U.S. drops drug charges against Mexican general, clearing way for transfer

"Unexpected move by the U. S. Justice Department has thrown the US Mexico relationship into the spotlight. Last month, former Mexican General Salvador sent Frago Cepeda, who was arrested in Los Angeles and face charges of drug trafficking and corruption. Today, though a U. S District Court judge allowed prosecutors to drop all charges against sent way goes opening the door for him to return to Mexico and allowing Mexican officials to investigate. Walk us through this eyebrow raising move. The world's Jorge Valencia joins us from Mexico City, Jorge What was the Justice Department accusing sent way goes off remind us prosecutors were saying that he was using his position as the former defense minister of Mexico. He was the head of the Defense Ministry from 2012 to 2016. He said he was using that position to allow an organized crime group known as H two to traffic drugs to United States without interference. Now prosecutors appear to have a very solid case. They spent more than a year on this. So it was a very big surprise when none other than William Barr, the U. S. Attorney general himself issued a statement yesterday saying that prosecutors were going to drop all charges and return General Sam Fly goes to Mexico Mexico's foreign relations Minister Marcelo and gave public remarks about this yesterday. Would out here is saying that he doesn't see this as a path toward impunity, but rather his way in which the Department of Justice is showing respect to Mexico and showing respect to Mexico's military. This feels like such a 1 80, especially considering sent for egos was arrested. Just last month s O. What kind of reaction has there been? Shock? Bewilderment? Uh, I mean, for people who are involved in efforts to fight organized crime here in Mexico. They're very surprised by this because this isn't just about the charges that Cienfuegos was facing in District court in New York, but also about other crimes that many people believe that the government was involved in while he was the defense minister. Most notably the case of 43 University students who went missing in the southern state of Guerrero and were never found. I spoke with Mike the hell he is the former director of international operations at the D E. A. And he was based here in Mexico for more than 10 years, quite frankly, in my 31 year career with the Drug Enforcement Administration I had never seen anything like this. This is outlandish and the most repulsive thing that I've ever seen in the history of U. S. Justice. Marco. One important piece of context to have is that Mexico's courts are notoriously challenged. Some estimates find that nine out of 10 crimes in Mexico go unpunished. So when you have somebody as powerful as the former defense minister general of Cienfuegos if he actually did commit any of the crimes that he was being accused of in the United States There is a good chance that he could walk away without ever facing trial. Are there any theories as to why the U. S. Justice Department would drop these charges? I mean drug trafficking. Mexico remains a high priority for us national security. There seems to be more to the story. I should be clear that it is speculation. But the prevailing theory is that by returning General Cienfuegos to Mexico, the Trump administration is returning a favor to the administration of President Andres Manuel Lopez. Laura Laura. Mexico has done a lot of work to prevent people over the past couple of years from migrating from Central America toward the United States. It's very difficult to tell because by releasing General Xin flag goes, one question is answered. But many, many, many more questions are being asked the world's Jorge Valencia in Mexico City. Thank you very much for this. You're welcome, Marco.

"Let that purple around for a little bit. Welcome back to talk radio 5 60 cous. I thought I'd never left up right here anyway. Let's get the Laura Laura's Laura. She's the missing. No welcome, Laura. Hi, Bob. Thanks for taking my call. Sir. I wonder if you could give me some advice about how to keep Cabbage butterflies off broccoli and brussel sprouts. Yeah, there's a product out there called RO cover. Oh, yes, Okay, and it's just floating on the top of the area. The only problem is when the wind comes up, If it ever does, and cleans out the air were it will blow away. But then initially, I think And they won't be a problem after the rain. Okay? So put that on and they go away for some reason. Now in case use, you know, they sort of lay their eggs and you didn't get there in time. Look under on the under leaf of a leaf. It will not be the you know the cabbage. Part it'll be on the loose leaves. And if you look underneath there, and you can just squish him those eggs before they hatch. OK, OK. Do you think I could be admitting of as a row cover or do I need infect that insect fabric? No, just plain gross cover. Yeah, the road cover will keep the boss off. Okay. The product recover, OK? Yeah. The netting doesn't do anything because a moth can get through it. They can. Okay. Okay, So whatever, Yeah. Row covers that I guess the name but it works. I've used it a lot, especially in my garden of new beginning initially, and then we don't somehow or other we don't have them anymore. I don't know what happened to him unless by by covering them up, and they didn't lay there, Agent we didn't let the eggs hatch. Maybe the cycle's gone for them. Maybe. Or they found another neighbor with cabbage. I don't know. We'll find out someday. All right. Okay. Thank you, Laure. I love the name. Hey, let's go to Bob and Sebastian. Cool. I like that name too. Okay. Hi there, Bob. How are you? Hello, Bob. Come on, Bob, wake up. Hello, Bob. I'm here, Bob. You can't hear. Yeah. Now I can. Where have you been? What You do have to go outside and take a leak or something? Do that a lot, too. You know, you can always go inside when you got dirty C from gardening. Well, I understand that. Ah, good. I'm tired of fighting two gophers around here. So I'm going to do next year. What a lot of people are doing with these. These animals watering turnoffs. Oh, yeah, That's my raised beds like my primary And probably most important question is I see a drain hole on near the bottom. Is that enough to Teo? What? Let the water out or do I have to add a holes? You know, into the bottom of the tank, the holes in the bottom of useless you need to do it on the side. Okay? And they don't have to be. Ah, no, Let's see. I use them at my new beginning Garden for strawberries. I don't think we use it for that anymore. But anyway Ah, I think you need to have about three on his sign. Okay? Okay, But what what diameter All Lissy. It was ah, half an inch drill. Okay, I can do. That s Oh, yeah. Three on each side. Don't put any rock in the bottom and all that crap. Just use playing plane soil all the way through, and I think he'll be fine but least we were with ours. Because what happens here I make I make baskets for my gofer baskets and plant my bikini in them. But near the end of the season, what happens is the roots have gone outside the bathroom or the basket and then They just eat away and then the plants kind of dry up on me. That's what happens Well, this time of the year I was thinking now is the time of the year when they the zucchini starts to give up. So I thought you were given up there giving up generally, but I've got to tell you a funny one. We had to zucchinis hanging the other day, and we came out the next day, and we presume that there's a kidney got pulled down a gofer hole. Oh, good explanation. There's no other explanation. Well, okay. Yeah. One of my golfers air really? My very first program that I ever was on was on Owen Span show. And the constant calls were nothing but gophers, Gophers, gophers and some this gala phones up from Seattle, and she says, No, she was local. And then her sister lives up in Seattle, and she said Well, my sister has the best results she puts X elects down the hole. And then I said, Well, I certainly going to keep him on the run. And the program went to hell. After that. I don't want to keep the Bob Thanks again. Alright. Thankyou, Bob, you take care. Sandy is in Sunnyvale high. There's of Sandy. Hi. How are you today? Yes line made to listen. In your moment in the moment I remember why I called you now. OK? I'm sorry. And my figs the last few on the tree are exploding. From the inside out. And they're not ripe but of you know where their little belly button is. They explode from there. And see all the beautiful Burgundian. Well, yeah, the blossom. Yeah. The blossoms is inside. Yeah, exploding. Have you changed the water situation at all? No. You told me not to water. My fig tree. Okay? Who loves good girl Don't want him. I didn't good. Then that shoots that answer. I thought about I don't water, You know that. Maybe maybe the skin would Get the water, but so does the inside and wouldn't that make more explode? Yeah, it would. So you don't buy not watering. You're in good shape. What I Sandy? I don't know. Basically, it's an answer. Um Other than they just, you know, maybe shouldn't be harvested rather than just sit on the tree. When they're hard..

Real quick. When your son was driving the car. Did you say it? Just shut off. It just stalled while he was driving. Yes, it turned off and he couldn't get it to start again. Okay? And when it goes to start it just cranks and pranks and cranks kind of like it's out of gas or nothing happens at all. Ah, about question. I can't clarify. I know when we went there and it was pulled over on the side of the road. He tried to turn it on. And there was no prank, but that there was like a little almost like a man called like a clicking noise. I can hear like a tapping noise coming up in front. But they go. No, he doesn't do anything. Right. Okay, so and I know you had talked to you to replace the key. Maybe talk about you saw the security. The security light was flashing. But you know that the repairs that I think you guys have attempted on your own. Are not Probably the problem and could have potentially made things worse. Talked about the security light flashing Tim. I have never seen a car stall while driving because there was something wrong with kie. See, I don't know. Maybe it's happened before. But I've never heard of that. So replacing the key and doing that. They did the ring that the receiver around that where you you insert the key, and there's a device that has to read the key. They got a key from a locksmith. Now we don't know if the key was programmed, right? We don't know if the antenna that they installed needs to be programmed. So now when someone goes to fix this car, Laura, they have to start. Not even from the beginning. They have to go backwards a little bit. So it is. I think it's time to get it to professional repair shop and have it fixed. So if you're looking for a shop again, go to bumper to bumper area dot com. But you have thrown enough parts.

Dressing your child in a gender neutral way

"This week we have a message from listener Allie and Allie wrote twist, and she said in reference to you and Rilo. She said I like how you always dress Rilo in cute, but mostly gender-neutral close. Maybe an episode on that and other parenting choices would be interesting. Yes, I thought I would just talk about my choices of how to parent like. Laura! Laura's because very my not the expert but I. Do you are aware of an expert more of an expert than? I. Genuinely. Don't even think that's true. I have the viewpoint that I am one hundred percent the best mom in the whole world for Rilo. And Not for any other child, so I can tell you how I parent Rilo, but I very much believe that everybody is the best parent for their own particular child and nobody else's child. That is something I. believe so strongly, so I can give you my take. It might not at all apply to you, and also it might not even it might not apply. Apply to my hopeful-. Hopefully, I have more children or a child. At least it might not apply to my second child. It may not apply to Rilo. In two years three years I have no idea but going into it I very much was like we chose the name Rilo when we didn't know if it was a boy or girl wanted to gender neutral name. I tried to kind of dress. Him Gender Neutral I. Give Him toys of all sorts. And then you just see what they're. You know I really try to not. Be Conscious not to push. Gender specific stereotypical things on him. But I fully support it whatever he's interested in, so I bought him like baby dolls and his kitchen, which I guess, unfortunately are things associated with women, and he has his cars in his trained in his truck like stuff and I'd say he likes both right now he is fully fully into like trains and trucks and cars, and then and so we buy more. More of those books and he'll like. Tell us what books he wants. He'll look on the back of his books and point to other books. He wants because he sees the pictures of other books, but like the other day he said I want this book. And it was like a book of a Princess so I'm going to get a firm. You know so right. Much, take that stance I'm not gonNA like I'm not like dressing my little boy, and like to to for like that would feel like performance. Likely asks for two unless Yasser Tutu exactly so. Like! Whether we have a boy, a girl or boy next whenever whenever that is I hope I'll use. His hammy downs and I don't know I kinda just try to dress him. Gender Neutral I. Guess would be the Word I. keep his hair long. He's got his little bond I don't think about it all that much, but like before. Da Grana we were in a little kid store, and he pointed to a shirt had lake just like trucks and cars all over it, and it was not something that I would ever picked out for him myself, but he's like. Do. You want this shirt and it's his favorite shirt and he goes in his journey grabs it so sometimes you try your hardest. It's been interesting because you try not to push these gender things, but sometimes kids kids are like into certain machines or In his case, he really loves cars and trucks. Not just like what he's in do it's not my passions, not nick's half in. But like my nightmare nightmares, having a child, and then being really into sports. They chose sports I would support them. Exactly I wouldn't know how to navigate it, but you don't have like deep thoughts on the issue other than I'm consciously choosing not to push the. Words you will never hear come out of my mouth. are that's for a girl, or that's for a boy? Like those are words they would never cross my lips or like he wears pink pants and I got him like I was looking for a Sippy Cup. At whole foods for him. When I was ordering my online groceries and I was like sippy cups for kids, one they had was like bright pink with red. Pink Flower Ping Carts and I was like great, perfect cue, cute for a kid, Q. Boy girl, and I bought it for him I'm not like. Like you know like I'm definitely socially conditioned to be like. Oh, they have a girl one, but I like very quickly after like. Check my own bias against that and say like He. I am going to buy him. This Pink Cup with pink hearts, and like that will be my son's next cup. You know that he carried with him. Everywhere are little. cousin Henry who is going to be a ring bearer for our wedding. He loves pink and Purple They are his favorite colors. It why love is the fact that you literally have sounds like that was the first time you'd ever verbalize those words. I'm gay and then within about three seconds you're kissing a woman. She just stuck tongue thrown up for where she's bloody gorgeous. She's ready Fan. I'M NOT GONNA say no and honestly wanted for such a long time and then obviously a couple of months down the line. Chris and I start going out together and my best friend best friend from college and like it was just so amazing. I had this guy best friend the I could be myself around all that stuff going school on new fancy my best friend at school. Actually I'd accepted everything. Do you ever told you best friend at school. I've told her since we still in really good contact now and we did have a bit of a case in a nightclub in the she went. You always fancied SCO avenue it co- cover stop it but yeah on. A sleigh is just amazing and then going through. I realized I thought I liked boys as well. I thought I was bisexual because I had such love. You still have this boy talk. So what happened to him? Well I just kind of Went Down Essex to visit my family to visit him. Nauseous largest is just not for me. Didn't she say to him? I can't be reviewed because on lesbian artist could earn just went ready. I wasn't ready and all that judgment. I thought I was going to get. You know I always as kind of grown up being around heterosexual people all the time like I didn't until I went to college. I never I've never had a gay friend or it wasn't until as much as it is. Now I I remember seeing grey notre ones in G. Y. On shooters that's amazing. He's gay made on TV. I just it does make a difference. Doesn't it having those role models and those people out Amoco's well that's really amazing what you're doing as well because having things like this. I think if I'd had this growing up it would have helped me to just accept to lot quicker like I went through thing whereas maybe if I just set with another guy I would be straight because I really struggled with. Don't want to be a lesbian for was. Why was there a period than what you really were in the closet and didn't want to admit it to be especially when I came home from college like summer holidays and that kind of stuff unites along six weeks? When you can't feel you can be yourself. I mean I don't need to have a badge. Sign on Lesbian. But you know if I saw Angelina Jolie on telly I want to be out. Say she fit mom more. Hold him back a huge part of May and of my life and there was this guy. It fixed incomes calm the Gary H and he says a fancy adult. I kept knocking on the door. Boot Ronald Flowers. I even went on a date things. My mom was always lovely what you should go on a date with him. I'm not in the end. Don't thinking what am I doing? So this one I sixteen. It was about eight months off to my first lesbian. Kiss only eight months in the closet though nothing. I honestly I've had a really easy story. Compared to a lot of my friends it was just basically me except for myself to mom. Mom I gotTa tell you something. I'M LESBIAN. She went all right. Then what you want dinner. Brilliant Mommy Brooks absolute legend but honestly since then she said to me awful guy for if as I thought. I'll just go with it but should well. He's not a phase now obviously off the married to a woman. Did you have any questions? She didn't have a she up in conversation again. She just went with their. You know and you know if I was coming out. She's kind of all we going to like an algae bt new tonight and then the next door to me and that kind of

Coronavirus: List Of Canceled Or Postponed Hollywood & Media Events

"For the past few days I've been sort of locked in my house and I'm sure you have to have been locked in your house you've been keeping an eye on what your favorite musicians what your favorite artists are saying about the way they're going to have to cancel their tour is how this is going to change the way they make a living how this could potentially you know ruin them really devastate their lives last week the Juno awards were cancelled as part of the code nineteen outbreak because gatherings of people are risky thing right now tons of major arts events have been postponed or canceled or shut down billion dollar movies Broadway productions concerts ballet summer festivals museums house concerts local festivals art gallery shows our queue this panel is here to talk about the impact the coronavirus his hand on the arts you're gonna hear about the collateral damage from all these cancellations and I what we can do to maybe help are to stay above water sewer Berman writes for the website Pitchfork a harmony is a freelance music critic hi guys how are you okay hello let's start with the junos harmony what was your feeling when you find out that you know it's for cancer so by the time that you know's what canceled we've already started to see a wave of cancellation so it wasn't a surprise at all I think it was the right thing to do to be proactive rather than reactive in the situation although it was unfortunate certainly was to what you think I think there is this may be small window of opportunity we thought okay maybe the genus and stay ahead of this because at the time you know south by southwest to cancel but that is a much more of a global gathering you know we have people coming from all over the world to that festival and you know even when Pearl Jam cancel their tour that was done with the recognition that a lot of their fans flying in from all over the place to see their shows so there is that maybe that something that because the buyers hadn't hit central Canada yes and because the jurors is much more you know confined to the Canadian music industry that maybe you know the show could go on but you know once the cases started popping up in Canada they really had no choice and also even if you know they could somehow one hundred percent guarantee a safe space there I don't know if any of us were really in the mood to celebrate yes we can you know I think back to the Grammys which happen on the day that Kobe Bryant died and the weird Paul in the room that you know cast I can't imagine would have been like to like celebrates in this environment yeah I know I I was there I was in Saskatoon we flew in I'm I'm Wednesday night preparing to do the show Thursday night and we were of course you know kind of bombs that it was it was like sort of intellectually bomb to that it was canceled right you know I would've been nice to do show but immediately everyone understood right no part of anybody there that was like all this is that this is annoying and it's been really amazing to see kind of the how artists are at the same time upset but they also kind of get it right right it's about taking care of each other at this point so I think everybody can relate to that point but I think about musicians who are preparing for the summer festival season it's a great opportunity not just to get make a lot of new fans but also to make pretty considerable chunk of your income harmony do you think this could spell the end of summer festival season so I think it's still slightly too early to tell there are festivals like south by southwest of Coachella that have been canceled or postponed but those were taking place earlier in the season and so it made sense to cancel them I think everyone is in a bit of a wait and see pattern right now they're still festivals coming up like broccoli city festival or a Glastonbury just announced their headliner rolling loud in Miami there's still a chance those could go on but there are so many unknown variables to contend with so we'll just have to wait and see yeah I think the best case scenario is that this next month will be brutal and then hopefully the worst of it will be done and will be come out the other side and get ready for summer even even then he's going to want to get together in a large group you know kind of ever again it might it might take a little while before people regain that confidence you're spending you know just two days in my home with my children you know I'm ready to go go to a festival I I missed possible I mentioned that we're gonna be talking to you I mean think of it David Hein the creators of come from away in just a little while about their show that's gone dark Broadway went dark last week the Mirvish you know the big Broadway shows in Toronto have gone dark as well a lot of theatre has been canceled store what what what does that mean for theater more widely I mean on top of just like a hundred million dollars in revenue potentially like going away you know that not that there's never a good time for a global pandemic pandemic but it's a really bad time for theater because that were in the run up season to the Tony awards eligibility there is about six new plays about to debut on Broadway to that we're trying to get into that deadline for Tony awards consideration so that's you know those plans have all been scrapped and who knows what it spells for the Tony awards this year perhaps the biggest and death now to the end to the live concert industry S. surrounding covered nineteen is when live nation one of the largest concert promoters in the entire world and also they were suspending all tour is in North America harmony what's at stake here so they canceled are halted all of their domestic and international tourists and that represents countless venues artists people who are on the production for those shows who are not making money right now because they're not working I'm although it's important to note that live nation did mention that there's no layoffs planned at the moment and that they can whether other financial hit that they'll be taking so I'm hoping that this temporary measure is a temporary setback for people but like Stewart said we can get back to work a sooner rather than later how many is a great point there I mean we've been talking so much about the impact and artists themselves but you know tore promoters folks work on cruise lighting folks M. S. sound folks yeah this is an industry that's full of thousands of workers and you know they're dependent on the show going on and with no show they have no job and you know all these people are contract workers and freelancers so you know it's not like they have a salary that they can lean on in these times if you just tuning in out here with a harmony and Stuart Berman here as our queue this music panel talking about the devastating impact of the work of cover nineteen on the arts sector especially in music given everything we've been talking about here is a lot of conversations around toward insurance and I've had a lot of people text me and say you know are these positions covered are they going to be fine can you little bit do you explain what tore insurances harmony yes so typically there's two kinds of insurance behind the torso there's one for the promoter and one that covers the artist they don't cover pandemics typically however they were written in a way where an artist might be covered if they contracted a covert nineteen or if the venue was forced to close because the government told them to however a lot of insurance policies starting in January started to write in clauses that specifically exclude covert nineteen related losses so well hold on yes on the whole a lot of promoters and artists are on the hook for the losses well you know insurance is a gamble like that's all it is at the end of the year betting on an outcome happening or not happening and with cove in nineteen there's no gamble like if everything gets shut down so insurance companies aren't going to just offer that up freely so this is this is that the Arab artists would normally have insurance in case of cancellations this might not happen now because part of ours yeah I mean if they get in a car on the way the show would have to cancel you know that would be covered under typical policy but you know when there is a global pandemic that is shutting down everything I know there's no wiggle room there Laura Laura Jane grace is the singer and guitarist from the band against me she said the following on Twitter all the bands canceling shows because a corona virus are doing so because their insurance companies updated their policies to not cover cancellations due to the virus I know because ours did the same I know I mean it's sad but insurance companies aren't really in the business of paying out that many insurance claims especially because there would be a wave of cancellations all related to the same thing all coming in at the same time so unfortunately they are trying to re write the rules at the last minute to avoid having to pay those claims out yeah then we dive go fund me campaign St but like what's what's going to happen all these musicians with this with the minutes we're gonna talk it'll cost about that in a second but with the with this loss of revenue I mean it's it's crippling it's it's devastating to so many people you know because you know when you're on tour you're not just you know you're not making money like it's not a salary you're you're basically paying yourself day by day so the money you make on Tuesday night those towards your survival on Wednesday so for instance a young guy whose the recording alias of Ben cook who plays an aft up you know he's on tour in the states he was doing some small shows on his own and then he was going to join up with the band white reaper for a bigger tour and not been cancelled their tour so he was stranded in Texas because he was relying on that white reaper tour to take him all the way home right so you have to set up a go fund me which fortunately was successful but but but if you're a musician also and you're about to go into a lot of those costs are already page Mary had buses rented you may already have hotels done you might already have theaters but you might have accrued both these people have to get paid out I mean it almost doing a tour might be the worst situation you could be in right now yeah no I mean this is this is their salary this is where your income for the year you know and they're planning the these things out months in advance and I think okay my summers taken care of because I'm gonna be touring Europe in may or in April and so now that is gone and you know and they probably you know taken leave from their day job and you know can go back to that and so all these arrangements have been made that are now thrown you know up in the air and either yeah everyone

Reports Show Jobs Are Plentiful. Why Are People Still Struggling To Find One?

"You know if you want to find a job right now and you find out unemployment slow and so many jobs are creating you wonder why folks can't find that good job raises though a lot of questions about the kind of jobs that are being created in the low unemployment if you need a typical middle class or higher job you might find nothing available so the way I read into this is that there are this way our economy is changing the types of jobs that are available are changing and maybe it's it's a fair thing to say not all the changes for good because as opposed to the white collar wear a suit and tie to work company car for one K. kind of jobs are being replaced with lower wage lower skill jobs it's still a job big still need somebody to do it but is it like to get a job in a career that's kind of what it is if if you want a job working for left uber if you want a temp at that like one of these hollowing in pop up stores you are technically counted as employed I mean you're getting a paycheck right I guess you're getting a paycheck not a career and they don't pay as well so when you hear about the economic news of you know I'm I'm celebrating I'm not mad at a hundred twenty thousand jobs being created in October that's a good thing but again you take a look at what kind of jobs there's a there's a story I was reading and this is where we meet Laura Laura I had you know a great job as a marketing director and her company disbanded the one away she lost her job yeah and she is capped a job hunting diary this is something that she's always done so if you're looking for a job she always what you know what number jobs that I've applied for a white job MI applying for and what does it do all right so she can kind of keep track of these things and for she's been looking for a job now for over three years well and when asked how many John how many jobs have you applied for she was embarrassed to admit five hundred five zero zero and a lot of what's happening right now for her you know at first it might it did it may not have been a good fit or it didn't a lot of jobs and fit the parameters for what she was looking for she will arrive more than twenty five miles okay xi'an Jensen some standards which you know what your show it I'm not mad at that and over time she had to expanded I'll drive thirty five miles when you're down for life and never thought about applying for this now all apply for that and you can see through the years in her job diary how how her perspective is change she keeps taking classes she keeps her skills fresh which is also hearing from potential employers now three years out is that gap of unemployment scares them who that if you've been unemployed for an extended period of time a lot of them feel as though there's that that's a red flag even though she's been keeping her skills up and it's been very difficult for her to find a career employment I I think there is something to be said in a and and I would turn around and say that that this isn't nothing nothing to cheer about that the jobs of today's slash jobs of tomorrow we're going to look very differently a look very different from the jobs of the past as our economy technology automation whatever you want to call it starts to infiltrate more and more industries more more jobs there is going to have to be in a knowledge of it or an interesting ending that there's going to be a different skill set required in the future and I think it's very very difficult for people use this lady's example who have done one thing for so long and and done it well let's let's let's give her credit whatever what she was going really really good at it it just may not be a job that's needed much longer but she in here's where I where I feel for her and I feel for a lot of you listening right now she's doing everything right she struggles he still trust in classes on social media marketing yeah okay so this isn't just the you know yester year mad men kind of ad agency in marketing kind of stuff like she is is keeping those skills fresh yeah but yet still can't find those jobs and and she's she's done some contract work and she's not the only one this article who talked about how employers at times are looking down on contract work again that's another noon Ding against you and we find out that like yes hundred twenty eight thousand jobs created in October but a lot of them are are these these kind of temp jobs in one of four workers have unpredictable work schedules that's tough on families right one five were employed say they want to work more hours but can't get them wage growth is up less than three percent and we we always hear those stories of the percentage of Americans that wouldn't be able to absorb a four hundred dollar on and you know unexpected expense for an air conditioner or you know something that happens on your car I think the you know the economy is doing well yes and I think that that's a good thing but who's doing well for I was going to say that the the the if you look at these numbers and this isn't to to talk down about him again adding jobs is a good thing low unemployment the good thing full stop but not everyone's participating equally I think that might be a fair way to put it and I think the gap is widening and and there's plenty of data to back that up and again this isn't meant to be a political commentary by any stretch of imagination there are for the the middle class is shrinking as people are moving towards the edges you either have the the the gig economy you've got one two maybe three quote unquote part time jobs you do take you cobble together to make for one end and there's other people that are doing doing very very well for maybe a lot of their own doing good for them but how much is going to be left in the middle but as you see these these divergent lines arm what does our economy look like in the future you know and I think there's some really serious questions that a lot of folks should ask themselves you've you've heard people I mean if you're being honest with somebody politicians are never going to do it is could your job be outsourced automated when whatever it is and if the answer is yes well then it's incumbent upon you to start making decisions as to what you're going to do as opposed to crying foul when it actually happens I I use the term truck drivers and I I listen I got friends tribe big rigs and semi trucks all over the all over the country what the handwriting's on the wall well you know the the the the automated self driving this it's coming whether you won or not it's gonna happen you know one in and that reminds me what you're just saying right there about my dad and about my family okay you know my dad I got out of the navy and then went to work in a steel mill in Pittsburgh and may be what that's what you did back free worker working in the steel mill and and it was a great job but then the steel mills sort of the clothes any talk on employment and there were a lot of his buddies that said all the mills are gonna open up the bills are going to open up the bill's going to open up my dad's like that's that's gone and he took some time off and went back to his credit yeah and and there was a lot of pressure from our family to though for him to just go take a job any job just go in and he's a vinyl I'm gonna get an education and then really provide for a family and it really change the trajectory of our lives

What Dead Historical Women Can Teach Us About Dating and Sex

"For a long time i rode a sex dating column for the the new york post and i really appreciate that time in my life but since then i started writing about history and politics and every so often often someone comes to me and says would you ever consider writing a dating advice book and i always say the only way i would ever do that is if all of the advice is came from dead historical women and most of it was bad do you say as a joke yes always and then i said it to this one very nice editor on the phone who said well i'd love for you to do that can you can you get it in by june and i said yes and it was the easiest book sale i've ever made shots jets incredible i was gonna say did you sort of like say on to channel these women and because it's all of the advice sound so much in their voice it's just it's so good i'm i've always wished that somehow that would happen to me robert graves deflected criticism of his i claudius novels by telling a reporter that the entire manuscript had been dictated to him by emperor claudius himself in a dream so we don't want to start with that's a real humble brag it's a real humble brag of london emperor came to me and just story so no critiques please no none of none of these women came to munich dream cream i do read a lot of different books about them and took the cool historical tidbits that i found those books that i thought could be transcribed into good good advice for women right now what i really loved how in the insure you talk about how there's always some idiot on twitter that's like oh i wish women were women the way they used to be back in the day and like this book just kind of disproves that whole line of thought that is based on many real only no i'm i i have a twitter account i am yeah i'm familiar with dot com yeah and this totally disproves that way of thinking because women's since the beginning of time have kind and not been that ideal idea woman i think the more things change the more they stay the same and a lot of women in this book are doing things thanks i think we'd be considered very audacious by modern standards i'm kind of fascinated by grace kelly's end of a first date move where she would go into my i room of this and come up with no clothes and that's the way a lot of nudity so nudity in the book i'm also that's something that i really don't associate with grace as kelly in any of her alfred hitchcock movies now i love that and so you use that tibet to have her advice be make your feelings no yes she's real clear a lot of not scared to tell someone how they feel and then a yeah and then you write about how she'd be like go make some coffee and then go into the bathroom and come out naked i was like oh that is insane that that is actually what she did and i love that it's memorable also really feel like a man in the nineteen fifties and sixties when she was doing this probably just think they were making can coffee so let's talk about some more of the advice in the book patra that is the advice for making the first move what can we learn from her on making the first move cleopatra made i moves of really big and she really began her relationships with this very showy entrance entrance a lot of the mist and the stories about cleopatra hinge upon the idea that she was this ravishing beauty and she was us an attractive lady and they're all different ways of being beautiful but by any standards she wasn't especially good looking she was just really audacious basis and she really went for it and when she first met julius caesar she header self smuggled to him inside a federal that was dropped off at his feet feet and then lays blade before whose feet talking about how they could afford to an alliance which is not a thing that you might be able to recreate oh yeah like not necessarily you didn't like UPS to your lover a little desperate if we'd be really audacious lake uh-huh and then when she met mark anthony she had herself taken to him on a golden barge where she designed it to look like she was a goddess and she appeared to him if she was a golden goddess so cleopatra really thought about how she was going to plan her first move oof and i think it an age where a lot of us are very timid and wanna seem cool and have a call me maybe attitude approaching people cleopatra went for it like she went one hundred percent i honestly can kind of relate this particularly i'm on the part on the barge where she's the gold god it kinda can because so nicknamed gone on a first date and then i invited him to my holiday party and my holiday party i was like the star of the show like i i was going around with platters appetizers and like jello shots because this was like whatever like two thousand nine not the shots wherever cool but as i'm going around with platters never like laura oh my god like laura laura and i'm like the star of the show and i kinda take her advice to mean you know just be like the starve make yourself an unmistakable store yes staple star like have the attention be around you and it was like all my friends and it was like my house you know like i was the star of my holiday party and walked around like own my own the place grid right and i want to form an alliance that woman yeah i think that's actually a great way to translate that into modern day advice i feel like throwing party and inviting boys who have a crush on was also so big move i was single gal it usually worked really well unless the person didn't come in which case it felt like you were throwing that party for nine uh all these people are in my house i've got so many shots yeah i've been to your parties and you do throw a very good thank you i'm so you also have a section on slut shaming can you choose to feature josephine baker and that little micro in every possible way hero of the civil rights movement hero of the lost generation yet josephine baker is just the best and if you don't know her by name you definitely know her by image she's the one that has the banana skirt so oh you're right i'm writing in her voice say i'm writing as someone who danced topless and a banana skirt so why her for the slut shaming section i feel like josephine josephine baker is someone who had to go up against a lot of repressive rules of the time and i mean to head to leave america because she couldn't really prosper in america's a black woman and she was someone who i wouldn't say that she had no regard for those rules but she he was able to think about societal rules that served her and once it didn't and follow her own contents and her own desires and mm-hmm she strongly felt and i think many modern day women should strongly feel that her sexuality and her physical desires were nothing to be ashamed of she had a very large sexual appetite she loved having sex with people she had multiple marriages adopted a ton of children those desires did not impede her life in any way indeed the fact that she was comfortable in her body and comfortable with her sexuality is how she she became a great star and it was also because she chose to change her circumstances right by going to harris yeah we actually just did an episode on on if you should move if you you should mirror for data and just for a change of scenery if you're like in a funk also tried to come back to america and change everybody else's "Welcome everybody to brown chicken brown cow i am so excited with this with this interview today i'm doing my really happy dance today so we're really excited here in the studio too happy dancing oh it's laura laura is here with me actually recording and helping me out today to interview the founder ceo from do roddick we go to you got it took me a moment i'm sorry so it's a pretty exciting organization we're we're we're in our month of of spirituality so we are we're pretty excited to talk to a lot of people top they've starting off is and you know i've had a little chance to talk to her they are actually having a festival going on over there right now on the jewish holiday with process and we're going to ask you a little bit about that because that's amazing so i wanna learn a bit a little bit about that we're going to learn more about rata amazing website because it's really blending the religious aspect and the sexuality to create something that's really really sex positive yeah i'm i'm pretty interested to hear what they do and we have other things we're gonna talk about as well lots of things all the things that you wanna you wanna bring her in yeah that sounds good hey i oh are you there hey laura yeah hey monkey i'm here technology works because if listeners don't know is all the way over in in israel right now yeah sri that need as from jerusalem he should all come visit that's amazing so you said that there's a festival going on right now can you describe what this festival is a little bit this is the best time of year in israel it's called sue coat it's the harvest festival and if you imagine an entire country being block party mode that's what's going on we we literally we move out into huts and we live in them and everyone is just jamming music and dancing and strangers invite you into their like literal hut to break bread with them and eat and drink and be merry it's it's kind of awesome it sounds awesome the closest thing i could probably relate it to would be like burning man hearing states with the music and the huts in the french yeah i mean i would say like a little less nudity otherwise you know you see the similarity sure so kid i can you introduce yourself little i knew you've you've lived outside of jerusalem before i'll and maybe tell us a little bit about yourself in giralda dot org yeah for sure so i was born in raised on the east coast of the united states in new jersey in a very orthodox jewish community which means very religiously devout and gosh where to start where to focus i i don't know i was raised in a very conservative community passionate about my judaism my background is as a jewish educator but also as an educator on healthy relationships and sexually and growing up the extent of these sex education in the jewish framework that i was in was we would learn about something called mikva which is a jewish ritual bath which is to say there pretty much wasn't any education and as i ventured out into the world and studied human sexuality in university and things like that i realized that there was just a a profound lack of education and discussion and the religious community about six on and then conversely secular jews didn't think that judaism had anything to offer their release under sexuality of value and so there's a lots of kind of what you radical is in how it was founded but part of it was to create a bridge to kind of bring sex positivity back into judaism and to bring judaism back into the more secular sex positive world so that's kind of an interesting topic so i honestly will admit i don't know a ton about judaism so what what i mean i heard you say you didn't really have a lot of sex education but what is kind of the jewish perspective like in general from like a tradition bray point on sexuality or other gender related issues so great question laura and the best way to answer it i guess is this slogan that i quit for two radka which is i believe in original mitzvah and amid spot it's like a commandment as opposed to original sin so they're six hundred thirteen commandments in the bible and the very first one the original mitzvah is.
