"Imagine for a second that you're a musician on tour. You're playing a stadium filled with thousands of fans, and when it's over, what do you know about the audience that cheered and sang along with your songs? Probably very little. But the pandemic has changed that. Without tours to go on and concert venues to pack out musicians had to find other ways to connect with fans. And they did it through live streaming and messaging services. That gave them a lot of new data on their fans. Joining me to discuss how that data is changing the music industry is our reporter and steel. Hi Anne, thanks for being here. Hi, thanks for having me. What kind of data would musicians likely have had on their fans before the pandemic started? And who was getting in controlling that? So artists and their teams, their managers and agents really did not have much. I mean, you could monitor handles of who was following you on social media. And then if you had some sort of effort where you collected fans emails and some sort of fan club manner, maybe you had that information, but really fan clubs have really given way to social media in recent years. And so artists just really haven't had the same access and knowledge about who their fan base is. So one of the biggest ways that artists connect with their fans is on the road and that's how they make most of their income too. Most artists make about 70, 80% of their living touring on the road. However, those tours, those shows those concerts, those festivals are run by promoters. And so it ends up being the big promotion company and taking companies that know who's coming to this show and have that fan data. Okay, so the pandemic that stopped touring from happening, but how did that change how musicians interacted with fans and what data they were then gathering on them? So the pandemic really put musicians in a lurch because not only was 2020 suppose was to be the biggest year for touring ever with almost 30 billion in revenue, highest ticket prices ever more artists on the road than ever before going to more places, charging higher prices than ever. So when that all came to a pause and there were these postponements and cancellations, first of all, that cuts into revenue in a huge way. But then also, in this era of always being on and they're being so much music out there, it is so important for artists to stay in connection with their fans. And if you're not on the road and that's the way that you've been staying in touch with your fans and keeping them fans and feeding that fan base, then that's really hard. And so basically, a lot of artists looked online for different ways to perform and connect with fans. So a lot of that ended up being virtual concerts and some of them quite lo fi, you know, just going live on Instagram or Facebook or whatever, but we saw this explosion of new apps and websites and services basically to help artists perform, chat, interact with their fans in a virtual way. So they're interacting with their fans in a different way. Did that give them new information on maybe who their real fans were? Yeah, so with this explosion of new platforms, basically came this huge treasure trove of data about who was tuning in, how long they were tuning in, how they were spending money and their time on these platforms. And a lot of these platforms are sort of like new upstarts, maybe they were building something before the pandemic started, but then the pandemic hits, people are locked down and everyone's tuning in online, so they kind of had their moment to shine, but with this explosion of platforms, there was also this competition among the platforms, and one of the ways that platforms could distinguish themselves was, hey, look at all the things I can tell you about your fan base. Here's the things we can collect. Even just basic things like name, phone number, email, location, that's super valuable, but the more granular data, like who was tuning in and for how long did they do a VIP experience? Did they buy merchandise? And then over time, too, if you're doing a weekly live stream or something, do you have one fan that's coming or a few fans that are coming to every single show and really spending their time or their money with you? That's a really important thing because in the era of streaming, it's a lot easier to find fans in all sorts of corners of the universe. So in general, artists have more fans and more places. In one instance, we saw this virtual J pop star AI. They found that 60% of her ticket buyers for this live stream were from the United States. And this was kind of a surprise. Because she's an anime artist from Japan. So her team will definitely take that data into account when planning her tour for next year. I would imagine that while you'd want to know who you're super fans are while you'd want them to spend as much money as they could on your concerts or merchandise, most musicians want to grow their fan base. So how do they do that if they're kind of looking at this narrow data? So this data not only kind of shows you who you're super fans are, but gives you feedback on your work. So if your live streaming something and you see the part in your set where people started to tune out or the part in the set where people really started to interact and throw emojis into the chat or what have you, you can kind of see how fans are reacting to your music and the different things that you do. How are fans reacting to all of this? Because, you know, when our data is given away or when we're sort of specifically targeted, sometimes you can feel a little creepy, but if you're a super fan, I imagine it's probably kind of fun. If you're a super fan, I think it is fun. And a lot of these things to be clear, they ask fans to opt in in a more active way. So for instance, one label that I was speaking with monster cat, they have relied heavily on this text messaging platform community, which allows brand celebrities artists to text with their fans and consumers. So this is something that fans want and really especially with the younger generation like Gen Z fans want and sort of expect you to have more information and use that to create a better experience for them. "From the north Lawndale employment at work they're doing great things to help serve under an unemployed residents of the north Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago land and the surrounding communities so we're gonna talk with them in a couple minutes first Pauline is here and she's got some foreign guests of from Athenaeum theatre pay Paulina heights I heart media Paulino here and I am sitting today with Jeff in Allen from Athenaeum theatre I say right you're right is we are from home theater productions at the Athenaeum theatre I love that and now you're telling me all the affair of what that stands for what that means well out was named after Athena who is the goddess of wisdom knowledge in the arts okay the building was actually built by German immigrants on the campus of saying all fathers in nineteen eleven so why the Germans chose a difficult Greek name I have no idea but we turned it into a positive so don't pronounce it or does it correctly but it is Athenaeum theatre no matter how you say it means great theater in Chicago great theater in Chicago I love that you're located in lake view correct correct in the late the community area the corner and we're actually on on Southport at Wellington southward and Lincoln where they enter in there's act all very nice to get a little more about the feeder a little history behind it well actually in theater productions nine years ago moved into this one hundred and eight year old jam of a building and brass were asked to to bring some life back to the Athenaeum it had to have kind of fallen some hard times and so the first thing that we did was we look to see what had what we have to use and what we needed to to to hang from there basically so we started using the main stage which is something they have not been using all the utilizing because we knew that the main stage could help us to actually pay for everything else so that we could do that which which we really choose to do as as a mission which is to make affordable space available to Chicago and Chicago area arts organizations not for profits we have three studio theaters we have this beautiful mainstage theatre of nine hundred eighty five seats the studios are significantly smaller and we have rehearsal spaces that are that are run on top yeah and we're we're just continuing a long tradition I mean the building itself was built as the social center for Saint Alphonsus perish next door okay and they built this specifically to do arts the opera house a bill to do folk opera an orchestral works the meeting rooms were work or put into to deal with all the community groups within the parish that evolved into classrooms for a school in that involved into studio theaters today so we are part of a long line of arts being in that building and you know what used to be a a German ethnic Catholic enclave is now open to every arts group every ethnic group in the city of Chicago Chicago has a really rich off loop theater community yes unfortunate well not fortunately fortunately for us there are more companies than there are homes for those companies and so they are looking for spaces they're looking for venues that are affordable so that they can create their art and that's one of the things that well I six the most important thing that we do we are there to support them that's that's the only reason that the Athenaeum theatre productions really exists is to support those folks and to be the steward of this but this beautiful old one hundred and eight year old building yeah that history behind it unless it's really our strength I mean we have the for the for theater spaces where we are we have six resident their companies over a dozen resent dance companies our fifteen different not for profit performing arts groups have offices in the building it really is the crossroads of Chicago's theater orchestras dance companies drama comedy we do podcasts wow which we do not do on the stages of the Athenaeum theatre seeing come five nights a week and see five different shows in five different genres all being produced locally by artists here in Chicago I'd like it to go ahead sorry you know in the last for five years we've really of we forge some relationships with with some really wonderful commercial ventures as well who bring it who have who have brought in some shows that make it possible for us to to keep our costs low we've actually had some some wonderful friends come and we have the daily show there for a week so Trevor Noah was on our stage he and yes I know it is amazing and and the Netflix folks came in and bomb Goldthwaite but was the director of with panels and Patton Oswalt his latest Netflix annihilate Angelo annihilation which was another wonderful opportunity to have these types of of different events coming in that audiences can and can buy tickets and see we've advise Jeff mentioned the the live podcast world we we seem to be the center of that in Chicago we work very closely with a lot of different radio stations and podcasts Joe Biden was on our stage last year nine we have a a a meat eater podcast which is all about hunting we had live and what Jim didn't want to tell anyone is he's actually related to the guy from any other yeah No Way Out yes it's a distant cousin and that's close I'd have on our stage awesome I love that that you guys are also like have enough space for the podcast world because I'm sure you know how big that is too it's it's the flavor of now yeah it is I get what we've all been sure but right now it is the it's it's it's the latest folks listen to those those podcasts and they want to see the the body that's connected with the voice that they've been listening to it they have a built in audience somewhat happening at the theater I'm loving it I love to live in lake view because I mean typically as and you know for Chicago I believe the theater district occurred before wrong too is primarily in the loop right well there's there's a couple there there is the Belmont theater district which the affidavit right right to where the highest concentration of theaters outside of the loop the term that he lived Peter was actually coined at the Athenaeum theatre for theater first which was theatre company that existed at the Athenaeum from the nineteen fifties to the nineteen eighties so off the loop theater the actual term started at the Athenaeum theatre I sat in on that the more you know that's amazing and I like the neighborhood so for me it's kind of like a a was a fun time I'm from the south side so I like going anywhere they can cross rules about I think it's a good time we pull people in from all over the city I bet the state all over the region country yeah we rent because that diverse programming S. is really is because on the map with some a new groups that then come to see a show that come back to us and say Hey I love to see this or I have a company that wants to perform do you have space for us and the answer will can only say is yes if we have availability right so we try to be open to all I love the diversity part of it too because like we say no podcasts and the theater production what's your most popular show right now or event right now we have a couple of really wonderful small musicals playing in the studio theaters where hell black button hide productions like but night production is doing whisper house and brown paper box is viewed it is doing that for them and these are two of Freddie new musicals and playing in our studio theaters and then also this weekend we we have Chicago academy for the arts coming in and doing an all school showcase we have a wonderful relationship with the other dance program but also the school of Chicago academy for the arts they can they they come in and do a couple three shows a year next weekend wonderful events on on Saturday the fifteenth of of February dances from the heart this is part of emergence dance and dance Chicago do you celebrating its twenty fifth anniversary right now Dan Chicago started at the Athenaeum and here it is twenty fifth year use the the final event of this year which is dad dances from the heart which will feature different styles of dance everything from probably tap to silks in the air ballet modern jazz all of dances that really is everything having to do a dance dance Chicago is the longest running dance festival in the city of Chicago the twenty nineteen twenty twenty season is its twenty fifth anniversary so something else to hang our our had we talk about being the oldest continuously operating off loop theater on the other superlatives are busiest both differs and you know just it's it's an amazing place we and we invite everyone to come on down to the Athenaeum theatre check out our website that's always the best place to find out what's coming up next we're doing a screening for gallon tines day of the movie coal that was produced locally here in Chicago that's supported by cook county commissioner of Bridget dungeon dung and and a lot of the alderman so it's about a twenty three year old woman has breast cancer all of them the proceeds from the that screening are going to be going to cancer research and other groups here in the city of Chicago so we try to work with a lot of different not for profit groups if they've got a mission that they wanna do some fundraising traffic gallon turns event there will also be an opportunity to to meet the filmmakers which is always exciting and that is we we hope that everyone can can take advantage of that as well there's a screen there's a screener on our website okay a little clip of the movie and tickets are on sale at our website and our box office you can actually come into the out the name there we actually have a physical box officers from the box office people there to help you friendly I love that I'm more of a small but mighty mighty team amazing yeah I'm so online or you can say in person you can call us at seven seven three nine three five six eight seven five that's.
