Debt limit deal heads to vote in full House while McCarthy scrambles for GOP approval
"The debt ceiling and budget deal worked out between House speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden has advanced to the full House, where a vote is expected Wednesday. I'm Ben Thomas with a look at its progress. The House rules committee voted 7 to 6 to advance the bill, chairman Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican calling it a product of compromise. And reflects the realities of a divided government. We shouldn't allow that to overshadow what this bill accomplishes. It would restrict spending for the next two years while also suspending the nation's debt limit during that time, and the nonpartisan congressional budget office says it reduces deficits by $1.5 trillion over the decade, but South Carolina Republican Ralph Norman also a member of the freedom caucus was disappointed. We had a real bill that was going to make a difference. We did in the original bill. This being watered down is completely takes the teeth out of it. And I see why the Democrats vote for it. I see it now. He and Texas congressman chip Roy, who earlier in the day, said not one Republican should vote for this deal. Join Democrats in opposing the bill's advance. Ranking Democrat Jim mcgovern of Massachusetts accusing the GOP of weaponizing the debt ceiling, saying it's a precedent that will forever haunt the nation. One party can use the full faith and credit of the United States as a hostage to pass their widely unpopular ideas. Adding, someday, hopefully not in my lifetime, but someday there will be a Republican president. And you will remember this moment because what you are trying to do is get things enacted that you could not get done through regular order. Ben Thomas, Washington

Crucial days ahead as debt ceiling deal goes for vote and Biden calls lawmakers for support
"There are crucial days ahead as The White House and congressional leaders work to pass a compromise package in time to lift the nation's borrowing limit and prevent a U.S. default. A key test will come this afternoon when the House rules committee is scheduled to consider the debt limit package and vote on sending it to the full House, officials say the U.S. risks default as soon as June 5th, President Biden says he feels good about the deal negotiated with House speaker Kevin McCarthy and has been calling lawmakers ahead of this week's votes in Congress. There are still concerns about the deal's passage with some hard right conservatives criticizing the lack of deep spending cuts they wanted, and liberals denouncing policy changes like new work requirements for older Americans in the food aid program, the full House is expected to vote on Wednesday. Revitalize Your Relationship With Dr. Cassie's Dating Tips
"Novelty makes your relationship stronger and happier and Cassie shared a good tip on how to add novelty to your dates. If you are for instance going on a weekly date with your partner do a variety of activities. So my husband and I in our relationship we have a weekly date and we had wandering Wednesdays. This was before we had kids where every Wednesday we would go out so there was no variety there but the variety came in that we would always have to do something new. So go to a different restaurant, go to a show, something that we hadn't done before and what that does is that it makes you continue to pay attention. Also taking a break from these things that you enjoy. There was an interesting study by Jordy Klaudbach and his colleagues where they looked at among chocolate eaters people who like eating chocolate and among some of them they randomly assigned that they would have to take a break and not eat chocolate for a week and what they found was that although you know there was no difference in the enjoyment of the chocolate before the week break between these two groups a week later when they came back and that chocolate first chocolate that was eaten after the week those who had taken a break and not eaten even a chocolate for the week enjoyed the chocolate more. They said it tasted better, they savoured it more and so another option is not only increasing variety among our experiences that we enjoy but sometimes taking a break from those things that we enjoy so that when we re -engage and we start anew it really does feel like starting

Uvalde families dig in for new test of gun industry protections
"Yuval di Texas are digging in for a new test of legal protections for the gun industry as they get ready to mark one year since the school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers. Both the U.S. government and gun manufacturers in recent years have reached large settlements following some of the nation's worst mass shootings. Gun control supporters say other cases have created road maps for victims and relatives to sue and Democrat led states are rolling back some industry protections, but high hurdles remain for lawsuits to succeed. Tennessee's governor just signed a bill that further shields gun manufacturers which are already largely protected from lawsuits under federal laws. Meanwhile, Wednesday will mark one year since the most deadly school shooting in Texas history.

New legislation on Capitol Hill is pushing to keep a.m. radio in the nation's cars. On Wednesday, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the a.m. for every vehicle act. The measure requires automakers to keep a.m. radio in new cars at no additional cost. Supporters cite public safety reasons and a.m. radio's critical role in emergency response. Senator Edward Markey, one of the sponsors of the act, says automakers, including Tesla, BMW and Ford, have removed broadcast and radio from their electric vehicles. Critics of the bill say mandating a.m. radio is unnecessary, pointing to the integrated public alerts and warning system, which can distribute safety warnings across a.m., FM, Internet based and satellite radios, and over cellular networks. Usually what you do is you set up in your front yard. You just have your drinks out there on the sidewalk. Oh, yeah, you would know. All right. Stop. That's pretty cool. That's great. So all right, So the subways were gonna be extended into the night. Now they've been closed from one I am to 5 a.m. for cleaning, but now they're only gonna be closed from 2 A.m.. Before I am so little by little, The city is beginning to come back to life. Sarah Feinberg, She's the interim president of the New York City Transit Authority. Here's what she has to say. We've been doing so for many months now, and we will continue to do so We clean our system 24 hours a day. We clean and disinfect stations twice each day. We clean and disinfect subway cars multiple times each day that will continue, so you don't have to close. So why do you have to close it for two hours? Is that to get the homeless out? What's that? What's the reason? Oh, my God. I don't know. I don't know. They gotta clean it. They got it all. Take him off the tracks and clean him up. Scrub him. It was Joe knows Joe. Put him back on. Well, badly. If you know what it was, I think they're using cleaning and the homeless as an excuse to just not have the trains run. His well, I don't want them to run. Save them because they don't have full ridership. You want to save a little money? They don't have interesting question, though. I think even after all vaccinated Don't think I'm ever going to be taking the subway as often as I used to. I mean, I was already writing my bike, most places. But if you think about it, forget about the coronavirus. Think about all the other gross stuff you can pick up from being on the subway that never occurred to me before. If you get cold or the flu, chances are somebody sneezed in your face on the subway. That's how you got it. You mean like someone stabbing someone on the A train? You know, I figured somebody who said the subway system is really a harbinger of things to come for the city. The subway is one of the first things to really unravel in the city. That's falling apart with crime skyrocketing, and that's what's happening right now. So the subway problems are a prelude to the bigger problems that are gonna be plaguing this city. "His role in the mob attacked that left five people dead and had lawmakers cowering in fear for their lives. The threat is not over. The FBI is warning that armed protests are being planned at all. 50 state capitals beginning this Saturday through at least the inauguration and that an armed group is planning to travel to Washington if Trump is removed from office. National security experts have been sounding the alarm over what they describe as a mass of radicalization that is under way on the right and here to talk about this is Mary McCord. She served in the Justice Department under both presidents Obama and Trump Most recently has the acting assistant attorney general for national security. She now teaches at Georgetown Law Welcome Thank you for having me. Great to have you? Well as a former Justice Department official. I just want to get your reaction to the news. We just heard that the Washington Post reports the FBI had intelligence that warned of extremist traveling to capital with the goal of committing violence and quote unquote war. They had that contradicts, apparently what they said previously that they didn't have this intelligence. What's your reaction to that? Well, you know, I know that they have the intelligence because my organization now Georgetown law, where we've done a fair bit of anti unlawful militia work and anti extremism work. We have our own researchers and we were sending that type of information to law enforcement. But of course, we're not the only source there would have been their own intelligence and having spent 20 almost 25 years, the Department of Justice and Law Enforcement. I know there's Multiple sources of intelligence. And so you know, I'm not surprised to hear that because that is what many of us who were mind trying extremist, you know, communications and propaganda. That's that's what many of us were seeing. I will say that's among some of the more extreme of the type of rhetoric and chatter that was being heard this idea of civil war and things like that. But there's no question that there were people who were intent on engaging in acts of violence among the many, many other people who came to Washington last Wednesday. So what accounts for the fact that the capital was so apparently unprepared for this onslaught and failed to protect the people inside, including the vice president, the United States. Yeah, well, we have yet to get a good explanation for that. I think this will be the subject of you know, some significant investigation and after action reporting, um a certainly local Metropolitan Police department, I know was very much prepared and on alert they had experienced, you know, two previous events that involved some of the same groups. Earlier in December in November, and so they were getting regular information and briefing and you know, sharing it. I think with all the other law enforcement in D, C D. C is so unique because there are so many overlapping. Law enforcement agencies with different jurisdictions. So for peoples who may not know if they're out on the West Coast, like the Capitol police is uniquely a police force for the Capitol complex. They don't have that jurisdiction elsewhere, right, And there are there is secret service that has its own jurisdiction. There is the local and metropolitan Police department than their other federal protective services and other services. So Why the Capitol Police were did not have a plan to have more, Uh, relationships and Maura officers from the other coordinate branches there, because oftentimes they do work together. I mean, do you see is very used to preparing for mass events. I mean, they happen in D C all the time, not usually with As much intento commit violence, but certainly they have to prepare for that. So you know, lots of people have commented. I think I have a few of my own theories, one of which is that the Capitol police Although they're very used to demonstrations at the capital, they are used to those demonstrations being primarily peaceful with people who are Generally going to abide by the law, or they're intentionally committing acts of civil disobedience, expecting to be arrested in doing so peacefully, they don't have as much experience with sort of violent mobs. Um, but I think also, they may have been thinking wrongly, that this is a group of people who consider the Soames patriots. They're mostly white. And there are you know they're mostly conservative or far right. Republicans. And there are Republican legislators inside the capital. Right now, you know, casting votes and that they that this mob would not try to invade the capital would not do anything violent that they would be respectful. And of course, they were very wrong about that. Right. Okay, So I guess the big question is, how deep does this go? I think a lot of us are wondering well, how many of these radicalized Um, far right, Pro Trump. People are there out there and how dangerous is it right now in America? So I think it's dangerous. But I don't want to over pivot on this because the problem when you have an event like last Wednesday, and when you have, you know. Ah, lot of online read trick is it tends to, I think, Make Ordinary people viewing what happened or listening to it think that this that this is a much more mainstream ideology? I would still maintain that those who advocate such far right extremist views as to actually think that an insurrection is acceptable in the U. S is still is a tiny fraction of the population. But when you get airtime, you know, live TV all day, And then it talked about again for days and days afterwards and I'm not saying that's not appropriate. You know, that makes it seem like it's a bigger problem than it is. And so I do believe that the vast majority of Americans do not want civil war. They do not want insurrection. They want a trance, peaceful transition. Transfer of power. And I imagine that Even some of those people who came last week wanted that they just wanted to protest and exercise their First Amendment rights. But they were swept up in a mob that included very far right extremists and it conspiracy theorists and those who were intent on using violence, and many probably ended up engaging in some of that illegal activity, even if they hadn't intended to having said All of that, it is a serious problem in the U. S. And we see it in every state. We see conspiracy theories we see on unlawful private militias who tried to, you know, use their force and their projection of the use of force to intimidate or coerce. We thought Like you know, In many instances, post election we also saw during the summer of racial justice protests them using their force, ostensibly almost like law enforcement to try to Um Protect property, you know and use and make their own decisions about using lethal force usurping law enforcement rolls. So this is a problem in America, and you know it's a problem right now in the immediate future because of the plans For these marches with arms. Now I think those plans are changing literally on a minute by minute and day by day basis, So I think we will have to stay tuned T, you know, to see how those might evolve and change between now and the weekend and then next January, 20th Right. Still, when you look at the depth and level of support and the fervent support of President Trump, you have more half of Republican voters don't believe the November election was free and fair..
