"Selection simplified so what do they what is it that they say give me the top line laura gill did apple have a good quarter yeah yeah little little bit little bit revenue ninety one point eight billion far ahead of the expectations the market thought they'd get four bucks fifty four cents a sure they got four ninety nine share they got product revenue of seventy nine point one billion services up to twelve point seven billion that's been a nice steady increase every quarter overall income this is three months kids twenty two point two billion dollars they're going to almost eight billion dollars a month a lot to learn from this in fact i'm going to turn to jason snell on his great color charts love those charts he does them every every quarter i chart very telling quarterly revenue by category category that big blue wedge sixty one percent wedge iphone that's changed a lot because remember it went down to almost fifty fifty when the iphone took a big hit and everything else was up up and now there were no new ipads and except for the mac pro and the and the mac book pro they were known you max so the iphone back on topic but this was to be expected it's this quarter is the the holiday quarter where they announced new phones they sell a lot of them yes not a surprise services fourteen percent wearables eleven seven percent revenue you know it's very spiky as you can see you we're we're in that peak quarter but still the highest revenue is in in apple's history i think it is yep prophet also highest pretty much product company history yeah any any company yeah revenue revenue up nine percent in public iphone revenue up fifty six i mean to give you an idea google finally to reveal so the the rule with revealing income is if you would if you would tell if the CEO sees the line item you're supposed to tell shareholders and nari page never cared about how many how much apparently never cared about how much any of the alphabet companies made sense technically never saw it you didn't have to disclose it but sundar pichai is the detail person so for the first time we learned revenue of the constituent parts of alphabet and youtube is fifteen billion in ad percents oh wasn't that a thing yeah and that sounds like a lot but then you look at how much each of these apple units is making per quarter yeah yeah no youtube is not when i saw that number the first time i've ever seen a number youtube it was lower than i thought it'd be still a lot of money i mean i'll take it i'll take it even that it's it's just the you know the i mean the big cost for you obviously i mean there's lots of costs for you to the serb costs and and people cost and everything else but it's it's a oral noticing is the margins as apple moves to services the margins the gross in very big yet but the markings eggs are like double what compared to thirty yeah look at the growth on wearables home and accessories but i think this is apple watch right appalachia airbud doc let's not forget airports in fact maybe it's mostly our putz apple does not break down and apple watch series three and airports pro are still not apple's not audible to apply them to fit demand yet yeah so this is with constrained demand onto popular products year-over-year revenue changed thirty seven percent over last year not onto shabby although last year was fifty four percent growth forty eight percent the year before so year before quarter before year over year that's a year ago oh yeah but you're right it's quarter okay so that's confusing because that was released last airport or fifty four percent year over year growth last quarter i mean very confusing thank you for clarifying that yeah as you said mackin ipad not impressive lookout linear that growth is for services although didn't look a masonry say apple TV plus revenue is immaterial zamin immaterial laurie what does that mean well they they launched it in the middle of the quarter and it's free for almost everybody you know so i think right now they they a they're just not incorporating in or it's just there's not enough data to be reflective of the actual numbers and i think it was luca look at that was talking about how they're planning on sort of spreading out revenue for it over the next year it's going to be sort of like divided data amongst devices that device purchases because all of those people have actually they get that first year for free so they're sort of taking a little bit bit from the actual device sale itself in moving it into the service but there's a lot of unknowns to account for so i don't think we're really going to see the numbers that matter or that are really solid for a year from more than a year from its launch because of that that initial i shall freebie section of time like there's so many things as fewer people took the free than they expected bernstein had ten the percent i don't think apple said it it was oh okay so that was analysts but but that's so you have to take into consideration incineration some of that stuff so what he might have been saying that is ten percent of device purchases not necessarily ten percent of people who were qualified right devices this clearly exactly so that's something else that you have to consider his family sharing the only one of the subscriptions can be used with family sharing so that knocks down that sort of like device purchase spread out amongst services thing and there's also a lot of you know other countries where it's not available at all or it's available but it's the none of these shows are first language something other than welby one hundred percent of US buyers per person that are qualified for right yeah yeah yeah so services nevertheless very nice roll up seventeen percent that apple TV is in the services right it's TV plus is a service to the thing did they say how much they wanna spend because they spent what a billion last year netflix spent seventeen billion is apple going to up the ante they didn't say in the in the meeting in that earnings call when nobody else do too busy asking five g. questions that they knew tim wouldn't answer over and over again like three times some color on five next week one week from today in fact i should mention metric we we build a little bit late next week we're going to do the samsung event they're announcing their new samsung galaxy s. we think twenty i noted that all of the phones they're announcing our five g. and two thousand dollars and up and very expensive i don't want to five g. phone i can't get a five g. five g. chemo barely five jio you'll get subsidies he'll be fine if you like l. t. e. you'll be good i'm already in for sixty i'm just gonna now if you laugh about it now i know they're all it is a point because if you most people even people are spending a thousand dollars on a phone they're are not buying it to replace it again next year so if you want to try to get thousand bucks out of somebody you'd better be able to tell them that no this will not be useless two or three years even though it will probably be four or five years if that's ask the motive is going to be so bad like it's going to be like it's not the modem you want we're talking we're talking we're talking about salesmanship we're not talking about actual technology also i also remember that isn't it great that in twenty twenty it is now kind of expected that you will see the chicken the talk releases come in the same year well early you'll get you'll get the s twenty and we'll get the iphone twelve but then look at the iphone twelve junior edition in three or four months after we get after we bleed off the steam from everyone who's been leaned upgrade for the major one so we'll see we'll see also he's going to be so confusing because you're going to have the phones that do five g. as in sub six and you've got to figure out what your career supports and then the one in like three or four markets that have that different phone and i am a tree and you're gonna walk a tree and work and your and people are going to be so confused you're gonna buy it unlocked not gonna know where it's going to work it's wonderful i i it's gonna be an lt phone just enjoy it yes but thanks i have to pay more for it i may even have to get a five g. subscription which is more expensive i may get terrible battery life and i'm not getting anything better than i got but according to variety's in super bowl at it will help you the throttle services so you picked up on that i really was annoyed because verizon got a lot of heat a couple years ago because they they they they throttled firefighters during the wild they're still trying to dig out of that and so all of the rise in ads ever since featured emergency personnel using verizon phones yeah well that any mention of the real truth of them which is you don't want to throttle you these other areas is that any idea how to use five g. and the other issue is is will five g b where most of the fireworks mark and the chances are actually waiting so i was in the t mobile store and i thought well maybe i'll get myself a five g. phone this is co maybe a month ago they're selling you know the the two of them they have the the one plus mclaren edition and they have samsung said well this is exciting t. mobile i saw the map five g. lighting up everywhere to get here you know i can probably get into san francisco and again like sub can i can i get it he said you can get it in yucaipa which now alex and i know that's actually the well that's where the firefighting is going on you can get it in a tiny town in northern california point though but to go ahead go ahead and you just a topless point though they emergency services they they will bring a truck out to create a great point so they can connect to fi- g. or four g. wherever they want because you know the fire doesn't respect doesn't respect towers but yeah i actually had a chance to use real five g. for a few days in providence using alone phone and it really only as a sub optimal thing not not only just as you were saying i if you're if you're it's almost as though there as their footprints painted on the sidewalk saying stand right here and keep their keep the phone away from your body and then you will get like really good speeds but even when that does work the bat the battery suck is horrible you can actually feel feel the phone heating up in your hand and this wasn't during winter so that wasn't really a feature add it really is going to be like when he said that the first five g phones i i think for the first couple of years are going to stink and they're not going to be anywhere near worth the tradeoff for getting it whereas getting a finely tuned lt phone with chips that are designed to that are really well optimized for power dissipation it's i i wouldn't worry about buying a five g. phone fr- until two years from now maybe even three years from now which is it's good because apple will not have a fudgy from this year right they should i think it somehow they will yeah so they're working really hard with qualcomm like a flat out sprint and to try to get subjects five g. into a few markets for the september launch and then i still believe that em wave is going to be wimax it's not going to end up being a casino technologies you know where near useful for because he was but to get an m. a. because that's all that verizon when you say saga six six hundred megahertz frequency yeah so and my my colleague daniel annual bater had the most beautiful way of explaining it because people think it's not real five g. but what it does is basically lt is a myth for a large percentage of people in this world they never get anywhere near elti not ESPN they just hear about people in cities talking about it but subjects has a lot of doesn't have the speed of millimeter wave but has much more range and much more reliability and lower it can go through walls that's a good but the millimeter wave is such a high frequency of bounces off spit it bouncing day but what it means is that people people in rural and suburban areas who've never been able to get the full value out of lt they'll get the full value out of five g. yeah subjects confusing don't forget in our survey we'd love to get your thoughts about how we're doing and what you'd like to see next twit dot tv.

"All right back on the young Turks Limerick. Some comments for member station, I lo- forces. I know more Republicans jumping off the Trump train because I have not met a democrat. That is now a Trump follower me too. I see this single progressive or democratic go. You know, what I didn't believe in Trump? But he's really proven me wrong. Well, they would think that right? Trump is on Twitter all the time. And there's those hashtag exit things every once in a while. And he sees that he thinks oh, this is Representative reality. That all new Demings it or walkaway their whole propaganda paid for by right wing billionaires. It's hilarious. It's not remotely true. But Trump of Gore's an idiot. You're right. He probably sees that he's well we had walking away walking away to be true. Like, the funny thing is they've made it's meant to trick the average American but it accidentally tricks Trump instead. Than the average American by a long shot. Juliet writes, Trump associated Pelosi. He can't even give her a proper nickname. Maybe that's right. Lying. So I don't want her to mess me up again. Man. Look, I don't want to give it get into give credit on today. Okay. I can't help. But say I'm afraid she's gonna use that credit later to finding progressives. But still we have to be fair, and honest credit where credit is due or the neon. Donkey says the lives of the children in cages on the border are changed forever as well. Another good point, Laura Gill Zuma's writes in on Twitter, referring to Nancy Pelosi, otherwise known as Nancy. I think everybody should know that by now. Yeah, she's a lifelong professional politician. She knows how government works who the players are. And how to play them. He is so out of his league bigly. I think that's exactly right. Okay. "It just does not all the same capabilities yet yet yet. Maybe we'll see what they go. Maybe they'll, I hope, and this is a hard thing. It's like Photoshop is bloated. They should get rid of everything, but this, but everybody's. But this is different. Right? Yeah, definitely. And I think what you're saying of, it's the old dog new tricks kind of idea of, I know lots of people who consider other graphics design programs or other photo editing programs to be better. But they grew up learning Photoshop and they won't switch. They won't even try it because it's it's the, they need to do what they know how to do, and they can't. They can't afford the time. It takes to relearn a different program. So you know, it's Photoshop is here to stay as a matter of, you know, how can Photoshop, how can adobe kind of like a bring that into the mobile market for people. So. What I'm thinking is you know we're getting the new ipad were hopefully get into. I've had fro in a week in Photoshop for I Pat isn't expected until twenty nineteen, right. Yeah. So maybe the new ipad pro can't support full bloated Photoshop. It can't. So. I mean, that's the thing though is like just like the old drastic park thing like you spend so much time seeing if you could do it, you never thought you should do it or not. I really hope that they use ipad pro, you know, regardless of how ridiculously powerful that a twelve, God, eight, twelve x. It is not a twelve, ten apple, so confused me, can't even speak anymore that our dignity powerful. They've made it. I hope they don't ridiculously blowed. It just to do that, like lean mean in Hungary and then make all your different apps for it if you have to. Yeah, I think that would be nice. I think that it would be a poor user experience even if it would satisfy people who want full. Oh Photoshop on I, it would be bad experience for them and then they would complain about that. So sometimes you have to, you know, make your kid eat vegetables even though they don't like vegetables. Totally true, Laura Gill. It is. The show was a delight. I was worried that without mica and Georgia being ridiculously charming, charismatic and giggly. We would have a hard time getting through their show, but I had a blast and it to, let's kick them off. That's no way. No. Off, I, I think is what will happen. They would. The two of them alone would definitely be a better show than the two of us alone. Their way more charismatic that we are. We did our best. We did our. We tried to draw some science on next week. I'm gonna. I'm gonna put you on on the spot Haruna next week. You have designs to wear some costumes, and I don't wanna see you without a costume next week. So I have a long and illustrious history of Gumby dammit on this show. So I think you have to bring your game Lori Gill. I last year, didn't you dress as your Pokemon go? Avatar? I don't know. That would. I think because I forgot it was a Halloween show, and I desperately tried to come up with some thin veneer of a costume that we'll see it will. So if you phoned it unless you're, I think that you did a good job of phoning in because I think I remember you were wearing the the, it's a, it was a crocheted version of the. Oh, that's right. Yeah. The. Imagine car Pat. Yeah, and that is exactly what you're retire was wearing. You know, I thought it worked. I thought it was a great phone in Halloween, costume juicier after the goddamn Batman or something. Yes. Oh, good. All right. A good out. It's been a great hour or so. Laura Gill people if they're not if they did not have enough of you, if this was just a like a small dose and they want the full effect, where can they go? They can find me writing my little heart out about all things. Apple on I mar, I'm more dot com. "It's like the move the power button to the top of the iphone, but leave it on the side on the ipad just so that you always hit the volume before you hit the. It's just one thing after another with them. And you think you think you're finally going to have unified design language like the ipad ipod, touch, went to the new, went to the previous design, and then the ipod, the ipad mini, and then the either regular ipad. And then the phones look like they were gonna and then the new iphone comes out and everything's different again. And then the wash fall, they could just be like, oh, you think everything's going to be unified, not they'll do the next generation of design language. Yeah. And this phone, the newest ipad. If there's if there's any time to completely change the design of it, it's when they're going to completely change the size of it. So why not go crazy and do something completely different. Definitely look forward to that. I'm excited. So what about face? Ide- on. I. Yes, there will be face I e, but because they're not going to get rid of the vessels because you have to hold the ipad differently than a phone. They'll be enough room to have the true depth array without having to make an arch. Question is, do they get rid of the three point, five millimeter headphone Jack, just to just to be a jerk about it because Google is putting out the pixel slate. They got rid of Jack and previous previous boss of mind, eater bowl, and now at the verge was asking about it and they're like, well, phones did it. So. It'd be Apple's response or they're going to say courage. I mean, well, so just like you're saying the design team throws us for a loop every single time. So. Drugs. If you follow that train of thought, they're going to keep the iphone Jag just mess with us. But since they since they got rid of the three point, five millimeter, Jack on the iphone and a lot of people that I knew were complaining about that in what you know, what a bad idea that was, I knew right than in there that the reason they did that is that we were moving to digital music, and we were using analog headphones, listens to digital music. And what they were doing is they were upgrading the cable that you plug into the phone to a digital signal so that you're getting that cleared digital signal and that makes the most sense in a digital world. So that being said, upgrading the ipad pro or any of the ipad line to no three point, five millimeter, Jack makes so much sense because they are they're, they're getting rid of that analog ideology that were, you know, we were using with tapes and and record players and. They're saying, you know, we're all digital now. So get your digital headphones out this. This makes the most sense going forward. I think at this point so much is now non three point, five millimeter that most people are going to be much more willing to accept that than they were before. And there's only a a handful of situations under which you would need to use your headphones when using your ipad, like watching movies or TV shows, or you know, dealing with the musical recordings in in one way or another, whether you're listening to music or actually, you know, programming in music or or recording with your ipad or something like that. So the average person is significantly less likely to be using headphones with their ipad than they would with their iphones. So the transition, I think makes a lot of sense if they're gonna do that this year. Yeah. I mean, I love this time of year, like you said, because and this, this kind of season where we are transitioning where some products have clearly made the leap to things like Nobels and others are on the verge, and we get sort of imagine like, will they won't? They will. They won't. They, it's sort of like watching the bachelor for products Tomase. I was friends. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah. Well, they were on a break. "It's not out yet, but I think it's coming late October or early November. So even just get the zip too, and it comes with their play to domestically. Good choice. Thank you Laura Gill. Thank you for being here too. We really appreciate him time out from your busy day. Alex. Lindsay also has a busy day, but I bet he has a pick of the week as well. I do. So one of the things I found myself using a lot and I couldn't believe that I hadn't recommended, but did the little search on MB w picks and. Have you used taste, sue, sweet taste? You sketches? I can't. I don't know, saying correctly sui tostadas sui. So is that. No, I never heard of it. It's a great little sketch, you know, it's great sketch app, it's it's available on the MAC. It's also billable on the ipad, and I realized this is what I'm using most of the time. So I have, I have the pro version and I, if I'm sketching something out that I actually wanted to look like something. You know, this is what I end up kind of pulling out. And I just find that the the simplicity as well as the tools. You know, a really nice. There's lots of great drawing tools on the ipad. It's kind of an amazing environment for for sketching, but I find this one. There's something about it that is just the right mix of clean and complexity that that I that I definitely enjoy when I'm when I'm putting together concepts, concept ideas for whatever we're working on. Mine is less artistic, probably more detailed around trying to just visualize something that I need someone else to make a better version of. So, but but I realized that I just that this is one that I was using. I, I had a recommended because I've been using it for years now. I think so anyway, it's a really good sketch app if you're still not happy with the ones that you already have and it's, I don't think I don't think they're expensive to buy, but the pro and not only the pro is that expensive. I, I'm looking at. Set up. I guess you buy set up and you get a bunch of other apps including a sui. Is there are there other ways to get tired sui without doing? Yeah, I just bought it. I primarily on my ipad. I just bought it in the app store. I just did that though. This is with, yeah, that's the, there's a, there's an app for the for the MAC as well. So I think that might be what that is, but the but you can just buy it as a as an app on the on the stores. Well, nice. Sorry, could I have set up in? It's actually pretty amazing. Just wanted to point that basically it's like net flicks for apps on your max. It's pretty awesome or shook it out. Tai sui tire sui t. a. y. a. s. u. i. dot com has a bunch of other stuff, including doodle book, Tulsa sketches, sketches, MAC, tai-soo, color. So their bunch of different apps and you can find them all, but you're recommending sketches. What are you recommend? Sketches? Yeah, this is the one that I use a lot now that I see that there's a bunch of other ones I'm like, I probably should have looked at those two, but but I, yeah, I, that's the one I use and it's actually the one. My my daughter uses a lot as well. She's got it on her ipad. She, she was the one that she's catches a lot onto ferry. Nice. I wish I could draw. Maybe I could have had a pet grow and. Anyone can draw. It's just being a troll. Well, it's. No, it's it's..

"Is Thursday, August second, twenty eighteen. I'm Mike sergeant in right now, we are going to talk about changes coming to the apple affiliate program apple earnings, which are per usual, just bonkers. And we're gonna answer some questions as well because this is the more show. I want to start today with a bit of a PSA. Please do be looking around as you're driving and walking out there because they're certainly must be pigs flying. We are not joined this week by Laurie Gill, the steadfast and ever true host of the Morsch. Oh, and so I just, yeah, I just think you should watch out for flying pigs out there because they must be out in about, but I am happy to say that I am joined across the internet and across the border by the wonderful Canadian pal of mine who just had a birthday Rene Ritchie. Thank you for being here today. Oh, thank you for having me Mike. Sorry, I feel like we're drifting drift compatible. Like we're co piloting kaija. I'm Mark. I love it. I love it. I think that's exactly what's going on. Yeah, we're, we're linked in. We're sinked in and we are going to rock. It meant of course, Yeager I am more this. There's no way I'm Mike and I would be on the team. Yeah, come on. We're better than that. So let's go ahead. True that Laura Gill loves us, but she loves Disneyland. Just slightly more. Oh, I see. I don't even think it slightly and I think that if she were here, she would very easily very happily say like, y'all are great, but Disneyland for she loves Disneyland. I mean, I think I talked about it might have been with a meeting with all of us, but I am pretty sure that if anyone is getting close to gaining citizenship to that park. It's her. She's definitely going to have one. Yeah. Well, I hope you're enjoying Laura Gill. You certainly earned it. Yes, yes, you us. Yes, have fun for us. We're gonna talk about sad things now. So this kind of came out of the blue. Rene, I'd love obviously, and I think many people out there would love to hear your take. You've been doing this for a bit longer and you have run the route. The roller coaster that. The ups and downs, and all of those things the three sixty backflip gainers you've done it. All apple just announced that they are going to end the affiliate program for apps. Is this correct? Yes. Apps, right. Just apps. If you affiliate linked, TV, shows, movies, books, music, you are still fine. You will still get your commission your little Pat on the shoulder for making that referral link. But if you.

"It is July twentieth twenty eighteen. I'm Mike sergeant. And right now we are going to talk about changes that I'm more iphone customers doing a pretty good job of spending money. The keyboards on the new MAC book froze gorilla glass so much more and we also have a special guest. But before we get there, I have to tell you that this is the show. Joining me, yes, there it is. Joining me this week is Laura Gill. The house Jameson first of her name, the unfazed Queen of the MAC, and the first big cat Gill of the great Golden State breaker of mic stands and mother of dragons. Laurie. I'm so glad. I finally got to say that on the more show, how are you doing? I'm so good. Thank you very much. Mike. I just wanna say, so this happened two and a half years ago. We were all just kind of making jokes about how to identify each other. And somehow Mike came across this great way to name me, which is everything that he just said. I thought it was so funny. I made it text editor, text expanders for it so that anytime I wanted to say my name, that's how it used it. And we've been using it ever since then. It's been really funny. Yes, I'm surprised you're able to recite that. So, well. Yes, one of these days, I think we'll all have it memorized. But until that time, by the way that voice you just heard is our.

"The land's end which is the same game company that made monument valley got i'm glad i remembered that i love the monument valley that's a great game it's another puzzle game but you're actually in vr doing it so it's much more immersive i found myself getting just a tiny bit motion sick from that particular win so i only do it about ten or fifteen minutes at a time i've also missed around with the plex app which is fantastic in vr on your back and watch tv yeah you can you can lie in your bag it can sit on the couch you can yeah you can be anywhere your your significant other can be watching when movie on netflix on the big screen and you can be watching another movie in hulu on your tiny version of a big screen tap a lot in the laura gill no usually i'm playing video games what what's cool about vr movie watching is it's you really do feel like you're watching the big screen even win it's just this tiny little thing that's right in front of your eyes freaks get a sense of scale that that doesn't fit with the reality but your brain is processing it as your as a very big screen tv that you're watching citizens really fun experience a higher resolution in the rift so you should that solution it's gotta lower frame rate but a higher resolution so you're but but it's a much higher resolution that goes much higher resolution than netflix or or plex so you're seeing so you'll see it's fine door at all like can you see the pixel glory there there is a little bit of that it's usually just around the peripheral okay so for me being new to vr i'm still learning how to not look up like this but to actually look up like this.

"But they you know they're typing with their friends and they're they're going back and forth and they're moving over and they're working together and putting all these things together and and it's just it and i it my understanding is it is they that that eight to twelve is kind of the age range that most of the kids that are playing so it's not none of it's really there for for you know the play when they're older but but man it's a it's it's an addictive morning if you're a parent it's very addictive game for the kids and so i've had to start pulling them back a little bit pulling away but it it if you're if you're trying to look at something over think of what the next thing is i had never heard of it and i didn't quite understand it but it is it is it feels like a take off from mine mine crap but then they did a lot more and there's just tons of interactivity and they're talking to you know they're interacting with lots of folks and it's a little bit more graphic than than minecraft as you can see so but people my my kids are you know they just love it so i thought you know that's the that's the it really comes from my kids i don't understand it at all awesome awesome laura gill how about you what do you have for us this week so my pick this week is the prince estate last week uploaded a video of a studio recording of prince singing the song that he wrote nothing compares to you which was later made popular by nato connor you can watch this five minute video on youtube and listen to the original recording the video the footage that they're showing is different than the song they're not they're not linked together but what's so incredible about it when you watch this video is how professional prince and the revolution are when it comes to practicing and rehearsing.
