The Case Of Chad And Lori Daybell
"Dick I feel like we've kind of been just living this case the last several days there's so much that we had to delve into. So let's just start with an overview of the timeline going back to the beginning because it's very complicated and as much for me as for the listeners a little review and a little in-depth investigation into these things would be helpful both helpful the me. We did last week's first part of this and I'm just at the time you do it do the recording. It sounds reasonable. Then as I think back about it, I'm trying to say what happened when who did what? So. This'll be very helpful. It's a crazy thing and of course, with the tragic ending, which is horrible. So. Let's go back to Chad Day Bell. He married his first wife Tammy in nineteen ninety and they had five children together over the years in Nineteen ninety-two Laurie got married for the first time at age eighteen and this marriage only lasted a very short time under a year from what I've heard. Then she remarried in nineteen ninety five and that's when she gave birth to her son Colby in nineteen, ninety six. Again, she got divorced then in two, thousand one, she married Joseph Ruin and Laurie and Joe had their daughter Kylie together in two thousand and two, and just a little bit of a word about Tyler's childhood. We we know that she was used as a pawn by Laurie and her divorce custody filings against Joe Ryan. But there's also some evidence fairly convincing evidence that Laurie mains have had Munchausen by proxy pilot who's in and out of the hospital many times, and she even had exploratory surgery to quote figure out what was wrong unquote and that's something that just. Really isn done nowadays, right? No, it isn't that if we go back a few years that was something I mean if if you have parent who keeps bringing a child into the office bureau for various complaints and you have run tests and nothing ever shows up, you might have considered doing an exploratory bit of surgery as probably a what's called a lap me. Where they look inside the the belly at the F. Domino contents and maybe take biopsies just to see if there was something that they had missed Leah from my experience on a pediatric surgical floor though they only do that when they're like at the end of their rope, this is after days of observing taking the kid off of a regular diet doing. IV fluids run, they do a lot of things I and the munch just love to hang out in the room for days and get the attention. So this is very classic Munchausen by proxy behavior who certainly is yet it really is and no illness was ever determined, which is significant I think road even with the surgery. Yes. So so there you go. Exactly. Nine, two, thousand when Tyler was about six, her therapist raised concerns about the stress Tyler was going through with her health issues and the custody issues. Tally, did say to the therapist that she did enjoy visits with her father. There were documented concerns about Laurie being dishonest on Tyler's intake forms. One of these things whereas where Lori said, the tally had pancreatitis. The custody documents I was able to peruse showed that Kylie did say she enjoyed visits with her father but then she told the therapist that she was frightened to stay overnight because her father molested her now she used the word molested and when her mom came into the room with her and the therapist apparently tie looked at Lori and said I, told her. So it just really I'm not convinced that Joe sexually abused tightly and I'll always believe someone until I have reason not to especially a child but there were some classic signs of the Mother Coaching her. So in two thousand, four, Laurean Joe were divorced and Laurie remarried Charles Valo in two, thousand six. Now for those of you who are counting Charles's husband number four. Yes, and in two thousand, twelve, a little boy named Joshua. Jackson was born he's he's the biological child of Charles Valez nephew his grandparents cared for jj until they made the decision along with Lori and. Charles that Lori Charles would adopt and raise JJ, and this was back in two thousand fourteen. Laurie already had colby and entirely. So the grandparents K. and Larry Woodcock were really thinking that they might have a better home there because there'd be other kids. It's kind of their little bit younger than Larry and K. so laurie who they thought was just a wonderful mom. At, the time agreed to adopt the little boy with Charles and then Laurie Charles entirely moved to Hawaii along with JJ services in two thousand fourteen when the adoption went through the options gone through and we've Kurt the family now lorries. Oldest son is what out of the house at this point because he's like eighteen nineteen, he didn't move to Hawaii with them now. He didn't in two thousand fifteen back to Chad, Tammy and the family moved to Idaho from Utah Right, in two years later, the veil of family moved back to Arizona, from Hawaii then on April third two, thousand, eighteen lorries, ex husband, her third husband Joseph Ryan was found dead in his home Laurie was notified as she was still listed as his next of kin. Didn't notify Joe's sister Anne who by all accounts she was very close to Anne was still a part of tiles life, your birth Maurice to ruin agenda Yes. I know we've talked about this a little bit in part one, but you did get a chance to review the autopsy. They were a few things that stuck out to us like the fact that the height was off and they call them a heavyset guy which he really wasn't. No. But remember he was in his apartment for at least a week decomposing before anyone found was a neighbor who found him that's correct. Yes and we don't have the entire autopsy but the cause of death was per tiriac sclerotic heart disease, which means that you're coronary arteries getting clogged up, which isn't really crazy for a fifty nine year old man to die of in general but

"I've been approached about the student teacher story before by people who always seem to have this moralistic agenda to tell this cautionary tale of young people who are in over their heads or taken advantage of with too much freedom and sex and drugs, and rock and roll. And I definitely want to be clear with you that I actually believe that artistic exploration and that. Freedom is worth a certain amount of existential risk and I'd rather live next door to junkies than millionaires any day. And I'm endlessly grateful. That we came of age in a place time like that. Tightening your belt? How to decide which streaming TV service to cancel.
"With me, senior editor Shelby Brown who was a nice run down to the various streaming services out there, and why should drop each one of them? Thanks for joining me shelby. Thanks for having me again so before we get into the different services We can get the details in a bit Do you have any general suggestions for how you would approach things when you know balancing your budget with all these various streaming services because? For a lot of people, there are different shows that we like. Those shows are found on different services. So there's no. There's no one size fits all options. So, what would you suggest a folks? Generally looking at this landscape. I. Definitely examined why you want that service Aaron. What's appealing to you about that service Lake I had to stop myself from immediately subscribing to HBO. Max Number One just because of the giant explosion of publicity around it when it first came out and kind of the the foam. Oh the fear of missing out I think that can be a big drought services. Especially the new wines I can imagine. That's GONNA. Be when peacock comes out. They'll be a huge drama that 'cause It's new and attractive, but with HBO Max I wanted to subscribe to it. Because, I immediately fell in love with their classic films collection, but I have to ask myself if that's all that I am going to watch, there is always stat worth my money so i. think that that's a question that you should ask yourself before you subscribe to something Dutch. I think that's a that's a good concept to keep in. Mind is considering there are only so many hours in the day and so much time we have to watch stuff so even if in principle it's something you WanNa. have access to your right. It may not be something you'd necessarily need. so let's let's. Let's run through the different service. Let's start with the granddaddy of the mall in the one that is basically ubiquitous, and that's net flicks. It almost is it conceivable to drop athletes. Are there reasons why you'd WanNa? Drop this service on. I think that Netflix's kind've where we started with that. You know binging idea, and whether actively watching it or it's just on for background noise of course there are Netflix's originals which typically Garner a lot of buzz on social media like tiger king came out recently so mostly I think if you're not interested in staying on top of new shows, Netflix's might not be for you or watching the old classics like the Office or Parks and recreation or win. Friends was on there before Hbo Max. And, some of those shows have disappeared from Netflix so that you Kinda lose access to some of that old library. Right All right well, what about Disney plus? As simple as it sounds. I think you should access me, plus you're not into Disney or marvel. Disney plus is a mistrial Jake ride with the vaulted films and the Disney channel original movies from the late nineties early two thousands, and the Buzzword, the original shows Lake Amanda Laurean and the Star Wars films again the marvel films, but again if you're not a fan of the Disney or the marble films, you might not want to invest Disney plus. That's the thing. There could be something he said about subscribing to the services. Timed with shows. You love right like what we know. The mental Lawrence coming back with. Subscribe to it for Laurie Withdraw Fortunately for one of the for these services, there are like cancellation fees. It's not as sticky as it used to be with cable service. You can hop on hop off and that's that that's a good benefit. You can sort of time out if you really want to be strategic about it. These different services right and we've seen those trends win. Game of thrones was on with with HBO. We would see the spike in the viewership. Go up right before the season started, and then we would see plummet after this season would go off so. That and as transition HBO match what? Why would you WANNA keep. Why would you WANNA trump? Hbo Max Hbo Max Really came out swinging at lines with a huge catalog. Of TV shows movies. Its price is on the higher side though compared to other services. It's fifteen dollars a month. so I win necessarily invest in Matt if you're looking for more budget, friendly option an. An Hbo Max Might Not Be the one that you want to subscribe to. Because you can't stream HDR, yet or on Roku or Amazon devices, but it's still new, so that could change in a couple of months or next year. The Amazon Prime Video Amazon. Prime video is kind of a two for one because you get the discount with ecommerce site as well. The platform more centered around movies that you can rent by watch for free but the service definitely puts a focus on its original shows like flea, bad marvelous Mazel and modern love, so if you're more fan of mainstream TV shows, you might WanNa drop trends at you. This is like the one that is kind of default to your point. Right like I am a prime member because I did the shipping services and the videos Kevin Extra. About who is probably one of the more pure play, TB streaming services out there I. who if you don't care about keeping up with? The current mainstream shows one of my favorite parts about the service is. how quickly uploads new episodes after the air on cable, but you can also get the live TV plan for fifty five dollars a month that acts like a capable replacement to watch shows in real time. A downside to that for example, if you wanted to catch up on all the seasons of Grey's anatomy, only season sixteen available on Hulu whereas all the seasons are available on Netflix, so that's kind of a catch, and then lastly apple. TV Plus Apple TV plus has a lot of original shows that were a significant drought of the service like the morning show and. You can like all your streaming services to your apple TV apple TV plus doesn't have a library of license chosen movies. It all so doesn't always release full seasons of shows at one. So, J, if none of the new shows clear interest after the fruit trial. Don't keep it. I subscribed to TV plus for the free trial and watched the servant. I thought it was really good. I'm probably will pick it back up when a second season comes out, so that's always option.

"Quick quick quick quick quick this show we gotta get that interest in command off camera camera show business into the Mike S. Areas. That people do know the awful. No no no. No the men. Loin doesn't look like Jingle Fat. Yes no mental. Laurean ISN'T OKAY. Because he only here's half the conversation. I wasn't saying that the Mandal Laurean was but will set. I'm taking the Mandal Laurean. The series the mental orient up this idea that basically mental orients look alike to tonight men Lawrence though it's entirely possible it's entirely possible. That Bobo Fat who is a BA? Bounty Hunter Essentially had another man that was like sidekick and said you know you can go do 'cause maybe he didn't want to do all the party soft. This guy wanted to be the glad hand or wanted to shake hands Thursday to do the whole do whole thing hanging out at Jarvis Palace. Say Okay you hang out jobless you waiting are you Hang Jab palace you go. You go do that aspect. I'M GONNA go to all the honey. Make all the money and that we were both happy. And that's what I was trying to say. And what the man Lawrence showed us is even though there's dozens of mandatory on that planet. They'll call are manned Laurean Laurean 'cause no one realizes that all.

"His man because he knew his men were going to try and shoot the mandatory. So I do feel that he shot them because he's like change of plans you know. Then he still takes him in to to him so everything. He told him was still technically true. Yours again. Coast Guards you know. Yeah the ordinances see only four guards. You know so. I do get the feeling like you know there was a plan. And he's changing the plan because he knows that they're that he can't he can't kill you it'll either it'll it'll needs to live and You know when they go in and they you know and I think also that was a study of maybe he was hoping men luring might have come alone thinking Hamid Laurean. He can have as many as you want. I'm going to get out of this. Okay my jacker armor and all that kind of stuff you know so when he does have back up. I think that that becomes problematic. You know it's entirely possible. He was expecting the dragons to come. And maybe felt that you know if we had just been the man. Laurean maybe dragons taking care of the situation. Yeah well he well. He was fighting the dragons. They could have gotten gap on him. But I think that because there was so many people in so many other targets that it was harder it worked it out but anyway he they do agree they go in and you realize then that of course are big bad What when Hertzog Actually isn't bad. That is a bigger bigger bed as you haven't any Stoudt.

"These. I know just you watch a long watch way too much so just a few. It's hard to not. I mentioned the things I've watched recently but there are so many good things he can say that for next time. So this is just the twenty nineteen we're keeping it to this year Well the best ones are absolutely the watchmen. If you haven't seen the watchman yes watch the one of the best things I've ever watched I loved it the the Drag imprint season to season three so is three right season three so that was really good. Mike couldn't not just immediately watch that. Mrs Mazel Season Two three again so good. I mean I've watched I think all the things I actually came to this point this week while lakes. What else is there to watch? There's nothing else to watch. You've come and I told you guys to watch all the time they'll get those films here you do. I make sure that you do before I tell you to get them You know but that's those are out there. Those ones allergists for mentioned because they're so good. I have not watched all of those but I will concur that dragon prints and watchmen are excellent. I only have two. Besides those on my list is the dark crystal age of resistance. I love that series so much and then the man Laurean Laurean good. I cannot wait for season two. Yeah Command Lawrence on mind. Do you don't also throwing their is lost in space season one and two two just came out and so good if you want a film that's like also family friendly. It's good to watch with the kids like there's nothing inappropriate in it so good so again I have not finished it. Give any other cinematic ideal. So the one was the end Laurean and then also glow glow came out with their third season this year. So good also very good and they're having the fourth and final season next year. It's going to be really good. I really yeah last season and then it's a Korean film that's on Netflix. It's called hit and run squad. I've told Brad to watch it fifty times now but to sixteen. Hopefully we'll do it. Yes you have to read it but it's good hit and run squad. I liked it. It's like the I would think it's the Korean version of like a better fast and furious. Better Vasan furious. Nice all right. Because they're selling a crime about the fastness car also hitting and running. I get it now I get hit and run squad is like the police department that they're following going. God I but Anyway Watch it. I watched it on my flight over here so I shall watch so. I think that wraps up another year year in review for the cinema guys are what third one word year interview. How long have we been doing this together? We started in two thousand sixteen. I I think you came at the end of two thousand sixteen or beginning of two thousand seventeen. I can't believe I think it was the end of the year review with you guys. How did you first get on on? I don't remember you know that you like movies and we were like. Hey come on. It needed a person and then and then we we needed a guess. I you guys to go see resident evil. You did go see resident evil the first episode and you were lying well. Maybe I don't WanNa do this thing. With U S S.. I do remember thinking I sound terrible. That's absolutely terrible. Why did I do this? I remember that now right still to this stay. You don't look at the cafe and little. Did we know history was made. I'm glad that I'm here you far away. But you're here. Thank you for listening thing to another year in review of the guys and we will be back in a couple of weeks with bad boys for life. I will not be here. I'll be in Japan. She you will be enjoying Japan at Disneyworld. Well you'll be cutting Sheila but we will have a right languages time. We will have a special special guests for that episode so just for that week so tune in for bad boys for life but until next time we'll see you at the movies breath We've had some awesome. No I did back in you. Didn't you didn't signal no either..
The Mandalorian Deep Dive
"Let's take a look at I. Guess the mandatory series win. You got done watching it. I guess. How overall satisfied were you with it up and down for you like this episode was good? But this episode is kind of a Dud. What what was your first impression as a whole I think I'd dug the whole the whole series whole a few more times? I really dug it from beginning to end when it was down it was still great. Its lowest points were still pretty high points. Okay overall. I really dug it but I also have like a huge love of Westerns and Samurai movies. And this kind of felt like it kind of felt like a way for star wars to play in a new sandbox. It felt very reminiscent of the original trilogy while also managing to kind of have its identity. Yes okay segues is into a good point. I noticed right away on the series the simple things like the fades from scene to scene. Where the same little you'll circular fades aides or sideswipe fades from? Yeah from you hope. You cannot do that when I graduated from film school. One of one of the things they told us in in film school is don't ever do that. It looks it looks amateur. It looks bad. Really for whatever reason star wars can do it and the reason they the reason they can do it is because they just kind of did it at a time when they were defining what Star Wars. This is so when episode four came out or Star Wars or the original movie nineteen seventy seven when that came out already visually. It was so distinct and so oh very specifically star wars that it can incorporate silly things like a like a cross dissolve across fade or a circle Michael Fade or whatever you wanNA call them It can do that because it is star wars and and if you saw that if you went to go watch the avengers and and you see that really slow white from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen to transition. It would look very out of place in Lynn very artificial because because that's not part of cinema language but it is a part of Star Wars language and incorporating that into the man. delorean was something. I've thought was incredibly smart. Yes you actually see that in things like Djeddai Fallen Order And a lot of video games as well. Okay we'll incorporate that in the cut scenes it just it's A. It's an easy visual indicator that this is star wars I love that when I saw that on the very episode. That was one of the simple simple fan services that the what other fans services or things did you see that Cairo. I the main thing. The first first thing I saw for sure was was the rifle and everybody talks about the right okay but it deserves to be talked about talking about man. Does the knife owned the mandatory rifle. Yeah it's It's it's kind of like a long rifle with a tuning fork. Yes that was Boba Fett rifle in the holiday special which is the infamous holiday special which I've seen and it is as bad as everybody says and it's not like it's not like a challenge to go watch it do do not watch it. Don't and watch it. It's not it's not even worth laughing at. It's it's so hard to watch but In the BLU ray release of the Star Wars The star awards box set episodes one through six on the bonus disc. There's actually an Easter egg on their. That has the entire animated segment from the holiday special. Yes so you can actually see that and it's really cool but in that segment it's very much like a Ralph Bakshi inspired character design. It's really Kinda cool but you do see Z.. BOBA FETT teaming up with Luke at first and then he betrays him but he's got this weird rifle that should never ever work and everybody thought it was a cool looking rifle. I never thought we'd seen it and live action. Let alone we would disintegrate people. Yes that was another little throwback to empire pyre when vader tells Boba Fett notice integration. Yes because he had that rifle and rifle disintegrates. Yes it does look a little bulky on him but they still make it work. It works completely nothing about again. That goes back to what I was saying before about the visual language of star wars and again in the empire strikes rex back in the original theatrical cut. There's a shot on cloud city of a guy running through running through cloud city as it's being attacked by the empire but he's holding. What's supposed to look like a futuristic device but even in the eighties? Everybody was like that is an ice cream maker. Awesome husband was just running with an ice cream maker but they brought that back And so the the client played by Verna Herzog. He actually carrying all of his best car in one of those ice cream. Oh and so. That is another throwback that I really so when he opens up the best guard the open up that containers just the ice cream maker and it's the same kind of ice cream maker that that that extra was carrying awesome and it's Super Fund. It has no bearing on anything. If you didn't know that it's it doesn't take away or add anything to it except for the factory like I know that the super fans hansel catch it. Sure the casual fan okay. Whatever you know they won't even notice it but still get to enjoy it absolutely? Yeah and the show is filled with stuff like that. There is an episode where the episode with Bill Burr where they go to like a heist episode. Yes super the prison ship. Yeah there is one on living person on that ship. That person was played by Matt. Land Her who was the voice of anecdotes skywalker in the clone wars. Yeah and a whole bunch of other stuff but it's cool to have that clancy brown played a de Veroni wasn't Ronin. He was different. He was a different species. He was the red guy the horn. Yeah but The Big Guy. Yeah but that was clancy Brown. who was the voice of sabotage press and a bunch of other true in the rebels? Yeah and and Star Wars rebels he was sabotage press. It was really cool to see people from the animation side of things being incorporated into the live action. which is the kinds of stuff? I want to see moving forward with specific characters. Sure On the inverse of that you know we're we're getting to see live action or we're getting see animation people in live action and on the mandatory and then also in Rizal Skywalker. We got sorry guys. I'm talking about it. We got to hear. Canaan from rebels was one of the voices. You heard you heard Soka. You heard every you know people who were doing voices specifically for the cartoons in for for super fans you know which if I may indulge myself they already introduced you as a superfan. Oh good good a resident expert. Sorry whatever is just whatever cooler than I actually am but it was really fun to be able to to see those things. And if let's say I'm talking to you Leigh and you have no idea who Canaan is and we see rise skywalker you're thinking it's super cool because you're seeing this really cool scene. I think it's super cool because I'm seeing is really cool scene and also Kanaan's yeah and so it's just kind of another little the thing and and the reason I bring rays of Skywalker with this is because it's all happening right now right now You know we can. We can talk about this next year when you know when I owned the box set of the man delorean and I own the skywalker. Saga and I can watch those at the same time and and it doesn't necessarily have the same effect because we can watch it whenever this is something unique to December of two thousand nineteen this is as we're experiencing the lore. which again there are some of us like like you and I who will watch the cartoons and the TV shows and read the books and read the comments but there are are some people who only will take the movies or now the TV shows as that's all they know about wars and that's totally cool but at this point you know we saw in the Manda Laurean the child the baby iota used the force to heal somebody and a week later? We're watching the rise of skywalker skywalker. And we're seeing those same force. Power is being used and just from a serial point of view for storytelling. I I'm completely fascinated by. I'm really really excited that I can experience it this way and nobody else was going to experience it this way in now even now. We're we're staring at the New Year here in the next couple of days. People aren't going to be able to experience it that way anymore. Because it's already happened past and it's kind of a lightning in a bottle

Star Wars: The correct order to watch all the movies and shows
"When it comes to the Star Wars World I am a bit of a purist. I like to watch I like to marathon anything but when I watched the star shows and movies I like to watch everything being in the order that they were actually released. I feel like that's the way that the story unfolded for us. The world and that that's the right way to experience experience the story so that being said I usually will start with episode four and then do four five six one two three and so on But for those of you who are interested in experiencing the star wars world in in the actual time line on how everything fits together. I have worked out the order for you And so we're going to go through that right now. So if you're interested in watching things chronologically how they happened in the Star Wars universe. You're going to want to start with with episode. One Phantom menace. That is of course the origin story of Incan Skywalker next. You're going to want to go with episode to attack of the clones. And then you're going to want to break from the movies and been the clone. Wars animated made it series I believe that there's five seasons of it. It's a really great show. Well animated get you a lot more information about the storm troopers burgers and all of the Cologne related stuff Once you're done with the clone wars animated series. You're going to want to pick up with episode three revenge of this when you're done with that you're GonNa go into a star wars story and see that origin story of Consolo. Not Everybody liked Selo. I personally did. I thought it was really funny. And probably the best that they could have done with the Han Solo origin. Origin Story And we also get to find out why his name is Hans Solo so that Super Bowl once you're finished with Solo you're going to watch rogue one a star wars story. That was one of my favorite little side stories of the Star Wars Universe. By the way I really like how I really like how it ended. I thought it was perfect. So once you're done with that you're going to jump into the original movies and watch episode four a new hope hope episode five Empire Strikes Back and episode. Six return of the Jedi. Once you wrap up with return of the Jedi that's when the man delorean Laurean. TV show story starts and so feel free to jump in and watch that again when you're done with Manda Laurean you're gonNA pick up with the third trilogy in the trilogy of trilogies episode seven. The Force Awakens. You'll follow that up with episode eight the last Jedi and of course it just hit theatres this last weekend episode nine rise of the Skywalker. I was fortunate enough to get to go in sea rise skywalker this weekend. I absolutely loved it. It is jam packed knocked with information. It's been a day since I've seen it and I'm still playing back through it in my head I'm probably going to have to go and see it again So I highly recommend and that you go and see that but definitely take the time to go on and watch all of the other movies and shows I so that you're all set up in caught up in that Star Wars universe Before you get to see how the story resolves itself

"Favreau with this character so I've been waiting my entire life since I was like six seven when I found that toy to see Amanda Laurean oriented and a bound hundred team up and Fight Bang so when I saw this trailer and I saw him in the episode and I saw them teaming up and fighting I was like this is what I wanted and all your call dies. Yeah and I was like Damn No. I think that's it was shot in the fucking head head like the first thing he says it missed all my circuitry so I'll be fine. And where does he shoot him. Right in the middle of all the circuitry so I enlist by some miracle. And here's the thing I wouldn't want him brought back twelve. We'll be always there's more it be cool if they had twelve and it was like my zip code a serial brother or psych again. But he's like Sillier So for me that was just because I don't want him brought back by some miracle. Like Oh Weezer at Ray. We saved my. I wanted to be consequences the show. That's why I'm watching it So so for me. I was just a little bummed because I was look so. And it's my own fault for so hyped right I just thought they did it. So well L. also like that. I can't stop talking about that scene. And how how happy I was and they knew it. They showed him doing that. Like twirling thing like six times bowl times so for me. That's my biggest qualm is like. I really wish he had stuck around. took away your toys. Yeah they took like I would love some scenes with all three of them like nick. Nolte the DRE and jealous I would say this. They shouldn't have injuries men that season. Yeah because the thing is the only the reason that scene works is a bounty. Hunter has a bounty hunter. Yeah to make a choice to save for sure. Whatever it had to be? That's fine. I was just. That's so your toy own own expectations I put onto it. It's no fault of theirs. Yes like you said there was a reason for it like I mean. That's there's no impact in that in the episode unless someone dies there 'cause he makes the decision to save one life over another divine purpose and then we probably would've murderous choice if it was all three of them. We probably wouldn't have gotten another. One of my favorite parts is when he shoots his flame thrower at the Joe. Yes what about this. What did you say what about this and they all dodgers like just totally chill about it has trying to hit them? But the characterised not like like fully level headed. He's got a little bit of a temper. And I kinda dig only when it comes as to his shit restroom. I have the same thing if someone came in and destroyed my took all the things for my Royat. They stole if they stole the things for my room and then tried to sell it back to me. I'd be like Oh those are my things you piece of Shit John was. You should go to Davis happens a lot of times so I'd say that was my only qualm..
Disney Plus officially arrives, with big numbers to boot
"Kim Masters and this is the Hollywood breakdown. Joining me is not Melanie of the Hollywood reporter order and Disney plus has finally been revealed to the world It did not go completely smoothly but in terms of numbers it went. Well yeah they had some glitches at launch launch and they were apologetic and they attributed it to the overwhelming demand. There was for seeing that demand for the hyping thing you know. They've been promoting this every single Disney outlet for six months now but the numbers as they came in. They said that they had ten million sign ups after the first day. And that's accumulating everything that has been presold up until now and it's also accumulating the free sign ups that you get via verizon subscription scripture to their wireless plan you get a free Disney plus subscription if you want dead but we don't know how many there are like me so the ten million is a little opaque right but it's still more than analysts suspected and the Disney stock just jumped on that news because it shows what either and all of his people have been saying that Disney is the brand brand in the entertainment space. And if anyone is going to succeed in this Netflix era on digital. It's going to be Disney. Yeah it's interesting that one of the you know I did sign up for it and then I had at this moment as a person without a little kid. I know your kid has been just. I think gambling this thing up right. Yeah Yeah but as a grownup whose child is no longer a kid like that Not only only did is sort of pause and think what I'm watching. I'm not like dying to see star wars again Of course I will at some point. Checkout them into Laurean but it didn't feel that you know based on the star our wars universe. I didn't feel that urgent and I tried to engage my college age daughter and say hey you love school musical and now there's this sort of fun thing and she was like. Yeah I'm okay so I you know it's not it's not necessarily I have this burning desire but I do think they will have no problem reaching their goals. Because of of that Cornucopia of a product that you know appeals to so many people yeah I mean Bagger has said by two thousand twenty four. They won't between sixty and ninety million subscribers to to make this thing a viable replacement for all the revenue they're giving up By not licensing this content to various television platforms and they took hit and their most recent earnings call. It was a seven hundred forty million dollar charge to the unit that houses this new direct to consumer product which is the cost of of putting all this content directly on their own platform. And not selling it so this is a major risk but so far at least it seems like Disney plus is off to a very promising beginning. Yeah meanwhile you know Disney has said it will do It will try to push push people who now subscribe to the FX Streaming Service to effects on Hulu which ultimately means that they will try to get somebody like me who might like things like fx offerings like better things absorb Lanta to pay the money for a bundle. Which is what I've been trying to avoid of Hulu? ESPN and Disney plus not for the seven dollars a month for Disney plus plus right now but for thirteen dollars a month. Which means that? I can't necessarily escape if I want to watch this. FX stuff. And I probably will want to watch some stuff. Yeah your lifelong goal of trying to not pay for. ESPN hitting by the Walt Disney Company. Because if you want the eveque shows in the FX ex- streamers now going away it's going to be bundled on Hulu as ethics on Hulu if you want that you're GonNa pay for Hulu and you're GONNA pay for Disney plus. Why not get the bundle that for thirteen dollars also includes? ESPN that's the way to keep ESPN floating even as people cut the cord. Thank you matt. Thank you that's Matt Bellamy editorial director of the Hollywood Hollywood reporter. He joins me this Monday at one thirty on the business. I'm Kim Masters. This is the Hollywood breakdown.
Disney+ Goes for the Jugular: Buy Two Years, Get the Third Free
"This year and also closing out the year there's going. I want to be a lot more streaming platforms available which is going to put some more pressure on companies that have been longtime recommendations at the full here like net flicks and so today. We're just talk about it. We're going to talk about some of our options when it comes to streaming video and investing in these kinds of companies and really how does it look for Netflix doc well later. We didn't get to later. I don't know if so from the research I did every article I read. I was just like ooh not but I don't know Netflix. I'd say it's more challenging environment today than it was five years ago about that for every everyone all the time I well. Let's start off by talking about Disney. of course Disney earlier this year actually just last month two months ago. Announced Disney plus was coming so let's head to the tail of the tape hape. Disney plus is GonNa Launch on November twelve so it doesn't have any subscribers to talk yet well. That's not true actually. Keep going all right. Content will include Disney Pixar Marvel Star Wars stuff twentieth century. Fox Movies Twenty five original series also National Geographic. It's expected that Disney plus will have about seven thousand television Asian episodes and five hundred films. Eiger says eventually the whole vault. Yes the whole waltz. We'll be available on Disney plus all right so how much is Disney GonNA spend well. They're gonNA spend about five hundred million in original content for the service but obviously they're spending a lot of money on content all the time everywhere the man delorean Laurean alone one of the Star Wars TV shows is going to cost a hundred million dollars so that five hundred million might be a low ball offer. Just one of the original series is causing that much price will be sixty nine ninety nine a year or about seven dollars a month you can also do a bundle with Hulu in which there's Disney has recently taken control of and also ESPN plus and that will be twelve ninety nine a month. So that's the tale of the tape eight for Disney plus. I think as both a lover of Star Wars and a parent of a six year old girl we are going to be running not walking to sign up for Disney snip lasts while I fully agree with you in as a parent of two older girls. We've got a freshman in high school in eighth grader I can't believe your oldest is in high school. I know every birthday. They have reminds me that I had one two they have there's a lot of content that they wanNA watch dizzy pluses wells. I think they've done a good job of of of building out this offering that is going to scratch in. It's for everyone so to speak going back to just the subscriber count that you talked about a little bit earlier. Disney did something very very clever at the D twenty three conference this year where they you know they they release all this information on what's going on in the universe and so of course between three had much much to do with dizzy plus in the contents coming out and they offered pre subscriptions. You could sign an advance and not only that they said if you sign up for two years we'll give you the third one for free so they really were working on pulling the levers to get those subscribers in their early. in by all accounts it's worked out pretty well. It certainly overloaded the servers and shut everything down for a little while until they get back in there to fix it but it does sound like a lot of people are as enthusiastic as you you and I and I I would assume pros probably pretty busy as well very much about the star wars by kids are probably too old for the Disney stuff but about about the high school musical series. I might just have to convince them that they still like just enough so I can get the

"You lose? It tile helps you find it. The an an iphone out and Mike Farley is here to tell us more about it. I like h we. Pleasure to have you. Here child story is pretty amazing. You went from crowdfunding on self starter in two thousand thirteen to Laurean units sold into years. Congratulations on that phenomenal. But crowdfunding a hardware project also comes with its own challenges right up and lots of delays before anything has ever shipped, and you kind of encountered a little bit of that in the beginning. How long did it take you to ship your product after you raise the capital what happened with that situation? So it was in June of twenty thirteen that we launch our cropping campaign, July when we closed it out, and we started shipping product in may of twenty fourteen so about ten months went by when we started shipping. Of things from customers. Didn't you? Yes. That is a one piece of the crowdfunding puzzle that probably doesn't get told too much. But yeah, customers do want their products, and they ask a lot. That was our number one question for a very long time. Whereas my tile, so we certainly had to staff up on the customer care side to take care of that. But a lot of the challenges were around manufacturing the product one of them in particular was. Sonically welding the tiles together. There's two pieces that get ultrasonic welded together. And when you're doing just, you know, hundreds a day at the manufacturing facility, the problems you run into in the precision, you need on that tool is much much different than the precision you need when you're building tens of thousands. Right. So those were the types of problems we had to get through with our manufacturing partners to get the product to market and customer care side. How did you handle the customers who were griping? We just had to let them know that we were working on it. And we gave them periodic updates and gave them the current estimates. And they just had to be patient. And then also we we made it very easy for folks to refund that was one thing that I was adamant about from the beginning. Someone doesn't want to wait. They want their money back. No problem at all no questions asked. Here's your money back lesson. Right. The customer service goes a long way. All right. Tell us about the single biggest mistake you've made in business. Biggest mistake. Well, I can I can recall one very big mistake challenge that we encountered. It was when the iphone six came out we quickly learned that all the tiles out in the field. I didn't work with the iphone six. Oh, why is that it was something to do with low level? Now are tiles didn't have over the air from where updated time so we had to really figure things out. And so we immediately the team immediately set into motion a great plan. We actually halted the production line at our contract manufacturer, we quickly put together a firmware update. In tile to address the issue with the new iphone sixes? And then we also contacted all the customers that we could tell had iphone sixes, and we started sending them new tiles with this new firmware. Fortunately, Ross a couple weeks after we had that whole system rolled out. The iphone six released a new version of IOS when it actually fix the problem in software. So all of the tiles in the field continued started working again with the iphone six. So where do you go from here with tile? So just recently a couple of weeks ago, we orange tile swim as we call it. This is a very thin version of tile that you can slide right into your wallet. You could also stick it to a passport stick it to a laptop. And this was really important as part of our three prong strategy number. One was just an introduced the world is smart location. Now, many people know how much time they spend working for stock, and we want to create a very simple product, and you can put under keys to help you find it in this really has gotten wheels turning for the consumers watch our second product the tile swim in number three was launching. Our tile smart location at this is the platform that word using to integrate our technology into any bluetooth.

"Laurean Columbia, the original the best. There are only three African Americans in the whole of Senate. You're one of them are Democrats. So as we go forth. It's interesting to note, your prominence there as a person of color, and then I want to get from you, which you want the country to hear about what Stephen King said. Well, first, let me just congratulate and thank my Republican leaders. Kevin McCarthy Joni earth's Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Jason Chaffetz who've all spoken out loud and clear and rebuke the comments of Steve king. I think the house will handle its business. I have confidence that Kevin McCarthy. We'll do the right thing. And we'll do it very quickly. So I look forward to that outcome. But for me, it's not about the Republican party. Steve king's comments are is analytical to what is. In fact, the American dream the durability of the American dream is a strength of the American spirit. And what he did was he struck against the American speed spirit. So you weaken the spirit, and when that happens our nation is less competitive globally. I wanted you to hear from Senator Scott there about Steve king's remarks, I didn't wanna just talk to you about what happened on the view and to make a Mallory and. Which is obviously heightened right now because of Steve king, and and that whole controversy without airing out. What's the king said, which was essentially wended, white supremacy and white nationalism become a bad thing? I forget the exact quote, it was something along those lines at actually here. Of course. This is the Buck Sexton show, we are precise. Thank you produce your Mike, the New York Times, quoted Steve king, asking white, nationalist, white supremacists. Western civilization. How did that language become offensive? When someone does something like this, it it ticks me off on multiple levels. When someone says something like this who claims to be a Republican or a conservative because it makes the cause and the job of conservatism harder. He makes it harder for all of us. Now, which means that I'm obviously going to very vehemently oppose people who say things like this because conservatism is all about an ideology of individual responsibility. Intrinsic? Human worth and human dignity, and the respect that we all owed to each other as God's creatures and as human beings, we are all equal in the eyes of God without that, you don't have conservatism. Without that. You got you got something else. I don't know what it is. And perhaps Steve king just incredibly poorly worded worded something incredibly poorly. I can't apparently work things. Well, right now, either he essentially might have just said something that sounded terrible that he didn't intend to but it sounded terrible. And so you gotta call somebody out for that. And I don't think he's walked back at all. But I wanted to note there, you had GOP Senator, and he's an African American, of course, Senator Scott, and he's saying that this has no place, and he pointed out that a lot of the most prominent GOP folks out there in congress say this has no place. So don't let them eat ego thing. Republicans never condemn this stuff. Oh, no. We condemn it. All the time. We condemn it. We don't like it. And we don't like the lies around situations. Like this either where we are told, okay? Conservatives have no problem with this bull crap. Now with that said, I would like to move on for just a couple moments here to the teachers strike out in L A, as you know, I'm heading out to San Diego tonight. I will be there and coming to you assuming I can figure out the scheduling of things that should be coming to you from the near the border tomorrow on radio the normal time. So don't worry about that. Although I may have to have a pinch hitter. If the logistics get too complicated because I'm going to be going all over the place at the border, and I'm looking forward to getting a lot of ground truth as well as spending some time in sixty five degree weather instead of twenty five degree weather. That sounds particularly nice. But there's a teachers strike that will be happening in Los Angeles. And I think that this is a good opportunity to point out that the teachers, I'm not just knee jerk. Oh, you know, the teachers they want more money is is about the teachers. Have a pretty good case for getting a pay raise not not an iron clad case. But when you look at where they are vis-a-vis where they were fifteen or twenty years ago and the pay increases over time. Teachers, I think are on some reasonable ground, especially in places like West Virginia where they were the forty nine out of fifty in terms of overall pay teachers should be well compensated as teachers, right? They should be well compensated, the grand scheme of things we can't pay them like investment bankers, although investment bankers who tell you. They can't get paid like Silicon Valley barons. But teachers overall have had a decent point. The problem though, in Los Angeles is where's all the money going because there's a lot of money, and they have in fact, two billion dollars of funds that have been set aside that the city of Los Angeles, of course, entirely run by Democrats isn't entirely the school district in Los Angeles. It's a democrat owned and operated and run situation. Right. The Democrats are completely in charge. I don't think anybody would deny that. That's just the truth. The problem, though, is that the money that they want to use for a teacher raise is allocated to retirees from the school system and their benefits you see one part of the conversation whenever you're talking about public sector unions. That does not get accounted for is. What are we paying for the previous workforce that we had? That's usually where unions get the sweetest deals because it's a lot easier to say we're going to give people great benefits in thirty years or twenty years when they retire. Instead of we're going to give them a big pay raise today. So they tend to have a lot of major back in public sector expenses and the other place where there's a problem is you could give all teachers this is courtesy, my friend Inez. Felker step men over at the. Federalist you could give all teachers and eleven percent raise. If you adjust indexed the increase in administrative hiring, meaning admin staff to the rest of the schools growth. So if there's ten percent more students, you have ten percent, more admin staff the truth is that the money and the teachers in the teaching systems of these major school district's like Los Angeles has gone to support personnel. Admin staff a lot of whom are unnecessary and are just part of a giant democrat jobs program. So, you know, it's more complicated than just teachers should get raised. Should you? Just get a raise. Maybe they should get something raise. But they've also going to look at how they're going to fund their pension how they're going to fund their healthcare benefits. And what about all this admin staff they have around. That's the part of this the public won't find out about. And that's why this will all eventually be handled with you guessed it more raising of taxes, which will cause more middle class flight from California. W baltimore's..

The aero verse has huge crossovers every fall. This fall, no, no different. We are going to be introduced to the city of Gotham and a new character to the aero verse bat woman, they cast ruby rose to be bat woman, and they've shown some costume pictures of her and looks like they took them straight out of the comic book. This is right off the pages of DC. Ruby rose has the look. She has the acting chops the arrow verse. All those shows are crazy popular. I'm loving that they're expanding, especially with Gotham going away. CW is expanding their CW superhero universe, so might not be long before we start seeing some more of these guys in their own series. DND players. If you remember a while back, they added a new class. Old spice came up with the gentlem-. In class based off of their commercial character? Well, not to be outdone. They've made another new class. Not old spice is just made up by the fans called the murder Hobo class. If you've ever played DND, you know, the murder hobos are the players who just want to maim kill rape, torture for no reason whatsoever. Just do it in cause chaos. They have made their own class with class defining rules. Now you can actually download this from DM guild, which is it's probably not going to be considered canon for DND, but being on DM guild is probably the next best thing. If you're DM is allowing it, you might try this murder Hobo class. If that's not for you, get the old spice gentlemen class there I've played the gentlemen class. It's pretty cool. You should try it out, murder Hobo class, not into that type of character. A lot of people are, but, hey. Now you've got rules for it by now. You've heard that Disney has fired James Gunn the guy who wrote and directed the guardians of the galaxy hugely popular movies. He was fired over some tweets. He made ten years ago or so. They were made in jest, but they were taken, I guess, by Disney's seriously. They didn't like the content a lot of dark humor that they didn't think was funny. So they've, they fired him well, as soon as they did that, all the other companies were lined up at his door knocking and the one he answered for was DC. The DC universe is going to have James Gunn attached to the new suicide squad to movie. He's already proven. He can write group movies with guardians of the galaxy in just do a killer job. It hasn't been decided if he's going to direct suicide squad to yet. But just the fact that he's writing it is it's mind blowing. We're going to see probably the best suicide squad incarnation. You could think of Batiste day Batista's already said that he wants to come over. If James Gunn is directing it and play a character. I just I can't wait for this to see a movie be as popular or some of the marvel movies would be great. I would love to see James Gunn grab this and run with it and just do a whole series of DC movies. So congratulations, James Gunn. Congratulations. DC marvel. I hope the guy you've replacing with does just as well. Let's finish this up with some Star Wars. Let's start with the mandatory and show by John Fabbro. If he don't know already, the Disney play channel is picked up a big budget, Star Wars series that they're letting Jon Favreau writing direct. Jon Favreau has done an excellent job with all the other stuff. He's worked on from iron man, two zero through gemology all the way up to jungle book the live action one. Handing him the reins of this in him picking a character or a classic character. So I contacted MandA Laurean can't wait man in case you didn't know Django fit Boba fett are the main delorean's you're probably more familiar with or maybe some the ones from the clone war series.
