"Still puts a very strong argument that you would still have him in here in the starting two. He's a crooked problem. Yes. He could. I think it's interesting as well. They had a great run. He had a great charge. Maybe you have a great race because he inter retirement on the spot. But I think that's interesting in his own way, because he was also voted driver of the day. Let's be honest, what was a pretty boring right? Other than his component of it. How many drivers could have done that? It was a great last scene, you know, beat oak on by more than ten seconds with the penalty meant nothing. How many drivers could have punted off another driver on their way up? On tires that were also clearly faster than everyone else's. To take nothing away from Ricciardo, it was a great strategy that no one else figured out as well. That helped. How many other drivers could have in the aftermath had no one even ask him about have no one care about why you use another things, not mention the penalty. Like how many other drivers could have done that? Very, very few. Again, the bank of Riccardo has an extraordinary. Despite the fact that the man is in egregious debt. Of poor performances. Yes, you can have another loan. We still value you as a customer. If we want to use that analogy. So yeah, it's remarkable that everyone lords and he gets driver of the day despite the fact he crashed into someone, whereas if it was Nicholas Latifi, let's be honest, a double standard here. If it was Nicholas, they'd be sort of not very nice commentary about it. And yeah, and then he would then say if he would not also talk to Sky Sports F one. But because he's the people's driver, I'm like Princess Diana. Hannah. He gets it easier ride. Books of neutrals. Let's check in with formula mcginley, the F one fantasy competition run at the F one fancy website, four box of neutrals, which you can join if you go to box of neutrals dot com. "And I said, is this sort of comfort that you're back in the fight and spa was such a sort of anomaly in your form? And he said the car it's like it's got mood swings. I guess out of the bed one side of the morning and it's right and other times it's wrong so yeah definitely well that makes me a Mercedes W 13 then. Oh no I wouldn't I wouldn't go that far no no no you're far more successful than the same person let's face it. I'm sorry Mercedes. Definitely looking really interesting at the front of the pack. I think a lot will come down to how the fight does play out and how easy overtaking is. Finally though, let's get on to as we touched on earlier, the flare that was thrown onto the track at the start of Q two and caused a red flag. Now we've seen these flares a number of races this season we've seen fans let them off and the orange smoke piling across the track I think it's safe to say they're not McLaren fans, they're not diesel rankin fans and it is something that drivers have noted and even talks about in the drivers briefing saying that we've got the smoke coming across the track. It was an issue here last year when max one and the other drivers were trying to finish their race and they had all this smoke coming up. But today it crossed a line. Now, fan behavior this week, and I think after all that happened in Austria, was always going to be in the spotlight. It was always going to be a question. And they've not been not seen to be any issues until now, how moronic do you have to be to throw a flare onto the track and the live Formula One session? Yeah, I mean, it's done on so many levels. I mean, you could make the argument that if something's thrown from a grandstand and it drops behind the fence, then rolls onto the track. That's unfortunate, but also we just gone through one of the dry European summers. These things could easily set fire. What are you doing? And there is a ban in place, the circuit doesn't want them here, but their security staff aren't doing good enough job if all these flares are getting in. They wouldn't let me bring in a can of popular energy drink that I felt I might have needed when it came to putting together the Friday of each photo split dot com plus yesterday evening. As you got about it in the end, such was my fervor of getting the feature in on time, so we can make the last bar sign. But anyway, I digress. Then he's been doing a better job of doing that. And the fans surely you can self police that, you know, why are people chucking these flares? I personally don't even know why they're even lighting them in the first place. If I've paid hundreds of pounds for a ticket and someone next to me or in the row in front of me set off a massive flare in my face and as we saw at the Red Bull ring, it cost me the view of my view of the start of the Grand Prix. I'd be at the absolutely I really nearly swore there, but anyway. Absolutely livid. As you mentioned, the drivers, it's dangerous for them even without them being on the track. Nicholas Latifi and I spoke to him in the pen leak was saying that these were being lit at spa as well. And at some point, the drivers, I don't know if that's smoke or sort of gravel dust from a car going off ahead of me, and there's no yellow flag. So that in itself is a safety issue. Carlos Sainz said in the press conference, you know, can we just let the organize can you organize is just tell them to let them off at a set time where I think the organizers view is just don't set them off. At all, but I imagine if Verstappen wins tomorrow lots and lots of people will set them off after the checkered flag. But as you said, that created its own problem. Last year, and I think drivers definitely don't want it happening on lap one this time. But yeah, there's also quite a sort of sinister element to this actually in terms of total wolf was saying in his media session, which is that there was actually a second flare that was chucked at the end of the pit exit. Now it didn't actually make it onto the track, but you could the TV cameras picked up the smoke coming through the barriers. The suggestion from I presume it's coming from Mercedes Benz because this is the way the question was worded towards taito and his media session is that it was chucked as Hamilton was driving down the pit lane, which is just, which is just awful. Many thoughtful stuff that these things are being chucked if it's been targeted at a driver, like that's just even more appalling. So yeah, don't do it. Don't bring them. I mean, I'm sure if you're desperate to light a flare, you can find a time and a place to do it, but away from the sporting event, don't ruin it for other people. And yeah, just hopefully this event will go off without hitch tomorrow. It is absolutely fantastic. My first time as anvil and I had the same for you, Luke is a tremendous place. Amsterdam is a tremendous city. Everybody here is absolutely lovely. So yeah, fingers crossed it will be an exciting way tomorrow and have none of the stupidity that it did let's face it mar today. I think Verstappen was very eloquent in what he said asked in the question the press conference. And I kind of tried to word it carefully because I didn't want it to look like, you know, I don't know, you just worry about what's the sort of always easy thing he's going to be picked on blah blah blah. Well, there are orange smoke

"It's not, you know, the things are told to sort of stay clear away from leading things on his tyres and try to limit it because they're not sexy topics. And it's interesting to see how this played out because Perez, as you remember from Austria, had his best lap in QT, it was accepted. He went into Q three, but then it was scrubbed and deleted, and then that denied gasly a chance. It comes in the context of this actually entering a pretty difficult form run a form for a press. You know, he's regressed almost into that. And it sounds harsh, but that gasly houring thing of being sort of 6 and 7th rather than third or fourth, which is a tussock requirement for that second Red Bull seat. Maybe my voice isn't as good as I thought it was. It's starting to go a bit then. But he's regressed a little bit. And then he was struggling. He's been struggling way off his teammate in free practice. And then again, that that lap he was at risk in Q one, and then was eliminated in Q two, and it was in pits at the time, actually, because he was actually the interesting thing to note is about the policing of track limits. Obviously, the FYI have caught it this time and over time that. But I noticed that I'm really sorry. This is really sad. It took them 6 minutes and 31 seconds. So that's 7 minutes if you're rounding just that take the 7 minutes to correct it, and that's a big, that's a big interval. You know, it's like when I used to cover four marine, you get late at night and then they change classification. I think that's actually happening right now in formally as well. Brilliant. And it robs you in the moment what you're watching and it's frustrating. And we were told that as part of the legacy of the Abu Dhabi thing, we'd have this control room, miss VA, our equivalent, and we're told it's up and running in Geneva. We know very little about it, but we're sure it's there. And what we're told is it's not about stopping the race in the middle, obviously that's impossible. We're stopping qualifying session in the middle. It's about giving an extra data stream. And yes, it has been identified and the correct result has come, but it's taken too long to identify. And it looks silly because it's not like where you need Hawkeye or goal line technology for a perfect top down view. I think we could see from the replays, not even slow motion ones out here is really in track limit. So it's just a bit, you know, it's when we complain about the bad Wi-Fi or bad car parks or whatever that can't get stuck. And this is the best of motor sport. It's a top flight and it's missing those key areas and it looks a bit poor. Finally, let's get on to one of the weirder stories of today with all due respect, but that is Nicholas Latifi, who was quickest in FP three. P one for Williams, and at the time, it actually topped more sessions this year than Lewis Hamilton had. Amazingly, which was a stat that one of our media colleagues tweeted out and then unsurprisingly had a little bit of backlash a little about, but it was a weird day for the team. Because he went from P one in FP three, then as you alluded to earlier in Q one set a purple first sector and we were like, here we go again, last. Here we go. And then ended up last. So you went from first to last in the space of a few hours, a strange old day for him. Yeah, I want to sort of give him a bit of love at the end of this podcast because there were cheers in the media center for it. Ironic chairs and then this goat Latifi or goatee sort of mean it comes off Facebook and like yes, we know originally why he was signed and he has definitely been a number two driver against Russell and now album, but he's still a Formula One driver and he can do a job. So it feels a bit harsh. Let's talk him up while he's in the limelight, but potentially with him not being here next season. So yeah, as you say, he was purple in sector one in final practice and in Q one as well. So it was like a carrier. And that was obviously still let's call it damp or something greasy in final practice but quicken but dry sorry in Q one. So the pace carried over. And he's generally he's in a good run of form at the minute. So if you remember Silverstone, he didn't have the upgrade package, but he took a marked improvement. And then at Paul Ricard, he was battling ranks and I think it was 12 to the time when it was, yes, it was a clumsy collision. And this comes after they won't say specifically that was a crack chassis or something, but there's been a change of chassis on the car. And since then there has been this uptown, it's generally up to as much as half a second, three quarters of a second, improvement every lap, really. And consistency coming with that. And that's putting in much closer to Alban. So he's not the meme or whatever, the joke and it grid that he's being made out to be. So that is one thing. However, the FW 44 and we've seen it with the 180° corners at bar sona and a couple of other times. Maybe even zambo last year, I remember when the predecessor car, it's really sensitive to wind. And so latifah, yeah, I think he was obviously set this purple first sector. I think he was personal best in his second sector. So definitely on for a Q two appearance. And then gusta wind, the final call, a big snap of overseer. It was all done. He was super frustrated. I won't actually had a very similar problem. So it was the car's shortcomings. And again, a bit of a cardboard because of the weather conditions and scrubbing a track. But hungaro wing is all about promoting high down force, and that's where the William suffers. So for them to be on the money, I think it was two really good performances, been denied a little bit. So there you go. There's talking up Latifi, there's a credit. That's given me a time in the limelight fair play. Absolutely

"Away immediately, that all the right things. But did you get a chance to speak to either of the hash drivers or the team after the race flight? Luke spoke to Bose. I spoke to both of them. Aren't you lucky? It was a very only very briefly to make. He was pulled away quite quickly, but yeah, he was taken to the medical center as tends to be the case with major accidents like this week. He said, look, I feel I feel okay and he said it was such a weird accident. He said he reckons he may be when a few centimeters onto a wet patch and quarter and then I just absolutely sent the car and it was just one of these things where there was only one line around that. If you go off the dry line you're in big trouble and I think Nick just caught a little bit of that with obviously very big consequences, but he was okay, which was good he's just said it's very, very annoying. Obviously this pointless run to start the season is it's not something he wants. I need to make a big breakthrough and I think the performances have been there have been good points, but we do need to see actual points to justify sort of what I guess what he's doing in the progress he's making. Sebastian Vettel, he was asked about mixed accident after the race and he said, I think you guys, I mean the media needs to sort of give him a break and stop being so hard on him, and it's like, yes, okay. That's a fair thing for you to say, but also it's our job to be critical and to hold people to account and to be journalists and to be analytical and I think that yeah, it is a mistake and it's the kind of thing that you look at and you say, look that cost you a chance to sort of be there when things all shook out. But yeah, so not what Mick would have wanted with camera. I mean, me and a lot of other people were like, oh wait, he's retired. So much was going on through the pit stops. It was only a few last place we actually thought that he was out of the race, but he was, again, surprisingly upbeat for a driver who just retired from the race. And he said that he thought that he was in a really good point. He thought that he had the pace to get past Bottas and he bought us up 9th, so could he have been in the mix for some points quite possibly, but he was a power unit issue in the end that ended Magnussen's race. It meant that Haas came away without any points today. Yeah, I did the same with Alex Alban. We haven't talked about Williams yet. I hadn't realized that he had retired on lap 48, such was the sort of focus on other things. And his teammate Nicholas Latifi, who I mentioned had that early lap one incident formation lap even in the treacherous conditions coming home. Probably no big Williams talking points coming out this weekend unless I'm wrong. Probably not. No, there you go. That sums up will be in a bit harsh. I had no cobblers. No, no, not at all. I mean, sometimes there's nothing to say about. Well, okay. They red hair. No, no red hair, the red hair. Yeah, that's not it's fading. But yeah, it's the kind of these kind of races that early in the season Williams were really capitalizing on and seizing the moment as the codders touched on earlier. But yeah, they weren't as able to do that today. Yeah, I think that I think for Williams, they, again, a bit like Aston Martin. It's like, where are they going? What more can they get out of this car? But this weekend was quite, it was quite anonymous. Latifi obviously had that crash on the formation lap and he's basically 5. The throttle got stuck. He just went on and it was something with the car, not a mistake on his part. So yeah, that would be something for William salty looking. But yeah, days of the kind of races where you would normally think, yet they're going to roll the dice and do something with Alban and maybe snare a point, but they weren't really in the picture at all today. Album was quick at certain points of the race. There were a couple of bits of the race where he was going purple, but that was because he was running on his own at the back, having committed a few blunders, he went off the track a couple of times. It just looked like a very difficult car to drive. They talk about it lacking down force. That's you sort of say, well, where in Monaco do you need down force? But these cars all run high down force packages to maximize what they have. And the Williams, that's just not in the car's skill set, unfortunately. And how many times over the past few years have we said that Williams is decently quick in a straight line, but lacks that ability to put down performance through aerodynamics. It's clearly some sort of ingrained problem that they need to address and it might even be a physical issue with their wind tunnel facilities, their research facilities because they've had a bit of a shake up a lot of bit of a shake up in their tech organization for a while. We could have asked FX demaison when he bumped into the lift ahead of us after we parked our car the other morning. Oh, I didn't realize that was him. Yeah. There we go. That's an hour. We move on to somewhere where there won't be those kind of downpours, at least highly unlikely air temple mid 20s. You would think for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. We're heading back to Baku, of course, we've mentioned already Sergio Pérez getting his first win for Red Bull their last year. Who is the fine fine team we are sending there to cover things for auto sports and motor sport dot com. We are sending Mac Hugh solo for also sport. "Faded Emilia romagna and re died for this weekend. And he said, he's back. He's back, he's feeling his form fade. And I was like, but the dive faded, and then it's re died now. It's more of a, it's a bright red again, and how you look at that with Alonso's penalty. 9th is so good. Which also means that Alex Albon has now scored more points than Fernando Alonso so far this year, which is a stat that I shall not be posting to Fernando Alonso, but it's no I wouldn't if I were you. It's great. It's great to see what Alban is doing. And I think that already comparisons have been drawn to the way that George Russell was so much the leader at that team alongside Nicholas Latifi. And we're kind of seeing a similar thing right now. Alban is always a step ahead and today he was absolutely fantastic again, getting the tire whisperer and the savings, but he's been doing. And it was a really great drive by him and it's just great to see someone who's been through so much in terms of being spat out by Red Bull and having year out to come in and just be performing at such a good level. So it really, really cool story. And I was actually talking to some team members at Williams before the race, and they were all extremely dejected because of their qualifying performance. They all believed they deserved more, I think. They thought that Alex had the pace to get into Q three. And so the fact that they were out in Q one for them was a massive blow. And the general feeling seemed to be quite one of, I actually won one team member said, we just need to score a point and that would be great. But I don't think they genuinely believed that they would. And I said to them, well, if anyone's going to do it, I think Alex will. And lo and behold, he did. Fluke. Our message the person I was talking to, and I was like, I told you. I'm not trying to wear a trumpet that hard. But he is. He is the driver that is going to do it. And he's doing such a good job at Williams. And it is as the extent it's so good to see considering the absolute whirlwind of a career he's had. But how good of a driver he is. And just the consistency of the performance is that he can pull out of that Williams. He's spearheading that team. What that says about Nikki? Amiable but slow Canadian as I believe I described him when I filed the audio file of our pen interview. Without wishing to be too downbeat, but I may be preempting the words of the other Alex, the one who's heckling us from the other side of this room who composes the driver ratings. But when I say that although Alex Alban, he's coming over and out. This is be a deer and fetch as a bottle from the fridge. So Valtteri Bottas is dad. Why is he being so mean to me? Can I help? I was saying, well, come hither, Alex. And I will add and break, and I thought that you can then transmit to the auto sport readers and pass them off as your own. Wow. Wow. Slipping into my soothsayer role now. I'm confidently predict that when Alex K composes his driver ratings, he will acknowledge that while Alex a did drive a very well judged race. It was because he didn't string together his theoretical best lap in qualifying that he underperformed and maybe that is what separates him from, say, George Russell in that role was also maximized the car in qualifying as well as getting good results out of it. And I think the issue for Nicholas Latifi is that he kind of does neither at the moment and he is struggling with time management and the issues he Nicholas was reporting with the car throughout the race. He's been driving like somebody who had no confidence in it at all and I think he needs to find he needs to turn a corner in his understanding of the car and the way to switch the tyres on, otherwise he's just constantly going to be slip sliding. But to return to the beginning of this exceedingly long and rambling peroration, I feel that Alex K will be marking Alex a down in his driver ratings because he failed to string together his theoretical ideal lap in qualifying, correct. But I'll do it much quicker than that. Okay, I do want to give on the last ten minutes of the podcast. A couple of incidents and things to talk about, we'll mention McLaren, Daniel Ricciardo finishing 13th, the 5 second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage, Lando Norris, a DNF because of that clash with gastly, which, yes, the Internet was, as the race was going on, I noticed posting a few more memes, probably Latifi based of just poking him saying, come on, crash, do something unfair to him. But then we did get a crash, and it's not where I thought it was going to come from with someone just, you know, getting a little too hot into a wall or something. Luke, you've spoken to the drivers after today. Is anyone taking responsibility for that because looking at it from different angles? You could kind of a portion of the blame 50 50 could Lando have given the gas was off track and clearly, even if you didn't have a technical issue, had that would have then picked up some darkness tyres. Could land of giving a wider birth was gasly at fault for just not seeing Lando come past big, big accident causing the safety car. What do you reckon? It was gasly's basically the car was broken. It was because the clash with Alonso that he had had that issue and that he said, I couldn't basically I couldn't stay. I couldn't get the car around. So he said he couldn't do much more. He said he had cars obviously flying past him. He wanted to get out of the way. He was planning to come into the pits and retire the car. But yeah, Nando obviously came across and Norris said, well, what more could I have done? I couldn't have gone to even further to the left and sort of wrist like I am going to be pushing to the walls. So yeah, I don't think anyone's taking any real blame there and a gassy said, I don't really see any reason to apologize. Lando had it explained to me he's like, well, it's just unlucky then and he reckons he would have finished 8th at best, so no huge loss, but yeah, obviously not how either would have wanted their races to have ended. Lando said afterwards that it was a bit of a eye opener as to their level of competitiveness against the rest of the field. And they seemed obviously you would be dejected if you've crashed out of the race, but it definitely seemed to be that they need to go away and have a really hard look and that the maybe they were buoyed by previous races, but this one kind of showed them up a little bit and they did really struggle. It was interesting that Daniel Ricciardo seemed quite chipper from my slightly peculiar view as I stood in the press pen looking at him speaking to the TV crews in the TV pen. He seemed to be sort of in smiley Dan mode, so not too bad. Lando just looked quite dejected and certainly in the.

Know cast judgement on someone else's friendship in terms of her saying the jen's business practices. She felt were were shady. I don't even think that was the exact word she used. But in any case you know it all she saying that things unsavory that was it all. She sang that things didn't add up to her as they didn't too many of us and she had no way of knowing why she was just didn't understand it and you know that was up okay. Here's ellen from florida with a question for canvas. this is actually for my girl candice. do you actually think giselle trying to be a good friend To wendy by bringing up the rumors about eddie and do you think it would have been better. If wendy heard it from giselle instead of ashley i think i know that zell was being messy by bringing it up to the group as a whole which is you know part. That's what she does. You have to accept people where they are she's messy. I do think that it might have been received better like as an iota. Better if she had gone directly to wendy. But you know. I still think that wendy was shocked. I've said many times before that. I don't think that wind. I think wendy thought that she was immune from gazelles tirades in her attacks and her her per foolishness. By the way speaking of foolishness. It seemed like dorothy was intimating to robin that she helped financial home. I am. I going to have to bring another d to another reunion. Yeah because like no one is paying for our mortgage except for christopher de bassett and candidates. Dominique dillard bassett dominique. Not the knee. Dominique that's me. Me and my mortgage payments meredith carly. I want to know after seeing jen's reconciliation. Tonight's episode did you. Do you feel just as dubious as whitney. About how real the friendship is. You know. I have never really understood how. They're in jen's dynamic their relationship. So i have no idea i can't i don't know i don't get it. It's up to them. "He really delivered. I came away from an hour. Sat with him really appreciating two things first his passion for the sport and second his racing brain how he navigated his way through the junior formulas when he had no family members to guide him was really interesting and the reasons for his loyalty to dams in formula to where a prime example of that and how we work with the people around him now in order to maximize his chances in formula. One is the mark of a guy with maturity well beyond his twenty-six years. nikki many. Thanks for your time. It was great to catch up. And i wish you every success in the second half of the season until them enjoy the break and before we move on. Don't forget to send in any stories or thoughts that you have on nikki. Were you at the hungering. We weekend to witness him getting his first points. Well let me know and remember all read out the best ones next week. Send them to me at tom. Clarkson f. one use the hashtag f. one beyond the great which brings me onto what you sent in about danielle. Ow detto. After last week's show a lot of you got in touch to say how much you enjoyed that episode and danielli certainly had some good stories to tell didn't he and they'll betty got in touch with this. Danielle data was incredible. Every word he said was so fascinating. That i now have to listen to the whole episode again. Well i'm glad you enjoyed it. And i do agree with you. He's sean new light on mid seventies formula one and otto. Bryce i got in touch with this. I've listened to all of the beyond the great episode and this one was the bath the storytelling and the opportunity to learn about what happened behind the scenes. At ferrari at the nurburgring in seventy six and during nikki's recovery was incredible. Thank you for making formula one even more fun well auto. You are a very loyal listener. And that's great to hear and thanks for your thoughts on the episode with nearly as well. I wholeheartedly agree with you. Danieli is a great guy who shed lots of light on that weekend at the nurburgring forty five years ago. And let's do two more. How about this one. From ashley would house. I could have listened to danieli hours says ashley historians about mr ferrari were hilarious. Well thanks ashley forgetting in touch. I too loved his tales. About enzo and if i had a time machine and could speak to anyone from formula one history or beyond the grid. Mr ferrari would be my choice. What a legend..

"Things pursue some of his own passions. No pressure to say or do anything like that. Younger siblings are still yet to go to university. So stole bit. Pbc phil what they all going to go to university looking at. Yes yeah so. School was obviously and education was obviously a very important thing in. My family was very important to me and i did finish. Finish my high school which is like the the finishing a levels in the uk or something like that so it's like what you do before university which is more than a lot of drivers have done. I know that for a fact and it was very difficult to finish. I finish the last year and a half of my my schooling online. Just because i was trying to travel too much and did finish it and the kind of deal ahead with with my parents. Was that if you know racing for whatever reason didn't work out i would go back to university. Still apply now. They're informal university. Never going to happen. What i guess never say never i made you go to university when you're forty or fifty years old if you need is an honorary degree. That's what you need to hope. One got one for many many years. So we'll we'll see never seen number but let's just hope that if that comes up it's many many years well it's been so brilliant chats you. I know that you've got a load of stuff you need to go into. So thank you for your time. One last question. Yep which is. What are the older generation in. Hungary alonzo's fourteenth birthday etc. What are the older generation like with you. The younger generation someone like lonzo. I think The what walk along the helmet swap with with everybody on the grid. That'd be cool. He does definitely very cool souvenir to keep from the interactions. I've had with alonzo lewis. Obviously i think goes without saying a bit quieter into himself but no i mean. Obviously very approachable the very welcoming. You know that there are there Throwing out advice do this do this do this. But you know you feel like you could talk to them. Just like your your competitor. His massive age difference prior to form the one. You're most of the time racing against people that are your age so it is different than when you're racing against people who are that much more experienced equally someone like fernando or vattel. Louis handle title. I forgot about battle yet. Mean those guys that were they were the heroes of us when you were watching or not what. She can't remember where he left. That i mean definitely guys like alonzo and hamilton were guys. I looked up. Duffy didn't idolize them but there were guys. I looked up when i started really getting into it and started racing just for various reasons for their own individual achievements and then yeah obviously even garlic vital goes without saying as well four-time champion. Yeah it's very cool. To start sharing the chock with them when i started i doing few ones ultimately let the race driver so because i always said you know probably over half the race against many many times over various years so it's like well just in a different car now all these young drivers race against before. But then you have the other half. Which are they're very much more experienced. Ones were established ones world champions and that was very cool. Well look best of luck with everything that comes your way. Thank you thank you your time and speak to you thank you. Thank you probably. What a wonderful chats. I told you nikki's and engaging guy and.

What we age seventeen something like that yet around seventeen. How tough was it to go and live in europe thousands of miles away from your family. Yeah i mean it was. It was definitely tough. Something even at points now. Still find difficult i mean. I did most of my racing over in north america. Starting karting thirteen years old from me which was quite a late start i did. Maybe we also don't know the exact number. But i could count on both hands. Probably how many races. I did outside of north america in my my car in career so not very many at all of see you know the goal was to try and make it the formula one and to do that and you had to go over to europe to race maybe. Can i stop you right that. The goal was formula one yet north america. There's a there's a great following for indycar and other forms of open wheel racing. Where did the passion for former one come from. Because there's even an indycar race was in toronto. Yes your home city so why formula one guess at the time prior to getting into carting itself you know. We always go to the formula one race in montreal and to be honest even when i started karting i didn't really have an intention or ambition to make it a career and get the formula one was only a few after a few years. And i'm like yeah. This is great. This'll be cool to try and pursue a career formula one just it seemed at the time and it obviously is not the most prestigious racing series in the world. I mean that's got what i walked on. Tv that's what seemed cool other other members of your family. What was the thinking behind them. Genuinely fascinated to know why you didn't maybe try and to two primary enough to. Yeah so it's a question because it definitely was. Mcdonald's is a great team yeah little slight on dams. But i'm just the whole time. And i mean to be honest it after the first year was a question mark and they they kind of knew. It was a question mark as well. Yeah i mean. At the time that i went into form the to bam's was one of the top teams. I think they were in the top three or top five teams in the first year. I was with them. And that was the euro teammates with alex. Lynn ann in two thousand sixteen and then was a very very difficult year. For whatever reason it just seems like the team had taken a step backwards. And i was for sure. Not the benchmark driver means first year. But i know i know. "He's cars are they're so fast you have to be so on the limits and when you're on that limit it's like a knife edge if you go too far and really get but if you don't get to that limit then you're on the other side of it. You're you're giving up time and no one wants to do that. How much more is to come defeo. I definitely think there's still a lot to come for sure. I mean i think naturally probably from the first year to the second year there will always be a big improvement. I think when you when you don't have any experience that the rate of improvement will always be big. But i i do feel that once you kind of get over that let's say initial hump though experience and you start to get settled into a bit more rhythm more comfortable you're then also able to analyze things much better and kind of start to understand more what you know. The steps needs to take to keep improving. And that's kind of where. I feel like kind of a maui. Comfortable much more comfortable with the car. And i can still be improved. I can still be doing a better job. But i feel not a point now where i could stick. Estaban analyzed much more. Okay now now. Working i keep improving. I know where. I need to keep improving. It's been highlighted to me in the past races. And then you know obviously when you know there's still room for improvement you could take it two ways you could say all that's not good because it means you're not optimizing we can right now but i see it. It's good because i see i'm improving. The potential is getting better. And i still see this room to keep to keep improving so if i can get the chase those steps and get that extra improvement then. I think the performance will be where i want it to be. Let's talk williams. How different is the team. Now to the one that you first joined back in twenty nineteen. It's quite a lot that has changed to say the least. Yeah i mean now. I think the team is definitely has has the foundations to you..

It was a team mistake anti mistakes. I told me to drag this up. It just did reminded talking about radio penalty for else from the from the military from like always say it was the royal artillery. Yeah exactly. Yeah so i got to ride around one of their heavy artillery guns. I got the sledge hammer out a few of the tracks the the tracks like a tank a conveyor belt type things got the change track and then also got to go down. I didn't drive personally. Someone else job to sit in the driver seat and got the rev the engine like a kid doing it. I mean i was quite gentle on it. Initially because i was like you know normally my experience. When you jump into revved the engine you know has look warm up a little bit right. You don't wanna go flat out. I is bad for the engine. Then they were like flat out flat out. And i was like ten seconds and like keep going keep going was the cameraderie. Among the guys they're similar to a rating. I think so. I mean i. I went to two different departments. Mainly seoul The first place. I was whereas recently worthy tank looking thing was and there was a bunch of guys who kind of doing maintenance on on a lot of the machines there and you kinda seeing all them working together to do that and then the second part which was a cool part was going to see kind of like. They're over overwatch center so like It's like a. Uav there at the train the pilots to pilot the uab's solve simulator. "And i usually do bathing indoor carty and they said do you talk to the former landrover about how similar karting is to driving a formula. One car oviously massive differences. Are there any parallels. Yeah i mean there's definitely parallels i mean i think specifically with the shifter car so gearbox car i think it is really one of the probably the closest thing to an f one car in terms of like power to weight ratio than fullerton. I would say so. I don't know the actual numbers by harbour. I would. I would think so before being informed the one. That's what i was always told. It's the closest thing to a formula one cars. But yeah i mean obviously it's very physical as well. Karting and formula cars is a completely different kind of physicality. I mean carting. You get beat up much more especially. It's a bumpy track having to use a gearbox card you know what's driving with one hand and a lotta time on the wheel and you just really get the bruised and battered whereas if formula cars whether it's know formula two or an olympic car formula one. It's much more kind much. Wears you down much more. Because it's you know very progressive but prolonged. Jeez let's say so. Not as bumpy smooth ride got gotta seat. That's to your body so it's more comfortable as well but it just kinda wears you down from like the time on time under tension type thing. Yes interesting so bitter that before belgium. Maybe would it be about idea to get back driving something Before belgium every time after the radio so weird when you jump back in the car. It's almost like going to jump in. After the winter break is the first time you sit in the car and the first lap just like. Oh it's been a while so it spowers it yeah it's not a half-hearted places that'd be very high speed yeah flat through jarreau gotta be done on the i got and that's always a little competition in junior categories for lot flat out nella..

Pancakes crepes waffles. Maybe even french toast. Just gotta see what. I'm going to be a bit bigger which i'm sure that's the first thing my engineer will call me up if you know just about because obviously is always a thing with tall drivers at a very funny dream. I told my engineer the other day and again ayatollah guy. I'm not. I'm one eighty six six so i'm under the weight limit but because i'm tall. Have to keep an eye on on myself for the way ltd. You know last hundres and they could tell you you know if i was two hundred grams heavier than i should have been over the race since it will cost me x. Amount of time. That weekend. So i had a dream the other week and the i told them when i was at the last time they were out. I was at the simulator session in the dream. This is a great problem to have resou- quite an extreme action too late but it never happened. Never never happen. It's actually a few times this year. What i've been. I've been told you could eat a bit more but Yeah i scarred a bit from last year if you don't wanna give any numbers out. But i'm quite interested to note. What is your fighting weight so basically with all of my kit because of my probably you know shoes boots helmets. Hawn's everything like that probably weighs about anywhere between four and a half to four point eight. Those obviously the taller. You are the heavier. You're should way because you have bigger shoes. Bigger suits more material. Maybe a bigger head helmet just defense so my race away. Let's say pre-qualifying try and target seventy seven point five kilos. So that's me around high. Seventy two seventy three. That's not much body for that. That's not much mattel. And that's obviously you know being hydrated not a full stomach. Because you know you don't wanna race on a but you've eaten. It's not like a morning a morning.
