"Now we're joined on the podcast. rebecca black. She's the ceo and founder of jamba company. That looks to help. Foster kids feel more comfortable. One set of pajamas at a time. Now rebecca. tell me why. You're doing pajamas for foster kids would. What's the significance. I just kind of started digging. I started talking to foster families. I talked to your child protective services at talked a lot of case managers social workers like what is something that we could do to bring comfort to the kids that they serve on the front lines and time and time again. The answer was these kids really need pajamas. And i love pajamas. Like when i was a kid my parents would always give us. Jim is at christmas. Like a who. Doesn't love brand new pajamas. And so i said you know. Let's let's try it and I approached my small group at church and as for christmas. We always give each other again. Why don't we give back to the foster community. Would anybody be interested in doing that. And they all agreed and before long. It kind of just bled like it was like this group wanted to do it and the next group to do it and in that i kind of drive that we hosted We collect a two hundred twenty three pairs of pajamas. And i was like this is going to work and people see the need When it's kind of explain to them and they jump into action very quickly and so pajamas an easy way to make a big impact. And that's what we want to offer. People is one the opportunity to learn about the journey of these kids To hear about the journey in everyday life of social workers and case managers and understand foster family pressures and then three take action. How can you be a part of what we're doing and people just jump in like our community is so generous. It's beautiful rebecca. Black is the founder and ceo of jambos rebecca. What's the most important thing that you've learned about kids in the foster system as you've been working with jambos. I think that's something that we're really passionate about bringing awareness to is that The kids that are going into the foster care system. Oftentimes that transition is very abrupt. So children are leaving an unsafe living environment And they are being placed into a foster home and that that time between point a. m. point be is very uncertain Oftentimes it's It's abrupt We i would imagine it to be very anxious Child is going from something that may be seemingly normal to them and abruptly moved into a strangers home for lack of better words and they're taking very few of their own belongings with them. So it's if you can kind of imagine like your child is just being sweeped from school or maybe. They're being entertained from their home. But it's like grab what you can and let's get out the door and so often times. Kids are arriving to their foster families with get one. We have one story of a family who received a child on their doorstep and ali brought was a bicycle. And you know great. We're glad he goes to bring his bike. But what about some practical resources to help get that child through the night And so it's our heart to just really bring comfort to that journey that little window there where kids are kind of looking around thinking. Where am i going. I don't have any of my stuff. and so on. So it's are it's just it's why we exist is to is to bring comfort to that to that blow right there to that specific moment where they walk into a stranger's house in everything's new. Everything's different but they could have a set pajamas with their favorite character on them right. And it's it's really neat because We've had stories of you know young kids. Arriving into their foster homes and a girl my board her child arrived with a onesie. And that's all there was no diaper. There was no bottle. There was no pajamas. there was there. Were no resources like in that moment. Now i think that you know the heart of of this whole mission. That foster parents are set up for success. But we're talking about that moment. You know the foster families do get the chance to go and do a little shopping and get settled. But the in those moments of absolute like kind of chaos. It's like well. Let's give case manager social workers. Let's give them product to help along the way. That transitional moment it's really really imperative. Rebecca black is the founder and ceo of jambos. If you would like more information you can find it online at jambos donates dot com rebecca. Thank you so much for joining us. On the podcast. Yeah thank you so much for having us. we've just. "Actually purchasing the building that your store is an and downtown Lawrenceville and downtown Lawrenceville in being in the midst of a boon now and so that was a really great business decision let's talk about that process and the importance of location yeah of course location for the comic industry in the nineties people would seek me out so I would have been a off the beaten path type of location but as time went by of course well from the very first day that I signed my first lease and and sent out that first rent check my dream was to own my own building and dedicated their time towards that about five years ago really searching for the right location downtown Lawrenceville course gone through a number of changes over the years but after doing some research search and so forth I found just the right spot and when you retire from the comic industry you can retire in a number of different ways but at this stage perhaps glad to quest we multi generational I'll be able to hand down my my kids or something but the downtown area of course has been just booming and so working with the city of Lawrence bell has been wonderful R. it's it's really should change their diet the dynamic of the business and so it's been wonderful and a great investment so would you recommend to independent and independent retailer to try to purchase your own property is that something that you would suggest yeah any opportunity that you have because of course owning keeps your expense down and I've been very aggressive about staying out of debt and keep my expenses down and it's served me very well actually during the hard times it's it's been the two stores also having two different locations has really helped because when one's down a little bit the others up and.

"Lawrenceville and it's in New Jersey you know it's seventy thousand dollars a year for boarding school high school kids now I mean very competitive get into feed the ivy league's that's Ted dintre Smith who has written about Lawrenceville's decision to understand how much their students were absorbing and they do this great experiment and I think more power to them where they retest to kids in the fall on the essential things they covered the prior school year did they retain what they had studied so they took a test in the spring they went away to do whatever they did during the summer and then they came back in the fall in the evolution was interested they took their final in June some people there said was seven retake the file some of the faculty were nervous and said well there's a low level stuff in the final they may not remember thanks to question whether it be on a final but they said take out the low level stuff it's just retest the kids on the essential concepts we think all of our students mastered the average grade went from the deep plus two and a half not one kid over two years and lots of subjects retained everything that they thought they all had retained and they realised if you just crammed into short term memory for an exam that you really are just doing to jump through the hoops that doesn't stick and if it doesn't stick it begs the question of what was the point dentures Smith has actually spent years asking that very question what's the point he was a venture capitalist and he became wealthy funding growing tech companies but along the way he started to wonder how effective our education system wise because when it came to who became successful in that companies that he founded he found himself noticing some strange patterns the applicants the founders with the impeccable academic credentials weren't very good at innovation it was often a more get a check mark resume lots of season lots of and just weird was better than straight day once he retired having seen the rise of automated factories and the increasing power of artificial intelligence to do lots of tasks that used to be done by humans dintre Smith started crisscrossing the country visiting schools and seeing how they were preparing kids for the jobs of the future and what he found worried him all the things they need to be really great a world defined by innovation are being discouraged and they're being encouraged to memorize material replicate low level procedures and follow instructions which is exactly what machine intelligence excels at it so if the high water mark if the the figure of merit in our schools is something machine intelligence does perfectly for free what's that leave our kids and I just said well this is this is it not a little thing this is defining for society for our nation he went on to make a documentary and to write books about what he was seeing including his most recent what school could be the basic model of the many schools it here too today most by it by far the margin is geared up for the industrial economy you know as I said memorize material replicate low level procedures follow instructions that define the jobs of the last century the problem is those jobs are gone but that model just clings in cleansing clings and trying to get us to reimagine school away from that I think it's our biggest challenge the frustration of having come from the tech world where he could see that all sorts of jobs had disappeared and all sorts of others were on the chopping block and then heading into schools that didn't seem to be preparing kids for that change to reality it made interest math worry about the possibility of widespread marginalization and alienation I started saying that this you know goes back ten years ago I'd say to my friends that if we don't get school right fairly quickly I'm not convinced our democracy will hold together and ten years ago people thought I just and lost it I mean you knew you knew they were sourcing retirement's not agreeing well with that he should get back to venture capital in my last one hundred talks when I say that nobody that's a lie because if people are feel marginalized if they're under constant pressure if they're not equipped coming out of school to create their own path forward if they're feeling like they're victims too robotics are smart software or whatever they're marginalized they just feel like they've been cut off from things in for setting up not a few kids before setting up millions of kids to fail in different ways you know I think the kids in the power schools that that just take great pride in their test scores are being set up to fail in one way the kids in the schools it's heartbreaking to see some of the schools that have the building should be condemned they they're not getting anywhere near the resources they need because they're in a low income community with low property taxes they have their own different set of challenges but they're in trouble and just for the sake man if we don't give young kids you know teenagers a fair shot in life you know if we don't make those years zero through fifteen sixteen eighteen relatively balanced and equitable to give kids a fighting chance we're selling the seeds for our destruction and I think that's playing out as we speak welcome back to Ted Ginn Jr Smith a little bit later but that concern that its education imperiling the future of our country it's not something that we hear a whole lot about in presidential debates at least recently it has felt dwarfed by other issues from guns to immigration but if there's any truth to the idea that our current educational system is compromising the country's future it's probably something that we should be hearing a lot more about we will run into people that have have said and will say well you don't work for me worked for me and and look I turned out fine and therefore the only got one data point themselves worked okay for means so you know why do we need to change that's another former tech guy Doug Burgum someone who is intersected a lot with the interest Methodist interest rate has traveled the country preaching a different sort of education model only Burgum's path in life went in another direction though you can hear the tech background coming through in the way he talks we want to get data in the room and get the ideology out of the room and again it's also going to take values because it takes constant take courage try to new things you can take the humility to for all of us to admit that what we were doing wasn't the best for all students and we're gonna have to you know have the curiosity to keep trying new things because some of the stuff we try first may not be the right thing I mean some of the innovation may not work Burgum is now the governor of North Dakota and he's decided the status quo when education is not okay public schools in America have to be reinvented and there's not a whole lot of time to lose not surprisingly North Dakota is the lab where Bergen plans to prove this and this particular lab is a pretty experimental one first off Burgum wants to get rid of grade levels you know the look the traditional learning model was you know you take a group of kids and let's call it they were in third grade you all start out the year together and then at the end of the year then you know the goal is let's push a hundred percent of those kids on the fourth grade now during that time that they were in third grade would all of them have learned the same amount knowing it might be reflected that some of kids you know got aids and they were bored because they'd already achieve their what was being asked of them somewhere during the year and then they're kind of board going forward other people are struggling to keep up but we know that you know even in a group of third graders their age read might be a year apart we know that they're learning styles may be different and so if we're trying to you know teach to like a batch processing you know like I've nineteen sixties mainframe for trying to do that you're not going to get the results verses if you have the ability to do personalize learning for each student it's a learner and that learners can learn differently in a different different rates in different pace if you said okay we're gonna actually say these are the skills they need to have by sixth grade these are the proficiencies they have to demonstrate these are the masters they have to have well you know someone might be further ahead in all third at the end of third grade than someone else but the person who's behind when they go to fourth grade instead of okay now you're starting at the next in a whole new set of things and you got a C. in math when you were a third grader they just start where they left off at the end of third grade and go okay I've still got to learn these things because in these classrooms where this is working sometimes the the teacher now is freed up from trying to stand in front of teach the whole batch we have an opportunity to work individually they get more time if there's transparency the classroom about the students that are more advanced they can actually be resources to help kids that are further behind kids will go to other students for help in course that's one way they reinforce their learning is by sharing and teaching with others and we have to have the humility to say that what we've been doing doesn't work for everyone I it works for some doesn't work for everyone and and and it's you know time to rethink that if we really care about students in learning we've got we got a late goal of the patterns and approaches that all of us in might say well at work for work for me right why change I mean that that's a really radical departure that you're describing where a teacher does not stand up in front of the class and say okay folks today we're gonna start learning long division you have individual kids and it's almost like monitor Montessori approach for your individual kids sort of at different levels of reading and math they're all sitting in the same room nobody's lecturing to them we talk about in some ways grades like that the notion that you're in third grade or fourth grade or fifth grade that kind of falls away because if you're in the same class with somebody but you're in different places what does it really mean to be in fifth grade right yeah I know exactly because it is would be more about you know have you cheat the levels of proficiency and coursework that you're set out to achieve in where you are at that level and again everybody everybody is a learner and learners learn at different paces and different approaches and we just you know and we start without basis of acceptance that alone is going to change and then of course we know that one of the challenges when we talk to teachers around the state today they say well we're dealing with so many behavioral health issues in the classroom we don't really have time to teach that's one of things we hear one you know schools that have gone around the country some the leading schools that approach this model or seeing a big drop off on on referrals you know referrals would be the word for Hey you know you're not behaving I'm sending it to the principal's office but some of those you know drop because now you're engaging kids at the level that they can engage and they're neither you know board nor behind in gets a chance to meet them more weather out and understand what might be going on in their life outside of school that's causing them you don't have you know behavioral challenges in school and we we can be.

"I can tell you I have talked to ample people who have looked at this over the years and who favored the idea, and they have all come to the same conclusion there any land north of Atlanta where you could build an airport. There's this thing called a mountain, and they begin to start growing on the north side of Atlanta. There's also. So this thing called urban sprawl of the north side of Atlanta between the mountains and the urban sprawl the land costs to be able to build an airport north of Atlanta is extraordinarily high. You do have the airport at Lawrenceville. You do have the PDK, but the PDK ain't happening because the neighborhood you do have the Fulton County airport, but that's not happening either. Because situation around there in polling county once an airport Delta's vigorously fought it, Paul ding would actually be the only other viable option. But you have all these people who live south of the city now in the corridor between Atlanta and make in his growing thicker with people you could divert some of the pressure down there. I just think that an airport authority needs more than just the Atlanta airport in it. I do support this though, I support the legislation for one significant reason the Atlanta airport is the economic engine of Georgia, not just Atlanta. And I don't think having the mayor of the city of Atlanta, and the mayor's cronies in charge of the airport is a good idea this level of corruption has been going on for a long time. And there's historic reason for the reason the way the are of I don't think most people realize that the mayor basically picks the people who then pick the people who run the airport and city council of Atlanta really has no oversight over this in the reason is because historically Atlanta. Remember was the city too busy to hate. And you didn't want to have a bunch of big. It's possibly blocking contracts to black vendors at the airport. You put the mayor in. Charge. The mayor was the fairest person needed a BI partisan biracial coalition to get elected..
