"So we all know the story of how Kevin Durant's career at the warriors came to an end to the way in Durant Greco's down holding his leg. He goes up and down the other end and durant grabbing right leg breaking news on. Cbs sports aid skew. It has been confirmed by Kevin. Durant himself a ruptured Achilles. Tendon has already undergone surgery. How do you think all of that? Impacted his legacy with Golden State and with the team's fans. I think it made the relationship with the fans a little bit better than it would have been otherwise because not only did he win championships for them. He put his body on the line and he suffered. He suffered trying to win something for them. And so that softens the blow of this acrimonious break up and I don't think he's thank the fans are he didn't win. He laughed and has done some things that might have resulted in a bit of a backlash. But it's hard to have that backlash if a guy ruptured his Achilles tendon. Coming back. Maybe too soon to try to get you your feel-good and try to get you that championship. So in a way in that moment I think it was the conservation of his Faustian bargain where he became beloved by the warriors fans but it cost him dearly looking forward to whenever the NBA does resume. Kevin Durant is of course now in Brooklyn and paired up with Kyrie Irving And those are two guys with very strong personalities who both like to be the top dog on their team knowing as much as you do about Kevin Durant. How do you anticipate that relationship and that team working out? Since so many people think it's going to go horribly a most wondering. Is this a situation? Where because we're so unanimous in predicting disaster? It's actually going to work out. Well I don't know all tend to go the conventional wisdom. It seems quite precarious. It seems precarious to combine those two in that situation with an organization that I'm sure is competent. I'm sure there are people within who do a good job at not exactly. Salt Lake Yovany Pat Riley type people running things and that organization. It's not like you have a track record of established glory were. You can tell somebody that you gotta fall in line For the sake of the Brooklyn Nets it seems like a shell That the two of them are running and they're both vol's hold their own ways and they're prone to Moody nist and you wonder about their surrounding talent. And so I guess I would say it's precarious and the smart money would be on it and dean not so happily and lastly Ethan. What will it take for? Kevin Durant to be satisfied Well I think initially the ultimate validation from everybody in the culture that he's the best player on the planet at least would temporarily do that but other than that. I mean. That's that's beyond my pay grade. That's not something I could figure out As to what happens after that moment ads. Well even thanks so much for coming on the show. It's my pleasure. Thanks ravening you can follow Ethan. Strauss's coverage of the Golden State Warriors at the Athletic Dot Com and. His new book is called the Victory Machine. Here are some other stories. He has been released by the bengals which it's not a surprise. Not a shock at all. Joe Borough is their guy. The bengals avoid seventeen million dollars in cash obligation to Dalton. And he's on the market now. He's available the red rifle has been since he's starting quarterback since he entered the NFL in twenty eleven and bengals owner. Mike Brown issued a statement saying quote. Andy will always hold a special place with the franchise and I know that he hold a special place in my heart. Paul Dana Junior of the athletic writes that the thirty two year old Dalton could land with the Jaguars or possibly become the backup to Tom. Brady in Tampa Bay while Dalton coming. "Recognized by some people as the best player of the nineteen forties and a guy who to some extent revolutionized. The game still isn't in the basketball hall of fame. Why is that well? That's a great question. Why can you not in the hall of fame? You know if he would have stayed around and was a broadcaster or d commentary for the game was a journalist and pursued stories and hung around those circles. Still we might know his name. We might not be making this documentary right now. But he chose to to live the life that he did and support his family and be a faithful husband and loving father in a in a mentor. It's a lot of young people just aren't many people that are able to to speak up and be a voice for him because so many of his peers have passed since then and tell us about the quest to get him inducted into the hall of fame. It seems like there are a number of people who've been working very hard on that front yeah. The University of Wyoming has done incredible job. You know unearthing this story and getting the case. Kenny sailors. Back out there. There was at one point time a huge surge to get him in where they developed a a packet in DVD. To Send to those. That could potentially be a voice for Kenny. And ultimately it fell flat so he didn't get into the hall of fame on his first try but now he's getting some more attention who are some of the celebrities who are now being outspoken about his cause and his candidacy players like steph curry and Kevin Durant whose name is accolades has just as whole legacy should be in the hall of fame. This family deserves that his work. Keep fighting until we get them in there. Dirk Nowitzki and legends like Nancy Lieberman historic has to be told now that I know I'm GonNa take it to the hall of fame. I'm going to share this story with other athletes and people so they know the origin of where this this started. Bob Knight all over said have ever played or coached. The game should have a picture of Kenny sailors. Ass Up somewhere that we can kiss every time we go into the locker room. Clark Kellogg Mark. Price like are now often with Kenny story and they hopefully will be able to help carry on his legacy and share this with other people. Well sadly if it ever does happen. Kenny won't get to see his induction into the hall of fame because he died while you were working on this documentary. So he passed away. January thirtieth two thousand sixteen. It was about two weeks after his ninety fifth birthday and so I know that was something that was really important. It was kind of a a ticking clock for a lot of us. Because we didn't know how long can he was gonNA be around for and we wanted to try our best to make it happen while he was still around while he can enjoy it. And Jacob position film part of a final push to get Kenny. Sailors inducted into the basketball hall of fame. It definitely started out as a form of like. Let's get Kenny in the hall of fame. Let's let's make this be that missing piece As I began to spend more time with him. I myself begin to adapt the same mentality that Kenny ad that you know if if this doesn't happen if we don't get Kenya fame the failure in my part because obviously Kenny story goes beyond basketball if I were to make the hall of Fame Today. Oh boy it'd be nice. I mean I'm a human being just like everybody else but I know I belong to the greatest hall of fame that any man or woman can ever belong to and when you belong to that and you know you belong to it. You don't worry about these hall of fame. The main create down here don't mean that much do you. And so I think overall it would be great if this really was that missing piece if this is something that finally broke down the walls for. Kenny's story for everyone to get to enjoy and to know who he was and be a household name and be recognized by the Naismith Hall of fame but in all honesty. I think Kenny would agree with us. That if this film positively impacts even one person by washing it that would be a victory for him. It'd be a victory for us. We'll check out. Thank you so much for joining us. Hey happy to be here. "We're joined now by Oakland Announcer Jim. Brock Meyer Jim. Thank you so much for joining us. How are you handling life without baseball right now? What does social distancing look like for Jim Brock Meyer? I'm not handling it. Well I've gotten to the point now for example a complete game. That's when you spend all day in the same pair of sweat pants. Change THEM. A ground ball. That's when you curl up into a little ball while weeping on the bathroom floor so I'm making my own baseball fun. This is the ideal environment for baseball. Baseball was in its golden age back when people literally had nothing to do three and a half hours they just flew by because you're alternative activities. Either reading a book or getting polio. Now here we are again. There's no baseball and instead I'm just. I'm stuck at home in this endless. Back and forth between apocalyptic news and well online pornography so not a lot of choices over here. we'll Jim you know you've always been very outspoken as an announcer about the people in charge. How do you think the people in charge if baseball have handled all of this? Well I think that Professional sports organizations have done an amazing job. I really do a lot of people did not realize just how serious Gerona virus was until there was no sports. It's the most that Major League Baseball has done to affect public health since Given the entire roster the eighty six minutes medicine committee and who knows how many potential infections they stop there so this is a big coup for baseball. We've seen other sports announcers you know like Joe Buck. Use this time at home to just call play by play during Everyday Life. But you kind of already do that. Are they? Just kind of stealing your stick and also I know that you have you have some issues with Joe as well. I'm trying to have some sympathy for Joe Buck right now. He's dealing with not having work for the first time like ever in his life. I mean the man would literally announce anything from Children's golf tournaments to competitive dog eating so I understand that he's desperate personally. I'm quite used to being homeless and unemployed. That's my wheelhouse so if Joe needs to borrow some of my tools in order to not have a mental breakdown. I'm I'm GonNa let that happen. I feel like one day Joe. Buck is going to look back at this time in his life and she one set of footprints in the sand because this is carried him and his his weird Marionette lack buddy before all of this corona virus stuff baseball was already dealing with a major scandal with the Astros signed stealing scheme as an announcer. What's your reaction? Been watching that whole thing unfold? Well it's been very disappointing to a baseball person. But not not all that surprising. It was bound to happen scandals after all. Baseball's most hallowed traditions. I mean the black socks and steroid use and the angels pretending that they actually play in Los Angeles. Baseball's America's pastime and lag. America baseball has an UNCANNY ability to keep surviving in pretending. Like it's mistakes just never happened so this will sort itself out now. All I hope is that someone properly sanitizers the baseball before throwing it at the Astros batters. That's all I hope just through clean baseball's there you know Jim. Thor's there's so much uncertainty right now in the world and in sports and we don't know wagner or even if we'll ever get baseball back the season what words of wisdom do you have for fans who are are feeling loss right now without the comforts of baseball folks precious remember. You can get through this. We can all get through this. You have the skills. If you're a baseball game you know how to have hope. Even in times it seemed hopeless. Especially if you're a fan of the Baltimore I mean you know how to survive with limited human context as you would know if you've ever been one of the twelve people attending a Tampa Bay rays game baseball fans. We are more ready for this than anybody. And at some point game we love with and we'll get back to being very very very mad. It useless so we have that to look forward to I look forward to it very much. Jim Brock Meyer. Thank you for joining us. Thank you can be the always a delight. Here are some other stories. We're following at the lead in yet. Another head-scratching move for the Texans. Puzzling off-season Houston traded for wide receiver. Brandin cooks sending a second round pick in this year's draft to the La Rams. The Texans of course are trying to fill the gaping hole left by trading De'andre Hopkins to the cardinals for running back David Johnson and two picks the rams will reportedly take a twenty one point. Eight million dollar cap hit for cooks while Houston will pay him. Eight million dollars guaranteed this season. The Athletic Shield Kapadia grades. Move a D for the Texans. The only reason it's not an F. He writes is because they already set that floor with the Hopkins deal. The fifty seven th pick was frankly a lot to give up in a draft class. That's deep it. Wide Receiver and cooks comes with a lot of question marks last season he suffered two major concussions in two thousand five days and has had five known concussions in his six years in the NFL. Texans are hoping he can return to his twenty eighteen form after saying earlier this week that. Ufc Two forty nine would go on as scheduled on April Eighteenth Dana White said in an interview with ESPN on Thursday that the event and all subsequent UFC fights have been postponed today. We got a call from the highest level you can go at Disney and the highest level of ESPN and the powers that be. They're asked me to stand down and not do this. Event next Saturday before the change of plans Thursday White was planning to hold. Ufc Two forty nine at the Touchy Palace. Casino resort near Fresno and he said on Thursday quote when the world gets back to normal the California event will be Tachi Palace and finally federal prosecutors brought a new round of indictments this week as part of an ongoing investigation of soccer's world governing body. Fiba in the indictment the government formally accused FIFA officials for the first time of accepting bribes in exchange for their votes on hosting rights for the two thousand eighteen and twenty twenty two world cups which were awarded to Russia and cutter. A total of sixteen people were indicted on a wide range of charges including fraud. "Yeah one hundred percent. Make no mistake about the timing here around five o'clock. Pm Pacific Time on Wednesday. I'm parking my car in the parking garage near the Golden One Center where the Kings play. I'm on the phone with illegal official talking about what's going on and I'm getting. It confirmed in that conversation that the plan going into Thursday was going to be games with no fans that Adam silver was gonNA greenlighted that they had had a conference call with owners where the overwhelming majority wanted games with. No fans televise. Keep that revenue stream going in that same conversation. I went out of my way to ask whether or not the league new if it had anybody who had been infected staff member and player I remember explicitly making a point to not just say player or coach essentially said anybody within the NBA family. It was a matter of minutes until the news came out. You're talking about an hour. Roughly and now everything changes and you also see the machinations in terms of PR and how it works in in a crisis so the press release comes out and pretty short order. Saying season's been suspended. I mean that that's a clear tail to me that the NBA was obviously well aware that this possibility was there and they had already written up their press. Release JUST IN CASE. Somebody was infected. This was always what was going to happen. Bring the campaign trail alive from every corner of the country. Search for into America wherever you're listening now to subscribe new episodes premiere every Thursday. So let's talk about the financial side of this suspension of games. How big of a hit is this for? Nba Owners. It's massive you know and everything's relative because they're filthy rich and and obviously this is a big time business about eight billion dollars. A year in Revenue Golden State Warriors Team President Rick Welts was quoted saying that this was going to be tens of millions of dollars now. That estimate was before the season was suspended. That was when we were talking about simply not being able to have fans in your building so the number now is staggering. I don't know what it's going look like but it's going to have a massive ripple effect on the salary cap for next season sponsorships marketing all the above that all hinges on games all hinges on action. They've never seen something like this. You know there have been times before where. Nba Games have not been played Like for example the two thousand ten twenty eleven lockout. How would you compare what happened then? With what's happening now in terms of the financial impacts on players and owners. It's a obviously a different time on the calendar and that's why I think this is going to cost them a whole lot more money because when you start factoring in playoff games you know one of the not so talked about secrets of NBA Business. Is that get into the playoffs? I mean that is the bread and butter. That is how you take your season financially from a good place to a great place or a bad place to place whatever it might be and there. Are you know the sticker price on every individual playoff game is just massive? You know this is partly why we have conspiracy theories that loom whenever a series might be you know three two and you think one team's GonNa put it into it and they don't and you hear the fans chime in with you know all it's rigged and and here's why because ex team just made an extra ten million dollars between the gate you know and the TV side with their local TV package and the airing of that game or the national TV package. So I think the timing of it is what is going to hurt the ironic part of the NBA. Lockout in two thousand. Ten eleven is dead for years and years and years and to this day a lot of us have debated the possible merits of not even starting the season until Christmas Day and so while they lost a lot money from October to Christmas. Back in two thousand and you also kind of saw through that experience that the mainstream interest wasn't really there anyway so you know they did pay a price but in the end they had a successful season they were able to crowned champion and have a authenticity to this entire thing. That now is in grave jeopardy because it let's say they even try to pull off some sort of playoffs at this point. What sort of condition are the players in? What sort of training have they been doing? I you know and I'm a little pessimistic coming out of yesterday's events but I just I don't think we're going to see any sort of play offs and so how will this work for the players financially. Will players get paid during this time? We're not playing games. No no no pay no play to quote or no Plano pay rather to quote. Cj mccollum of the Portland Trailblazers. He tweeted at the other day. That is a reality you know. This is akin to that lockout financially for the players that if the Games don't happen they don't get paid you know so. That's the part where no one's going to play their violins for the players. And I certainly understand that but I do think sometimes we forget that you've got this middle class of NBA players even the lower class so to speak. That doesn't make the KINDA money. We're not talking. Russell Westbrook Steph curry money here. You know if you are a young guy who hasn't had much time to save and now you're looking at a pretty sizeable chunk out of what you expected to come. It's not a matter of you know. Are you going to have a hard time making ends meet? But it is a matter of if you weren't smart with your money if you didn't organize if you didn't save and put it in some smart places then you might find yourself feeling like a regular joe again financially because it was happening here you know what about all these young players that were vying for minutes and vying for spots and trying to get their foothold in the NBA. I mean you absolutely could have the Ark of different young players careers changed by what happens here because by the time next season rolls around if we assume that everything gets cleared up and the world moves on past the corona virus. Then what kind of shape you know is that player's career in the kind of stuff that if you're a player that's where your head is at as you're trying to just make it through this incredibly unique situation to get out on the other side overall. Sam In terms of financials who are the biggest losers here in terms of sheer number? It's certainly going to be the owners you know. They make their bread at the turnstile. And you know as much as TV contracts are still a major part are not still but are as big a part of the equation as ever. The Gate still matters quite a bit and the combination of losing gate and losing TV An losing those ratings you know an losing all the momentum of a league that has grown and grown and grown for quite some time. Now I to me. It's the owners you know you've got individual stories where players are going to be in a different spot but you know these owners. We sometimes forget that the benefit for them for the most part is based in things like valuation and what they might be able to net on the back end of a franchise sale if and when they decided to sell the actual overhead. You know in accordance with the revenue is sometimes. Those books are tougher to balance. No matter how rich these guys are and because of that. It's just never been harder to balance the books than it is right now and so I think I'd have to say the owners on that one. Well Sam thanks so much joining us today. You got it. "What is your lasting impression of this museum and the legacy of the Negro Leagues? It's what it does to children honestly And I'm saying that because of what observed at the tour you know. One of the interesting things about children is that they don't know the racism the prejudice the segregation thankfully. They can't even fathom America. That was divided by color segregation. Summarized through the eyes of a child is done so very simply that was dumb and the right it was dumb but it was also the way that this country was and it's very important that we allow our children to look back in time. If they are to appreciate how far we've come when Bob Kendrick gives a tour you know. He's not shy about saying. Hey there were white baseball players. Who Spit on Jackie Robinson? When he was slide into second base and that sort of just a a small detail of what he faced throughout the course of his rookie season. So they're blown away when they come in and learn you go jail sitting in wrong. Section of Ballpark are drinking from the wrong water. Found using the wrong restroom. Lot of people as you well know lost their lives for breaking those simple societal standards. But the other thing that you have to admire is they never allow this to kill the love of the game of baseball. So if I've got to sleep on the bus and eat my peanut butter and crackers. I'M GONNA keep playing ball and really that's the prevailing spirit that you feel here at the Negro Leagues Museum and so you see these kids have fun when they get on that field after learning all that history they WANNA play baseball. You will see them mimicking. Hey here's how I'm going to swing the bat and I'm going to run the first base and I'm GonNa get this head off such paid a and again. We hope that we can be part of that equation. That gets kids excited about playing our sport and but it's important that they be able to come here and see themselves when they walk through this museum. They say people look just like them so to see how it transforms children in a way that you can see them see themselves in these nearly ballplayers when these men weren't able to get the same opportunities that we now have as Americans and while America was trying to prevent them from sharing and the joys of her so-called National Palestine it was the American spirit that allowed them to persevere and prevail and I think that's what makes this story so triumphant and so compelling and so are inspired while nate. Thank you so much for joining us for giving us your perspective and for being our eyes and ears into the Negro Leagues Museum. Yes thank you so much for having me and I hope. "So After football slater goes on to be a pioneer in another industry law in in the pre civil rights era nineteen twenty five breath. He enrolled in the University of Iowa Law School and he was still playing for the Rock island independence and he arranged a schedule to where he could attend law classes classes in the morning and then drive to Rock Island Illinois in the afternoon and attend practices then in nineteen twenty nine fine After you graduated from the University of Iowa law school he had to take the Illinois bar and now as during a middle of game week and they're playing in Minneapolis so so he had to delay his trip in order to take the Illinois bar and pass it and that launched his second career after he retired in nineteen thirty one which was says a as an attorney in the Chicago land area and he ends up becoming I think only the second black judge in Chicago and he becomes the first black judge judge elected to the Cook County Superior Court in one thousand nine hundred sixty? Yes it's It's pretty remarkable. Because when he was elevated to the superior are your court and elected he was given a standing ovation and they had a ceremony forum that include Mayor Richard Daley. What he appreciated? The most he said was the thing that pleased as me. The most about this is nothing was said about my race and considering his whole life he had fought against extreme prejudice in football and in law. That really is a proud moment but for him. While and Duke Slater did live to see some of his football accomplishments honored in one thousand nine fifty one. He's elected in the inaugural college football all hall of fame class and he could have been elected to the pro football hall of fame all the way back in one thousand nine hundred eighty three. But he wasn't. Why do you think college? Football honored him at the time but pro football did it just about every major publication had him listed as the greatest greatest tackle or among the greatest tackles in college football history and and the nineteen fifty one college football hall of fame inaugural class. There were just just too many voices saying out grady was so he was the only African American elected in that class and it was a special honor for him when the big ten came out a few years later with its greatest team he was listed on it now in nineteen sixty three the pro football hall all of fame opens and can't know Hieaux and they have a charter class. In the early nineteen seventies twice slater was up for nomination for the pro football hall of fame but was not elected and there were so many deserving players then as in now who have not been elected and then he just simply simply slipped through the cracks then when his name continue to surface just in casual conversation. A lot of times veterans or senior committee members. Ah tend to go to the the people who are living rather than those who are deceased from past era. How how much oversight is it? That Duke Slater. It had not been elected into the pro football hall of fame until now he was the probably the greatest oversight simply because of what he was able to represent multiple avenues. WHO's one because he was such a good player? I mean nine. Different types of all pro recognition in the nineteen twenties should have made him easily a candidate a day. Just simply for his onfield prowess however what he represented as a pioneer for his race and how he was able to overcome that kind of prejudice. When a lot of deserving players were not allowed to play in that era? I think really they should have paid special attention to but still even with that a snub until now while pro. Football has been overlooking Duke Slater I has continued to honor his legacy. Yeah began in the nineteen sixties rate. After he had passed there started to become a surged. The of people who wanted him to have something named for him and and in one thousand nine hundred seventy the football program began the Duke Slater Award which goes to the best athlete from the Chicago. Land era in nineteen seventy as well. The the big ten conference named slater as a tackle to its all time team then in one thousand nine hundred. Seventy two Iowa stadium was There is under discussion to rename. Its it's and two names. Continuously stood out. And I'll kinik. They're only heisman trophy winner. who perished in World War? Two and Duke Slater and President Sandy Boyd Said both of these individuals contributed greatly to the university not simply as football players but as human beings who exemplified throughout their lives. What a university should be and they Decided on naming the football stadium. Four Nile Kinik. But then the new dormitory which had four hundred ninety nine beds Name it slater hall which ages one of the largest and most prominent dormitories at the University of Iowa and it was dedicated that fall a member of the black student. Union William Jordan spoke Boca dedication saying blacks weren't allowed to to live in the dorms and when the team went away to play slater had to sleep in separate quarters eat separately and was generally segregated segregated from the rest of the group and the Black Student Union of Iowa praised the renaming of it so dukes later died in nineteen sixty six of stomach cancer and now nearly one hundred years after he stopped playing. He's elected to the hall of fame. What's the reaction the reaction at Iowa's the they're overwhelmed overwhelmed? They're so excited for this. This is something that they've wanted for a long time in the foyer. The lobby of the pretty brand new football ball facility there they have three items one of which is his shoes bronzed and so every day players African American players white eight players walked by that on their way to the all American room and they could see duke slater shoes at the pro football hall of fame. They already had his shoulder pads now. They're going into his bronze bust this summer. And what does canton and the recognition that comes with that mean for Duke Slater's legacy and and for the legacy of of other black players pioneers. You're looking at somebody who was overlooked. In a lot of cases he wasn't a member of the one thousand nine hundred twenty s all all decade team and and you wonder if that had some sort of prejudicial residue because of bad and so over the years he was overlooked as a player but also as a man and I think this rights are wrong but in some ways baby. It's it's good that he was overlooked for so long so now we can share the story about Duke's later if he was elected in nineteen seventy infre- we're not talking about do slater anymore but we are right now so I think this is. This is an important step for him. And for all African Americans who had endured such prejudice to be able to have their legacy celebrated to have other people look up other players and see what they were able to accomplish in that era and perhaps us uncover some other hidden gems in the national football. Scott thank you so much for joining me and for making sure Duke Slater story continues to be told. Thank you so much really appreciate all your time. Today you can read Scott Doctrines profile on Duke slater and his coverage of the IRA football at the athletic dot com. Here are some other stories. Meanwhile the Knicks weren't just busy making trades. They also hired player agent. Leon rose as president of basketball asking ball operations. He'll take over for Steve Mills who was fired earlier this week and finally because New York sports fans apparently haven't suffered enough. The the sale of the mets has fallen through mets owners. "Hello and John. Seeing the way that Joe Bureau has been playing this season I imagine a lot of Buckeye fans are probably wondering how they ever lost this guy. Why didn't he ever see the field at Ohio state? He went quarterback room with a lot of NFL players. You know a lot of guys around. NFL Rosters now that we're in that quarterback room so you know the first year he red shirts the second second year you know. He's still behind the guy us going to redshirt junior year. He thought he was gonNA. He's GonNa finally get a chance to start. They heard his hand in the off season. And then it was kind of of like okay. He told the coaches. If you can't guarantee me I'm GonNa Start over Dwayne Haskins. I'm going to leave. Ohio state quarterback Joe Borough is is going to transfer from the program. He announced that today on twitter. Now he is the unusual graduate transfer. When you go to school like Ohio state you know you just you never know? Because because they're always going to be recruiting five star athletes. It's not just a survival of the fittest. It's just about timing. This is one of the most amazing things about Joe. Borough I mean he spent three years essentially as a practice player not playing competitive game so while other. QB's are developing. He's kind of just hovering in the background and he decided that he will play his last two seasons in Baton Rouge Louisiana the home of the L. S. U. Tigers started last year in his stats. Bats were pretty pedestrian because they hadn't fully opened the offense up yet you know. I think he threw sixteen touchdown passes but he was the fiesta bowl. MVP like he definitely showed would last year. He was good. But not like this jar chase wide open touchdown off this. Is it even fair Shaw. What what's happening this game? So far Joe Borough just his this laughable again. He's that's what makes it such an amazing story. I think because in some ways it's almost like he was frozen in time from that senior senior year where he lit up Ohio. Set All these records young. Everyone remembers that season and how he played and then all of a sudden and now that people really paying attention to him again on a national level. He's doing the exact same thing at the highest level of college football if he has produced so you know in a lot of ways you know for him at probably it seems like forever ago but retracing his steps. It seems like yesterday. What's the feeling in his hometown about out his current success? Our people surprised by what he's doing. People are not surprise because they saw him as it is best to them. It's like oh we're seeing him for finally seeing him play again and it's just like we remembered it five years ago so for them. They're like well. No we expected this is awesome. He's been great. The way it happened is the big surprise that he didn't do it. Ohio state he transferred to Lsu of all places you know they've never have Ohio players on the roster. They've never had a passing game. Aim like this ever. So yeah the way it happened is I think it makes it even sweeter for everyone. Because it's not just like he's the regional hero. He is a national national hero and he's beloved by people that have never stepped foot in Ohio. Yeah I mean He. Is this midwest kid that went to a school in the south where he really didn't know anybody and yet he immediately stepped into a leadership role there. How did he do that? Yes one of his friends got him Zach Saltzman and he plays at Georgetown and he was down in Lsu. He spent some time there with him this summer. Time program like that you gotTa Establish Yourself. How do you do the right? You WanNa have you ever spent over the summer and then people feel like Oh your top and then you can kind of like getting the personality you know. He was a quarterback and he was beaten other and this is what he did it. Ohio state as well. Winning sprints winning tough man competitions and he did that stuff fidel issue and that just gave him instant credibility and meanwhile in Athens Ohio. It sounds like there's a real Joe Borough fever adults are having parties to watch. LSU football everyone's watching on the college bars you know. Not Not every kid. Cleveland Columbus cares about Joe Borough but a lot. What do and his friends? He is good friends that play for the college football team at said we'll see some use students wearing barrow shirts. And then like like students like referring quattro take pride in knowing that like oh he has ties stuff which is cool to see even the local Walmart has gotten in on it right. Local Walmart has LSU stuff and one of our editors the athletic son goes to Ohio and he said he went to the Walmart. Pick up supplies when he dropped him off and he sought. He actually has a picture of the yellow shirts that were in stock There's some so smart purchasing Going on there one. Local bars has a big heisman. Banner operate now The one where a lot of the locals go and a lot of the coaches go so people are definitely. I have a feeling when he he's in the national championship playing Ohio State there. It's going to be a pretty rowdy night at the bars and so now it looks. There's a possibility that he'll end up pretty close to home next year. As one of his coaches said he's like I don't go to church every Sunday. But you know I'm really starting to believe there's some divine intervention Ventian here Cincinnati bengals the number one. Pick right now the worst record and the NFL's we're talking. "And so Mike when we think of professional boxing you know most people don't typically think of Saudi Arabia. How did the fight end up there? There was a big bidding we'll bidding match for this fight. It was. It was between Principality Stadium in Cardiff Wales. which is a Dome Stadium? The around ninety thousand and before that there was talk of poisoning the Madison Square Garden. But at the last moment. Eddie hearn promoter. Josh was promoter received eight another twitter. The this was from Prince Khalid in Saudi Arabia. Saying that he he really wants to bring the fight here and Eddie admitted that is actually rooted. I kind of dismissed it. There's been so much talk over the years of a FICO means you buy or other places in the Middle East and it's always has been out there to kind of dangling and Mike tells a little bit about this Unusual stadium that they've built. It's actually on the site of UNESCO heritage location. which is I think there's a little will be more than eight hundred in the world? They built this in around six weeks. It's crazy it's fifteen thousand seats. I was there today and it's beautiful. It looks like there was a great sight. Sight lines all over the place giant video screens on all four sides should be a great setup for the fight and the crazy thing is part of being UNESCO heritage site you. I can only use it for six months. So they're going to have to tear down afterward and has the build up. Felt different in any way compared to other heavyweight bouts that you've been around it lines up with a a lot of other big fights in boxing war. Of course there was the rumble in the jungle between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali was Zaire Africa. You had the Thrill Manila One of the greatest fights of not the greatest of all time that was Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and of course Eddie Arabia's paying a ton of money to bring this fight here I've heard anywhere from forty nine to sixty million. So wow this means a lot mike. What do you think is at stake for each of these guys? Let's start with Andy Ruiz. What's at stake for him? Everything if if he loses you know people are GonNa say he was just it was a one hit wonder he was a fluke and he said that he really was really motivating him as he wants to shut up all the doubters I because he knows everyone's still doubting him but if he wins everyone's going to be become has become believer and I think he has a chance to be a real legitimate star. Two possibilities are analyst analyst him if he wins this fight and he gets cement himself as one of the biggest stars in the sport. And what about Anthony Joshua I mean again. This is a guy who was heralded by some as like the next Lennox Lewis in the next great heavyweight. He really needs to win. Because if you lose his people are going to just say that he was good as we thought he was. And where did you go from there. It's hard hard to go from selling out stadiums and making four million fifty million even sixty million with some people think he's making for this fight to me. He's still make a lot of money. He still be a big name but it wouldn't be the same again all right. Then Mike. What's your prediction? WHO's GonNa come out on top? I usually feel like I have a good grasp on. WHO's GonNa win even on imprompt plenty of times? Of course. This one's such a coin flip fight so many variables were fighting outdoors in the Middle East. But I'M GONNA go at Andy Res I just I think I don't think it was a fluke. I think he's GonNa prove that he is the real deal. Medi Has Anthony. Joshua was number and that an old axiom but styles make fights and I think his presser style l.. And it's ultra quick. Hands are the Elixir for Anthony. Joshua's power will mike. Thanks so much for joining us and keep enjoying that breakfast. Fred thank you so much. "These two guys Joel and Hakim. They've actually never matt which I still find. Pretty surprising. Joel is clearly a big fan of hi Kim. What did he tell you about Joel? Well he said the thing that impresses the most is that he had all of his moves down the joke. Kobe the moves when you come Brady Dell technical footwork the difference from what you you don't join US embiid. He's doing those moves by what you it was much. He had the drop step he had a spin he had the Shimmy he had all these things that Akeem has spent years mastering that he's charged guys six figures to learn of course several days you know down in. Houston you know Kobe. We Brian Lebron. James has been down there Dwight Howard has been there to work with Akeem Olajuwon to learn these post moves. That made him so so dominant. You know Kobe. Bryant's it's probably the one guy that was able to turn those lessons into you. Know some effective play on a court but he's watching the Guy Joel embiid who he feels has the footwork put. Work has the the has the moves to really be great but he also knows that he has the size to truly be dominant. So you know. There are some similarities as between Hakeem and Joel's games But also some differences. How would you compare the two of them? In terms of layer style of play. Joel has has the ability to step out in Keighley. Shoot at three. But he doesn't have the the real finesse than Akeem had working to what mckean basically said try to take ownership of everything on the floor. He didn't want anybody to try to get get take up his space in any way and I think Joel Sorta has that mentality. Well he just went about it differently. His game is much more power it and then also you can also get into the personality. They sort of had take a different approach. Where Joel is more of a show can be better than anybody? Then soda more of a guy who likes to ham it up and have a good time out there on the court while the Chemo which is basically about just methodically destroying everybody on the court whenever we got the chance and Michael it sounds like Joel sees himself as part of a tradition of African basketball ballplayers. What does he want his own legacy to be? We told me that his goal is to be to have someone say that. An African is the best player in the World Sports I. I don't think it's ever happened. So he'll the amazing domain four key to thinking back home meal back in Africa. Drug thinking we have Joel Immune Basketball player as the best player in the world. And you know he's a big soccer fan and so he was naming some of his favorite African soccer players and saying you know they were great but you know they weren't. They weren't the best you know. He said even when you think about a team as great as he was you know people probably viewed Michael Jordan is the greatest during that era so for him. He's like okay. I seen what I've seen with my predecessors have done on of seeing what the guys have laid the foundation for me have done what can I do to take it to the next level. How can I elevate this? And his his objective is goal is to try to You know be seen as the best player in a game. He knows that can only happen if he wins championships. I think Last year in the playoffs Philadelphia loss in the second round on a really gut wrenching shot by Kawhi Leonard Students. The Joel wept. He cried a sloppily because it really hit him that he came that close. Maybe one of the championship and I think it means a lot to him and he wanted really really bad because he's extremely ambitious. Broke with doesn't win so I gotta how to win. He really wants to be great and he wants to make it. So the Africans look up to him and maybe the same way that they admire fire. A respect Akeem meanwhile Hakeem. It sounds like doesn't really want to be credited as a pioneer. Even though he obviously was he he doesn't I don't want to necessarily be praised for paving the way for for guys like Joel Embiid. Who came after him? Why not what did he say to you about all that? Yeah he said it's not like I came here CEO. Let me open the door for everybody. Like he didn't know he was going to be a pioneer. He just knew he liked basketball and that there was an opportunity there for him to play. This was was there was there was a billable me right and I was competing. I see oh did you the compliment. You're watching you when you're this age you know what I'll dam. And while he was playing he just wanted to be the best that he could possibly be at it and everything else so sort of just follow you know. I think that's sort of the difference between you know him and Joel like Akeem Him. He didn't know what basketball is GONNA do for him. Didn't know what's GonNa do for his life for Joel. He's already seen like Oh basketball can take you there. Basketball can lead to this level. Celebrity basketball can lead is kind of lifestyle Al Financially basketball could help make my family wealthy for generations. You know these are type things. That Joel could conceive of that Hakeem. Couldn't when he started playing all right. Michael I just have one last question for you. These guys as we've established have never met. So are you going to set up a meeting or what. Yeah I I might need to I think I think it needs to happen. You know I think you know. It'd be cool. If they sat down together you know. I think it'd be probably it will mean a world to Joel because I mean they've had conversations. They've talked to each other. They spoke to each other up before the draft you know about you know coming into the NBA. And and Joel who's never lost for words. said he didn't really know what to say to them. I kind of just sit on the phone just nodding and you know agreeing. Whatever he had to say so it would be good to set them up? If somehow I can do it. Or maybe this podcast will be what you know leases guys together to meet each other Think that'd be Kinda Great Takim Joel. I know you're both out there listening so Get in touch with my man Michael and let's make it happen. Yeah I could set your love I can get together Michael. Thanks so much for joining us today. This yeah thanks for having me I appreciate it. You can find a link to Michalis Elise story about Joel and Hakeem in our show notes or at the Athletic Dot Com. All right under. So we're headed into Thanksgiving weekend and there's is a lot going on in the sports world on Thanksgiving Day. I'm super excited to see if the bills can keep this hot streak going and to see if Jason Garrett it can save his job in Dallas the game of the weekend. The game of the season actually is ravens. niners on Sunday I mean. Can Anyone Stop Okla.. Mark Jackson good question and of course the rematch between the steelers and Browns is on Sunday and that should be. I don't know if fun is exactly the word but eventful and of course it's rivalry week and college football and I and you know everyone in the country and looking to Michigan Ohio state. Wolverines have rebounded a bit since that devastating lost Wisconsin but they're up against arguably the best team in the country in Ohio state and they've only beaten the buckeyes once in the past fifteen fifteen years and they've lost game seven times straight so go blue and finally. Don't forget to check out the athletics. Massive decade in review project jacked. "Were very much in the global age of sports and there are lots of European clubs that are always looking to expand into new markets with that type of thing on Chelsea's mind when they signed Christian Pulisic that this is an opportunity to get more of a foothold in the American market absolutely An and that might sound a little bit cynical but football is a is a business big business as well as just competitive sport and Chelsea have always been very mindful of their global profile and in particular their a profile in in the American market. They've had a few sort of postseason friendly's there as well including the game in Boston last summer all a soccer game in Foxboro foxborough has a unique goal fighting hatred. The New England Revolution play the Chelsea Football Club from London and a very very keen to kind of this American Fan fan base and there is clearly no more effective way to do that than than to have the face of American soccer's generational talent in your team and an particularly a key part of your team. You know you could say it adds pressure to him maybe but it also helps him in a way in a strange way because Chelsea a more invested vested in his success having paid so much for him he so integral to that plans both in terms of building the team on the pitch but in terms of what they want to do off the pitch commercially and you know after a bit of a rocky start to the season politic has been really red hot lately I mean. He scored five goals in his last three primarily games and he's not one of them just to players in the League who has scored five goals and five assists. Yeah well I think the the big turning point for for pay. The sick in the premier league lease was his Hattrick performance against Burnley more. Just ask for that game. Rejoice America to listen on the scorched earth more is regarded as one of the tougher away grounds in in the country and teams that go there even top teams teams. Don't generally find it very easy but was absolutely sensational. School three goes he actually scored a perfect hat trick with his left foot. Woman is right foot one of these head talk trick put you believe it was a big statement performance from to seek but announced his arrival in the Premier League and now I think his position is stronger because he's he's had to publicly earn it unease publicly owned lamport trust then everything that Lamport has said about out him in the last few weeks since he broke into the team has been overwhelmingly positive I'm really pleased from is topic because of the price hike needs just twenty one and two seem like he did today and you could see balance you can see China's a big part of us want an and let me know the Premier League can be An incredibly difficult place to play. There's just so much attention from fans and from the media how is Christian been received by Chelsea fans in the British press so so far people were a little skeptical of sick in the first couple of weeks clearly an American player arriving with such a big price tag. They were always going to be questions from the stall and I think there were doubts about whether he was maybe a little bit too physically slight to to play in the Premier League to match the physical intensity take the league and also whether he was just good enough so there was skepticism. Leon about politics and some of it was justified. Some of it was was circumstantial and a bit unfair led to him and he's responded in the right way and and and you can say just from the last month and a half that he's made himself pretty important to this Chelsea team and I. I can't see that changing while he's at this level and it seems like since Pulisic started scoring in these last few games. There's really been an explosion of excitement On this side of the Atlantic and you know I think American fans have just been hungry for their first true superstar and to see an American employer with one of Europe's biggest clubs scoring and being the star. It's it just feels like a very exciting time right now for American soccer ray should be it it really should. There should certainly be massively exciting for for any American soccer fans and it's also I think exciting more generally because anytime any time you say a twenty one year old the has already achieved what he's achieved and he's already captain of his country in an already made a big impact to major European in clubs that you have to wonder what does the next ten years whole been store and Liam do you think that he has changed or do you think he will change skeptical. Toco Brits Perception of American soccer players I think he has the potential to completely transform what we think of when we think of an American can prospect there is always being an artificial ceiling when when people mention Americans that couldn't complain Europe will play in England as we as we talked about that got ceiling has tended to be around the middle bracket of the League whereas I think six showing the with certain Paul with a certain development and his talent the American American players can really play at the very top level that make a big difference in and can be match witness the Liam. Thank you so much for joining us today and good luck at your dreary rainy match tonight. "Them well? Well enough isolated from their environment that they'll actually stay in these superposition states. The problem is so hard that there were some distinguished wish physicists in the one thousand nine hundred nineties who said this is fundamentally impossible you will just never do. This cubits are too fragile to control now. The the key discovery that changed most people's minds in the nineties was Quantum Eric Correction so a theorists showed road that if you could just make The rate of error sufficiently small. The meaning you know if you could just isolate your cubits from their environment not perfectly but just really really really well okay then you could take the cubits that you care about you know that I'm doing your Your computation and cleverly encode them across the states of hundreds or thousands of physical cubits in such away that even if any let's say one percent of your physical cubits were to leak into the environment you could still recover the information Asian. You care about from the other ninety nine percent okay. And so you'd be continually monitoring the machine to see where errors have occurred and and how to fix them so quantum error correction was really the discovery that convinced people that yes ultimately quantum computers can scale you know beyond a few hundred cubits. It's a maybe a ridiculously hard Engineering problem but it raise. It doesn't seem to raise any new issues of fundamental physics in principle double. This can be done Google IBM and all the other players are now in a race to Demonstrate that they can actually the usefully eric correct their cubits and that's really the big milestone to watch out for well Scott are and some thank you so much for helping us understand this incredibly complicated technology.
