Shelby county sheriff Floyd Weiner says they each violated multiple policies by failing to keep their body cameras activated after they went to the location where Tyree Nichols had been beaten by 5 Memphis police officers. Kentucky's highest court has allowed a near total abortion ban to remain in effect. Correspondent Norman hall reports. The Kentucky Supreme Court has refused to halt the state ban that has largely been in place since roe versus wade was overturned. The court was weighing challenges to the band and a separate one that outlaws abortion after the 6th week of pregnancy. Abortion rights groups responded to the court's ruling by saying the fight over the issue is far from over the court itself made that clear. It ordered a lower court to consider constitutional issues and the court's deputy chief wrote that Thursday's ruling doesn't settle the issue or bar future litigation. The justices ruled on narrow legal issues that left unanswered the larger constitutional questions about whether access to abortion should be legal in the bluegrass state. "How are you doing, Mike? Rich doing great, buddy. How are you? I am doing great. Let's jump right into it with both feet. How did the best you can tell? The resolution between the league, Players Association and deshaun Watson come out. Well, it was a week ago right now that I was anticipating that appeals officer Peter Harvey would potentially drop the hammer on a full year suspension. Keeping deshaun Watson from playing last Friday night in Jacksonville and the preseason opener. And it was right around this time, maybe an hour or two from now that someone said to me, hey, they're talking settlement. Peter Harvey isn't going to rule doesn't want to rule until the two sides have had a chance to work this out. And that was the first tangible sense we had that even at a time when the NFL had everything it needed. It had exactly the ammunition from judge Robinson's ruling to impose whatever suspension it wanted to impose. That was when we backed off from thinking that a suspension was coming, something more than 6 games, much more than 6 games. And then it trickled into Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Now, along the way, we had the Friday night interview of deshaun Watson with a DD kinko baller from the team hotel in Jacksonville where he apologized to the women. He impacted with his behavior and it felt like an effort to throw in all of branch to the NFL to show that he was ready to concede. He was ready to accept responsibility. He was abandoning the talking points of. I didn't harass anyone to disrespect anyone. I didn't assault anyone and his lawyer saying all along that all the women who were accusing him of wrongdoing were lying that they were backing off from that in the hopes of reaching some sort of an agreement so that he wouldn't be out for the entire year. And as the week went on, they finally got to a point where they found acceptable middle ground. There's a lot of conspiracy theories about how they got to 11. I think it's very simple. The union was dug into ten, the league was dug in at 12. And it's not like you can negotiate half of games. It's not like he shows up third quarter of the week 13 game against the Texans. I mean, you just have to pick a number. And they settled on 11. And I think he acknowledged yesterday and his willingness to pay the fine was part of the way to get him back on the field more quickly. Higher fine, less games. More games, lower fine. He was willing to pay basically half of what he made last year. By not playing to get back after 11 games. So I think it was that simple. And for whatever reason, the league didn't want to issue a ruling didn't want to invite a federal court battle just wanted it to be over and move on. So this is not my first rodeo, nor it is yours, sir. So, normally, when this happens, when the league and a player come to a settlement like this, and the league gets stern or disciplined and originally scheduled or announced, the player involved must admit wrongdoing must say something along the lines of I am sorry for what I did. I will address it. I will come back a better person and I accept what I did. And Watson did accept responsibility in a written statement. And did say he's going to come back a better person in a written statement and did say the exact opposite when a live microphone was put in front of him, mere minutes later, what is the league do about that? Do you think Mike? That's a great question. And for now, the league has said nothing about it. I would suspect that there were some four letter words uttered at three 45 Park Avenue yesterday. Not parked. Frankly? Not park. Although

"Me said the same thing. They said you're laughed, as I said, yeah, look at that. Practice makes permanent. Becky is both the elite analyst slash the agent in every hype person in every regard Becky midge. We are sitting here and they remarkable moment in American sports history. Last weekend, the NWSL kicked off its record tenth season and we're going to jump into the specifics of the campaign ahead in a moment, but first, let's just take a minute to reflect on that ten years because it's not something ever to take for granted. It's predecessors lasted three years and we know no leagues rise is straight line. There's always profound complications growing pains along the way. Becky, you've been there from the very beginning, back when the minimum salary was $6000 a season. For the inside, you've seen fire, you've seen Rey. I'm sure there are moments when you thought this league would not could not make it. Where are we right now in terms of the development? I would say we have come so far from year one to year ten that it's been probably an exponential growth and there have definitely been times for those ten seasons where I was very concerned for the longevity of the league. And I can remember specifically at the end of year 5 with Boston, I believe, had just folded, so there was going to be an expansion draft for the Boston players and then Kansas City we had no ownership. And so I remember being in my apartment with nickel barnhart and literally just being on the phone trying to figure out, are we going to be joining another expansion draft? Will we have new ownership? Is someone going to swoop in at the last second? And as a member of the USW and TPA, I hear things behind the scenes as well. And so there were real concerns about other ownerships as well. And so the fact that we've made it to year ten is wonderful and it feels like it's solidifying each year as we go, which for me as a player who was a part of the WPS that it folded after the third year to have year ten really is a testament to women's soccer and interest that it's garnering in this country. Midge, you are a senior in high school back in 2013, the first season of NWSL. And when you're in college, you spend the league's early seasons playing on the same fields as those Boston breakers, May they rest in peace, who used Harvard's facilities to train. You've been in the league now. It's 6 seasons. How does a reality of the league match up to what you dreamed it would be as a college kid? Well, as a college kid, I think I actually had a very clear idea of where the league was. And I remember just hoping to get drafted to the Boston breakers so that I could finish my semester at school. And go to pre season. And I thankfully, I did, so I didn't have to leave school earlier or anything like that. Now it's just it's surpassed all of my expectations. It's really heartening to see. Becky, the league still so young. It's not even had its bat mitzvah ten seasons as one would expect there are still so many growing pains. This is a season of newness in so many ways. We've got new franchises, new CBA, new commissioner, Washington, spirit has at last new ownership, new female ownership, the mighty Michelle Kang. We also have the darkness, the continuing ongoing revelation of coaches, creating truly horrific cultures of discrimination of harassment of abuse inside. Does it feel like the best of times the worst of times? It feels a little bit of both to be perfectly honest. I think, you know, you wake up in the morning and you check social media, you check the newspaper and you're just waiting to see something about the NWSL right now because it's just been a lot of a lot of coverage for kind of the worst reasons. And then you also watch LA and that knew that opening game and all the ownership on the field and how happy everyone was and the pax stadium and you're like, wow, this is really amazing. And so it's really an emotional roller coaster in the league right now. And I think we're trying to set up the infrastructure with the CBA by getting the bad ownership, the bad agents out of the league, but that's an ongoing process. And so it's very up and down right now. I think it's a good microcosm of what the world is like right now. You have to balance a lot of challenges and a lot of potential and opportunities that you have to do great things. And I think year ten, we've come a long way and making sure that we are protecting players, making sure that we are making an avenue for players to come to the league, making it advantageous from internationals to come, making it look desirable, but we have a lot to do to still make it the best it can be. If you are both incredibly active, Becky, you are the president of the national women's soccer league Players Association. Midge, you remember the collective bargaining agreement negotiating committee. You're also on the board of the black players collective. There's so much that needs to develop and build and change. What would you both like to see happen in terms of the priority of big issues to be tackled as a league enters its next phase? I would say just right off the bat, just player safety and well-being. I think that first and foremost, you need to go to work and you need to be able to feel safe and to not have to worry about all these other things and just to be a professional athlete, which has not been the case for the ten years that we've been a part of this league. I would add in I think something that I'm always vocal about. I think that there's a culture of paternalism.

"And I think the Padres are a team that are primed to win if they just, you know, again, if they get Nelly Cruz, that's gonna be a scary lineup. And again, we don't even know what the Giants are gonna be right now. This is a team that has, you know, won the division last year best record in baseball and we're barely even mentioning them, and we have no idea what they're even gonna put out this next season. The only team we can all agree on in the national league west that's gonna suck is the rockies. Rightfully so, poor buffet. If there's anything that this show should be titled, it should be titled poor, but. I'd be okay with that. Last thing before we, before we shut it down, we mentioned at the beginning of the show, we kind of glossed over it, but the CBT and the CBA, I should say. You know, we finally got a deal yesterday on day 99 of the lockout, excited, can not wait for Major League Baseball to be back. Players already showing up at spring training. Let's go. Opening day, April 7th. But the thing that almost blew the whole thing up was this introduction of an international draft. And this has been something that's been mentioned many times over the years. And here's I want to be completely honest. As much as I feel like I'm an expert and well versed in just about all of the everything involved in the industry, the only thing I truly do not feel well versed in is an international draft and the pitfalls that come with it. Here's what I think right out the gate. I obviously as a player tend to think that the international draft might be very negative towards players and here's my reasoning for it. No other reasoning other than the owners tried to sneak it in last second. That's all the information I needed to know me like we need to look at this long and hard. Well, listen, I think you're right to feel that way because it did feel like a kind of an ambush to some degree. And here's where I think the international draft has positives and it has negatives. I think when you look at it from a lot of the Latin players that have come up in through the way that the system is right now. There is a lot of goodwill in terms of seeing guys, you know, from the Dominican, from Venezuela, from Cuba, be able to have an opportunity to get out and play Major League Baseball. This system has provided that. However, the system is also faulted in a lot of ways, right? I mean, there's a lot of corruption. You've heard the term biscotti. Throwing her out a lot, which have profited off of some of these same players to come up. However, there's a trust issue there. I think a lot of the guys just, they've come up in this system and they don't necessarily trust that this system that desist this international system will be as much of a benefit for them. I think they look at Puerto Rican baseball and how for a long time, that was that was the cream of the crop in terms of Latin Latin ball players and since it's become, you know, quote unquote, Americanized, they feel like it's fallen off a little bit, right? And so I think a lot of the Venezuelan Dominican guys look at that and we don't want to go down that route. Now on the flip side of that, you got a lot of American guys who don't even get the opportunity to be in the draft until they're 18. You know, out of high school. And a lot of those opportunities get eaten up by, you know, being able to go overseas and bring guys in, sign them as early as 16. Sometimes, you know, reportedly earlier. And so when you have a body like the major league Players Association, that is filled with guys from all over the place. You can see how it can cause a divide, right? And I think what the owners did there was they kind of threw a grenade in there at the end, right? And I think the union did a good job of being able to salvage it by saying, you know, all right, let's talk about this because there are some benefits to possibly doing it. Tony Clark came out today and said he does not like to draft. Period. So you see why he's feeling like that at 30 over 30% of that Players Association body are Latin guy. So you can see why that is something that at the very least needs to be studied because you're going to need some comfort from those guys who have benefited from the system that it is. But I think those guys also recognize there are some shortcomings to the system that they have right now. And I think the best, the best outcome was what they got here. They got till June 25th to kind of study this our July 25th, I think, to the study this and figure out the best ways to go. Because certainly, that's something the owners want in return for giving up that draft pick compensation. Well, it's going to be interesting going forward. And if there's one thing I think people, I hope noticed this during this whole CBA negotiations is kind of seeing that baseball, not just Major League Baseball. I want to talk about all of baseball is not quite the free market that you might think it is. You know, obviously Major League Baseball's antitrust exemptions allows it a lot of extra things. On top of that though, keep in mind, Major League Baseball, as far as I know, is the only professional.

Because question number one, we saw last year that the minor league contraction happened 43 teams cut from the Major League Baseball's affiliations, a whole basically level of minor league baseball, pretty much short season 8 ball was practically killed off. Reshuffling in the entire minor leagues, no more PCL, no more international league, no more Texas league, all these historic leagues that have lasted over a hundred years. They've all been divvied up into triple-A west triple-A east and double-A south and all that. Now they're saying they're gonna finally provide housing for minor leaguers, and here's my question. Is this the thing where it's gonna be like a stipend for players? Are teams gonna make minor league teams like buy an apartment complex and they have to run it themselves? Is this gonna become like a team barracks situation? Or is this going to be a really legitimate housing situation for players to legitimately have a normal life? I certainly hope it's the latter, but you're a 100% right to have those type of questions, right? Because you and I've been through it before. We've seen in the past how it's gone. I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with a team brand barracks or whatever you want to call it. It should just be a legitimate setup. Now, the devil's in the details. As always, so we'll have to wait and see what that looks like. But at least on the surface, it looks like a moving a step in the right direction, something that I think most of us who've been through the minor league experience with would say, yeah, this is well well overdue. Yes. It is very well overdue because listen in case those of you who don't have never listened to this show before or don't really know the plight of minor leaguers. Now I spent the majority of my time in the minor leagues. I was I was basically crash Davis, which is something I'm actually more and more older I get, the more proud of I actually am. Yeah, I'm not. I had my month in Major League Baseball. My one month in the show, I got my few at bats and it's almost like my entire career. I get to be the guy on the bus with the guitar like crash Davis saying, yep, I've been with the show. Yep, you know, you don't gotta carry your own bags in the show, which is true, by the way. But yeah, it was awesome. But living that minor league lifestyle, you know, I've talked about on this show that I had one season where I was so broke that I had to live in my car in the park team parking lot in triple-A and Tucson at kino stadium. Like I had no choice. I had no money. You know, and the teams were not very helpful back then. You know right. You know, if you moved to a different level, you had to out of your own pocket, ship your own car, which is more than your entire paycheck. You know, I think this is a great step in the right direction. It's a first step, and that's the thing I want fans to really understand. This is just a first step into a much better area. I think, you know, livable wages need to be more taken care of. I think that there's a lot of more things that need to be addressed, but the fact that they're going to take care of housing. I hope they do a great job on it. But like we just said, those questions that I have that you and I don't know the answers to yet. I think do need to be addressed. And I hope they're addressed fast and I honestly think Major League Baseball has in more than enough money to take care of all of this and take care of every one of the players. And I hope they do, because it's the right thing to do. Yeah, well, here's one thing I can guarantee. Jeff bassin is certainly not gonna let it go. So he is going to be on top of, you know, I would say I would assume I should say that he's gonna be on top of it because it's important. As you said, it's a good first step, but there needs to be some type of follow up just because you want to make sure that it is going to be done in the right way. Now, at this point, you're hoping Major League Baseball has heard enough from some of the minor leaguers in terms of because with people a lot of people housing part is a huge portion of your paycheck. A lot of times when you're there. So if it can be done right, this could go a long way and keeping some money and making it at least closer to livable with the wages that they're getting at the mily global. Yeah, and I think I mentioned it to you on this show. I played in the Texas league championship with the San Diego Padres in 2011, and this was our House. And we had a house filled with high round draft guys. But this is how we had to live because we just didn't have a lot of money. It was me, I made the big leagues, Daniel Robertson made the big leagues, Josh Spence made it to the big leagues, miles Michaelis still in the big leagues. Jet jerko, still in the big leagues, we were all sharing a couch and sharing beds because we just none of us had the money at the time to get a more livable place. And we just and we got up in the morning and went and played our Texas league championship game and those were a whole house filled with guys that made it to the big leagues and a couple of them were high round draft picks. That's just how tricky it is to live a more livable and normal life during the professional baseball season, especially in the minor leagues. So I'm glad Major League Baseball is making an addressing of this. I think it's a great step forward. And I truly hope I truly hope Major League Baseball really takes seriously investing in their players. Yeah, no, I a 100% agree. It's been long enough. I think listen, I think the more the young players have spoken out, the better things have gotten. So I hope they recognize the power that they do hold. And they do, they hold quite a bit of power. And you know what else holds power? You Tony Gwynn junior? Where can people find you, baby? You find me on Twitter, at Tony gwyn junior, you can follow me on IG at Tony underscore Gwen junior. Also, now that I'm not doing the broadcast for the Padres since they are no longer playing, you can catch me. I'm going to Chris Monday through Friday three to 7 here at San Diego on 97 three to fam fan or you can catch it on the Odyssey app as well. I can not stress enough. You guys need to listen to Gwen and Chris on the Odyssey app, any chance you get, it's an unbelievable show. I pop on as much as I possibly can. I usually do it just to piss off an annoy Tony because he finally like gets rid of me for four days. Gonna ruin this show too. My favorite thing to do. You guys got it. You're always welcome on the show, Cody. Don't you dare threaten me with a good time, tell me how dare you do that. Guys, I'm Cody decker, you can find me on Twitter at decker 6 and of course anti hero baseball on Instagram. That is it for us this week. We will be back next week,.

"So dan. You're our guy on the sports memorabilia. Beat which is a beat that has mushroomed in last. It feels like year or two now. Every time i look at feels like there are insane headlines that i don't fully understand. Has it felt that way to you recently. Yeah i'll be. I'll be honest like covering this a wake up some mornings and it's like oh i guess that's happened. That's the real thing that exists. Dan hey ducky is a reporter for espn and a trading card collector since childhood. I don't know if you remember this. Seminal classic vegas vacation of chevy chase tries to plug the hoover dam up with a piece of gum and everything goes haywire. And it's a little bit like that. Yeah it feels like the floodgates have opened the damn has broken and tops is sort of the entity. I wanna start with here at the top because they are under water right now dan in some sense that is seemingly pretty existential for them. I mean this is a legendary company in the world of sports. Cards and a newcomer to the industry has essentially taken their lunch. What was the big announcement there. It was really surprising. Tops is getting muscled out by genetics. Absolutely crazy news fanatics agreed to an exclusive deal with major league baseball in the major league players association tops for the first time in over seventy years will not produce major league baseball cards. This is a really really big deal. I don't think anybody saw happening. Or coming tops. Is you know for some just as synonymous with baseball as you know apple pie and all that good stuff. Yeah are very upset. That's ops is being pushed out is a sad said. I'm wearing my hat in honor of tops. It's can we go a day without any hobby drama or do we have to just have crap all the frick around baseball for seventy years. They've been producing chords for baseball since. Nineteen fifty one. So it's it's it's shocking. It really is. They've got other stuff. This is a huge votes who accompanied that was just about to go public. So you obtained this internal memo. That had been circulating around major league baseball dan. What details did that memo reveal. Are the details of this deal now. That's shaking up a couple of industries at the same time You know the memo was the pa memo that was going around and There are two things really essential in. This is that Fanatics had done a deal with the mlb and the mlb. If you have a deal with the league it means that you can put logos on the on the cards. We have a deal. With the the players union association you can use players likenesses so there are companies out there that have deals with players unions but they don't have deals with leagues so they can produce cards with players likenesses. You can have a mike trump card but no angels low basically. Yeah without that licensing deal dan. You can't use the logos the symbols. You end up in that weird knockoff world. We see in movies. Sometimes where yeah. I'm pretty sure that's like the pittsburgh steelers but it's just another yellow and black team. That's sort of imitating them instead. Exactly it's like when you watch a sitcom and someone's using what's clearly a mac and there's a sticker right over the apple exact same thing that the big part of this memo was that fanatics had reached a deal with both players union and bama beat layers union deal starts earlier that starts in twentieth twenty-three while the top steel with mlb runs through twenty twenty five. So we're looking at kind of a weird next few years you know. The memo's say this deal is ten times larger than any of the unions agreed to and it's expected to generate roughly two billion dollars by twenty. Forty five you know. That's notable considering top speed. The twenty point four million dollars in licensing fees last year is the largest some of any mvp licensee and that was up one point six seven million dollars a year before so what it boils down to is that in this day and age everybody wants a bigger piece of the pie and it seems like the mobile thought they could get that with fanatics for tops. Then if they don't have major league baseball as a client what is their business of the big one for them. And i will totally admit to a bias. Here is a former college. Soccer player is that they have soccer They have kundus legal cards. They have champions league. Mls which is you know. It's it's no small chunk of change. I got this email from ebay the week that said that Soccer cards up eight hundred fifty two percent year over year on their site and with the world cup little of a year way and messy leaving barcelona for psg and christiano renaldo. Sort of on the outside you they. There's a lot happening in that industry but it doesn't even compare to what they had with baseball and so the financial hit top stand. I know there was this other deal that you had mentioned that was set to make tops and even bigger winner in all of this but instead this happens and now what is lost yes so so. Talks was a public company for a very long time. Went private in the late. Two thousand ten. I can't exactly remember when the date was but they were due to go public again with this huge merger with moderate capital. That was it was one point three billion dollar evaluation. It was going to be tremendous for them. Michael eisner was do almost six hundred million dollar payday. Yeah that's the former chief of disney. By the way now the chairman at tops right right and that that also really really quickly think within forty eight hours of the memo going out that public move was mixed and it's off the table now. Wow this is not only tradition being upended but also hundreds of millions billions of dollars. How does tops. How does michael eisner get blindsided to this extent. What's his version of events here. Because i imagine this is the single nightmare scenario. There's reporting out there. That stated he had this really tumultuous call with rob manfred and manfred. Apparently just bluntly responded that it was better for the shareholders in the long run which it says something doesn't it yes well. It says a lot about fanatics. Dan fanatics. I mean look. This is the sports apparel the jersey clothing company. I thought at least. And then i see headlines there that wait a minute. This is suddenly like one of the most impressive companies that exists in america. Right now trending in a way. That seems position them. I don't know towards like outer space fanatics has sort of really interesting origin story. There founded in one thousand nine hundred five as a brick and mortar store in jacksonville. Strip mall a jacksonville. Strip mall birthing anything resembling what we're currently seeing out of their wall street valuation. It is unbelievable. it really is They had some success as they were a payroll. They they opened more locations. They acquired a bunch of ecommerce property notably in college. Football by two thousand thirteen fabrics is has three billion dollar evaluation largely on apparel and jay z. Suddenly is involved in.

"Will come to college football. But this time it's going to be official that comes your way in five minutes, only this kind of Patriot game could happen. With the New England Patriots involving the word misunderstanding and Covid 19 protocols Cam doing the one that's in the center of this, where he wanted to be or not. He's going to remain away from the pages until Thursday due to a misunderstanding. Quote unquote on Covid 19 tests conducted away from NFL facilities in a statement from the Patriots read, and I quote he received many Cam Newton daily covid tests, which were all negative. Due to a misunderstanding about tests conducted away from NFL facilities and as required by the NFL and the National Football League Players Association protocols can will be subject to the five day entry cadence process before returning to the facility, end quote. This to me. Freddy is all about reps and availability. Absolutely. And if your cam and somebody in your camp did not get The Information correctly about what you were supposed to do while you were away from the facility going to an eye doctor or a dentist or a chiropractor, Whatever. Then that would be furious. If you are cams, people, and you had the misunderstanding than upon the Patriots. You know, maybe even weak forward Tom Brady comes back to 10. I don't know. Then I started Mac Jones for But if Cam struggles early I mean, I think there might be a short leash. I mean, not because Mac Jones has looked good also against those that vanilla bean defense, right? We're all seeing in preseason. But Mac Jones got 31 sessions today with the starters. "He just graded every twenty. Twenty one draft prospect played in the summer league. That was an intense process of a lot of watching summer league video so raphael. We talked about those guys who outside of those top nine really stood out to you. I think i know what you're going to end. I think i know who your answer is going to be on this one outside of those top nine. Who is your guy in the summer league that you were impressed with well. I'm going to curb by. Won't go my guy i but i thought bones highland played very very. Well i i saw you gave him a and i thought it was well well deserved and i think that he went to like a perfect team. Am i appeal. Yokich is the perfect player for a combo guard. A guy that completely a little point but he doesn't have to have the pressure of being a table center in. I think plan with yokich and denver. I think he's gonna crack the rotation. I mean we saw marcus. Howard play as a rookie know those due to injuries. But i think highlands highlands gonna make an impact as a rookie. And i think he helped denver. I thought he was one of the more impressive rookies and proud. He's a guy that's going to outperform his draft position in again. Sometimes it is that fit. And i agree with you on bones highland at that moment. He was drafted by the nuggets. I'm like that makes perfect sense what they need how he plays. I could see him playing lou. Lou williams sorta six microwave scores sort of off the bench. You're right with yokich on the floor and jamal murray. Whenever he's back and healthy he doesn't need to be a lead ball handler for this team. Though i will point out he had four point eight assists the game. Which which you know. He showed some abilities to be elite ball handler in the summer league. I don't think that's primarily. How they're gonna use him in denver. But i agree with you. Both highland was one of the guys that i just again pleasantly surprised. And anytime you get a guy named bones in the league and it looks like they're gonna stick. You've got to be pretty happy. Tim calmly again. I generally think he's a really great drafter and general manager. We'll talk about a guy that maybe a little bit later. That i think maybe he made a mistake on. But it's pretty rare that denver. The denver makes mistakes utah. Yeah yeah unless they're trading the guy to utah. I'm gonna. I'm gonna steal your thunder and talk about albertans. Goon for a second who goes sixteen and looks like the guys like john. Hollinger and kevin pelton some of the stats guys. That this guy is a top five pick. He certainly made them look good in the summer league and again that's always you know something that we have to put on there as a qualifier in the summer league sin goon looked like a top five pick in this draft at a basketball genius. Offensively rebounded the ball. Well shockingly i think was second among rookies in blocked shots per game. Which is not something that i necessarily saw coming. The passing was there. He just overall looked like he was more ready for this than anybody else. Some of that may be that the turkish league competition is actually stronger than the summer league competition so he was actually kind of moving down down division instead of a division which you normally would sort of expect for guys and so. Maybe that's part of it is well my only caveat. We did not really see him. Go up against the nba level strength size athleticism that. He's typically going to face undefeated. And i'm not talking about. Okay let's see if he can do it against anthony davis because i know almost nobody can do it against anthony davis but just in general most of the guys that he was dominating think about that pistons game where he worked over. Luca garza. okay. We already knew coming in that. Look garza defensively was going to have some issues. And so that's three matchup in the summer league and so i do want to before we annoy him as a complete steal of the draft. I do wanna see him against that. Nba level of athleticism and strengthen and link link. What did you think about. His performance at thought performance was great. Especially when you consider. He didn't get post touches and he was on a team with guards. That aren't table setters so there were plenty of plays again. I'm.

"Back with raphael barlow. Nba draft junkies. We were just talking about some of the top guys in the eastern conference. The top rookies. We talked about kid cunningham. Evan mobely jalen suggs scotty barnes. Let's just talk about the rest of the eastern conference rookie draft class for a minute. Who really stood out to you raphael. Who was who is a guy that you would sort of label a winner out of that class outside those top five guys myself. one luca. Garza wasn't impressive to me. All right look garza. Who was like pick fifty two by fifty to fifty two also for the detroit pistons. I also david manet and my draft grades thought he was incredible re questioned whether he was gonna have the nba athleticism to stay on the floor. Defensively we knew offensively. I really talented basketball player. But how was he going to be able to do that. he got in. He's got in great shape. You look so much better athletically than he looked at iowa. He's still not a great athlete by any stretch of the imagination but has got better. My question is we saw the toughness we saw the motor we saw up. Hardy played certainly the skill offensively. I still question. Can he guard anybody in the nba. Yeah it's a definite concerning the reason why he failed so low. But i mean if you look at the numbers and let's say he was a top five pick. You see the numbers of like fifteen points. Nine nearly ten revile host to assist game of black forty percent from three. You'd be raving if you got those numbers from top five but he's looking Bizarre is going to be questions that he doesn't have the sexiest game. And i was talking to a prospect in the draft and he missed dislike work out with him multiple times. He wasn't good. He was the worst athlete in every workout. We did. And i kept saying you know what i i believe that you put him in a workout setting. He's not going to look good. Maybe inspired shooting but put some butts in the seats. Light sauce referees. He's going to show you why he was so dominant in college. So i'm not really surprised by his performance of summer league but this is a summer league podcast so we're not really talking about the regular season so i'm curious to see how does translate but the pistons have taken this back. Backed back and taken. Like some tradition throwback high motor energy guys so Just based on a southerly at that he was like one of the best rookies. The one of mine though this again my cognitive is going to kick in here. Because i really liked impr- draft was miles mcbride For the knicks i. I didn't understand why he slid into the second round and the early returns for the knicks was. He was exactly what i thought he would be. He's absolutely a engaged. Almost vicious defender shot the ball. Well from three. I actually thought showed some ability play on the ball as as as a point guard is well. If you're a knicks fan. You have to pretty excited that. This is a guy that we got in the second round. I was very skeptical if you remember on draft night about the knicks draft. They didn't like that. They kind of moved out in one thousand nine hundred twenty one though. I did want them to draft. Mcbride their guy if you look at this quin. Grimes also played a joke by this. I thought played well. Jerko sims shot eighty-one percent from the field donkey and everything. It was a pretty good. You know the knicks draft looked fairly validated in the summer league What did you think about mcbride. I thought it was great. I went to the game against the lakers. And egypt showed the toughness the shot making ability and one of the things. I was curious to see coming into some league because we know yoko. Violence was likely going to be go back to barcelona or go to barcelona back much on so anything that he was drafted higher. Mcbride i wanted to see how they played both to and mcbride got the majority of the minutes and you'll go play lil when he was given an opportunity but it would have been tough to like not play mcbride major minutes and you're right. The knicks draft was not the sexiest on draft night. You had to question why. Why would they move down a man of other players that they got at at nineteen and then twenty one. I believe based on the southerly you can make. A case of their draft was stronger than the ones that we liked on draft night. Yeah absolutely. I mean if quinton grimes is gonna shoot like that and and play the way he played which is exactly why they drafted him in. Mcbride looks like a legitimate. Nba player at point guard. And then we saw improvement from manual quickly and obi top in a sophomore. This i think things just turned out well for the knicks. let's see again how it relates to regular season and not and top tiptoe coaching them as opposed to the coaching that they got in the summer summer league. There's gonna be some differences. There who struggled for you out of the rookies. was there. somebody that really stood out to you like wow. I'm a little bit disappointed. In what i saw from the summer league from the sky i in the east sparsest really really struggled. I thought everybody it's there are more guys that stood out to me. That played well. That struggled I honestly if i had to save the play. That was probably the most disappointed in. Was evan moberly but he didn't struggle..

Some Capitol Hill Lawmakers Back Amazon Workers' Attempt To Unionize
"Nearly six thousand amazon employees who work at a warehouse in bessemer alabama are voting by mail on whether to unionize. If they do this will be the first union amazon facility in this country. Here's jennifer bates. Who works there. I keep butterflies and butterflies. Normally come to calm me but hey this is my stomach faithful. It seems like it's getting bigger and bigger full of butterflies. Because there's no break in. Think i don't know how kogo nerve wracking. The election ends later. This month and i should mention. That amazon is a financial supporter of npr. But we cover them like any other company. Some lawmakers support the union. Including senator marco marco rubio or republican and of course president biden also michigan congressman andy levin earlier this month. He and a group of democrats traveled to bessemer. Good morning congressman. Good morning noel. How are you good thanks. What did amazon employees. They're tell you about why they want to unionize. Well you know a union election so often are about basic dignity and that was really true here. I was shocked to learn what it's really like in there They work in a facility. That's like fourteen football fields and it can take ten minutes to walk to a break room. They've to half hour breaks in a ten hour shift so they might get effectively ten hours to eat lunch be by the time they walk there and back lot of them. Don't feel like they can go to the bathroom. Except on their break. And they're watched and quantified every second they're monitored visually a listening geo positioning and every second they're not on task is measured and if they have a certain number of minutes off task in a week they could be fired sometimes might not even be a person involved it was really kind of dehumanizing to me. Here's the argument. That amazon makes amazon. Says look our employees. Earn fifteen dollars an hour which is a good wage in a place like bessemer alabama. Some of them have health benefits. 401k's essentially they have got the benefits that a union would get them. They don't need a union. What do you make of that argument. I'd like to tell that argument to any national football league player and the actor and a movie any presenter on major television or radio networks all of whom have a union every single one. The idea that unions are only for people who are the most poorly paid. It's ridiculous the one person who is unionized. That every airline is the pilot so this argument is ridiculous. These workers deserve a seat at the table to discuss a safe workplace. During a pandemic they deserve a seat at the table to have a workplace. That's human and a real person can go to and great make fifteen dollars. An hour amazon should pay them a lot more the owner of the company. The main owner had his wealth increase. Seventy eight billion dollars during a pandemic and they're about pay jeff bezos in their bag bragging about paying people fifteen dollars an hour there. What's wrong with workers having their own organization just that they can have input in their in in their work lives. And that's all these people are seeking is a seat at the table during this trip to alabama that you went on your colleague congressman jamaal. Bowman said this doesn't stop with amazon. He mentioned lift. Uber tesla and walmart as well. What is the ultimate goal here. The goal is for workers to be able to form a union and bargain collectively. If they darn well please. Noel were down to six percent of private sector workers in this country needing union. We're gonna pass the proactive in the congress and the president is going help. Lead into new era when workers can have a say at the table. It's long pastime in this country. Michigan congressman andy levin. Thank you

MLB To Try Experimental Rules This Year
"So here are some of the experimental rules that Major League baseball's tinker with this year. The minor league level. I think I'm about to say, like experimental drugs to help you deal with this situation. With the bank. So Major league Baseball is going to try. 15 2nd pitch clock. Let's start here. I mean, they've already been trying to tinker with this for a while. Pitch clock in the minors and trying to get this into the major leagues and the major League Players Association doesn't want it. But that's nothing new. I think it's a good idea. I don't see anything wrong with a pitch clock. Making sure pictures move quicker. Batters move quicker, and if you don't if you're not in the box or the pitches in off by 15 seconds, it's a ball or a strike, depending on the picture of the hitter. To me. I love the pitch clock. What do you think I do, too? It's just odd to me that here we are 2021. I feel like we've had the same pitch clock conversation for about five years. And I know the players association doesn't want it. But I don't even know why this is even being written about it. Still tinkering was they're changing the amount of seconds But we've been there. Done this with the pitch clock either. Make it happen, or don't Mortgage Ames govern to buying Elektronik Strike Zone So there was some light tinkering the last two seasons, I think, and now more expanded use of the Elektronik strikes only robot umpire now the way that this is Being implemented. It's not. There is a robot like Judy Jetson behind the plate or not. Judy Jetson, who's the robot from the Jetsons, the maid? Whatever the maid was. It's not like that's the robot behind the plate. It is an electronic strike zone and that a human empire behind the plate gets the read either Baller strike and calls it I guess they do have final say that the human Um, can override it but that he is getting fed the information from Elektronik Strike Zone again. I like this is well, considering how Much of a discrepancy There is with human Empire's I'm on board with this. What do you think? Well, two things number one. It's Rosie. The robot is bogus. Always out objections. I'd love the idea of robot umpires. My only question is when you start giving a guy like Angel Hernandez, let's say a chance to override Do empires. Egos get in the way, and they just don't care with robot is telling them And also is this going to be done quick enough where it's not going to slow down the game. All right away. You get something you're going strike Paul, and whatever Rosie the robot voice, and then they have to make that split decision whether to override it or not. I just I like the idea. But I think you're also giving umpires a chance to allow their egos to get in the way and make their own calls

"In december. We brought you the story of major league baseball recently announcing it would officially give the negro leagues major league status that meant it would recognize the stats and records of the roughly thirty four hundred black players who played in the negro leagues from nineteen twenty to nineteen forty eight. Since we brought you that news. We've gotten a more personal take on the story. Dennis la former negro league baseball player. Play one thousand nine hundred fifty. Three and fifty forward cargo american giants. Dennis is a former negro leagues player and president of yesterday's negro league players foundation. He's also the author of the book secrets of the negro baseball league as told by dennis. Biddle our friend callie. Crossley who hosted last week on the takeaway got a chance to sit down with bill a few days ago to reflect on the moment. I think it's a great thing to happen now. Should have happened years ago You know. I think about those players have passed on. They would have enjoyed being equal to something. They already knew and couldn't do anything about it. What they're doing a star which is great recognizing those great ball player did not have the opportunity to display their talents in the major league because of the color. Thus scam so because they're only recognizing the states and records from nineteen twenty to nineteen forty eight. How will the numbers add up then. Because we're we're not gonna know about the the stats of the players. Who came after and that's where it should have just said recognize and players that played in the negro baseball league as equal to the player in the major league. Because they were we were and we couldn't do anything about it. We can all play each other on the game that we loved. We had to strap to be better guest to prove hot. Greg we really are work. I think all players prepared officer young player they. They went through a lot and had nothing to look forward to. We knew we had a chance with jackie opening a door but before they had no chance. And that's what really bothers me when i say as okay about the stats but these men that live in now we have at least forty playoff still living around the country that played in the fifties. The league did not end in forty eight. It ended in nineteen sixty So since you played in the later years one thousand nine hundred fifty three. Can you tell me a little bit about your time playing in the league. Yes i came in on a time. When i knew i would be prepared for the major league. But he's older guy. You see what happened after. Jackie opened the door. Most of the guys. That was too old to go in at that. Time became coaches training managers and owners at that time and they were prepared a young player but a major league. This is something that was handed down to me. These men that gave so much to to the game of baseball the owner recognition that they could get would-be to say up pad hank aaron for the major leagues hank aaron banks and willie mays minute more than this is all the contribution that they felt that they had to the game baseball because they had no of course. How did they prepare you. You were quite young when you play our seventeen years old right out of high school and No scout scouted me. I'm from arkansas town in arkansas up. It's a no hitter. And i was recognized by a booking agent from the negro baseball league. Who asked me. How would you like to play in the row baseball. The i knew nothing about the negro baseball league. But i had to go from my hometown thousand miles of chicago the play in the negro baseball league and i'm grateful for the fact that that happened because i learned a lot about life. I was only seventeen years old. And i'll never forget players like double duty radcliffe and james belt at him to pompa bail and they put their arms around the young player and and and and for pad but what might come in other words. We had a chance to go to the major leagues. And i'm appreciative of that. Today and i noticed why years later. I became president of a foundation that was set up to recognize the living player of the negro baseball league. So you met jackie robinson. Can you tell us about yes. I became a free agent with the chicago cubs in nineteen fifty five amid jackie. And we had dinner together. Downtown chicago along with ernie banks and gene baker and roku manila. And i'll never forget that. And i read about it. I know we had gone through in the negro league. 'cause i don't do it two years myself. But when he said he said kia taking that writing a book or showing a movie. What i went through and being young man i got minuted. I i wanted to go back home to momma. I couldn't understand the treatment. We will get in. And i said to him mr robinson. Did you ever think about quitting. Because i did he said son. I thought about it every day. He said but i had made a promise that i will open a dose or other young black men play will be able to play in the major leagues jacket. Tola to me that something that always be a part of me and do you feel the lb decided to finally make this announcement to include the negro leagues now. Because it's been one hundred years or because of the racial uprisings or both reasons. I organized a lowest show brewer. We organize yesterday's negro league baseball player foundation and nineteen ninety. Six at that time was three hundred and fourteen of us still living around the country with no recognition and You know the players. They didn't know what to do. They just went off little jobs and things but mr brewer. He had been trying for years to get them together which was a hard thing to do even today with the player to player that still living because someone that come up off now now one hundred dollars but don't sign autographs and do the goal and you know they abon about to this kinda treatment and mr brewer always said he said if we stuck together as one we will be forced to reckon with. Do you feel the. Mlb can compensate the players who are still alive or their families. I really do. I don't know how they can do it. But you know reparation is a hard thing to talk about the days but those families should be considered. I don't know how they can do it I just want something right now. The players that are still living. I want some recognition. I won't monitor monitor that. They're giving these organization that opposed serving our history. Give it to the players still living. Make them a part of their and nineteen ninety nine eight. I a thanks to bush. Ceiling helped me help the organization get benefits. Seventy nine player. That were still living. They got the major league pension prone but the criteria that were four years in negro league and most of those players were dead and gone. Some a few of them did qualify. I asked commissioner to lord laura criteria to one year. If he would do that that would include every player that still living at played in the negro baseball league. But i have not heard back from him out to to. Do you think there's a chance that it could still happen. Given that there's a lot of attention to this move by the mlb. I'm hoping it will or mr bell..
