In this episode we speak to Ben Quilty, one of Australia’s most well-known artists. In 2016, Ben travelled to Lebanon, Greece, and Serbia with Man Booker Prize winning author Richard Flanagan to follow the refugee exodus from Syria. Encounters on this trip gave Ben the idea to later return to Lebanon to produce a book of drawings from Syrian children on their memories of Home. We also hear from Alice Pung. Alice is a lawyer and an award-winning writer based in Melbourne. Her bestselling works include Unpolished Gem, Her Father’s Daughter and the anthology Growing Up Asian in Australia. Alice’s parents fled Cambodia to create a new home somewhere safe. She was born just one month after her parents arrived in Australia in 1980. From her childhood in multicultural Braybrook Victoria to the racism Pauline Hanson brought into the public discourse during the 1990’s. Alice has experienced the best and the worst of Australia’s attitudes towards migrants. Season 2 of The Yak will run From May to September and episodes will come out fortnightly.
