"Gutierrez spoke as a separate analyst for the month published Friday by Leipzig University climate scientist Karsten Hausstein. Estimated July could possibly finish 0 2 degrees Celsius warmer than the 2019 record these records are a there was one reported one of my favorite networks. The reporter said. It's the hottest recorded temperature in recorded history. that has been predicted not only would that make it the warmest month On on record but potentially in thousands of that tens of thousands of years. How would you the idea. foggiest May have to go back to warm conditions. And you If I could just question one of them including ABC News people what do you what is with you in this scam. But since paleo temperature records do not provide high enough temporal resolution. We cannot say there was certainty that this July hasn't been hotter during the peak of the current interglacial period. We just don't know so we assume it is. That's it. This is not the first time the US has warned the world. Whatever happened the good

"Is going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. So this is normal. It happens to almost everyone even people without prostate swimming. And it's because nature can be unkind. So there is a hormone that you put out called antidiuretic hormone. And diuretic diuresis means that you urinate. If it's antidiuretic, then you don't urinate. And when you are younger, that hormone works at night, much more than during the day. And as you are older, there's a flip. So you're up more times at night. That being said, it's not always normal. So it should be checked out to see what's going on and a lot of times the question is, did you get up and then go to the bathroom? Because you were awake, or did you need to go to the bathroom, and that's why you woke up. So that's an important question to try and figure out. But there are also a number of things that you can do in terms of when you drink your fluids, what you do before you go to bed. If your legs are swollen, what medications you're taking, that could be the reason that you're up as many times a night as you are. So those are just a couple of examples. You mentioned the ageism before it's an unfortunate reality and some people even encounter it with their healthcare providers. What would you recommend older adults look for and look out for? If they're looking for a new doctor. Well, you know, looking for a new doctor is common as you get older, you outlive your doctors. So it does become a realm. I think your gut feelings are a good place to start. So how do they speak to you? Are they condescending? Are they patronizing? If somebody is in the room with you, which oftentimes there is okay, are they talking to that person to study you? Are they talking to their computer instead of you? Okay? Are they not making eye contact with you? So I think those are all things that it's easy to realize when somebody is paying attention when they're not. The other thing I have people tell me a lot is that they feel like they're being blown off, okay? They're not being really listened to or

"You're exercising, you'll make more muscle and your strength will be better. If you do it when you're eating more protein. Okay? And then the other thing I would say is review your medications with your doctor. Because some medications cause fatigue. And then the last thing I guess I would say is don't be a couch potato. Something we all got into during the pandemic. And what happens is that we start losing muscle mass, and we lose more than you lose just by getting older. And that starts a bad cycle. Because then you have less energy than you do less than you eat less than, you know, it just goes around and around. So moving is another use it or lose it. You've got to get up and do something. Your point that I took away in your book on a staging is that we all age differently. And you give many examples in the book of changes that could be considered quote unquote normal aging. Versus red flags that would require attention. Could you give us a few examples of normal aging and red flags that might more attention? I certainly can. I think I would start by saying normal is a relative word, okay? So we think of normal as more than 50% of people it happens. And there are some things that happened more than 50% of older people that should be treated. Okay? So 90% of 90 year olds have high blood pressure. When I was in training, we didn't treat that. We thought we would cause strokes by lowering the blood pressure too much. What we found out when the studies were actually done is that we decreased strokes. We decreased heart attacks. We decreased heart failure, okay? So just because it's normal. There are normal memory problems. It's harder to learn new things. I think we all know that. You got to go over it more and more, you got to write it down somewhere. That's part of normal aging. You can't remember things. Do things in your head as well as you used to calculating tips. I mean, I'm so grateful now that when you go to the restaurant, they give you the tips, okay? So there are

And I oftentimes use the analogy to the Boston Marathon since we're talking about Boston. And there are people who win the Boston Marathon were 20 years old. And then that category and there are people in the 80 year old category. And they went. But there are times are quite different.

Heart health is brain health, so everything you do to keep your heart healthy, whether it's exercise, cholesterol, if it's appropriate for you, your blood pressure, your diet, a healthy diet. All of that will help you and help your brain as you get older. Use it or lose it is true, there's no question, whatever it is you like to do, but use it, and the other thing that we're starting to understand just how important it is is socializing. So the pandemic taught us a lot, unfortunately. And the studies that are coming out now suggest that people who are lonely or people who are alone and they're different. Lonelier people who would like to have more contact, all of those people, it's a risk factor for your life expectancy. It's as great as your heart health. Or whether you smoke or whether you're obese. Okay?

"People in your life of all generations, find a role model or two of older people who've done it the way you would like to do it. And start thinking about, and I think that's what this podcast is all about, what your old age will be like, and I don't mean just financially. The other thing I would say is start reconsidering what the term independence means. We think a teenager is they want to be independent that means they want to be away from their parents. They don't want to have anything to do with anybody. As you get older, I think, independence means having the ability to do the things you really want to do. Whatever it takes to get there. So I'm 72. I got hearing aids at 60 and boy am I happy? Because they allow me to participate in conversations that I was not participating in before. And, you know, I had great nieces saying to me, I don't think you heard that. And then I think made me feel much quote unquote older. Than I am. And then I feel. So I think those are and stay flexible. All right? We can get very, very rigid. And that can happen in our 20s. But as you get older, you have, we never have a lot of control over what happens, but we think we do. As you get older, you have less. And if you're flexible, you can figure out creative ways to deal with what comes your way. And have a meaningful and engaging life. So flexibility is so important. How can people cultivate a positive mindset about aging that can help us be adaptable? Well, I think the first thing is to recognize that if we're lucky, we're all going to get old. Okay. And so all of this negative press that we have about older people is really being prejudiced about our future selves. We're going to have to live with that.

"Welcome to another conversation on the retirement wisdom podcast. I'm your host, Joe Casey. There's a lot to manage and planning for retirement. You need to get your finances right. And you need to create a direction for your new life and retirement. But there's a key aspect that sometimes people put off or don't think or prepare enough about. That's getting older. Today we'll turn our attention to that. We're lucky enough to be getting older. Today, we'll get smarter about it. Internationally recognized in the field of geriatrics, doctor Roseanne, Leipzig, is a trailblazer and transforming the way we approach aging. Individually, and as a society. In her 40 plus year career, she has treated thousands of patients and trains hundreds of doctors and practitioners in all specialties of medicine. She is the Gerald and may Ellen Ritter professor and vice chair emerita of the Brookdale department of geriatrics and palliative medicine at the icahn school of medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Her new book on aging and insider's guide to the second half of life was published this year by Johns Hopkins University press. And it describes what to expect physically, psychologically, functionally and emotionally as you age. And what you can do to adapt to your new normal. Doctor Leipzig's lifelong commitment to older adults began with their grandmother. Who lived with her family for 8 years after developing cancer. Yet decided at age 75, she wanted to be on her own again. So she got an apartment where her closest friends lived and taught her how no matter how old you are or where you were living. There were ways to have an engaged and meaningful life. She also taught her to be open and flexible as things change in life. During her career, she's received numerous awards. She's been repeatedly named as one of the best doctors in America. America's top physicians, a New York Times super Doc, and one of New York magazine's top doctors for geriatric medicine. "Native manure and frankly before be joining us because we're going to be looking ahead to that big game in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday. It is Liverpool. Gates and Manchester United, but don't worry, Stevie, you can breathe for just a moment. Because first, we're going to talk about a big game in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund taking on Avi Leipzig a battle at the top of the table between two of the title rivals. We're going to pick it up in the 13th minute when Borussia Dortmund thought they had gone ahead through the man at the moment, Julian Brandt's but this one was called out for handball. Well, it's not lucky because it's a lovely little bowl through from barium. And there's no question that does just glance these right arm. Julian brunt there. Can complain. It does is a good finish, but it doesn't count. No, it does not. And so it went back to L nel and before that, we had seen a couple of chances from Christopher and Kung fu getting his first start of 2023. Here we see him take down Marco rice, receives a yellow for this. Should it have been a red LA? I think it's fortunate to stay on the field. It's a really bad talent. He just doesn't catch him cleanly enough, but the ball is nowhere near. He is in danger in the opponent. I think that it should have been a red car. Says a little bit. Well, we don't know what he said. But I'm sure he was just saying I'm sorry. I did not mean it. Then Michael rose gets this side of penalty. Easy decision for the referee. Good little run in behind. He's got past the keeper. Definitely clips him. Cassie's himself with his left foot and don't eat gauze. He steps up. Converts. He becomes the second all time goal scorer in the Dortmund history level with Mikhail's off. And apparently that's what that's perfect. Edinburgh, which definitely like that one. Soon enough, it was going to be two nil. It's a poor clearance foreign solo slide that puts it into the passive Android ten. He's hanging around top of 18 yard box, hits it straight into the ground, goes through a lot of bodies. Last week doesn't react on time by the time he sees the ball. It's too late. Tuna. We're going to see Marco rice far save out of blasphemy here. I mean, that was him. As soon as it left his foot, it looked but what I super the last second keeper gets his left hand up, tips it over the cross bar. We did see a much stronger Leipzig in the second half and they did get one on the board. The slaughter bank keeps everybody on the side as a ball is being played over at the top by schlager and one slaughter that keeps everybody on sight. He does have an opportunity to clear out the danger but he says, you know what? Let me double down. It goes between the legs of the slaughter bag onto the sliding male force. Lots of actors make up for his mistake by protecting his goalkeeper here. Yeah, it's good defendant. Gets back to back his goalkeeper off. And that ball looks gold bone then he gets his shoulder in the way and knocks it clear. The cars came after that, 5 Berg, very close here. It's a really clean volleys. The problem is here it's straight out Alexander Meyer. Anywhere to the side is a goal, it's a really well run of the goalkeeper. And so Borussia Dortmund held on and are now perfect in all competitions in 2023, that's ten games in total, 8 in the Bundesliga, archer and tot was pitchside for us. He spoke to Ed in tereza after the game. How did that feel for you when the final whistle went today? Great. Very simple. It was a very important win for us. It was a very good first half. We played some really good stuff in the first half. And in the second half, it was about defending. And we did it very passionate.

"An eye from ruthless, hungry, circle wagons inevitable march to victory to, wow, they are inconsistent. They are mortal and it will drive pep crazy that this was the third time this season, his team of drop points to an opponent who managed just one effort on target. It's amazing Steve Cooper knows exactly who his team are. He knows exactly who they are. He knows exactly what they are. He knows exactly how to deploy that. It's just, you know, in any sport, understanding your own percentages, understanding your own ability, the shots you can hit, the shots you can't hit so important. Pep, how does he know what his team are? Like he's got so many incredible pieces. They can be so dominant, even during this game, they can just be so dominant at times and fail to score how can his brain compute that. You know, not only ourselves, but every pundit in football just goes through these incredible like moves. Think 24 games into Manchester City season, we've changed our minds so many times about who they are and what they're like. How does pep deal with it? Part of it is like you and his cupboard in the morning and you see so many avant garde pieces of clothing in there. Sweaters with hoods on hoods with sweaters attach just can't go various with washes. I mean, if he can work out just how the hell to get dressed in the morning that man. I mean, this flies are in just different places, but he did take something fascinating before this game that I'm actually thinking about both questions. No, you know, he doesn't just like the fly whereas down below. No, why would you have it there when you can have it up your ass crack? I have a notice there. I'll have a closer look at how he picks his team. He said before this game, he said, you know, I'm going to people are knocking me for making crazy tactical decisions, but he wakes up in the middle of the night and thinking of his first team. And he says, yeah, poor guy can't work out where his flyer. So we know what's going to happen there. Full of click in the morning. Why is my fly over my left nipple? I don't even know anymore. But the thing is, he said, if 89% of my opponent managers can work out what my team is, I'm not going to go with that team. And that is, that is the kind of reason to talk about arsenal. A couple of seasons ago, just being like a gentleman who had had his penis severed in a terrible accident. I can't remember how or why. And the newspaper proudly wrote that he'd had his penis attached to his arm. And I think the way I'm thinking about that now, but I think believe that for teams he won on penis, that's when the fly goes on the sleeve. But the irony of not that story, but what you were saying before is that do you think Steve Cooper is worrying about who Pep Guardiola is going to select and put in his team. He's not because he knows that whichever 11 he puts out there are going to be unbelievable, but he's just going to have to defend like banshees for 87 minutes and try and steal a half chance at the end. Maybe overthinking this a little bit. I can't think of anything other than invisible asteroids and on penises now. I can't remember where that any listener can remember about the aunt penis. That's a title for this vid on YouTube. So what an incredible game man city now two points behind arsenal, a game in hand, what an unbelievable finish we have to this Premier League season. And there may be roger, a third team in it, Everton. No, but man united. They beat Leicester three nil, a game that continued to demonstrate the impact a tactical visionary can have at a football club when installed as manager. And Eric ten Hager is doing pretty well also. His united ride the hot hand of Marcus Rashford. Wow. Lord rashford, who continues to treat the Premier League with the casual dominance, normally reserved for the NBA skills contest. He scored twice in this one to bring his post World Cup tally to 16 goals in 17 games, Jadon Sancho added a third beautiful goal in united continued flying. 5 points behind arsenal. Now just three points behind city. Off the field, united are a fire with takeover talks and choose your own moral adventure decisions to be made on it. They are thriving a humdinger of a game Leicester, slapped 8 goals in the last two games, opened up a tired united who had played a 65 hours earlier in Barcelona and were vulnerable down the right side over and over and over Harvey Barnes slipping through on David de Gea who slopped his shot away the relatively and we got a credit to hey I was thinking this was his a 180th clean sheet on the day a club record of tying the club record of Schmeichel and the hey is so immense so much focus over so many games hard to imagine what it must be like to be an elite goalkeeper for that long kind of like living your life and the water with all that pressure. But less the creative constant danger could have been three nil up but my lord you know he did against a runa play first shot and all they needed to assert themselves fast turn the ball over at the halfway line and then this level mistake like that can be punished by clinical teams but the way united quickly were at the board. David Bruno, that outside of the foot, that scoop into space. That was Picasso football. Yeah, I mean, he was outstanding throughout this entire throughout this entire game and just performances all over the field. A manager in so focused. I love ten hawk on the sideline. He's just so focused on the game at hand and what's going on in each individual matchup. He's coaching the entire team. He's coaching zones. He's coaching individual players. Just working so hard. What he has done to resuscitate Marcus Rashford, you just knew when it was him running in on goal. Mortal strike is he was not going to mess that he'd himself rifled clinically past Danny ward like Premier League Barry pepper and David. This was so much more than just a 540° jam, 7 consecutive league games at Old Trafford he scored. He touched his temples and closed his eyes in celebration so serene who had bust through in his career was heralded as a local wonder but then crashed was pilloried is now soaring again. What must he be feeling? I did wonder, you know, I wonder what can I do in my own life like Marcus Rashford scores goals and the only thing I could think of was drink beers, but he is both proof that good things happen to great people, but what he's doing, what we're witnessing right now, it's real sustained sporting greatness. It's a movie script. A young man who joined Manchester United at the age of 7. At the age of 7 years old, he joined that team, and everything he's been through since he's been there both. From a footballing perspective from a non footballing perspective and to watch him have his moment right now, this post World Cup form, vein of form that he's in, playing like honestly one of the best players in the world right now. It is just so wonderful to watch. You did it again because Leicester continued to have almost all the chances, but the second he was sprung beyond the Leicester offside trap killed the game off. Fred that played him in 24 goals on this season. Marcus is chasing Holland like almost it's like watching the toys and the large cocky Nordic hair. Bruno quickly set Sancho up for assumptions third incredible to see Jaden also now returning it to his confidence of old and Old Trafford

For this spirit, we have a company starting work with a new project. It's very neat. This moment, it's a paperwork. We have to think about future. We have to make contact with all aviation factors, product like Boeing Airbus and asking this aviation monster to help us with build Nubia. After all, we will know we will know after project will complete. We will know how to how much does it cost really. It's a very important question because many, many different things. Before a few years ago, thinking two 100 million 250 million, this spring, I see 800 million, but somebody say 3 million 3 billion exactly how. And after that, we will try to find a try to start with investigation project to involve all people who interesting aviation, innovation, politics, businessmen, or actors like I know actors just aviator movies.

I've seen the reception that you've got from your teammates from the fans from your coaches. Why do you think that stereotype is still holding. Volunteered in hospitals e. r. during the pandemic this is called a pro social behavior caregiving group coordination conflict resolution. Sharing humans engage in these types of behaviors. All the time we've learned but it's a large part of the reason we succeeded as a species but a major question remains in science. A we the only species who do this one of our closest relatives chimpanzees have long been studied for signs of this their genetic. Similarities could help us tease out. The evolutionary trajectory of the desire to selflessly. Help others sir. For research has provided mixed results on the question studies of these animals in the wild and captivity seem to come to different conclusions. Some studies show the chimps cooperatively hunt share food and console each other but one highly cited study. Come to a very different conclusion. He said chimpanzees are indifferent to the welfare of others. The study use what's called a pro social choice. Test controlled lab experiment which in pansies in enclosures were given two options. Push a button to give fruit to themselves. Who push the button to give food to themselves and apartment chimp. If they chose the latter it was seen as a pro social behavior in that study chimps showed no special preferences for feeding themselves and a friend overfeeding just themselves into new research and a remote juice fountain in started but in a concrete fountain into the chimpanzees outdoor enclosures. The fountain was then hooked up to a large container of juice placed outside of the enclosure when an individual pushes the button. It releases juice from the fountain however since the button and fountain are approximately five meters apart. The individual pushing cannot directly drink from the fountain and if any other chimpanzees are at the fountain when the button is pushed they and not the pusher will be able to drink the juice that sarah detroit at the max planck institute for evolutionary anthropology leipzig compared to previous controlled lab based experiments. The setup for this was very naturalistic and detroit says chimpanzees were able to interact with a fountain in this social groups. Janocko fuel itself is with us yet. Thank goodness we still have a title race. Just thank goodness to halftime. There was so many analyzes marker also sorting out gladbach. There will be calm now before he takes over. And then livesey made the bundesliga excited for two minutes with the irony at halftime. But thank god. Thank god for everybody. Neutral love love the bundesliga. There was fantastic. Second half of our show and they slowly came back. Glad back more tired had some chances on contracts but policy and kuku and solo there so many attackers. It's lives. You haven't score enough goals after chicken and van left them after last season but they produce tonight and we haven't excitement we have. We have a tight race in germany. Dan could you imagine. It's unbelievable because then you compare yourself with the best goal Of all time and yes you could say the by a munich was fantastic. But you can say the same about this team. I mean we are talking about whole on emba- pay silva or were all these goalscoring sensations around europe the moment but levin dose gays to complete striker but the the goal getter part of his game is unbelievable to he's hungry and passionate for goals is unbelievable and you saw the way to the goals. Today you had a you finally got. Thomas miller on to fourteen seconds to make an assist for him. I just turned around. He knows all the time where where he is on the full patriots and if he beats the record i still doubted but he's getting closer meanwhile bruce feldman turning on in the second half in proved to be a comfortable win in the end. I'll tell you what twenty twenty one jaden sanitary. It's very different than twenty. Two thousand nine hundred and sounds like christmas press the reset. Button is incredible. I'm not sorry. Putting in northern region after solo scored for for leipzig later tonight. But but then allen all on one against one against goalkeeper typically get up. We'll try himself. Just give it the ball away. And i think that sums up that door at the moment. They won three games in a row. Intense being under pressure as being a lame duck after the appointment of mark but they are back on track another only three points behind eintracht frankfurt for that very very valuable champions league place for they make it. Yeah yes. I think they will. Because i don't think well eleven games eintracht frankfurt had and with no losses i winston role. Then losing it to to bremen and as long as they can keep on winning these kind of games which has been difficult for them. They're lower teams like being felt today. They will keep on doing it but mind you next game. It's frankfurt against got. That could be a frankford. Win on there and Munich and then we can have that six points again. Because volts berg are winning games just like behind everybody under the radar of everybody of body so they could end up taking place in the bundesliga

Can Liverpool Snap Their Slump?
"Liverpool coming off a result midweek in the champions league thought when we focus on their league form not so great. They've lost three straight for merely outscored eight to two in those matches. Stevie the league form not good but can we throw it out the window based on what you saw. Mid week. Leipzig to be honest. I'm gonna base on scene from evan. Rather than what. I've seen from liverpool. I think we know liverpool. Golden played good football. Hopefully they're going to create. The question is what we take chances. And kinda and that's been their mantra. I think this is over. Evan up until i go a bed the smaller and looked and looked to see what had been said for months. You'll autobahn and use a kind of changed my opinion because i was very comfortable when i went to bed. Before the fact that culvert loons black. You've got allenbach. You got hamas who. I think we'll play as well. So they've kind of a as well as liverpool getting a little bit of a kick from winning against light shake evans going to get a little spot as well for most three at the same time. I don't think is going to be an awful thing. Liverpool will take it a business. You mentioned what carlo ancelotti said. You're in club downplayed this earlier but the reverse fixture of this is where virgil van. Dyke got hurt. We'll liverpool's players be thinking about that. Is that at all a factor in this absolutely not liverpool of other things to worry about right now with those vendettas. And when you stop doing that that affects your game when you start worrying about getting a kick it somebody or gone around and tried to get one on the that's going to affect you as you said liverpool too many other problems where they can. They can do things so i i don't think will have any whatsoever correct. Speaking those other liverpool problems basically been a coin flip over the last couple of months which liverpool we get and it's not really between good and bad. it's between feast and famine and look. There's a clear fight for the top four here between a few teams what one of which up until a couple of games ago look it might be able to make still be but clearly live for sure. I'm not going to catch. Set has been questioned whether anybody will catch them but settling from where pearl are so. There's a clear fight for the top. Four and i think they'll be buoyed by their performance and mid week but i'm with stevia. Initially islanders probably going combat but he's lacking much shoppers. Rodriguez is a talent. But he's not particularly away from home. A place like lever put and going to get the ball here because everton do that home in a way. They often the lawyers for as what liver poke can do with an ev. You know the such a hard team to read it. Belet lasted in a sense. Have lost some crazy games as she are still up there. Everyone had i think the three games in hand up until a week or ten days ago and then they lost home to fill them the loss home to set these kind of expected. The hong end then brushed aside. But i could see lever. Pull getting a result here purely going to dominate the game. And i think eventually it will break down. Of course they're gonna watch learn these pace and behind running the johnson. That's a weak point for liverpool at the moment. But i just feel with us. Top four limited as real. Fight that lever pill get the job done here and could run together to get themselves in their shock. Everton haven't beaten liverpool since two thousand ten have one at anfield since one thousand nine hundred ninety nine. This feels like as good a chance chances. They're going to get ride. No all records falling as far as liverpool is concerned in particular over recent weeks. That format downfield. Now i'm different from the voice. I'm sitting around the fence but leaning everton. I just feel as good. A result was against rb leipzig. Maybe a little bit expected especially given i felt. I thought i'd be like coming into this. A little bit light up front and maybe not threatening liverpool anywhere near as much as you would thought but with covid louis coming back. In particular that make centre-half paramount liverpool will be relying on on henderson. I just feel about their goals for forever time here and as a see i'm sitting on the inside but leading everton i just don't see a liverpool win.

How you doing, buddy? Good man. Good to hear from you. Yeah, that changed my sleep around a squeeze Your showing, but always work, You know, working. Who knows one of these? Yeah, Um The thing with dream on that he's neglecting to mention Is with Harden. Cousins and war buried him. His teammates buried him for what he did. So he didn't even mention it that these players that buried hardened for what he did. In this atmosphere. What's going on with the onus is to protect their investments. They still pay the player. This whole thing was brought on by the players not wanting to go to teams the whole buyout at the end of the year, teams running the playoff teams to win and it Z. You know, it's still the product for the fans. What if I can't on a positive note? How about those Knicks again? Well, what an effort last night all over the place the whole team Unbelievable. South. It is a pleasure to watch two things first on Draymond green. You're right, and I did talk about that in the open, how he's talking about the players. Oh, poor players, the league need to do a better job of taking care of them. And meanwhile, the players were the ones who were ripping James Harden in that particular instance Anyway. I mean, we could go on on about that. But yes. What the Knicks dug. It is Look this team and I was thinking about this yesterday. The last time I had this much fun investing into an actual Nick's team, they play like a team. There are defined roles. They play position basketball, You know which guy is doing? What They do their jobs. Well, they play hard. They give Max effort night in night out whether they win or not, I mean, that's a different story. How the shots fall who knows last night a little too many threes, but The last time I felt like this about the next team was before the Carmelo Anthony trade when they had Stottlemeyer, Colin Ari Raymond Felton. They were building a young team and they were building toward something. That's how I feel what this group and this group I think, is even better. Then that one Woz Yeah. You know in this team loves playing together. You see the guys running off You see the end of the night when they're interviewing Randall, the three or four guys around there, saying this guy is an old store, and they're running also Time out the common outage. I mean, it's It's just like after everything we've watched for, like so many years. It's just a pleasure to watch as I place so I sent February. It is a big month. These games coming up. And in my condition 17 for 34 every night by like last night, But just the help like Norman's no. Well with the defense last night, you know Sunday against Houston, they turned a 10 point game into a 17 point game and who would ever sorted? Would be on defense with Julius Randle chasing out on a three point shooter, forcing him to come inside and have a shot blocked or a ball stolen. I mean, they're just going that extra mile, which you know As fans We love watching. It's a pleasure to joy and How about typical? You think that Fizdale gets a job ever again after what typical is doing right now? Embarrassment? You know the Knicks and thank you for the call Doug. We appreciate listening always. Ah, joy to talk to you here. The Knicks made the mistake the last several times while they were trying to hire guys who were gonna War top players here. They didn't hire David Fizdale because they thought he was the best coach. They hired Fizdale because of his relationship with Wade and LeBron and so on, and all those players And they were hoping to get those guys here to play for right here. I should say New York They were hoping to get those guys to the Knicks in New York to play for them. Or to play for him. It didn't work out like that. This time around, Leon Rose deserved it on a credit because he hired I don't know what an idea the best coach in Tom Thibodeau. They should've hired Tom Thibodeau 10 years ago. He always wanted to be with the next and he's a great coach. But you touched on the biggest point, and I know fans across the league loved the three pointers was on him out and love the offense. And who did you see what the Nets did all they hit 27 threes? 27 47 with a score, you know, 130 points or whatever it is that the Nets had last night 136 to be exact. But the thing that in the next hit their own fair share of threes last night 17 of 34. You're right. That's not going to be the norm. Those shots. They want you like that. They can't you 34 threes and sustained success. But what they can do is the defense and everybody's talking about Randall in the offense and the threes. But the defense the fact that their star their leader plays hard, both ends of the floor. They haven't had that. Carmela didn't do that. Satyam are didn't do that. Nick's Haven't had that in years. I mean, maybe there I say going back to even Patrick Ewing was the last star of the team to play hard at both ends of the floor. Every possession. That's what you love about.

Tens of thousands of people rally against Lukashenko in Belarus
"Where Can Belarus President Turn Now? Thousands of people were back on the streets protesting this weekend still angry at what they believe was a rigged presidential election President Lukashenko who claimed as he returned to power with an eighty percent approval rate responded by flying over the protesters wearing riot gear with a rifle slung from his shoulder. Well, drained over is L. Editor of Belarus Anna Leasing at the University of Brain and I'm delighted to say she joins us on the line now Auger a very warm welcome to monocle twenty four. These absolutely bizarre scenes of President Lukashenko yesterday. Well. Yes. I was actually also quite as to see you know him banning public with a gun and also his fifteen year old son campaign him so to say so it's the definitely assigned for me that he he's kind of knocked children confidence in front of the people who through testing by his residence, and it's also not you know not that Jerry. Addict from me because the protest is peaceful, protesters will not trying to receive this residents in the state needs. said the wall spread the information that there was some attempt to seek the? Residency so it's quite an emotional psychological reaction from him. I would say and will. Nobody. that. So it's also very strong sign that there is now readiness of from from the official from the state site for any kind of luck that you know this new to build coordination committee by Dehaan Oscar and she team is is trying to do initiate and I think everybody most notably people. In Belarus itself have been absolutely taken aback by the brutality of the reaction by the the Lauren forces to the protesters and the fact that Alexander Lukashenko was was dressed up in riot gear suggests that he doesn't have anywhere to go other than a violent approach. Yes I would also I would also expects it. You know what targeted repressions and they're ready started last week and they continued this week. So what what would serve now is definitely not base wave of unprecedented repression that we. Saw Three days and nights after the elections but still there are targeted repressions and against. Most active people are also criminal case has been initiated against the newly built coordination committee and people. People are invited to some talks with KGB officials until also people actually also bill will try to strike there actually threatened. By the direction openness of the state owned enterprises that they would lose their jobs and so on. So observe already targeted pressure on people, but this wave is still not to the tide because you know. So what international reaction was so the state drives, you know just show from the one handed, it's not ready for the data from the one hand there is the rest of. You know not not to let this protests spread. Within the country how much do you think that's what the foreign observers of said about what's been happening in Belarus for the last couple of weeks is actually forming any decision made by Alexander Lukashenko at the moment. Well I think that it will quite an important aim has been achieved ready and that we actually we have understood that he's not legitimate within the society right within the boat society and I think also problem was that he really did not understand that. Shortly after the elections or before the elections so and. Actually. I think that the reaction was not is at least that. He and his circles really have the distended. Okay. He doesn't have any majority in society, but it has not led so far to his readiness for dialogue just in the all the way he kind of supports the security structures in internal, Misteri Ministry and actually he even gave you know about three hundred medals to those who are actually responsible of for for this incident violence. So he kinds of stresses that the security two structures military is. Actually the most important pillar his powerful for now for the moment, the Steve Kerr show is joining us now he's policy and advocacy. Directorate. Freedom from torture and author of St Spirit Steve. Welcome. Thanks for joining us. Hey On monocle twenty, four Olga a moment ago mentioned the fact that the secret police is still called the KGB I mean, what does that say about the level of influence at Russia's still has in terms of the way that Belarus's going and whether Russia just going to sit this out. Yes I mean I either it reflects influence of Russia, which is August is certainly, very great or it's just almost bizarre retro element to to better under Lukashenko. He doesn't mind thinking in those terms I think it is going to be. So Russia will certainly be an important factor and but at the same time Mosca really doesn't want to be. Getting, further involved in in a very direct since that's going to be difficult for Russia as well. So I think that Lucas. Is playing a very difficult game. If he was giving small confessions, I think he might have some a little bit more success in some homage to blunt things but so far at least the violence has had absolutely opposite effective people become more and more angry the fear obviously quite rightly the last Sunday was absolutely crucial. I would argue that the US huge threats of on ahead of Sunday hoping that people. Would back off and stay at home and actually it was a big rally than ever. So not particular face off. There's no question that Lukashenko loss what happens next we'll still see I'll steve has suggested that Sunday was a pivotal moment some people waiting for what is described as a tipping point when an event causes things to go one way or the other would you say that Sunday was part of that? Tipping Point. Demon this Sunday last Sunday. To Sunday. The Sunday. Just gone when tens of thousands of people came out onto the streets to set by a threat the first Sunday directly after the elections. Yes. I it just completely I mean people never any. Okay. What we're talking about batteries and Ballard who's says, Chris it's not the first Sunday that actions pulses side will have to admit that it also not to the extent that people actually being tortured eating the prisons will have also. took a beast fag, but it's for the first very time that such vast majority of people. So it with their own is is of their families or friends in stone. So you can imagine how many are nets were the strategy when they're where our seven seven thousand arrests. So it's it's quite a big part of the country said it's really I would agree it had an opposite effect and it's also for the first time that you know this special. GRANITZ or gas or a also rubber bullets on there were actually used against own population. It never existed in the history of Belarus in October election protests, people widget shocked and I think it was a shock from the both sides because the state net expected to such mass protest before also before three weeks before the elections would be solved by. About two to five or even six percent of local population came to to railways with Hannele. It's also unprecedented thing was kind of shock from both sides and of course, people people were also by this eighty percent because nobody really believes that anymore I mean. People also really did not quite believe that before I, would say people heading out some kind of feeling that president steelhead had a majority maybe not eighty percent maybe fifty five, maybe sixty but this feeling was there and this style with completely different. So quiet in Jersey, you know quite a big part even I think I would say the majority of people just didn't believe that he actually has any kind of fifty plus and that was the problem that we still have this eighty percents I think people would just. People were just humiliated by that of course, activate shortly afterwards by this unprecedented wave refreshing stave when we look to the further history of batteries, which is being written right now when considering what sort the former eastern bloc countries of have seen in the last three decades. When regime ends, it's generally quite a peaceful affair actually the deleted. is of removed from office. This is unlikely to happen here. Isn't it? Well, I mean, sometimes it has been an sometimes it hasn't been. So when I was a journalist working for the independent, I was the East Europe during the eighty nine revolutions and also join me the fall of Milosevic Milosevic in Serbia and cover dot and there a number of those leaders were ready to use very significant violence and what I'm fascinated by very moved by what was seeing with the courage. A better as protesters today is to see that they are defined vence in the same ways that work very effectively for example, in East Germany where people were threatened with extraordinary for someone particular day in Leipzig in. October nineteen eighty-nine the fact that so many people came out meant regime which had publicly declared its loyalty to force actually back down in Romania I very much. Hope it weren't turn into remain, but we do already see that there are splits within Belarus at the riot police remain loyal. The moment we've seen a number of police units splits off. We've seen a lot of establishment figures putting off in the same way as also does something happened in in Ukraine and the Orange Revolution, and once you see security forces a different security forces splitting away going like enough already as August said, I mean the eighty percent. Claim was was absurdly insulin and the degree of the virus even Grayson seen before and I think this is really interesting. It might end up in huge volumes but I think Lukashenka would lose very very badly that to happen I think it's a regional issue. How if you like bluntly how crazy you are Milosevic. For example, he survived on one occasion ninety seven by giving some concessions and then re clamping down and people just got tired and went back when you use real violence I think it's really difficult. It was a great book written by Richard couple the Polish off I was written about the Iranian revolution. Charlotte. Charlotte's but very much reflected his own country Poland which forty years ago. This month solidarity kind of a huge opposition movement didn't call itself opposition challenge the regime and unthinkable circumstances laying Brezhnev for the very reactionary Russian leader was still in power. They managed to become successful and he said the moment where people stand in front of eastern threatens violence, the pre curry signing backstops, and instead someone stands there and doesn't back down he said, this is where the revolution begins, and after that in effect is the exact the precipice. If you're to violence, you make people more angry if you start making concessions than people go. We have lost our fear and in a sense the certain moment difficult to prediction events but describable. There is no way back to the regime and it still seems a little bit early to say but I think it's very, very difficult to see how Lukashenko come back from this. If he steps back more gently than, of course, it will be peaceful. The protests have been fun tastic peaceful and very, very consciously so far the extended even cleaning up rubbish because I really vary consciously very civic. Minded. So he might just go off and disappear off to Russia for example, and as it will live happily ever after but he tries to bring out all of the guns. Then I think you know all bets are off but I don't think it was a good ending for him whichever way it goes Steve Crozier and Elga agenda over there. Thank you for joining us on monocle twenty four.

A Little History- Based On A True Story
"They were talking about. Songs that are based on true stories. And, What's interesting about this subject? Is that a lot of times? When you see a movie that says based on a true story, it literally might have one aspect of an event that they base it on, but when it's the song, it's actually a it seems like it's more valid. There's more. There's less at stake. That film. And there's more accuracy than movies claim to be sometimes. So. We're covering I. Think they're seven songs here I realize you probably left went out and he did it on purpose. Which one would be the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon. Lightfoot Never bring that up in polite society, his based on a true event. It is one of the worst songs and don't get me wrong. I like Gordon Life. She said it. You heard it here. I like Gordon. Lightfoot care that song is. What are the worst songs ever anyway? please understand with some of these things like my very first one. There's literally no way I can tell you the entire story, so I'm having to kind of give you guys the abridged version, and so please forgive me for that, because the first one is waiting for the worms by Pink Floyd, which is about the Nazi death camps of the Holocaust. So right like starting right off the bat. There is literally no way in a single episode of a podcast. Can I explain to you the Nazi Holocaust? But what I will say is that there was this war called World War Two. In the thirties and the forties as we all know guys there. There's mass extermination and for years Jewish people and other other people like the Romani Gypsies. Homosexuals were sent to forced labor camps. And Ghettos and then this thirties in Europe, a yeah, and in nineteen, forty two, they were actually deported to extermination camps, or or other kind of forced labour camps, whereas like Auschwitz was was. A labor camp and the death camp we were there on. Didn't go on our honeymoon, but we went to. Visit Europe we went to Poland actually. Yeah, it was It was one of the most important things that I feel like I. Ever made us do I'm sorry, we. We were in. Leipzig, Germany for our son's graduation and. We decided that since we were so close to Poland, which was about? It's about a six hour drive. Didn't turn out to be. Another story altogether. There's like one road to Poland. But we we rented a car. We drove to Poland. And we went to Auschwitz and. It, if you ever have the opportunity to go experience at, please do because it's one of the most important things you can do is to just be in that space and exist in that space. And just close your eyes and just feel. And it was one of the most. I hate touching. But it was one those moments where I could feel the past. Choking me. And it's overwhelming. It's incredibly overwhelming and. Just, the the the size the scope the scale that they did things on. Were saying and it was a machine. And so. Auschwitz had. A cyclone be they would lead people into the gas chambers. Drop the cyclone being and. I think it would take maybe seven minutes, and then they would just go in clear the bodies. And put them into the. The furnaces and they're six camps that were purely extermination camps, and trebling was one of them that they didn't actually think. Treblinka existed because they had before. It, they had a chance to liberate. The literally tore everything down and planted trees. And they didn't think that it existed, but they found infrastructure like in the ground, and then they found mass. Graves and things like that well speaking of research on the Second World War the series. Band of brothers is probably at the top of things to see and my gosh episode I'm going to site. Is your favorite episode nine why we fight his capture, the discovery of this and the meaning of what it was, and they do a great job of sort of keeping in that time-frame, instead of looking back with the knowledge that we have now just imagine. Coming out of the woods in finding this. Cluster of buildings and there's barbed wire, and there's people and you're not sure what it is and I think they just did a masterful job catching the how these soldiers fell when they when they stumbled across this camp. Yeah,

Johann Sebastian Bach 1: About Johann Sebastian Bach
"One of your parents doctor or lawyer and maybe as far back as they can remember everyone in their family has gone into the same profession while that's how it was with the Bach family all of them were musicians Johann. That's German for John. Sebastian Bach was born in sixteen eighty. Five in the German town of is enough. His father was the official town musician. There by the time was ten. Both his parents had died so he went to live with his older brother. Who was also a musician? Of course Johann Sebastian. Bach turned out to have very fleet fingers. He played a mean violin and by the time he was eighteen. He had a job as an organist. Bach held three main jobs over the course of his life. You can tell where he was working by. What kind of music? He wrote the first box. Big Jobs was official. Court organist for the Duke of Weimar so a lot of box great organ. Music comes from early on in his career. That Weimar job also had box serving as concert master. The head Honcho violinist of the Duke's orchestra when the Duke of Weimar decided not to make him conductor of the Orchestra. Bach was pretty unhappy. Then a visiting prince offered a job directing his orchestra but when Bach tried to quit his job in Weimar. The dukes said no way he even threw in jail for a month to try and make its point but it didn't work when Bach got out of jail. He headed straight to the town of curtain to work for the prince the prince had a wonderful orchestra so Bach wrote lots of instrumental music. While he was in curtain eventually balk moved onto his last job at the Saint. Thomas Lutheran Church. In the city of Leipzig. His title was cantor. That's what they called the choir and music director and it was a huge job box trained singers organized music for several churches in town and for the University of Leipzig and he composed new music every week for services at the Saint Thomas Church most of Bach's great choral music was written in Leipzig the choir at the Saint Thomas. Church still performs box music every week. One of the coolest things I ever got to do was sit in the church where Bach worked and listen to the choir sing. His music while Bach was alive. No one outside the towns in Germany where he worked had heard of him and people thought of him as just another working musician after he died people pretty much forgot about him until a century later when another composer Felix Mendelssohn dug out some of Bach's music and performed it after that the whole world recognized what a genius had been and Faulk may even be recognized beyond this world in nineteen seventy seven scientists sent the unmanned voyager spacecraft off to explore the galaxy. They put examples of the best that planet Earth had to offer on board and one of those examples was a recording of Johann Sebastian box. Brandenburg Concerto number.

The East German punks who helped bring down the Berlin Wall
"Berlin Wall. Couldn't keep all Western culture out. And it couldn't keep old East berliners down inspired by the music born over the wall by radio radio stations in West Berlin. A spirited and resourceful punk rock scene flourished in the city's east to more author of burning down the House that's H. Cia. US punk rock revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall joins me to countdown his East German punk rock top five tim first of all before we stopped. Stop playing the songs. How did punk rock find? Its Way to East Germany. You could pick up western radio almost the entire country of Germany and so everybody talks about the first time they heard the pistols usually on KNBR forces radio or BBC and that was just a moment that changed people's lives. It was so different from anything that ever heard. NFL Ika switches me sore inside them. How soon did it take root the first hearings that people had of the sex pistols? So I'm guessing this is seventy six seventy seven. How quickly did jump the fence? The first punk in East Berlin was a fifteen year old. A girl who went by the name major and that was September nineteen seventy seven and within less than a year. She already had thirty five opened on her and she was labeled enemy of the state and in her case case. That led to constant attainments interrogation and despite that a senior rounder. They wait until she turned eighteen and they arrested or tried her put in jail offer year and Stacey prison and that she slept with what's called the Berlin fabled meaning that when she got out of prison they took her mmediately to a textile facility in the middle of nowhere and she was expected to work there for the next next five years. And be sort of politically rehabilitated. And would not see your family or friends. She ran away almost immediately. Back to East Berlin was rearrested put back and Stacey prison for eighteen months and then at the end of that term ex patriot. Meaning they to ship off the West Germany to Take care of problem. This first strike is called. MFS which is the determine initials for the Ministry for State Security which is the study by benkhaled nominal since from nineteen eighty to about four or five years after ground zero of companies Germany. You can kind of see how the Stasi on GonNa go for conquer. Well they also make a direct comparison between the dossier and Hitler's S S which did not overrule on an explicitly. Anti Fascist in the music was their tool that is just how they fought dictatorships of the music. Wasn't they weren't trying to be tickly. Artful I don't think it was all about the message. And whereas other activists groups had a more reformist approach let's change Environmental regulations are some of the legal system. The punks just said screw. The system was bringing down and that was a really powerful message especially for bringing you to their costs. One of the interesting things about normalises day ended ended up going to prison for almost two years for their lyrics in nineteen ninety-three and I think what happened to them. During that process shows why the scene became so important as far as being a significant it can force in the revolution. They constantly were offered to go to the West. When they're in jail the wooden really rather just go to the west and the member the kept saying no? We're GONNA stay here and fight because that was quite coleman wave dispensing with troublemakers. Wasn't yeah exactly but two punks mostly rejected that and they insisted that they can stay and fight. And I think that basically the big Goan in in a place like East Germany was what happens when you run afoul of the secret police. The Sasi and the punks did that experiment. And what they proved was in going through the jail terms going through the payments going through interogations the blacklisting from jobs in schools the conscription into army units specialising political reeducation and the fact that they came back and kept fighting. That was a game changing revelation. Because it showed that you could resist and survive and that's deal the resolve of a lot of the opposition minded people within the country in that in turn allowed the protest move out into the streets worker then snowball into the big mass protests that we know from eighty nine. Let's move along out to sean climate. At what point to divide join the revolution. They're very early. Bantu and there are unique because they come from a little farm town in the south of East Germany and end and yet they became if anything. It's not really a star type culture but there was closest star system. We're in the eastern or Pengzi. How big was it possible to get? I'm guessing terrifically it couldn't record you couldn't play except in churches and get on the radio so yeah it was very limited seen it first and everything had to be done very personally. So you couldn't do mail wasn't security consent flyers for shows. The phones weren't security. Couldn't call friends say you're doing a Gig so it all had to be done through what they call the whisper network person to person. We're doing a GIG. And he told that friend Ephron told another friend but by eighty three they were getting concerts in the thousands. And that's when the stuff you really crackdown but Shaun calm created in nineteen eighty-four after they had some the trouble with this dossier has resulted crackdown. They created the song called clue which means sort of like the tomboys the people that get beaten by the police and it has a line in there. We are the people. We are power and punks from Leipzig claim that that is the source of the chant. That became the sort of signature chant during the marches of eighty nine lexus. which was the people? The

"All right. I have five predictions that I would put any money on going through them. Number one, arson van Gurley, managing Real Madrid. By the end of the. Season. I love it that amazing. That was a disaster. The Lou Libre thing was a death disaster from when it started their underlying numbers really bad, doesn't seem like he's gonna last. Their vendor has talked about Real Madrid in the past. You know, who else are they gonna hire at this point. So count on that number two. Get ready for the red bull treble as I'm calling it with New York, red bulls, winning the MLS Rb Leipzig who I'm considering part of red bull, even though the club does not like to be called red bull winning the Bundesliga. And Rb Salzburg, winning Europa league. I love that one too. I know I have. I don't have the best reputation for, you know, actually carrying out the bets. But if that happens, Mike Nye or going to one shot, a tall can rebel live on air. I cannot wait for that. I'll I'll say eulogies. Number three, less surprising. German cities could ban some diesel cars after court ruling
"Of court has ruled that its legal for cities to pan diesel 'cause the federal administrative court in luxy says germany's states cities and communities have the right to impose diesel bands to control air pollution without federal legislation sonja gene as the head of de w's environment geskin joins me sonia can you explain what the court's decision actually entails so the administrative court in leipzig has just made a general decision on whether or not diesel bands can be imposed by municipalities and the back on on that is that stood guard and dusseldorf two big german cities had tried to reduce air pollution by imposing or wanting to impose some of these driving bans and the state so north rhinewestphalia and badenwuerttemberg opposed this and the the state and the federal government's really are trying to avoid these diesel bounce and so they brought this to the administrative court and now the administrative court has released this muchanticipated ruling which basically will allow german cities to impose diesel bands but the diesel bans are also quite restrictive that they've allowed so cities within six months half to come up with a plan to reduce their air pollution it can include diesel bands but very specifically this euro four as kind of the oldest and the dirtiest dieselcar standard is the one that can be banned first than in two thousand nineteen the euro five which is the kind of the next step of car and maybe eventually euro six which is the most recent other signs at the moment that specific cities are going to follow up on this immediately well it's likely that cities that brought this case will impose diesel bounce stood guard as we know has serious air pollution problems it among the seventy cities in germany that routinely have emissions of this pollutant that's harmful for human health above the standard that is allowed by the eu so this is one way in which the cities are trying to get a handle on the air pollution problem well as you mentioned the the government both the federal government and the state governments have opposed these bans building is under pressure from the eu to do more to combat air pollution so what other options on their them the back on on that is a germany is one of nine eu countries where routinely the emissions levels are above what's allowed in the eu and in order to tackle that bans.
