you say it sounds like a Netflix series. But it's also it sounds like opera this very operatic about it. So Jolo was a came from nowhere. He was friends with a lot of celebrities. He partied with Leo DiCaprio. He bought a piano for supermodel. I want to say the piano is made of crystal. I think. He was a guy who was extremely adept at connections. And he was the guy in between the golden banker Tim licensing and the prime minister of Malaysia Najib and allegedly. He basically absconded with I think billions of dollars. He in one guy. I think the first chunk was hundreds of millions of dollars. But I mean Jolo is now on the run he is a fugitive from US Justice. If I'm remembering correctly, he's in China. He denies wrongdoing. But he is the key piece here he was the I think it's fair to say he's the alleged mastermind of essentially, a one is the biggest kleptocracy cases on record. We don't know where he is. But. It doesn't look good to have him walk into a Wall Street headquarters, and you wrote about two mice neuro long time ago. It's really only been in the past few months and oddly enough during this management transition at Goldman Sachs where blankfein is stepping aside. David Solomon becomes the CEO that this scandal really comes back in force. And we see it reaching the highest levels talk about Blang finds role in that's such an important point. Look at the end of the day, you know, Goldman such a powerful and such a smart and such a lucrative Bank. I mean, I feel even it's even starches. Critics have to give them that. They find themselves in trouble every few years. I for whatever reason in Libya. Remember when they made they were working. I think what's Qaddafi or Kadhafi's family in Libya in Greece. Remember, they were accused of sort of helping Greek Greek debts be hidden, you know, people get mad, but then the anger kind of dies away, even in the financial crisis. You know, they had to pay a lot of money for advocates. Remember that notorious deal, but look I mean, do people. Talking about advocates for five years. They really didn't know anger rises and then falls away, and what's happening here. Really does feel for the first time in a decade like something different. And timing is one of the reasons why Lloyd blankfein only a few months ago said into his colleagues, look, you know, when things are good. You don't want to leave. And when things are bad, you can't leave and he said, but you know, things are good now, I'm not in the mood to go. But it feels like the right time. That's what his memo said only only a couple months ago. And now it's fair to say things things are going wrong. This is this is what you if you're Lloyd blankfein. This is what you do not want. You have his his own fellow partners in this case. Former partners are sort of questioning what's interesting is the talk about it. Not as like this sort of funny soap opera in Malaysia they seem to talk about. It is something that has to do with New York. How high you know, did the involvement go what was the reservations? Why reservations it can no word is is this symptomatic of the way Goldman has made record profits of. Years. Those questions seem to be coming from inside the house, and that's got to be very nerve wracking and outside the house. You have US regulators. Prosecutors you have the continuing to kind of ramp up their investigations into gold, and what happened if Goldman Sachs can can end up paying five hundred fifty million dollars which remember that was a record fine to the SEC over advocates. And that's all that happens. Oh my goodness. I think Lloyd blankfein will be so happy unless not forget, by the way. Boy, blankfein successor is a man named David. Solomon, David Solomon comes from investment banking co head of global investment banking when this happened. So I think there's nervousness. This not only will caller Ludlum finds entire legacy. And when you look at by the way, the golden stock price from when he started to where it is. Now, it doesn't look fantastic. I think the SNP beats said salsa questions about David Solomon. I think that people are nervous that this. He starting his tenure in such an ugly way. Goldman Sachs is the single worst performing stocks in the Dow this year, and that's really. Setting, but it could be potentially more upsetting. If the DOJ doesn't want to just golden pay five hundred fifty million dollars again. And then move on. How does it feel to you from a I'm going to use the Tom Keene word zeitgeist perspective? First of all, I love, Tom. And I love the words. But you know, I think it's important to remember at the end of the day Wall Street executives, or you know, what honestly even Obama and the Obama administration would I think would just simply say, look, we're laws broken not that we could find or at least not that we could effectively prosecute. We couldn't find Jason. But Jason stand and get a jury to find him guilty of crimes, although I'm sure Jason's not guilty of any any major. Thank you for that. But. Now, though. This is different. Now ten years after it. Sure. No. It doesn't look like we now know Tim Wieser has pleaded guilty. I read the court transcripts. It's very intense. What he says is that what he was doing was in keeping with the culture of Goldman Sachs. He says that he wasn't some exception to the rule. He makes it sound. Like this was the rule, and if you're golden those are the words, you do not want to hear Samak's was Goldman say about all of this. Goldman Sachs has said the hallway through that if some sort of rogue impli, they're going to vigorously contest all the chargers. And when we asked shakes Goldman Sachs spokesman for a comment he said, he said, look, blankfein just got a standing o from other corporate executives at a lunch from a crowd. That includes Mike Bloomberg who owns found, Bloomberg LP. And he says that's more meaningful than backbiting and second guessing from former employees so much to keep an eye on max Abelson. Thanks so much for bringing us up today. Pleasure that wraps up the first. Our of the weekend edition of Bloomberg BusinessWeek from Bloomberg radio. I'm Carol Massar. And I'm Jason Kelly. Plenty for you in our next hour. We look at Amazon we look at lift an Uber. Great rivalry there. And it's the good business issue, Carol..
