Cathy Horyn on Why Fashion Media Must Evolve

"Ala Kathy. I'm good you. You're in Virginia. Farm. Yeah. You're Minova Farm in Virginia and made avail in. London. and. Roundabout now could be looking forward to seeing each other at fashion shows as we have done for the last. How many years? We. Want to exit. Thirty five. Something, like Nineteen eighty-seven age is not. About you were at the Detroit repress. Short News. used. And I was limited. From magazine in Canada in Toronto Canada. And we could never have anticipated what's happened to the world because? We read about things like this in history and And you know industry is being so savagely impacted. By everything that's happened and it's it's great that we're talking today because I subscribe to new magazine. you write for the. Your magazine and you've just done this enormous piece interviewing designers about the here and now their lives and. The future of the industry, and that's exactly what was supposed to be talking about today. So that's put certain. I can say to you. Tell us what you've been doing with. China's for the last. Well it started out. You Know Stella Buckby at runs the cut we were talking in now late April I think about like what do we WANNA do? For All this book Ended up being part of the. The main magazine in the preview section of what's happening in the fall. But anyway, we started talking about that and I said, you know I really just I want to talk to the the leading designers you know the the big creative minds and. Where we sort of going I, mean, it just feels different even now and I think about how we all felt what on March second and March third when we were still in Paris in winding up with. No the Balenciaga show in the retail show the last days and felt so innocent but then it felt quite different by the end of April. With Europe. All shutdown down the US at least New York Shutdown So, anyway, everybody you know it's it's Raff Simmons Marc Jacobs. Nikola just gear Mutya Rico Kuba. There's there's twelve or thirteen, and all and Everybody was home. So I had lots of time to talk to them, and they had lots of time and we talked in some cases, three times over the summer or rejects dinner we had emails that kind of thing. So it was fun. Now was there a consensus? Among people what the future holds I think you have a different view specifically of how people want will probably want address. Some bring that up pretty clearly like mmj at. I think a lot of people are really concerned You know the the. What's going on with the fashion system people have been talking about that at Nauseam for a while. So that came up a lot RAFF had a lot to say about that I think they certainly spent the month of March and April thinking a lot about this Marc Jacobs a lot and he put some of that up on Instagram to. You know coming off at incredible show that he did in February in New York and just thinking and you know he he had to lay off people on his designed team and others had take salary cuts. That the problem across the industry. And so they were talking a lot about that, and then of course, Allesandro from Goodie. Brought his his instagram out a one was mid may saying we're GONNA go to two meetings to to runway shows a year. So I think a lot of the stuff has been brewing. Yeah, and the bottom line is I, mean to me. I think it comes through in the pieces. It's all an individual choice. You know like you know Michael Kors has made his decision. What he's GonNa do I think Gucci's made their decision to Michael Burke for this piece is the CEO of Vitale and you know. They're gonNA. You know he thinks that the traveling runway shows the future. So all that concerned about you know how big the shows I think I think in the long run we'll see a I mean in the short run will see. Pause, as as we as we deal with the pandemic and we don't know what quite the end game is on that. So I think we've seen a lot of experimentation in the last six weeks two months with digital perform digital shows and presentations and. I think going forward. You know you know it's a huge industry i. think that's the thing is bleak as it seems is a huge industry.

"Won't let people enter at hey dot com as like a username because they think the domain is fake too short be like now that's not a real address. Yeah. No, it is though so. We've had to reach out to all these. Website owners could you please allow us in? Yeah lots of stuff like that. So on top of all that you're competing with free right now you're competing with free and existing and giants. So as lead designer of this, I mean, was there epic levels of pressure to make this very because when you completely free, it has to be super compelling right and so like Jonas you're in charge making the things super compelling. Did you have a lot of pressure on the way you went about designing this thing? I don't think we if we didn't frame it that way for ourselves at the beginning that is sort of the reality that we are competing with free products and. Hard thing to. Are the thing. That's. Good for us is that since we are so small, we don't need to even be a tiny percentage of Jiman- all to be pretty successful so like. Our sites were never on being g mail or being Yahoo or being you know getting a billion users on this like we actually actively don't want that. That's not a problem we are interested in dealing with or solving. We don't want to grow our company to the scale it would take to get there. It's just not in our DNA so we did want was. To build a product that we feel strongly about the, we think solve problems and sets people up in a new direction. If we could get a couple hundred thousand people using it instead of maybe a couple million or billion or whatever. That's great that for us, that's like super good strong quality product that we're happy to run. So when you frame that way, it takes a little bit of the pressure off. It's like we can show day one and be as good as Jamile but I think we got pretty far considering. Our size the amount of time we give her to do it like I use it and I don't look at Jamile anymore and that's pretty pretty good. When. DEALING WITH APPLICATION PERFORMANCE? The ask questions like which important is triggering memory increases are slow request to a particular endpoint cascade into the APP why is this important slow for only a handful of users as this performance pattern occurred before what changed since the most recent deploy? Those are just a few questions easily answered by Scout Apm Scout, is application monitoring that can really tracked on impulse one database queries, sources of memory bloat, performance abnormalities, and a ton.

I just had a couple of questions for you this last December weird, my mom, a raspberry colored T shirt from your store, and she liked it. And I really really liked it. So a couple of weeks. I went through online store, and I couldn't find it anymore. And I was just wondering if you're going to get some more of those we hope so wait, we I in fact, I just because I knew your call was coming. I just got in touch with the lead designer and the lead designer says, it is likely that the pinker raspberry tea is coming back as what we're we're constantly tried to update the designs and have a rotating stock. So that you see different things every time you visit the store. Theory is that if every time you visit the store the stock is the same you're gonna stop coming back. So we kinda always featured new things, and we gauge the popularity of items that have sold and bring those back. So the odds are that it it it will be back at some. I can't tell you win. But the odds are we'll be back. I'm really I'm flattered by your interest. And I appreciate your calling about it. Awesome t shirts, the fabric is just I love it. I I know what I was first shown the fabric for the T shirts. This is not a shirt this. This is this is better quality shirt. And it it it it is striking. So I'm really glad you noticed that. And I will try as having some influence over these things to goose this and get that item back in the store. Okay. That would be awesome. Thanks, jennifer. Thanks very much. I really appreciate it. "Okay. So maybe he's just a guy who took over tesla, you don't like the branding of saying, he's the Copan. That's fine. He's also the lead designer behind space x. He's. He's. SpaceX, you say, okay, I okay. I know that company tesla, I know that company pay pal. I know that company. What about solar city? The world's largest solar panel company, so Yvan musk, whether you like him or not. The guy has gone through a lot. He's done a lot. And so his next note of a quotable I don't it to be discounted simply because he's going through a channel right? Or he might have made a poor decision or decision. Maybe we'll come out later. They made a good decision and people just disagree with how he went about doing it. But please read the notable quotable from Elon Musk says, one lesson I learned pay pal is to fire people faster. That sounds awful. But I think if somebody is not working out, it's best to part ways sooner rather than later, it's a mistake to try to hard to make something work that really couldn't work Yvonne musk. Think about that for a second. So Felicia is somebody that I want to hire faster. Let me let me explain. This principle is a principle number four principal before she passes the. Would you hire her again test? Oh, she passes the, would you hire her again test? That's powerful. Somebody out there just experienced knowledge, because what happened is you went out there and hired somebody. Oh yes, you did. Is just in you would not hire them again. Oh, yeah. And so what you've done is you begin to justify keeping them employed because of the deeds they've done the past. So in the past they had a six month window where they were awesome. When you first hired remember that it was new people are people are dicta to new people up new jobs, new girlfriends, new cars, you hire this person and they were so good that first week week two, they were so good that sparkling, super clean resume the first three weeks, four weeks. But then about week five, they started talking back to you being sarcastic to you, not respecting you get a little comfortable showing up kind of late being casual with the way they were disrespecting your organizational chart, but she does past, gee, just pass the, would you hire them again, test. I mean, Felicia, somebody we would hire her again because she is so good. And so what I had you do as we were preparing today, show notes to make a list because you work with everyday. To make a list of what we like most about Felicia in why she is such a good member of the thrive time show. And so now without further ado, Mr. Eric Chup shell read why we think Felicia is such a great member of the team. Well, first of all, I snuck in a trade against why we think Fleetwood Brown is such a great member of the team. For what? Thankfully she is paranoid when it comes to getting her work done correctly and on time true in. So the founder of Intel, Andy grove, he says, success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure only the paranoid survive, and it's great to have a team member as a business coach. Our goal, our sole goal is to make sure clients can get to their goals. We want them to create time and financial freedom. I want. I want to bring this up because the notable quarter you chose powerful. If you know the story of Andy grove, Andy grove, grew up in Hungary. He's so he's a guy who grew up under communism of over a communist. He grew up raised. Imagine what it'd be like to be raised in a communist country. Yeah, people ask him. Well, how did you?.

"Evans says amelia shots and richard came here are the lead designers that round out the extremely talented designed departments leadership team so naturally she saw them guide got us to see neil so coughing less was part to east asia promotions and anina hampshire once but as focus at all neil don't fucking do this finish the goddamn income number five valve is going to start shipping games again this is via pc game three is done that's the one there in his presentation for upcoming doda to theme card game artifact at valves offices in bellevue washington today gave new reiterated that valve is getting back into developing new games beyond its current roster of multiplayer titles after talking about valves focus on steaming and hardware during the past several years which he described as quote investment the future nor set artifact is the first of several games they're going to be coming from us this quoting continues so that sort of good news parray vows this are shipping games again and quote that's games plural artifact isn't the only game valve is working on in a january 2017 reddit ama newell did confirm that re of the health read it that valve was working on a lease one fullyfledged single player game and the following month in a table interview with see gamer nor said that valve is working on three big vr games today statement doesn't make it one hundred percent clear whether valve has projects in developing beyond these previously mentioned games but it is a possibility quote we are going to be talking about that about it today newell said but sort of the big thing the new era we have in our quiver really is our ability to develop hardware and software simultaneously moving on the article into the quote we always bent and this is now in time unintended we've always been a little bit jealous of companies like nintendo newell said when miyamoto is sitting down and thinking about the next version of zelda romario he's thinking what is the controller going to look like what sort of graphics and.

"Also communists want this trials of the budget the games nazi rod that's the trials the motorcycle game remixed with blood dragons style and it doesn't work at all it's really really lame also brave based on the pixar movie game for that yeah apparently berger i it's it's a little random but always go on that now when there is a movie tie in on a console because that used to be ubiquitous and oh yeah every every big that's gonna be followed by brave exploit reckon the than yet brave of the blood dragon and quantum conundrum which is very clever firstperson puzzle game from the lead designer of portal can i think it's at the onset secondary cool ruby heartless argument listeners a listeners listeners remember you can always reaches at email address schemes q at ign dot com just like this nameless listener did he do not provide his name he or she they say hey guys i mean listener since january i was huge fan of destiny i played the beta and continue to play over the course of four years like many other fans of the game owes hyped for the upcoming sequel last september unfortunately destiny to felt very short of the mark and in many ways was disappointing my question view is have you ever anticipated the release of a sequel only to be disappointed after his release soon that will we all do all the time we made vocations out of it but yeah absolutely i ethic that's happened modest every monster hunter game gotten better and better yeah and every pokemon game yeah see so.

"The rival bike zombie genre or whatever like look at what they did with the branding for each 1 z one uh where now so they had h wednesay one which was there's obvious arrival game and then they launched h one is he won king of the kill since then they have changed uh h wednesay one's name to just survive is no longer call each ones he won the entire name of the game is survive just survive of aleve were just survive just sort of asked that a weird uh and they have just shortened king of the kills name to just h wednesay one a weird so like you know they rebranded both thing is that you buy them separately here we heard two to basically say oh we have better name recognition but this thing but people keep accidentally looking adding like zaabi no yeah so they fucking executed this multimonth strategy hurry naming everything to get it all in line with how they wanted to promote stuff i was thinking a lot yesterday as as installing games going through like my library on steam siam's how much i want another left for dead like i don't want just another life for dead i want another for dad that bring something new to the table because we would actually something did drastically newly that trailer for the game from the payback lead designer no i heard a i heard about that called gt effors gm got announced at a the game will give all showed the trailer the aim or is it got ounce before they saw some stream sets off real him oh eleven us okay realize that you that was at will.

"Tedious though with allegro is this game called necker barista it was so cool only wanted to ask you about the name the name is great asset that's what got us to play weird yeah walk by relect necker ovary so that sounds like earth that it yeah it's amazing it's a it's a really nice i guess it's just like an interactive audiovisual novel kinda thing now and it's very unlike other visual novels or interactive things i've seen before uh it's not quite like a game but like you just i mean you click through to have this story and basically i think the story is there's this like cafe and like at night for like a certain amount of time like you can bring back people from the dead and they come in and all the site crazy stuff happens and the way that they do it was super nice 'cause you know when you click through it's not just like text popping up in these bubbles like they're very dynamic like the play with typography a lot and they play with depth allott and like the text kind of like it doesn't always totally animate but it it's like in a very interesting way where like it's playing with kind of the scene as it's going on and they had really good music and everything about like the style i think is very just unlike anything i've seen and we talked to someone who is you know the lead designer and he i think he mentioned that he was inspired by this team was inspired by these enemies that i was not familiar with either of them but uh i still appreciate that and there is definitely that aspect in to remember which ones.

"It's coming to you over voice over and you're seeing the words appear on it like in the world of whatever the new story takes place an example that early some nuts buying a whole lot is like a teenager i think teenager he is swinging and it's you control both legs with each other joysticks a left leg with laugh right leg with right and you are trying to go over the bar rao two three is being told you and that's free it's a it's a tree yet and he's trying to do a 360 around the tree branch yeah you're controlling that i actually found that to be one of my favorites of what i played because it felt like very like really felt like i was controlling it and it was like a very emotionally engaging experience with those very get the but the rioting really comes together in the second half were again i'm not going to spoil anything but it moves away from journal in two things like oh a tree that are a little more abstract or or the opposite like legal papers tuesday in once it gets into that zone it seems like really find its voice and again like as it gets into the heavier stuff having things that are either more subtle or or it you know not as like emotionally forced like a legal paper both of those helped them come at things that i think if they had taken the kind of like creative writing approach would have just felt pam fisted early like yeah over the top so i i mean i i really like it i think it's very interesting chris bell is the lead designer on it there's a there's a this is not a game by just one person i'm just going to use him as an example but i i it's exciting to see his career kind of hit this point because he started at usc iron i'll probably about like eight.
