He was a great his eve's great but it but also in runs scored as well until bryce harper surpassed him in two thousand seventeen walker was named the national league player of the month for the first time that season or that month. Actually and walkers sat out the In interleague game on june twelfth versus the sat seattle mariners former expos teammate. I faced randy onetime in spring training and he almost killed me walker explained at of rationale he collected his one thousand three hit and one hundred eighth of the season again on june twentieth against andy. Ashby of san diego over the decision to bat against johnson instigated a debacle as one of the most indelible moments of larry walker's career because about a month later in the one thousand nine hundred seven all star game this walker face johnson who theatrically through over his head ever adaptable walker placed his helmet on batting backwards. "Fifty one late june or up. Sorry one hundred fifty one opium plus any league's leading forty four doubles the ladder. Two figures were also new career highs. He was six in our in the league and rbi's seventh in war with a four point seven offensive. Wind percentage with a seven point. Three nine seven three nine. Winning percentage and it opie s plus in eighth in batting and slugging he placed eleventh in nl mvp voting as well that season perhaps one the most remarkable aspects of the expos transcendence. That season was they did so with the second lowest payroll in baseball over. The team lost millions of dollars in revenue from twenty nine cancelled home games. Playoffs general manager kevin malone was given orders to drastically reduce the payroll. The club dealt away their young stars including the declining offer of arbitration to walker as such. He was granted free agency so The montreal expos actually for very longtime were kind of hemorrhaging money. And i could probably talk a little bit about that in a in a future episode. In fact i might actually talk about it a little bit more In a yeah definitely upcoming episode because I think that what david samson and his stepfather. Jeffrey loria did in montreal was actually very nice and they've actually talked about it quite a bit. They really wanted to keep that team in montreal especially when they were leaving And nobody in nobody in their ownership group and nobody in montreal ended up stepping up which is really catapulted fortunate but he he was granted free agency and walker inside a four year contract with the colorado rockies worth nearly twenty two point five million dollars at the time and that is worth about thirty eight point two million dollars today the largest agreement since the strike and the average nash annual value acquitted to more than five point. Six million or nine point five million today up from four million dollars or seven million dollars today that the expos had been paying him the year prior from stadium. To course field walker transitioned into one of if not the most belittling hitting environment since world war two now nonetheless. Even after mathematically adjusting stadiums altitude advantages his production during his rocky years consistently rivalled those hitters. Who accomplished came in greater difficulty so like even though keeps playing in colorado or the by the ball flies a lot more is hitting better than hitters in houston either way in the nineteen ninety. Five season is rocky's debut came with the inaugural game of course field on april twenty six versus the new york. Mets walker doubled three times including one. That tied the score with two outs in the ninth resulting in an eleven to nine extra innings win on may seventh nineteen ninety-five. He hit his one hundredth career. Home run versus nomo of the los angeles angels walker attained new career highs with thirty six home runs and one hundred one. Rbi reaching both thirty home runs and one hundred rbi for the first time in his career. In spite of missing thirteen games of a season shortened by strike that had begun the year before his rate numbers were three. Oh six a three eighty one. On base percentage six seven slugging percentage as the club averaged a five point. Four runs per game is opium plus bell about twenty percent from the year before to a one thirty one baracher walker ranked second in home runs tied with sammy sosa. Slugging extra-base hits seventy two total bases with three hundred and at-bats per home run with thirteen point seven and hits by pitch with fourteen third opie s with a nine eight and seven runs scored. With ninety six and rbi's he placed seventh that year in nl mvp voting his second time in the top ten one of the court of rockies players who became known as the black street bleak treat bombers walker. Dante vinnie casteel ebony. Castella and former expos teammate andrea scholar. Aga all each contributed at least thirty home runs in one thousand nine hundred five. The rocky simultaneously won their first ever national league wild card berth. Under the new postseason format and the first playoff appearance in franchise history in just their third season of play walker collected three hits in fourteen at bats in national league division series versus the atlanta braves. He hit his first career. Postseason homerun off. Tom glavin in the sixth inning of a seventy four game two loss the rockies or the braves defeated the rockies in four games that year walker primarily played center field in nineteen ninety-six though fifty four of the eighty three total games in a season cut short by injury in may of one thousand nine herbs are made twenty first of nine hundred ninety six and a game against the pittsburgh pirates he doubled and tripled hit a pair of two run home runs in a career. Best six runs and he twelve ten win. He set a club record with thirteen. Total bases in one game the next day also against the pirates he set in mlb record with six consecutive extra-base hits on may twenty six of that season walker was selected for his first mlb player of the week award. He missed more than two months of the ninety six season due to a fractured clavicle. And that occurred in a collision with out with outfield fence. He hit three ninety three course field and just one forty two on the road that year but boy. Oh boy does larry walker bounce back in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven. The rockies commenced the ninety seven season on the road and thus walker started a reversal of his poor fortunes away from cores. He hit two home runs in season opener against the reds in cincinnati which granted. That is a very good airs ballpark. But on april fifth he hit three more versus the expos in montreal for his first career. Three run home run game. The second lane near landed near a homemade sign reading bunkerville after after the third fans cheered walker for the hat trick in recognition of his former dream playing professional hockey. They decided that he was very raw and he did. Not initially warrant a rating as a top prospect. Now now that he is in the majors though or at least he is no longer an amateur baseball player. He is a professional. We go to the minor leagues now. Walker attended expos minor league training spring training. Camp in nineteen eighty-five it was clear from the outset. That pitching was complete a complete mystery to him. He swung indiscriminately expecting every pitch to be a fastball. Including the ones that bounced ten feet of or on home plate. When camp ended there was still one and a half months remaining until the start of the season so he returned home seeking additional preparation. He joined a fastpitch softball league sponsored by a bowling alley. But this brought little relief the expos assigned walker to the utica. "Cody decker. Welcome back to another week here in major league baseball. You are listening to big time baseball for here for odyssey sports. I'm cody decker. Form professional baseball player turned professional. Smart ass on the radio and most importantly with me as always the single greatest human being who has ever lived in major league baseball history. He is tony when junior. Tony how you doing brother code. How about yourself man. Is this whole playoff things. Starting to heat up my man it's going in such crazy directions and utter chaos really. We've talked about chaos lately and you know it's almost like major league baseball. You have a pretty good idea going into september. What the playoff picture is gonna look like and yeah we know what it looks like at the top of the divisions but the wild cards are just that they are wild as hell right now both in the al and the nl teams coming out of the woodwork teams. That i've been telling people to pay attention to for so long and now finally people who have no choice but to pay attention because a lot other teams faltering but before we get to the wildcards we gotta talk a little bit about the hall of fame inductions yesterday. Three new members of the hall pretty cool good speeches. Of course obviously larry walker and of course derek. Jeter but your guy. Ted simmons dude has maybe the single greatest voice of any human being that's ever lived. I felt like it was being bathed in dark chocolate. Just slowly but do not ted does have a very soulful voice and I listen one of the one of the. If not the smartest baseball mine i've ever had the privilege of being around. He was my bench coach for two years. Once in Milwaukee no a an oh nine. He was the bench coach. In in san diego And so he's he is a very playful guy At times but also a very serious individual and you kinda gotta a taste of that during his speech like he is He is which i think. You called a morgan freeman as a little morgan freeman. But here. here's my direct. And i think. I really got this down. I think i nailed him. I think with the looks. He's got the exact identical looks of steve coogan and the voice of a middle aged. Rick dees okay. Okay okay The first gentlemen's an actor right. Neider british british actor. If you google them. It's the spitting image. It's frightening actually saw a picture. It's it's it's. he's a older version. So it's a pretty pretty good pretty good but yeah man. He's glad to see both him. Obviously derek larry walker all get in there and I mean i got to see Larry walker play. Obviously we all got to see derek. Jeter play Those two guys were were especially for me larry walker. I got to see a lot of him. And my dad went up a few times in the For the batting title he was just one of those freaks of nature I loved the story. He told a you know a lot of people we think. Mark grant who was The tv Analyst for for san diego's talents story about larry walker in are one of the minor league spots the same store he told yesterday were ball. Hit line drive. He goes back to the base but he cuts across the field and couldn't understand. You know why he was called out after beating the throw. A lot of people don't believe that story. And i thought it was hilarious that he actually told it for part of his fame speed. You went to more amazing than that on top of that it's funny. He's told that. Story the other story. Which i think he's better known for but the fun fact when he was on the montreal expos. He played a game at dodger stadium. Where yes i was at the game. I was like seven years old. I was sitting there in the stands wondering why jose offer them going first to third on a fly ball routine to right field. It was madness. No one understood what was going on. And i remember thinking he tried to go he did. He went back and got the ball from the ball through it. And i'm like he didn't edge something in his speech last night that finally it all clicked for me because he said i never really played more than like thirty games a year until i was sixteen hockey was first and then it became a baseball player. Kind of at seventeen on my. That's why he didn't know the rules exists why he cut as retouching the basis just took a beeline imagine. Why see that in real life. I think i would follow the floor. Laughing and watching. The guy gets furious after it had to be the greatest thing ever. I larry walker fan. I mean as a kid now you mentioned how he your dad and he both them both always had the batting title. I remember when i was a little kid and my next door neighbors. They were twins. We played baseball. We were the same age we always played like basically like backyard baseball with tennis balls and the rule was we could never hit with our normal sides hand. I couldn't hit right handed so we always pick full on left-handed teams. And i remember. I always hit and do impressions of larry walker a rail langford and the only reason i didn't get tony. Gwynn is my other friend. Pick them first so you had you had to completely different stats like standing straight up railing. Ferdinand you had the kind of spread out. Larry walker man. I mean he was. I mean look go back and look at some of his numbers he put up some crazy homerun. Rbi totals in the same year and that was really before getting to Colorado once he got to colorado day went up even more and Like i said it was good to see him. Obviously jeeter no. I don't think anybody had any doubt jeeter was gonna be any shout out to all who helped can get an including the one guy who didn't vote for him now. It was supposed to be those. Were supposed to be public. Then they kind of went back on and said now. We won't necessarily do it. That way I would like to know who the one guy who said that. He shouldn't be how famous i want. Never understand it for the rest. My very certain. There's certain people who are voting for the hall of fame that i feel like just for certain actions. I don't care if it's for protest or whatever. You shouldn't be allowed to vote because derek jeter doused is just unanimous. Not in question like me. I almost started losing my faith in people when trevor hoffman wasn't the first ballot guy like trevor hoffman deserves. His own wing let alone be in the hall of fame that that whole can't get in on the first ballot thing is is is one of the most ridiculous things by all by all measurements That i've that. I think we we experienced in sports. Like the whole idea that you can't get in on the first ballot base just because basically is is so mind-blowing to me but you know it is what it is and you know. The thought was if they made it public. You would you'd get rid of that and no one year they did They did get rid of it right. I think mariana rivera went in without any body confronted. Because they knew they'd be exposed. Now that kinda gone back under dark again..

Twenty jeeter goes from the yankees and then place half a season for the rockies. They they didn't have a hall of famer. Play a game for the franchise. They were the only major league baseball team who could make that claim and of course that is no longer the case due to walker getting in walker also became the second canadian in cooperstown. Joining only fergie jenkins as the only other canadian walker said during his speech quote. Thank you canada. I share this honour with every canadian. And i hope that all of us canadian kids out there that have dreams of playing in the big leagues seem here. Today gives you another reason to go after those dreams and quotes and continuing around larry walker if you guys remember when he got the call that he was going into the hall of fame. He was wearing this pretty outrageous. Spongebob squarepants shirt. Spongebob squarepants is on the left chest front and on the right chest front. It says eight no ordinary sponge. Well this shirt now has a place in cooperstown it's actually displayed next to an umpire's mask and old jersey and it is right there in the hallway at let's see in cooperstown so he then on his suit while he was giving his speech worry. Spongebob squarepants pin on his jacket. So he continued to show his love for spongebob squarepants. And certainly the shirt. That's in the hall of fame is probably one of the more outrageous items artifacts there in cooperstown but larry walker. He had a great career of course six years in montreal to start out his career where he hit two eighty one with ninety nine home runs. Three hundred and eighty four. Rb is but then really took off for colorado spending ten years with the rockies hitting three thirty four for the rockies with two fifty eight two hundred and fifty eight home runs eight hundred and forty eight. rbi's and then rounding out his career with two years and saint louis where he hit two eighty six with twenty six home runs and seventy nine rbi so a career three thirteen hitter. Three hundred eighty three home runs. One thousand three hundred and eleven. Rbi's for larry walker as to the all time greats were finally recognised and enshrined in cooperstown here on this past wednesday so now transitioning to the twenty twenty one class. Or excuse me. Nobody was voted in in two thousand twenty one so the twenty twenty two class who is going to get in who could potentially make it. Well there's quite a bit of new covers on the on the ballot this year. A lot of them are going to be one indict. And these are names that you would recognize such as marlon byrd. Carl crawford ryan howard. Tim linda justin moreno prince fielder joe nathan jonathan. Paypal bon peavy. Aj presents ski on your e bay. Have ryan vogel song. All of these guys are on the ballot. But i don't think any of them ultimately get to that five percent mark to remain on the ballot moving forward now. We do have some other guys who are kind of hanging around to who got enough votes last year..

"What is going on George? Well, Hilary Curtis Samuel not practicing in today. We saw him on the practice field Monday. Ron Rivera said He came out of it okay, but then started to practice today but could not go so he had to leave the field. That growing injury will see it as availability coming up for Sunday. If he's going to be available, Ryan Fitzpatrick would like to have them out there. Yeah, Curtis is going to be a big part of what we do The luxury of Some of the stuff that happened in the off season was there was a lot of reps with with all kinds of different guys, so he's a guy that played a ton in this league. That's had a lot of success. So when we have them out there, it's been good working with him when he wasn't out there in the off season. We got to work with a lot of the other guys, so he'll be a big part of what we do, and hopefully he can get on the field to come Sunday against the Chargers. NFL says. "Class here, you know that you have to do it on Friday. We know why you do it because you don't want to get in the way of NFL Sunday. Obviously give these these you know. Wednesday of our department of Wednesday give these outstanding players a great great forum. Nobody want to do it on Thursday. Speicher's hold up by the box definitely at the Dallas Cowboys tomorrow night and Friday might get mixed in with some college football, so probably best to do it on Wednesday here, Marvin Miller is a non player, winning Ted Simmons switch hitting power catcher champion Larry Walker. You know, Some people had an issue with Larry Walker. I didn't. I mean, you know, watching Larry Walker Prime Larry Walker had one of the best arms. I mean of all time. I mean to me. He's with Wind field and Clement Day in day, Parker. Um, eat, you roll in right field. I'm probably missing a couple. I'm sure I am. But he he had a rocket and he was a great player. But let's face the highlight of the day was Jeter. The highlight of the day was Jeter. And that maybe not for Ted Simmons and Larry Walker fans, but certainly for the Yankees and and Jeter what he represented the amazing thing about their agenda right to me, and it's always been this way and I think It. This is why it's so unique, and I think it's going to be hard for anybody not impossible, but hard for somebody to replicate this when You know, and I watched his first game and Phil Rizzuto was still on the call at the old Jacobs field against the Indians. Opening day. 96 Tories First year is the skipper Buck Showalter gets fired Yankees win the World Series that year. But in his first game and he's not a power guy hits a home run over the high wall. Makes a great over the shoulder catch with. I think couple of men on base with Cody on the mound. Great. You can see poised immediately. An ever bill and and and ability. To elevate, you know, he's not a home run. Henry goes yard his first game as a rookie, right? And but the thing about Jeter and you'll appreciate this is a former athlete. Never the best athlete. Never 40 or 50. Stolen Base Guy. Marginal power, nominal power Now it didn't take steroids. Probably gonna 30 if he did, but Well, I think at times was a bit of an overrated field or I think the name got him a few gold gloves. But what Jeter did, and you cannot quantify this. That clutch gene, and that slow heartbeat was the best I've ever and the instincts was the best I've ever seen in my life. Yeah, I mean, they're showing here on W. On CBS. It's from WCBS in the In the post season where he just just there. He's coming from shortstop. That's the age. That's the ace playoff game with job be Jeremy Giambi. Exactly. He's his slide. He's coming from coming from shortstop cut off a ball from right field, which is not his play, by the way. No, no. Do you know why it became his play because from his position he read Shane Spencer was throwing the ball from the wall. He read that that ball was over. I guess it would have been. T knows Head. It was off line is the cut off, man. So seeing that Tino didn't have a play, He quickly registered the depth perception and the elevated height on the throat and went to where he had no business. Being. My point is he came from shortstop. Yes, that's what I'm saying. He down down to the first base. It's one of the people. No, no. Why? He came from shortstop. I don't know if the tag was actually made. It may have been safe. Exactly, honestly may have been safe. Jeremy Giambi, I think, but you didn't get dirty. You should you don't slide, you should be out. You're right, but he may have been saying you're right. But that's beside the point. You know, the question becomes like, how does how does there become a next Derek Jeter? If there is an opportunity to be next year cheater and I don't know if they're well. I think it's going to have to be someone different like Shohei Otani perfectly. I was with you who captures your imagination for different reasons. Derek did because He was this perfect professional at like 22 years old. He was like, dude, how are you again? Like I'm just in the league doing all these kind of crazy things, but nobody ever talked about him ever. Everything he did was below the radar, and he just he presented as the perfect professional on a team. Um, where winds rookie of the year and they win a World Series and they win a couple of war. And it just it was a consummate just professionalism and in the biggest city with a team that wasn't always that way, you know what I mean. It was like there's the team was always loud, right, as always. The Yankees are ex. The Yankees are why, but Derek Jeter was always steady. And so he became this ground. You know, a grounding force for one of the best teams of of that generation. And now, as I think about these kids that are coming into Major League baseball I don't know if they want to be that, you know, I mean, show you. Otani feels like he does want to be that so maybe he is the next one. This next iconic baseball player that will talk about for generations. The question is, How long can he do what he's doing? Great like Derek did what he did great. For forever right from day one for 20 years, right, so kids Shohei Otani going to be a sub three er, a pitcher, you know, high strikeout guy throwing gas and then also hitting 50 home runs this season. I do it for a couple of years. He's not doing it for 20, and he also came up later and he came up later. Exactly so it's just going to be hard to find someone. Who's that consistent? Yep, with one team. And ultimately, you gotta win. That's that's That's the part that makes this incredibly elusive. Yes, it might be 30 40 50 years before we see something like this, they will be better. There were better players at shortstop When Jeter was playing a rod was one of the no more Now who knows what was authentic with, you know, you know a rod obviously. Took the shortcut there. But you know, there have been no more broke down at the end and whispers about him or whatever. I mean, no, no need to dredge that up. But the point being that you know nobody that was absolutely viewed as 100% authentic by everybody in the game at that point. Uh, you know, nobody looked at Jeter as as the best shortstop. Let him know the best player but used over a bonds. He was never like. You know, one of these Ricky Henderson or or it's crazy because he To not even be the best that your position but to carve out this this legacy, what I think is is very unique about Derek, right? Is that you hear about and we all know about the Yankee history. But truth be told, you know, once Manta retired, and his knees betrayed him, and he's done And you know, after the 65 World Series, which the Yankees lost by the way, and then the seventies certainly the end. The rest of the sixties were baseball graveyard. In the early seventies, they were horrendous, and then they popped in in 76. And they want a couple championships after that, But the Yankee way has always been. You know, these guys who played on one team for a long time and just went right to Cooperstown, DiMaggio mantle, Yogi Bear, er I mean, I could just listen to name all of them. But really after Mantle the next and really the only great Yankee was Reggie in terms of the national, right? Yes, I mean, Tino, beloved Polo Neil, but but I mean, national, But Reggie played on two other teams before he came to the Yankees and a team after it actually, two more after it went to the Angels, and he was with the Orioles in the age. Before that. We remember him as a Yankee because the Yankees are the biggest brandy played for there's no doubt now. The A's also won three championships and and and he broke his leg and he's heard with the Orioles. But My statement stands. Your statement is still the biggest brandy played. Sold to win five championships to to have almost 3500 hits with one team. Uh you know, I don't know at that position where you know, 11 12. Years in, you might have to slide. The third base second base outfield, Robin yell who won back to back MVPs with the Brewers moved to center field. He came up as a 19 year old with Milwaukee. He eventually shifted to center. Want to say when he was about? I'm guessing, but around I'm going to say about 28 is maybe like that's that's an unforgiving spot on the diamond and you look at all the great players in at that position like Ozzie Smith had no power. Um Cal Ripken, who was amazing, But Cal didn't quite have the athleticism of even a Jeter. Some other guys are tainted. Ernie Banks didn't play in the playoffs..

Shane Spencer Phil Rizzuto Jeremy Giambi Ozzie Smith Ernie Banks Marvin Miller Shohei Otani Thursday Ted Simmons Larry Walker Dallas Cowboys Friday Cody Henry Buck Showalter Jeter tomorrow night 20 20 years Cal Ripken

How many committees do they have? I'd put Brad Penny the hall of fame just for the conversation. I had with him before. Pitching against the Yankees in the world series in which his entire staff was telling him quit trying to throw. Oh Ninety eight quit. China's throw ninety eight and then I asked him. What are you going to do? And he's like throw ninety

Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies agree to $26 million, 1-year deal

"Nolan Arnaldo and the Rockies have settled on a one year contract as what it is usual. When you go into arbitration. Ken Rosenthal reports are not as one year twenty six million dollar deal with the Rockies is a record for player through the arbitration process. If you remember the Rockies came in at twenty four which would have also been a record one year arbitration deal are not a wanted thirty million dollars. They settle on twenty six as what usually happens. You split. The difference in everyone goes home. That's that's significant and. While it sure doesn't seem like the Rockies have any aces up their sleeve in terms of recruiting Bryce Harper or landing, you know, they're still alive. Dallas kaikal hasn't been signed. Like, it doesn't seem like the Rockies are saving their money to go. After one of these marquee free agents that are still on the market. But I wonder what this means for Nolan are nano he said when he asked for thirty million dollars that it was what all athletes eight is business. It is a business. And you just heard Ryan leaf say the NFL is a business, but at the same time Nolan has no no other organization than the Rockies. You would want him. I think to be a little less cold and calculating, maybe that's too pollyannaish for the rock from the Rockies perspective. But is he going to be that rigid with the Rockies when they tried to negotiate a long-term deal during or after this year, the Rockies can't play around with this? I said this the other day. They can't risk losing Nolan for nothing. And for those who think that this thing's going to drag out till the end of September. No, it's not it has to be settled by July thirty one or they have to have a strong indication one way or another because they gotta get something for them. Or it's going to set this franchise back five years, and I'm not being I I'm not trying to be alarmist. And I don't think I'm being over the top. That's how important Nolan are not always you could talk about Trevor story and Charlie Blackmon those guys come and go they go up and down Nolan is the guy. He's the face of the franchise. He's their best player. He's the most steady and efficient. Hitter that they have. To me. They can't they can't hang onto him hoping that a whole year convinces them. They gotta try to convince them and a half a year or else they're going to be in a really tough spot. Well, and I'd say now that they've taken care of the whole arbitration thing and avoided that started now, right? Are working on a long term deal. Now. And look I would like to Rockies I mentioned this earlier in the show. The Padres are going to meet with Bryce Harper. I would love for Jeff rise to do that. To but to me. Jeff bridage. Should sit down right now. And all he should do. It's figuring out how he can convince Nolan are not to stay. Because that is the top priority and say what you will about when the Rockies traded Larry Walker or Baldo Jimenez, or any of these others. This will be the Troy to Lewinsky, even this will be bigger than any of those and more detrimental to the Rockies. If they don't handle this correctly. So I say all the time you have time to do other things, Jeff. But this has got to be your focus when you wake up in the morning. And when you go to bed at night figuring out. How to convince Nolan are Nado to stay in purple
