"From a former CIA analyst, Buck Sexton. More rope called Finish us out for the week before we We're able to take off some time here and focus on the Super Bowl. Life, family, friends, things other than politics. Won't that be nice? Larry. Great show. Keep up the good work. Larry. Appreciate that. Thank you so much. You should check out renting full auto firearms. While you're in Orlando. A couple of years ago, I rented an Uzi, but I don't member how much it costs. I didn't try to keep it all day. Of course, the ammo will probably cost more than the rental these days that there's any available. I know they will let foreigners but I'm not sure about someone from New York. Yeah, Larry, those those full auto, firearm rental things. They're very expensive. They usually and as I said, you don't even really get they kind of hold it for you. And you just get to pull. The trigger is how it goes in Vegas, so that's not You know, I'm like, Can I take my fully auto M four home, please? Excuse me. Can I borrow the squad automatic weapon for the weak? I will bring it back in excellent repair. There's no reason to worry, right? You know? Do I need this Browning 50 cow right now? Yes, I think I do. And I will bring it back and I will clean it thoroughly afterwards, you know, no problem. Dan writes. When I wrestled in high school, male versus male, we had weight classes and you had to weigh in before each match to make sure he did not exceed your weight class. Most biological males at birth, even after gender reassignment surgery and hormones would not be able to alter their weight so that they could match up against true biological female competitors. Waits Dan It's an idea, and I think that you're right and how it would work. But I don't think it's uh, gonna happen anytime soon. But I appreciate you thinking outside the box. All right, everybody. "Launch will hopefully take place Monday night. If weather cooperates. I'm that Maddens and This is Bloomberg Wall Street Week with David Westin from Bloomberg Radio. We'll have up the week we welcome now our special contributor Larry Summers of Harvard, so, Larry Great to have you here, particularly because at the very end of the week we had a fair amount of secretary Treasury action there. One of your successors took some action. Second, Mnuchin wrote a letter to the head of the Fed Jay Powell saying, Please give us back that money we gave you for those emergency lending facilities. And you had something to say about that. In fact, you had a tweet in which you said Secretary Paulson taught, referring to Hank Paulson, another predecessor, understood in transition. It was his Job to help the Fed and the incoming administration established a basis for strong cooperative efforts to contain the crisis. Secretary Mnuchin has done just the opposite. So drawing a contrast between these two secretaries. What is going on here, Larry? Into two separate points. One, uh, every previous government I mean, there was plenty of bitterness in the Bush Gore campaign. Really there, Woz? I mean, we all thought that election was stolen. But he didn't occur to me or to anyone who worked with me or to any other Cabinet officer in the Clinton administration not to cooperate fully. In helping the government be ready to do whatever our successors wanted to do. The last thing we envision doing was thwarting their ability to carry out their policies. What Steve Mnuchin Did in writing that letter and making those demands and reducing the authorization was floor. What is clear and incoming Biden administration wants to do? That's just wrong on process terms. Second problem is, it's just incredibly imprudent and reckless. At a time when the pandemic is getting far worse. At a time when we don't really know where this pandemic is going to go before a vaccine. At a time when we don't have any basis for being confident that there's gonna be agreement on fiscal stimulus. To tie the Fed's hands in any way to construct their abilities to act in an emergency. Is the height of foolishness. Why would you throw away a potential insurance policy? Nobody's asking Secretary Manu Shin toe trigger anything toe pull panty money to authorize any checks. He doesn't want to, but preserving the capacity to ensure against financial Armageddon. It's elementary that that's the right thing to do. It's elementary that it's the right thing to do to facilitate the next administration being able to do what it thinks. Is is wise. I I've been surprised by the secretary before, but never more than this, which really does seem to me very much outside the tradition of the office he holds. So this is a transition that at some point presumably will be over and then the same time. There are longer term issues at play here, And just this week, Bloomberg had the new economy for him that you appeared on with Janet Yellen, the former Federal Reserve chair, and one of the subjects was actually Are we saving too much? And are we really in secular stagnation? A term that you really revived some years ago? And she basically totally agree with you? This is part of what she had to say. Central banks need to do what they can within not overstate what it's possible for them to do well. I strongly believe central banks. Need to be independent and need to do everything they can to changes. They've made their not a game changer from the point of view of secular stagnation and bottom line, I agree with wiring on what what's required. So there you go, Larry. Things have changed something the first time. I think that you wish you'd had paper some years ago, when you were sort of an out liar, I think on the subject, but that late leads to the question. Okay of Central banks can't fix this, and we're in secular stagnation. What do we do about what does it mean for longer term economic policy? It means we're gonna have to rely on fiscal policy rather than monetary policy to stabilize the economy. Going forward when we have cyclical fluctuations. It means more generally that an important part of the design of policy is going to have to be assuring that savings or fully absorbed..

"So prior clients who we don't know about they could all be under the microscope as well. Is there any chance I know that universities are going to conduct their own investigations. But if it's anything like the investigations, they do for NCW violations. I'm not gonna you know, put a lot of faith in them. Based on the magnitude of of this indictment that we already know of is there any chance the universities don't have at least a passing understanding that this was going on that even if it was, you know, let's let's just you know, agree, not to acknowledge that it's happening. But, but yeah, of course, we know we knew it's there. Well, we know that the US attorney for the district of Massachusetts in his press conference said that universities were victims to here, and I have several friends whose kids go to these current universities and they've received emails from the president or some big person at the university saying we're victims here, and we're cooperating, and we're conducting internal investigations, but I think as this starts to unspoiled more. We may see more and more that maybe some were some individuals in the universities had to know what was going on. You saw that the guidance counselor at USC in one of these cases were sniffing around because one. Boy who got in under a pole vaulting scholarship. When he wasn't even a pole vaulter in his high school track team started saying, hey, house track going the kids like, oh, no not on the track team. Is this the one where they photo shopped his they photoshopped picture the kid was in the dark. So I think time will start revealing more of these things I feel bad for I was an athlete in college. I feel really bad for the actual athletes who could've used a leg up as a recruited athlete in these colleges. But these dirty college coaches alleged dirty college coaches gave higher precedence to getting money than bringing an athlete in the recruited athlete spot. 'cause we don't know who those those young athletes are. Yeah. And oftentimes athletes who this is their their primary entree into higher education. Oftentimes, these are underprivileged kids, and frankly, oftentimes, they're a minority kids, which brings us to the question of a political component. I raised this. When I first talked about some people push back, saying don't politicize this this isn't about politics. But I look at some of these names who were part of this indictment. They come from Hollywood. They come from Wall Street, they come from the tech world, and they all seem to be the same people who are participating in the political sphere from the left side of the equation who who sort of grandstand sanctimoniously about how conservatives and Republicans are cold hearted and unfeeling and not wanting to help the underprivileged and yet here, they are cheating the system on behalf of their own rich children, and my misguided in that or is there a pattern here that is worth at least discussing. Well. I'm actually working on a piece on on that as well. And what I've found so far, and I'll publish it next week and let you know about it is that you're right. These individuals, many of whom are not household names. But bigwigs in all sorts of businesses and whatnot. We're very active many of them in giving what appears to be very lawful and appropriate donations to politicians are wannabe politicians on the left and right. And I I ran across many of the names who gave a politician to politicians on the left, but there are others who gave to politicians on the right and believe it or not the Huffington Post and CNN have done some pretty good work on this laying out the the donations to these people, but we'll have more information next week. But it seems like they were pretty active. There's no suggestion that those politicians who were beneficiaries of that money helped in any way with this college scheme. So with that on the record. Yeah. And that's not what they were very active in in and donating because they're well to do. They had discretionary money to give to politicians. Yeah. And it really has more to do with the hypocrisy. And sort of what's baked into our culture right now. And why we should take a Paxi to no one. With regard to our concern for the underprivileged or for that matter for the best interests of our children were or kids got into college through the front door. Well, yes, so far, and you know, if my kids going to college that's how they're gonna get in through the front door, which is, you know, old singer here had three doors. So you talked about in his pitch the front door the standard way that most people listening to get their kids into college the back door where you give millions of dollars when you give a building to the school, and you hope that they're going to wink, wink, nod nod let your kid in or then the singer special, which is the side door, which was cheating. Well, and by the way, the front door, which so many of us have been I've just gone through a twice with my two. Oldest it ain't easy, and it's arduous, and it seems arbitrary, and it's gut wrenching sometimes. And and because we've all been there as parents now or so many of us have. That's why this story resonates. That's why lead with what I lead in my piece. I mean, this this issue has pissed off. Everybody in town. That is hyper politicizing everything. The first cycle of stories didn't jump to. It's a Republican or democrat thing. It's it's a it pisses everyone off and so and rightly so because everyone wants the best for their children. Right. No matter where you're from you want your children to achieve and you realize that getting a good education as part of that. And by the end, good good on the Justice department under our attorney general in our prior Torney general sessions for really focusing in on this honing and getting this done. Well, it's really great work. And it came up because it was a boring securities fraud case and the guy was getting ready to face the music. He said, oh, by the way. Can I help myself because this Yale soccer coach often offered to get my kid into the school? If I give him four hundred thousand dollars, and then you can imagine those young a USA's like what I really really tell me more that guy on the wire, which led to singer getting on the wire. And that's another thing broke Kelly Stimpson's back and his back with gusto. Thank you for joining us. Of course, the senior legal fellow with the Heritage Foundation writing now at daily signal. Great stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing more from your colleague. Thank you for joining. Larry great.

"Coop clogging the escalator remember that one from six years ago with apparently made the rounds again in the last couple of days. This is a problem. What are we going to do about it? I mean that what do you wanna do about a four one five eight ten Rioja? Sunnyvale ryobi. You're on KGHM with Ethan Bearman, even I share your sentiment. I used to love public transportation. I used to love getting on the bar at occasionally talking to people people watching and then it became unsafe recently. I went to a Bart board meeting where they were talking about in new cameras, adding to their police force and every single person who got up to give public statements were vehemently against the idea of any form of new software new technologies, new cameras, new police new station agents, all that they just want business as usual, and it confused the heck out of me. I remember a time where I was on the Bart wants and a guy got up and kicked out every single light in the ceiling. Walked stepping over people to kick out light. And nobody glass was dropping on people. Nobody did anything. Yes. People are scared while you got a couple of problems in California. Ryobi people. Are scared won an overall. Remember? I was mugged man. You probably it's probably don't even know the strategy. Grigor friends mugged on the Washington Mall. In a bright sunny day in eighth grade for our civics trip to DC, I was the only Iran to adults around us to say, hey, we're being mugged help us adults would literally turn and walk away from me until I could find a park ranger. You know, my little boy scout southbound found a park ranger came the end up catching the kids, they got arrested, etc. But the adults wanted nothing to do with it when he child was saying, we're being mud people. Don't want to get involved. This is why we have law enforcement because we're too scared and often we're also frightened though legal consequences of getting involved. We're getting hurt ourselves as well. Even what do we do about people who don't even want to prevent those things? We're all upset about Neil Wilson were all upset about. You know, I think most people are upset that you know, gangs of young adults regardless of their race. Because I know that was a hot topic for a while. But regardless of the race gangs of young adults with storm the trains, and rob people of everything they had and yet there's groups of people out there. Who say like, no, we don't need more police. We don't need more. We don't need higher turnstiles. We don't need nothing. They just want business as usual that counterintuitive to our society. I I don't get it. Here's what it is real. It's enjoy our conversations. Thanks for calling in. It's called leadership. We lack leaders. We don't have leaders leaders paint a vision and explain what it is that we're trying to achieve and then the explain why we want to go there with them to this vision that they've painted name for me the last person in the bay area that you thought boy, this is a strong leader. And you're not gonna name one with bar because you can't think of one we've had very varieties of some forms of leaders in various forms. But that's what a leader. Does. There's no leadership. That's happening right there. Ryoko thanks for bringing in four one five eight hundred eighty eight ten Mike in Pleasanton, Mike, you're on KGHM with Ethan Bearman. Hey, so what I think I would do is. Yeah. If you gotta add more. Police officers but make them undercover just like air marshals where. But a public campaign out there that we now have Bart Marceau's undercover. And try to you know, maybe put one on every train, but just with that campaign alone. You all know Bart Marshall on the train or not that could probably take you out for causing problems. The other problem is just two people wanting to put stuff on YouTube and video instead of stopping it. Right. Didn't tackle that crazy guy today. I would've went over and kicked him in the head and probably killed him. Just because he's threatening people's lives. We got too many people wanting to you too baby thing and get hit instead of taking I wouldn't say wallet own hands. But stopping it, right? Said of being a bystander watching it take place like a movie or something? No. That's an interesting point one. We had a couple of different points or one. Let's not kill anybody. Just restrain the individual until bar police can arrive unless somehow it's not safe. But I like this idea of of the undercover police, I think that you need more of that. Because they're the ones who will be you know, because look we know that uniform presence matters uniformed presence reduces crime in every scenario uniform presence undercover presence provides the opportunity to catch people who maybe aren't doing the crime in front of the uniform presence. But as soon as the uniform presence, isn't there? They feel empowered. Powered to commit whatever the crime is that they're gonna commit that's undercover comes into play. I support that idea. So if there's one hundred new officers, maybe you make thirty of them undercover forty of them undercover and sixty or uniform. I don't know what that looks like I would allow professionals to make that recommendation of what that should look like then Thirdly, Mike. You're absolutely right. We live in this age way. Too often people will stand there with their phone and not intervene. Not call nine one one not do anything because they just wanna film at for some actually really sick, and twisted reason that is totally inhuman by the way to do that to another human being just watch them. Get hurt watched them be abused. I think that is a really sick part of our society right now that hopefully we'll get turned around. My thanks so much for the call four one five eight hundred eighty eight ten Larry in Antioch. Larry, you're on KGHM with Ethan Bearman. Thank you. My solution is to do exactly what you've just talked about leadership. My director has been director since nineteen ninety four twenty four years. And in that time has been a steady going downhill. My idea he's up for reelection. I'm voting for for his opponent. 'cause we need somebody new in there who can actually bring leadership the bars who can actually get a general manager hire a general manager will do something to fix the system. Yeah. I mean, it's that is probably the best point is if you feel like nothing has changed for the better, and you live in a district, your Bart director is up for reelection. Maybe you ought not to vote the person back in especially if they've been there since one thousand nine hundred four and you feel like things have not gone in the right direction. I. Don't like this tendency that we have there's this human nature that we have which is thanks for the call. Larry great, great to hear from you four one five eight hundred eighty eight ten we have this nature in us, which is and this benefits incumbents across the board. I don't care what political office your time. We have this thing where it's like. Yeah. But their mind director, congressman Senator whatever therefore well me now. Hey, look, they work for me. They'll spew some garbage about what they do even though. I don't feel like anything's changed or anything's happened in a way that I would want it to and or in the case if you live in Steve kings district in Iowa, he loves white nationalist. Hey, maybe I ought not to vote for another white nationalist to get reelected. I'm not comparing any Bart supervisor to that at all obviously director, I should say. But that's just what happens we get stuck in our pattern where really. No, they're an incumbent. So and what the heck I'll just vote for them now. But for the opposite vote for the person challenging the incumbent. Maybe if you don't feel like things are working in the right direction. So bart. What are we gonna do about? This chainsaw wielding people murders happening on Bart. I want to hear your suggestions. For one five eighty eighty eight ten. Taking a look at K G O traffic. We still have a three car accident.

"Guys need to have mardi on more often with Gary and Larry great stuff. 707 veteran listeners. You said veteran veteran listeners. Yeah. The fight. The funny part was so Marty does I can't help it. He won't admit it. That's tough year. When you're you know, and the teams going south, and you just have to keep talking week after week, but he can pull it off the take a couple calls, and we we're gonna have some fun with the the one hit wonders. So we'll ask you. The one one that jumped out at me is and this is on an official official. So we have the text line weighing five three houses. I don't think Gary started Marti's career. The question is who did and why okay six five makes a trade and rides off on a Mongoose. Larry's line of the day. That is good. You'll never get me. If you're saves and all of a sudden, go sit in a room in a thirty year old or knock on the door and say, hi, you still there, you know. Hey, David in Berkeley. Go ahead. Dave, you're on Camby are then we are going to do one hit wonders the one surprise on that list. Larry rattled off with Joe name. Good. God. I mean that guy irrevelant tonight he Super Bowl three football. You know? I didn't go too. Well, after that, it was a bunch of knees knee surgeries. And then eventually finished with the Rams. Yeah. Well, he came into football limping right? You know, he was go ahead. Dave are you healthy on gay? I I am healthy. He also revolutionized the athlete entertainer. Yes. So. The athlete left, and he just flat out had to entertain that didn't work. So. No it didn't enjoy mardi Lurie with us. I did. I actually was it. He was still in the room. I thought it'd be interesting to get his thoughts on this. So I, but I want I want your guys because. Thanks. What are you got before we run you out of here as much as members of that tribe learning? I would say what you guys are just chopped liver. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. It again. On your way out of the demographic. Let me let me just run this three when you guys can just go at it. If you want thank you as I'm listening to your comments about who. Should they go for an and what's one surprise? And I'm listening to the idea that tomorrow tomorrow or next year's another building years. What if instead of looking at the top that we talked about not stepping aside, but bringing in someone like Mike Metheny now, I already broke that story about three weeks ago. Larry woods. Just hammering me. And I said Mike Metheny caught for the giants. Get a good job in Saint Louis is always I question what happened there with the cardinals. But it's not. Guys. We're talking about you know, about the manager. It's not about the manager. It's not Boccioni. Didn't do anything wrong this year. He he was handed at outfield that is far and away the worst outfield in major league baseball far and away. I mean, come on hundred pants retired. He just didn't tell anybody Gorky commanders was really good this year for gore Keyser Nandes. And and they didn't have anyone Shaw Duggar and all these Austin Slater this left-field parade of four four eight guys hasn't been very good. So they don't have an outfield. What you could have John McGraw? You could have Connie Mack. You could have Whitey Herzog. You could sparky Anderson. You you could have you anybody managing this team. It's about you have to have twenty five man roster. You got to score runs. It's what extra-base hits the list of the teams of the best most extra-base hits in baseball nine of the top ten teams are are playoff bound. And and the giants only twenty nine th and extra base hits. They have to get more dangerous and build a lineup pitching. It's not about de. It's about build a lineup of dangerous hitters, and then guess what? All these guys are going to be pretty good managing options. At that point. A dave. I'm sorry. You came in here and got buried by. Larry. I I enjoyed you. All right. Oh, here's Andrew in Texas with a different line of attack. What part of Texas Andrew? Yes. So here's my question. Andrew what part of Texas? Are you in? I live in Colleen, Texas where Fort Hood is Fort Hood. Okay. Yeah. Near near near Austin. We've been there. Hot Austin is the place to be. But my fear you gotta speak. You don't care about. Don't you? A place to be awesome. The place to be for who know often is definitely the place to be exactly in Texas. As a California transplant. The the culture shock is much easier transitioning to Austin that it would be say, Dallas hilarie. Why you move the damn taxes? Correct. The military. Yeah. Okay. Well, whatever. There. You just said it you want to attack a man that has not been attacked go ahead. It's not an attack. I guess what? I'm afraid of is. You know, you guys are thrown out all these great names for GM candidates. And they're great candidates. But my fear is you know, what candidate who has great candidate. Whereas their pick of jobs. He's gonna wanna come to a place where the two previous GM's are still employed in the organization, you know, even if they're given the title of oh, you're in charge. You're the top. I I I agree with you. And that's why you maybe what you have to wait and see if it's a big powerful guy then. Yeah. Then maybe hey, I want I don't even wanna look at sage face. Young guys trying to get in. There isn't going to have to say, I don't wanna look at saving. I don't wanna look it happens though. A lotta time. It happens a lot. Name Colletti when he took over the dodgers GM job stained cast, and was was still there from the previous regime, and I I believe it's it's not as uncommon as you would think many of these GM's are in the background. But I hear you. I mean, that's why I asked franey is the person who's going to be hired going to have total control. Or is he gonna have Larry Baer whispering? What you know what? No, no, we want. We don't want to go too long too young because we need to sell tickets today. And then he's got Sabin over here going. You know, what I would do it this way because I believe in pitching and defense. I mean is this person can have autonomy to come in. I think that's really the key. I think if savings there, it's okay. As long as the guy's got total autonomy. Andrew you want honesty, three bigwigs who just contributed gigantic sums of money to come in and sit with Larry and I have walked in the room. Gary don't be don't we'll just trying to focus on the person on the line..

"All right welcome back honored to have on the show senator tim kaine almost vice president of the united states welcome senator hey larry great to be with you yet don't believe fake news i feel like it looks so i'll talk about that in a little bit but there's so many things going on right now center and thank you so much for taking time out to speak with us today i you know it's so funny as i'm saying these words i was like man it'd be so great if if anybody could just call senator call somebody say please help what's going on give us some insight into the process i i wanna get your taken there's breaking news right now and i'm recording this and january twentieth on a wednesday and i think the president just issued an executive order putting out the fire that he started i believe trying to so yeah it's interesting that they were recording his june twenty is world refugee day so that they every year where we think about the needs of refugees all over the globe and the put executive were still digging into it but it basically says look if you it clearly says this if you come to the border and cross and you're here illegally right we will not separate you from your family as we figure out what to do unless there's some you know some showing that the child may be endangered by the family member there with but it doesn't answer another question that i'm digging into which is a lot of people are coming to our border they're not here legally they're coming in i want to file for asylum so they're trying to take advantage of a legal process that the us has long provided for people who are fleeing extreme situations the that's what we're no longer going to allow silom for violence or domestic abuse but it's a little unclear you're not exactly here illegally if you come to a port of entry and say i wanna for silent what's going to happen about that and then the second thing that's very obvious and obvious concern what about the twenty four hundred kids that are in these places separated parents been separated yeah what are you going to do to get them back together one heartbreaking story that appeared in the papers right before father's day was of a honduran father who came here with his wife and three year old son he came after his brotherinlaw was murdered by drug gangs and copan honduras i lived in honduras many years ago and when his child was taken away from him he had a panic attack and and fought back they put him in jail and he committed suicide and and so i think there's going to be some we'd need to stay on this administration about the reunification of these families that were so heartlessly separated you bring an interesting point about hunters and what goes on for persons life in countries like that where you have teenagers who come of age and gang members approach them and give them an ultimatum you join us or you know sorry no more life for you you know people that flee those situations story of a mom told her son to run after he'd been beaten you know just to run for the border whatever well what is it about hachem most americans really don't know what's actually happening with the immigration situation on the southern border yeah larry we i think those of us in atlanta work we have to do a better job of describing it because i'm gonna take it to another level it's not just honduras is i'll use hundreds of it's not just that the country they're so violent that parents make this sophie's choice type of sending their kid away or even the parent company child aleve the violence and under is related to the united states it's it's us consumption of illegal drugs grown in colombia and mexico and other places that are transiting north and the us dollars to pay for the drugs or transmitting south and all that money goes into these tiny poor communities the gangs are fighting like hell to be the top dog and get the money and so the violence that's driven in these neighborhoods is largely driven around drug trade that's that is there to feed in american consumer so that that it's not that these kids are coming to the us and we are unconnected.
