"A highly anticipated report finally dropped yesterday from no less than the former acting attorney general of the United States. Sally Yates detailed the failures and the toxicity of the national women's soccer league. After a yearlong investigation. A culture of abuse, silence, and fear of retaliation, perpetuated the misconduct. In this environment, many players and team staff members have believed that reporting this conduct would be futile and it would actually be detrimental to their careers. Normalization of this conduct allowed teams the league and the federation to ignore their respective responsibilities of addressing abuse of conduct. That conduct and the NWSL's refusal to address it happened to be the focus of both the episode you are about to hear and a new E 60 film, truth be told, the fight for women's professional soccer, that's been in the works for months now. And so we should note that today's show contains depictions of sexual coercion and abuse. Jennifer Carson Strauss, we're here to discuss a specific year inside the national women's soccer league. That is really just unlike anything else that's happened in a professional sports league that I can recall. And the film you directed about it for E 60 was Lisa salters reporting, it begins at one very specific moment. So what was it and when was it? Yeah, October 6th, 2021, almost a year ago. All games across the country in the national women's soccer league stopped play in the 6th minute, which had never been done before. You know, I think a lot of people at that time were wondering what was going on. It was a moment that grabbed national headlines, not just in sports, but across the nation. As that 6 minute approach is in every woman on the field knows what's gonna happen in that 6th minute. The referee blows the whistle. Do you have a whistle on the field? We wondered what we might see tonight and players from both teams, including from the benches. Enter to the center circle and all join arms. You can see players from both teams Armin arm links. They're all moving to the center circle together right now. Not just with their own teammates, but with the other team, who they're playing against. To have this moment of solidarity. Every player from both teams in the middle of the field, I think you can see you can feel the weight of this statement, this moment for the players. When you ask the players involved in that coordinated moment. What did they remember thinking about? What were they hoping to do as they remembered it? They were nervous. And there was a lot of emotions, whether you had been directly affected or not by any sort of abuse, verbal, emotional, sexual, you were feeling the pain of what was happening in this league. Women felt fed up. And just disgusted and ready to put their foot down. These women were standing up for long overdue change. The fallout from the abuse scandal rocking the national women's soccer league. We see over and over again what's referred to as a culture of silence. This now makes three coaches total, the national women's soccer league has fired in its ranks for misconduct. They want to have trust in management. They want to have trust in coaches and they haven't had that. There were systemic abuse issues happening in the league and it wasn't just that year. It had been going on for a long time. And in the NWSL, we had reported and found out that there was this culture of silence that had existed. And this was a moment where these women decided we're

"8 four four 747 88 68 is our toll free telephone number that's 8 four four 747 88 68. I want to go to the patriot mobile newsmaker line. We've been following another big story. Out of the world of collegiate sports, the University of Pennsylvania nominating a man for their woman of the year award Leah Thomas. And that's got I'm telling you this whole battle over transgender athletes is rocking the sports world. I want to go to the phone lines, marshy Smith is from icons and it's an organization that's been fighting speaking out about this and defending biological female athletes, marshy so good to have you on the program today. Thank you so much for having me. What are what are some of the concerns that you have based on the news coming out now that UPenn is pretty much Tripoli down and nominating Leah Thomas for this NCAA award. Well, this nomination is truly outrageous. You know, Penn and the Ivy League have essentially been running an anti woman campaign throughout this entire season. And there has just been consistent and frequent harassment of their current women athletes, you know, they were making constant threats that any statements in opposition to their guidelines that allowed a male competitor to compete in the women's category. They were asked to be cleared through the university first. So freedom of speech was nonexistent on the team, which extended to their families. They were told to seek counseling to make themselves okay with uncomfortable feelings, changing in the locker room. They essentially surrendered Ivy League conference titles, including Ivy League woman of the meet after their conference championship, the world watched the NCAA championship title in the 500 free go to a male athlete and now this is like another kind of nail in the coffin of women's collegiate sports by this nomination for women of the year. So the conference is making a big statement on the flip side and you being in Tennessee, I'm sure I don't have to convince you too hard, but the SVC really needs a pat on the back because they have backed the university of Kentucky and Riley gained who tied for 5th place with Leah Thomas at the championship meet. In so many ways, they have encouraged her to use her free speech to speak out and object the object to the guidelines that are in place currently and they've gone so far as to award Riley missed wildcat and SEC community service leader of the year. And this is after she has publicly spoken out. And now she is a nominee on behalf of the university of Kentucky and the SEC as well for NCAA women of the.

"Don't think that would be a bad thing. Why not? The one thing I wonder about from Chelsea's perspective and I know I've banged on about Lukaku all along. Tools signed off on Lukaku. Chelsea don't have any other job about center forwards, like actual real center forwards. Unless you want to go down the Armando brazier route, all right, maybe one day they will. They don't have a guy. And then we can put Harvard's in there and have this endless debate about Harvard's, but then you still need a backup or you want team Werner to be like the little type of guy. It's weird. And I think Chelsea needs to think long and hard about whether this is really the wise choice. That's true. Lucien Favre could be back at bursa munchie, Jules makes sense to you. I would love to see that. I'm not always keen on people returning to their clubs. We mentioned that before. And I think he would be different because if I think he fits so well with that club he obviously had a very good experience there. Then he left, he did some good things, some not so good things. But yeah, they need someone to just stabilize everything and that can voice, sometimes he's a bit annoying. And because you want to shake and say, go and be a bit more energetic. Yeah, it would be a big yes for me. Gab, I know masar was a special place in your heart. You'd rather run Madrid in January 2000 and 7 and announce on Sunday that he's leaving after 15 years and a half season. That's pretty special, right? I just think it's so long ago. Do you know who the Real Madrid manager was then? No. Fabio Capello. Fabio Capello. And he arrived together with Fernando gago and 9 in Gonzalo Higuaín. Yes. And it's pretty remark I mean, I think Gaga's career never reached the heights of the other two. It was a really good player. He had a lot of injuries. But yeah, Franco baldini brought them in and it's pretty amazing. And I know I know you've mocked them. I know you said, oh look. When you play the winner, but he is parallel with Dani Alves. Of course. But he was such an incredible attacking force in his prime. And plus he's so cool, especially when I'm with a big hair and I love him. You gotta love that. Now, Liverpool had decided that they were going to have a parade regardless to celebrate the two cup finals, even if they didn't win the Champions League. They had their parade, if you're into parades and stuff, they loved it, my whole accounts, the players loved it. Some people sneer at this. Are you one of those who say, oh, definitely shouldn't have a parade. No, definitely not. I mean, you had to plan it in case you want the Champions League, but there's nothing wrong in celebrating trophies. Whether it's the League Cup and the FA Cup, which is a double, I think arsenal dealing in the 90s is really done. Not many clubs win both. Well, you were so close to winning the primarily and the Champions League as well. Celebrate the whole season. You don't just celebrate the League Cup final. You celebrate the whole season. And it was a great season that could have been an incredible season with the quadruple. And see how many fans turned up. It defines the we're not happy with the season. They wouldn't have turned up in numbers. I think the players were really taken aback by how many and the passion that was found showed. And again, showing how great fans they are and I've got nothing against pirating for what was a really fantastic season. A 100% with you. You're not celebrating the trophy. I don't you celebrate the performance. Exactly. You celebrate this incredible season that they have. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. And if you shared it, let's face it. You're a bit of a mountain. God, tell us what happened with crazy stuff in oviedo on the last day of the second division in Spain. This is heartbreaking and in this, by the way, is part of the reason why Sid Lowe wasn't with us on the show today by cities. So essentially a video in the second division, they needed a whole bunch of results to go their way. And they needed a victory to get into the playoff spots for promotion to the top flight. And so they were playing Ibiza. Post clubbing. He scored the winner boka Boston penalty in the 95th minute. And in the meantime, news filtered through from the fans that one of the results it needed to go their way, against irona that the ironic scored, and so therefore they were up. Problem is that game finished now now. They're celebrating it's a mass pylon. And then word can get through to them and they get up and they look around and say, what? It's not true. They didn't win. It was Neil now. It was heartbreaking. It was really, really cool. You know, via those big rivals, south of eagle are going to troll them about this mercilessly for a long time. All in big Lyonnais have won the French league women's football. Of course, competing a champion league league on double. Jules, your reaction. Yeah, well done to them, Sonia Bon pasto for first season as the manager is doing an amazing job considering how disappointing last season was to bounce back the way they did, beating Barcelona, who we thought was invincible. In the final in the way they did as well with the manner. And then now PSG, they were they had a few points, there were three points clear of PhD before that came in Paris on Sunday, but that will make sure that they win the title now, which is a great double, not the first one, of course, because they have won the league 15 times. And a lot of Champions League as well. But well done to them, and my cario, the U.S. midfielder, who, for me, is the player of the season in all leagues, has been incredible again in that game, scoring the only goal. So well done to them. And then has a play just 83 minutes gap in Real Madrid's Champions League campaign, but the fact that they want it reportedly means that Chelsea will collect a cool 15 million pound bonus. So when we added all up, the transfer fee and et cetera selling him to rabbit three years ago seems to be the greatest moves in Chelsea history, right? Honestly, when this goes better, he had one year left on his contract. Now, the value of the transfer, depending on who you talk to, because he's anywhere between 80 and a 110 million. I don't know some people counting the bonuses or whatever. But this is really the gift that keeps on giving. And it's not a knock on Eden Hazard, who's one of my favorite players. It's been really unlucky with injury, could have gotten very different in Madrid. But from Chelsea's perspective, and I say this again and again, when a player has a year left on his contract, and so often, it just makes sense to sell because it's going to cost you more to keep them, especially if it is in his late 20s. They've done pretty well without him as well. Exceptionally well. Rachel, is that brings us to an end, but we got to come back. We got to come back on Thursday. Because we'll be reflecting Wednesday night. It is the real world championship. The champions of South America, Argentina, yes, play the champions of Europe, Italy and Wednesday night. It's my World Cup. We're not going to the other one in Doha. We love you. Right. So join us then. Until then, love the game. Love your neighbor. Love yourself. Hey guys, this is Mina chimes. And even prior to the league women's basketball fans that have connected with us, all the way down to, yeah, middle schoolers that listen to our show and everybody from any demographic all in between. So that's just a really cool shout out. We appreciate that. Yeah. That warms my heart because I don't think there's a time in your life quite the same as when you get to be a part of an organized sports team. Or it's just, you make so many cool memories, you meet friends that stay your friends for such a long time. I'd encourage anyone to either stay in basketball or if you're not into it. Get into basketball. If you have the chance, because it can take you a lot of places and it can give you a lot of good memories. Absolutely. That's got to be the best compliment I think we've ever received. Honestly, that's encapsulates so much of why we do what we do. And it's absolutely message we'd extend to anyone especially younger people listening to this. If basketball or sports is a part of your life, keep at it. It's there for everyone and everyone wins. "He took away our careers. I think it's just really important. And why we wanted to share our story and share in so much detail the damage that was done to our careers but who we are as people monash in was the player who went undrafted and she was not on anyone's prospect lists but she tried out and she persevered and she got a spot on the portland thorns sinead farley. A player who has been around women's soccer much longer she played in the previous women's soccer league Women's professional soccer. That's the predecessor to that. Nws l. sushi had been around women's soccer for a long time. So they have very different career trajectories but they were still sort of fringe players on the thorns. So as for the coach paul riley his career trajectory. How would you describe that kaelin. Where did he start in the league. What's his reputation. Ben paul riley is someone who has also been in women's soccer for a long time he also coached in the previous league and that is where the situation with sinead farrelly actually started. It started before they even got s- portland but paul riley someone who had built a really big reputation as someone who had he had a coaching school Soccer school he had built the sort of soccer empire and he was a very successful coach In the previous league he got his start in the wfl when he joined the portland thorns so it was actually the portland thorns that brought him into the nws l. And you know you can't help but think if the portland thorns had handled the complaints against him differently You now how different things would have gone. Because he has since that complaint was filed in twenty fifteen he eventually wants to the western new york clash which turned into the north carolina courage and with those seems he won several championships and shields and he considered one of the best coaches in the league. Many people considered him the best coach in the league yet. A very high reputation. And so that just made it all the more shocking. When all of this came out yes so when. The players made their formal complaints about riley in two thousand fifteen. What did the thorns do as an organization in response. What do we know about that now. I think that's where we still have a lot of questions. Monash shems said. She filed her complaint a few days later she was contacted and she was interviewed. Sinead farley was interviewed but it doesn't sound like other players on the team were interviewed. Alex morgan helped monash him. Filed a complaint. Alex morgan do about what was going on in the team did not interview her either way. Some sort of investigation did happen within one week of monash filing that complaint hall riley's contract was allowed to expire and the thorns issued a press release thanking him for his service. It didn't seem like there was any other reason than onfield results. The thorns had missed playoffs. The only time the team has ever misfly. Offs gavin wilkinson. The gm of thorns had weeks earlier. Said they were hint. He sort of hinted that they were doing that anyway. So nothing seemed to mess. So paul riley was allowed to just walk away without anyone knowing what happened. He told the athletic when he was originally contacted about the stories. He said that he wasn't reprimanded in any way. So there are a lot of questions about what that investigation was but either way at the end of the day the thorns quietly let him leave and then he was quickly hired by the western europe. Lash and you have to think that the flash would've reach out to the thord sock about it. The flash admitted that they knew this investigation happened so there are a lot of questions about people knowing about this but not actually doing very much about it and the language that the team used at the time which is an expiring contract. You know there was that press release that was complimentary. Has their language around. That event changed since will merritt paulson issued an open letter to fans were. He essentially apologize and he said that they handled it. The wrong way But they still maintain that it was a thorough investigation and that they did everything right except for not making it more publicly known what had actually happened. You know the north carolina courage their owner. Put out a statement on wednesday saying that he was aware of the investigation but he had been assured that paul riley was in good. Sandy he very conspicuously does not name who assured him that but there are questions about who decided that what paul riley did wasn't bad enough that he shouldn't continue getting jobs in the nws l. And so what does paul riley said on his own behalf. Response these allegations and what happens next in terms of like further criminal or civil investigation on that when the original report came out monash sinead farley. They chose to tell their stories to the athletic who then reached out paul riley and ask them some questions and he essentially denied the allegations. He said he had never had sex with any of his players. He didn't take his players out drinking. He denied the the biggest parts of the story. We haven't heard anything since the article has come out. But there are now a wave of investigations that are happening into this The thorns are revisiting. Thirteen thousand fifteen investigation. They say that they've brought in outside investigators to look into their investigation and to look in the situation again the nws l. has said they are investigating and us. Soccer has said they are investigating bringing in. Sally yates to investigate. Not just the but any other examples of abuse happening in the end. Wfl so this is launched You know a big response even fica the governing body of world soccer who we would not normally think of The watchdogs of the sport that we want them to be but they are actually even getting involved too so hopefully this means that some of the questions that we have that still linger will eventually be answered. Yeah the nwf sell kaylynn. It does feel like it is scrambling here. I mean the commissioner of the league is now the former commissioner of the league. Lisa baird who resigned last friday. What happened with her. So after mono- shem and sinead farley stories came out. Lisa baird issued a statement saint. She was shocked by these new allegations and she was going to get to the bottom of it. But then alex morgan. On twitter pulled out the receipts and said no actually sinead farley emailed you in april telling you that the twenty-fifth investigation did not look into all the things that paul riley had done. It was insufficient and it needs to be reopened and lisa barred did not want to reopen the investigation. She said it had been handled. The matter settled she ended her email to sinead farley. By saying thank you again for your email and i wish you the best. It was very dismissive so once. Alex.

"So there's a lot of opportunities for that and it's so important. Now that we don't have in-person precinct tabulation. I can't tell you how important it is and don't depend on me to to be the one to go look i. It's really hard. And but i do it and but if a lot of people did it a little bit at the time it would be really great. And that's what. The league of women voters can do primarily is to be there and understand. What's happening. When i go to watch every day i find something that's not correct. It could be done better. It's not legal. Whatever it's always something and it gets corrected. Because i know how to i know how to voice. I know what's true. And i know what needs to be done and i can explain it to the official and they always appreciate that input. And that's what makes elections healthy is interaction from public officials. Elections belong to the public. They belong to the league. Women voters do not belong to the officials and officials have basically the system has changed such that officials see themselves in charge. They have a staff of people. The staff of people controls a bunch of election judges who are following rules and decisions or are escalating up to the election official. It's not the way it should be. Election judges are called judges for a reason. Judges make decisions based on the law. Not based on what somebody told them to do. So that's the law in the rules. The rules are made by secretary of state. We voters can also go read that they proposed election rules. That are coming out right now. I hope that this podcast doesn't come out after the rules are already approved. But the watching the for rulemaking and making public comment on rules is really important. "On these athletes with talk questions. Yeah absolutely. I think this is a really key question. Historically these pressures have absolutely been to grow the league to get interest to have partnerships with sponsors. And that's the function they've served particularly growing leagues. Women's leagues have used this access in really important ways in terms of growth. One of the conversations that has been happening is is is has outlived its function because many people feel like. It's redundant questions. It's poking and prodding. I talked to my co host jessica luther in many journalists who were wrestling with this other ways. Because i think that they see a possibility in these pressures where there is access where there is not prescribed questions where there is a chance to actually perhaps hold people accountable or ask questions that might have been otherwise. Pushed aside by handlers. I'm gonna. I think that that is really valid but also idealized way of how these pressures actually function to your point. The media is overwhelmingly way overwhelm. The older will overwhelmingly male. There's a fight for her marginalize sports report ac- even in those rooms. I'm and i think that the dynamic within those spaces doesn't live up to this kind of ideal of accountability access and oftentimes becomes about quickly turning out and perpetuating narratives asking the same question and then it sticks in their one of the things they only said was. I've been battling depression since the us open in two thousand eighteen. Right which is when she says serena and Launched onto the scene one one that slam but of course there was a narrative about three knows actions during the match. She was crying fans were booing her and every time they play every time she's back does open this gets regurgitated questions about it and i think it's very telling that she pointed that out because it points to this point about how these narratives right continue and continue and continue With little you know stopping to consider what harm or what cost to the athlete. And yet it was serena who was among the superstars who came out in support of naomi. Osaka this is what she said. The only thing i feel is that i feel for naomi. I feel like. I wish i could give her a hug. 'cause i know what it's like like i said i've been in those positions we have different personalities and people are different. Not everyone is the same. I'm thick you know other people are dead and so everyone is different in. Everyone handles things differently. So you know you just have to let her handle it the way she wants to. In the best way that she thinks she can and That's the only thing i can say. I think she's doing the best that she can. So that serena williams and of course. The williams sisters really helping among a few other african americans in tennis to break the color barrier in what was a really white sport and the significance Professor of naomi osaka and descendant of well as japanese. Her father haitian american She is a black woman who is breaking so many barriers. I think she's the highest paid woman athlete in the world. Right now What this means the kind of pressure being brought on her and if young african american women see even her she gets fine. She even said on those fines that the french open applied to her. She asked that they be given to mental health organizations. The money they made off of her. Yeah absolutely i mean. I think there's two really important things here that you just brought up one absolutely. Naomi has been in this tennis. Space that we know has had a great deal of scrutiny. For venus and serena williams for sloan through our cocoa gov for for herself in a myriad of ways And i think that entering into that space you are moments where i only tried to disrupt kind of conventional narratives they're pushed back at even framing of questions When people said all your japanese always around them to she's haitian she insisted on her blackness being recognized when she wore masks and terminal the astern. Postgame well what does it mean. What do these masked means you. And she explained this talked about this before and she said well. What does it mean to you. She flipped back on the report. And i think that there are. These were the ways that she had already slightly disrupted our when she stopped playing last august with a number of other athletes instead. There's more important things to do than for you to watch me play tennis. So we've already seen her take on this role and kind of push the status quo in these ways. But i think it really is important to map this onto to other conversations. One is black athletes Who are continuing to insist on their humanity being recognized. Who continue to say we're not just here to entertain you and to push back on what is seen as entitlement. What people are owed of their labor and athletes are saying. My labor is my citizens on the court. But you're already privy to my way to my to my injury history to my body and then also to my mind with these probing questions and whether it's protesting or speaking out about fan abuse which we're seeing using as well or this conversation and i always having the underlying point that they're pushing back on through these moments is to say we are fully human and this is our job and we don't have to actually go along with racial abuser. We don't have to sacrifice our mental health. And i think that's a really important on through line that we see happening here so you can look at people like marshawn lynch kyrie irving natasha cloud. Who refuse to do. Wnba pressures unless they were about gun. Violence employs brutality. As a kind of Longer history of that but that second part about black women is also really important to there's ongoing conversations about black women's mental health on. We saw this topic also come up. When megan markle disclosed her depression anxiety. And i think that this is a really important growing conversation. Some people some social scientists have called mental health crisis that the trope of a strong black woman who's tasked with doing labor who simultaneously hyper visible and invisible. Means that there's really high rates of depression of anxiety and too often not enough mechanisms for help a very low number black women therapy providers for instance and so i think that part that point array of what this conversation does how it moves the needle and how these black women celebrities and athletes can play a really important role in pushing that conversation as well. We want to thank you so much. Mirrors davis for joining us assistant professor of history and women's gender and sexuality studies at penn state. University co host of the sports podcast. Burn it all down and boy what What a only said in her silence last year at the us open donning seven masks bearing the name of a black person who was killed. Brianna taylor mclean. I'm at arbery. Martin george floyd for landau castille and tamir rice. Almost all killed by police when we come back. We look at the link between.

You don't like the statistics for rape and sexual falsely somebody you know both east roaming and it's incredibly you. It breaks your self confidence. Break your sense of ability to trust especially because they're people you know. Yeah great. great deal of guilt. I and this is the thing that i found myself and i talked with other france or something like that. It's somehow we interpreted us scene. It's our fault allowed ourselves. Taken advantage shop Which is unfair right. We do want to feel like we have control over who. We leaden to our lives at the same time. They're very good liars out there and also a lot of learning life learning happens through interruptions so for people to somehow blame us for not having perfect friends people who will take advantage after. They've gotten to known us again. I just feel like okay. Well how conservative your life has to be in order to not let anyone who might take advantage of you in any way. You're pretty much like louis. Post herself of lebanon a hole in order for that. So i think that some of the frustrations rather than talk with the people who perpetrate these sexual assaults than sexual violence in breaking of boundaries. What the heck these men are doing or what. What were these perpetrators these these predators doing rather than to ask with the victims are doing to somehow deserve it.
