"From workhouse connect and AJ benza. Fame. He liked to be walked on a leash and played really dirty kinky sex camps. The guy put the cock in the peacock network, okay? Bitch. Hey everybody, AJ Benji here with fame as a bitch. This is your free podcast for Wednesday, march 8th, 2023. I'm not sure if I mentioned this on the free show or the Patreon, but yesterday was 38 years, my father has passed. And I can't really buy. It's just hard to even believe that. 38 years. And I'm 60. So we're talking, well, 23, 23 years old and changed when he died. Didn't know what I really wanted to do except be on TV, you know, write, maybe act, at the time I was involved with gambling operation with John Gotti's crew out in Queens and I was running what they called half sheets back in the day. My cousin, one of the black sheep cousins in my family, Albert was working for John. And we're related. Me and Albert distantly, but we had the same uncle great uncle, I should say. The same great uncle who was a killer from Meyer lansky, in the name of happy mayon, and Albert knew I needed some money. I just got married and owned a house and he's like, look, you know, you can come work for me. I was done with college, but I didn't want to go to some little school, a little paper in Alabama or Ohio, or Delaware, and make $21,000 a year. I couldn't do that. Run of the college I was working in the sports tout business and making shit. I missed the first two years. It must have made 75, $80,000 cash. It's a lot of money for a 22, 21 year old kid. My father knew I was making it. That got me into the business with John Gotti's people about bringing them customers who wanted a gamble. And as a result, every week, well, the first week, the first week they were brought in to gamble with John's organization. John's outfit, I would get half of what they lost. That was the rule. That's called half sheet. So the more people you bring in, the more money you can make. And I used a lot of people that I was talking to when I worked for the sports town agencies, and I made some good money. And then I would add little things on top of that by saying to the gamblers, look, you know, people you're gambling with are not, you know, your local neighborhood bookie this series people. So you got to send $5000 up front as security money in case you ditch us. And you'd be surprised how many people did this. And I didn't tell the gaudy people I was doing that. I just wanted some extra change for me. Well, this show is started three minutes in and we're so deep into this gangster past kind of shit, but I was thinking about it. Like if my dad while he was alive back then and as this was happening, he was alive and I think he was most concerned over the fact that I was going to make money, you know, that there's nothing to worry about.

"I see on your site, you've got three different or two different models, one is like 16 gigs, almost 32 gigs. And in that is some hardware variants. So do you see, is it possible to consistently have a decentralized open chain where people can continue to run? Because that's 64 gigs is going to turn to a 128. Two 56. Do you see it leveling off the needs, the hardware needs? Landscape and you do? Either either one, you can take that one. Okay. I think mainly is going back. I mean, I agree on the idea that money is the reason for running these things. I also believe that makes sense because at the end, the people that put some value to their time. And if you need to spend one week understanding how to run an out and you are not going to get nothing more than happiness to be able to do it, maybe it's not enough to have a decentralized network. And related to the hardware consumption yeah, I think in the gate of the quite different because we expect people to run several things and every day is building a new blockchain. So the only way to be able for running several is to try to have a bigger specs. But we also have an a.m. bastion of dominant and if you only want to run Bitcoin and it should be more than enough with an 8 a.m. I think at the end or my feeling is that in the future with the staff, we are going to be able to generate proof of the state of blockchains and be able to have a still its client and with that I hope that in the future the resources to run regular note that is going to be able to validate fractions and be part of the network is going to be less. Maybe we are going to have another role in network that is these prover that generated the proof, but that's another thing. It's like we are going to split the work of the network in different roles and we are going to have the proverbs that are going to be going to make big growth, but the regular notes and the notes that usually people consumes by the attractions and to be aware of the status of the network are going to be less expensive. So I get that that is the direction that we are going because if we want to achieve this massive discussion per second that a lot of people want and if we want to go mass adoption in contraction and we need to have this new technology. So otherwise it's not a scalable. The growing of the hard drive and the run is going to be possible to sustain. And the only one is to introduce this new technologies that allow us to decrease the hardware requirements. And obviously at the moment that we are able to decrease the hardware equipment, I guess that in the future more people can run more things and sustain more network at the same time. Yeah, adding on to that, which I agree with everything. There are a lot of efforts towards making these accessible within the communities and blockchains that value this centralization, not in the ones that don't value this improvisation, of course. But there's been talks about a regenesis taking a snapshot of the chain and doing a new genesis from that snapshot. There's been talks on. Adding a new opcodes for temporary temporary storage that there's new opcodes being talked about in the Ethereum ecosystem that would allow you to store data on chain temporarily just enough time for what a roll up of any kind would like to would like to or would need it to be there. And then just delete it. So all of these measures are meant to reduce the hardware, the hardware needs of. Chain or a validators stateless clients as a dimension is another one. So there's there are thoughts. This is something that is being talked about. And I think maybe we will not get back to a sort of like really, really lightweight. I wish maybe like maybe not, maybe not. Maybe we will go back to something that users have it in a Raspberry Pi. My first Dogecoin, I had to wait for 5 minutes. I had it in my laptop, and I had to wait for 5 minutes to sync again before I wanted to make a transaction, but it was mine. And it took tops 5 minutes to load whenever I wanted to make a transaction. So hopefully we can get back to that. I want to ask another question to everybody. Well, not everybody. This is just to do. And lansky is that, you know, in a world where this tech is proliferated. Everybody loves it. In a world, there's going to be a piece of hardware to everybody's house or business. Like for example, I'm looking down right now. It's a fiber modem. I don't know what's in that thing. But it's allowing us to have this awesome conversation right here.

"Whenever my father would tell me stories of his days as an undercover narcotics cop for the US Treasury, he'd get to talking about chasing mobsters like Joe Gallo, Joe profaci Joe Colombo, a lot of Joe's back then. I was only a kid when he bought me a magazine with a lot of gangsters in it and a bunch of black and white pictures of a lot of guys who got rubbed out. It was called mafia at war. And he'd tell me who he knew and who he chased and which ones used to come to my grandmother's house in Brooklyn and drink her wine and eat her pasta. And eventually he pointed to one hard nosed mean looking gangster in the fedora and an overcoat who was named Harry happy mayon, who was a hitman for Meyer lansky, and a member of murder incorporated. And my father would say, this is a great uncle on your mother's side. I'd say, why'd they call him happy? Because he was a mean son of a bitch. I love that magazine. I used to memorize those guys like kids in my class would memorize them baseball cards. Some kids could tell you how many hits Hank Aaron had, I could tell you how many hits Sal maranzano survived.

To understand that these people who are gangsters and monsters in this and that large corporations wanting that they are people, they are people like we are. How they got to be these monsters and villains and whatnot takes a looking into who of us hasn't had monstrous thoughts, but didn't carry them out. We're allowed to have them. As long as we don't carry them out. So when eitan brought me lansky, I was taken by that journey that Maya had and his family when they came to America. And the fact that this little boy turned out to be this great organizer had this great mind to organize the way the way he did and give thousands of jobs to people and yet be against him. In the bad sense, I will just note to end our portion of this conversation on a funny note, I think. I think there are a lot of people out there who think Harvey Keitel must be Italian because he's in all these so here, finally, at 82, you get to play a Jewish gangster. Yeah. And we had a Christmas tree. Yeah. Well, thank you so much. Thank you for this portion and we are going to immediately turn this over to the students and our first question is going to come from Anthony post. Hi, mister keitel, thank you for being with us here this afternoon. I'm interested because you've played a lot of very interesting characters with strong moral centers yet a lot of them also have a very violent side of them. And how as an actor, you're able to balance a lot of these complex characters. And if there's a favorite of yours from your career. That's exactly why I'm an actor. And where you are starting to be what? I film studies major. Well, you can answer that question as well as I can. You have those thoughts you have. An imagination, you don't commit those things, but they're in you. That's the bridge to me from the boys.

"They were silenced at the table. I said, it isn't the first time. And the journalist looked at each other back in me and said, where when? I said, in acting class. Yeah. And that was the truth. Yeah. And you can see in the movie. Totally. I hope by the way, Jay campion is one of those people whose work is just I'm always fond of calling her a witch because my close relationship with, then I follow up by saying, but she's a good witch. The kind you'll find in a fairytale. And you guys did work together again on holy smoke a few years later. And just bridging again the gap between that and now, everyone from Spike Lee and clockers in 95, two Wes Anderson movies, moonrise kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel. Youth in 2015, you were excellent in. There is the check film, the painted bird, which I know, more people need to see, but it was excellent. I hope the most recent recent reunion with Scorsese, the Irish man in 2019, and aero and the whole crowd and you guys even brought along Pacino for the first time on that one. But this brings us to 2021 where you are playing Meyer lansky as we've all in this room seen today. But just for listeners, late in his life, dying of lung cancer, maybe looking to unburden himself of certain things, but not wanting them out there while they can still hurt him as he speaks with speaks with an author played by Sam Worthington. And I guess I just wonder if you can talk about, this is not the first feature from this filmmaker, eitan rockaway. But you can maybe talk about who he and his father are and how this connected with you wanting to play this role. Well, I'll try and go fast. You must be tied to city. First of all,.

"That's the beginning of you and Scorsese. It's kind of you have to feel like that's fate. Did you guys immediately hit it off? Yeah. And you want to hear how I met Marty? Please. I love the story. Please. Okay, so I was, I was still a court slogger probably had left courts, courts wanted to be free to study acting. So I used to follow the trades to see where I can get some experience in a non paying job of Broadway, you know, some dusty places or something. So Marty's Marty put an ad in the show business newspaper where all the actors go to find auditions. They go to. I didn't have an equity car or anything so I couldn't get in anywhere. So he had additions in NYU. First auditions, I don't know. Maybe 50 actors showed up for the parts. And I was surprised on the actors were out of work. You know, only to find out later on that very few actors do work. And so I went through, I think, three auditions and narrowed it down to like three people for that part. And so I go down to NYU that night. It's closed at night, but Marty had, you know, the keys to the kingdom, and for the final audition. Like three guys. So I get there and I see two other guys there and a couple of students that were Molly's assistants. School is empty. There is a bob on the hallway, like here or there. Go in guy guides me to a seat and I sit down. Just sit over there, you know, I sit down. And waiting for a guy comes up and says, you see that door down there down the hallway where the light is emanating. I said, yeah, he said, go in that room and wait there. Molly's not around anywhere. I go in the room and there's a guy sitting in a chair behind a desk. Again, like you are there. And I walk in. He said, sit the fuck down. I said, excuse me, but who are you? He said, sit the fuck down. I.

"I go over there and I go into come back. I said, okay, he said, how many were there? I said, 33. He said, did you count every one of them? I said, no. He said, well, go back. And count every single one of them. Because acting is doing things truthfully with a purpose. And that's still sticks in my head every time I work. Well, and you've over the course of those years in particular, those early years, as you were getting into acting, worked with people who today, people study the people who you studied from. I mean, we're talking about Stella Adler Lee Strasberg, Lee Strasberg, by the way, played a version of Meyer lansky in The Godfather part two. He was excellent. He was excellent. But these folks, particularly at the actor studio, which you've been associated with ever since, they are spoken of in the glowing terms. They change the way people's actors looked at their profession. And I wonder if you can explain, particularly the method is often comes up as something they taught. But just what for you, if you could, you know, pretend you're talking to people who have no idea what the actor studio or the method is about, even though I think we have a little bit. What was the great value of your time with the Stella adlers and Lee straussberg and people at the Actors Studio? I knew a question like this will come up. And it's almost the most difficult thing to answer. And I probably can't answer it. And that satisfy you completely. First of all, there was people like Harold clemen and Elia Kazan and other greats that were teachers there who formed the group theater, they were the ones that changed the way theater was done in America. The group theater. People like boleslavsky from Russia taught there and they still adlers and Lee Strasberg's that study with stanislavski and Russia. So it was a very healthy intelligent group of people that began to group theater which evolved into the active studio, still Adler went her own way. She and her brother Luther Adler was a great actor. And these were just super talents who had learned the method that stanislavski and people like him at buck time off and all those Russian names that came pronounced. Taught in Russia. And they were just powerful figures..

"And then I became a quotes stenographer. Like Scott was saying, I didn't have to speak. But my study wasn't very bad then. I just hadn't had that education. That I longed for by that time, by the way, I had gone on the base to a college that came to the Marine Corps base in North Carolina. I had traveled around a bit before that. I was in Lebanon when marines and parachutes went in 1958. But there was no war they were free to me. There was a college on the east coast that offered courses on the base. And I took a psychology course there and I was the only one from the infantry in North Carolina where the second record division stationed. And in this class, they were all young marines from base intelligence, you know, the base, hierarchy, this and that. I was the only infantrymen in the class. Which meant sometimes when there was a class with once or twice a week in psychology. And I would come from the field. So I came in there with the rifle and ammunition and my belt, they know. And everyone else was dressed in the neat with a tie and everything. So that's where I had my first introduction to what school might be like. Was in that class. And so then when I cut to the chase, and I was quite sonographer in New York City. I was working with this very handsome, lovely Greek guy for the city of New York. It was like out of a Kafka novel, you know? Taking cases for people tripped off the sidewalk, fell into cellar, you know? And pursuing the city. And he said to me one day, Harvey, you want to go and see about acting lessons. I never thought about it. I said, okay. I mean, I was a quartz and I wasn't it's a good healthy job for people. But it wasn't for me after three years in marines and all that. But no education. I couldn't go very far. It was no place to go. So I began to miss that education. I gave up all those years ago a great deal. And most of the girls were smart, wanted.

"Would you please join me in welcoming to Chapman university the great Harvey Keitel. Can I say something before we get started? Whatever you'd like. Okay. Before I got thrown out of high school, I left with one word one line of wisdom that I never forgot. For my English teacher, and I got thrown out kind of early, by the way. Who said the only stupid question is the one not asked. Now we can start. Thank you. So on this podcast, we always begin. Right at the beginning, if you would not mind sharing with our class, where were you born and raised and what did your folks do for a living? I was born and raised in Brooklyn. My folks were immigrants from Romania and Poland. So I'm the child of immigrants. And my father worked at a sewing machine in factory, all of his life. And my mother worked in lunch and here and there. And you were a presence in those diners as well, right? I made more at that time we called them Morton's milkshakes. You can imagine. And that creams. Cherry cokes. Hamburgers. It's a good skills. So my understanding though is that when you were not in the diner or wherever else that your parents might have been, you were running with a crowd that maybe got a little bit, I got into a little bit of trouble now and then. And then yet as you kind of referenced, you did not finish high school, the traditional way, you went off at 17 to the marines. How do we reconcile the kid who's running around getting in trouble with choosing to go into the marines? Well, first of all, the idea.

"Jen psaki only have is among unvaccinated. There is a clear message that is coming through this is becoming. A pandemic of the unvaccinated doctor lansky sat on an earlier briefing. Today this is really becoming a pandemic of the unvaccinated. It's very clever. I hope it affects somebody. It's totally agra new. Audrey again we urge you to call back. Lines are full but we hope you get through. We'd love to continue the commerce point out that there's been some clever mixing of numbers Where there are people nursing homes who were quite elderly in quite ill Who got the vaccine and then died a few weeks later. It wasn't necessarily because of the vaccine it was because they were in dire health straits to begin with. But there's been some Some clever accounting. I guess to make the argument and the other direction david car. Thank you for calling. Hello dave hey good morning guys longtime many time. This is a very touchy situation for me. A buddy and i grew up in california and buddy and i were going to the gym and the next day we were supposed to go. 'cause i said hey i'm not feeling so good and he says yeah. I know we have chicken pox so we both got chicken pox from the gym people sweating on the on the equipment. Now that i'm over fifty. I'm getting shingles pretty much every other year. And i know there's a vaccination for it and i'm gonna get down As my doctor has told me but what the piggyback on it what really bugs me is. I have some friends I was in the restaurant. Business the chef for for many years and I've got friends that are servers. That are you know. Trump lovers dump the vaccine. Not you know same thing that the guy said earlier. You know my body choice. I'm not going to do it that it up. But they're going to work in restaurants and busy restaurants not wearing masks and it just blows my mind it absolutely just shakes my soul to the core. I just can't believe that people as you said earlier. They're just that stupid. And i don't get it. I really don't understand how selfish people are that. They don't care that they could be killing. People even know it. You dave wipe the one amendment. If i can make years obviously we only know a limited number of chefs and restaurateurs particularly. Those people have been kind enough to come on our show while not all the mer mandating vaccines for customers. I know very few who were not mandating vaccines and even after vaccines in many cases masking for servers and cooks and others who work in restaurants. I'm not denying that. What you said is true in some limited cases but i think most restaurant tours are acting pretty responsibly. Dave thank you for your call. We really appreciate it. Listen to this..

"You'll find a link to that book in the show notes. Thanks for being here. Sarah appreciate you coming on. Thank you so much you know when you fly the flight attendants do that little demonstration that includes what to do if the oxygen masks come down in an emergency. We'll have you ever wondered where on the plane they keep all that oxygen me. Don't there are no big tanks of oxygen. That would be dangerous would weigh a lot and take up a lot of room instead. What really happens is there is a chemical reaction that creates oxygen. The chemicals are barium peroxide sodium chlorate and potassium chlorate. And you know that part in the demonstration when the flight attendant says you need to pull down on the mask to release the flow of oxygen. Well what really happens. Is that tug on. The mask. triggers a firing pin that initiates that chemical reaction the byproduct of that reaction is oxygen. There's enough for about twenty minutes. Which is enough time for the pilot to bring the plane lower so you can breathe again and that is something you should know. "I'm Joan Joan and I'm John Aaron. Teddy Gilman is our producer just ahead. President Biden is expected to detail his National Covad strategy today. Meantime, the new Biden administration renews the U S commitment to the World Health Organization. Democrats take control of the U. S. Senate on Capitol Hill. I'm Mitchell Miller. Good morning. It's 9 31. With the coronavirus death toll surpassing the 400,000 mark this week in the U. S. President Biden is wasting no time dedicating his first full day in office to tackling the pandemic more from CBS correspondent Deborah Alpher own president. Biden is scheduled to unveil a national Covitz strategy today and signed 10 executive order. Aimed directly at fighting the coronavirus. They'll be added to the mask mandate on federal property he set in motion right after his swearing in mandating masking warm social justice, and he kept on federal property and interstate commerce. Etcetera. It's as part of the 10 executive orders on tap. For today, Those mass requirements will be extended to planes, trains and other forms of public transportation. Other goals in the Biden plan, reopening most schools during his 1st 100 days as well as focusing on hell. Disparities in minority communities. The Biden team is hoping to distribute 100 million vaccine doses in the 1st 100 days on NBC's Today show this morning, New CDC director Rochelle Walensky explained how they plan to do it right now. I think we still have vaccine on the shelves that we need to get into people. So we're deploying, you know places that we can get them into people. We are. We are looking at community vaccination centers and stadiums in gymnasiums. We're looking at mobile units to really get to every core. None of this country, federally qualified health care centers and pharmacies. So we're looking at a rollout plan that will will be diverse so that we can get to all people, though the Trump administration said the vaccine would be in widespread distribution by late February. Well, Lansky says she thinks that's unlikely. Former President Trump announced last summer the U. S was pulling out of the World Health Organization. But now the Biden administration is reversing that I am honored. To announce that the United States will remain a member of the World Health Organization that is Dr Anthony Fauci, president Biden's top medical advisor on covert 19. President Trump has sharply criticized the organization for its response to the pandemic. Fauci says the U. S will join the U.
