The top story we're following tempers flared, and they were accusations of a cover up after the loudoun county school board voted against releasing to the public and independent report of how the school system handled two sexual assault assaults against students. A majority of the school board voted yesterday to keep the report under wraps, citing attorney client privilege and student privacy. Some parents have been calling on the board to release the report for months saying they want to details on what school leaders knew and when calls to release the findings came after a separate grand jury report found school leaders were generally incompetent in responding to the assaults, one student was accused of two sexual assaults at two different schools. The teenage boy was later convicted in juvenile court in order to stay in a treatment facility until he turns 18. Now, former Latin school superintendent Scott ziegler and school spokesman wade bayard were both indicted by that special grand jury. Now, one of the defendants is worried he won't get a fair trial. It's a story you're hearing first on WTO. Governor Glenn youngkin and attorney general Jason Millar's have tainted the entire jury pool, according to wade bayard's lawyer, attorney Jennifer loeffler writes that the governor and AG have often referred to loud and residents as being victims of a cover up and that their children were in danger. Since bayard is the school spokesman, that suggests he personally failed to inform parents of the alleged assaults. She says Virginia law insists that jurors not have a stake in the case they're hearing, she's filed a change of venue motion asking bayard's case be tried in fairfax county. And in an interview with WTO, attorney general Jason Millar's is defending the probe you can read more about it at WTO P dot com. At Michigan state university we're learning more about the three students who were killed in Monday's mass shooting. Police identified those killed as junior Ariel Anderson, an aspiring pediatrician. Sophomore, Brian Fraser, president of his fraternity, and junior Alexandria Werner, an athlete whose positivity changed lives. Campus police say the gunman had no affiliation with the university and they're still looking for a motive. Authorities say 43 year old Anthony McRae began his rampage at berkey hall, killing two and injuring several others. He then went to the student union, killing one more. McRae later died of a self inflicted gunshot wound during a confrontation with police. That is CBS News correspondent Erica moche in east Lansing in addition to those killed 5 others were critically wounded in the mass shooting. A 19 year old white supremacist is said to be sentenced to life in prison today for killing ten black people and a buffalo supermarket last year. It was an attack fueled by racist conspiracy theories that the shooter found online. Peyton rather pleaded guilty in November to charges, including murder and domestic terrorism motivated by hate, the terrorists of charge carries an automatic life sentence, gendron wore bullet resistant armor and a helmet equipped with a live streaming camera during that attack on May 14th. He used a semi-automatic rifle that was bought legally, but then modified it so he could load it with high capacity magazines which are illegal in New York. Rare and in some cases never before publicly seen video of a dive through the wreckage of the Titanic as being released today. You can see it on the Woods hole oceanographic institution YouTube channel. There's more than 80 minutes of footage of the dive in 1986, which marks marked the first time human eyes had seen the giant ocean liner since it sank in 1912. The released footage is in conjunction with the 25th anniversary release of the remastered version of the Academy Award winning movie, Titanic. And I will be looking up that footage when I get off the air, I definitely want to see that. Yeah, I want to see it too. And I saw the movie again over the weekend. In 3D for some reason, it didn't really seem to add anything to the experience, but you know, I guess it's a novelty. But you enjoyed it. I did. I didn't think I would, but I did. "The sad news announced just a short time ago. The Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 96, her family rushed to her side today. We get more now from special report. today at the age of 96 are passing comes just hours after a rare and somewhat detailed statement this morning from Buckingham Palace, saying she had been placed under medical supervision because doctors were quote concerned for her majesty's health. The country's last real glimpse of Queen Elizabeth was at the platinum jubilee celebrations in June, marking her 70 years on the throne. I'm going to be easy. Boston's NewsRadio. Well, Good evening, everyone and welcome on in. Thank you. Nicole. It is Monday, September 13th. Tomorrow's a big day in the city of Boston. We are going to be joined in a moment by someone who is very interested in the result yesterday as I think all of us Julia, My name is Dan Ray. I'm the host of nights I've been off for about a week. Want to thank The folks were kind enough to fill in for me last week, Morgan White on Monday and Friday, as I think you were. You will remember Jordan Rich on Wednesday and Thursday and Ben Parker on Tuesday. So I really want to thank Those gentlemen for taking the time to give me the opportunity to spend a little bit of time. A little bit of time on vacation. I'll explain later on, Um why, um Uh, why I was had to be off last week. We'll get back to that later on. I don't want to in any way, shape or form detract from the time that we're going to spend with our next guest. It's my pleasure to welcome To the show, the mayor of Boston, and we did many programs with Mayor Marty Walsh over the last six or seven years and delighted tonight to have with us the mayor of Boston. Kim. Janey Mayor Kim Janey Mayor. Janey, I don't think we've ever had the pleasure of Talking before, but welcome. Welcome tonight side. How are you? Thanks so much. I am great. And I'm so glad that you were able to get a vacation. That is something, uh, that I have not had in quite some time. Well, and I'm sure well spent and very relaxing and reinvigorating. Oh, it was absolutely that and more. Um, my daughter. Went off to a new job across the country and San Francisco so had to be there to help along the way. That's wonderful. That's wonderful. As a as I'm sure you would. You would. You would understand that is for sure. Well, anyway, um, you have a very big day coming up tomorrow and I know that you don't want to vacation. You've worked very hard. No position acting there want to make that very clear. Uh, I know some people have used the phrase acting Mayor. I think that you're the mayor of Boston. Uh And I suspect you would agree with me on that so we will. We will assume that, um Uh, I also want to mention we have something in common. Your father and I went to Boston Latin school at around the same time. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Wonderful. He graduated in 1964. When? When did you go? I was a couple of years later, so I knew of him as an older classmate. Um, uh, And obviously, he went on to have a great career in education. Uh, I might answer did Yes, he did. He did indeed, and he was the great scholar at Boston Latin School and went on to Northeastern University in Boston University. And then went into education. Yes, as a schoolteacher here in our public schools, he started his career as a reading teacher at the Bancroft School in the South end. And then went on to be, uh, you know, within the Boston public school district principal and a headmaster, he was an area superintendent. And before he left BPS. He was the chief academic officer, and he left to become superintendent of Rochester, followed by Washington, D. C and then Newark, New Jersey. Yeah, quite a career in education. Uh, I'm sure that you are, you know very proud of him, And I know that you have a great deal of interest in education. Uh, you You yourself grew up. Uh, as your biography mentions, Um, at a tough time in Boston that second wave of Busing back back in the day in the in the in the late seventies. You of course, grew up in Roxbury, but you lived. Um you went to school. You grew up and lived in Roxbury. But you ended up spending a lot of time. In another part of the city in Charlestown, So you really began to get to know the city at a fairly young age, correct. Yes, Yes, And I also spent a lot of times in the south end. In fact, when I was being bussed to Charles Town, it was from the South End. My great grandparents had a brownstone. In the South end. And so I spent a lot of my childhood there as well. And as you mentioned yes, was bust during the battle to desegregate Boston Public school. Was a very difficult time in our city. Uh, you know, a lot of Children were not getting a good quality education. There was a lot of racial strikes in our city. There were often police escorts for our buses. Of rocks and racial slurs being thrown at us. As we were just trying to go to school. Um and we've come along way in our city. But our schools still need a lot of work. Obviously, they're much better than they were back in the 19 seventies. There's been a lot of improvement, but in many ways At the quality that parents seeking, uh, you know, it still feels like a lottery for for many parents when they are applying for Boston, public schools and our schools, unfortunately, are still largely segregated by race. Yeah, that's that's that's work to do. Yes, that's one of the statistics that strike me. Um maybe it's a different type of segregation. But What percentage they're about. 50,000. The number I hear is 50,000 students in Boston. What percentage of those students in the Boston public schools on minority these days? I've heard figures as high as 89%. Yeah. The vast majority of students are students of color in BPS. That is true. And, you know, I think the segregation may be a little different As you mentioned. I think there's some social economic Segregation that happened, uh, as well and again. There's a correlation there and terms of, uh, race. There's you know, often, uh, you know certain neighborhoods of certain community. And not only our school, largely Children of color. Um they are largely Children who live and poor communities. Um, we have Uh, a number of our students as well, who are students with disabilities about offense? We've got a number of our students who are English language learners. Um, we have, uh, very diverse population of students in terms of language and culture and not just raised And so more than half of the kids Who attend VPs living home. We're English is the second language where there's a primary language other than English. How How are we doing as a city and again? I realized that you know you have served as mayor. Only for you know, six or so months. You probably know that months and you believe it number of days, whatever. But how are we doing in terms of the percentage of students in the Boston public schools? Not that this is the only Um, really, the only way by which we should judge we should judge success. But what percentage of the students who are in the public school system graduating? And what percentage are going on either to a two year or four year college and I know the reason I asked that question is, I know that you are very concerned about perhaps expanding trade, schools and technical schools and vocational training. Even though you went to a great college Smith College, and a lot of our listeners went to college College isn't for everyone necessarily. But what if the numbers in terms of kids in the Boston public schools are actually going on to either two or four year college and graduating on time? Well, you know, not enough of them. If that is the path that they want their there so that the graduation rate has increased, Um over time, which is great. So students are graduating. More and more students are graduating from high school. But those who go on to college um you know it is taking longer. To graduate with cost more money, and then not enough to so many might go on, but not finish, and it costs money. And when we think about other opportunities, we want to think about those opportunities as great opportunities, not In the context that not everyone is meant for college like college is a great choice. If that is what you desire, but it is. It is now becoming more and more difficult, uh, for our students to go to college, and it's not so much Whether or not uh they are able to compete academically as it is. Um, you know, the cost of college and so on the one hand, we've got to do more to make sure that our students are prepared for college that they're able to go on to school without having to take a bunch of remedial. Of course, is But we also need to make sure that college is affordable and we've got A number of students who go on to college, maybe graduate with tens of thousands or.

"Themselves. You know and so they were asking for some work in some engagement. i mean they. They have working engagement but that they enjoy. And that's showing up now For them so I love that love that and dabbed the guests in the that come on you know twice at once a month away they come on but they are also wanting to a. Yeah but we. You know the for the three months at the moment. That's the way it's going because it's nice to have that sort of tribe you know people who actually have witnessed you and seeing you go through a transition and and to have that intimacy Sort of with with yourself. And so i invite people to really Connect with them selves step in to their life step up and step out and share their genius with the world. And that's what they're doing and we'll see cossio used the word dancing a lot. You use it as a metaphor you used it in your book dancing with riches tell us what dancing means to you and saying to me means being connected with your rhythm and no matter what the music is no matter what. The dance floor is no matter who the partner is if there is. There isn't one the dances always yours. The music may change. The party may change the dance when they change the. When you are connected with your vibe your rhythm then you are recognizing what the riches are in your life and you are willing to engage with them. And if it's a waltz or tango or if it is just a guide then you begin enjoying the rhythm of the riches in your life and so that's what dancing with riches is about and. Why did you decide to write that book. You know i was I was writing a book called dancing with riches years ago. And it was about communicating with you and then pull the seven steps to flow is communication popped up and it was a really small book. This book was like you know. And so i chose to write this book because i wanted to. Share with people have lived in three countries. I speak several languages. I engage with people multicultural. People around the world. I have The reaches that this planet is you know that the many colors in cultures and languages you know people choose maybe religions and and things but if we're not excluding anything or anyone in we have such a wealth of accessability To really rich cultures and food and an an tastes and smells and visual aspects. And if we are willing to live our lives not just exist and survive but thrive than even if we're sitting in our home thanks to technology like i'm seeing you now and hearing you and talking with you Then that enriches us and and it ignites our capacity really To fly yeah next book dancing with riches and then flying with the birds are okay dancing and then flying. Yeah yeah yes you did you. Did you have a story about bullying casts where mine would've added difference. Yes i love that. I just wanted to say that. So i talk about actually. A lot of my experiences about relationship with self relationship with your body have had a lot of experiences with bodies in my body. So i share my stories relationship with other people to marriages and you know one still going. Who knows. it's been only only been twenty two years but who knows you know might shake. It seems working for me Relationship with money relationship with business just all those areas and how you can utilize the tools of access to create more in each and every one of those areas in your life. So that's what that is a about and You know bruce. I have experienced bullying. I've probably experienced some of the things that we even call sexual abuse however i didn't recognize it as that like converting the negative into the positive Because i was very clear about what i desired to get out of the situation and it was always me. You know because if i am able to connect with me and to not diminish myself that'll be a contribution to the world so even in the first grade I was bullied by these two girls. You know and they Yeah they would make me walk though all. Walk them home to and go around. I didn't really I didn't really know that it was. My house was so much closer. You know i see and And i was bullied in In my first year of high school. Emma to the oldest public high school in in the us at boston latin school. I was bullied by these girls. You know i was a bit And they would pretend to you. Know they bump into me and push me and i wasn't willing to be diminished. I tried so hard to pretend. I didn't notice it. I tried so hard to be really kind to them right. But i wasn't willing to be part of their Their crowd either and because they weren't kind and a lotta times with bullying and we talk about this also in acts as a lot of times with bullying if they take you into their group then you star bullying people as well you know. This was not what i was choosing so i was amazing student in in high school and I stopped them. i stopped him from bullying. Might my sisters boyfriend at the time was a black belt in karate. Kid is to him. How do this. How do i stop them. Is i think they're going to beat me up. You know and so he said you have to be willing to push them back.

"Like a small town. Sometimes and it might feel that way to you when i tell you about my family connections to two of the black women who are running for mayor of boston right now. That's next. Boston is a major american city but for some of us that can feel like a small town. After boston's acting mayor kim janey appeared on this program in april. My cousin holland o'donnell told me that her father my cousin. Kirk o'donnell was co captain of his high school. Football team with kim giannis father cliff janey in nineteen sixty four at america's oldest public school boston. Latin school city councilor andrea. Campbell is running for mayor against kim johnny in a field of front running candidates that for the first time in boston history does not include a white man. My father knew andrea campbell's grandfather. He loved the man. And my father made history with andrea. campbell's father. alvin the campbell. April twenty fifth nineteen sixty. Three was a good time to be an irish bostonian in washington. Dc with john. Kennedy's still in the white house. And our local congressman. John mccormack as speaker of the house. But it a terrible time to be a black defendant. In any american court andrea campbell's father was in federal prison that day doing twenty-five years for bank robbery and my father was in washington that day to get him out of prison. It was my first day in washington. I was eleven years old. My father had gone from being a boston. Police officer to a lawyer and i sat in the front row of the united states supreme court that day watching him. Try to convince chief. Justice earl warren and the rest of the court that the fbi manipulated the eyewitness testimony in alvin campbell's trial. Who is the second time.
