"Here. The headlines a man tied to one of the guns used in a deadly kidnapping in Mexico earlier this month will stay in federal custody following his arrest Roberto Moreno waved his right to a detention hearing yesterday, they were going to appearance before a federal judge in Brownsville, Texas. Appears county sheriff deputy today involved in a shooting with a man who was allegedly holding a grenade. The deputy not hurt and the man is dead, it happened near Franklin Pierce high school and a nearby middle school. The election is more than a year away, but now's the time to start thinking about one big race in Washington state. There's more from northwest news radios Jeff Pogba. 2023 is an off year in politics, but that doesn't mean we're not thinking about the next election. So with that in mind, it's time for the way too early much too soon. Look at the governor's race. One candidate has already said he will not be running that being King County executive Dow Constantine, but all eyes remain on attorney general bob Ferguson. To break all of this down, I'm joined by Paul query of the Washington observer. And Paul, we're already seeing some jockeying for position. Yeah, and that's because there's some expectation that governor Jay inslee is not going to run for a fourth term. No Washington governor has ever done that. If that's true, then this could kick off pretty soon. I mean, the last time the governor's office changed hands, governor Gregoire announced in 2011. And I think June of 2011 that she wasn't going to run and that's the analogous date is just a couple of months off now. Obviously that was a very, very different climate. She was dealing with the Great Recession at that time and obviously that had a lot to do with the 2012 campaign there. This time around you have someone who's been elected now three times in Jay inslee and you really don't have any legitimate Republicans stepping forward as of yet whereas in 2012 you had rob McKenna and since then the Republicans really have had nothing more than sacrificial lambs. Yeah, that's definitely true. And it's looking like that's what we're going to see in the next election as well. There was a poll in this race that was released about a week and a half ago, I guess. It tested pierce county executive Bruce dammeier, who's sort of the most high profile Republican officeholder at this point. And he told Jim bruner at the Seattle times the day after that poll was released. That he wasn't going to run. And that really leaves the Republicans with almost nobody at this point. Certainly no candidate of rob McKenna's stature from 2012. If you look at the last two election cycles, governor inslee had pretty much a cakewalk in 2020. He had Lauren culp. And we all know the history of his struggles with the campaign and claims of ballot fraud. Before that, you had Bill Bryant, a guy who was commissioner for the port of Seattle, who had no name recognition in the city of Seattle, let alone the rest of the state, and there's really not a deep bench for Republicans in this state as far as statewide office, the last person who really might have had a shot would have been Kim Wyman, I think. Yeah, and Kim Wyman sort of moved on to join the Biden administration in a kind of election security role in the Department of Homeland Security. So I don't think that you'll see her back in Washington state politics and in this realm. And I think that whoever would run for governor here would really face a kind of Trump conundrum. That candidate would have to either embrace Donald Trump or reject him, and if you reject Donald Trump, then you lose his base of support, which makes it difficult to get through the primary. And if you embrace him, then you alienate, not just moderate Republicans who have moved away from Trump, but also the sort of moderate Democrats that you'd really need to appeal to to flip the governor's mansion in Washington. So I guess my my first question here is how corrosive do you feel like you have said that the elections were were fair that the votes were counted correctly. How corrosive do you think that this these claims are in the long term that the elections were somehow stolen or that there was massive election fraud in the United States? Oh, extremely corrosive, and it has been the thing I've been most worried about since 2016. Certainly we've seen it manifested the federal level and here in our state, and it's going to take a lot to rebuild the confidence of those voters. Um Cuba Secretary. Let me ask you this. How tough is it for your Republican? And right now there's you and other rip Republican secretary of states. Say officials election officials across the country that have been called so many things considering that you you have said that this election was fair and was not stolen. How has this been tough for you? Because it's almost as if you are at odds fighting against other Republicans. Absolutely, That's that's what it's been the whole year, and it's certainly increased dramatically after Election Day. I think the day after the election, Lauren Culp was immediately You know, making false and baseless claims about the election and how it was conducted and continued right up through the lawsuit that he dismissed on on Friday. So it's been really hard. My state election director is in an undisclosed location with her family because they're worried about their physical and personal safety. Um, it's It's a scary time and people are emotional and their illogical and they're they're not rational. So, but the cold hard truth is the election officials in the state of Washington did a remarkable job conducting a fair and accurate election that was accessible and secure. And we are, you know, poised to be able to defend it and explain to people and answer questions at any time. Secretary of State woman. How do you This is an odd question to ask because I think you would say that that Washington State did did a good job of figuring out mail in ballots in all of many things that the states had toe learn how to do this year. We've been doing it for a while, and I think that you would argue like a lot of people would that the system is Relatively safe, if not exceptionally safe, But use now you're in the position of having to build trust on something that really doesn't need any. Maybe you would say, may doesn't need any altering. I mean, how do you build back a trust that kind of existed prior to all of this without making any major policy change in some fashion if you get my question I do Well, I think the most important thing we can do is first and foremost refute the lies in the misinformation and disinformation that's been shared and put out as if factual. You know, from from claims that the Dominion voting system is, you know, controlled by a foreign government, Tonto tick tick claims that we have dead people who voted in Washington State. They're all patently false. And we have the information and we can show the security measures that are in place to prevent that from happening and detected if if we have people who vote on behalf of deceased people, Um and I think that's where it's gotta start is his election officials across the state, including myself need to be sharing with their local communities. What's actually happened in our state and the fact That you know, we're recognized nationally as one of the best states in the country for accessibility and security, and just because people make claims that that's not true doesn't make them real or accurate. I just assumed that there have been threats in the past prior to this election right here. I want to go back to something that you just said a second ago, talking about one of your election officials that are in hiding. Can you help us understand why the threat was so much so that they had to go in tow hiding? Well, it we've you believe it was. It's a foreign government that has done this. But there was a website that came out about a month and a half ago that targeted election officials across the country from vendors, two secretaries of state and state election directors. And it called for their assassination. It had pictures of them on this website with sniper's crosshairs on their faces and pictures of their homes with their home addresses and information about the wrongs that this site, you know, claimed that they had done And the problem is, you know, I do believe it Zen Iranian website. The problem is is that people here have fallen prey to this propaganda into this misinformation and believe it and the scary thing is is that it's just got to take one person that you motivate that says, Yeah, we got to go out and kill election officials. And so that's that's what's really, you know, made it happen, and she and her family have done that. My family is taking more precautions. I was added to the list a couple of weeks ago. Um they've toned it down, but it's still out there and and also it's it's unnerve Ng. And No, I've never seen this happen before. In my 28 years of doing elections. Explain how scared you've been during this time you personally Um, you know, you're gonna make me g. You're gonna make me get emotional on air, and that's never good. Um, you know, it's It's frustrating because I go between fear and anger. I get mad because I don't want to be afraid. Um, you know we had, but it's It's a real thing. You know you, um you like to believe in the goodness of people. But we've seen, you know Jenny Durkin's home protesters out in front of it and being very angry, and we saw what mob rule can do different group and I don't want to compare the two groups because they're very different, but You know what happened with the You know people in Washington, D C and how unacceptable that was, Um, that's the scary part is what happens if you get Ah, Group of people who believe that you know, Kim Wyman stole the election. Kim Wyman is part of the deep state. I mean, some of the things I've read about myself online or unnerve ng, But I also know they're not true. So you know, you just have to have confidence in law enforcement, which I do. I love our FBI partners are Department of Homeland Security Partners, Our own state patrol in Washington National Guard. I listened to them and I follow their directives. I've had to get rid of my two personalized plates. I had a law enforcement memorial plate that I got rid of the summer. I've had that since the Lakewood shooting, and I have always had vote. The word vote as my personal plate for 20 years and I had to get rid of that last week..

Jeff Pooja look come on news Well, analysts have now had a closer look at President elect Joe Biden's unveiled $1.9 Trillion coronavirus plan bankrate dot com senior economic analyst Mark Hamrick with that closer look and talked about it with Cuomo's time I learned last evening, the Rice, the president elect said that the Asian faces this crisis of deep human suffering. Did he say anything that made you feel like There's a way out of that crisis. Well, I think the question is how much of a whole do we dig? Before we get to the end of this tunnel that has the light at the end of it, and And you know, the whole was still pretty deep. We've been getting it seriously economic reports, including a miserable December retail sales reading this morning, Tom, I think you know, a lot of things sort of are thrown out there. I think as potential points of negotiation, not all this would be passed. I don't think On Remember? Obviously, Biden as vice president under Obama's senator for many years, knows very well how the legislative process works. He has a good professional or political relationship of Mitch McConnell, who's still the Republican leader of the Senate. I think the first thing people gravitate toward is the additional payments of $1400 of stimulus payments that would go on top of the 600 by virtue of what the president signed into law the end of December there some controversial parts in there like raising the federal minimum wage to $15. But I again I think some of those air points of negotiation. As you mentioned the American public latching onto that $1400 In addition to the two to make it about $2000 total, that's still in the process. How much affect how much impact? How much good would that do? I think it doesn't want a good There is an argument to be made that it's highly inefficient because essentially, everybody with an income of $75,000 or less would be getting it. And you know, $75,000 goes a lot farther in my hometown back in the day of in southeast Kansas, when it does here in Washington, D C or where. You are Tom. But let's put it this way. Half of households have lost income during this downturn. As you know, we had more than 18 million on some form of unemployment insurance and the report we got this week. On DSA. Many people were financially fragile coming into this and that fragility has turned into a crisis of late, so it'll help people in need of help. For those who don't quote unquote need to help it will help the broader economy.
