"Movie is purporting to say, or at least you can sense that Adam mckay's intention to the extent of this is relevant is like they don't care about the fact that there's about to be this crazy war started there. Too busy watching American idol and survivor, which are like Nickelback quality butts of jokes about consumable garbage television. Except when you consider what they're about, right? American idol survivor are about the various sorts of soft power and intangibles that lead large groups of people to coalesce around approving of a particular choice. And and that is the most relevant thing that anybody could be doing at that point in the story is watching survivor American idol because that's what decanes doing in the movie is figuring out how to get people to coalesce. Around in particular, choice that doesn't necessarily offer them particular tangible benefit, but that influences them various of soft ways. And so like many movies like RIP before it. I you're in for a slightly different movie that took on its subject matter with more earnestness and more determination and more of a willingness to take risks in which they interrogate the idea. Okay. Like Dick Cheney is a man who was at the ascent and apex of his power in the peak of American idol and survivor, and like what does that say which said of just dismissing American idol survivor as relevant when they are the dominant cultural things happening in the country that you are talking about for the entire movie pito to what I read the manifest text at least as far as I read. It was survivor was that in a sort of tribal council the Neo conservatives had decided that Iraq's. Iraq was being voted off the island that Iraq Iraq's torch was being. Snuffed out. Right. And that that like it was not that. It was the result of it was the result of this sort of contingent process and kind of self interest being played out in the exercise of soft power. Among an in group rather than of you know, geopolitics per se. I like that. I wish that I felt that in the moment when I was watching it. Maybe I just got to offended by the suggestion that that the Iraq war is the fault of people who like to watch TV which is kind of absurd on space. But I got the new conservativism was so glossed over in this movie, and it's so central to what I feel like a really critical almost like a breathtaking scene early on where we're Cheney is still a legislative assistant and as Rumsfeld. I mean, it's ridiculous that somebody wrote the scene and other people allowed this to be in the movie, Donald Rumsfeld. What do we believe in and then Steve correctly? I mean, it's great delivery. Although it's ridiculous. Just starts laughing just generally laughing out loud. And then just walks away and closes the door and changes stands there and the other side of the closed door and listens to him laugh by himself. I mean, like as funny as that was in the moment, if feels so dismiss they're basically saying, what do new conservative actually, believe doesn't matter. They don't believe anything. They're just in it for themselves, which is completely not. It's like he. No, he really wants to think of Cheney as like Trump as somebody who is just there as part of like a self enriching Khan. And that's not. I mean, the scary thing Chidi, he's a true believer. You know, he actually like thinks he understands how the world works and he can like ram through. You know, the like, here's the interesting thing. So the very first scene is sort of nine eleven scene, which point we flash back, and this sort of chilling end of it is that everybody in the room is feeling a lot of things, but Cheney was feelings of the nobody else was he was feeling the sense of opportunity. And then when we come back to it, we I think we're supposed to feel that the opportunity was the opportunity to sort of seize power for its own sake. That like this. Was changed chance to be the most important man in the world. Didn't matter what he's going to do with that power. All that mattered was that he was the guy. But I was thinking I mean at the beginning of the movie, it was just sort of like, I can't wait to hear what he feels. This is an opportunity for in..

"There's like the sergeant of arms that folks see during the state of the union address and those critical folks that make the housework. And so the committee through orientation really does help members get to know kind of the do's and don'ts. And and get them ready to go to open their office and to be legislators on that first day what sort of training do not only the members get on conduct on Capitol Hill. But also your the chiefs of staff and the other staff that's in the office. What's your as part of that early? Orientation was your sworn in and begin your service you require ethics training. So there's formal ethics training that the Senator in all staff has to complete a certification process that you've completed your ethics training. There are some other training required. Sexual harassment, for example. Nondiscrimination though, some there are formal trainings that the center in all the vessels have to complete. We do have a for the Senate is the rules committee is comparable to the house administration. And they help us in terms of the administration of the. Senate office. So that's your franking rules. You adhere to specific rules in the use of Frank. That's the mailing. And so. There's committees and professionals in place in case, you have any questions and the ethics committee in case you have. Provide a service of guys in case you have questions about what is and is not allowed. It's interesting something that's action about congress says there's no HR department the four hundred and thirty five members that are there are running and some respects their own small business, and and they're very Thomas and they're responsible to their constituents. And so as Dana mentioned, we do have some trainings that are very similar in the house. We also have some professional development that occurs from the different conferences and house administration provides a lot of professional development as well. And we give guidelines for how on the numbers personal office. Handbook should look like the folks know what to expect there? But it's a lot of professional development that is done between the different offices in the different shapes and different communications directors. But it looks very different than folks and the private sector are probably used to. Let's talk about all the folks that are squeezed into these Capitol Hill offices. You've got the chief of staff scheduler legislative director legislative correspondents, the legis. Slative systems communications director press secretary office manager correspondents manager, staff assistant, constituents service, representatives, research assistance, and of course, the ever important insurance that we know dominate on capitol health. But let's talk about a few of these the scheduler how important is the scheduler to a member of congress. Absolutely essential. In fact, as we were looking to set up our office. We celebrate a few people on from the campaign. We're looking to fill out the officers. One of the first hours made was the scheduler is absolutely essential. The volume of requests, you get for both in DC in back home is enormous and trying to that all of those requests. Fit them in a twenty four hour schedule. A difficult job. So incredibly important is since you position party office. And how would you describe the scheduler hand schedule orchids schedule a make or break any member? And we have a printed out card every day to get through a legislative day in the office in every fifteen minutes, the congressman usually has a different meeting. And so I think of a skill set of a schedule or someone who is very organized, but someone who is flexible because in the house, you don't have a scheduled time for your votes in a minute that bell rings. You've got fifteen minutes to get down there. And it really wrecks your day. And you do the best you can to to keep things running the schedule or is is on for doing that every day legislative director might just like have director supervises all the other why just late of assistance to and makes recommendations to the member of how to vote, and what groups like or dislike the Bill or in the background and the policy. Issues that are surrounding the issues of the day. And and and how the member might wanna think about voting also whether members should be a co-sponsor of a Bill, whether a member should author Bill weather, the number should sign onto a letter to leadership or a government agency. So the legislative director really is the person that's the lead on on those types of issues communications directors press secretary role. Do they play? Again, another very important on real for us sent off to have brought it press off operations than house offices. So we have a direct communications. We have a press assistant. We ever press secretary. And we typically have a press intern is well down the director of communications oversees that entire process they helped define the message and work with our media both national and local media media to convey that message from from the Senator they also helped craft his speeches. And so the director of communications is extremely important and most most offices also has a digital assistant who manages the sort social media. So. So all of which falls underneath our director of communications Dina Gresham is chief of staff to Senator Doug Jones democrat from Alabama. A C span conversation along with Jen Dolby chief of staff to congressman Rodney Davis Republican from Illinois WC PFM, Washington beyond Washington. These new lawmakers coming in January also have to set up offices back in their districts or states in those offices. You have a district director state scheduler and constituent services Representative what is happening in the district office, and why is it needed? So we have six different offices from Mr. Davis is congressional district. We have fourteen counties we try to put different offices geographically around the district. So folks can easily drive to one of the offices. If they need assistance, though, staff in those offices are helping numbers with any issues. They have with government agencies such as veterans affairs. Most of our casework is veterans related. They are stepping in for the congressman when they're and when he or she is in Washington DC and being there surrogate and attending events. In visiting constituents businesses organizations, really the eyes of the heirs for the member when they're gone and those offices house all those different staff fan of Christian. Well, what would you say about the importance of district offices for a Senator who's covering the entire state? Extremely important. I think for most of our constituents the only interaction they'll have with Senator in with Sarah office is through our local reps through our local staff there in the state. So interestingly enough when we came on board. We kept some of the district the state staff that previously worked for so two straight as soon recessions case workers in particular. They are essentially the institutional knowledge of that stage there they understand the issues that our constituents face and how best to resolve those through the federal process, so extraordinarily important public servants. And that's what they are. They're public servants in their real have a passion for serving their state. So absolutely critical. Absolutely essential for the. Working of the of the office, according to legend storm. Here's average salary of these staff positions chief-of-staff around one hundred and forty four thousand legislative director can make around eighty one thousand legislative assistant close to fifty thousand press secretary above that seventy one thousand around that a scheduler fifty two thousand constituents service rep again around fifty thousand legislative correspondent can make nearly forty thousand same as a staff assistant is it hard to recruit and find good people for these positions. Jendoubi one of the things about Capitol Hill. That's interesting. It is the absolute best of the best, and we talked to folks they have the impression that everybody's from Washington DC, and these are bureaucrats that popped up from who knows where these are the best and brightest kids throughout the country that want to come work for government and having a of service and believe in their government and believe in this institution and democracy. And so I think. A privilege to be a chief of staff and the resumes. I've seen over the years despite what we pay folks. And no one's getting rich working capital health. We have always had amazing applicants who want to come work particularly for congressman Davis, and how do those salaries compared to what the member of congress makes a number of congress salary set hasn't been raised in quite some time. And they have to. Whether in Washington DC and their districts, so and their salaries what one hundred and eighty thousand somewhere around there. Yeah. That's actually might be a little less than half. And you said kids, you know, these kids on Capitol Hill. I mean is it primarily young people on Capitol Hill on the staff tends to be older in comparison to the house more experienced. We have larger staffs and centers have the cover a broad range of issues, and we have a staff that reflects those interest in issues that we have to cover so are staffed, and again tend to be a little bit older and a bit more experience than how staff, but sure the young. I would agree is best and brightest. Is folks who are so committed the public service and really engage in this sort of policy realm and are interested in. Debating ideas and issues, so but the hours are long. In comparison to the private sector, the pay is lower. And so you really do have to have a passion for what you do. And. In order to do the day in day out and do it. Well, how long are the hours describe a typical day week on Capitol Hill. I think the best example is when members come in every week their first votes at six thirty at night. So if you're a staffer handling that vote series, and and staffing that number. You're not leaving till seven o'clock. And so members vote very late at night. And you know, at least one day a week, you're gonna be there til stamina clock and the day usually starts with some type of breakfast or early morning meeting at eight o'clock and depends on and how long we have oats for what are some of the benefits of working on Capitol Hill. I think you're working for a greater good think about different different jobs. Folks. Have I'm rarely do you get to go do something that's bigger than yourself. And it's not about you. And that you hopefully, you did something to make this country a better place or you did something to help a constituent that day. So I think that's really what drives a lot of staff out here is just the meaning and the purpose for what you're doing. I would agree every day. We have the ability to do something. Good for our home state. I'm from Alabama. So that's what draws me every day. I come into the job. I know that there's an opportunity to do something. Good. And so that's what drives our staff and when times are hard when the partisanship ratchets up when the intensity level gets high. We're all comforted by the fact that every day. These are unique opportunities to serve you have an opportunity to do. Good work. What are the resources like for each office? How much money do you get? And how was it spent? See you get what's called an M, A and members representational allowance and that budget in the house is set based on how far you are from DC, California members get a little bit more because they're playing tickets cost more and their travel budgets are larger. We also take how many people are in each district because you're mailing your constituents. And so if you have a larger district, they're you know, because of the census we roughly try to have them I'm close to the same boat. It is based your RA isn't based on how many constituents live in that district. And you give us an idea of how much member might spend on sending mail to their constituents. I think it depends on how much at how much they want to spend an mats up to them. You get an MRI. And then you you spend that money how you want. But for example on our office. We. We answered roughly seventy thousand letters last year. And then we proactively spin around two hundred thousand pieces of mail to tell folks what was going on ashington DC, and there's a real emphasis on staying in touch with your constituents and answering that male. How else do I mean explain how constituents reach out to their member of congress, and.
