A similar warning went out to shippers earlier this year ahead of Iran seizing two tankers travelling near the strait. I'm Karen Chalmers. "Doing this particular maneuver another with the city says that again. They're complicated rules. You gotta read fine print but the city claims that under arup guidelines. They're allowed to use the money for lost revenue. That's that's a key thing that we've talked about before especially in the corona virus crisis How certain federal funds needs to be used only on your costs related to the pandemic. So if you had to spend more on your health department then you can cover that now. This allowed a you know. According to the city allows you to cover lost revenue so for norlin for example. The corona virus holded tourism. So we haven't had as much sales taxes so we're missing all this money and again the city says that we're allowed to use this money on lost revenue. Which again is why. I'm saying that even after the fire department all these subsequent expenditures seem to be eligible under guidelines. Because again it's all just related to lost revenue. Deputy would have happened in normal year. Who set to gain the most from from this money so there are so. I think it'll pd on is the single largest department You know again. Most of the cost in here are for for salaries for personnel costs. So you're seeing a lot of raises in their. You know money for new software things like that. I would go through the whole list. I think that the whole list is about twenty three different departments and agencies. But you know you definitely see a lot of money going to the criminal justice system. Not just the police. A little over seven million dollars for the The sheriff's office on you have money going to municipal court criminal district court. You have more money. Go to the public defenders as well. I'm the district attorney in another area of focus. Here is the office of the business. External services This was in office that was created by the cantrell administration last year basically encompasses the department of safety permits code enforcement the historic district landmark commission. So so you know a lot of the departments that deal with things like terminating in regulation so on there's also a lot of money that went into again. Those offices like carbon safety permits and so forth but For the most part again it it sounds like you know a lot of department leaders came in and basically what they said is we've been operating on this shoestring budget. We haven't had enough employees to do the job we need to. This is just gonna bring us back to an adequate level. I'm so again. We're not looking at a lot of new initiatives a lot of new stuff here. It's really just bring us back to where we should've been without huge revenue loss from and does the committee to revisit this and also approve it before it advances. They punted on it. Does it have to go back. Technically a committee vote is a required. It's it's typical. Typically you'll see a committee vote for something before it goes to the full council in this case. I'm because of those number inconsistencies. We talked about earlier on the council. Said it wasn't you know a council wound who is currently chairing the budget committee. The absence of jared rossett who was recently arrested on a dui charge basically. She said that wasn't enough information for them to vote today but we can skip the committee. Vote and we'll just bring this to the full council on the administration stressing that there's kind of a time constraint here. They're claiming that they have know serious cash flow issues. They have to get this money moving to keep payroll gonna keep paying vendors. You know to to keep things moving. So i i think that the administration is urging speeds here. Today is thursday morning. it's the day of the city council. Meeting is it up today. As far as you know as far as i know it is not. It was indicated on the agenda earlier this week that it was going to be deferred on on the agenda highlight stated sending out on which you would expect to if they were going to consider today ob so my guess is that it's not going to happen today but we'll see everyone wants a little piece of this money. Obviously you talked about the district attorney's office. What does the specifically want again. A lot of their stuff is is payroll related raises and so forth. You know what one other detail that we pulled out obviously bend reporting on on surveillance capabilities for a while but the city is planned to use a million dollars of this money to buy you know somewhere. One hundred fifty to one hundred sixty new license plate readers You know as far as we know the current length number of license plate readers loans eighty nine so this more than doubles by long shot So that's one of the is that they're also the department of sanitation is also using this money to buy twenty new prime cameras four to catch illegal dumping which is something that city has been doing a couple years. So yes some surveillance cost in that. Seventy seven million for sure and new orleans is one of the more highly surveilled cities already in the country. And you just wrapped up a long series. That is just launching this week on surveillance. Can you tell us about that. It's project called neighborhoods watched on we've been working on it for about a year and a half and you know it's a five part series that that really tries to for lack of a better phrase really set out the rules of the game you know. Try and lay out the players. How the surveillance system works. I'm who regulates it in. You know what's kinda going on in that scene. It's pretty lengthy. There's a lot of detail in there again. It's the culmination of years of reporting on the system. But yeah a five part series at surveillance dot the lens nola dot or would highly encourage everyone to check it out and there's a link just on the homepage right. Yep yep okay. We'll between and everything like that should be easy to find cool. Thanks michael nick. Recently we had a long discussion with you and jeremy young about the case of brandon jackson. This was a story that the lends covered in partnership with aljazeera. Can you tell everyone what's happening now. On that case and why it's important. Yes so brandon. Jackson is one of around fifteen hundred people still in prison in louisiana nanyang animus jury conviction so this is a law that was on the books in louisiana for over a century until it was repealed by voters in two thousand eighteen and just last year was ruled unconstitutional by the united states. Supreme court But in a subsequent ruling the united states river ruled. That people like brandon. Who are who have been imprisoned for years on this verdicts shouldn't get a new trial regardless a state court system still could grant them new. Trials and so brandon has a hearing this week in boulder city. Where he was on bosia perished where he was convicted. Where a judge will decide whether or not to grant a new trial based on the fact that his his conviction on animus this is one of you know hundreds of of similar cases playing out across the state right now. So it's really you know brand is not the only one going through this. So we'll see what happens. And whatever happens they will be the final word on on it but but it will.
