You mentioned. scroll ix more that i've heard other i know you do it. I don't understand it lorraine get i. Love electronic dance music at taps into my rage. Is that what it is. Is that what appeals about it. It's a lot of things. I mean i love the important. The expression melodic aspect I love the sounds because these are beats that they make themselves so they can sound like anything. It's like you can identify style of a certain person. For instance excision. His sounds sound power tools. So you know it's him and to off planet has a unique sound and flux pavilion has a unique sound and all these people The really good ones are just. They're so fabulous. I mean i don't have enough words for how much i love them. I boy get just you know. I'm sure you couldn't listen to one second of them so that i could. It's jazz that i have a problem with but you have a love of blues right. You have a love of jazz. You have no interest. Are you talking about like the The wave type of jazz or even that's better to the. Yeah it's like dum. Dum dum dum. We're never gonna sing anything and we're never gonna give you a you know that kinda shit drives me talking. Crazy just bores the crap out of me. All right to reach those exceptions Swiss movement is a great album but yeah for the most part. I just i hate jazz. Who cares what i think so. We do care if we got okay. Well i'll take it to my grave about you and i do. I have to say that My friend i went to see etta james at in manhattan beach. I write about this in the book and she was. This was before her resurgence and she was. It was a little club. And you could see out the front door of it when you were on stage and people would pass by. Poke their heads in an etta. James had wants to the audience or the people poking their heads in There's no jasmine here. If you're looking for jazz no jazz. I hate jazz. I was like my queen queen. Perfect got updike guys. I'm okay. I've got acid reflux which i believe is one of the edm x. That does yes. What zanex zantac attack. That's it. I don't i will enjoy some zantac later. The hey you mentioned the the robert deniro auditioned. I don't i. Don't wanna be the guy that leaves a phone off the hook. Let's can you share that auditioning for king accommodate comfortable sharing that story sure There's a context to that which is that before. Snl when i was nineteen. My boyfriend lived close to this diner called dukes which was below the tropicana motel on santa monica boulevard An infamous motel where people have died and It was family style seating and it was like the hollywood canteen you would see all these people that eventually became famous. And that's another thing about my book is that i met all these people before they were famous. And then even afterwards. I knew phil hartmann before he went to snl jon lovitz before they went to snl You know paul reubens. The other day reminded me that we've known each other for fifty years so but So one of the people. I met at this diner. Was martin scorsese. And he showed us a screening of his movie and it wasn't complete yet it didn't have the music the soundtrack yet And it was mean streets so you know that relationship was such that it was important to me to do a good job when i auditioned for king of comedy years later and it was the kind of thing where i felt obligated. If they're interested in me they think i might be able to do it. Well maybe i can knowing full well. I couldn't you know it was the kind of acting. I had never done in my life which was intense and and revelatory. I mean absolutely naked. Not not Figuratively but Actually sandra bernhardt was in iran underwear. I couldn't even done that. No but i don't think so. But i was told i'd be reading with jerry lewis but instead it was robert deniro and It was just so mortifying and at one point. He's looking at me. Like i smell like a chinese restaurant dumpster and again you know in the corner of the room watching the audition knowing how badly i sucked Another one of those mind reading moments. But i had to sit on his lap. Cry stroke his hair lovingly while. He's hating me. Jesus and i did not have the chops or the balls to do that. Convincingly and talk about distracting we. We have Bob hope testicles. We have knowing that you're not really supposed to be reading for this. You have no business no business reading for it. It's distracting but don't because i share that with my wife danielle and she's like but the alternate would have been jerry lewis who can be an asshole or would you think that would have been harder. Yeah robert deniro was just doing his job. No i mean he was so nice. Everybody was so nice. It's just that. I was the one i was the critic watching myself. And you know condemning myself You know you hear this a million times and we say this to our children no one would be as mean to you as you already yourself right and by the way to that point you get the role in perfect would your great in and you never give yourself that even in the book the hey it would be weird to go and i finally was great and i with you. You were great that you are the perfect best friend. You were wonderful. Thank you all right. Well let's not argue the point. Just accept my my review..

"La and And then the rest of the book. And by the way as i said before a lot of great stories after the snl years. Dating everybody from peter cook to phil hartmann to the great war and see on you and i talked about on the phone who is an incredibly funny guy. Response from devaux. You would never think that warren is funny. But he was funny. You know Mark mothers bah is incredibly funny. Obviously peter and phil but also talk a little bit about just. I know it's hard to sum it up in in little bite sized trump's but you were also dealing with a lot of depression and self doubt as a performer. Yeah well you know. I always felt that. I had a really clear idea of what my limitations were. And that's not a wasn't a good thing to look at and i It's like people kept saying things to me like you can do it. And i knew i couldn't you know and couldn't understand. What was the schism. Why do people think. I could do this kind of acting. When i knew that. I couldn't and so i kept expecting myself to be able to do. And that was really rough is i was constantly Faced with my limitations so that coupled with you know lifelong experience of depression. I mean when i was four years old i well my twin brother and i Didn't really get to see much of our mother until we were four years old because my mom was pregnant with another baby who died after it was born and so she was depressed and then she got sick from the hospital and then she had to have a hysterectomy so understandably. This poor woman was depressed and we really didn't get to see much of her. But i remember telling my dad all the time that i was homesick. Because that's the only thing. I knew about what that feeling was inside me. Any would laugh and say what your home. But that was the loneliness that i was feeling. And i just didn't know the name for it so It's been a journey. I mean my god i. I'm so grateful for the life that i have today. What we talk on the show and gilbert. You've mentioned this yourself. You know how this. There's that belief when you start out that show business is gonna cure all your personal ills. Yeah i when. When i went in when i first started thinking i wanna be in show business. I thought i once you're in show business. You.

And i still was struggling not to laugh. He was great. My sister knew him to my sister. Knew a lot of these comics. Tracia when i would meet the might say i'm tracy newman's little sister and it was. It was a wonderful thing. I i love things like ex-police. Yes please danny stuff. They really took chances and they did. Especially after update especially at the the twelve thirty part of the show where fewer people were watching and they just do the weirdest stuff. There was that weird kitchen sink drama. That belushi did with sissy space x one. I mean it's it's it's great. But also i love that when ron nessen hosted and you guys all knew that president ford would be watching. Everybody went out of their way to be on their worst behavior. The content we were. We were certainly not. You know misbehave around him but the content and don't ask me to remember what it was. I think it's in the bottom of the douche. Was in that building burps at the end. So great flankers yes. We've got down that show mangled baby ducks ten thousand nuns and orphans. Really really good stuff. Chevy was the first person to tell you the aristocrats joke gilbert knowing this yes and he acted it out. He pantomime did it and he told the there's as you know there's two versions the scatalogical one and the incest one. He did the incest. One and I i mean. I cannot tell you how hard i laughed and then years later after the show i was in bed at my boyfriend's house i had broken my ribs. And how chevy tracked me down but you know the opening line to the joke is guy goes to a booking agent so the phone rings. No hello this is chevy nothing. It's just guy goes to a booking agent now you know. My ribs are broken. I don't know if you've ever reading painful little own laughing And i thought that was so sweet. Such a loving thing for him to do. And i'm not being facetious. I'm looking at some of these sketches to and gilbert. And i just recently talked about the claudine lingerie ski invitational on the podcast on otani. You must must've been. I don't know but i know that that was the first time there was any kind of threat of a lawsuit and yeah because she was acquitted as as as memory serves. Yeah it was like a running thing whenever you sore someone going Skill go into the air and is famous white house. Grab you'd hear gunshot and they go. Oh yoon long. Jair accident shot another one..

Thomas thomas cesar romero would never dress as a priest laurent. We'll get back to snl. But i like the story and the memoir goes all the way from your childhood growing up in. What would you move six times. Seven times six in los angeles as a kid. It's it's there's fascinating. La history of the tell. Tell the fred astaire story because there's a sweetness to it in a sadness to it it also speaks to why we do. This podcast is so that. So that great veteran performers are never forgot. Well i i should say that you know beverly hills and los angeles. It's just like any other industry town even if it were like detroit Except this one. If it were christmas you would see carey grant shopping at caroline. You know company or you know There was a fencing school on santa monica boulevard with a big picture window. And i remember seeing. Tony curtis shirtless fencing school. But one day my my friends and our walking on rodeo drive. I saw Fred astaire and i mean he was he he looked ancient. His skin had that kind of pepper. A papery kind of texture to it and He seemed very feeble. And i kind of tapped him on the shoulder which surprised him. I think unpleasantly. And i said oh my god it's you he says yes my dear and your wonderful news thank you. It's nice to be remembered. All and i remember thinking at the time. How could he thinks that we would know that anybody would not remember him. And then that movie ghost story. Which i'm sure you've seen with douglas fairbanks to melvyn. Douglas trot housemaids. "I I saw marcel marceau at royce hall. Which is at ucla. And i became enthralled with this form of comedy with no words. So i went backstage after show and i asked him if there was someone in. La acas study with and he gave me the name of richmond. Shepard so. I started studying with him when i was fifteen or sixteen and at the same time. Return was also teaching improv. So that was when i started studying. The violence bolan games as well So many people have come on the show and talked about what we had. Paul sand of course well. She's the the grandmother of. Yeah she's really the genesis of the form. Yeah and i go. what was it like. How did you get the audition for saturday. night live. And what were you going through when you were doing it. Well first of all. Everybody hates me. When i say this i didn't know i was auditioning Lauren was producing lily. Tomlin special so he and lily came to see the groundlings. And this was in the very beginning when we adjust named our company and They're looking for people for her special and they hired me and then. Lauren came back a second time when i was doing new material and new characters and he asked me to meet him at the chateau mar montauk about a show that he was going to be doing. And you know. I trusted him. I liked his taste. I knew that he was doing stuff that you know. I never expected to see on tv. So it was thrilling. Exciting visually was monty python. Meets mates sixty minutes. Yeah cross between monty python at sixty minutes. Yes and you kind of blocked and pretended you knew what monty python was right. And i got you know kind of teased a lot for not knowing them. They weren't on in l. a. In one thousand nine hundred seventy five. I mean they just started in seventy five already. Left for new york. Said never seen them like you describe in the book you say the people most people think of him as this mogul and you think of this. This canadian comedy writer wearing reindeer sweaters. Yeah and really cute. Really good-looking.

"You have no idea lorraine is sitting in a closet for proper audio for best audio. And we have to put our faith in her because she's a professional voice actor. Yes and I've had to learn all sorts of methods of recording compressing a file and delivering it on sales platforms. Isn't that a good story. yes you're of. Our guests can't do that. Were greatly relieved that you can actually record on your own and deliver on your hotel. Gilbert the deniro story before we go away from it because it's in the memoir and it's very funny to kind of backtrack when i was around. Nineteen my boyfriend was an artist and he lived very close to the tropicana motel which was really infamous. It was the scene of many heroin overdoses and The setting for andy warhol's movie trash and right below. It was duke's shop so was known as dukes at the tropicana and It was really like the hollywood canteen we would. it was Family style seating. So you could be sitting across from big pop or next to tom. Waits and one of the friends that we made At these wreck vists was martin scorsese and he was just like doing the finishing touches on means streets. He invited us all to see a rough cut but he hadn't put the music on it yet. So spool forward. Two years later this was why it was so important to me that I do a good job. When i auditioned for king of comedy and i was told i'd be auditioning with jerry lewis but in fact jedi wasn't there it was a robert deniro and you know i was so unprepared in the sense that i i worked on it but i knew that i wasn't the kind of actress that was uninhibited enough to be seen with their clothes. Off to be psychotic to be you know as i did in the audition sitting on deniro's lapsed stroking his face and hair and singing to him. While he's hating me. I just i didn't have the balls or the chops for that. Which you know gilbert. It's it's that's so distracting during an audition. Not the part that sandra bernhardt would obviously go on to get the mantras. Great in yes. She was great. Will you hate auditioning gilbert hates auditioning i. I got better at shinning over the years in the beginning it was a complete nightmare. And then after while you realize all right my chance of getting this is one in a trillion I might as well try to have fun with it. That's a great attitude. I must say. I just have like a an out of body experience and after all these years of auditioning. I'm still in the corner of the room on the ceiling watching myself and I just. I can't focus because of the fear so.

"This. God damn it. I mean first of all i. I knew the director so my way of ingratiating myself with him was to kind of bond with our mutual dislike of some one. This is bad mouthing someone in front of the casting director. Yeah it was just obnoxious and then my reading just was terrible. Because i'm not good at auditions so it was a wonderful combo of me being an obnoxious asshole and allows you perform. I keep reading reviews of various. Snl oral history books and they talk about. It seems that everyone maybe just two different books. That i read a few reviews of these two different bucks and in the early days to here we will tell it. Chevy chase was just a very hard to work with. Was that your experience of him. No but i. I can't say how it was for the guys. It might have been a different thing entirely but chevy was always lovely to the girls. She was always nice. He wasn't Abusive in any way. No i mean it was a really. The cast was wonderful. I i realized this in in doing press for this book is Nobody ganged up on anybody. And there were never clicks which is remarkable when you think about it because it's it's just like a group of people. It's like a lifeboat that you're all you know contributing to this effort to survive. You know and also coming from an improv background. It's all about supporting the other actor right so that we're really fortunate that way that we all were at least polite to one another. That is wonderful. What was your relationship with guild like. I know that you have said that you were never as close with her after as you were during your time at. Snl yeah Gilder was wonderful. She's a wonderful person and so loving to me and so supportive and affectionate you know Except when she had a boyfriend nobody saw her.

"Did you invent our idea valley girl. Oh my god you're putting the humble bragging and you know it's like that's a claim to fame. But i guess i did the first one. Yes because you did not and you're welcome. Thank you thank you. You did that in your audition right because that's on youtube your and snl screen test. Yes yeah it's the monologue from the groundlings that was eventually used in the godfather group. Therapy sketch on us and l. But that was You know a piece that i did in the groundlings right and you talked a little bit in the book about the difference between the valley girl as it was understood. Then that you did versus the one like the thing they're doing in the californians californians. Yeah it's a different thing entirely. And i remember noticing this sort of how that was morphing. Can you explain that a little bit. Like what is the difference. Oh my god. I let me think about that. Well first of all. I was listening to. Npr one day and they were talking about dialects in the country. And the fact that you know like the boston pronunciation of cause and things like that or an affect. It was not a corruption of an existing accent from point of origin for immigrants but in the case of the value dialect. They were talking about how it's kind of now become all over the country than people are talking like that and it's just kind of a a a slackness of the jaw people not crossing their t's verbally So it's almost like a corruption of regional accents. I mean people who are from really regional places still have wonderful fascinating accents but overall in urban areas people have gotten really so much to sound that way to some degree. I mean you know the interrogative lilt at the end of sentences. Like i thought i'd do this. And then he said this you know That i think is definitely you know the infection that started with the valley speak right. I think not the first time. I was like wait. This used to be different. The is it called all girls. Or the like chris farley david spade was adam sandler win. They're in a mall and they're like et my gut. Oh well that is different than than how you did it yeah. I broke down the dialect in the book.

"Well other than the subjects. I was interested in I had a lot of trouble I think probably had learning disabilities and because there was no name for that. I just felt this incredible confusion and anger and fear at the fact that everybody else seems to know. What's going on. And i don't you know i didn't necessarily think i was stupid so i i just felt kind of persecuted in a way that somehow they got there they were sent down from the lord with an instruction that i never got so i just felt like you know it would have been more that and i really wanted to do. Well i mean. I wanted to do. I wanted to do so. It was kind of that too so you wrote to schools in london. Was this that just strikes me as so as So enterprising for a high schooler to do that. Did you have an adult helping you. Yes i had a therapist who joshua susannah hoff's dad. Oh wow angles fan. Yeah and he gave me really practical advice he said. What do you want to do and i i. I don't know i mean. I never really knew what the name was for what i did because i wrote a lot of my stuff but i was also in high school productions so i guess that means an actor you know so and he said would you know of any acting schools and i said i only know the ones in england so said right to the british consulate and get pamphlets for them. So that's what i did. It was because of him really. So you already in therapy as a teen. Oh god all through. Yeah i was in therapy a lot. what was it did this. She lock her door. Who had put you in therapy. My parents why. I literally. Because i- i locked my door also. Yeah and they knew. I was doing drugs to and when did you start doing drugs when i was thirteen. What was that like Well it was You know those scenes in movies where rays of light filter through clouds onto the horizon. Yes it felt like that. You know all this all these bad feelings that i had all the time were immediately washed away. I had.

"Schizophrenic because you're either like a cultural icon to someone or people don't recognize you at all. They recognized the famous friend. That you're with and say would you take a picture with us. It's like sure. God kill me you know. Were you able to enjoy the height of your fame. That's mixed i. There would be a mixed answer. Sometimes it was great and we'd find ourselves in situations you know. I think when there was an iot strike we shot one episode in brooklyn and the band was the musical guest and so killed. And i were up in the bleachers watching their sound check and just looking at each other like we are so lucky. This is unbelievable and the exposure to the bands and the hosts and the parties. We got to go to the ones we were invited to You know there are so many things that are fun and but also kind of infanta leising for actors where their path is smoothed out for them ahead of them so that they don't have to deal with stuff first class backstage. Pass all this kind of stuff. And that's why. I think a lot of people have a hard time when that goes away. I having grown up in los angeles and seeing you know actors that had been well known and been on shows and then not being on them. Anymore i saw with that was like in. I knew that that was something that an actor could expect that. So interesting to describe it as infanta. Leising hadn't thought of it that way but yeah i see but i mean it is codling in a way. Oh yeah at the same time. It sounds nice to only fly first class to have every have hotel rooms and have people imbue you with all these qualities that you don't even have right wonderful qualities that you wish you had because there's a fantasy that you know i always i. I don't know some guy asked me if you can have dinner with three people who would it be and i. I couldn't name anybody. Except like barack obama. Because it's these people are strangers. Whoever i might admire you know. Scroll ix somebody..

"Therapy. How my parents you know. My dad was the typical nineteen fifties. Dad he worked all day but also for the first year For four years of me and my twin brothers lives. My mother was sick so we really had very little contact with her. Wasn't her fault but by the time she was able to interact with us she had already had two other kids by the time she was nineteen and then she had this set of twins when she was thirty and she was just done was not interested and god bless her. You know there are moments where understand that. Of course you know being apparent. I became the opposite and became a helicopter parent lately up. My kids butts. Yes so i was alone a lot and also. I'm learning in therapy. Alison You know that kind of neglect can constitute a trauma. It really sets in a child's sense of self worth et cetera et cetera. But overall you know it was really fortunate upbringing. In the sense that i i had closed. I had food and shelter. Yeah i mean those are the the and and we should be thankful for that. But still i feel like kids need so much more. I'll i'll say yes and you said she was sick with so Listening to the to the beginning of the of the book. I my heart went out so much to you and it also went out so much to your mom having a child who lived seventeen days and then seventeen our seventy hours. Oh my god. Oh my god it's and then as you point out back in those days like they didn't really understand grief counseling or postpartum. And so then she got a hysterectomy. Was that supposed to help her postpartum that was to treat him aggression. I mean come on. So i not just an iron maiden of middle so she got hepatitis from the hospital. It was just it was really hard for. Yeah yeah so..
