"I have all these dogs to choose from. And out of the dogs, I take Titan, which is not only a pit bull, but is a male pit bull. And everyone thinks that I'm going to be picking a human in a female human and I go home with a nail Pitbull. So Titan gets the rows. And it's a great message. A great message because pitbulls really, they do get a bad rap and especially media. And I'm afraid my peers, when they find a dramatic story about a pitfall mauling or something like that, they run with it. And the fact of the matter is that pit bulls can be very docile and can be very friendly and very loving, right? Well, a 100% and pitfalls are in born to be aggressive and to fight. Usually and I would say in over 90% of the cases, whenever a pit bull bites, it's been trained by donor to do that. And they're smart guys and they're very loyal dogs and they listen to their owners. So if the owners rewarding the dog for biting another dog or biting a human, it's positive in reinforcement to the breed, and that's where they get all the bad rap from. It's not, it's not because of that breed it's because of how they've been brought up. And. Humans aren't that different either. If we're going up in our parents are telling us that feelings good, we believe our parents and we want to make them proud and we continue to steer but not because we want to do it because we want to make sure that our parents are proud of us and in a way that that's how people react when all they want to do is prove their owners and if you take a puppy pit bull a simple that's never been anyone, that dog is the most lovable breed that you can find out there is in my opinion. Absolutely. Well, you know, the big biters are like doxxing. And it's just that. Yeah, but they're just not as strong. They don't inflict as much damage so they don't make headlines when you get bit by a dachshund that chihuahua. We're with prince Lorenzo borghese. Are you still a bachelor? Bachelor. Okay. I'm Laurie Brooks, if you are a pet parent, well, there's a few days of the year that you probably dread like New Year's Eve and the 4th of July. Fireworks just drive animals crazy, especially dogs with their sensitive hearing. Many, in fact, will hurt themselves trying to escape the noise or hide. Dogs can bolt and then they risk getting lost or hit by a car, many wind up in shelters. Well, one town in Italy is now taking a huge step to reduce the fear of fireworks in their non human population. They're making a new law that fireworks in their town must now be silent as a way of reducing the stress that the loud noise can cause to animals, not just pets, but also to wildlife too. All right, wait a minute now. It's okay, 'cause I have to comment on something. Of course. How do you sell fireworks that are silent? I want to go into that market because the company that makes it. Really? Yeah, that's what I found in the article. There's a company that makes them and they're starting to do booming business. But I thought the same thing. That would be no pun intended. How much? Let's think about this now. We might corner the market here. I don't know how they do that. It's a little silencers on each one. I like the visual better than the noise. Three months ago, a dog named pirate and his owner arrived at a hospital in Argentina. The dog's owner had to go into the hospital for surgery, but sadly he passed away. Pirate, though, never let the hospital and now he roams the halls, hoping to meet up again with his human. Hospital workers don't even know their dogs real name, so they dubbed him pirate because they say no matter how hard they tried to keep him outside of the hospital. He got into the house center and visits the last place that he saw his owner alive. That was room four O four. Well, according to a local newspaper there, when the pet owner died, the hospital staff, one of the dog gone. However, their feelings towards pirate have changed a bit when they realized how loyal a dog he was, now pirate has been officially adopted as the hospital's mascot and comes and goes as he pleases. In fact, they say nobody really knows where they can find pirate during the daytime hours, but at night he can always be found comfortably sleeping outside room four O four. I'm Lori Brooks. "Laurie Brooks, the world's largest animal cloning factory is now under construction in China, and it's got plans to churn out pats, police dogs, racehorses, and a lot of beef cattle that will be sold on the open market on a huge scale. It's estimated that it will have the capacity for more than 100,000 cattle embryos in its first year with plans to expand to 1 million of those embryos, a joint venture between the two companies involved, started China's commercial cloning market, producing Tibetan mashed if puppies. Well, it's always nice to have pets around. There's a new study out. It finds that having a dog to cuddle up to and play with is great for children as those kids are less likely to suffer from anxiety because of the dog. The study included more than 350 children between the ages of four and ten who had a dog in the family and found that out of 58% of children who had a dog, only 12% tested positive for anxiety in comparison to 21% of the kids who didn't have a pet. According to the National Institute of mental health, anxiety disorders affect at least one in 8 children. Experts say childhood anxiety is a major mental health problem in this country and that anything they can do to lessen anxiety or even prevent its development would have a big impact on our mental health system. And here's a video you should really check out if you haven't seen it yet. On their one year anniversary, the couple were talking about released the most beautiful wedding video ever to be filmed.

"That cool? And did you guys hear about this story, a cat named stinker? He's in Southern California or was back with his family more than a year after he disappeared while a film crew was making a movie using his family's home. The family looked everywhere for stinker, who they had found as a kitten abandoned on the side of the two ten freeway. So when they visited their local shelter, in search of stinker, they were told of a cat fitting stinkers description had recently been hit by a car near their home, so it kind of looked like, you know, all the pieces fit together. So they assumed it was stinker and stopped their search. Now fast forward, a year later, the family moves to Connecticut, thinking that they might finally be ready to add another new pet to their life. They started looking at the shelters in Connecticut. But they didn't find what they were searching for, so the husband checked photos of their old California shelter for animals that were there. And he found a cat that looked just like stinker. So he calls the next door neighbor and asked the neighbor to go to the shelter, so the neighbor goes to the shelter, and then the former dad and stinker are in the shelter, FaceTiming each other through the neighbor. So the next day, this guy flies out to Los Angeles from Connecticut to see for himself. And yes, a very happy ending for a long story that could have been solved much faster and more easily, had stinker had a microchip. Which he does now. I bet he does, yeah. But a happy ending. We just had a Katie brought into our office that was missing for 6 years. And was found had a microchip and was reunited. Unfortunately, she was found because she has bladder stones, and we had to do surgery. And she's on the mend from that. But her family was so thankful to get her back 6 years later. How did they react after 60 years? I mean, you pretty much write off an animal after that. They were happy regardless that they got their kitty back. You gotta love those stories. I mean, just microchip Friends microchip. I'm Laurie Brooks, get more breaking animal news anytime at animal radio dot com. This has been an animal radio news update. Get more

We report here on animal radio about all kinds of research that shows how beneficial it is to have animals and pets in our lives. Today is no different. We get another one. The good news here is this study, specifically mentions asthma, which is a huge problem for many families. And this study shows exposure to dogs or even farm animals at a very young age, is linked to a lower risk for childhood asthma at age 6. In the study in the journal of the American medical association pediatrics, they looked at over 650,000 kids and did find a possible benefit to being around animals very early on in their lives. And farm animal exposure was linked to a 52% lower risk for school aged children and a 31% lower risk of having asthma among preschool age kids. That's pretty amazing. And that's apparently because more pet owners now prefer smaller dogs to be their companions. Researchers analyzed nearly three decades of registrations in order to get this information. They were registrations with the kennel club, but UK based dog welfare organization. They found dog lovers are also increasingly opting for bulldogs and pugs because of their large heads, but get this, the bulldog pug popularity is also said to be driven partly by their big eyes and chubby cheeks that apparently triggers the same caretaking behavioral responses in humans that we adults have towards babies. The study in the canine journal genetics and epidemiology found the average height of a dog in 2010 was 47.7 centimeters, or to us that's almost 19 inches. Ten years earlier, a typical dog stood at close to 20 inches tall. The lead researcher on that study says they also found that the demand for smaller dogs has increased every single year since 1986. Pet sematary are becoming increasingly popular these days in China with owners they're paying a whole lot of money to bury their pets. It costs between 50 and $1800 for an owner in China to bury their pets on a plot in a cemetery there. Rows of tombstones at one cemetery, they say bear the names of many pets, along with flowers, toys, food, and even vitamins and chew bones that are placed beside the headstones, pet owners who wish to give their animals in China more formal send off can opt to bury their animal under the roots of old trees or in a single grave and like an America that can also opt for cremation. While this cat has got more than your tongue. And it might be kind of embarrassing. A pet cat in New Zealand has been stealing men's underwear and socks from other people's homes. In the last two months, the 6 year old cat named Bridget acquired 11 pairs of underwear and more than 50 pairs of socks. Bridget's owner says sheep has put notes in every single mailbox on her street trying to warn her neighbors, but no one is admitting to missing anything yet. But one day they say Bridget came home from being outdoors, very motherly, then came in carrying a sock like it was a kitten. So maybe that's her attraction. You know, I'm always wondering where that sock went. That extra stock. Every time I do laundry, maybe we have. That could be. You missing any underwear hell. I am. This has been an animal radio news update. Get more at animal radio dot com. I'll just check when she asked that it's gone. You had them on just a minute ago. You know that would be a good way, honey. I don't know who's underwear. That is to catch what the man. Is there something you want to tell me, dear? It's animal radio. Celebrating the connection with our pets. And over the last several weeks, we've been talking about the base pause cat DNA test and as you know, we have two animal radio studio stunt cats, meeps, and sputters, we got them what a little over a year ago? Yes, just a little over a year ago. They were four weeks old when we got them and we had to bottle feed them. And they're supposedly brothers. That's what they told us. We got them from a rescue in Los Angeles, and they said that they were from the same leader, but I'll tell you, one is a little bigger than the other. I'm not going to say overweight because he's in the room. And that would just be rude. I mean, they kind of have different personalities too. One's more of a cuddler and one's very inquisitive. Wouldn't you say? Yes, and they also have different coats. One is a thicker coat, one is a regular coat. And I mean, there are different colors, but we all know that a breed consists of many colors. So I'm just wondering because I know sometimes that a cat can have kittens from different fathers in one litter. I'm curious to see if they might actually have different fathers. Okay, so we heard about the base pause DNA test. The primary reason for the test would be mostly to find out what breed your cat is to understand its personality traits. But there's also some health factors too. You'll not only find out if they're a carrier of a disease, but if they're prone to get it. I know I had a cat that had a blood disorder that I had no idea and I didn't find out till he was about 9 years old and we had to start treating it. If I had known sooner, I might have been able to get him on a course before that. The reason we're doing the test, of course, is to find out if these cats are related because we're skeptical that they're from the same litter. Yeah, but after having other cats how I still want to know any potential diseases they may have. And I want to know now. Okay, well, we're going to do the test right now. It looks like meeps, I think it went off that way there. We're going to get meeps the studio stunt cat for this particular test here. Again, this is the base pause cat DNA test. It's about a $129 over at their website and if you use the code animal radio, you'll get $25 off of that. Their website is base pause BASE, PAWS dot com. You're going to have to hold on to him for just a second because I don't have it open yet. Let's see. So they have inside the kit here they have swab and an envelope and a container with some kind of purpley liquid and I'm going to read the instructions. Okay, it looks pretty simple. Go ahead and grab meeps, if you will. There's a cotton swab that's attached to a bottle of purple liquid. And we're going to get the cotton swab. Actually, it doesn't look like it's cotton. It may be some other material. Okay, so it says here, swab, the cheek pouch for 5 seconds to collect saliva. I don't know what's simple. It was so easy. Okay. Okay, I got it. Meeps has been very cooperative today. I always say that meeps needs to earn his keep around here. And okay, so now I put the cotton swab invert it. Yeah, invert it and put it into the purple liquid and close it, and did I get it closed? Okay, and then I shake it up ten times. So I'm shaking it up and down. That was ten times, right? Yes. Okay. And then I just pop it right in the envelope. What was the envelope? And then it goes back into the box again. So don't destroy the box. Good thing I didn't rip that box open. I was about to do that, but it goes into the same box that it came in. Oh, we're supposed to write our cat's name. On the box right over there. So I'll let you do this, okay. And then we just sitting on back. We should get a report. I understand anywhere from a month to a little less than two months. And that report will have all the hereditary genetic information, the health conditions that your cats may be predisposed to. Once again, you can get it at base pause dot com that's BASE, PAWS dot com and put it in the code animal radio and you'll get 25 bucks

"Hello animal radians, it's Robert simmer, your pet world insider, here with this week's animal radio list, 5 reasons you should adopt a cat. June is adopt a cat month and the perfect time for you to consider adopting a cat. And this year I'm certain more men than ever, are heeding this message as well. Why? Well, in recent years, there's been an uptick in men adopting cats. But regardless of your gender, cats can make a wonderful addition to your home, and I'm going to share 5 reasons why you should welcome a cat into your family. To begin with, you're saving lives. Now I know that may seem obvious, but for many it's not. Yes, it's important to find a home for cats in need as they deserve a forever home where they can flourish. However, the saving lives part may also include you and your family members. Studies have shown that pets can lower blood pressure and be tremendous stress busters. Just a few minutes with a cat can make a world of difference in your physical and mental health. Next is that they're nonstop entertainment without the need for a computer or TV screen. Cats are incredibly entertaining creatures who don't need much to find joy in. From a simple box to paper to a ribbon or just looking out the window at the world, a cat's ability to entertain themselves is something that quickly becomes entertaining to all around them. Cats are also able to find joy in just viewing the world from a different angle. Enjoy watching all the different ways your can't find to rest or relax in spaces and on ledges that simply defy gravity, if not common sense. Next is that they're very intelligent, and they take less effort in many ways than dogs do. They don't need a lot of paw holding or opening of doors to use the green room. In fact, most cats figure out the litter box routine quickly and easily. Additionally, they bathe themselves and don't have to be told twice to do so. This is great because it's healthier and safer as putting a cat in water is not a fun chore for those of us who are not scratch resistant. Another reason is that they're easy to adapt into your lifestyle. They're independent by nature and don't mind that you have to go to work for long hours each day or might need to continue working for a while when you get home. They're very good at letting you know how much time and attention they need, then when their people time tanks are filled, they go back to their safe spaces to relax, observe, and plot. Finally, and this is one that those who aren't camp people just don't get. They're excellent snugglers and cats are very affectionate. They're able to snuggle themselves in and keep you in themselves warm. They want to be around you and share close moments of tenderness while not crushing you. Yes, almost all cats are lap cats. If you're still not sure, turn on your Internet video channels and search for cats doing awesome things like playing keyboards, dressing up like stars, singing, and so much more. Share your reasons to adopt a cat on our animal radio, Facebook page. This is Glenn Close on animal radio urging you to spay or new to your pet. I am the family globe. I'm Laurie Brooks, a small team of women prisoners in Phoenix, is working with the Maricopa County sheriff's office, animals, safety unit. Now they call that mash. That's their acronym for that. Although I have to tell you, I don't know how they came up with that. But the program helps to comfort and train animals rescued from really bad situations. 6 days a week, the women in this program are transported to the animal shelter in a former men's jail, where rows of cells have been renamed Bow Wow way, per lane second chance and rough road. That's are you FF? Now, since the former men's jail was converted into a holding center to provide a safe haven for the animals, that was back in 2000. Thousands of dogs, cats and even a couple of horses have been cared for and adopted. Tiger, a pit bull terrier rescued from a dog fighting ring became the beloved mascot for mash during his nearly 9 year stay there before he finally got his forever home. The special unit, by the way, is the only agency they say in the country that does all of these things. It investigates animal cruelty complaints. They rescue animals they house in care for them and then they arrange for their adoptions, not any other agency does all of those things. In fact, they say the female only program lasts for 30 days in the women are interviewed in rigorously screened and it's a pretty cool program as one woman says, she's a prisoner. She says, these dogs are locked up just like we are. And they need love just like we do. And when we come here, it's not about us. A guy in Arizona captured a viral video of the method that he in some twisted way came up with to scare off a trash stealing black bear. The video shows a bear approach and investigate a trash can outside of his home. The trash can at this time now has a large and I mean like two feet long, clown doll strapped to it. Which appears to intrigue the bear and he comes over to check it out. So the bear then attempts to tip the garbage can over it to get that delicious trash from inside, but the movement triggers emotion sensor in the clown doll, which suddenly starts is really creepy loud laugh and flailing its arms and the clown's eyes are flashing red off and on. The bear wanted no part of it. He was a little scared and maybe creeped out to stop its trash digging and fled the scene quickly. I would, too, I don't like clowns. I don't either, Judy. This was pretty funny, but I felt sorry for the beer. And if you're eating, you might want to put that down for a minute, okay? I just set it aside because apparently there's more to mammals and their pooping behavior than what we already know. Experts say this might shock you. It takes an average of 12 seconds for mammals to poop and remember humans are mammals too. Because it saves them from predators. What? I mean, it sounds crazy. It was timing this stuff. Well, according to studies, mammals take an.

"So they are high maintenance. You know, they're not high maintenance the sense that you have to spend a lot of time, but you have to be very considerate about making sure that you are the right home for a turtle or a tortoise. Because you do need to take this small investment and make sure you do meet these needs. And sometimes it means going to the vet, you know, to take your turtle or tortoise in if there's a problem of respiratory infections or another big thing we see these guys for. I say why vet school is so long compared to medical school. You have to learn about all these different animals. Yes. It is definitely interesting. But the turtles and the tortoises are fun because you can just repair some shells last week and you can kind of dress them up a little bit, put a little bling on them. Can't you put solar panels on them and heat them up that way instead of having to keep a UV light on them? No, no, they haven't created that mechanism. For the shell yes. Okay. But you might want to work on that. That might be your calling. Maybe that'll be my $1 million idea. If you have a turtle, we'd love to hear from you. In fact, all of us in the studio or most of us in the studio have had a turtle at one time or another. So it's actually not that rare to have a turtle as a pet. Nope. And just a couple of minutes we're going to head to the newsroom. Lori, what are you working on? Channel cable, we were talking about common dog behavioral problems like barking, chewing, digging, and separation anxiety. Today we're going to talk about begging. It's a bad habit, but most of the time it's caused by the dog owner. A few years ago, a friend invited me over to his house for Super Bowl, told me I could bring my dog. I told my dog to go down stay in the corner and watch his dogs running lunatic all over the house. One jumped on the table and grabbed the ham right off ran away with it. There's two of them and he's got no control over either. They've got the run of the house and they're everywhere. He comes open to me. He goes, I don't get it. How do you get your dog to stay like that? I said, I'll tell you what, what's your biggest problem? What do you wish you could stop right now? He says begging, I want my dogs to stop begging from the table. And as he's telling me this, he's feeding the dog from the table. As he's talking to me, he's giving him pieces of turkey while he's talking to me. I don't think he even realizes it. So I pointed it out. I said, look what you're doing right now. You can't feed a dog from the table and then expect him not to beg. You know, it's gotta be one way or the other way. Either he never gets food from the table, people food, or he does. It's that simple. And if he does, he's gonna bet. Giving in just once causes a huge problem. In the dog world, a subordinate would never beg from the lead dog. When you teach your dog that begging so okay, you jeopardize your role as pack leader. Before you sit down to eat, tell your dog to stay. Create a spot where you want your dog to be. Maybe it's a rug in the kitchen. And before you sit down to eat, tell them to stay. Tell them to go to his rug. You want to teach your dog not to stare at you in that begging is useless. That it's not permitted. If he is staring, put him in another room. If he behaves himself, he gave him a treat, but only after you and the rest of your family are done eating. Over time, you'll be able to teach your dog that you are in charge and that begging from anyone in the pack or from any human period is just not permitted. And that it's useless. Another good thing to do is always eat before you feed your dog. And after you're done and you decide to feed them, make them work for the food. Have them sit and stay for 30, 40 seconds before you tell them to have at it. Well, good luck, we're all in this together. This is animal radio, baby. Do you have a home that you don't want anymore? I'm Laurie Brooks, you may have heard about the Canadian animal activist who gave water to pigs outside of a slaughterhouse. A simple act of kindness, that started a two yearlong legal battle and attracted attention from all around the world. The woman was charged with committing mischief and also faced the possibility of going to jail for 6 months, but finally, after so long, this month a judge has dismissed the case against Anita cries who was the founder of Toronto pig save because she poured water into the mouths of panting pigs as a truck transporting the pig stopped for traffic outside of the slaughterhouse where Anita was protesting that day. So it was a pretty long and contentious trial out of legal proceedings, but Anita says, though it is over, she is still disappointed that the judge did not recognize pigs and other animals as anything but mere property. It's not going to jail. You know what? Can.

"I'm Laurie Brooks, police in the town of Winkler up in Manitoba, Canada have been asking people to be extra vigilant when they buy anything online because they've had this case where three people were scammed out of hundreds of dollars when they bought dogs online that they never received. The victims at all recently responded to online classified ads saying that they had dogs for sale and yes, this does happen a lot in the U.S. too, but here is what happened. After conversing with the seller, the buyers were forced into paying these extra fees for services like Kennedy or shipping, insurance or excise taxes just about anything. But once the upset buyers started asking questions about all of these, you know, sudden additional fees, the seller then kind of forced them into paying by threatening to file lawsuits against them for abandoning the deal or by telling them they could be charged with animal cruelty from walking away from the sale. So in the end, none of the three people received their dogs. So it's something to watch out for. But you know, an easy way to avoid that scam is going to a local rescue shelter or by contacting any of the thousands and thousands of pet rescues and there are even breed specific rescues that usually take only purebred dogs. All of which have many a dogs that you can adopt. Yeah, I don't get that online. I mean, that's crazy, silly. Yeah. Yeah, and in that case, I guess you would just see videos of the dog, but you wouldn't, I don't know, I've never done it, so I probably shouldn't say, but you wouldn't have a chance to interact with a dog or, you know, see if it connects with you. Big mistake to go online to get an animal or a wife. Those two things. Hell knows from experience. Let my life serve as a.

"Vellani, news director Laurie Brooks, and now here are your hosts. How Abrams and Judy Francis. Thanks, big guy. Good morning dog father, how are you doing today? I'm wow. I'm getting royal treatment here. Good morning. That was just going great. How's things with you? Splendid. We have a cancellation on today's show. And poor Judy, she works so hard to really book the show and get the guests on time and in the right place. And you just had a cancellation with like in the last 20 minutes. Yes. So that most shows would be in a bind with that. By 19 years of doing this and we've had a million celebrities. Well, we've not a million. Probably close to a thousand great celebrities and experts on the show. So we're going to reach into the vault today and pick out a celebrity that we've had on the show. The big question. That's actually good because we've had so many great guests on. That's a problem. Sometimes I think back at some of the guests that we've had on. And I always say, oh, would it be cool to hear that interview again? So that's pretty cool. It's like, it's like, it's like a rerun, but it's not. It is cool. It is a flashback, but it's a problem in that. How do you pick? Which one do you pick? There's been so many. If there's one that comes to your mind, let us know. I know you were talking about Josh Duhamel. Yes. Because you think he's hot. Of course. And he is. I, of course, think of Jenna Fischer, but I think she's played a couple of times. Yes, we have. You know, who else was funny was Paul Reiser? Yes, that one came to my mind, too. So if you have any ideas, let us know if there's a particular celebrity that you've heard on the show in the last 19 years that you'd like to hear again. Can I give my request? Yes, absolutely. Okay. The last interview before he passed away, who was it? Our Davy Jones? Yeah, Davy Jones. The monkeys. Yes. Yes. Remember? We would have last interview. Okay, so let's write all these down and we'll kind of pick one before the end of the show today. Of course, between now and then it's all about you. Call now Judy will get you all queued up. Joey, what are you working on for today's show? I want to talk about the importance and why everyone needs to go see their professional groomer, not just the dogs with coat, but all dogs and cats. High end, what's going on with your schnauzer? Trying to get her to get back of eating her dog food. My husband gave her some table scraps and now she will not eat her food she's gone two days without eating and I had to try to figure out what to give. She's just not eating anymore. That's the one and also the second one was vitamin for her see what she recommend. We've heard about that. I'm sorry. Okay. Sure. Now, the first question I'll have for you is what did your husband feed her that she just wants to turn away from dog food? Oh, she's a little crocodile and he has given her a hot dog. Oh.

"This is an animal radio news update. And I'm Laurie Brooks, there's another big buyout planned in the world of pet food. General Mills says it has agreed to buy out Blue Buffalo pet products for about 8 billion dollars. General Mills will be paying about 40 bucks a share for Blue Buffalo, which sells dog and cat foods under brands like maybe you've heard blue life protection formula, blue wilderness and blue basics, anyhow the deal has been approved by both companies, boards of directors and such, but it does still need to be approved by government regulators and this deal comes as global food giants of all kinds are out there snapping up makers of natural and organic pet products, which are really outpacing other brands when it comes to growth. Well, now, more and more people with multiple pets are getting together. Dating or moving in together, pet people are attracted to each other. But everyone needs to be aware of how to introduce pets properly. Experts say, just like when your pet first met your new significant other, same thing. Plan to make the meet and greet of each of your pets on neutral territory, which is a whole lot easier to do with dogs, right? Than it is with cats. With dogs, of course, you can easily take them for a walk, but one of the biggest issues that arises when merging pet households is making sure that all the animals get along. So start off on the right foot, make it neutral territory to begin with. Perhaps the biggest challenge is when one pet is moving into another pet's home, try to manage it in that case so that at least for a few weeks, the pet who lived there first gets the majority of the space, and don't move that pet's toys or food bowls or even their bedding until that adjustment period is over. There is no magic number of days or weeks, but just make sure that you know the signs of potential conflict, especially for dogs. Things to look out for with dogs include when they lower their tail or they start licking their lips or turning their head away or even cowering. And if you see a fight brewing between cats, separate them before it gets out of hand. Finally, Malcolm Alexander, he spent nearly four decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. Fortunately though the innocence project worked on Malcolm's case and he got the proof needed to prove his innocence, but only after spending 38 years behind bars. Now, however, when he left prison, mister Malcolm Alexander was not alone. In fact, the day after he was freed, he got to reunite with the dog that he had raised behind bars. The dog was a 9 month old puppy, her name is innocent for he called her in for short. And as a well behaved inmate, mister Alexander was allowed to have innocent with him as a companion animal in prison as part of a special program which allowed the dog to even go to his prison work sites with him. He's just happy to have innocent with him. I'm Lori Brooks. Get more breaking animal news anytime at animal radio dot com. This has been an animal radio news update. Get more at animal radio dot com. Let's talk about dog behavior. Dogs need attention, they need your attention. It doesn't matter if it's positive attention or negative attention. If you're giving your dog attention, he thinks you're rewarding him. The best way to teach your dog how to behave is to only give him affection and attention when he's doing the right thing. The thing that he should be doing, ignoring your dog and taking attention away from him is powerful. Turning and walking away, turning your back on him, totally ignoring him. Let's say you bring your dog in from the street and you want to clean his paws with a towel. You get him to go down, and when you start to clean his paws, he starts moving around and fidgeting and you start getting frustrated. So you start talking to him. Lay still. Well, the more frustrated you get, the more you try to get him to lay there and let you clean his paws, the more he's going to get excited and jump around. So what's the answer? As soon as he starts to get excited, you just stand up quickly and stare off into space. Or walk away into the house and leave him there for a couple minutes. You might have to do it over and over again, but eventually he's going to get the message that if he asks that way, you're not going to pay any attention to him. You're not going to touch him. He'll start to realize that the bad behavior is not working anymore. And when your dog gets the idea that you want him to lay still. Or you want him to just lie down when people come over and ring the doorbell. He's going to do it because your dog wants to please you. And he wants to be with you. It's important to understand that dogs are very sensitive to you. Your body language. What you're doing, where are you looking? How are you carrying yourself? People get into trouble because they want their dogs to be there for them. When they want them there, then they want their dogs to do a disappearing act when they don't want them there. When they're not in the mood. They want to be able to flick the dog on like a light switch. Once you understand how dogs think, how they communicate what their body language means. You can teach them just about anything. How to go to the bathroom outside, how to heal, sit, stay, how to behave when people come over to the house. The key to it all is patience, calm leadership, and total consistency. So that your dog's able to learn the rules. Because dogs need rules. Doing that will make your dot com and fun to be around. And don't forget they need plenty of exercise. Get more tips and animal radio dot com. You're listening to animal radio. We love our pets and we're very concerned about what they ingest, what they eat. And Lori just reported that General Mills bought Blue Buffalo for $8 billion holy moly. There's really only a handful of companies that own all of these brands of food. You know, you go there, you go to the store and you look and you say, wow, how do I make a selection? Here's an amazing selection and variety, but really there's only about three or four major brands and they all source their foods from the same places. You might remember the melamine contamination many years ago. That's when it became really evident. That all of these foods are being sourced from the same place and that it's all about branding for the companies. I want you to think that you're getting some special healthy food. But it's just all the same crap. You know who we have back on the show right now is Jacqueline Bowen. She's the executive director for the clean label project. And she really woke me up to this whole problem a few months ago. When they tested 99 pet foods and found everything from arsenic and heavy metals in the food and of course he's on top of this whole thing that's going on with the pentobarbital in food. Hi, welcome back, Jacqueline. Thank you so much for having me. So for listeners that are just tuning in this week that don't understand how pentobarbital ends up in their food and their cats or dogs food. How does this happen? Well, it's really interesting because right now the FDA still has still not released the results of their investigation. One possible way is through contaminated ingredients. That one thing that we could possibly see is that the ingredients came from a rendered animal facility where essentially animals that had been euthanized were ended up ended up in the protein supply chain and were ultimately used in the creation of these finished products. Okay, so this is a company a big company smuckers, which we know for their jams and jellies. They own how many pet foods do they have? Oh, many, I know at least in terms of part of the recall, I know that both Roy was recalled as well as Skippy as well as, of course, gravy train in kibbles and bits. And that's.

I'm Laurie Brooks, yes, all dogs, souls go to heaven, but what you do with their earthly bodies after they leave? That's up to you. I say this because now you see you have more options. There is cremation, of course, bury them with a pet cemetery, or even as we talked about a few weeks ago, turning their ashes into synthetic diamonds, which is pretty expensive, starting at about $2500 for the smallest sized diamond. However, today we have another option for you. And Gardner's and environmentalist, you especially are going to love this. Now, you can have your pet composted. Composed by a company called rooted pet in Washington state. This method uses a lot less energy than firing up a big cremation oven. And requires less land than a graveyard. It's kind of like dust to dust, you know, returning to the earth. Now, this isn't really a new idea. In fact, it's the same method that a lot of farms use to dispose of dead livestock and it is how a lot of states these days deal with roadkill. But here's how rooted pet does it. And believe it or not, the process is done, indoors, and then in 6, sometimes 8 weeks later, it is all turned into dirt, basically a really great, dark, rich compost, which they say looks and smells like any compost that you would use in the garden. So once your pet becomes compost, you do have some choices. The company says you can let them use it on their farm for a tree planting project, or they can send you a potted house plant growing in your pet's compost. How novel is that? That is really an idea. Wow. I know you're wondering how much does it cost? Because I think it's very comparable to cremation. It's about $200 for pets between 21 and 50 pounds. And a little bit less like 20 bucks less for the medium size, and then for small small animals like birds and fish up to 5 pounds or less is a $149. For free, I can bury fluffy out by the old oak tree in pretty much do the same thing. Yeah, but it's not. I don't know, I guess, in some places you can't do that. I think it is illegal in a lot of places that you can not allow to bury them in your yard anymore. But, you know, my concern would be if I got a potted plant with my other animals smell it and want to dig in it? No. No. I mean, it's not like they would smell it like. Oh, that's a dead animal. Oh, that is spot or fluffier binky. It would be just like what you would get it, you know, Lowe's or Home Depot on the weekend and you get a big bag of compost. It's not potting soil, it's compost, so it's really rich organic all natural organic matter. You know, it's really healthy for plants. Jeez, elsie. Great idea. Your zucchini just tastes fabulous this year. Yeah, you might not want to tell people that you grew their tomatoes in that. But you know, I think it's very cool. And we're always into bringing you new things. You are. And you know what? Now, instead of being cremated or buried, I want to be compassed. Let me think about that. There's a man living in Florida who is facing eviction from his condominium. Unless he refuses to part with his ESA. Emotional services. Emotional support animal. Okay. I'm trying to train you because this is something we're going to be hearing a lot about. But in this case the ESA is a squirrel. Okay. Well, you know, whatever it is, rescued. Yeah, he rescued this female squirrel, who's in this I don't get he named it Brutus. So obviously he's not a conventional guy, but he rescued her shortly after hurricane Matthew. He says, she is really just like a cat, except she hides nuts and pecans and hazelnuts, by the way, are Brutus favorites. And he claims that he has required the required doctor's note, saying that he needs Brutus because he suffers from anxiety related to a car accident that happened more than ten years ago, but nevertheless, the condo association says Brutus is a wild animal and belongs outdoors and they have given him one month to find her a new home. Damn. I'm telling you, there's going to be so many cases over this stuff. I'm Laurie Brooks. Get more breaking animal news anytime at animal radio dot com. This.

Celebrating the connection with our pets, this is animal radio, featuring veterinarian doctor debby white, groomer Joey villani, news director Laurie Brooks, and now, from the red barn studios, here are your hosts. How a room's and Judy Francis and in just a few minutes anthro zoologist, which is apparently an emerging field. Anthro zoologist, John Bradshaw will be back with us, of course, he's written so many books. We've had him on for about each and every book that he's had. Last time he had him on, he told us that we could train our cats. I still haven't had any luck in that. Good luck with that. Yeah, they've trained us. His new book, the animals among us, how pets make us human. And he's going to talk about how it's just in our nature to love pets. And I want to find out why some animals are pets. Family members and with some animals are food. That's what I want to find out. I'm going to ask him about that. Also, we never asked him about his life and his animals. I want to know, he probably has a house full of animals, right? Yeah. He's got to do all that research. So I will ask that stupid question that I asked. Jackson. Jackson galaxy. Do you have cats? I will ask John. The obvious question. What animals do you have? And that's on the way in just a couple of minutes. Laurie, what are you working on? Well, there's another one of these cases in the news, and it's one of those cases that would just be your worst nightmare. Your dog is supposedly euthanized. By the vet, and then to find out months later that the animal is still alive. And in this case happened in New Jersey and we'll tell you all about it. Wait a second, didn't you just do you did this new story? Didn't you? I mean, I think that was Utah, though. You mean this has happened again? Again, again, yeah. Wow. It's kind of weird. I think probably most of us who are pet lovers probably tend to hold our animals as they're being euthanized, but apparently, I guess, well, it's doctor doctor Debbie. Maybe that's not done as often as we think it is. Oh, you need to be present is what you're saying from now on. You need to be present. We'll find out in just a few ideas. Which one are we going to Judy? We're going to go to line one. Pepper. What a pretty neat pepper. The music now, sir. Well, that's the person's name. Oh, it's the person. All right, well, it ruins that. Hi pepper, how are you? I'm fine, and I want to tell you, thank you so much for taking my call. Well, of course, with such a pretty name. How did you get the name pepper? I eat about 5 gallons of jalapeno peppers a week. Oh my. So it's not your name. The dog likes him too, huh? Now you don't have a regular name for the dog, do you? Well, I named him Casper because he's white. Okay. What's going on with Casper there? Well, I have two dogs. One is I have an ease and one is a bichon Casper. I had cast for about two years and I was making his own songs, which was ground Turkey, brown line, and on by the bag of frozen vegetables and put it in there and everything was going fine. I'm an over the road truck driver. Let me tell you that first. Okay. And all of a sudden he started getting like flatter infection kidney infection. One right after another. And I mean, it's not that I'm not taking him out and walking him. It's not that I'm not letting him walk long enough. I mean, every time I would go to the bed, it'd be like 354 $150 while they try to track this thing down. They treat it. They even went as far as to give me a prescription takes a Walgreens because he had to be on antibiotics for so long one time. Okay. And then you start chewing it as pause. And it's paused to turn pinkish looking and all around his mouth, real pinkish looking, and then he got another butter and thick. I take him back to the vet. He said, well, she goes, this just isn't right. Now this is when we were home, just about every weekend. So she did some investigating and she told me she said he needs to go. He's got a protein, a problem of simulating protein. And we need to put them on the urinary ISO. Okay. Well, I've got him on that, but I was just wondering if there is another alternative to it that this dog's big for vegetables. Or vegetables. He loves vegetables. All right. Listen, he loves jalapeno peppers. Any kind of vegetable that you will give him. Now, I want to back up for a minute because you said with Casper that he was having a lot of issues just because when I hear about a bichon who's having problems in the urinary nature, they are a breed very prone to bladder stones and particularly calcium oxalate based bladder stones. So one of the methods to deal with that is we will try a low protein diet and the SO type food if that's the one that you're talking about. By made by royal Canaan, that is appropriate for that kind of dog that has those kind of urinary issues. It is a low protein food. So if that's somehow related to his previous signs, then I would definitely endorse that prescription basically for you. You haven't had a problem since. Well, there you go. Then it's doing something. Well, at least I'm speculating. It's changed it all out. Sometimes it's anywhere from two to four months before we get home. And I realized this is the prescription dog food and it's hard for me to get an I am going home mix with you and I do have a couple of hands, but is there if I get in a bind? Is there anything else? The trick is there's probably some things that we can use short term retreat foods that would be appropriate for a dog on this food. But I'm going to say it's a little hard to just pick a food that we're going to be able to substitute because this is a therapeutic food. It is basically gearing the urine into a certain environment so we can hopefully prevent those problems. Now, there are some treats that we can do. Before I even get there, I was going to say, at least at my office, in many veterinary offices around the country, they may have the option to order online for these prescription foods and to have those shit to your home. Because it is very much only like ten miles from me and the problem is getting to.

"News director Laurie Brooks, and now, from the red barn studios, here are your hosts. How Abrams and Judy Francis. And if you were in studio today, you would see that doctor Debbie has brought in this cute little kid. Just a cute little black kitten. Everybody. Oh my goodness. Yes. Is adorable and she's not mine. I know you guys keep saying she's gonna be mine, but she's mine for now. So that's good enough. Why would be a foster failure with that little critter? You know, I have her for a spell. Just until she gets large enough old enough that she's healthy doesn't need a lot of veterinary care because if you're getting a pet from a veterinarian, you want to make sure they're good and healthy and I want to make sure everything's good to go. So we're just giving it a little extra time and TLC until she was that point. Does she have a name? Does he have to? You know what? I'm trying not to name her. My husband has named her moxie. But I keep reminding him that it but he's just so focused on this little one. So yeah, we may be in for trouble. And so this is a kitten for somebody else. Moxie is for somebody else, right? Yes. For somebody else, around the holidays, there's a kind of I know you're not supposed to get pets as gifts. But when it is solicited in someone says, will you get me one? So yes, so I'm taking that responsibility to make sure good personality well socialize and good health and all of the important stuff taking care of beforehand. Let me hold her. Don't know, don't. Don't give it to hell. Big mistake. Have you brushed your teeth yet? Have I brushed my teeth yet? No, doctor Debbie, because she's oh, the cat's teeth have you brushed the cat too? Yeah. You know what I haven't done that yet. So it's been a short while, but I'm gonna work on the grooming, so the brushing and the teeth brushing. We haven't quite gotten there yet. We've gotten used to some of the outdoor sounds, sound sites. Crates and traveling in the car. That's been a big thing where, you know, trying to socialize to and then just being around a lot of people. So just about everyone at my hospital can't get enough of this creature and so she's very accustomed to being handled, different people, different sounds, barking dogs is not a problem for her. Doorbells, things like that. So we're just kind of getting to be a well rounded kitten used to stuff. How old is she? 6 weeks right now. Wow. Yeah. And what age do you neuter a kitten? We usually wait till at least three months. So we've got some time. You know, she's still got to get vaccinations. She's got to have some different types of lab work done. We were already done some parasite testing in deworming, but she's too young. She's under the radar yet for a lot of the things like vaccination so far. Eating hard food or still a bottle baby? She is eating solids. So she's on dry and canned food. And she has got a little pot belly on her leg. And I don't think I showed you the best part. Let me see. It's her butt. Oh. Her butt? She has no tail. Oh, I didn't notice that. Yeah, she has no cheetah. She's born with no too. Oh, she is a bitch. Yes. Yeah. So a little special. So yeah, the joke is anyone from the veterinary world. We end up with animals missing body parts. So I kind of did this whole thing of do you mind if it has one eye? I'm missing a leg, and then I left out the tail thing because I kind of knew this one had no tail and I was interested in her. Well, how adorable. So halloween comes around every year and every year you hear the warning about pet safety on this night. Don't people learn you think. Well i in other experts will tell you yes and no so for those of you who need a gentle reminder and others who need a firm talking to. Here's my list of things to consider for halloween. Pet safety to begin with while halloween is about dressing up and candy for humans. It's the exact opposite for our pets. It's an uncomfortable horror show when the humans they observe in love turned into costumed goof-balls who certainly need a week or twelve of human behavior classes. Also if you're going to dress up your pets here's a few tips and ideas never force pet to wear a costume. More now fit for many pets. It's the equivalent of a human being being forced to wear a wet suit. It's uncomfortable makes them overheat and the embarrassment in this age of the internet may never fade. However if your pet will tolerate and outfit give them time to adjust to it put it on for short periods of time and let them adjust to wearing it and reinforce that it's not a permanent thing. Additionally consider alternatives to allow fits their pet paints pet nail polish and pet bullying. That are much less irritating injustice fun. The key to all of this is pat safety. Making sure that anything you're putting on or near your pet is safe for them next. Stop is the trick-or-treaters. If your neighbors only dressed up as postal workers and delivery drivers that would be upsetting enough for most pets and that ghouls goblins witches devil superheroes and much more and you can see the confusion that your pets. Have your dog in particular. Instinctually wants to protect its family. Consider giving your protector. The night off by putting them in a bedroom with the tv on or music playing also. The doorbell is like a starter's pistol to your pops. Well after the fifteenth doorbell or so your dog figures. Everyone is out to get you. Don't allow your access to the doorway area. Consider having a please knock signed or even greeting the trick-or-treaters outside next up is candy and food associated with halloween. Please keep your pets away from all candy as it can be severely dangerous for your pets. The same goes for late pumpkins. if they get too close they can knock it over or even burn themselves. And a glow stick looks like attempting new toy. Which if bitten or ingested can.

"Would be. It became a court case because she was found in a house abandoned so it became an abuse case case okay so she was in the shelter five and a half weeks while this case was going on and during which time she was hailing from on so sunday now is has people around her all the time i am you know with her. She goes with me everywhere. And but if you're not near her whatever she linked response what whatnot. How does she get the name sunday. I guess that's what they called her at the shelter. Okay so when we as the rescue got her. Some people want to change the name and my theory is that you know. She's going to be adopted out. Somebody else is going to change her name. Maybe but right. Now she's got five weeks or five and a half weeks of sunday being called sunday under her belt. That's enough chain now are sunday. Are you fostering her or did you adopt her. Because i know you're we're fostering her okay. I'm seeing you. But if she threw this before it had plenty of fosters who became auspice cases. And if she had to stay here forever. That would be fine with me. She's absolutely adorable. She's she is the show sunday sunday sunday. I'll have a go at your paper. Okay how do we have time for one more to do. Because we're talking about shelters. We all believe in pulling dogs from shelters cats. Whatever kind of animals and there is so many shelters in especially in the summertime experienced a horrific conditions are conditions because things like air conditioning. Maybe really old. But there's this shelter in kentucky in martin county the city is i knez or the and they've got some really bad news last week that their shelter is full of toxic mold in the walls in the ceiling everywhere and when you have mould like that it has got to be cleaned by like has by has met people because it can literally kill so this rescue that has the the license to run the shelter through the county is now responsible for paying to have cleaned up and all this stuff and they've got twenty dogs and forty seven cats that they've got to get out of there so and then on top of all of that the expensive that every single animal before it leaves has to be vetted because the black mold can cause neurological issue humans and for animals. So you have to know the health of the animal before it is put into foster or adopted so if anyone out there if you know anyone in says or martin county kentucky we hope you'll let them know there's big problem at their local shelter or maybe you can help them out will put their information on our web page. Let's hit the phones. We have an on the phone. Diane hi i'm fine. Thank you today. i'm in clovis california near fresno lovely fresno right. What can we do for you. I have a question and it's possibly if dogs the allergic to black mission figs and i'll be real brief. I have a little miniature rat. Terrier weighs about ten pounds two and a half years old very very active last monday. We not or two weeks ago monday. We notice she was dragging her back leg a little bit by stay. She couldn't stand up. We had to put a sling under her back legs. She was just bragging them took her to the vet. They did that test where they pinched her. Legs all the way up to the middle of the back. There was no flinching. She was like completely paralyzed for two days. I thought it was going to have to put her down. The doctor tried dosa d. m. s. o. Along with hit be given. Her predecessor was on a thursday by friday. She was able to stand on her legs a little bit by saturday. She was walking a little wobbly by sunday. She was running and chasing the dog along. The fans could sarah possibility because a year ago we almost lost her and it was. It's exactly a year ago and they never could find out what was wrong with her then but she just didn't eat. She was listless and dehydrated and everything concerned about the figs being possible. Cause of that possibly or else could she have had the vet said he took x rays. There was nothing that jumped out at him but possibly a ruptured disc or A dislocated discs but to recover that quickly possibly. Yeah and when we talk about a disc problems in dogs You know it's a spongy little cushion between the bones right below the spinal cord so if one of those Very suddenly impacts spinal cord Causes a lot of pain can lead to sudden paralysis. Some pets can respond very quickly and very favorably to steroids. Such as prednisone or decks and methods. So that's possible. And there are some more obscure things that can cause me be a temporary paralysis. If with that therapy that he described she improved. I would actually have some faith. Perhaps that we may have a bad back and you know something to watch for in the future because a lot of pets can go on to have future episodes with their back whether or not that year prior that was related to that. I don't know Some pets early back problems will be uncomfortable. They just don't act themselves may be grumpy even and not necessarily show signs of paralysis. So i can make a case that perhaps Generally i can tell you. Figs are pretty Harmless dogs unless they eat lots of them. And then.

Sixty two percent of the pet parents who were interviewed for it say they are most concerned about nutritional benefits though when they buy dog food. Fifty five percents at a healthy diet for their dog is of the highest importance to them but sadly eight the experts found. We don't always consider the health benefits of our own human food. Overall health was the most important factor for those in charge of feeding therefore legged friends closely to Brand and then cost coming in second and third however when we shop for ourselves flavor gets the most consideration just a third of us consider the nutritional benefits of food were adding to our shopping carts for our own consumption and over a third of dog.
