he'll keep working for the american people as the drama plays out california republican tom mccarthy and worries that what gates hopes to do could freeze the house floor the immediate effect eyes the will house be indefinitely to because no other business can be taken up until a replacement is elected on capitol hill mitchell miller wtop news stay with us here on wtop and our of course capitol hill correspondent mitchell miller but also all the resources of cbs news associated press week also new tonight and developing former president trump claims his civil fraud trial which started today today in new york took him off the campaign trail he attack against him it's a witch hunt it's a disgrace we have a corrupt attorney general in this state you she see how does this trial was railroaded at fast track mr trump was not required to attend the trial which is civil a action not a criminal case but he was there as you heard for the first day he attacked new york attorney general tish james quarter billion dollar lawsuit against him in the same manner he has railed against the criminal charges he's facing in other jurisdictions joining us live now with some reporting and some context here cbs news chief election and campaign correspondent robert costa thanks for uh... patiently hanging on the line baba what what are a couple of important things we should know about based on what you saw today your sources and your observations i was inside the room today sitting just behind former president donald trump as he entered the room and intentions were high he didn't even look at the attorney general tisha james spring in the civil lawsuit against him eventually he declared her and he lashed out to reporters out in the hallway during breaks in the proceedings saying that this is a politically targeted witch hunt against him but this is a very serious civil case for the former president he's so intertwined with his company and his brand the trump organization and if this goes forward he could be banned from operating as a businessman in new york does that mean that not that he would necessarily be penniless but certainly far less wealthy than we know him to be right now the attorney general and her team they're seeking 250 million dollars in damages they believe property over recent decades has enabled him to make a lot of money hundreds of millions of dollars and they want to recoup in that some way and have him pay that to the state from a legal standpoint do Donald Trump's lawyers have a chance to back fight especially in the argument that Attorney General Letitia James ran for office on the promise get Trump that is their argument or is the evidence kind of stacked against them well the evidence they're building case the they're making is more about how valuations of company can be subjective and different people have different opinions about how someone's much brand is worth and how much someone's company is worth and they're going to make the case that the government is overstepping how it reads criminal intent into how Trump talked about his own net worth and talked about the value of his companies and they're going to say that it's a bit more vague and the water is muddied it's not as clear crystal as the Attorney General might believe it would be I know in your journalistic career as I have in mind you've heard from some school journalists who say take what's important and make it interesting don't necessarily you know take something that's not that important some people notice that the judge smiled for the camera today is that being discussed as something that's significant Robert I saw it today this is judging Goran I watched as the camera turned to him there was a pool camera in the room and what you saw for the the judge judge he beamed for the camera as the pool camera zoomed across his face and it did irritate the Trump people in you the room could see they were visibly distressed by it but he's in total control now this isn't a jury trial this is a judge trial he's ruled already that he believes Trump committed fraud and at this point Trump's fate is in his hands whether he likes it or not okay Robert Costa live on WTOP he was right there in the courtroom today in New York City as this fraud trial gets underway he is CBS News chief election and campaign correspondent Robert Costa let's get to some mother news here the sentencing of one Capitol rioter was kept secret now prosecutors are revealing why Samuel star pleaded guilty to charges he attacked police officers on the day of the riot he was released from federal custody last month after serving a 30 -month prison sentence a court filing reveals a reason for the unusual secrecy is Lazar cooperated with federal authorities prosecutors want to keep certain details of what he said under wraps it is rare for records of a guilty plea and sentence to be sealed even in cases involving a defendants cooperation earlier because of the charges against him a magistrate ruled Lazar's would pretrial pose a release threat to public safety ed donahue washington a lower court ruling that attorney john eastman and former president trump likely committed a crime by trying to keep congress from certifying president biden's 2020 presidential election victory will stand for now the supreme court denied eastman's effort to throw out that ruling justice clarence thomas recused himself in the court's consideration of eastman's appeal justice thomas deviated from his usual practice of not recusing himself from cases before the court in which he may have a conflict of interest we saw that indirectly when we realized that he had participated in a decision in which his friend and patron the same billionaire who took him on lavish vacations had a stake in the outcome and justice thomas has not withdrawn from cases involving the 2020 election even though his wife is a republican operative at cbs news legal "Leaders. They have a WTO for more on these developing stories. Time now is 1238. I think the weather on the 8s over to Ian Crawford in the WTO P traffic center. Back to Virginia dino and we've got more cones in the road on 66 this time at his westbound inside the bellway through falls church after route 7 Leesburg pike single left getting past the works on there was some slowing while they were dropping the cones. That is done. The work is underway and you are getting by without a great deal of delay, but with the appropriate amount of caution. Outside the beltway, the westbound work is all going to be the express lanes on 66, the ramp to monument drive is shut down and then after 29 Centreville. You express lanes, westbound, down to a single right lane. Past the work eastbound in the main travel lanes on 66 after Gainesville and 29 exit 43, the right lane is blocked and then after exit 47 for business two 34 that suddenly road, the left lane is getting by the work, then try to get out of 66. That's another matter altogether from the beltway it's a chore. Outer loop ramp to go west on 66 blocked by work you will probably need to go down to route 50, Arlington boulevard, either go west to nutley street and then back up to 66, or you can double back on the inner loop and catch the westbound ramp to 66 at exit 49. Now you can do go west bout from the interloop. You apparently can not go eastbound from the inner loop. That ramp apparently blocked also on the inner loop after Georgetown pike two left lanes getting by the work. A 95 couple of very minor work zones after Quantico and then again after garrisonville, southbound, had the right lane block very, very small effect on your drive toward Fredericksburg. In the district crash activity, the color found was going to be through Adams Morgan, 18 street northwest, southbound, near Florida avenue, the right lane was blocked by the crash. The third street tunnel getting into it to and from New York avenue, we had left lane block southbound the right lane blocked north pencil single file traffic getting into and out of the tunnel. "It was in a Costco today. My local Costco, Leesburg, Virginia. Told you I go there about once a week to get a hot dog. And I was walk through there, You know, Keep my hat down. The other things I get from time to time I went through the book table there. And I want to thank them. Because there were a couple of stacks in my book, but it looks like you folks are very busy. Because there were a lot of new books, including from some of our friends, and there were a couple of stacks there and it didn't look like anybody was buying many of them. But when it came to American Marxism There were two stacks and they were half gone. And whether it's Costco or Barnes and Noble. Or WalMart. Target. Sam's Club. BJ's So many of you out there. And even most of all, Amazon I feel like we're making a lot of progress. I really do. I really do. I think will be at 900,000 and a couple of weeks. And maybe a month or so after that. I think we'll be at the At the Million mark. As I've told you, I think when we're at the million mark, that's where we're going to be. "It. But Venezuela has arrived. And Leesburg, Virginia, My husband went to Costco last night here. By five. Okay? Hybrid by for his birthday, our tradition to grill for his birthday. Usually they're $40. Yesterday. They were $90. Wow. We did not have rib eyes last night. It's happening that's like almost double in price, and I'm very scared that it's just going to get worse and worse. I don't want to upset you, but it's definitely going to get worse and you can already see it as I say. People tell me they drive into McDonald's. You can't get anything for really Maybe one meal. A small meal for five bucks used to be able to get a lot for five bucks. You see, the cost of labor is going through the roof in order to keep people working. Even low skilled or no skilled labour because they're competing with the federal welfare state now. That is your tax dollars, So that's driving up prices. There's shortages of items that's driving up prices. And of course, inflation is driving up prices. I went also in Leesburg. To a gas station called sheets and I went to fill up my car. And the the premium price was unbelievable yet it's shot way up and it's not just them. I don't blame them. It's because we were energy independent. Prior to this man taking over and moving into the Oval Office. We're not energy independent anymore. You know, OPEC is back in action. And, of course, Russia gets their pipeline. "Just west of Leesburg, up the point of rocks towards the city of Frederick, and it goes all the way north of the P a line into parts of Franklin and Adams County, Pennsylvania. It's a solid line. There are no breaks in it. Very heavy rain, quarter sized hail possible in 60 to 70 mile per hour wind gusts within some of these storms, and that's of course, as strong as an EF zero Tornado. So there's gonna be a lot of tree damage with some of these storms and power outages. If you're basically in northern Frederick County, western Carroll County all the way down through the rest of Frederick County into Loudon County and northern Faqir County in Northern Prince William County, you have a solid severe thunderstorm warning until 5 15 and the whole line is moving to the east at around 55 MPH. That would get it close to northern Fairfax County in the Beltway area in Montgomery County. Between now and about six o'clock with temperatures this hot and this much humidity. There is no reason for these storms to weaken anytime soon. Now they are cooling the atmosphere a little bit behind the storms. You're dropping down into the eighties into the seventies. The severe thunderstorm watch continues until 10 p.m.. It's been extended for the eastern shore of Maryland until midnight. And that's about when all of it will be over completely for our area.
