AI Tries to Save the Whales

"We head to the Pacific northwest to understand the obstacles that confront these endangered orcas and how researchers are using artificial intelligence to help orcas and humans to coexist. WHAT HAPPENED TO J thirty five or Tala wasn't an anomaly the southern resident cavs have been struggling to survive for some time they've been listed as endangered in both the US and Canada since the mid arts. But their numbers continue to fall in two, thousand five there were eight. Now there are just seventy two in the wild one lives in captivity. Their home waters in the sailor, see an elaborate network of channels that span the coasts of Seattle Vancouver from Olympia Washington in the south to the middle of Vancouver Island British Columbia in the north. The see encompasses puget sound the Strait of Georgia and the Strait of Juan De. FUCA. Much of it is rich in natural beauty and teeming with wildlife with rural shorelines backlit by tall evergreens and craggy. Hills. It's a magnet for nature lovers who crave inactive lifestyle, but the Pacific northwest has been getting crowded these paths few decades with people competing for space with the local wildlife as of two thousand twenty. Washington's population was nearly eight million and Vancouver's topped out at about two and a half million and is projected to grow. It's become a busy place. So you see things like Bald Eagles nesting next to satellite dishes in busy parking lots. Big. Ravens Beg for food next to cold press coffeeshops commuters hop on ferry boats here like people in other towns take the train or the car. On these trips they can sometimes spot the southern resident orcas milling about but a lot of the time the orchestra framed by ferry boats or container ships. The area's ports are growing along with the population. In twenty eighteen Porta Vancouver ship activity reached a record high and the port is undergoing numerous expansions. Increased. Commercial ship traffic on top of recreational boat activity is one of the biggest threats facing the whales that live here. This traffic causes numerous problems ships pollute the water, and they're loud under the waves. As we're about to find out the ocean is getting crowded and noisy, and it's negatively impacting the whales. Dr Lance Barrett Lennard is the director of the Marine Mammal Research Program at the Vancouver Aquarium. There's also a lot of heavy vessel traffic that comes in some of the going to the port of Vancouver some of the going to the port of Seattle unfortunately both both major west coast ports. have their roots running through. Southern Resident Critical Habitat. But the obvious problem he says is that more boats increase the chances that Wales will get hit. especially, if the boats are going fast. Whale is far less likely to be hit by ship that's running slow, and if it's running less than ten knots, a good chance to survive even if it is hit, that's just the facts. So regulators started issuing slowdown directives, it few areas these slowdowns are mandatory, but in the Pacific northwest or the orcas live, they remain mostly voluntary. Mariner say they want to avoid the ORCAS but there are business conflicts John? Berg. Is With Pacific, Merchant Shipping Association a Trade Group that represents about thirty shipping lines that do business along the Pacific coast. For a lot of ships. Schedule Integrity. Is. Paramount. and. So they need to be at a certain port at a certain day in a certain time. And so planning is essential especially since coming in late can mean higher fees and lost revenue. Mariners go back and forth about how quiet ships they talk about things like reducing noise by finding optimum speed or by retrofitting or upgrading vessels with more efficient quieter parts. They even say that in some cases slower vessels. Moore of Iraq. Now to researchers, this is a settled question, the faster ship the louder the ship. And it's the noise that is even more detrimental to the ORCAS than ship. Strikes. The underwater cacophony is mostly generated by ship's propeller. It releases vapor filled bubbles. ORCAS like all CETACEANS rely on echo location to communicate, made and find food. For ORCAS, it's how they find salmon as the ORCAS chase salmon they make clicking sounds that they send out into the ocean. The click then bounces off of the salmon and creates an echo, and that's how they know where the salmon are underwater noise pollution specialist. Dr Lindy Wildcard is an adjunct research associate at Dalhousie University in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. CETACEANS are particularly vocal of the US sounds to find their prey actively using bio sonar. And the various noise sources that humans put into the ocean can affect. Wales and that they are masked, that is the sounds of interests are obliterated by by US adding this sort of acoustics smog of of noise so they can't hear as well. You can actually hear the masking that wildcard is talking about listen to this underwater recording of northern resident orcas who have different dialects from their neighbors, the southern resident or is this recording was provided by Orca lab a nonprofit research center based on Hanson Island near British. Columbia. Canada. Those. SQUEALS ARE ORCA calls. Here's what happens if you overlay their calls with recording of the ship underwater. It drowns out the ORCAS squeals. All you hear is ship noise. That's because the sound created by the ship is at the same high frequency ranges the ORCAS. It's kind of like being at a dinner party where people are talking over each other. But for the ORCAS, the increased sound means they'll lose their seat at the table. If the ORCAS can't hear themselves they can't hear the seminar and so they can't find food. And that can have far reaching impacts that affect the entire population. Their stress hormones can increase. with, noise with the seismic Airgun sounds they also reduce their vocalisations to the point of sometimes falling outright silent, which means they can't communicate with each other and that probably affects mating. If mayors could know where the ORCAS are. They could try to avoid that part of the ocean or at least slow down. So their engine noise doesn't drown the ORCAS OUT Ideally. They'd only have to go slow when the orcas were in the area, but it can be hard for ship captains to confirm where the whales are in fog rain or even under normal circumstances ship captains can't always see them they often miss them. So some conservationists along with the Canadian government installed underwater hydrophones in the Salish Sea along the coast of British Columbia near known ORCA HABITAT, they wanted to be able to track the ORCAS through their echo location calls. But remember how it works. Sound was drowned out by the ship's well, it's not just hard for the orchestra here. It's hard for the humans to. It can take people a long time to listen to all those recordings figuring out what is well sound, and what is this ship fish or other marine life sounds the orcas make noise at all hours of the day and night, and all of that sound even that record overnight has to be listened to by someone. Up. Next. How artificial intelligence can help speed this process up? And maybe find a solution for both the ships and the whales.

Trevor Lawrence sparks united #WeWantToPlay movement, players association goal as 2020 season hangs in balance

"Let me ask you. You've seen this trending some of the biggest players in college football. Justin Fields, Trevor Laurence. We want to play. We saw Trey Lance at NDS you their quarterback who's going to probably be a top 10 pick. He wants to play. What do you think about the players and certain programs coming out saying Let us play, But yet here we're gonna have the conference is probably cancel it. I'll start with the players. I have a ton of respect for Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields in trail and to be honest for guys to speak out, because those guys probably more so than anyone. That plant on playing college football in 2020. They have the most to lose, right. I mean, I would say they're probably all top 10 picks. I haven't seen anything on Justin feels lately, but I know he's talented as they come. Trevor Laurence and obviously Trey Lance, but You look at those guys to speak out and use their platform for their fellow college athletes. I have a ton of respect for that, but at the same time I don't really agree with them because for two reasons, the 1st 1 being They obviously want to play the same way that I have friends that wanted to have their wedding this summer. I have you know people that want to go on trips and people that want to go visit their parents without fear of Dean, asymptomatic carrier and passing covert along to them, so people want to do a lot of things. That doesn't mean we should or that doesn't mean that we Are allowed to right now because during a global pandemic times are just different. Like I want to hop on a plane and go visit friends. But guess what? I cannot do that right now. At least I should not be doing that right now because it's in the best interest. Or of the general health of myself in the population and those around me, So we're making those sacrifices in college football is not immune to to those things, and at the same time if you're a college athlete I feel like if I was a charge of the College Football Players committee, not that they have one of those, but they had a union or something. I would have waited until the conference schedules said Hey, do you know what we are going to play football this year? And then I would use that as leverage to Seo so are being treated differently than normal students who are all at home doing virtual learning. I feel as if we should be compensated for this. And if they were gonna pay, they should be paid to play because they're essential employees now at this point, right? You have normal student at home taking classes on mine, but you're going to ask the players. To travel to pay rent to live on campus and then you know, go risk their health and their livelihood on the field. That's what in central employees, in fact is, so I don't know. I understand the competitive desire. I feel like I would probably have the same mentality. A 20 Thinking you can't touch me. I want to play college football is my senior year. But at the end of the day, I want to do a lot of things. But much smarter People tell me I shouldn't do those things.

"APP for the kids. To where they can log into their half, and you see their active. and. They're actively watching the game. They're checked and maybe your percentage to our ten percent of. You know everybody to twenty percent for KS eighty percent for your business. And then that kid wins the foul fall in what you could also do. Ten Kids my South Ball. They could have Indiana where they submit their videos. Still saying hey. My son, for instance go. Hey, my name's Eli. I like. Joey votto foul ball, maybe pretty cool I like that because what we're doing years. The reason I thought of this to begin with I just watched the ball just kinda trickled down the stands over the weekend with nobody there and I thought man that experience will be missed this year. And then I said so we we gotta be able to do something to tie in the reds with kids and raising money for the reds community, Fund and I just think. Is You know in? In a typical real in a typical game, the reds, you're never going to get that ball back with fans in the San Suu in this case, take advantage of the fact all those foul balls will come back to you. Hand them out in some way shape or form you put smiles on. Kids faces, and in some parts of it. Raise money for your community. I think everybody would be happy. Apples and I I. Love You I love your angle of the APP and tying in with a connecting to the game, watching the game listening to the game, and if you're doing that, we're going to reward you with an opportunity for a foul ball from that game. You are watching. That's a win. Win Getting kids watching baseball absolutely, and you can have a banners on on top of the screen for your safety I'd say bike from so and so just want us out ball, and then right before you cut to a commercial, you can have a video of child thing. there. I I like it Matthew. My thought it'd be cool if it went if they do something for all of them. That'll be to where you could actively have something forever. Yes, a network connection between kids and the game. Absolutely. Yeah, thanks, Matthew I mean he makes a great point. I mean they should be league wide thing because every ballpark is going to have how many somebody look up the average number of foul balls hitting the game into the stands that now we're going back to the teams. Turned into something I. Don't WanNa. Say profitable. Yeah, turn it into something profitable in terms of growing young fans Finley. We go John Welcome to sports talk. Day Lance how you doing good. What do you think about Paul O'Neil? Hall of fame for the reds are not. That's a that's A. that's such an interesting topic. Because there'e right off the top you think about all, said well. Yeah, why not, but then you back and He really didn't do that much with them. He had like you said he was okay with the Reds I. Think even by a good chunk of his career. He was kind of a platoon guy. Yeah, yeah, for the reds and yeah, he. He did pretty much everything actor after his days in in Cincinnati Fars on the major league level. Him. He hadn't tapped into things while he was here. It clicked for him once he left and Kudos to him I just don't think hall of Famer for a franchise. It never really kicked into gear for Ya. Absolutely and and obviously like you said with him a kick from right field. Remember him that and you know the guy that I kinda I kinda run a little bit parallel to him. Although all had a lot better career with the reds in this guy did was member Edwin Encarnacion yes. Yes. He was with the reds. It was like we couldn't get rid of him fast enough and actually the Blue Jays I. Think released him. Then when he got when he went back to them, it's like the light switch went often that guy. What's he have like three or four hundred career home runs him over four hundred. Not He had a phenomenal career after. Cincinnati, but like. His is number. Block better, but yeah. And then just one quick quick. It's art for me. It's hard for me to believe that that blue. Open. John I lost you we'll. We'll pick up the blue jays thing tomorrow night, but you were in and out of that I lost. We'll head down the stretch. Squeeze in on this date and our things up on. Sports, presented by Kill C.. "Blue jays pirate stories kind of wild. Get your calls here in just a second. The bluejays are trying to find a ballpark to play. Because candidate government barred them from playing their home stadium amid the coronavirus pandemic, the quote from an official said Canada has been able to flatten the curve in large part because of the sacrifices, Canadians made we. We understand professional sports were important to the economy and to Canadians at the same time our government will continue to take decisions at the border on the basis of the advice of our health experts in order to protect the health and safety of all Canadians, so the Blue Jays can't play at their home stadium. Travel out and come back and teams can't travel in and then leave, so they need to stadium season starts on Friday. They've considered their training facility in Dunedin Florida, which is like the best of spots to be heading right now based on. The that's a hotspot. They've considered Buffalo. A Minor League ballpark. which is there AAA home, but it's kind of a sub standard that the lights. The lighting structures aren't great. The club houses aren't really big enough and conducive to social distancing. Weight Room batting. Cages Kinda Sub-standard I. It's just in Major, League. Baseball is worried about the competitive this advantage they they already are going to be at not being able to play home. Do they want to have them in a place where the the setup is not? Up to major league standards or enough now give their general manager credited their President Mark Shapiro, and their players have come out and said all the right things to this point. You know we're. We're going to make this work. Wherever we wind up. The pirates jumped in today and said we will host you at PNC park. Now. That's great. I on the surface, the pirates aren't away all the time I mean there. There's going to be I think there were seven days where they both would play at PNC based on their home schedules, so I don't know if that would be a a noon. Blue Jays game followed by seven o'clock pirates, game or something like that, but you'd have to work that out, but there's only the thirty. There's only seven of them that would be a crossover that both play on the same day, but think about this. The season starts on Friday and there are thirty Toronto Blue Jay players who are going to have to figure out where they are going to live starting on Friday for the next sixty six days. Whether, it's themselves whether it's their wife whether it's their wife and kids and the their stuff, their stuff has to get from where they are in Toronto to some other place. That's either in a permanent a condo home the renting. That's by frighten out of the not the end of next month. That's on Friday. They need a place to play and donate a place to live. and. That has not been figured out at this point, but how about the Toronto Blue Jays playing in Pittsburgh at PNC park in and around the pirates schedule all right back to the phones about cell phone and we go. Michael Welcome to sportstalk. Loria what do you make of all this? Year. The Canadian for could've give the bluejays a little bit more heads up on that. Yeah I the Blue Jays. We're waiting thinking like a last minute reprieve and the conditions would be better, but that has not happened. So, what do you think about this foul ball idea? I will see your sellable and I will raise one yeah. Okay. Do you remember and I don't know thread. Still do the throughout, but you remember the like the skyline step of the Mike thing to do you have a kid at the start of the inning would announced. Who's The leadoff batter? Yeah. Okay. Why not have like like literally guys? That during any and then fell about all. They get that by ball. will be I mean the kids can't be in the perks how they're going to make the announcement Berko Berkeley. I see what you're saying. We could, even in theory have them record? You can have a bunch of them. Already in storage like different players doing each kid gets a different name I. See that yeah, you could, you could punch that up on the scoreboard, and it could be Johnny from Madeira, who now batting for the Cincinnati reds, the first Baseman Joey Votto, or you could even have his team literally team standing behind the kid cheering once he announces his name. I mean that's what I was thinking. What you maybe prerecord, yeah? ooh, bad yeah. To wear, the kid would say now. Betty the first baseman. Rod and then real quick on the Pollen Neil saying yeah, I think Neil more of as a Yankee red. Yeah. I agree with you. I think his and again. He wasn't I'm certainly not saying. He was bad as he was, he was. Decent to good as a red. He was great as a Yankee and I. Just I think as a Yankee Hall of Famer so? On your empty animosity between him and there is the way he was treated by giving Boden and the trade. Maybe may maybe there's probably a couple of layers to all of that. Michael I gotta run. Thanks, Buddy. Good here, no good hearing from me, Matthews Sale and now he's on seven hundred wwl W, A. Good how are you? Hey now to. This piggybacking off of your idea basically but. Masa is, makes this poor hands on for the kids and yeah. Basically you have your idea where you can still bid on the foul balls, okay? But with how kids are today? Electric I'm thinking..

"One more from a Reggie. We kind of have a theme tonight. We've heard from Chris Welch who joins US IT START KIRK. Sally heard from Tucker Bernard from Nate Jones one more, and I heard this the other night driving home from Trevor Bauer when he joined the guys on MLB radio, talking about and we. We've referenced this before. The good staffs, the feed off of each other. And I'm not saying the reds staff is the brave staff of the ninety when I make this analogy, but the the braves have said over the years that Galvin's Maddox smoltz guys like that they the competition they fed off of it, and it raised their game from one start to the next. There's also the added element in this case with the reds of the makeup. The stuff on this starting rotation listen to what trevor. Bauer told the guys from MLB radio the other night about the competition and about the differences within that pitching rotation. I if you'd office obviously the competition on the field watching a guy, go out there and punch out ten and seven shutout like Oh man. Like stepped my game up I got you know I gotTa do better? That's everyone feels that way. You know so the the competition on the field drive each other, and then when you're sitting in the dugout and you're talking about okay. What did you see with them last night? And you're allowed. You approach it, and we'll have such different approaches. Right I mean Sonny is very heavily. Breaking ball like that sinker, comebacker and stuff like that Casteel is very heavily like a sinker and a change at. I'm almost exclusively for Siem and curveball and breaking balls, so we'll all different approaches. And we can Kinda, learn. CAST is like this guy. You know when I saw this in swing. Through a change happens like okay well. I can use that because I got a changeup. It's not nearly as good as yours, but I put that in back of my mind, so so we can bounce stuff off each other and then. Wade Majlis been around and seen a lot as well and you got the finding there as well who I mean. We all have our unique ways of going about approaching it, but we all have our very distinct strengths, and those are things that can pass back and forth to each other, and that's even starting to talk about the bullpen and what they see on the town. We got down there. I like that that's good stuff from from Trevor Bauer by the way on a starting pitching level down below. I don't I. Don't know what to make of this. Nothing has come out of it today, but last night. Hundred Green tweeted and posted on instagram. A locator at said Cincinnati Ohio And he tweeted in all capital letters. Let's go. Leading to rapid speculation about what that meant, the obvious instant reaction is wait a minute. He coming. Is he coming to town or they adding him to the player pool? Now what I find it intriguing that stayed up for a couple of hours and then was removed. Here's here's what I could see happening. The reds have would dietrich now asking for and receiving his release, they still have three openings on their sixty man player pool. I could see the reds announcing. They've added hundred green to the pool and he'll. Go and I could see the reds also say you know. What are you doing? You're killing his here. You can't. You can't release transactions before we make transactions because there might be other moving pieces and parts to all this I could see that scenario I don't know. I could see this area where somebody says hey, take that down because a something might happen, so maybe he's taking it down. But what would it surprise me if they added him to Pasco No? Hundred Green missed all of last season because of the Tommy John Surgery. He setting up to miss another season because there's no minor league season. And keep in mind. The last time he pitched was twenty eighteen in through sixty eight innings that year we talked about this last week. His his senior year in high school. They kid gloves him and let him only make five appearances. Then the reds drafted him. They sent him to billings. He pitched four and a third innings in billings when he was seventeen then in two thousand. Thousand Eighteen pitches at Dayton. He made eighteen appearances through sixty eight and a third innings. Then he had the elbow issues at shut him down at the end he tried to Rehab rested didn't work. He had Tommy John. Surgery missed all of last season man. It would not be good for anybody if he missed all of this season now he's not going to have a season, but. You could adding depress. Go and having throw on a regular basis as part of the reds player pool, and then I don't know that we're gonNA, get crazy and say if push comes to shove or if he's really feeling good, you know the I. Find It hard to believe. They were jumping from low a Dayton in two thousand, eighteen to the major leagues in September Stranger. Things have happened, but it would not shock me if after all of that last night in a tweet and then in an instagram Cincinnati is the locator. Let's go in all capital letters than being. We would see in the next day or so. The reds announced they have added hundred green to the player pool in. He will work with the group out of prisco Park would not shock. We've reached the midway. Point of the show I've got an idea. I got a lot of ideas. Some are bad. I think this idea works. I think it would be good for you. I think it would be good for the reds. I think it would be good for the reds community. Fund will lay that out as we continue its Arnelle carrier sportstalk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet at seven hundred. WWL, W.

Thanks to Burley Corns for presenting the twitter feed quick, follow up in their own wants you to hear a couple of things at Kirk. Sally said. Today or a over the weekend what Chris Welch said about Shogo. The most fundamentally sound reds player since Scott Rolen. And he said you're GONNA love it. I go back to what David Bell said last week when he was two weeks news here on Sports, talk and he talked about show goes approach at the plate. Approaching it as a craft was the word he used. The baseball I Q. The ability to run the bases. You may not steal a lot of bases, but one thing you saw him do yesterday. He singled on a on a chopper up the middle. Joey votto was up next and Joey flared one to right and Shogo went I a third like it was nothing. If, Shogo can get on base. What that does to jump start this offense. Last legitimate on BASS GUY team had was Shinsu chew in two thousand thirteen. Think of what it does to the rest of that batting orders at falls into place, and just think about all those little things that when you are when you're described the way Chris Welch described him. You're hitting the cutoff man. You're throwing to the right base. You're taking the extra base. You're hitting behind the runners. All of those things are huge, and it seems as though they're just. They come naturally a second nature to show Gawky. That's him as a baseball player and I love that. Kirk Rally said something, a couple of things that that stuck out with eight, and the more I hear, Kirk talk and he was with segued for a while during the the Doug had interviews during the last baseball, but Kirk Sally one has a as a great voice to. He has really good insight into the game he could articulated in threes got a sense of humor, and if you add all that up, I tweeted this earlier I. Think Kirk Alec can be a baseball analyst someday whether it's TV or radio MLB. Network whatever it is, he's a really smart guy. Can talk the game baseball and inject a little bit of humor in it and I? I've always enjoyed what he's been on the show with me as well. He was asked about remember last week. We talked to MLB DOT. COM ranked the top ten starting rotations in baseball, and they write the reds third and I did a topic on that now we talked about the depth, the quality and depth of that read starting rotation Kurt was asked about it any said third. I think three is a little low I think this should be higher I think our staff did something crazy last year with with a turnaround that they did you know from dozen eighteen two dozen nineteen. They put in a lot of hard work the DJ Caleb. They did a lot of work on their own and. We came together as a staff for sure I mean are if you look at our lineup of? Are Starting reducing. Excuse me, I mean! On paper, it's scary and in real life. It's even scarier and I'm not I. don't even think it's top. Heavyweight people are saying I. Think when you you know you guys like disco. Fonteyn Wave Miley get just lost because the top three are just so talented, but. Wade through Friday night Napoli Card might team up and disco throws about the most untalkative about ninety six, ninety seven in the big league, so he's got wipe out slider. So from that perspective I think we're really good, I think. I think we're both ends. Accept Challenge and and and. Do what they did last year in and take a step up. Into two thousand and twenty I think he'll be better. Lorenzo is going to be better. guy like Pedro. STROKE IS GONNA. Come in and add some to our door Volkan. Amir Stevenson. These guys, these guys all have caliber experience now they have a lot of experience in and hopefully stars go as long as possible, and they won't have too much, but when they get in. They're gonNA. They're gonNA. Close the door and help us preserve someone's bill. That was good stuff on raids rotation low at three overall on paper. It's scary in real life. It's even. Even scarier reds catcher, Kirk Sally and I loved his answer when he was asked about it. I think everybody's wondering what.

"Here we go eight Oh, nine seven hundred wwl, wer carriers sportstalk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet I would be your host Lance McAlister I would be very appreciative of the fact. You have chosen to spend some time hanging out. We'll see what we can do over the next fifty one minutes, and then it's Rachel and from nine to midnight tonight by the way. If you missed a conversation with a mere Garrett, it was powerful. It was moving, and it was insightful last night. I assume that's available in podcast form Yes podcast Rachel's interview with the mirror that's on. Is that podcast yet it is on podcast. It is worth listening if you happen to miss it last night. Excellent. The the the the conversation was was really really good stuff all right we We jumped into the reds I area from David Bell. You heard from Sonny Gray we talked about the decision on the day started the reds rotation. Couple of other things baseball related. We've morphed into our second topic. Night started with a fifty four year baseball executive who retired over the weekend at a piece written to the Associated Press he wrote. A piece titled. Confessions of a baseball purist talking about what he doesn't like about the game anymore and that led to a caller who's going to jump in on that before they dropped off the other night about old school versus new school, and I said well I. Don't I don't WanNa miss out on that opportunity. Let me grab that thought and see if we can turn it into a topic of where you stand as a sports fan if you're more old school or new school. And I get clearly right now. It's overwhelming I've made it a twitter question. It's been the question on my facebook page all day today, a lance McAlister sports pages the facebook overwhelming old school, and I get longing for the air quotes here that good old days. But I, it seems like the default position is just take me back. Twenty or thirty years ago at everything was better than. I just I have a tough time being convinced going back twenty or thirty years there be more gained than there would be lost. I mean how far back do you want to go to keep it the way it used to be? Do you want leather helmets for football with no forward pass. T one peach baskets for the NBA. Do you want no mask for hockey I? Mean baseball one part I get. People complain all the time. Just leave the game alone. I don't like change in evolution well, if that's the case, how strict are you on that? Because baseball once allow batters to request where they wanted to pitch, like they'd hold their hand and say throw it right here. You want to go back to that used to be fly ball to be caught him on one bounce. That was an out. Up until eighteen eighty three pitchers threw the ball underhand. We Wanna go back to that because we don't like change. At one point in baseball bat was flat on one side. Walks were scored as a hit is Wasser as good as a hit. According to literally coach, Mary used to always say that the spitball up. Until one thousand, nine, hundred twenty was allowed. The ground rule doubles were actually home runs up until nineteen thirty if it hit and bounce in home run. But we evolved we changed. We realized that things can be done differently in a better way to upgrade it. Improve the game. I watch the Golf Tournament of the weekend and Bryson Sham to Shambo is going to be a topic tomorrow night I've waiting to get to all week, but just watching his drive and the graphic they use the ark of the red line, showing how far it goes, the to goes how it goes, and then the distance immediately. The fact that we're we're living in a age where you can wager on sports online on our phone. The the fact that we've a better understanding of how you go about winning in this day and age in sports because we have a better understanding of how a player is performing in relation to everybody else. I view all those things as progress as as pluses as new school. Old, school to me was watching a baseball game from thirty years ago over the weekend going what the Hell's going on. There's nothing on the screen. I don't get it in HD. And I. Don't know what the score is. I don't know what any it is I. Don't know what the county is and I. Don't know what other teams are doing in baseball at this time. Go to the phones, five, one, three, seven, four, nine, seven, thousand, one, eight, hundred, the big one and pound, seven, hundred on at and T. how `bout. Here, we welcome to sportstalk. How are you? How are you? I'm well. Thanks for calling. Thanks for having me talk or yes, it's a McCall say. I'm. I have evolved like really. Click and I'll tell you walk. An old school guy through and I have three buddies that. Two of them are tiger fans of? Yankee Fan. This is been our argument at. My. Old School Way. The pitcher supposed to have or Always come back. which are you supposed to have someone have? Nater Potter on the on the golf. Course you know. I want to tell you what I. Won't be tell you what the coroner has done the me Oh. It has got me evolving because. And I'm selfish, because of it I'll look at the rich depth in as force back. Depth there and I'm thinking. Hey. Maybe I can like designated hitter. I start thinking about how in the you mean. The tenth inning have a runner on second base that means that show miles school They're going to have to cut some more. You know in All you know it's Kinda like. A tie in football lawn now one of the most exciting Extra any extra play is college or high school Playing extra point I think playing for. Time. Yes so I've evolved I'm excited about it. and I saw. Can you remember when your dad would say I was this guy? Why Dad and he would say son because I said so. I used to be the guy that sage because I say so. That's what I'm looking for. Scott I'm glad you listen. It means a lot you called. Thank you. Have a great night Chris I am on, facebook, says a new school. Tradition is just peer pressure from dead people. I'd never heard that line before Chris. Did you make that upper somebody? known for quoting that Don Gilligan says old school definitely. I missed two separate leagues that played each other only in the all. "The game. It just sounds after fifty four years to go out that way. To me that's disappointing, go back to the phones. The red schedule is out and bit by bit. We learn a little bit more. John is on seven hundred wwl John. They Lance and thank you. Thanks for calling. A I. You almost wonder if that guy is just maybe i. mean and again he's advanced in age. So you kind of wonder if it's just one last chance. One last give it to everybody one more time, and and all that so I give them a little bit of a break on that, but I want the one thing I do that does frustrate me. A little bit on the analytics is just the the the ability for guys to just sit back and not put the ball in play swing from their heels on every on every swing and strikeouts. Go Way up, and that's the part that frustrates me about analytics I, I I guess I'm a little bit old school with putting the ball in play and moving runners and that kind of stuff, but I understand all the other parts of and all that type of stuff John. John you raise a great point and I think once there's a counter it'll help that because the reality is right now whether we like it or not Ottoman I. Don't like it as much. The reality is in the game today with pitchers dominating so much the number the percentages say it's going to be almost impossible to stern together three hits in an inning to get a runner home. The odd say the home run is better play for the home run. That is one run automatically when so until the odds tilt the other? Other way, and whether that's rule changes, or whatever right now pitching is so dominant in the game teams look and say. Can we really string together three hits in an inning or or two hits a button? Everything else, and they say the odds will indicate right now. If we swing from our heels, we'll take the home run or the strike at the end result, and that saddens me, but something has to count. Something has to happen in the game to counter at the other way, and that may be rule changes or be. I don't know. Maybe it's taking something away from the pitchers to even things out and I don't know what that's going to be ultimately. Yeah Yeah and I think one thing to add onto that I think one of the rationales to is that you have enough mediocre to bad pitching in baseball that a lot of people say hey, look we can. We can be halfway decent if we just try to hit as many home runs. Yes, we can, but unfortunately, if we see a lot of time, those teams get into fo season or down the stretch, and as we know good pitching, and usually wins out and the one team that did kind of the tables all been almost hate to say it because people get fired up about this, but the Astros. Astros a few years ago was a team that kind of put the ball in play and kind of did things away now they did have some guys that could hit home run, but they also kept their strikeouts way down and put the ball played, and usually those things are kinda contagious so i. don't know if that would kinda start turning things, but anyway just real quick dealing on the Scheduler I'm really excited about it, and unfortunately you're going through the schedule and talk about all the records of the teams. All here we go I can read get off to a great start. You're going to play. Well. We haven't beaten anybody. You all. Don't give them any ideas that I can tell inundated on Xtra ratings with those calls. Man. Playing anybody talking about. Thanks John Good talking to you. That idea yet some point, an extra ratings, they'll break from the gate, nine and one well. They've beaten the Tigers and the OH. No but I think John made a good point about trends and it becomes. It's always a copycat league. Joe Madden over the weekend. The angels manager said he wonders he wonders what the extra inning rule the way it is if we don't see more of an infusion of bunting. The hit and run and the stolen base, perhaps at least in extra innings, we'll head down the stretch. We gotTA Hustle on this date in reds history to close it out. "Know this. Well. Let me catch myself I. was about to say just know this? We're going to get baseball. I'd like to feel that way I. Don't feel as confident in that as I did when this announcement was, I made. But that's not going to deprive me of my giddiness at a schedule being released it. If for nothing else when I get home tonight, I can tell the owners my fantasy baseball league. What the setup is for ESPN? Fantasy Baseball League and start tracking down league fees at this point. So six days off scattered over the sixty games. September twenty seven the end of the regular season at this point this point a regular playoff setup. There were discussions during the muck and mire of all the debate back and forth between the two sides that there would be expanded playoffs. Those did not happen. When Rob Manford imposed the plan. There is a thought that maybe those talks could be resurfaced even on the fly between the owners and the players, but at this point let's also admit there are some. Some rather large fish to be fried when you have had eight players over the weekend, opt out from Nick marquess today. The Braves David Price of the Los Angeles dodgers over the weekend and others we get dribs and drabs of information about players that have tested positive some names. We know other names. We don't know and that's understandable at this point at. At least from the way, Major League, baseball a set it up and we know there is a growing concern within a baseball number of teams who the initial plan was. Players would get tested every day, and there were at least three teams today, either didn't get tested over the weekend or don't have test results back in three teams. Today said they were not. Not Practicing as a result, they were going to wait for the test to come back before they were back on the baseball field. So let's do this. We'll take a timeout back. We'll talk with. David Bell about how the first four days gone. What he thinks of a schedule of being in place and a whole lot more are carrier sportstalk presented by. Seven WWL W. Six, thirty seven. Seven hundred wwl W we have a developing situation weather wise. We need to check on that quickly. National Weather Service issuing a flash flood warning for northwestern Clermont County that is until nine thirty tonight. That's part of that severe thunderstorm that has been moving through that still in effect until six forty five in just reminder to flash flood warning in effect for Southeastern Hamilton County until nine fifteen. We'll keep you updated on severe weather here on newsradio seven hundred w w all right thanks Sean let's get. Get to at six thirty eight seven hundred wwl w. let's talk baseball. It's nice to see a schedule in front of us, and it has been released in the last few minutes. It is day four of summer camp for the reds both great American ballpark and PRISCO which is a beautiful facility for more on that little reds baseball. Let's welcome in reds manager David Bell. David Lance McAlister how. Are you. Doing I'm well. Great to hear your voice and kind of exciting to schedule. We can look at. It. Makes it a little bit more real, doesn't it? Them sitting here, checking it out right now and a little over two weeks until. Opening night in Cincinnati and and. Makes it seem more real you know? We knew basically went opening day was going to be, but not seeing schedule. you know it's just? Fun, you know it's going to be. It's going to be here before we know so. It's gone smooth here the first few days and it's going to happen. Have to happen quick, but we're. Or each day we're getting closer and closer to being ready David. Let me springboard off of that because you guys are put so much time planning preparation into this with a lot of unknowns four days in. Do you like how things are playing out? We! Do we're? Really thrilled and you know you can do all the preparation and planning and talking and communicating but until. You get here and start What is? Just a completely different. Environment. You're not sure how it's going to turn out the were. Thrilled and the key to so far has been the attitude of the players you know players are. are motivated I. Don't like to get ready for the season, but they're motivated to stay healthy. Because they want to be able to play. They want to be able to compete They want. To be able to do that together as a team and she how good we can be We're so excited months from training ended and You know just to be able to pick back up where we left off and and see this all happened that that's. You know that kind of motivation to go through. You know if you. If you don't have the right attitude towards some of the protocols that were. Being asked to do need to do right now. To stay healthy they could create a bad environment and it could lead to. getting sick and you know our team. My priorities stay healthy their number one. Priority for. All of our wellbeing and The wellbeing of family members of our players and coaches and staff. and in the great thing is, that will also lead into other going. That's to be able to play and. David I've been struck over the last three months in talking with a couple of players Josh van meter told me his data is lunch hour was doing flips with him, and his girlfriend was dropping pitches into the batting machine to keep him ready Nate Jones. told me he built a pitching mound with his dad was throwing out of his barn. It seems as a whole. You guys really put in the work when they were away from this. there's no question and you know we. We can accomplish a lot in three weeks, but you know. The guys that? Came in ready to this can't in are going to have an advantage and our guys All of them did the work they stayed ready and it shows I have. Some guys that showed up in can't and and really the best shape of their life and they they really took. took the time not only to get in great shape, but. Probably just like other people in the situation and You know kind of the way you coached. this time and if you could somehow turn it into an opportunity. It'd be that much further that I players did not only did they get in great shape? But they you know that caught up on some health and rest and really came in ready to go and excited to be back on the field, and and they're in twos to be back. It seems like a guy who who caught up on things got healthy, and even streamlined his body and his in tremendous shape, but somebody like Nixon Zell. Ensure de. He was in he's. You know great athlete. He was what I consider to be good shape in spring training. He was strong. and you know I. Just I didn't think much of it When I saw him the other day for the first time. I was. Really surprised and Then, talking to him. she's thrilled with where his body. He was able to get body the big thing for him as go into. Rehab and onto the shoulder surgery, and all you can't. You can't do the same workout, so you would typically do so. it was able to get back to that over the last few months and years just in phenomenal shape, really lean, but strong stronger than he wasn't spring training, so it's just GonNa play into his athleticism and and it will.

"Those on seven o'clock were flying tonight. Arnelle carrier sportstalk presented by Kelsey. Chevrolet I'm Lance McAlister Gary Jeff Walker's in at nine tonight. He will take you from nine to midnight. Couple of observations on what the reds announced yesterday pool thoughts I didn't worked up really to any extent because. It's been so long I mean camp was shut down on March twelfth, but remember how we felt about this team on on, March twelfth. We were really excited about the makeup of this team I talked with Dick Williams that night on sports talk and he said and I quote I really liked this team I mean we had spent time analyzing this team bottom, and really the takeaway at that point was maybe a bit of a concern on who the backup shortstop was going to be maybe the concern on the timetable of when you any Suarez would be. Be completely ready to go. Nixon's L. would be completely ready to go. It may be if they had. Is there another arm they could add to that bullpen well swears his healthy Cinderella's healthy. Perhaps there's a shortstop out. There becomes available on. Maybe maybe a relief pitcher as well as a wiggle room with that, but I mean. This team was good to go coming out of Camp Dick Williams, talk that night about being so pleased with the way they had ramp things up to head towards opening day. This was a team that had added new stocks and cast. In Shogun Wade, mile and Pedro strope. Derek Dietrich not being on the camp roster. I can't get worked up about I. Think ultimately if if they don't find anybody. That's better than him. I could see him being a part of the thirty player pool on their opening day roster. ARISTIDIES Aquino No shock. He's at Pasco ultimately I. Don't think he's going to be on the thirty man player pull the begins the season. He didn't hit in September. He didn't hidden winter ball. He didn't hit in the spring and I think most thought back in March we were assigning a ticket to triple eight for Aristidies Aquino. Tyler Stevenson I would think we'll be part of the three-man traveling taxi squad. Each team will travel with a three player taxi squad. One of those must be a Catcher, so that's going to be Tyler Stevenson. That'll be good for him. Couple, I guess a couple of surprises one the shortstop Blake. The twenty. Third Round Pick. He was the eighty fourth player taken overall in the draft in the third round in two thousand fifteen, he decided to retire. He's twenty six years old Chris. Hokey is not assigned to either camp. He was a second round pick in twenty-six teen. You'd like to think someone used a second round. Pick on as recently as twenty sixteen would be perhaps more in the mix mark Peyton is an interesting guy to keep an eye out for because he's a rule five in in most cases you have to spend the entire year on the with the major league team or be offered back. To that this year, because of what's going on I, think he would have to be on the major league active roster for a minimum of fifty days, and you could in theory stash him on the injured and not stash, but if he were hurt to be on the injured list for the others I think. Four their top five prospects are involved in the two camps number one. Prospect Nickel Dolo number three. Tyler Stevenson number four Jonathan India number five Jose Garcia Jose Garcia was the The Guy who dazzled during spring training yet has never played above Aa I. Think in the bigger picture that concern has to be what this season is in terms of the minor leagues, and that's a wash for the likes of one hundred grain and reese hines and and Mike Siani the the the stud gloves center. Who played for the Dayton Dragons Tony Santini? Packing TJ Frito get I mean hundred green, the real kicker on green at this point, not being part of either pool I mean we're talking about hundred didn't pitch last season because of the Tommy John Surgery. And won't pitch this season. Because of the Tommy John Surgery which. Great it gets him further away and a chance to. Get stronger and yet he's not doing that with real game experience in innings under his belt, which pushes you into twenty twenty one thinking. He's got a build up innings when he never really had built up innings before to begin with he was on a limited innings pitched counted boy I'm going back now on the years, it would have been two thousand eighteen. At. Dayton! The active roster will start at thirty on opening day. It will shrink to twenty-eight after the first two weeks of the season then down to twenty-six after four weeks of the season. Players who don't make the thirty will continue to do their thing at at PRISCO. During all of this there are some players who have out clauses in their contracts primarily guys in in I'm I'm guessing on guys like? Nate Jones Tyler Thornburg Mat Davidson guys who signed minor league deals that got into camp and you had to tell them by a certain date. You were going to keep them on the major league roster or not, and then they have a decision, I think. This time around. It's five days before the start of the season. They could choose to opt out and go someplace else. There is also. The also got a group of guys who would be without options at this point. Who if they didn't make your opening day? Thirty would be designated for assignment exposed to other teams grabbing them, and that includes stuff. Let's Lucas Sims. Robert Stevenson's in that group Philip Irvine's in that group Scott Shetler is in that group. One Guy who's not in either the Pasco camp or the great American Ballpark camp is the right handed pitching prospect Vladimir Gutierrez he was their number fifteen prospect according to MLB pipeline twenty four years old yesterday, the announcement and Nick Kroll indicated during the zoom. They found out about this back. During the first spring training, he was suspended for testing positive for a PD and that's eighty game suspension. They had signed him out of Cuba. In Twenty Years and backtracking here to twenty sixteen, they gave him almost five million dollars I think it was four point seven five million. And he's had said some flashes. But. More often than not, it's been the frustration of lack of command consistency WANNA say last season. He had an era a tick over six. You may twenty seven starts at triple level. But he was a guy. They were hoping they can kind of get fixed. Get right and had some stuff pretty good curveball. If I remember correctly that had impressed people enough to give him four point seven five million dollars back in two thousand sixteen, they gave a nice chunk, the other shortstop, the Cuban shorts out to say, they gave him the neighborhood of five or six million to our freighter Rodriguez. shortstop all right, so that's a one hour in the books. When we come back, let's do the next phase of the adjustment process. We talked last week. One of the changes you're going to have to embrace it. Used to is extra innings and a runner on second base. The biggest one you're going to have to get used to the the one of these the biggest break from tradition, and there's a lot of purist around here. Are you ready to embrace and accept. The designated hitter. Chris Welch with an interesting comment on that to sterling on Friday. You Friday night. You will hear plus we'll get into your calls. As well. Five, one, three, seven, four, nine, seven, thousand, one, eight, hundred, the big one pound, seven, hundred on at and T. one of the books that was fun. It's now carrier sportstalk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet seven hundred W W..

"Hand You over to Jerry Jeff Walker. He will take you nine to midnight a baseball theme early and through a good chunk of the show tonight. The thought hit me as I prepared to welcome in our first guest. It is awfully nice to be talking with a baseball guest baseball stuff. Compared to negotiations and and labor issues and percentages of salaries and pro-russian of salaries and all that. The reds have handed in officially as of yesterday there player Pool for the two thousand twenty season. At the moment it contains fifty seven players thirty five of those players assigned to great American Ballpark to two of those players assigned to Prisco Park in Mason for Moran. That the man who was on the reds, beat and covers all things reds for MLB. Dot Com reds DOT COM. That would be Mark Sheldon. How are you? Doing good, lance and I hope you are too, and it's really nice to about baseball. Even getting yelled at on twitter for baseball stuff, so that's a nice refreshing change to absolutely i. Let's start with the basics here. fifty-seven players at this moment out of a possible sixty. What is the benefit of not going all the way up to sixty at this point for the reds? I think it's just more roster flexibility. If kinda like in the days before spring training or the opening day of the season, you might have a guy that gets released. Cut in the right for whatever reason they WANNA pick that player up it could you know? It's based on things that happened in camp when player might get hurt or just in his fit as others are. They WANNA add a guy Derek Dietrich is is out there. Still he's on the. Signed by the team, and then even the organization thought on that player polls yet you could be at. It could also add hundred green. You know maybe a couple of months down the road or a month down the road if they choose to, there's some maneuverability that way and market is not a clear line drawn in the sand. Great American is like Varsity and Pasco is junior varsity. It's not that clear as It's not some closure doing it that way. Some closer, Dylan it the the bigly called players or the ones that are have a shot at the big leagues, going to be a big league ballpark, and the rest of the dispatch to a minor league facility read. say they're not doing it that way. A lot of it is because they stacks so many pictures of GDP and catchers just simply because of. Of the rules, social distancing and other things like that they had the sense of people out to Mason now when the season does start the people that are obviously going to be stationed, practical park will be the equivalent of the minor. Leagues Aaa Louisville. If you will, that could be summit in called up. Should there be any and I would assume there's also that element if you're going to be split into two parts. There's GonNa be intersquad gained. So you need X. number of players at each place to fill out, get I mean you need a shortstop and both places third base I mean there has to be some level of consideration along those lines, right? I would think so. like you know this is. This is new to a lot of. The mechanism blueprints aren't totally clear yet, but hopefully that that will come into into focus, but yeah you have to figure. You gotTA. Have enough coverage because they're not only allowed to play three exhibition games against other teams during the next three weeks and stands to reason since there's no like in the same city like Chicago. There's to Chicago. Teams play each other here. There's not really that option and they may have to wait until whoever the the next the first team that comes to town that could be their exhibition. Apologetic Mark Sheldon MLB DOT COM dot com. Check it in Merck. How ultimately potentially at least could niccolo their first round pick a year ago? Factor into this equation? I think he can factor in I. Mean he was going to get cut? Cut I believe from the I can't remember from in March, but obviously guide her. Getting brought back like salary mono was caught, and he's been brought back I think with all could appear as as bullpen guy I mean theoretically I suppose he could be a starter. Should anything happen to the rotation by each figure with Molly figure? Look Assam's a couple. Couple of others they have some coverage. They're on the rotation side, but with all could be a piece for the for the bullpen. He could be accessible that way I don't think it would be a problem for him to make that jump at this change. I know you're getting this question. A Lot I think it's on the minds of everybody along. The lines of pitching in some school of thought, what if they go with a four man? What if they go with a six man why they go with a piggyback tandem? What do you make of potentially what the use of pitchers could look like? It's one of those things to see. When we actually talked to their Johnston and David fell, but I. I kind of expecting the five man rotation still to have a solid five man group. I, I don't know Trevor Bowers a big advocate of the former station, but that would mean somebody gets cut out and I. Don't see them doing that. the six man rotation. Over I. I really think. The reservoir set up in a lot of teams with the you know. What's the malaise? The SIMS OF ANY MODEL? If you other guys that they could, have you know in the early going. To go thirty. Three innings to four sixty to seventy five pitches, and then they have to bridge that gap with three or four inning relief, appearance and Mali concert do that. They can prepare them as a starter and kind of having back up the the other starter, so it'd be hard pitch cancer early innings limits things like that, and then we'll. We'll see how those guys do, but. But I think middle relief is going to be a huge part of the equation going into the regular mark among the guys who ultimately dolt become a part of this pool. Who our prospects whether it's hundred green or someone who's not even in the pool right now. Are Reese hines Stewart Fairchild? Guys like what happens to them in ultimately in the twenty twenty season. Another Mr. Lance I think there's been some rumblings that there might be an attempt to have a fall league of some sort. for minor leaguers didn't get to play anywhere this this year. Their skills having a row too much. A lot of them are probably working via zoom with with their coaches, and what their strength people and their trainers. But that's one of the mystery it hasn't been figured out yet. They're really just really focused on the bigly. Friday is the first workout is is the phase between now and then like the we call it. The intake phase of what's happening right now. I kind of equate Wednesday July first. Is the report A. That's the kind of the day. They have to be there now. What happens is and some players have already done. This is that when they show up at the ballpark and report quote Unquote they get tested, and then they have to isolate away from the ballpark for two full days, and then they're allowed to come back if they test negative, so a lot of guys are GonNa have already done this and a few more. We'll probably do it on. Wednesday and then theoretically everyone will be ready for Friday. Final question on I know this is ever evolving situation in. Probably, there's things you're trying to figure out in your mind, but. Ultimately this season. What will what will covering this camp this spring training two point Oh, and then the regular season be like for a member of the media. Someone who was a beat writer like you? Honestly, it's another thing that I'm still waiting to see how it turns out I mean I've seen the world. I've heard the rules our interview. Be Done over zoom whether you at the Ballpark, or if you covered the ancient home, I'm likely not going to travel, so it's GonNa. be a different thing. you know what there's going to be lost? And maybe some of the more unique nuance that that that is able to be gained from a reporter, standing clubhouse, and talking to a player in a more or less formal environment. When they're on camera when they're on the radio and things like that would have been werner formal a little more. stilted and I'd like to. You know that's GonNa be Kinda lost for a while, but at the same time I it's hard to complain about lack of nuance when there was no season at all. So I'm I'm accepting. This I'm hoping that by this time next year we're in the middle of a regular season, and it's been going on since the end of March and everything's back to normal. Obviously, we don't know that, but hopefully this little sixty games sprint will be interesting and the red. They still think are as competitive in division. They were before the the.

What have the last three months been like no, no baseball season and everybody's world turned upside down. What's it been like for you during that period? Yes definitely definitely been different Xiaobin on been on the field playing some games, but it's been a lot of indoor work. Indoor facilities to begin my work in the weight room, hitting slowing and just keeping in the best shape, possible very happy with my body right now so. A lot of work that's been paying in putting. Did you have a sense going in of the reds interest for you? Did you think there was an opportunity at twelve of you're there? their my opinion. I didn't know exactly what was going to happen. I had an idea from some different places. But I'm going in and hearing that I'm hearing my name called and number twelve is unbelievable, experience and like something I will never forget any idea over the months any idea how many zoom meetings you did with teams or what? What was that process like? There is a lot. A number. A really cool experience, though this town with everybody has to say and seeing where I landed as well You know I'm very very happy very excited and you know There's no way to get out there. Get the red uniform on and Get out there and play. You know that's something that I'm very excited for win. Reds fans, watch you or even when they go to Youtube and watch some of your clips to this point, what do you? What do you hope they see in you as a player in the way you play the game? This together does outplays hard plays away. You know what I mean I like to go out there and you know I. Bring a sense of confidence, a little bit of swagger, but Um, not not not a person's financial at all. Go out there fighting in the right way and you know I love the hit so. Actually you know had a couple of home runs and pity game with a lot of passion. I laughed last night. You talked about going to youtube and watching King Griffey Junior. Tell us about your appreciation for for junior, not not just the player, but the person it seems Oh. Yeah, he's A. He's a role model for me. Most definitely something. I look up to and I'm Kinda resemble my game after just a swing and his carrots there on and off the field. You know, but a great husband. Right father. Someone that you know you Kinda WanNA strive to be speaking of your swing. You simplified it last summer. Did you find confidence after that change? Oh, absolutely I'm I've always had confidence. Chain, and I'm seeing some of the things I did. more consistency felt great. Um, you know not only still even now over the whole porn pain, continue to keep them better with that and very very happy with what I did and continue to keep growing into Austin here. Here's what jumped out to me. That impresses me about your decision to when you change your swing. You were I believe at the time line is right. This was this was during some high level competition showcase events. Some guys might be Leery of getting out of their comfort zone against top notch competition. You went right to it and did it right through that, didn't you? Absolutely how most definitely There was a mike the night before decision You know playing a great. You know that's on. The next day. Really nerve wracking. Just gone and. Not. Knowing what to expect came out really well at home that day and Bad and constantly been working on that conflict on ed working with that. Here's another thing that jumps out to me and looking at your junior year. I know you were walked a lot. Few teams wanted to pitch to you that had to help your disciplined, because it doesn't seem like you chase you instead of trying to do too much. You kind of just took what they gave you. Absolutely you know PA they're definitely. A Lotta walks at high full season an anyway anyway to help the team in on base, though second and third, and I'm getting scorn position for Dada hit me in so whatever it took to help the team out and. You know being a team player and help out 'til till reds fans about your outfield skills. Is there a position out there you're? You're most comfortable play. Now on a theatrical play all three Coach those and. To play I'M GONNA. Go out there and play one hundred and ten percent now I'm getting very strong arm, and I'm love for people out on. Routes that are baseball and Myself know thoughts and you know scar off the game hard in the right way without a senior season for everybody to watch. How big were those showcase events that you played in last summer? They were awesome and other. It was so much fun I'm going out there playing some grey competition on even even the coaches that were there sure so much knowledge and I'm just being there enough for me to be a sponge and listen to it all, and and just try to help me and put my game as much as possible. You were at Wrigley Field you won the under armour Homerun Derby. Take me back to that moment. How cool was that? That was awesome exchange. Being around great competitors, and you know coming on top and him. and..

"WHO's it is a gorgeous stadium for more on that the idea behind it and the execution of the plan, welcome in their president that would be Jonathan Griffith Jonathan Lance McAlister how are you? Great doing great down here. Land I had to be on here to tell us. How did this one I love the idea. How did the idea come about? You know it's one of those things that minor league baseball like everybody else. We haven't had any business as far as the though so we're always throwing out ideas. And actually we were the owner and his daughter. We were sitting in the office. Filling out ideas and randomly the hair airbnb came up and it was like well. Yes, we can run with this. And we just started running with. It happened about three weeks ago and you know with everything being on true lockdown. We were just planning for eventually. We will open up once. We opened up what you may do and this was one of the ideas that we came up with. And, it's been going well. What is the cost per night to rent the stadium? We fifteen hundred dollars for ten people to be able to sleep in the clubhouse. You abandon cage, and of course used to field as well one of the great things. We have as well as a lot of upgrades that you're able to have their. You can have a fireworks show. You could have a movie night. You can have a set up just like you know. The the big leaguers with the cage and everything else to and then, of course we have chef on staff, which is a pretty unique for us as well so you can have any meal that you would like They're in the clubhouse. We've actually already had. We also run bubbling sweet spot candy store, and I screamed shop that we actually have an ice cream bar or the first weekend so It's really exciting for the. The people get to use the ballpark and of course for us, you know the big thing is meeting on mission to improve the quality of like not merely and and being able to let people have that ability to come there for pretty affordable price and get to being in the stadium, and and of course jobs you know that that's key and making sure that we're able to employ people, and and even have jobs at the Blue Office Jonathan. What's the response been since these nights became available? Pretty Amazing not only immediate pension. Wise. We've been literally worldwide. We were Japan. Canada. But we, we sold out our first thirty three nights within twenty four hours. And we've actually. Reservations because of the fact that we don't. We'll have based on July and August, and show then we'll be starting in the fall and then fortunately, unfortunately, we have a college football team that plays here as well University of Florida, so we're kind of working around everything to make sure that we don't have football players or baseball players dinner..

"Know what in the nineteen seventy world series I I took a heartbreak when we got clobbered by Baltimore, a great seven game series and seventy two against the as a great great world series against Boston to sweets, after that I was jacked up on fall of them and I would be jacked up again if the red we're in it, and as far as Bado hit four hundred. What did you say to two hundred eighty eight game three point one? That's right around two hundred sixty a fact that he plays all of them, and he hit four, hundred or two hundred and fifty back. He's got my respect. There's no doubt about dad. Hey, send my best to your daughter. Senator Mike. Congrats all right. Thank you so much. Thank you for the call. Yeah, let's do the math here. It's eighty two to qualify for the batting title. It's the number of games in a season times three point one plate appearances I. I'm pretty sure and that, so that's that's two, and that's eight zero, and that's a six there and twenty four. That's a two four and carry the one. But their math on the radio live with Lance mcallister, that's two hundred and fifty four plate appearances to qualify for the title that means if someone who who hit more than that, but only had two hundred plate appearances. They wouldn't qualify to beat out. But in context of history I view it differently I. Think most would I think there's team in teams. Would all be competing well as I say this I can think of the counter, but I was GONNA say teams would all be competing in the same games? It'd be eighty two game window for everybody in the world series debate as as Terry Francona references. Hey, everybody has eighty two games the last one. One standing is the winner you could argue. Everybody would have the same eighty two games to accumulate their batting average. Why would it be well? It wouldn't be different in terms of who won the batting title. It would be different viewed in terms of if it was the accomplishment of hitting four hundred for the first time since one, thousand, nine, hundred eighty. What is how I would view it? You would certainly had. Everybody would would have the same chance to win the batting title for Eighty Two gapes. And,.

How put it in words? You know that you and I did grow up in a time of texting. And it's one thing for you to say that somebody or you're an idiot and I'm gonNA I'm GonNa kick your butt after school or something but with texting when you when you put it in writing and send it to. Somebody'S PHONE. It has a different impact than than than if If you say you know what I mean you've actually put it in writing and you send it to your personal device your phone and and it it. I am very well and I'm glad you could spend a few minutes. Take take me. Back Joe. Borough was drafted April twenty third. How would you describe the demand for the Joe Borough Jersey since that night? Well to be honest with you. It started about a week before that we were taking pre orders for these and really didn't know what we were getting ourselves into. We ordered a couple of hundred thinking. Well we older too. Many of these are people really going to be buying into this. You know and then you know we we we. We were closed down for a couple of weeks. We opened up last Tuesday morning and it was like Christmas morning. We had twenty boxes or burrow jerseys waiting for us and by Wednesday they were just about all gone bad. Oh Man I think everybody's frame of reference is back to Curson Palmer. D Do you have a rely recollection of anything like this when Carson was drafted. It's not even close. You Know Carson with Heisman Trophy winner first round pick but he wasn't Jodhpur phenomenon. Either I don't really understand it fully but the build up around Joe Burrell compared to Carson Palmer. It's night and day thrill. Media is much much bigger so as you mentioned you are. Now you're open right now. Is that correct? We are yes. We opened our doors. Turn the life back on last Tuesday morning. We have all the faith measures in place by the glass masks are required by anybody coming in so we've been Having walking customers as of last week yeah do you. Do you have the borough jerseys in stock or do you have to order them? At this point. We're still okay if you have if you're three. Xl Or if you're a toddler or a youth size we have those in stock still Every other size he ran out of like I said before. Probably in a day or so We went through a couple of hundred so we actually have more on order. They are telling us at Nike that we should expect him. Hopefully by the middle of June. Or give me an idea of what say for an adult size. Something that I would wear. What is the cost of Joe? Borough JERSEY. There eighty nine ninety nine. There's three different Nike Jerseys. If they make this is the cheaper of the three And Really Nice. He's had a manufacturing issue because of covid nineteen. It had to shut down a lot of their capabilities. Where they make these jerseys so really there only able to do the cheaper one four now. They told us during the season. They should have more. The center dent then Jeremy Hill. That might be more of a cost. Effective way of doing the The burgers even buying a new one. Absolutely talking about Joe Borough Jersey Mania. That is unfolding. Were at the epicenter of all of it with Eric. Cook from Cook Sporting goods on Fourth Street downtown. Let me let me switch over to the reds for a second they had built up so much momentum in the offseason with so many signings did that translate into reds fans wanting reds jerseys. This off season you know I have a feeling it would. That's one of the negative things. And of course we have to keep everything perspective with everything going on in the world but we were really looking forward to a bigger red season than we've had in a Lotta years and because we were shut down for a couple of months we haven't seen it You know which is a shame but again I think whenever they start to play ball again. I think there will be that excitement again so I think everybody in the city is open for that question related to the Regin Shogo Akiyama if someone wants to show Jersey does the back have shogo or does it have well. I hope it has ocoee on our current store. Not You can go the other way too. That's beautiful. I love the flexibility. Actually myself my cousin Ryan Cutting Kathy. Where the fifth generation? We're all working there now.
