Kiffin plans to return; No. 20 Ole Miss falls to Bulldogs
"Mississippi state came from behind to win the 8 ball at 20th ranked Mississippi 24 22. All miss was leading 16 7 late in the first half when the bulldogs Will Rogers through the first of his two touchdown passes with 8 seconds left to cut the rebels lead to 1614. Roger's second TD past gave state a 24 16 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Is everything, you know, like you said, third shot, you know? Kind of got tired of losing these guys. Obviously they're really, really good football team. The bulldogs needed to stymie an old miss two point conversion tribe with just over a minute remaining to seal the win. The loss was the third straight for the rebels who coached lane kiffin as speculated to be heading to auburn. I'm Tom Mary.

"What a conversation with lane kiffin. That was truly memorable. And now we're going to take some phone calls at 855-242-7285. We start in jaw with John and Louisville. Hey John. Awkward. That's the word I would use. With your therapy session. Awkward it would be a very good word to use, yes. I mean, you treat you. He was like Taylor schlitz talking about one of her exes. That's exactly right. I mean, we've had that conversation in remotely once where it's never been a therapy session quite like that, some 9 years later. And then you said, I think we're getting somewhere. What do you think? Whatever. I got to get back to work. Well, you know what? I've said that you've heard me say this before, John. Lane kit for the day before a game is never going to be a solid gold interview. Because he's got a lot on his mind, but we pre game mode and it was pretty funny. Yeah. Hey, on your call with my Mike Griffith actually, he was pretty bland and boring. And I think, you know, it's a good analyst, everything's coming along. Nothing unusual. And then he had to end it with we got to get Jeremy Pruitt employed again in that he'll probably be working for Alabama and I'm thinking, did he not read the 18 level one violations? I mean, when you look for NCC and CA level one violations in Google it up, you'll see Jeremy with his wife in a bag of cash. I mean, come on. Yeah, but let me explain this what you already know, John. This is. My Griffith carrying the water for his buddy. And. Oh, truly. You know, I don't know the relationship between those two, apparently they do a podcast together. So it seems like griffs is just trying to help out Jeremy promote his name. Say good things about him. Act like there was no, it was never a big deal that he got fired in the middle of the night in Knoxville. No, I think Pruitt's got pictures on him and by the way, and I love Greg mcelroy, AKA John McEnroe, but he even suggested as well. Yeah, and, you know, where's all this coming from? Obviously, it's coming from Nick Saban, who wants to hire Jeremy Pruitt and he's testing the waters to find out whether or not it will pass the mustard. And I don't think I know the answer to that question. Because I do know that the SEC does not mandate that they don't tell schools what to do, but they can offer guidance though. Well, Paul, I'll tell you what. I will jump in the east river if the NCAA doesn't give a show cause order to Jeremy Pruitt in 60 days. I think they have a 30 day extension for Tennessee to respond. And then they're going to be issuing out some pretty severe punishment, not necessarily the Tennessee, but definitely the Pruitt and the thing that the one thing they can do and I know Griff wants to mitigate the current environment of the NCAA. And it isn't what it used to be, but they can easily drop a show called on this guy's head. Oh, they will. Without a doubt. And he will not be able to coach or recruit for anywhere from two to 5 years or even longer. So it's a fake complete coming. And great interview, great opening with the coach. Thank you very much. Let's go to Josh. In Queens, Josh, go right ahead. Hey Josh, are you there? I guess with all the pollution and toxic toxicity in Queens and brandy hard to get to Josh right now. Let's try, let's try mad dog. In Macon, go right ahead. Hey, Paul happy Friday. Happy truth serum Friday. How you doing? I feel like I've been run over by a lane truck. I tell you what, that was gold. It was so awkward. My mom called me. It was like, did you see the kip interview? Well, I will say that, I mean, most interviews with him are a little awkward, but that's what makes them gold. Exactly. Y'all were both in this, and that was awesome. All right, Paul. So this is kind of a weird role reversal for me as a dog fan, but I feel like Saban's been treated unfairly for two walk off wins not to the full point. And I think if you gave him some truth serum right now, he might quote the late great Mark Twain and say the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated because here's what I think is going to happen. Alabama is going to run the table. LSU has to come down off the mountain of last week and go to a rivalry game in northwest Arkansas and I think they're going to blow it there. They're going to have two weeks to think about it. And then they're going to go and have to play the 12th man against in the grandest irony of all a Texas a and M team who could possibly send Alabama to Atlanta. I mean, nobody's talking about this, but I really, truly think it's going to happen. What do you take in that scenario? It could. And I think we'll start to find out tomorrow. I know a lot of my friends who were connected to Vegas, she upset all over the game and Fayetteville. What are they saying about the end of the year where the Texas a and M could possibly be planning to get bowl eligible or that could actually be their bowl in the end of their season? Yeah, I think if you're sitting there in Jimbo Fisher's shoes, that's the one thing. You want. Jimbo Fisher has had no good luck this year other than the fill go by Arkansas and he could get a lot of local Cred back with by upsetting LSU's plans. Hey, thank you very much for the call. Really do appreciate it. Let's check out Gavin, who was up next. Hello, Gavin. Hello, Paul. I decided to thank you for taking my call. I'll just start off with saying that all the veterans who started our country, my dad is a veteran. He's currently served right now. And my granddad, he fought in Vietnam and he's retired in. I've got a couple of questions for you, Paul. Do you think hooker could be a legitimate candidate for heisen? Well, of course. I mean, he was a favorite a week ago. He's not out of it yet. He just needs, he needs to he needs somebody a couple other people to come back to the field. I think, namely, CJ Stroud. I still think the Heisman is pretty open. And one bad week will not cost you unless it is in late November. He came close to the danger zone, but it's not there yet. He's still got some time to recover. All right, and I got two more questions. The college will play off. Do you think Tennessee could still make it? Tennessee can certainly make it, yes. I mean, there's really not that big of a hill to climb. Tennessee just needs, he needs a little bit of luck. It needs LA shoe in Alabama out of the way, which could happen. And it needs TCU to lose. And then maybe that comes down to a beauty contest between Tennessee and the PAC 12 champion and the Big Ten runner up. By no means is it far fetched that Tennessee can get in there. I mean, in fact, I think if TCU loses this weekend, which is a pretty good probability, Tennessee can be ranked forth next Tuesday night. And something else is another thing to try to say like scenario, but I know the fact that you're trying to get them into the playoffs they need to win out, which is probably a no doubter for them. Yeah, I mean, Gavin, thanks for the call, but as a Tennessee fan, I would lose any sleep over anything so far. You guys are still in very good shape. We'll take a short break. We have a long way to go here. We're just getting started here in the first hour. Todd blackwood, he will be part of one of the most important games of the weekend tomorrow in college football and we'll talk to him next.

"Wonderful weekend here as old miss knocked off Kentucky and we are back for the game of the year. Or so they hope here. Alabama in town taking on the rebels 24 and a half hours from now and our gridiron guests to start it all off. Yeah, Jordan Rodgers, who's now on the, I think the 11th straight week of being the gridiron guest. What a beautiful day. Where else would you want to be than in the grove lane kiffin will join us in a couple of minutes, Jordan? We just heard this Montage of Sabin and kiffin and Griffin and Saban and we haven't had a chance to really talk to you since last Saturday night. Just your impressions of what happened in Baton Rouge and what it could mean to this Alabama team tomorrow. Yeah, it's a little baffling. It's easy to watch the game live and see the mistakes and kind of go, man. I haven't seen a Nick Saban team like this be sloppy, pre snap penalty, sloppy on offense, and when I dove into the film, I was even more surprised at just how many times receivers, especially running routes that were too deep or not the right route when Bryce young was looking for them. So there's a lot of coaching. I think that needs to improve for this offense and really for the team in general to get back to where we expect them to be. I think they can do that. I think this is a game where Alabama decides to get back to some physicality, especially with old miss, not being great against the run the last couple of weeks. They've been banged up in certain spots, important spots on defense. So, but again, just it's baffling to see this Alabama team at times. And I get it two losses extremely close. It's not like they're getting blown out by any stretch of the imagination. One player or two goes a certain way, those games are different, but not the usual Alabama team we're used to seeing. Yeah, and you saw them a couple of weeks ago and it just doesn't seem like by the 11th week in the season. If things aren't going to get if things aren't getting better, they're probably not going to. No, I don't think so. But again, the margin of error is so small. And so you can have all those penalties and sloppiness and you catch a ball against Tennessee and they probably win that game. You know, jameer Gibbs catches an angle route. It's probably a 20 yard field goal or a touchdown. So again, it's just so close. This is going to be another game with old miss being so good on offense. If Jackson dart can not turn the football over, it's going to be another one of those games is going to go down to the wire and who makes that one mistake that's going to end up being the difference. From a pure technical schematic matchup, where are the advantages? As you mentioned, one a minute ago in terms of almost struggle to stop the run. How does it match up? Yeah, I think schematically or miss on defense because of some of the injuries and because of where they've had to move guys. They're not as big or physical in certain areas that maybe they'd like to be at times they need to get lighter, play with more linebackers, excuse me, more DBs on the field and less size up front. I think if they get into that, Alabama's Camille run the football. On the other side though, I really do continue to love the advantages that Charlie Weiss junior and lane kiffin are dialing up in the run game. I mean, this is still one of the most creative systems that there is. And per what we were just talking about, some of the coaching miscommunications on offense, if you have those on defense, all misses gonna make you pay because quinson judkins won the best in the entire country. I think at running back in Jackson dart has dangerous with his feet as he is with its arms. So it matches up really nicely, I think you can find advantages for both teams. Rarely, do you have a game, or sometimes you do this late in the year, but three 30 tomorrow, two 30 local time, by the beginning of this game. On this and Alabama are both going to have an idea what's going on or what did go on and Fayetteville. So in the event that Arkansas has won that game. It changes things here for both teams. I don't know if that really matters. I mean, they're both pretty fired up. But how could that affect suddenly the players are coming out and you hear a score Arkansas 31 elect two 30? Yeah, I think it would have more of an effect to all miss. I just think as much as the struggles with Alabama have been documented, coaching wise, being sloppy. It's just still a team that has been there before. I think old miss, if they see that start to realize that this is possibly in their hands, if they win this game or could be, you know, that's where it starts to get interesting. I will say, I spoke to Jackson dart earlier, we did a little piece that we're going to air tomorrow as you see nation. That kid doesn't get rattled. And I'm a West Coast guy, so I'm a little laid back. He's a Utah guy. He's got him a West Coast guy. Just, I don't get the feeling that anything phases him. So I don't think to him at least. It's a young team and there's a lot of guys around there that may look at the scoreboard, but to the most important piece, lane kiffin and Jackson dart. I don't think it's going to matter. I don't think this game or this environment is going to take the best of them or get them out of their element. I don't think seeing a score of LSU happen to lose that it would change their approach to their mentality for this game. Yeah, it's harder to believe in a game of this magnitude than anything is going to face. Well, anyway, it's always great to have you on. We will hear from you tomorrow morning, obviously. With some breakdowns. Thanks Jordan. For kiffin, the man or the moment will join us here in just a few minutes. Will you have a long list of guests that we will share with you as the afternoon goes on. We're live in Oxford. Hey there, folks. Welcome back to another college football season. Football. And welcome back to another season of fans ville by Dr Pepper. Fans. That little slice of heaven. Every man, woman and student section, drinks Dr Pepper like their life depends on. It does. "In a few minutes, many more guesses as well. We are back after this. You are listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast. A lot to do today, of course, some big guests coming up later and including coach strength. But we are joined right now by lane kiffin, who is here at said coach Kevin's already brought the house down a couple of times today with some of his quips. So I'm going to try something different. I walked in here a minute ago and this is the Lindy's sports college football annual. Lindy's been putting this out for a long time. And I flipped over to the old miss page. I want to make sure I was well prepared for the coach. Coach, I'm going to ask you, they have a scouting report on old medicine. And would you mind reading that for a second? Lane Kevin has always been a loudmouth, but the kids buy into his shtick and turning that program around into a top ten contender deserves praise. Paul fine mom. I did not write it. I promise that sounds like you. But that's just kind of like you because you took a shot but came back and complimented that now. Well, no, you've got nicer in your old age with me. I noticed that that and then so much for, you know, against the spread manner mattering because the year before we got there, there were 8, two and one against the spread, but got fired. So I guess covering the spread doesn't mean a whole lot for coaching. Covering the spread is especially important when you're doing well and you start making a lot of wealthy friends. I guess so I guess it doesn't mean to keep your job. So coach, you've kind of already been through the press conference you were taught the usual questions. Anything today that you wanted that you wanted to talk about that you really haven't had a chance to get into. I didn't really, you know, sometimes you come into these and there's something that you're waiting for someone to ask you and you know are set up when you are you allowed to speak. I remember when we saw you in red duct tape across your mouth. No, I just got letting out the commissioner was good. He'd actually tells a story he was just joking when I saw him because I saw him as we were winning our baseball national championship before the game. In Omaha and met his wife, and I said, do you feel like sometimes you have another child, you know, sometimes he grounds me. So he says his wife has been telling that story for a month. That's a good one. So has the celebration stopped on the campus or are they still, they're still going in a breed med up because this coach coach Bianco, he was in trouble. I talked to a reporter earlier. He told me, I already had the coach fired story written in my computer. Yeah, I mean, that's just amazing for his success that he's had prior to this year for that even via conversation, but you know, it sounds like it definitely was. And I joked before on the golf ball at Tennessee, or the first pitch, when I threw the golf ball and everybody around as well, that's why Tennessee swept us, you know? And I said, wait, I have a plan. I want to just kind of lay low here and then we'll come back and win the national championship in Tennessee will be like the regional runner up. So, you know, it worked out pretty good. It did. We're talking to coach kiffin, of course. Here at SEC media days, you've done this quite a bit. And the media loves to talk to you. I saw one of the reporters told me you had some of the media up to your suite earlier. And I know that it's not like it used to be where you can spend a lot of time, but what do you hope to accomplish when you have media come up? And I'm assuming that's more of a background type session. Well, I just think, you know, as you get older, you do things different if you just, you know, been around long enough and learn from things and stuff. And so relationships matter. And so I'm just always good seeing you guys. You came up and your workout gear. I didn't want to say he was ripped. He's really talked about himself when he says media came up. He was just getting done with his bench press. The truth is. So it was 95 pound bench press. Full disclosure, I was down here earlier when the commissioner was speaking, I had a little bit of a break before the show started. So I went up to the fitness room, and I'm coming out, you know, and a little lemon shorts and the whole outfit. And I run into Kyle, who says, I didn't know you were on that floor. And you said, coach is right there. I'll just come say hello, and I came in and said hello, I didn't intend to come in with a towel around my neck and I would have come better dressed if I knew I was going to get an audience with lane kiffin. No, it was a good look. You like kind of a coach, a lot of us work out right before the game, you know, kind of get outside. So I didn't realize, you know, you did that right before you came on set. Gotta stay relaxed here when you deal with coaches like you and coach rink quits later. This is the easy time. You got what day do you have Sabin and Jimbo? Well, coach Sabin is tomorrow, Jimbo was on Thursday. Okay. That'll be more exciting. I know you're leaving here this afternoon. And I don't make these decisions for ESPN and the SEC network, but you would really be a good guest analyst that day. I would be, but I'm good. I got enough things to do. Can you go anywhere this spring and summer since that happened? I'm sure it comes up wherever you are. That depends if you're an SEC area, yeah. But, you know, I've been in LA and I've been in Boca and so in a lot of talk about that in those days. As a former USC coach, well remember you're out there. Yeah, you do. How would you have liked to have gotten that call and said you're heading to the Big Ten?

"You're unmistakable. I can hear you. I'm unmistakable. Well, I guess Wednesday, you know, starts the darks, the market, the college football season, Kerber is going to take it off to ten 30. The national champion will be in the building. And I know that people want to forget that, but we're going to be there. The dogs are going to be there. I'm going to be there. We're going to be barking. We're going to be loud. We're going to be ready. And we and Paul, you heard it first. Don't be surprised when we win the second win this year. Go dogs. Yeah, I probably would be surprised. What was that guys? Okay, let's go Homer in minden is up next. We have not heard from Homer in many moons, as we say, down south. Homer I am doing wonderfully, what's going on with you? Is there a rope here? Well, tell me about it. What's going on? Oh, I lost. I went back just for flying. Best friend died on me. And I came back. I found out of your spinal stenosis stenosis. Stole it. Oh, sister. I know. I break Harry. 5 days. Only crazy. Or. A type of bad picture. Being yours. Well, there's no volatile. How are you? Homer. I've been great. And let me say how sorry I am to hear about what you have been going through. That is really tough. So on behalf of everybody here, I send you out our best wishes and let's hope for a better year, okay? How's it even? You know, I like Kelly, and I know there's a I was with somebody earlier today. Pretty prominent person. So I can't wait for Brian Kelly to win. Two, shut everybody up. Because I don't understand. I think you're right. I think all the stuff about his accent was pathetically overdone, he's a football coach. He's one of the top 5 football coaches in America. And I think people are just shut up. He knows what he's doing. And he also knew what he was doing by taking that job. He had been at Notre-Dame 12 years or more. And he knew he couldn't win a title. He wanted to go international championship. He told me when we were together in May, in Destin, I want to play, I want to play Nick Saban every year. I want to beat Nick Saban. I want to win a title. That's easy to understand when you're 60 years old. And you have pretty much accomplished everything. We're up against a break, more to come. "You could and quicker. We had 12 guys here for practice right now that our brand new portal college transfers. So that's very unusual. And that will continue, you know, last year we had our center right before training camp. So, you know, it is where it is now. And that is a good thing. You can lose some great players and not dip way down like you did before and have to wait for your freshman to be ready to play. Coach will let you get back to the program. I know there's a lot of activity going on. We look forward to talking to you again very, very soon. Thank you, coach. All right, Paul, thanks, have a good one. You got it. Lane kiffin joining us from pro day where you can tell it was pretty loud and distracting. I felt for him trying to carry on a conversation right in the middle of ball's whizzing by his head. Let's get to the calls here at 8 5 5 two four two. 7 two 8 5 and Mitch is up next. Hey Mitch. I got a question about an article I read. Are you familiar with Bama hammer? No. It's a website. Are you familiar with the journalist Ronald Evans? I am not. He wrote an article of Satan that Tennessee volunteers are now the number one school by employers. Well, I mean, again, I'm sure anybody can say anything or write anything or say or broadcast anything, but I have no earthly idea what he's talking about. A young man committed this past weekend to Tennessee. And he is saying that to conglomerate get together and made an $8 million deal. Well, that is, that was first reported by the athletic and Stewart mandel. We had Stuart on here the other day. And he talked about that story. He was careful how he couched it, because I don't think he mentioned the individual's name. But I do think that that is, but again, there's a big difference between a conglomerate being involved, which in theory is legal and making an accusation that a university is buying a player, which is illegal. That was the headline that taught my attention to reap the article Tennessee volunteer now number one in buying players. Well, I would say that is that is an inflammatory headline and the purpose of that headline is to do what it accomplished and that's to get you and others to read it, but and I know I know I'm parsing words here, Mitch, but that is not accurate. You can no, no. You can get players. I mean, I just got, I just asked lane a minute ago. There are literally agents out there today who are calling people connected to schools saying, hey, if you want this guy, it will cost you X number of dollars. So yes, I mean, in my mind in your mind, schools are buying players. They're not doing it directly though, but they are doing it. No, I agree with everything you're saying. I was just curious if you would even solid. It was the reason why. Well, I've heard about it. I have heard about it. Yes. So it's a new world. And I think coach coach giffen was very low key about it a minute ago. But it is going on. Hey, thank you for the call. Meanwhile, Pete Tamil has an interesting story with all these coaching changes. Many of you were wondering what would happen to Frank Martin really a beloved coach at South Carolina who did TV over the weekend. Thermo is reporting right now that he has emerged as a target in the UMass basketball search. That's a really good basketball job up there in Amherst. John calipari took them to the final four about 25 years ago. We are coming back with much, much more, including the current women's coach of the number one team in the country, dawn staley, she'll join us next. "Are these small things you'll learn, especially 71 total personnel, you see is a busy day too, as we saw Ohio State had their pro day. So there's a lot of NFL scouts that have said, hey, listen, we'll go up to Columbus as well as I think they were like 7 or 8 other schools having their pro day, but that's a pretty sizable crew, Roman. That's down there in Oxford for today. Well, look, anytime you have a quarterback that's being talked about in the first in the first part of the first round, people will show up because you're not going to draft a quarterback if the organization, if the owner, the coaches, and everybody else that has his hand in it signs off on it and says, this is the guy because not only is he going to play for us, but he also has to be the face of your organization when you're quarterback. Greg, when we look at it, and obviously you know how quick the delivery is, arm talent wise. Does he have that, I mean, I don't know if it's Malik Willis type arm strength or JaMarcus Russell for whatever reason, but does he have that strength to snap it on the next level? Yeah. He's got plenty of arm, man. Like the most overrated quality in the entire world when it comes to evaluating quarterback talents, arm talent. Peyton Manning won a Super Bowl when his arm was far from what it once was. I was in that certainly get by if you have a great understanding of how to overcompensate for that arm talent. So if that's something that's potentially lacking and you make up for it by having a shorter release, a quicker release and being able to anticipate throws. I think it is a great job of all those things. I think backgrounds got really good instincts, excellent instincts. Now, this is not a setting in which those instincts will necessarily come to the forefront. But what this is really important to show, you can show that quick release, you can see the ball placement. You can see how we can drop it in the bucket and you really want to see like you heard Todd mcshay tell us earlier. 40% of he can play to 40% of his passes on throws to travel more than 20 yards downfield. That's not a good number. Four guys that are being considered at the top of the NFL Draft. So he's wants to show that now and I think it's a great opportunity to do that here against O defense and to show off some of that arm strength. Well, we are going to start with that in real quick break..

"And with accuracy because that's one thing you loved about him on film. His back shoulder throws. His timing and the accuracy and when he was letting the ball go and also his toughness that he showed throughout the year. So I want to see that again and now that he's healthy, I want to see if we can get these same things kind of implemented again or can we recreate them today? Gmat, as you get a little bit closer to the action there. I mean, what are those routes we will see that he needs to be able to show that he can do to play till the next level. Right now he's actually getting ready to go. He's talking with the wide receivers and the running backs. They're about to do a box drill. I would assume it looks like it's going to be some short area quickness stuff for the whiteouts. And for the running backs, not sure exactly what it's going to be, but we'll see exactly what it is and what Matt corals involvement is. But I think the biggest thing for him, man, is the mobility is huge. That's one thing he was very willing to do. And I think too, man, you got to be yourself. So I appreciate already that there's a little bit of a flavor in this pro day experience because if there's one thing that we know about Matt Carell is that he's hyper competitive, bordering on crazy. Those are things or by the way, crazy in a normal vernacular, not a positive. Crazy in a football vernacular, extremely positive. The guy is extremely competitive. And he's a great leader. He's a guy that a lot of people rally to. So I think showing that and getting showing some energy showing some personality, showing some of that in between some of these throws would be really advantageous because you want to see the guy that you're going to get all the time. And I think the guy that you're going to get all the time is a guy that's insanely passionate about football and pretty much everything he does involving football. Well, and he didn't have to play in the sugar bowl. Remember, there was a big conversation on whether that in Matt corral was asked afterwards, hey, after the injury, do you regret that Roman Harper and he said, absolutely not. He wanted to be there. And I think that's people like that moxie and one of the reasons why they like the attitude of this year. Well, they wanted to get to 11 wins. That was a big deal for old miss as a program and where they were trying to be Matt Carroll wanted to lead his team. He had been there all year. He didn't run from competition. And like grant said, he's a highly competitive guy that has his teammates behind him. That's what you love about him as a quarterback. And that's what you want to hear about a future quarterback on your team. I told you earlier, I still want him to break out the headband at some point because I've never seen him throw a pass without a headband. So I would love to see if grit can maybe get him one from the back. He talks about the swag in the field in the room of what they got going, break out the headband and be even better. G Mac there you go, you got a little homework for you. Going forward. We see him throwing that. That is just what we call what a box drill. Is that what you call to just allowing those guys to kind of run, showing their mobility and move on to the next deal? Yeah, and this isn't really about Matt corral. It's actually funny watching him from the side, just how short his release is, but I'm looking at it. It's kind of like, I mean, it's like throwing darts, man. I mean, there's no wind up. It's straight from the ear. But this really isn't about Matt corral. This drill in particular. It's about the short area quickness and how quickly these wide receivers and running backs can get in and out of brakes. So he's helping them out, but basically he's a camp arm in this drill in particular, but you can still see the fundamentals in the mechanics. Like when you look at Matt corral and you watch him, all right, where's that ball being released from? And some guys have a real long wind up. I mean, we've seen that on several occasions like Sam darnold, for instance, has a very long release. Matt Carell right now just looking at him a few of these throws up close. I mean, there's no wasted motion. It's really quick. And that ball is on the receiver really quickly as well. Is that something that players work on obviously throughout the season they have it and they want to get rid of it as quick as possible, but maybe something corral has worked with his coaches saying, hey, for this day, in particular, we're trying to work on that reaction time didn't just a touch quicker and a little bit more snap. I think at a perfect world, yeah, you'd love to have the shortest release ever and have the quickest release ever like Dan Marino, and the guy's got the best stroke of anyone that's maybe ever played the game. And then you have other guys like Tim Tebow, for instance, who drops it way below his waist, you know, to his mid thigh. And he actually actively worked on throughout the time between his final college game and to the time that he was a first round pick and he was the Indian valuation process. He really worked on shortening up his release. So it's something you can work on, and in these drills, you can showcase the improvements, but it really kind of comes down to who you are on game day. Like as you're thinking about self preservation and you're thinking about, I don't want to get hit, you're going to revert back to what your muscle memory is. So yeah, and these drills you could showcase a more compact stroke, but as things.

"We were cleaned up here in studio, Peter burns, Roman Harper, we're not the only ones though. They're in Oxford, is our cohort always looks good. Greg mcelroy, gmat. You're going to see Matt corral now with Gerry and Ely run some routes early. What do we want to see in this and just overall for the day from that? Well, I'll just start kind of with what y'all were saying. I've been to probably 20 of these. Everyone from dak Prescott to Mac Jones, you know, I've never been to one where that music, ever. This is kind of the first to kind of create, I guess, what is a little bit of a vibe here in the indoor practice facility. Now the big thing with his wide receivers and with the running backs that will be participating. But it's about Matt Carell. As much as we love The White House, as much as I think they have a really talented nucleus of weapons that he's going to be throwing to throughout the next 30 minutes. Matt corral is the guy that's taking center stage. He's the reason why there's four NFL head coaches here in attendance. He's going to have to not just display accuracy, but NFL level accuracy, like we talked about a little bit earlier. NFL level accuracy is not completion versus incompletion and all completions are good throws, not the case. NFL level accuracy is if a throw requires it to be on the left shoulder, it's on the left shoulder if it's the right shoulder is the right job. If it's a face mask, the face mask, we want to see throws like that from Matt Carell and the other thing too, like so many other quarterbacks have done in recent years to become very trendy when it comes to the pro days. We want to see the off platform throws. Things that are really abnormal, things that are uncomfortable to showcase flexibility and raw natural arm talent. So those are the things that we can expect from him today, and then I also think too. He's going to want to show off mobility. Y'all the last time we saw him on a competitive field, he was rolling around in pain. And that's not something that scouts wanted to see at the end of his college career. He's now at a 100%. He's back to fully healthy after the high ankle sprain. Show mobility show that that's no longer going to be an issue and that you have a clean bill of health heading into the next couple of months of evaluation. I would love to see Matt corral on the run. I care less about the wow throws and more about his accuracy and what Greg is talking about. Make sure ball placement is so important in the NFL because the windows and your opportunities to complete passengers are so much smaller. So you have to throw it into tighter windows and can you drive the football in those 25 yard 20 to 25 yard completions over the middle of the football, which a lot of NFL teams run on Sunday. So Roman, you were talking about it. I want to bring you Greg into this conversation as we get ready to watch macare start his pro day. So just that the offense for Matt corral under lane kiffin, how much does that play into what you see in the NFL Roman? Like how much do you see that? Very little, very little. I think lane kiffin is so unique in the way he attacks defense is that you don't see it. There's a lot more formation, a lot more tempo. But when it comes to.

"Welcome back here and don't forget matched income later, we already had lane kiffin, great conversation with lane, Faye is up next in Virginia. Hello fey. Why? Hey, Paul, how you doing? Hey, we're doing great. Thank you. Thank you for taking my call. Well, I want to talk to you about Jackie from Tennessee that I thank you took care of her and the player also. And I just wondered does she have a team in college football? I didn't want to be snotty with Jackie blue there. And. Well, I just like for her to know that every team in the country as far as I'm aware of play lesser teams than they are. And I also tried to call you last week and we got disconnected. I wanted to apologize to you for starting that rumble on her street. It went on and on. Quite a brawl. I certainly apologize. You gave an opinion and obviously a lot of people agreed. Well, Missy, there's some answer wanted to talk to you about a man when he got on that day. He called every, he said every Alabama fans were member of a cult. Right. So I just want him to know that everybody know including myself are not called members. I'm a solid Jesus Christ that we're in favor. But that don't mean I don't football college football and I don't have an opinion. But like I say, I apologize for starting at rumba last week. I really didn't intend for it to take over just about your whole show. And Faye, I appreciate your kindness, but you don't know us an apology. You take care of yourself. Jake is up next. Hello, Jake. Hey, Paul, are we doing? We're doing great. Thank you. I just wanted to pick your brain on something. I've seen kind of a trend over the years, which is an SEC bias, especially when it comes to the rankings, which eventually leads into the playoffs. I mean, you've got a one Alabama team out there who lost to an unranked Texas payment at the time. You still at Ohio State, the loss to now rank for or even though the two lost highest seed team is an SEC team. And a lot of these guys eventually become three, four, 5 loss teams. And I just wanted to kind of pick your brain on the side of it being a bias there. If the only thing I would ask you is, who would you have rank higher than Georgia or Alabama? George definitely deserving of the number one spot. Alabama, I would have to say Oregon House state, even Cincinnati, giving them their shot. You know, I'm going to tell you that Oregon lost to a very bad Stanford team. Correct. But even Ohio State sent out there losing to the number 14 of the nation. It kind of blows my mind that these SEC teams are kind of getting past is almost I think it doesn't matter because we're three weeks away from the final poll in these polls are really TV, TV window dressing, but I think sometimes people in their heads are thinking, and they shouldn't be, but they are. What happened 9 months ago, ten months ago or 11 months ago now when we know how they played Alabama's 28 point game. That should not be a factor. A judge would not let that into a trial. But these are human beings who can't escape that memory. Cincinnati is a different story. Cincinnati is being held back because they play a pathetic schedule. Is it their fault? Not my fault. No, and that I'm looking at as well as Notre-Dame who lost the Cincinnati came off, had to play a couple teams off right off a little by had pretty tough schedule there. And they lose a game and it's almost like they're being held hostage because of that one loss to the most powerful group of 5 teams. Well, I agree with you. But I think Notre-Dame is very good, but you know what, you know, Notre-Dame's problem is the same as always been. They don't have a game at the end of the season to make it up. And last year they were in a good, if they were if Notre-Dame was in the ACC could that championship game put them over the top. It might, it might not, but it certainly would help them. Right now, their season ends next week and they'll sit around and watch everybody move past them. But that's another Notre-Dame goes every more than everyone else. They're the smartest team in America for not being in a conference, aren't they? Steve is up next in Tampa. Hello, Steve, you're on the air. Paul, I hope you're well this evening. I am, thank you. I just want to make a real quick point before I get into Mullen. But so Cincinnati deal, you know, everyone's wants to have 12 teams or 20 teams or 50 teams, but everyone needs to remember that the Cincinnati of the world when they play. Now this year is not a great example, but when they play the top four teams in the country, it's not even it's not even close and it's not pretty. And so what are we why go through that? We found out in the last 15 years that the top 14 are there for a reason. Usually they get a pretty right. But why, you know, I just, I don't believe in doing it for the sake of being politically correct or making people feel included. Because in the end, you know, they just don't compete. And it's a nice story, but again, they don't compete. Mullen has got me I'm a gator fan have been for years. And I've always been a Mullen supporter. For years ever since ever since he came to Florida with urban Meyer. And, you know, he's done kind of quirky things. And I was talking to your screener about the dark Vader thing..

"And lane kiffin joining us shortly right now Katie George joining us of course on the call for the Tennessee Alabama. Katie, great to talk to you again. So I think I've asked you a few times this year about quarterback situations. We all want to know about hooker. What's his status? Well, your guess is as good as mine at this point. We haven't had our conversations with Tennessee's coaches and Josh hypo yet they're arriving in Tuscaloosa around 6 p.m. Eastern Time. So then we're hoping that he'll hedge a little bit and give the broadcast crew an idea as to where hindon is at if he was, in fact, able to go through practice this week, you know, obviously we saw Joe Milton at the end of the old miss game, but, you know, we just wrapped up our meetings with Nick Saban and Alabama's coordinators. And echoed the same sentiment we just heard from his Monday press or that, you know, they're both similar and what they are capable of doing. They're both big physical runners. So you have to watch there. Obviously, Tennessee runs the football really well. I'm in both have strong arms that can beat you downfield. So doesn't necessarily change the way that Alabama is coming into this game from a defensive standpoint, but certainly changes. I think what we'll see from Tennessee. So I'll be very curious to see what John hypo has to say here in a couple hours. Katie, on the Alabama front, give us a sense of what you learn from those coaches. I know it may not be a whole lot different than what Sabin said earlier, but it's almost as if he was trying to sell this game to the fan base in terms of how good Tennessee is. What a great job. Hypo has done all those things are accurate. But they're still quite a spread. At least in terms of the public perception in Vegas's perception between these two schools. Yeah, there is. And I actually had a chance to join him on his radio show last night at a local restaurant here in Tuscaloosa where he was saying to the fans, look, it's homecoming. We haven't been home in a really long time, right? It feels like a long time after going to College Station and start fill. So he said, you know, we want to warm welcome from our fan base and then we have a biweek next week. So this is your chance, you know, to come and create an unbelievable atmosphere for us. And you know, actually have an impact in the game on that fast tempo offense at Tennessee likes to run, but you know, practice yesterday, he kind of wrapped it up with a message to his group of look, you know, your identity is not created in one game. You played a complete performance against Mississippi state a week ago, but can you do it again? Can you put together back to back performances? Can you be mature enough to have that consistency that we need if we want to be a special team? So that's the charge to this Alabama team is can you go out and do it again for all four quarters? Katie George joining us from Tuscaloosa Katie, thank you very, very much. We really appreciate it. We'll be watching tomorrow night. Of course..

"Laying out breadcrumbs back 11 years to the cost and excuse for the fan insurrection, so to speak, it was just off the charts. Please tell me you were joking when you said you're going to have them on for three hours next week. Yes. I mean, you have to remember. I'm entertained by him because I know how I'm not an actor, but I did a play once, many, many years ago and I know how long it takes to memorize your lines to get the staging right, the movement right. And so I admire the art of my Griffith. I really do. These outrageous, but this will probably be an interesting game in the fact that Coachella will try and look like he's coaching well, kippen will be coaching for the other guy's job. Yeah, I don't know if that's exactly what's going to happen. But lane kiffin's name has certainly been mentioned in association with that position. Hey, thanks for the call, John. Great to hear from you. Matt is up next. Well, you got map. It was a fun moment. We are doing well. I want to tell you about Texan in football. I believe they're going to win the rest of their games. Paul and go ten and two this year. They want to put a whoopin on LSU and old miss in auburn. But I wanted to I want to ask you a question. Who do you think going to hire? She's going to hire her coach. She thinks Milan kiffen or you think it's going to be that guy from Michigan. State. You know, I really don't. I'm not sure. And I think lane's name is certainly been mentioned quite often. And he is a very hot coach hey. Thanks for the call Matt. Speaking of lane kiffin, we'll talk to him in a couple of minutes. Sam pittman joining the show damian pierce max johnson. Who are you most excited to talk to. You know i'm not gonna lie. I love coachman. yeah he's he's one of the nicest guys. When i was at arkansas couple of weeks ago he came up to me on the sidelines. This is before the game and he was just like. I'm really proud of what you're doing and i was like. I think you're great. I'm proud of what you're doing. He's awesome We will of course talk about the big arkansas georgia game coming up this weekend. Hog fans probably a little nervous about that one. I will say got to see that georgia defense up close and personal this past week graha. They're tough yeah. That's what i was gonna ask. You saw them in person like are they bigger faster stronger in person because they're big fast and strong on tv. It's unbelievable we were on this show last week. Saying one thing. I know one thing i think i know one thing i wanna to find out more about and my one thing i know last week was georgia defense. Best defense in the country. After the person. I interviewed jordan davis after that game. Sixty two nothing by the way is the finals. Sixty two nothing. I looked like a three year. Old next. To jordan davis. Yeah i can see that. Three hundred fifty pound six foot when i was just like. Hey arm doesn't cramp holding this. I would like semi bet. He's going to beat you in a race. Like he's that big but he can move. The guy can move on a little offended by that. I don't see anything run track and field. He's he's We also have a really fun piece coming up on the show with you. An auburn a couple of auburn tigers. Who you were there as they got it out that win this past weekend l. p. so i spent some time with sukuzi mclean in chandler. Newton their linebackers auburn and that linebacker unit coach. Hartson has said is kind of the core of the team at georgia state. I'm not gonna lie. That first half they were getting hit. I mean running up the middle georgia state had success running the football which is something that has been pretty good at but the kobe mclean. Didn't play in the first half and the difference that i've visibly saw you talk about seeing teams on the sidelines when i was on the sidelines in the second half in kobe mclean was back on the field. Energy was lifted. Everybody was playing harder. He's hyping everybody up getting the fans involved in so just to kind of talk to him since time with him. He's goofy he can dance chandler dad of the team right just many time with both of them. I mean it was great. Chandler wooten ricochet rabbit. Correct toby mclean ricochet koby yet A coby also. The guy who in summer workouts was like eating crab legs on the football field. You know pretty sure. It wouldn't surprise as our producer. J. mac just just reminded me at a fund auburn team nonetheless. You did do that game though as we get ready for the show tonight auburn one of those teams that were still trying to figure out what was the biggest takeaway from that game for you. Well i think the impact of the. Kobe mclean on defense huge. They obviously made a quarterback change. And i notice tj finley when he got in the game the energy was lifted like everyone seemed really excited about what he could bring in coach. Arsons that after the game it wasn't a knock on bo. It wasn't a knock him at all. He just thought they needed something different. So i'm interested to see. It's interesting because tj finley played lsu so while he might be a big lift. Lsu's familiar with him as well. So is that going to work. And then their receivers there were a lot of passes that were through the receivers hands. They got a new receivers coach. How much impact is that going to make in one week. No but they're going to have to make some place that's going to be a fun game. We've got so many good games. It's unbelievable coming up in this week. We haven't even mentioned ole miss alabama yet. We're going to talk about that game as well and really get into some of the numbers because if you forgot about that match up from twenty twenty i believe it was one hundred eleven. Total points scored between those two. Were really going to break down. What these two offenses look like. And what both of these two teams need to do to get the win. Because if you ask me. It's not signed sealed deliver alabama certainly this year and. I'm very excited for this for picking our top five players across the sec. And we're gonna see how our teams go head ahead. Mine.

Thank you I just think he's so refreshing and just a great addition every respect To the sec. So thank you for him second. What a home run. Having adam burke and bruce feldman on in the same afternoon My take is. Bruce is probably the top of his game and at some point I would like you to get your take on that third and this one address three people. Mike will bomb stephen smith colin cop now. These guys are talented. obviously have a great following. But here's the problem paul. They consider themselves experts in major league. Baseball the nfl the nba. The ncaa basketball the nc. Double a. football. Which is frankly a sham. And you called mike out appropriate in my view. There's only one vote in college football and that you we appreciate you and we appreciate your show. Thank you thank you joe. Let me let me say that. I appreciate what you said but what those guys do They they offer an opinion on calisthenics and and that is extremely difficult. I'm not defending the tag. I've already said what i have to say about that. But i've been on. Some of these programs were suddenly though hits you about the nfl hit you about and you can't be an expert on everything. I mean no matter how much you prepare It's difficult to really keep up with all of that. And when you're doing your show. I you're covering the masses so which you need Is is to be is to have people that are supplying you with information and someone really should have just said mike because th that's not an extemporaneous show they. They know the topics in advance. And maybe he didn't give his take early but somebody should stopped him I wish i had because frankly i would have been more than happy to To tell mike we're We're lane kiffin is right now but anyway it. It's a it's a it's a show. it's not. I mean let's not get carried away with any any of the comments that any of us make Their just opinions and their They get thrown out with garbage at the end of the day. Just like sometimes Callers takes do red. Red dog is paul. How many points do you think the piglets are going to score this weekend. I dunno leaning on the poet laureate of Georgia football to give me an answer. I'm thinking and i you know when i saw the spread. Come out i was like i didn't think it'd be more modest fourteen But i can understand. Because i think georgia scores thirty fos. Arkansas scored twenty gets am. I don't think there's no way though school more than ten maybe three so maybe way off. And i'm just telling you you know we just want this play defense all day that and i'd be more interesting but You know. I think we're gonna wear arkansas out. They have no. I asked arkansas fan. I saw in atlanta. I said y'all ready to beat the dogs and untrue. Honestly the guy goes. We're going to try. And he looked scared so i'm ready to dogs will be on top and we're ready to play bama and beat bamaca's bama is a weak link. How about them dogs fall. Dogs calvin is calling next good afternoon. Calvin from florida I for nets. usc head coach be hugh freeze. Okay and other than the fact. He's a good football coach. Can you can you give me any other reasons why you think you would work out there. I think with his recruiting talents and being in california what he was able to do it. All miss Something as enticing as being in in california. I think would be really great for recruits. They were able to pull corey form and Is clay out. And i think skies with free calvin. He's a very good coach. I think it's highly unlikely he gets a job. John is in louisiana john. John you there. Yeah i'm in los angeles louisiana. John i i i apologize for that when i see la next to a name. I'm taking louisiana. I i. I wouldn't but but we're happy to have you from la los angeles now. I totally understand that. I i really don't Like i said it's somebody that's never met me never covered us. Never been around us You know to say that never. I've never done anything. you know. Whatever it was kinda like so far out there. That kind of got to laugh at it did you. Do you feel always interesting asking somebody to evaluate themselves. But do you feel like a different coach. Then you were eight or nine years ago. I do completely I joke with you about you. Know saying finebaum. But i think what you said at. The time was probably probably realistic to what was happening and immature and very young and made a lot of the state. So i would like to think that. I've grown in different now and and before you go coach we're success you. You get a lot of attention and your name gets connected and i. I know how much you enjoy the job. And i know what you're fans think of you. How how how do you deal with the noise always. Has you being linked somewhere else. Well i think michael for that. Nobody would ever hire me even in high school based on what he said yesterday so maybe he just was helping us because we get. I complain about rat poison all the time. He gave us exactly opposite. How does ole miss get creative with. Nal's to start taking people from alabama. Well you do have a lot of people here in state that you know level mitzvah bar barn wanna help out and want to support players so As we go through this and learn more about it said those things up on. I think it's it's a good advantage to us I'm not saying we're alabama but or a lot better situation than most places lane. How does this work. The some big booster. Just come up to you and say lane. I got a whole bunch of money burning money in my pocket. How do i give it to your program. Well how do. I do this all legally now that it's not. We're not faking it anymore. How what what are these conversations. Look and sound like i want to help your program by paying some of your players I send them to compliance. Go over there and talk to him so That's about the only answer. I have on that for you. Do you like it when when nick sabin is saying. My quarterback who hasn't played yet is about to get a million dollars in endorsements. Is this a change. That lane kiffin likes yet. That wasn't on purpose at all. It wasn't said knowing that that was going to go national. And just throw it out. You know close to dollars you know that didn't just like really upset Rest of the sec. That would have no impact in recruiting. All how did you receive the news of texas and oklahoma coming over to your conference in a blatant money. graham. I read on the ticker So I think it's good. You know the sec's most powerful by far now. Lead me more. So no you're recruit. How do you not go to the sec. And especially as you talk bout name. Orange likeness contracts. How much they're gonna make all the money around with tv contracts and attention on on the conference or kinda like you're going to have division one division to everybody else. What is the thing about texas and oklahoma coming over to your conference. That people aren't talking about enough or are missing that you find interesting. I think it'll be strange. I have some tradition in me. What with sports in college football I just think that's a strange scene. You xs are oklahoma. Going enda tuscaloosa. You know or athens just and had been no conference game that would be every year or divisional game every year. that's just strange to me but sure it used to like am go. What something having left the nfl and come back to college football that you look as a man. I'm glad i don't have to deal with that anymore. I just on a positive. I like college. Because i. I like how kids play and care and i'm not saying players don't care enough fell but the best example that to me makes sense is in college. You choose where you're going like. And most of the time. I grew up wanting to go there are i want to be this player. That played there like a passion to go from the state in until they choose you. So i'm of course you want to win and all that stuff but it's just a different energy and passion towards the game and tell now you're getting paid so you know the there was a different sarah to you know a job versus you know a choice. Have you had any funny eccentric. Strange interactions with mike leach. Since both of your now wandering around the conference and he is one of the most unusual characters anywhere in the history of leadership is is very unusual. Yes in just did a state or county fair which had state county a county fair in mississippi together. So i don't think we ever thought that they would seem that. Were up in chairs and a no barn thing that i might hannah. Montana's gonna come out or something but Every every encounter is unique. Yes would you be kind enough please. To just set the scene for us the county fair with lane kiffin and mike leach. Any all details. You could give us please. Well not as fun as you would like because we were actually. I was recruiting so actually just flew in landed. Did it got back on the plane and bacteria or so Not not as exciting as you would think would have stayed there overnight and But knowing leach. I guess it's like an eight bay sarah that they stay at. So i'm knowingly. Cheap probably stayed a lot longer than me. When competition with coach li over a recruit. Would you rather go before coach leach. Or after 'cause i gotta think there is aid just an inherent advantage be going at was weird and then go into your show yeah. I think we'd rather go after on that. Let him kind of goes leads style on them. And then we'll we'll come in and actually let them talk so it'd be different coach of wondering you said the county fair. Are there any dunk tanks at the county fair. in have you ever sat in a dunk tank. I don't think i've sat one. We did have one at our spring game on through the losing coaches and players I don't know if there was one of the county fair wasn't there long enough The ought to walk around and see. But i'm sure there was more generally for lane kiffin. The highlights of a county fair are what more generally because you've established. Hey i was in and out there. Very busy recruiting. I don't have time to throw tomatoes at a maiden or go to the axe chop so give us whatever the axe throw. Whatever the details of the county fair.

"Nba fired coach deserves. Well probably the respected. I'm getting but nonetheless. I want to be treated with more respect. This is the donlevatar show with stu. Gods of cody. I wanted to get your thoughts here on something that has been on the docket for about five days that we have not gotten to. Which is that exhibit. Howard the quarterback for the miami dolphins who has more interceptions than anyone in the league over the last three years. He's been exceptional for the miami dolphins and for some reason brian flora's continues to run on the wrong side of some of his best players. You can make the argument that xavien howard has been the most productive dolphin over the last couple of seasons of any kind and he wrote on instagram. the following. I've given my heart and soul to the miami dolphins franchise since they draft in two thousand sixteen and wanna make it clear that i love my teammates. They're my family. But what i've learned is that the business side of the nfl proves organizations don't always have a player's best interests at heart. My experience with the dolphins the past few years has taught me that in two thousand eighteen. I signed an extension that. I'll admit i didn't completely understand or feel comfortable with. I played on that deal for two seasons in complain. But everyone knows i've significantly outperformed that deal. I'm one of the best quarterbacks in the nfl and the tape back up that claim the assignments. I'm giving shattering the opposition's best player with little help proves my value my worth yet. I'm the second highest paid cornerback on my o team and it's not even close. I want to clear up a few misconceptions about my situation. My agent david canter. And i have never once asked for completely new contract. Wanted things to work out with the dolphins and brought solutions to the table guarantee more money we felt were win wins for both sides there. Were these were proposals of adjustments. That wouldn't just make me feel more respected but would also be kept friendly but the dolphins refused everything propose. That is why. I don't feel like the organization is dealt with in good faith. I don't feel valued or respected by the dolphins. Just like they can take a business. I approach so can i. That's why i wanna make it clear. I'm not happy and have requested or trade until that trade happens. I'm just here so i don't get fined and we'll handle myself like professionals. Do greg cody. You're consistently pro management anti-labour. You are consistently a homer on behalf of the miami dolphins. What are your thoughts here. I wrote a column late last week. That exhibiting howard is one hundred percent right here. The dolphins tomato mess that they need to fix. And i think that they've had sixteen months to see this coming. And you know the level of frustration that happened in private in the background for it to come to that instagram posts where he's requesting a trade and being very specific about his frustrations sixteen months ago in free agency. They signed byron jones to a contract. Appreciably better than existing howard's contract byron jones who who had two interceptions last season to howard's ten exhibiting howard's the best player in the league at an essential position arguably the most valuable position other than quarterback and the dolphins need to make this right It it's not going to set a terrible precedent. You don't renegotiate everyone's contract you treat players differently. You keep happy the best players on your team. If it's a lousy guy a backup requesting a reworked contract then you take a hard line xavien howard and you're and he's not even the best paid cornerback on your team. You gotta make that right. Not everyone is using just interceptions as a stat so many people will look and say that exhibiting howard is a top five. Cornerback not the best quarterback but regardless he is somebody however you're doing the measurements. That is one of your best players if not. You're single most productive players. The thing that jumped out to me that i have not normally seen in these situations is him saying in his trade request. My brother my fellow. Cornerback that i'm in all these meanings with it's one thing for you to say great for him to put his name on. I'm underpaid compared to this guy and it's not even close saying that boldly. I'm better than this guy and deserve more money. You don't see that very often no it again for it to come to that point publicly. You know that The frustration that was building up and building up and building up over the past sixteen months. Not just this training camp fi. May i actually agree with what greg is saying. But i'm gonna wear the fan hat right now for a second and do the spoiled athlete thing. You didn't understand the deal that made you at the time. The highest paid cornerback in the league. I understand how that can happen. But the fact is you set the high water mark and since then people looked at that contract and that's how the nfl works for every position. Joe flacco has a ridiculous contract. Matt stafford as more ridiculous contract and we keep building up and we keep complaining about. When does it end. This was two thousand nineteen when he signed this deal at a certain point. You got to kind of honor. That no i would say that the frustration that they have as collectively bargained partners is you've got to honor that right up until the contracts are one in the teams can rip them up whenever they want. Their objection is actually to their own management to their own players union to their own structure that they agreed to their railing. And this is why. I thought you mentioned don van nada homeless or gaylord. Perry is we like to call man. It's easy to mix them up. Don van not wrote a story explaining to you. Hey the players union has done some unsealing things here. Damore smith has been an ally to the owners in a way that has allowed these guys to get railroaded in ways that they don't even understand. And here's the and howard saying. I'm in a bad system. Most people would agree with what you're saying. He has been objectively better than anybody who is playing the position on his team. And he's looking across. Imagine if that was happening in this workspace here or in yours. Greg where someone is putting their name on. I'm not paid correctly. According to our structure. I should be paid better than this guy. Who's my teammate. Who's in these meetings. I was surprised to see that sentence in there. It's different for you to say it. Greg them for him to say it. I totally agree it. It's not surprising that he would think it but to put that in in words publicly was surprising and it expresses exactly his his anger in his frustration at the whole situation and that the dolphins. Let's get to this. I think the most natural thing in the world is to compare your salary versus other people salary particularly people you work with and you know. It's one thing if the quarterbacks getting paid more than you because that's a positional thing but for another cornerback. Who you know. you're better than getting a better deal than than you have I can i totally get that frustrates. You realize though that basically what he said the in social media form this is why. I'm finding it to be so interesting. When do you ever hear. I'm better than byron joan. Because it's what he just said. I'm this dude that i'm in a meeting room with with my teammate. And a team sport the ultimate team sport. I've just put my name on. Hey you guys all know that. I'm better than this dude right. It's just not something you see. Very often donlevatar. Let's go to Eighty wow i think billy at eight instead of a b five day ball high guts never corner on the lines easy. Dcc donlevatar show with.

"It's not one this rally contested. it's one point eight. One point three met corner. One point two seven post up his overtop guy staying like this point seven eight so you run your team down there and we'll see how long you stay with teams. They can play the other way so for thirty or forty years basically. We're playing the game totally wrong. One was the three point line invented since it was invented. We're playing the game. Teaching the game inefficiently wrong. So i want to read you this quote i mean and greg and i'm not gonna tell you what or who is from the quote is i've hated the three for twenty years. That's why i make a joke all the time. And say if we're gonna make it a different game let's have a four point play because everybody likes. Everybody likes the three. They'll really like the four people will jump out of their seats. If you have a five point play it'll be great. There's no basketball anymore. There's no beauty in it. It's pretty boring but it is what it is and you need to work with it and quote. Do you know who that quote is from. I don't gregg popovich and my question to you is. If that's the way you think. And i hate to say this about any coach gregg popovich. If that's the quote you're attaching your name to is the game literally passing you by because you don't want to play the way that others want to play and you kind of hate. The modern form of basketball enter begrudgingly trying to play that style then their quotas years old. I believe it was right around the time they won the championship by shooting attack. Two thousand eighteen. The quotas from two thousand eighteen from greg. Greg greg papa. John's point wasn't that that's the wrong way to play. His point was if we want to win. We have to play that way but from an aesthetic standpoint pure standpoint. It kills me that we have to play that way. And i agree with them totally and i think part of it is an age thing television. I probably around the same age. And you know. I was weaned on best while i was a huge expand back in the day. You know the team with havlicek can in russell and sam jones. You know hitting bank shots up glass and it was just an all around better game. I thought you saw you saw talented players. Doing more different things god. There wasn't an obsession with threes. And i thought it was a a more beautiful game to watch havlicek and we're gonna do. Havlicek was the most beautiful game when used to jog in to the arena from the subway station with a basketball under his arm. That that's when the game damn right. That's that's when the game was best in the nineteen fifties when the opposing center had a second job as a plumber right. When's the last time you saw lebron james with a best well under his are riding the subway to the gym. Am i right wittingham. Give me what you got here before. I get to that sound of chris russo. Yelling about havilcek. So cody can hear what he sounds like. Very quickly john havlicek and his first all star season shot under forty percent from the field. But also secondarily of the san antonio spurs. I understand what you're saying. Which is that in theory. Gregg popovich is not dictating his style of play based on his thoughts. But the san antonio spurs were last in the nba last year in three points attempted so he he is also and i understand. That's partly personnel. But i think even an ideal world he's not going to become the antoni no but i don't i'm not gonna sit here and make it seem grandpa. Popovich is coaching resistant to three point. Three point shot when again when they won their championship. That was a major major Piece of their arsenal their personnel. Obviously were a lot better at it than they had last year And by the way even what. Dan dan dan. Tony said dan. He was an assistant coach with us and phoenix. He's right in in the numerical values there but he's kind of ignoring in that kind of hard line stance that the reason why posts ups yields too low points per possession value. Part of it is. We don't have good posts up players basketball players. They don't know how to post up. They don't have good footwork. That's why when you see a yokich and he does it. We're all fainting. Oh my god. It's on sabu yet because nobody does it anymore and he has. He knows how to do it. So i would say not all postal equally second of all when he says we want to get to the free throw line as much as possible because one point five points per possession there. Well how do you think you get to the free throw line by posting people up and make another guy's getting fouled trouble sometimes the things that we do on a basketball court don't always yield immediate dividends. Sometimes it's the long con so to speak greg. This is what you sound. Like accept less entertaining. Less flamboyant less energetic as you long for a time before black guys played how. 'bout class mike. Mike sacramento's.

Nick Saban Gets Direct With Reporter After Bryce Young Comment
"Let's get going with the biggest college football game of the weekend. At least in terms of the sec. And that's the alabama scrimmage and all is tomorrow are going to be on bryce young you would assume he's the man now assuming anything with nick saban. You may be where you mentioned. Bryce being the guy right now how happy are you that he going to play with the ones all right. So that's the way it's going to be. How are you that. He's been able to kind of progress the way he has. Ben and you find. He's more confident now. Well how do you know that. He's progressed away has been. What have you seen that. Be able to make that statement. First of all i mean. I'm happy with his progress. I don't want you to think that. But i just want i don't know where you sorta can just come out and make that statement but i'm happy with his progress. I think he's played well this spring. I think he showed good. Leadership is made progress. I think he understands the offense worked. Hard So you know i can make the statement because i watched them practice every day. But i don't know how much practice you saw. And and there's no truth to the rumor that the reporter is now in the witness protection program lane kiffin watching that from afar. He used to watch it from a distance. Saying this made my day the go-to always en- game day mode. Even with spring practice

David Kellum, Voice of Ole Miss, Talks About How He Got His Start at Ole Miss
"David kelham. Who is the voice of the ole miss rebels He's been part of that program for going on for decades And you know what a time to be at ole miss with the football program under lane kiffin the basketball program doing quite well and then the baseball program only being number one in the country we had One of the stars of the team on the other day and david. I know. Fridays are pretty busy times with baseball and everything. But we appreciate you making time for us and how are you sure doing great polyp sitting at the box waiting for us to play belmont here at six thirty our time. So it's great. You called me the perfect time but good to be only. I have seen this before in her different friends. But i would be intrigued the because sometimes it takes a long time to get a a prime job like you have now especially with the the just the absolute zeal for almost baseball but You apparently got started pretty early. Yep i started basically in highschool to be honest with that kind of tricked tricks my way into this job I was a senior in high school. My mother was professor suter. Don't miss and i used to hang out of her office a lot and radio. Tv was under theater and campus radio station which was w cbi at that. Time was carrying ole miss baseball and it was on cable. Only the students were gone. The professors were known. This guy comes blowing out of the station ex. My mother's office and he's gotta find somebody these games. Everybody's gone and so. I told him i said i can do him. He said who are you. Don't even go was and so. He thought hosted freshman. Ole miss which i was not as a senior high school. But i did the seventy seven. Sec tournament for ole miss on the campus radio station as a eighteen year old. So that's how. That's how. I got my and they hired by the local radio station. The final years that this jack you know how that goes and started doing baseball and seventy eight. It's baseball and women's basketball through. Eighty eight became the lead announcer in football men's basketball and continue to baseball in eighty nine. I mean that's i'm always Always admire people not only for for excelling but being able to to stay in a job. That long. And i don't mean that i mean and i say that because there's all misses the perfect exception it is the perfect example there. There are a lot of changes that have happened then. You never really know what's going to happen. I've seen it firsthand with When when i first started in birmingham legendary voice of the crimson tide was out with a new a new administration. How how how do you hang on. And i don't mean hang on. How do you stay in the job like that. For for as long as you do considering the politics of of intercollegiate athletics. Just don't criticize the coaches and you told a long time ago point. Because they rarely they rarely pop up these jobs to. There's more opportunity now. I teach a class at old miss. We're not teaching this spring because of the pandemic but i teach sportscasting class. And when i got my shot to be in radio radio was basically it. I mean you didn't have the live streaming opportunities the podcast opportunities and all the things that are going on today And so it has been difficult. But it's funny. you should mention. I've had kids through the years that like meet the rebels day would come up to me and say i'm gonna have your job someday and i soon i've got a few more years. You know thinking back my mind but this past year A kid said that's means that ten years old and hit him. Like you might be the one because i put in a tiny years this point when i got started John waters at tennessee. Larry months was the georgia jim. Five was it auburn jet crystal. Was it stay. You had k would lead for Kentucky rely at alabama. Mickey floor. Jim halt on lsu had just started a little bit before me. And then of course. Later we get all eels outta arkansas about voltage for south carolina and more recently dave south from texas mike kelly from missouri. But that list of names Just incredible announcers across this leaks. And when i first got in the youngest announcing the sec felt very very fortunate. The following year Our buddy west. Durham came in Demand or bill before we went to go to georgia tech. He became the second youngest announcer. We're sitting at a football media days in birmingham which of course you know all about vendor several of them and we're not a little broadcast meeting we're looking around the room and some of those names that just mentioned for sitting there and westland over to me now. He's got a legendary dad. He grew up with and woody but he said you intimidated. I said apps so We were surrounded by that early in our careers which is really really cool. And unique to get to know those men and lean on those that we were kinda the young bucks at the time and that we've kind of become not necessarily legends but longevity We're we're the ones that have been around a while.

Coaching search updates: Kevin Steele the favorite at Auburn
"Obviously we're in the middle. Coaching carousel to and i think the most interesting one right now is auburn I think they spent twenty one point. Five million dollars to buy out gus malzahn. We could argue whether he should have been fired or not the end of the day. He lost the momentum there and they the boosters put the you know got out the hat and collected the money and they fired him. So you think okay. You're gonna fire Coach gus malzahn. All that money. You're going to want to go out and get like the splashes possible coach. You can get tell us who's actually leading the coaching search right now as we reported this morning. That sources are telling me that the front runner for this job right now is defensive coordinator kevin steele and while that may blow some people's minds. He has some very very influential people at auburn who are big believers in him and in his corner at auburn. Especially that matters right so look We have a story up but the athletic now about who's in the mix there and the ones. I think one of the people who is really a big contender against kevin steele on this front is lane. Kiffin at ole miss But i think he would have a hard time turning that job down. I think he's obviously a big name. Now he's foreign four. It's it's interesting in that. I think a saturday's game between ole miss and lsu doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot. You know outside of those two programs. But i think it may may need a little bit of something potentially at auburn as crazy as it sounds because for some people at auburn i think they could shape it and saying all right kevin steele dreadful run as the head coach at baylor twenty. Plus years ago he was one and thirty one in big twelve. Play at baylor is a long time ago but people. I've talked to down there have made the case where you know what at had a bad record. The first time he was a head coach and he just won a national title a year ago. And my my counter. That was well. He did have to times as interim pretty lengthy runs where he was at least able to show people he's evolved and grown and those people said look a people at auburn feel like kevin steele's been the guy who's hold it together for them the last few years he is very well respected within the scc And so also know how. Attractive is lane to auburn. He did a really good job at fau their foreign You know if he loses to. Lsu's not very good this year. He's foreign five. I think probably diminishes a little bit No its first year. It wasn't like anybody expected out all messed great. But he's definitely a candidate As billy napier from louisiana Maybe who freezes is somebody that that auburn would push for. I think and you still have steve sarkisian there. You know also in the state of alabama So it's a really interesting. Search in auburn is wildly unpredictable. What does but From what i heard they would love to have a coach Decided upon by the beginning of next week

Atlanta - Social media thrilled with JT Daniels performance, but ponders why Kirby Smart didn’t play him sooner
"From dog nation. Social media thrilled. Jt daniels performance. But ponders why kirby smart didn't play him. Let's welcome in the author of that article connor. Thank you for being with us. First of all. Let's talk about the good news. I the fact that he played well for those who missed the game and it was not exactly the feature game of the day How did he play. I thought he was fantastic. Four hundred yards four touchdowns as the first georgia quarterback to do that since twenty thirteen for a program that has had lingering questions about this going back even pass through the twenty nine thousand nine season to have a performance like this especially when they couldn't run the ball. At all this was the worst rushing performances. One thousand nine hundred eighty six which is a total yards. Jt daniels doesn't play the way he does it. I think it's pretty fair to say. The georgia probably loses to mississippi state team numbers. Not that highly thought of coming into saturday. We're talking to kinda raw and lane kiffin alluded to that as well. Which is just a shocking statement. Is it not that we we ended up getting to this point for those who have not followed the vagaries connor of jt daniels. Do we know what the hold up was with him. in terms of clarence yeah so. His dad came out and made some comments today. You can read them a dog nation where he wasn't one hundred percent ready to go and august and even september. We know he wasn't clear to play in. That arkansas game came out right before the auburn game. Second game of the season and said jt daniels physically clear to play. Football games and reality is yours. Second game of the year. We didn't end up seeing him until the seventh game. We know he took that knee. Brace off prior to the tennessee game and practices in warm ups. But for whatever reason we didn't see him it may have been an issue of how comfortable he was in his knee. And the level of mobility that kirby smart was looking for that's something he's referenced. Many times based off what we saw on saturday that mobility was there the ability to make plays in really. I think the biggest question at least fans people who follow the program asked me or how close was jt daniels to what we saw on saturday back on november seventh when georgia played florida because if daniels plays like he did on saturday against florida. There's a real chance of jordan. Finds a way to at least made that game closer and possibly even win. It just truly amazing to think about how different this georgia season is and while they're having a better season than most two losses of Effectively out and georgia was expecting to be in atlanta at the end of the year and not watching on television or playing in another game. Just give us your your your read on the energy that has now maybe been brought back to a program that was seemingly dead in the aftermath of the florida game. It was a it was a mighty big fall from grace. Do you think this is going. Yeah people's energized. Even i think if. Jt daniels keeps playing away. He does. It is gonna keep people interested in tuned in the rest of the season. 'cause you point out. This is georgia program. Where going eight and two this year in a burst in the peach bowl. That doesn't do it for them. There was a lot of negative energy around this program. Losing the florida so for daniels will come out. Look good look like a possible at least certainly this season and potentially even long term solution at the quarterback position there for georgia. I think that's huge place. While again against south carolina and finishes the season out strong. I do think that can build a lot of momentum towards that twenty twenty one season when a lot of these skill players. That played really well on saturday night. Also come back to the storage team.

What Will Coach Nick Saban's Absence Mean For Alabama Football Game Against Georgia On Saturday?
"To Jordan Rogers Course the Tennessee Kentucky game to mark Jordan. Let me bounce around a little bit and everybody's talking. Around the country about Auburn about Obama and Georgia and Nick Sabin. You've been on the field with head coaches and you how important that position is except nick? Sabin doesn't really do much on the offensive side, but he does a lot on the defensive side. What what would what will his absence mean? Demar on that sideline? I think it's huge and I would argue quickly Paul I. Think he does do a lot on the offensive side. I have able to sit down and watch a ton of Alabama TV film writer TV Games because we're I'm usually broadcasting a game remember back when it was Lane Kiffin Colin place remember how much we saw them but in heads and communicating on the sideline. So there are a lot of adjustments in feedback that Nick Sabin Gibbs. To operative coaches but again, the defensive side is going to be missed most here's what I'll say I like I. Haven't seen good teams have great game plants going into Games. Great teams make great adjustments in. That's the difference with Nick Sabin, his ability to adjust in game going back to the National Championship game against Georgia pull the plug on. jalen hurts put to a ton of low in. That's a big adjustment that you see so many. Small. Adjustments that come from the minded Nick Sabin in game because he's done this. So long at such a high level things that people don't see that he's able to see and he has an instinct. So that's where they're gonNA miss him the most in a close game when adjustments need to be made and as well on the opposite side. Right? You've got a guy that good of defense he's going to walk over to Steve Sarkisian go hey. If they're playing this coverage. Here's where the week I'd go this right. He's GonNa give subtle adjustments and hints and tips to what to do on both sides of the ball. So I think the the presence, not only from a figurehead of what he means to that program, but the ability to adjust in Game I. Think it's a big loss.

Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin on college football in a pandemic
"Really looking forward to this next guest. He's Lane Kiffin head coach at Ole Miss and coach Kiffin joining us from campus as. The rebels still have a little bit of time to coach. How's it going? Good afternoon great. I'm really looking forward to the interview to all on the same page well. Okay You promised me the other day you tape the coaches meeting last Thursday morning, and you're going to play it for us with all the descent going on. So can you just hit the play button and we'll all sit back and listen. I don't think that the commissioner be very happy about that. Paul. It was interesting call. Well, we we've been reading about it and and I know you pretty well, I doubt that. You were one of those complaining, but I would imagine you. You've been part of this league twice now What's it like? Being reunited with all your esteemed colleagues. Well, it's interesting I. Didn't realize until that first SEC meeting that we had in Birmingham this time around and I believe if I'm right coach saving, myself were the only ones. Were the only ones in the meeting that were there in whatever two, thousand nine in Tennessee won the day I took the job. So I just saw today and I realize you're your coaching football you're not in charge of the stadium, but I thought governor a few minutes ago in Mississippi governor reads announced that there would be I think twenty percent capacity that's not the big news. The big news is no tailgating. The I know that doesn't affect you as a coach, but it does affect the fans does it not? Yeah it does but you know it is what it is and You know good decision you know based off of social distancing issues in the spread. So a lot of decisions are being made like that that you know people aren't happy with, but you know people really for the most part following protocol with Corona and everyone's talking about the students. But you know I drive through downtown. I, see pictures on the Internet you know most aren't falling either so that makes it really difficult to open up the grow. Yeah I it is a big deal but know Miss Missile one season coach I on on the the more important issues of football team back we talked to you some time ago and that was before voluntary workout had had commenced how how's it feel now and what are you seeing and sensing? From your football team. What are excited to be back? We've had three practices and you know. They're always excited this time of year, but you know to have it taken away from them from Spring and then potentially not playing all at one point You can see how excited they are to be around, and so like I've said before challenges not motivating them, they're plenty motivated the challenges them having disciplined away from here. So we can stop the spread because really at the end of the day, everybody wants to lift weights. Every wants to practice run sprints and learn offense defense but. Probably the teams are win. The most games are the ones that have the least players out for the Games because of Cronin 'cause they manages well. Yeah in on that front What are you doing I mean I realize the season's five weeks away but will there be a set of protocols and precautions not not the normal safety but just to make sure that your own units don't infect each other and you're you're left going playing Alabama at home or another key game without. Critical people I know you can't avoid it, but you can also try to keep them separated to some degree or can you? Yeah, we can. You know I'm not worried about when they're here I, mean we we've got you know team meetings that we have out in indoor facility. You know with everybody spaced out and their instead of the team room you know we split our special teams means you know so we never have everybody together and so I'm not worried when they're here. You know they do a good job and we make them. You know it's it's when they're away from here and then they go into an environment of the college environment and they look around and no one's doing it. So you know it's it's difficult for a young kid. Either looted do it a couple times and I realized there's only so much coach can say but how? What means are you employing to try to drill that into their head or do they already know it and you just have to let them do whatever they they think is right. Now I mean when we talk about it all the time, Paul and you know the biggest point them. You may not feel like you matter because you're redshirt your fourteen. But you don't you don't do this right you know and you you can infect to starter. So. Or senior that you know loses part of their season or towards loses the end of their senior year. So you know it's really a big challenge. Have you sought at all because we always when we get the schedules which we did the other night you you tend to look at, Road Games home games and man this school has an advantage here or there but nobody really knows do they when you go when you go on the road and there's fifteen sixteen, seventeen, thousand people, it's not going to be the same road environment and I know you won't know until you get there but I'm just curious if someone who is coach at a lot of different places and a lot of really tough environments, what are your thoughts? Well, it's GonNa be completely different. You know definitely won't need silent count that's for sure so. We'll be in Tiger stadium into the season and you know we'll be able to to. To yell the audibles to the quarterback on the five yard line. So you know it it'll be very different I think kind of almost be eerie as you play you know for the players you know like. Lap for the SEC this would be less than a spring game. You know attendance so. it'll be very strange.

Lane Kiffin wants NCAA to allow Big Ten, Pac-12 players to transfer after canceled seasons
"Lane Kiffin, our old friend Lane Kiffin Oh last last story for here on what you need to know before we get to cow Kouzmin his comments today in the media scrum. He says the Big Ted in the PAC twelve players since they're not gonNA play should be allowed to transfer. I won't. Lane. kiffin thinks that L Z GRANDERSON Sorry response. But what do we expect from him? Right? He's an overgrown child and he says childish things and sometimes they're funny sometimes it's. Downright hilarious actually, but you shouldn't be trolling conferences trying to protect children. because. These are still young man. These are still kids. This isn't a pros, the one, thousand, nine, hundred, twenty, one, year, old. I have a twenty three year old in the house right now and let me tell you. He's not a grown as man yet. So I appreciate having a having a, you know a wicked sense of humor but this isn't something you WanNa troll about this is something that we all need to be taken seriously and not just people play

SEC to play 10-game, conference-only football schedule in 2020
"The SEC, making it official, they will begin the season on September twenty six they will play in conference games every school will likely add. Their next to rotation school. So let's We can take a look at what that means. In terms of everyone's opponent. Alabama will add I. Believe. This is correct. Again, this is not a well, let me check the official announcement and may be in there but they they will add Florida and Vanderbilt. Okay It is not in their correct. Okay. This this is speculation. Let me make it clear. This is not the. But we're speculating Alabama will add game at Florida and Vanderbilt Arkansas at. And a trip to South Carolina Auburn will home game against South Carolina, road game at Mizzou, Lsu, UK, and Tennessee Mississippi State Vanderbilt in. Uga. Tentative Ole Miss Tennessee in UK. Missouri and Florida. On the other side Florida adding Alabama and am, will you talk about some major till two if we get that for Arkansas and Mississippi State on Georgia's schedule? That's a significant break Kentucky. LSU and Mississippi. Missouri an Auburn. South. Carolina Auburn in Arkansas Tennessee, Mississippi state and Lsu and excuse me. Mississippi. And LSU and. Much. Sure. That game is I think that game could be a Knoxville lane kiffin in. KNOXVILLE. Again as a head co as first time as a head coach and other than Tennessee and Tennessee Lsu and. Vanderbilt Mississippi State Alabama. So again, the official announcement is out, we will talk to the commissioner in a few minutes. This. I'll just read you the commissioner's comments, and again, we will talk to him shortly after careful consideration of the public health indicators in our region. Following advice of our medical advisers we have determined that this is the best course of

Kiffin, Leach lobby for change to Mississippi flag
"Lane Kiffin and Mike Leach. Come together. No rival football coaches coming together while they were part of a contingent from Mississippi State, addressing the state legislature Thursday lobbying for the confederate emblem to be removed from the Mississippi State flag quote. We removed flag from our campus five years ago. We've made it clear that it doesn't represent who we are all missed. Today's another big step in doing our part to move the state forward and ensure a more welcoming environment for everyone. This is extremely important to me. Me into our players time for change. That's lane. kiffin speaking. Don't forget. Mississippi state running back island. Hill tweeted earlier this week that he would not be representing the state anymore until the flag is

ESPN Daily
The Legend of Coach O
"Why this much emotion coach such a big game? They beat US eight years. I got tired of your no so I mean it was time I told the team tonight. We taught allied. If you follow college football you probably know that voice. He belongs to a guy who's loud road tough in might be more suited for his job than anyone in America. LSU head coach at Oberlin today ahead of Monday's national championship game against Clemson. We tell the story of a man who seems like he was built in a lab to coach football in Louisiana and why despite that. It's actually surprising that he ended up there at all times. It's Friday January tenth this is espn daily presented by Dell Small Business David. How's it going is going quite it will mean a thank you for having me David Hale writes about college football for ESPN so your story is about coach? Ed Osea Ron really the legend coach. But I want to start by talking to you about perhaps his most noteworthy characteristic which is of course his boy to get to where you wanna go see like you have to go undefeated you have to beat Alabama you have to keep on going and then you have to win Sec Championship then you got football playoff oilfield so if you start thinking about my favorite thing in the World David is being in a room and watching someone here at for the first time because because it really never fails to shock. Anyone who's hearing we knew was going to win that game. Today we started Monday. NO-GO windows gape go. Don't you want to write his autobiography. Just so he can also do the voice over work. What's on the menu at the odor on household today? What are we got cocoa? My mom made a special gumbel but it was on. We'd better win the game. It would just be so wonderful. One of his first jobs was at Arkansas. As assistant strength coach the players there thought he was pranking them they. They didn't think that anyone actually talks that way. And they couldn't make heads or tails of what he was saying. Either it was. He's just he would get excited and start saying things with this gravelly Cajun accent and then he pointing the direction and they would just go do whatever was in that direction because they had no idea what he he was saying but he was saying it loud enough that they were afraid of him and it was only after like he'd been on the job for a month or two that they were like. Well I you know he's kept us up a long time. I guess that is his voice. We love the voice. Everyone does now but it at times says constant now. Yeah he's coached in some places that are not Louisiana. Yeah everybody talks about how he is Phyllis you but he was in Miami he was in Syracuse. He was in USC and and his last stint in USC he came on to replace place Lane Kiffin as the interim coach there had some success at USC. And I think there were folks there who would have loved to have given him the fulltime job because he had that success. But there were also folks Has Been reported by numerous folks I think including Bruce Feldman that the voice was one of the reasons you couldn't hire him as US's sees coach because you're the voice of the program. You're the face of the program you're the identity of the program and that's not USC right that's not La. Look at how he talks. He's not the model of USC so we can't hire them and there's a lot of folks at USC or probably kicking themselves for that exact thought process now. Well the voice is a perfect fit for Lsu else you I mean just about everything about co is a perfect fit for Lsu. It's almost like if you reverse engineered a coach based on Louisiana Anna Football. It would look sound and act like him and he's got roots right. In the state of Louisiana. He is from the Food Perish. It's bio country. Outside of New Orleans. His Dad grew bon shrimp boats ways just every bit the sort of central casting version of what we think of as Louisiana. You know if you've watched waterboy you kind of have a rough idea of what I think it owes runs. Background is one of the great anecdotes that his mom gave me. Okay so he was in second grade and broke his leg and the doctor fitted him for a cast. It went from foot all the way up to the upper thigh and he picked up some trudges out there and play football on crutches and about every week or so she would have to drag him back into the doctor's office to get fitted for a new cast because he would get it so dirty and muddy and mucked up from playing football in a full leg. CAST I'm sorry they let a second grader. Played football. I don't know that even let is the proper word there so much as he just went and did it So he kept playing in high school then college got to high school and he was a full grown man from day one one and he was a big guy and went to college as a defensive. LINEMAN ended up at Lsu for a year and hated it because for the first time in his life football ball was hard he was not having immediate success. He was not playing routinely He was being forced to go to classes. He wasn't super eager to go to and and he left. Lsu went back home and thought maybe that's the end of college football. And I'll go get a real by job like my dad and I'll go work on a shrimp boat and turns out. You may be surprised to learn that working on a shrimp boat is much less fun than in football And so I think that was you know when you talk to his mom that summer after he left. Lsu went back home to work. Real jobs was was a lot of ways sort of a turning point for coach. Oh and that he got a taste of what life is like when everything is not being handed to you to. How did he end back in football? He decided he needed to go play football again which meant he had to go back to college which was not really his favorite thing but he decided to go to northwest Louisiana State. That's where he finished his career and then went looking for football coaching jobs and the first job he could find was as a strength coach and soccer. Yeah shocker this. Like three hundred pound beast of a man finds a strength coaching job. And the job. Java's with Arkansas. Ken Hatfield to coach the time Ed walks in. And he's this beast of a man and he's got that voice and he's so excited and he's like I don't know if he can do this job but he sure looks the Bart's so we're going to hire them and tell you ended up getting into coaching. He worked at Arkansas for a little while and I think he really wanted to to do something. More than being the strength coach the ends up landing miraculously enough at the absolute heart of college football in the nineteen eighty s and early nineteen ninety S. Which is at the University of Miami? They celebrate a Miami the Hurricanes Complain and the coaching on the same staff. Tommytucker Ville tougher telling me they were. They went down to Key West on vacation. You want one year and they're in like this Nice restaurant having dinner and get the talking about football technique and overrun so excited about it. He likes slides tables out of the way and gets down the three point stance and he's trying to explain technique to to top Ville and he's like pushing tables and chairs out of the way and like diners are just looking over gawking. At what the heck is is this man doing your. But that's just sort of the approach that he brought and I think his time at Miami really offered him an opportunity to prove that ed behind that bluster and the Raspy gravelly cage invoice that there is a guy who really knows a heck of a lot about football. How did it go for him? In Miami off the field not great. He was someone who went out a lot. Drank drank a lot and the things that you could get away with when you're twenty northwestern Louisiana you don't get away with as a coach on the staff of one of the premier programs grams in college football. And so you know the story that really I think ended up up ending his career involved him being a bar. T was thrown out of the bar for being too intoxicated and he was not happy with that and ended up getting into a fight and legal proceedings. Happened in that essentially was the end of his time in Miami but I think it was also sort of a wakeup call for him so when he gets away from football ball it was a lot of ways probably very much like when he went back to work the shrimp boats after leaving. LSU Is that he kind of realized. This isn't the life that I want. This isn't who I WANNA be. I don't think that he shies away from those. Oh stories now. He's still shares them with current players in in the way of trying to relate to them and going through it and a lot of ways has probably been in what pushed him to turn things around and become the person that he is.

OU Football: Lane Kiffin may be flying coach these days, but he still has first-class goals at Florida Atlantic
"Because this week At this very moment me in Can I don't even know if I'm allowed to say I'm going to be hosting next week because, it's not going. To be you. But we'll get we'll get there I will have a new famed co host here for best week ever and we will be discussing. Everything that happened on college football what is one? Thing? That we will be saying Dari what's the one thing that you'll be saying right now as you're listening to this show driving around doing your. Errands on, Sunday morning, next week one thing one thing one thing that you know. That you're like this. Happened yesterday I can't believe it what? Do we know next week already the pressure will mount immediately Jim harbaugh And. I don't I'm not on this. Michigan Mellon I yesterday show gave our playoff teams and I shared with, my well he, had Michigan As one. A his, and he had Washington is one. Of his he may be in trouble after next week frankly but he's on the Michigan wagon I've said I've said a, couple of times. Jim Harbaugh could be the national. Coach of the year or Jim Harbaugh could be fired at the end, of the year Feels like a year right and I think they're going. To go down there and I like shape. Patterson I'm really curious to see but that is an offense, that was, atrocious last year absolutely atrocious if they have trouble scoring I. Don't think Notre Dame necessarily Notre Dame will to Michigan's defense is really good but. You're going to put them at night in south bend

Back in the college game, Chip Kelly focused on winning at UCLA
"Chip Kelly was gone to the different chip Kelly. When he left college. Football is at the top of his game, maybe not a national championship, but he built in Oregon program that was. At best good into a program that was excellent. And the second he likes citing top and very innovative. And then once he left and then Marcus mariota stay for another year for Markelle Fultz another couple years, whatever it was that whole organ thing, just kind of fizzled and they're, they're good. Again. They're not great. They're not, but good unions, the great Younis great facilities on he's a UCLA now piece in ESPN dot com. Talking about him and his approach, and it'll be interesting to see how it goes because I don't think anybody really cares how peculiar he is long as their winning games, but you can only be peculiar if you are winning and he doesn't really go for anything that isn't the film isn't really the players isn't really the game and college football. You have to have a little glad-handing go along with this unless you're just even Nick Sabin glad-handing little bit. I mean, that's one of the issues that lane kiffin had for years is he. I wasn't great around the people that he needed to be great. You know the the raw raw stuff lie the glad-handing, the the important handshakes that you need to make. That's not one lane kiffin does. May I always find it ironic that people would talk about how great he was as a recruiter, which means you're great in a room. I'm willing to believe it, but that also means you're only good in a room with very specific people like once their age extends beyond nineteen, right? You apparently have no social skills and chip Kelly is one of these guys that just seems like he has. He's he's almost like a football Rainman. Yeah, you know what I mean? Like he, he just he's one of these guys. That's a football savant. And in his lane, he's a genius. But if he's six inches outside of either side of the lane, he's just painfully uncomfortable. Yeah, I, I've told the story before when I was living in Houston and working there, they have the Lombardi awards where they bring in people, and there's a coach of your word, and there was a panel of all these guys and they. I mean, Mike Sherman was head coach. Texas a. and m. at the time, Bobby Bowden was there. There was one or two other guys in chip Kelly was there as well. Kevin, someone was there who's at Houston at the time. And all these guys get up and and do a ten minute speech on their program, and they're all great. They're captivating. They'll be room is laughing. Everybody's listening. They're good with their timing on the jokes. They're good with telling the stories, boom, boom, phone, like a comedian. That's got a really tight little said ten minutes in. They're often everybody's throat. And then chip Kelly comes up and it's like things everybody coming out and went and sat back down. Again. It was like, we will. What they lights come on this big banquet room and people start moving towards the coaches. Thanks, autographs, and all this kind of stuff. And Kelly practically ran for the exit and it's like, wow, he must be on this whole time. I thinking you don't good of a football coach. You have to be to to have that be your deal and still people are lining up to give you millions of dollars goat your
