Wet Notes - 7-4-21

"This is wet notes here on scuba shock radio for sunday july fourth two thousand and twenty one first up today i wanna talk about re fest two thousand and twenty one this october. The reef environmental educational foundation will again be holding refenced from thursday october fourteenth to sunday october. Seventeenth in key largo. That's four days of some great activity. The festivities kickoff on thursday. And one o'clock. You can then get a couple of days of diving in on friday and saturday morning with a two tank dive from either key divers amaury dive resort or essence. Those charters run about ninety dollars and they go out at eight am. If you wanna do a kayak tour you could also do that. For sixty dollars with florida bay outfitters. There are seven afternoon workshops and seminars and activities at john pennekamp park the coral reef restoration foundation. The history of diving museum and the florida keys. Wild bird sanctuary. Wow this sounds like a great event. Unfortunately i won't be able to make it down due to a family obligation but this sounds really good. Be sure to check out repressed. That's reef fest. Two thousand twenty one on their website. Well who watches the tv. Show curse of oak island. I think matt has watched every episode. And i think they're still searching for treasure but i came across an interesting article about one of the guys on the show. I guess tony sampson had a strange situation happen about a year ago tony's frequently on the show and he runs a tour company called salty door. Salty dog tours. Well he was taking some tourists out when one of his guests hat blew off so quickly turned the boat around to fetch the hat. And that's when he spotted something else a voter in the water. Apparently the boater was on his maiden voyage with this new boat when it capsized and he couldn't get to his life jacket because it was tied to the boats seat ono so tony fortunately rescued the voter in what is called the oak island triangle triangle. I guess the boat subsequently washed up on oak island now at least those guys found something there about a year ago. Olympus announced that they were getting out of the digital imaging business and that they would not be making cameras any longer and that would have been a shame if these Tech this technology went by the wayside. I really liked my Olympus t g six. well don't worry. A new company named 'em digital solutions is producing the old olympics. Cameras binoculars audio gear. They took over in january. Two thousand twenty one. Their website is get olympus dot com. Now if you want to know more about the company checkout oem dash digital solutions dot com. This company is based out of tokyo. And it's led by sha guinea saga motto all digital solutions employees about two thousand people with evaluation of twenty seven billion yen or about three hundred and thirty three million. Us dollars the oem comes from the nineteen seventies oem solutions that they put in place to make cameras smaller more rugged and quieter. This is great news especially for us olympus fans. Here's some sobering news out of florida. The manatees are under stress as of june fourth. This year. Seven hundred and eighty two manatees have died in two thousand twenty one alone and that's a one hundred and fifty one percent increase from the three hundred and thirty one that died during the same period last year to put this in perspective. The record number of deaths for manatees in a year is eight hundred. Twenty one or eight hundred and twenty four and that was in two thousand eighteen. This increase is so dramatic that representative vern buchanan from florida wrote a letter to the us fish and wildlife services to change their status from threatened to endanger and that's the highest level of protection here in the us. The florida manatee used to be on the endangered list until two thousand and seventeen when their numbers rose. Above six thousand six hundred they now estimate a census of about seventy five hundred but as we can see that number is going in the wrong direction. Now what's the cause food availability. The seagrass is being killed off by oversaturation of nutrients and the manatees simply. Starve to death. Not sure how a change in status will solve the sad scenario but we need to start someplace. Well it's summer. And i know that a lot of people like to catch up on summer reading while they're on vacation we'll scuba diving. Magazine just published a list of books that you might consider in their armchair adventure section. A couple of book stood out. One of them was in oceans deep courage innovation and adventure beneath the waves. And that's written by bill steve. And it's a history of our underwater presence. He covers submarines saturation diving and recreational gear. Bill also goes into the impacts of aro vs versus in-person exploration. You can pick up this book in ocean deep for about fifteen dollars in paperback. Now the second book is exploration deep ocean the first descent to the bottom of all five of the world's oceans and it's written by josh young. The book covers the exploits of victor scovill and his team on their history-making mission. You can find this book in hardcover for a little over twenty one dollars time to kick back with some good summer reading and finally here on wet note if you're a collector of vintage gear or want to start mark your calendar for the vintage scandal auction on july seventeenth. The auction is run by the nation's attic and you can register at live. Auctioneers dot com now. The auction starts at ten. Am central standard time. You can go to the site now and take a peek at all the cool stuff you can also register embiid early. The first part of the auction folks who focuses on vintage scuba gear from the nineteen forties to the nineteen seventies things like regulators knives mask cetera. Then it switches to maritime artifacts and closes out with the really expensive stuff. Those classic military commercial hardhats. I missed the last one. Because i was out diving. But we'll definitely try to tune into this next one get set up early and register. It moves pretty quickly when when the auction goes off. And don't miss out on that special piece of scuba history. Well that's it for wet notes. For sunday fourth two thousand and

"Last year my goal was to do a segment of your next dive where i featured key largo dive mecca here in the united states. I wanted to time this segment for just after we returned from key. Largo in april of two thousand and twenty. Well we all know how that turned out. We did not get there and again in two thousand and twenty one. We were not able to plan out an excursion as we would have hoped to. Two thousand and twenty two however is on the horizon. But i didn't wanna wait any longer to talk about key largo so here we go with your next dive where we travel to key largo florida. I think i've mentioned it before here on the podcast that my first is after getting a certification where with it's a dive located at the marriott hotel on the overland highway in key largo and it was fantastic. How about your first real dive being on a real historic wreck the city of washington a ship that was in havana harbor when the us main exploded and sank now. There are many reasons to choose key largo as your dive destination. Especially if you live in the eastern part of the united states first off. It's easy to get to. You can either fly into fort lauderdale. Which is my preferred airport. As i find it logistically navigate or miami which is a little closer to key Key largo you just hop in your rental car. That is if you can find one these days and head on down now. Let's talk a little bit about the dive. Operators in key largo as you can imagine being to dive. Mecca that it is. There are quite a number of operators to choose from it's a dive at the marriott is no longer operating but i will talk about two of the operators. I'm familiar with. They are horizon divers and rainbow reef now right after only a couple of months. After i did that first trip to key largo i returned and at that time. I drove with horizon divers back. Then they were located in marina at mile marker one hundred of the overseas highway and that was right next to the courtyard by marriott. Which at the time was a radison. It was very convenient to roll out of bed. Get a quick bite to eat and stroll over to the dive. Shot horizon has moved however and they are now located on the overseas highway at mile marker. One oh six. That's the dive shop in a retail store. Their boats are located about a half a mile up the road next to a place called shipwrecks oceanside now rainbow reef has taken over the old horizon diver facility at the mile marker one hundred marina additionally they also bought out ocean divers on the other side of the marina and have quite a large operation. Now the last time we were in key largo. We stayed at the courtyard and dove with horizon. We were going to go back to key. Largo in two thousand twenty and planned to die with rainbow reef. We didn't make it down there now. If you're looking to do more technical diving then. I think horizon divers maybe a better choice for the shallow reefs that i like rainbow reef might be a good option as they have those big forty six foot newton dive boats now. I have to admit that. I've never done the deeper wrecks down there like spiegel grove. Where the dwayne bid. But i love the shallow wrecks like the city of washington. The hanan bell. Also known as mike's wreck and especially the ben would. They are teeming with fish life and are great places to do fish identification and surveys. You can also experience of great dives on elbow reef molasses reef and french reef another great shallow dive through the book spurring grove. Karl is christ of the abyss. Dry rocks you can grit some great photo opportunities there. The water temperatures in key largo range from the mid seventies in the winter months to the mid eighties in the peak of the summer. When i dove in april of two thousand and nineteen. I was pretty comfortable on the shallow reefs with my three millimeter wetsuit. Only wanna do to morning dives. You can free up your afternoons for some topside adventures. A trip to reef headquarters Is interesting or you can take a tour of the coral restoration foundation and just down. The road is the history of diving museum in l. morada. I was really looking forward to getting to the museum last year and hope that i can make it down there next april. Talk about the dining. While if you're staying at the courtyard on the marina you don't have to get in your car and drive someplace you can just scroll stroll over skippers doc right on the marina. They have some great conch chowder. There and if you want a burger or some pub food than walk a little bit further down to dr sharpies shark bite grill. You'll probably run into some of the dive staff there hanging out now. Another great place to eat is the pilot house and that's located right near the coral restoration foundation very close by and and if you're in the mood for pizza then upper crust pizza at mile marker one zero one point six. Just make sure it's not. Wednesday is their closed. We made that mistake. So as i wrap up this segment. If you've been diving in key largo. I hope that you will agree that it is really a cool place to dive. And if you've never been there. I would encourage you to consider putting a trip there on your counter. I regret having taken fourteen years between visits. I'm not gonna make that mistake again.

"David, the Marine Corps War face. You've got a war face. This doesn't sound like around. You're shooting a gun that sounds like a James Bond villain. Mr Bond. I am Largo, the nine millimeter Largo. But really one is what is the nine Millimeter Largo? Nine mil. Mira Largo is a modern cartridge. It came out in 1901, about the same time as the nine millimeter Luger. Design same year. And it is basically 91 cartridge with a longer case of the nine million everybody is familiar with. That one is nine by 19 9 Millions by 9 19 millimeters in the Case, But the nine Largo is four millimeters longer is 1923 and because of that won't chamber in Yeah. Modern nine millimeters. You have to get against 74 or I'm a 23 Winchester or 38 super issue that in those guns, the advantage or the allure of it Now is it's a sir Plus. Cartridge is the military surplus. You know, some countries went with the nine Largo, in fact, came out with a car being a rifle version. Fire. That cartridge called it the story of the Spanish destroyer on and it found mean but it's only shot that Little 123 green bullet. The point is, you know is surplus sama. And because it was military surplus, you could find it. And, uh, at good prices in quantity, you know some years ago online and you can order it and have it delivered to your door. And you have some animal if he had a gun that would shoot it. Yeah. And this is the time where you you know, you kind of dig it back in the safe and all. I forgot. I had that one. Or should I keep hanging on to it or should I go out and shoot it? Well, that's what we decided to do. You know, Like what? My guns and I look, I got 200 rounds left, and I've had it for over 20 years. No, and it's still good. Now they feel the primaries. You know the one thing about the military animal. They Generally feel the primary so it you know, they keep the moisture out near thing over over time, but I've had it for, like, over 20 years in the cardboard box. It looked like I made him in my garage. And you kind of pointed out boxes look older than me. Yeah, it could be. I don't know. Right came out the forties. But the point is, you know, they will shoot a gun with him animal that you could call obsolete. I mean, you don't see much length larger on the shelves anymore, but it still shoots just fine, And it's basically the same power level as a nine millimeter. Every shot of the nine Largo that we took. The shot. We did not take With our nine millimeter boy or 45. Which is hard to find right now, And when you do find it, it's going to cost you a little bit. So the point is, if you have a cartridge or gun that you just haven't shot for a while, and you maybe might have forgot that you had it. Been mine had a nine mackerel issues. The 1918 cartridge. Which you know is incompatible with nano meter. The same idea there. You could get some surplus animal there and shoot hit for a lot less than you can. The Nine millimeter. The point is, you know, it might have something that you've got about and they got out the rain so that the Shoot up your your prize them all right now, and that's that's the whole point here, getting through this ammunition shortage. But speaking of which you're still going out to the range with classes and in some cases actually supply the ammunition. Well, I have ladies only class of December 13th. Intro to shooting. I do supply guns and animal for that class. That one that's full and basic and again. It was late, ladies. Only a same day is also full. But I do have Essential handgun skills. December 12 And that requires 100 rounds. And if you cannot find it, I have a very limit supply of animal that I can offer to my students for the class so you can take the glass. I have two openings left on that. December 12th and find out more about that. And okay, if your partner's training dot com Okay, see Fire train on Facebook and Instagram has always guns and ammo for everybody and Mike. I know a lot of people who have shooters on their Christmas list this year. I don't doubt that we have a lot of them in here. Shopping as well. Lee, one of the things they need to look at. Is the Springfield Hellcat. I've got that in black or flat, dark earth right now. The flattened doctor. It looks pretty bad ass. I mean, that looks commando style. It doesn't do that very reminiscent of the current military. Nine millimeter on the cell cats are by Springfield so that that's the that's the newer version of their nine millimeter in it. Yes, This is the most recent gun that they have out. It's the super compact, yet high capacity. Carry gun. It's very cool. It comes with 1 11 Round magazine 1 13 Round magazine, each one of those the flat darker of pistols, 5 49, the black 5 19 just in time for the holiday, too. Flash Flood Warning Issued for Broward, Miami-Dade County After Eta's Landfall

"Very heavy rainfall. There's a flash flood warning now in effect meeting Flooding imminent or is occurring and that's for Broward County, northern Miami Dade County. That's until 11 this morning. One area of rainfall looks like it's lined up from about highly up toward a Cooper City into southern Broward County and extends out over and just east of Key Biscayne. There's another band now just west and getting at the homestead and getting into west Central Miami Dade County. It extends back into North Korea, Largo and it is raining Jimmy, probably at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour here, so more flooding possible Not likely, along with some strong, gusty winds of some of the winds make us 40 possibly the 50 MPH. I do feel that we should be out of the worst of the rain and thunderstorms. Sometime today, but still lingering showers and better storms tonight and tomorrow. Yeah.

Real quick. It's sort of like this. For example, in my house when my Children come in, and they take their shoes off, I say to them. The expectation is that you will put your shoes away when you come into the house. You don't just leave them on the floor in front of the door. And then the next time they come in, If they leave them in front of the door, e stated them again. The rules haven't changed. Please put your shoes away. And then the next time they come in its the same, right. So when a rule is a rule, you just followed the damn rules. Okay? Yeah, but he didn't want Teo and at the hardware store. They were like you need to go. And he was like, I don't want to go. So what he did next is the thing that makes him a cove. Idiot. Can you imagine what it was? He did. Ah, licked something. No. He turned around and coughed directly in the face of a male employee at the ace Hardware. Oh, God. And then he took a small step backward. And slapped the victim with the backside of his hand. So first he coughed on him, and then he backhanded him. And then he was ushered out of the business now on the way out of the business. He then also struck a customer in the faces well. Then he threatened to burn down the hardware store. Once they got him out of the store. He fled on foot. However, the Largo Police department were able to track him down on. He said that he was defending himself. But he did strike the guy, but he was doing it in self defense. Because what is that word? I don't understand. I don't know. Stacey Abrams Spearheads Campaign Against Voter Suppression

"It's morning edition from NPR news I'm David green and I may tell Martin after the chaos of the Iowa caucuses there is new scrutiny about how the US conducts selections when you partisan voting rights group is focusing on elections in swing states this year it's called fair fight and it's led by Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams Abrams got a lot of national attention in two thousand eighteen after she lost a close race for governor in an election that was clouded by allegations of voter suppression here's an here's Debbie Elliot a few thousand volunteers are spending a Saturday morning in a hotel conference room in Macon Georgia for a boot camp of sorts on voter suppression good morning in everybody Hillary Holly is organizing director for fair fight action the group that's waging a campaign against voter suppression in the twenty twenty election we are walking into year that's going to be exciting little bit stressful we're gonna be working a lot participants call themselves democracy warriors people like whole worker of lane Morgan Johnson make every single cam Johnson is motivated to be here in part because her sister was removed from George's voter rolls under a mass purge of people who have not voted since two thousand twelve or responded to mailed notices from election officials Johnson thinks it's part of a broader strategy to curtail voting rights reducing their opposition don't wanna lose power I mean we're seeing that nation why it's depressing and that's why I'm just trying to be active in a way that I can my parents worked for civil rights in and we're not for going backwards this training is part of an effort launched by Georgia Democrats Stacey Abrams an African American woman who broke new ground in our two thousand eighteen campaign for governor she energized new democratic voters and lost by less than fifty five thousand votes in a largely Republican state there was a record turnout for a mid term election but also hours long waits at some polls election server security breaches and allegations that strict adherence on signature matches dampens participation Abrams says the defeat galvanized her to launch fair fight in the wake of the election my mission was to figure out what works could I do even if I didn't have the title of governor what what can I do to enhance to protect our democracy because the voting rights is the the pinnacle power in our country verified is training grassroots advocates lobbying for new election laws and arguing in federal court the George's election system is unconstitutional Abrams says long lines precinct closures and purging voter rolls are all barriers that disproportionately impact minority voters most of us understand voter suppression as the nineteen sixties images of Billy clubs and hoses and dogs barking aggressive interference but in the twenty first century voter suppression looks like administrative errors it looks like user error it looks like mistakes but it is just is intentional and just as insidious George's current secretary of state Republican Brad wraps and Parker acknowledges there were some problems because of the high turnout in two thousand eighteen but rejects the notion that cleaning up voter rolls is an attempt to gain partisan advantage no what we're trying to do is make sure that the you know Lexus are clean fair and accurate this is something that has been going on in Georgia long before Republicans were in charge in Georgia and courts have upheld the state's authority to purge the voter last after fair fight suit but other election related lawsuits are pending attorney Jack Evans is chairman of the Georgia chapter of the Republican National lawyers association Georgia is ground zero for election law Evans says the focus is here because Georgia is becoming competitive the reality is you know George's changing and there's a lot of transplants coming in from the west coast and the northeast and there's also changing demographics so I think it is time for Republicans to grow the tent but I definitely think it's woke up a lot of Republicans in Georgia now Abrams is expanding fair fight to reach in hopes of putting other states in play she recently traveled to Florida for a town hall with college students to talk about ways they could protect their vote for verifying voter registration for learning how to ask for a provisional ballot if you're turned away at the polls political scientist Andrea Glaspie of Emory University says there are a lot of national groups doing voting rights work but fair fight stands out because it's been able to use the energy around Abrams electoral defeat to try to reap benefits for other Democrats in this election cycle her story was compelling she got a lot of attention by being the first black woman to be nominated by a major party for gubernatorial seat and she was really smart and you know strike while the iron was hot in order to play that type of organization together fair fights political action committee is raising the millions of dollars including a five million dollar contribution from democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg and it's pumping some of that money into battle ground states early fair fight C. E. L. Lauren grow Largo says the idea is to beef up the democratic ground game around voting we're in the mission of making sure our full citizenry can vote we also happen to think that when all Americans are able to vote Democrats win she says they've invested more than a million dollars and sent dozens of staffers in eighteen states to ramp up democratic voting rights infrastructure things like establishing voter hot winds and creating voter protection teams to be in place for the primaries so they can prepare for the general election gathering information and data what is order struggle with when election administrator struggle with what support are they gonna need critics say fair fight is a vehicle for Stacey Abrams political aspirations Abrams counters that she's been doing civil rights work her entire career but acknowledges our interest in higher office including the presidency I see myself as a warrior for democracy but I'm also someone who has been training my entire life to do more as for this year's race Abrams hasn't endorsed any of the democratic presidential candidates but says show welcome a phone call from the eventual nominee when they're looking for a running mate Debbie Elliot NPR news

Serendipity for the 'Mueller, She Wrote' podcast

"Muller? She wrote has been a weekly podcast since two thousand seventeen examining the developments in the investigation by Robert Muller into Russian interference in the two thousand sixteen election episodes are occasionally taped before a live audience and one was scheduled for last night at Largo here in Los Angeles, and then serendipity struck when it was announced that the mole report would be released that same day, the podcast hosts are stand up comedians, Jellison Johnson, Jordan, Coburn and a woman who only goes by her initials, and now please welcome the host of more. She wrote. He g won't reveal her full name because she's a federal employee whose prohibited by law from participating in partisan political activities, I was in the audience for last night's taping. And then spoke with Jordan, Coburn and AG afterward. And I began by asking AG how the timing of the mole report changed her show last night. It literally changed like twenty minutes before we got here because we've had the same structure for live shows that we've been doing for all two of our previous life show, so far I was like we can't just act like it's a normal day. You guys we have a really great show planned for you that we just scrapped, and we were probably gonna go right off the cuff or this called going and cold. But we hope you enjoy it. We're going to do some sabotage. We're gonna do some fantasy indictment league. Because you we normally keep it a little bit more light hearted and fun and have some games involved. You know in the live show. We'd like a quiz section on our news stories. But yeah, we had to switch it last minute. You go by the initials AG, and for people who don't understand does does that have something to do with the hatch act, and why are your initials in the hatch act in some way connected for people who don't understand what the hatch act is. I'm going out of my way extra to not violate the hatch act because I work for Trump's executive branch. And so the hatch act basically says that you you can't use your agency or title as federal government employees to advocate for or against a somebody running for political office. And we know Trump's been running since the day he got into office because that's his moneymaker. I take a step further. I could use my name. I just want to keep it all out of it. And I want to keep a nice giant crowbar separation between what I do at night and on the weekends. And what I do during the day. What do you think your work, and your background give you in terms of understanding issues that other people might not have working in the government? And I think you're veterans that right, right? What does that perspective? Give you how understanding how absolutely slow the government roles. It's just so Celo and people right now they want answers now. And they, you know, they just don't understand why things take so long, and I hope that I can lend some explanation as to why they do and that it's actually that way for a purpose. When the report came out did you say to yourself? That's it for the podcast because I mean, obviously, the title of the podcast is Muller. She wrote and Miller has written. I'm not sure really because I I don't feel that I'd dictate where this show goes. I think the listeners dictate whether or not the show keeps happening, but you know, personally, we've got twenty offspring investigations from this. That are still open an ongoing we've got the stone trial that doesn't start till November. We've got bijon key on July. We'll keep covering it. If people keep needing us. To cover it. Yeah. I think we know that there's a lot to be covered and could go on for a very long time. But my fear, I guess was that people would take bars four-page summary and think that that means shops closing up, and that's all there's to be seen. But I don't think that's how our fans are. And I think we have a lot more to do. Everyone was like, oh, they're done. No further indictments. And then boom, Greg Craig it's dieted yet. Mr. first name since right? One indictment bridge. Name. Yeah. What you that's the real crime who first name. What do you think it is that you give listeners that maybe they can't find some other place? I think we remove the talking angry heads that a lot of people get tired of. But mostly the whole mission of this was to keep people interested in keep people engaged and to keep it simple. And to to take these traumatic and important events in spin them into humor, it it kind of helps us get through it. It's kind of like if you don't laugh, you'll cry and fans say that we were curatorial journalists and everything that we do we always provide context as well. So it's it's like very as a huge story, obviously and everything fits in a time line. And I think we do a good job of reminding everyone the the importance of each news bid that comes up and keep it rolling in a way that's easy to digest. And yet in a very recent episode of your podcast, you
