"Max Verstappen beat Charles Leclerc to victory, in Formula One's first Miami Grand Prix, winning after passing on track early on and defying pressure after a late safety car caused by a collision between McLaren's Lando Norris and Pierre gasly. Ferrari could not turn their front row lockout into a one two finish and I want to know from the guys on the podcast today where the Red Bull considered themselves unlucky not to get a one to finish. It was a power unit issue possibly holding Perez back in fourth. Instead, it would be Verstappen, leclerc, science, podium, not the last time we've seen that podium I bet you in 2022. I'm joined on the podcast today from Miami. It's so nice to have you guys all sat around a table back at the races again. We've got Luke Smith, Jess mcfadden and out of his box, Stuart coddling at cottage will start with you back at a Grand Prix. Literally out of my suitcase and out of the box room, which I share with the air con unit, which we've fortunately turned off so that our listeners don't hear some terrible wine in the background. Usually the wine in the background is me, of course. Carlos Sainz finished third ahead of a hobbled Sergio Pérez. George Russell coming in 5th in the first of the Mercedes followed by Lewis Hamilton, Russell would gain massively with the safety car timing and beating his teammate in that battle afterwards. Verstappen, well, he would do half the job at the start of the race, being aggressive around the outside of turn one to take second place from Carlos Sainz and really science had nowhere to go if he had a break any later. He risked running into the back of his teammate so Verstappen taking one place there on lap 7 Verstappen would get within DRS range of Leclair and two laps later passed him at the same turn one to take the lead and from them never looked back. Was it an easy cruise to victory? Could Ferrari have won today in any way? Well, Mercedes Benz delighted after that 5th and 6th. Other stories to get into today Bottas, finishing 7th, but will he feel hard done by because he was running much higher for much of the race. Aachen finishing in 8th some late penalties, which if you turned off the coverage, straight after you might not know about, Alonso, you might think was 9th, but he wasn't two 5 second penalties. In 9th place, Alex Albon and in tenth, Lance stroll. So let's start with Luke. From the coverage, which always is difficult when you're watching the Formula One on the director is choosing certain things. It looked like a bit of a not quite a walk in the park because he looked pretty shattered afterwards with his helmet off, but it did look like Verstappen had that one under control. What's your analysis? I think he did definitely face pressure from leclerc. I think Red Bull definitely had the pace of advantage this weekend. I think that we saw it was pretty comfortable once he got those moves completed and got into the lead and he managed to build up quite a decent advantage over the first and he didn't need to react immediately when the clerk tried to get a bit of an undercut because the gap was so big left it too laps and came in. And yeah, it was still a good sort of 6, 7 seconds up the road and was able to hold that gap pretty firm. And I think that the only real pressure we saw max come under was after the safety car period and that obviously gave the clerk a chance to get back into the fight. They were on the same similar age of hard tires. That obviously meant there wasn't a huge advantage either way. And DRS meant that leclerc was able to get close. Now a few times he was sort of having a little look, getting quite close, but he can never get close enough to really go for a proper lunge and make a move and then yeah, we saw leclerc in the closing stage just began to fall away a little bit and that max was able to get home pretty comfortably in the end. But I think it was, yeah, it was a weekend that I think he definitely had to fight through. I thought that he was brilliant at the start. He said that he found a lot of grip on the outside of turn one, which was something a lot of the drivers didn't really find. They were all trying to stick on that inside, but he swung it around the outside well to get science. And I think that it was a really good performance for max. I think he's going to be quite high on Alex's drive ratings, not a ten though, without wishing to bring any spoilers in, but it was, yeah, I think a really good display from max. And I think that, again, points to the fact that Red Bull does have a very slight but very important pace advantage over Ferrari at the moment. And for max, I think there's a stack going around Twitter of all the races he's actually finished this year and that includes the sprint race at imola, of course. He's won. So it's a really, really strong start to the year for him. And obviously not leading the championship, but I think him and Red Bull are in a really good spot right.

"So I think there's going to be more to come from Mercedes even Christian Horner set off the race that I'm sure they'll get to the bottom of it and they will become a force again. But yeah, just crazy to see how things have changed. Rather than just going back to the front, you can become a force, but you're playing catch up. So you can't just become as fast as Ferrari or Red Bull. You've got to become exactly as fast as and more. Plus a percentage. I said that if we're a second behind, we need to find a second and a half, because that's going to put us in front enough to be able to rack up points to get back in the side to fight. So it's a big, big mountain from Mercedes climbing this season. I always feel like we don't often give enough time to drivers that have had a great day. But Yuki tsunoda coming in 7th AlphaTauri AKP Pierre gasly whilst back in 12th in that kind of DRS train behind the Williams of Alex Albon actually and Lewis Hamilton behind him just couldn't get past, but otherwise Vettel and stroll in 8th and tenth bring it in those Aston Martins like we kind of came away from Australia. And my impression was, wow, Aston just got so much work to do. And then we come here, track to track different characteristics, and they're going to do a double points finish. Anyone want to take on any thoughts on any of those drivers first, before I pick on someone Luke obviously. I actually made a flip and comment to Alex in the airport queue while we were leaving Melbourne saying, what if Aston Martin don't score any points this year? What if they finish behind Williams? And that was probably a bit like, oh, it's just said a bit of apocalyptic. It's just like, oh, imagine this extreme scenario. And then this weekend, I think, yeah, better the vessel did very, very well to get as high up as he did through qualifying and through the spread and stroll today, yeah, he was, he was in good shape and stroll after the race. He said, let's not say, look, we fixed everything and we've got a car that's going to be solidly fighting for points now. But we're going to take advantage and seize the moment when we can. And that's exactly what Aston did today. And yeah, I mean, what, 5 points on the board? That's a very tidy haul. And I think it's similar to similar to Williams in a way. It's kind of thing where it's like, we know those aren't or merit, but if we get the opportunity, we're absolutely going to take advantage of that. So yeah, very, very well deserved and very well earned today. Yeah, so our backtrack on saying not America entirely was today. But yeah, I think they can be really pleased with that. And while I mentioned Williams there, Alex Albon, brilliant again in 11th place, and he said, to him, that performance was just as good as what he did in Melbourne when he got a point for P ten and he said, yeah, I'm really happy with that. And I'm just so good to see him performing at the peak of his powers again. Disappointed that he couldn't pick up a point today, Lance stroll was in tenth. Kevin Magnussen 9th, the last of the drivers on the lead lap and Mick Schumacher's 17th, so again, a bit of a big, same as McLaren, a big difference between the driver that scored pretty well on the driver that didn't. And we know Mick is a quick driver. But Kevin Magnussen, Alex, look, I know it's a bit of a cliche to say, oh, you know, they went backwards through the race, but it did feel like he was getting a fair amount of overtakes done on him in the first half of the race, really. He did kind of go backwards a bit, but will he feel disappointed with 9th today, but K max having an incredible start to the season. It's so good to see you. It's interesting. I think it sort of the cost of regressed a little bit to its natural level. I think it was of artificially inflated by the nature of how qualifying ended up, obviously he was one of the drivers to benefit from causing a red flag or one of the drivers to cause red flag that ended up benefiting from one. Also, I do think qualifying going back to Friday night had a real impact on the weekend for so many drivers and so many teams. I don't think Mercedes necessarily had both cars knocked out in Q three if there wasn't a red flag. Sorry, both cars knocked out in Q two if there wasn't a red flag there because they were all the gaps everyone from knife down to 15th were within a couple of attempts. It was all incredibly close. And you just don't know if I'm probably thinking more about George Russell would have been able to get ahead. And that would have made things very, very different. Made things harder for Vettel and Aston Martin. They did incredibly well. A bit like in Australia. Australia, a bit of an outlier track. I think Ferrari was as good as it looked there. I don't think astin was as bad in reality as it looks there. It's the same with Magnuson, right? So yeah, so he's sort of ends up higher than he should have been because problems for others. And then it just sort of regressed naturally. And the car is very, very good. They've made massive steps as leek said, helped by the fact that the Ferrari engine is no longer really down on power. Again, it's one of those things. He looked like a bit of a sitting duck, it was a weird tactic to go on the mediums in the sprint race. That didn't make a lot of sense. I think they expected higher degradation than the one that ended up being. But yeah, he will be this might be because he's a racing driver because that's just what they like. They don't think in terms of, oh, I'm just so happy you're lucky to be here. They always want to win. He shouldn't be disappointed. I think 9th place is still a decent result for us. We move on and I just finish off below the top ten for completeness Alex Albon 11th in the Williams Pierre gasly 12 Hamilton 13th. Esteban ocon for some stories as we head down the grid, yes, a bit of an unsafe relief release for ocon into Hamilton's path in a pretty tight sort of old fashioned pit line, a bit of contact. They got away with that. Joe 15th in the Alfa Romeo Nicholas Latifi 16th mixed Schumacher at 17th Daniel Ricciardo 18th in the McLaren two DNS Fernando Alonso damage at the beginning. The race and Carlos Sainz as we have mentioned. Now we move on. In two weeks time. And we're heading to Miami. Man, this is exciting. We have hired the worst Airbnb that money can buy. And you guys are all heading over there. Are you going to be staying in the same place? Alex, you're back on your back on the road. Are you looking forward to mainly because we're going to Formula One race, but also really interestingly, we've been invited to a special media event or a special sort of sponsor event by Mercedes Benz because Lewis Hamilton and Tom Brady are playing golf together. Now I have absolutely no time for golf. But two of the greatest sportspeople in the world being together, I think that's very, very cool, so yeah, looking forward to that, as well as seeing what Miami has in offer. And what else are you looking forward to, Alex? Wishing you a happy birthday? There we go. Yeah, there we go. Thank you. We're going to catch some we're going to have some baseball out there. That's the other thing I've thought you were referencing. Yeah, we got I'm going to have 29 hour 27th birthday on May 3rd. So I'm boxing this as birthday beers baseball Brady and some Formula One. Nice. Brilliant. I like it. NFL's mommy dolphins are making way at the hard rock stadium for some Formula One Jess. Are you looking forward to just something new and a different track layout and like literally everything is unknown I know that tracks they'll be doing modeling and simulators and all that which they always do going to.

"Which teams could do it best which drivers were happy with various run plans. They were splits between teammates, for example, Max Verstappen didn't do what Sergio Pérez did, which like team Mercedes drivers was go out, build up slowly to one banker lap back off, build up again and do it and it ended up doing three runs in Q three as opposed to two. Leclerc didn't do that. He liked Verstappen just did the one run at the start for all of those crashed in the one. Again at the end, but it was too warm up lattice and science would have done a similar thing. However, he got held in the Ferrari garage because the car wouldn't start as expected or there was some problem with the starting system. So he was delayed in the garage for a little while and that just meant he didn't have the chance to prepare his tyres as needed to be because these C 5 soft tyres are really, really tricky. And with the sort of cooler temperatures, the reworked smoother track surface that it's just very, very, very challenging to be able to get them into the right operating window. That cost science, purely because he just had to push on. He said, you know, you need to crash several times. He was lacking grip. And therefore, that ultimately ultimately does him, unfortunately he's found in P 9, which is not where that Ferrari should be, but not really. Science's fault. No, definitely a fight back needed from science going into tomorrow's race. It's worth noting with the clerk as well. He did have a post qualifying investigation about whether he returned to the pits too slowly, didn't meet the time required during Q one urban studio as quickly cleared him and said that he had done the right thing, essentially there was something my traffic he tried getting out of the way. That meant his lap was too slow basically. Technically broke the rules, but he was the right thing, so it wasn't causing any issues. So yeah, no further action against the clerk. There. We've mentioned him a couple of times, so let's go on to Fernando Alonso. L plan in almost full swing it seemed like for him and alpina Lance has been pretty quick throughout this weekend and yeah, then we saw in I think in Q one and Q two is ranking very, very highly up the order. Going into Q three, we saw Fernando Alonso, he was lighting up the tie sheeps, very competitive insects one, a purple sex two, and then ended in the wall that hydraulic issue the he quickly reported over the radio. I spoke to him in the media pen after qualifying and he reckons he could have been in the fight for pole. He said that second or third was guaranteed. He said it was unbelievable and he said we've had so much bad luck on my car this year. It said, but it's the best I felt in years in terms of what I'm getting out of the car that was a positive spin on it. But yeah, he was pretty adamant he would have been in that lead fight. Do you believe that? Absolutely not. Sorry. Sorry for that. I think fourth place is going to be easily been achievable. The higher speed nature of this track, particularly compared to somewhere like Bahrain, for example, is meaning that the cars that favor those types of corners, the Alpine, the McLaren, are much more in the fight at the front of the midfield. Hence why Lando Norris, who himself did do a brilliant lap, ends up fourth place. I think Alonso probably should have been there. But no, I mean, yes, very, very fast in the middle sector because, but that DRS sign removed, cars that don't pull this, for example, the Alpine, they're going to they're going to gain. So the album was very, very quick there, but there was no way he was matching the Ferrari in sector one or 6 O three, even the Red Bull, not at least lacking the down force level over all of the Ferrari because it's a quicker car with less drag. But yeah, no air Lonzo would have touched the top, the top three positions, I think. You reckon fourth might have been possible for Alonso. Let's get to the man who did qualify forth. And that's Lando Norris and McLaren. I think making a big, big step forward this weekend compared to where they've been lately. But after qualifying, Daniel Ricciardo actually seen more upbeat than Norris Ricardo in 7th and he sort of joked as they were sat side by side in the media session that, oh, well I'm just more positive like Lando's quite sad. And he meant it obviously very jokingly, but Norris basically explained that he doesn't really believe that step four by McLaren is all down to like unlocking anything from the car. He said he thinks it's very specific, said it was sort of 70, 30, 80, 20, balanced in terms of how much is dependent on the track. But Andrea said Lee said he was pretty confident that it sounds three things, which is, yes, the track, but also the small upgrades they bought to the car for this race. And also just making up for lost time and testing because that's really put them on the back foot for the pasta, a couple of weeks. So yeah, a good result for McLaren definitely with Norris in fourth. And behind Norris are the two Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Mercedes looking where there are the kind of seems about standard and you could argue that they're lucky to maybe even be that high up because yeah, if you factor in science and so that could easily be 7th and 8th on the grid. So for Mercedes right now, is it really just damage limitation and as long as it's porpoise issue continues? Are they kind of just grabbing what points they can get? Yeah, well that's what George Russell was saying on Friday morning in the press conference it was sort of we've got to make the best of it. And yet they did that, but did rely on a couple of faster cars, not being ahead of them. Now there were two red flags through qualifying men. It was quite a long extended session. It was quite late by the time I finished one of the FIA officials even came over and said, oh, sunsets in only 40 minutes as they were sort of finishing up, so a few not concerns there, but it was something to be mindful of. And the first of those red flags, and it was quite a big incident between Nicholas Latifi and Lance stroll a bad day for the sons of Canadian billionaires. If that is a sensible sentence, I'm not sure you can have a bad day. No, no, no. Every day better be a good. And inadequate day. I don't know, but yeah, a bit of a setback there. Basically, they collided on the run down to turn 6. Both of them were on warm up laps and there was a bit of cat and mouse in terms of who wanted to go ahead and Latifi was trying to repass stroll on the inside on that run, stroll moves his car across to the right, the two collided, sent la TVA, it was quite a seem like quite a big impact with the rear of his Williams. The stewards deemed that stroll was predominantly at fault they gave him a three place grid penalty, but given that he qualified last anyway, that's going to have no material impact. Alex, what was your take on that? Was it pretty cut and dry as to who was to blame? Well, I think the steers have got this one right. I mean, on first reading, you just thought, what on earth? What on earth have you done there, Lance? You slightly more sympathetic towards him when you watch the replays and you saw there was the alpha coming? Was he thinking? I've got to get out of the way of that car. But then you're like, well, you've just passed the TV. Where do you think he was going to be? Because as the stewards say in their document, didn't appear to accelerate having gone by. It was really weird that if he was crawling by letting the Aston pass and then stroll himself almost slowed down getting alongside him, it was really strange thing to do..

"And whether or not it's right necessarily for team principles, understand the needs to be communications between the right director and the tapes. Absolutely get that. But there should be a designated person and I don't think it should be the same principle because as we transited through Singapore air force and I walked past a group of people and all I heard was no Michael no. Oh my God. It was no, that is so not right. It's just, you know, I once it's that part is hilarious and happy to have that kind of content in Singapore of all places. But it sort of just doesn't really make it fair. And we know and look even on the extreme a podcast we've spoken to Scott Hawkins in the past who is a deputy race director and was a deputy race director for that Formula One event. We found out a couple of days ago as well, not that we've had a chance to speak to him about it nor probably will we. But it's just an interesting insight, isn't it? Because I think that there's a lot going on for Michael massee. And in that moment, being shouted at by toto wolf isn't necessarily the best thing for him is it? Yeah, I think we can't guess what's going to appear in the recommendations of the report or whatever the report is going to find. We can't preempt the reports findings. I think it's fair to say the FIA will find when anybody investigates itself. Dare I say it is not too cynical to say that they will find that they were mitigating circumstances. If in fact, things were done incorrectly if that's the first point, it's fancy that. And I think one of them will be that the race director has been put under too much pressure by the teams. This is let's not forget Michael Massey still relatively new to the job. I don't think that's an excuse for any kind of behavior. Again, not preempting the report. Still relatively new to the job that really evolved with the man who held it in the past, Charlie Whiting. I thought it was, I thought it was a little bit gross to be totally honest with you the way Christian Horner invoked Charlie white in Saudi Arabia saying the sport misty my aunt, I can understand where he's coming from from heart, I guess, but I think he was really weaponizing that no way that I found kind of uncomfortable. But in that situation, Charlie riding had an authority that I don't think anyone would ever have again in Formula One, because the rule book evolved with him in many senses, he was formed a lot, he was almost the spirit of Formula One. Michael Massey is not that. No one ever will be with a Michael Massey sticks around for longer. He's never going to become that over time. It's just not going to happen. But so as a result, when we have what is, let's not forget the tensors championship we've had arguably ever. Certainly in decades, the pressure being applied by both teams was immense. Him having to deal not only with that with these team principles shouting at him constantly through the race. Combine that with the fact that it was a safety in the end of the Grand Prix we can't forget that the only reason he was a safety car was because there was a safety incident to be responded to. That is primary obligation. All of those stimuli combined with the fact that within 5 laps is going to be a champion decided. It's incredible pressure. You know, that is, that can not be for all the people who will be out there asking for Michael message hit all those kinds of things. There are arguments to be made for it. I completely admit that. But that is, that is a pretty substantial mitigating circumstance. The fact that he was arguably the only two people under more pressure than him with Max Verstappen under his Hamilton that point of the race, I would be inclined to argue. That should probably that will probably be a finding in his report. But then subsequent to that and this is what I think we both want answers to and everyone does is that how did the race director come to conclude that the way the safety car restart was undertaken? Was in line with the rules. I don't really buy the stewards conclusions after the race. I don't think very many people do seem like a pretty ambitious reading of that article. But that is what has to come out of it. Why was that decision made and was it acceptable that it was? It was very interesting listening back to all of the team radios and I did this yesterday with a bit of time that we had. And listening to all of the reactions, of course, Daniel kado being at the very front of the queue of the drivers that weren't allowed to unlap themselves and of course there was Lance stroll in between Carlos Sainz and the ability to obviously get his third position which he did anyway listening to his radio was very interesting because he was like, what's going on? Like literally through the team also had no idea. This was the thing. The safety car will be in this lap, cars will not be unlike themselves, and then suddenly, on Ocasio we unlocking themselves, but only the 5 between Lewis and max. And I think the way that it all transpired so quickly, it just felt like and again, this is the thing if I is here for safety and that's it. It just felt like there was an element of the entertainment side of Formula One in which liberty has done an incredible job in the last couple of years of building that up. Really just into the thought process, it seems of Michael Messi in that moment with everything else for him to say this is what's going to happen..

"But he got him stuck into some good action today. Jas? Yeah, because he had a very disappointing day yesterday. So I guess, you know, he started he started what he started P 7 finished P 7, right? Because Hamilton obviously dropped back. So I think it was good. That is good for him to stay in that position in that off tari is a strong day. And we've seen that, again, more and more so through the season that he's been able to hold those positions and bring home some well deserved points. So yeah, again, really good, really good race. You know, was it battling with Alonso? That was some good racing. I enjoyed I enjoyed that. Once we had a moment to breathe from watching the kinds of guys at the top, we did have those moments also, there should also be their praise moments. So yeah, it was really good. It was strong day from Gaz Lee. Disappointing that he kind of had a good day yesterday because again, he could have been fighting up there with the Ferraris, had he not lost those positions from yesterday. So but yeah, more of that, please go. Love gastly. Luke, I'm going to hand over to you to run down the remaining people that we have not covered because we shamefully just, well, not shamefully, we just enjoyed this race too much. We've got two stuck in to all of the different things. There's been a lot to talk about. There's been so much this could have gone on for another hour, but instead Luke is going to do his fantastic summary for us. Yeah, sorry, it's been a couple of weeks. Yeah, exactly. Deprived us. But yeah, so we've got gazi in 7th that will see very good foul for tower in some of the fight for 5th in the championship. But because Alpine got a double score with ocon and Alonso and 8th and 9th, that meant that there are still tied on points without being ahead because of victory in Hungary. Yeah, good drives from both of them had a really hectic first lap. You see him going wheel to work with both Gaussian and Ricardo at one point as well. So that was, yeah, good little fight there. Alongside yeah P 9 I think again sort of like decent points for Alpine. They were very evenly matched. I think through this weekend. So I think ocon probably in particular needed that that kind of boost. So that's good for them. And Norris, I mentioned in P ten, basically did a one stop race. I think that was a pretty good drive from him. That's all 11th. I think maybe would have wanted to pick up some points or see it start a little bit further up the order after the sprint race, but in the end, yeah, Aston just didn't really seem to have the pace when it came to the race trim of the alpines. He was catching Norris towards the end as Norris's tires worn, but yet couldn't quite get there. Kimi raik and a very good drive from him states go from the pit lanes P 12. Valves he was tagged by juvenile in the sprint race so that meant that Al alpha basically decided we may as well sign from the pit lane instead of last on the grid. They did a lot of setup changes, Kimi said the car was so much nicer to drive, so it was a lot happier with it. And that allowed him to run all the way to P 12. A George Russell 13th Williams a really decent drive. He pitted under the safety car early on, which turned out to be a masterstroke that really, really put him on course for a good racy. Basically one stopped it from there, but that allowed him to get the jump on Latifi who was behind at one point as well. And giovanna see, do you ever actually 14th? I think this is likely to be the last weekend where he does not know about his future. So, well, officially says he does not know about his future. So Italian Jesus will soon be aware of what the plans are. I think. 14th yep, I think again look, I think at one point in quality like he was looking really strong. So I think that alpha will sort of be maybe a little bit disappointed because with Williams like they need points like ASAP and times really running out. So yeah, a cenote 15th that obviously we saw him get caught up with Lance stroll when they went will toilet turn one in the opening stages cenote was over the radio saying that stroll turned in on him. Stewards are very differently in handed snow time penalty. So he served that when he came into the pits, ended up 15th there as a result. La TVP 16 obviously qualified George Russell for the first time ever Williams, which was quite impressive. Race a little more difficult for him though. And Nikita Madden 17th. And he actually had a really good start. I mean, he was running as high as P 14 at one point, and then ultimately the pace of the half just dropped off a little bit. Once he switched to the hard tire, he did struggle more as well. He opened up a little bit this weekend about his I think he's been quite widely spread he was on the verge of tears quite emotional after Friday and he explained like basically he's got quite a challenging period at the moment. A lot of people around the crew around him are all leaving the team, basically, and he said, that's quite difficult as a rookie. It's kind of handled, so he said it's just a case of UK so much, and he said, I don't have anything in my life except F one, so I want this so badly. So it's quite difficult and stuff like that happens. So yeah, and then Mick Schumacher, he propped up the running order and 18th, obviously we saw him lose his front wing as I said on Twitter. It's quite interesting. All the rear wing intrigue and then in the race, it was the front wings that were all coming off, so yeah, so that left him towards the back of the field and ultimately in 18th. Ricotta retired due to a loss of power and Lance stroll, also retired from the race. I can't officially tell you why. I've not actually looked that up, but yes, that's your race run down. I just love it. I just love this feature of the podcast. Thank you. So much like, thank you both for joining me. It's been such a pleasure chatting with you today after it was a fantastic weekend for.

"I've just flipped over the page of scrolled up to the step and dot PNG and Hamilton P and G and I test P and G, but don't look at the rest. I don't want you to look at the race because I just want to say I got a surprise when I learned this. And I want to know if anyone else did or if it was just me because I'm sure I gently scroll. It's going to be a simple question. Where do you think Sebastian Vettel and Lance stroll are in the order and relative to one another? Ah, okay. Thinking about this season overall, okay, we very rarely say Sebastian Vettel and we also very, really see Lance stroll to be fair as well because the team is just generally good. But where do you reckon that's left them now with four races to go. Right. I'm going to suggest by your tone of voice that I should be with regard to where the positioning that stroll is ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Is that what you reckon? Yes. I'll go with that Eddie. And I reckon we're in terms of being vague inside there in the tall. Yeah, just be like. Okay. They're both in the top 20 is a given bus. I would say stroll, I reckon would be, I reckon these 11th and I reckon Sebastian vet would be 13th. Well, you were close, but you were wrong on both. The 12th and 13th. That's not bad. Vettel is a head in 12. Vettel has almost twice as many points as strong. 42 to 26. Wow. When did that happen? I can not. I know you got a podium, but he was also disqualified from a race. So yeah. I can not believe that Vettel has just quietly been accumulating 'cause you get the impression that maybe cause riddle is having an average season by his standards, but he's been having a couple of efforts. Maybe there's a good season by stand. I don't know. But you get the impression that they'd be much closer and that even maybe stroll would be a hair. But absolutely not. Even this year, stroll is getting beaten. So even Esteban icon with 25 points, a big slab of points. He is on 46th errors 42. He finished second or third in that disqualified Grand Prix. So theory, he actually would be either equal if not a head of Esteban icon, which is yeah. That's one that rice. And does it make sense? I don't know. But also impressive. It's very strange. Yeah, that's okay. That's a good quick. I'll give you that one. Everyone else is kind of with her at the close sitting higher than I would have thought, but that's okay. Yes, yes. And he's not that far off Norris. Norris just needs another dot Grand Prix in his bit of Bonnie rubble there. That's a good one. That's a good one. That's a good one. It's a good statistic. It's a good, it's amazing what you'll find when you check the graph on Wikipedia. Yeah, you know they say that shit for you strategy report podcast. Feel free to just pluck it.

"This is a circuit that he's raced on many, many times. He has a lot of experience. And this car seems hooked up. He seems to have got a really good setup in that rebel. And so he looks, he looks quite comfortable. And that sort of like precipitated in having that fastest time in FE two. So all four of them really could be in the mix. Obviously, I'd probably swing in favor of one of the Mercedes getting the fastest time. But we'll have to wait and see. It's definitely going to be between those two big guns if you like. And moving on to the battle for third in the constructor championship, Ferrari were looking quick today where they're both drivers in the top 5 and FP one. Despite a spin for Charles, but then in FB two Lando was a second fastest with Daniel 5th fastest. So the tables turning there a little bit between at the two teams. Ferrari have obviously recently given both their drivers that upgraded package, and it seems to have had a positive impact on the car performance. Can you tell us any more about where those gains have actually come from? Yeah, so one of the things Ferrari's done is it's reconfigured. It's battery within the power unit. And both drivers took new power unit components over the last couple of rounds and Ferraris just sort of seemed to kick on. And having had a look at the long run times towards the end of FB two as well. The two teams Ferrari and McLaren have looked really, really close. Both sort of running in the low, one minute 42s hymen one minute 41s. They look to be on a par. You wouldn't say that the circuit the Americas is one of the circuits that is best suited to the McLaren because, you know, you have the towards the end of the lap, the sort of reverse Turkey Turner if you like, which is sort of 1617, that kind of area. It's not great at those particular corners, and you wouldn't expect the McLaren to be sort of so good at navigating the first section. But that's one of the sort of areas where the Ferrari Ferrari really excels. It just sort of seems to ride those curbs really, really nicely. I say that because science did have a little bit of a moment towards the end of FE two. But they seem very, very evenly matched in the sense that they're producing similar lap times, but their strengths do vary. And so, again, this battle as well, like the Mercedes Red Bull one, this is one that's going to go down to the wire as well. Third place, it doesn't, you know, it seems like a little bit of a consolation prize, but with it comes prize money and all of that kind of thing. And a little bit of bragging rights as well. But yeah, the two teams seem very, very evenly matched. Now, moving further down the pack. It was a tricky day for Fernando Alonso today. So I want to touch on him for a moment in FP one we saw him stopping on track pretty early into the session. It brought out the red flag and then in FB two, he had a spin ended up in the barriers at turn 19. He was able to drive back to the pits, but going back to that first incident in FP one. Do we know any more about what the issue was with his car? We don't quite know what the problem with Alonso was in FE one at the moment. But yeah, it was very tricky day. They did manage to get the Alpine going at the end of the end of the session. So he was able to get some laps on the board. And then, yeah, that's been towards the end of FB two. Just spun it turn 19, which is catching a lot of drivers out. And yeah, sort of when managed to get it sort of rearwards into the barrier and didn't do too much damage. You could just kind of scuff an end play and I'm sure there'll be a few other little bits of ancillary damage that Alpine will have a look at and get fixed up for tomorrow. But yeah, it looked like a very, very tricky day for Alpine. And we'll have to sort of wait and see and see if Alonso is able to shake that off and kick on an FP three and get prepared for qualifying in on Saturday. Yeah, we'll see how things unfold for him tomorrow. But sticking with those at midfield teams for a little while, Alpine Aston Martin alpha towery, Alpine currently leading in the standings on a 104 points with alpha Terry behind on 92 and then Aston Martin trading behind a little on 61, what were your thoughts of their performance today? And how well do you think each team will be suited to this track? It's very, very curious in that battle because one of the things I saw on the F one feed was that alpha towery was the third quickest car according to the the performance indicator. But it didn't really pan out that way. Out of the two teams coming out of FP two Lance stroll was obviously the quickest out of those three midfield teams up in Aston Martin, after touri. Going P 6. I'm going to get a really clean running on the soft tire during the quality Sims. So Aston Martin seems to be relatively at home. You know, obviously, it's a sort of similar design ethos of the Mercedes, so obviously from Mercedes does well, then you would kind of expect us to Martin to have a good run too. Avery looked a little bit at C to be honest with you because Pierre gasly only, you know, we usually expect him in the top ten. He's a fixture in the top 6 in qualifying and he was only 12. In FP two, so yeah, the car didn't look that bad on track. It looked, you know, relatively benign handling. But it just didn't seem to sort of have the pace. An Alpine.

"For all of the things to talk about but yet without a five pounds if a ghastly he potentially could've even better pay full after rat. Yeah he yeah he. He do think he'd been ahead of hamilton He was pretty close even without fighting in the end of the the five-second penalty so now's Print because he had a. We really began it tom. The ask the mind. The next one to talk about vetzel will absolutely be hoping for good results after What was definitely a bit of a wasted weekend deciding to go into some slakes in vary damp conditions Why do you say. Dc him being up to bounce back in that also very inconsistent cop here. He's ordered snow toys. For austin this year as he feels that's a good choice to go onto. Yeah baffling baffling strategy. Really was yeah. He's tends to run pretty well at austin. So i'm hoping he has a has a better race but just the essence just so inconsistent. At the moment they just had a fifth seventh and ninth in the last six races so are twelve inches. Three points finishes. That's not the form of the people you know what's supposed to be so the fastest car on the grid they should be. They should be doing a lot better than that. And lance stroll is is being just just average just hanging around that ten eleven twelve range for the races and ventilate sometimes getting ahead of that but then just throwing it away or just completely disappearing racist so i think i'm really hoping for us to martin sake that they are just they are just shoving development of this car and focusing purely on two thousand nine hundred because if this is them taking the fight to the twenty twenty one season like they were saying that we're going to do and then i fear for them next season because it doesn't seem like it's going in anywhere near the right direction at all. The car doesn't seem to be getting better. Seems to be getting worse..

"Direct tv. Dot com compatible device required. Content varies by package. We're back grain. I've been looking up all kinds of stuff about watkins. Glen during the break cannot believe. I didn't say it just because it's like the one random course name. I know maybe. Next time i appreciate it though. We mentioned it earlier. Currently seven races left on the schedule for f. One this season though. They're keeping a to be announced slot on the docket. Just in case there are any other courses better able to have racist up next on the schedule would get the russian grand prix in sochi on september twenty sixth last year's podium botas verstappen and hamilton. This was the race that hamilton got a couple of five. Second penalties for doing practice starts where he wasn't supposed to do practice. That was a weird one Easy win though for mercedes last year. And i think you said earlier. This is attracted. Generally favors mercedes. Is that the case. I a yes. I believe a since two thousand fourteen. We've been holding this race seven times. I believe mercedes has all seven of the races. They have been incredibly dominant in so g. So i think certainly they'll probably the favorite going into this weekend especially Given how strong. They looked in monza despite shirl the mania that caused them to not win the race. They still looked great. There and i think that will favor them. In sochi that being said if max can win in russia that that truly feels the ushering in the new era for him to win and attract where nobody but mercedes has ever won that that starts to feel like. Oh maybe max is is really gonna make it happen this year. Maybe they got a chance. Reynbolds been doing a lot of things this year that they haven't done in the past so far after the russian grand prix. We've got a couple of weeks off between races. After the singapore and japan grand prix were cancelled due to the pandemic up next after russia the turkish grand prix on october tenth last year's podium lewis hamilton atop first place. Sergio perez finished second for racing point. He was followed at third by sebastian. Vegtable racing for ferrari. This was the race that gave lewis hamilton. His seventh world championship was the first poll for lance stroll last year. It was very cold and rainy. There was lance stroll canadian. Compared it to driving on ice in canada boathouse finished man compared to driving on ice in finland. But i think this was in november last year so maybe not quite as cold. Is this a good race. Generally the turkish grand prix was a fairly new one on a you know they brought it back. I think last year to fill in after we had so many cancellations because it co vid certainly was a great one. Last year was great from beginning to end. Whether was the exciting land straw. Poll all the way down into that. Very last corner where you saw leclair mak- failed to overtake on peres. Have dental slipped by him with just a fraction of the lap left actually steal the podium from his ferrari teammate. At the time it from end to end it was really exciting. Really great hopefully it is again. It's what made it so weird last year is that it was. There was new tarmac recently repainted. It was incredibly smooth. So that combined with the rain made it really crazy I'm interested to see whether bat you know. If in dry conditions it has yet similar effect but certainly last year it was a great show. Let's hope it does again. Yeah the slipstream team is saying. It was race of the year last year. So that could be exciting. I mean you know. Spa was a dud. But the next you were fine and we've still got really close championship between verstappen and hamilton. And then in the constructors as well. There's still much be decided that'll be awesome but feels like a million years from now to be talking about a race in october. In the meantime we've got some other f. One content consume net flicks just dropped their michael schumacher documentary schumacher. This past wednesday to coincide with michael's debut in formula one thirty years ago. The documentary uses archival footage to tell the story of schumacher's rise to prominence his world titles his driving career and his unfortunate ski accident and subsequent brain injury from which he's been recovering since. I cannot wait to watch this graydon. I'm sure you're excited as well. Were you a michael schumacher fan. I would be lying schumacher fan. I came into the sport after him. Although he is a. I will say this as a guy who never watched f. one as a kid growing up or even into my like early twenties. I really only had heard of two individuals. Michael schumacher aired center Right so for the for him to have cut through the noise and to make it to an american ban who wasn't bad sport. I mean i think is somewhat demonstrates his greatness. I seem very cool to hear more about his story in detail and his family. I've see young magsi shots of that. I think will be cool. I'm really looking forward to it. I can't wait. I knows that schumacher's one of the all time greats and for me. I'm kinda like you. My first exposure to formula one period was just hearing the name michael schumacher because he was always like the highest paid athlete in the world and it was mind-blowing to me that there was another michael out there who is more famous than michael jordan. At the time. I was deepen. Sebastian vessels wikipedia the other day and he said growing up. He worshiped the three michael's schumacher jordan and jackson. But he couldn't say he couldn't play basketball so he became a driver great stuff. I cannot wait to watch this. I know these really excited as well. I have to get that guy on to chat about this as well grading. Thank you once again for joining us to talk about fast. Race cars everybody. Please go follow grading on twitter. That's at mr gordian. He ghost wrote a song for drake. Pretty exciting stuff graydon. I don't know this might be the most tweeted and lights tweet of twenty twenty one tweeted drake working onto takubo into a line is going to be tricky. But he'll figure out something and then he did and then he responded to an instagram repulsed of your tweet. Saying i only did this line because of this tweet. Do you have a follow up.

"Definitely would not have predicted that. Certainly and especially after a the way things had gone in the netherlands zanzibar. you know. we're we're danny didn't have an incredible race you know. Neither of them had a great race to be honest. So i i think that they certainly didn't look like danny's fortunes had had flipped quite yet and that being said it made sense that mclaren was very competitive at monza with design of the car with the mercedes engine. I think it was well suited to the track. I wasn't surprised to see them being highly competitive. But certainly i would have presumed that norris would would be on the top step well before danny as i think most anybody. What if any. I'm very impressed if you're if you're the person who call. Yeah if you're that person. You're probably in australia. Likely say and. It's going to be danny rick atop but i was super. Impressed led the entire race as well like he had a great start. He dusted verstappen into the first turn and it was basically over. It was just a matter of pits and hanging onto the end. Pretty great stuff. You mentioned it mclaren. Dropped off quite a bit. That was their first race win since two thousand twelve. How is that possible. you know. I think they really struggled at the beginning of the hybrid. Engine era They've had you know they. They struggled with their old engine partner in honda before honda had moved over to red bull. There was no budgetary issues. There i think they had a lot of organizational changes at the at the at the top of before zac brown come in. So i think there's just a they just had a lot of turmoil inside the organization but they managed to right the ship. You know rebuild the right way You know get great. Drivers put together a great organization. You know back in woking at their headquarters and. I think that it's incredible what they've done. I think it's a script for other teams most notably say williams to follow teams. That are storied great. No they can be great at half defined way back from the very bottom. Mclaren is a great example to follow of how to rebuild an f. one organization and then it's really exciting when you finally do rebuild it and you get daniel ricardo. Being the guy. Who's on the podium as ronald mentions so great to see another. We celebration from daniel ricardo. I one hundred percent agree. Everybody was hoping he was going to do it. He did not disappoint. But it wasn't just daniel ricardo. he also made landau. Norris do a shoe as well landau said he was happy he did it and then he helps. You also never has to do it again. And they even made their team principal. Zac brown do it. I was dying laughing at this. Apparently us just kind of kept it cool and didn't mention that ricardo has never made him do a shoe. Because if you end up on the podium with this guy. He's making you drink out of his shoe. I went on wikipedia. I looked this upgrading. Currently three hundred seventy-one words just about daniel ricardo's formula one shoe he's made verstappen hamilton lance stroll and nico rosberg do it when they were on the podium. He made christian horner do it. He made retired driver mark. Webber do it. He made gerard butler and patrick stewart. Drink out of his shoe if you get up on. The podium with daniel ricardo. You're tasting his feet. There's no doubt about it. Would you like to drink from issue. would i like to get warned. You would offer. Yes absolutely of course. Of course i'm going to do it. I'm getting i'm guy you know. Just i'll try anything once you've learned from danny It sounds like you haven't Excuse me had anything from shoe. What's the grossest thing you have drank from. That's not true. I have drank from shoe. I used to play a little club rugby and did it with a bunch of australian guys after batches. They would absolutely do that. It is awful if you can avoid doing it. It is at all possible. I'll try not to. But i don't know i don't know i know an australian. I can't believe lease never tried to encourage us to drink out of his shoes. Maybe we see. That's that's maybe that's a pick and maybe that's a punishment that's a good pick. 'em payoff do make it. Yeah i love it last couple things about it before we move onto these other races second sprint qualifying of the season at the italian grand prix so on friday we had qualifying sprays qualifying. Valerie voss finished p. One on saturday. I think it ended up being eighteen laps of racing. Botas wins the sprint race. Finishes on pole ends up having to start from the back. Because i think he got a new power unit. Is that right correct. We've seen two of these sprint qualifying races now. Do you like it too in all right. I'm going to admit..

"Like. I couldn't believe that he was that fast. Close taking that angle. It was like the bravest overtake of the whole day. It was terrific and Yeah he had he had second place going around the outside of him that well are blocking radio taking up the inside of a leclair and it's it's on for the something magical about monzo in recent years we've gotten these weird winds right now. Zac brown's wet dream happening. Try peres tries. His luck on the clare at the same place but doesn't have quite the advantage into the chicane and has to bounce over the kerbs to take the position brundle immediately says that he'll have to give the place back and indeed the stewards agree handing peres a five second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. They do this in the sprint. He did he held onto it for like half a lap and back unlike the straight i wanna say and then just like regained. It got the tow and it took a pack. Yeah it was like what is maybe. This podcast is going on. We kind of get into it right now but we should talk about at some stage bush in particular his his weirdness with cutting corners like this has happened a couple of times in races where he's not giving places like this seems pretty cut and dry overseas. You can do it. Take the penalty and it doesn't matter right. that's true. This is not one of those times. Yeah no so mazza pin hit schumacher and spend him around so still happening in the house that that relationship is awesome like can only cool that garages but yeah no perez. I feel like the form hasn't great of late and there's been a bit of bad luck but also i sure am being reminded of the kind of like avoidable miscues that sort of marked his time with Racing point Because like this decision like both in the sprint. And then to push the luck on race day with the cutting the corner and gaining alaska advantage And then like when they give him the penalty horner was like i would have expected the stuarts to let me know it was an issue and michael. We we told you that they should probably consider giving that place back immediately. Right and so kind of avoidable errors. And i don't know i don't know these are pres- decisions or prizes just kind of like getting this corners wrong and the pit walls. Not being forceful enough with them. But like totally and a great example of his lack of a of his prickliness as a number two driver. As it were is unlocked forty-three batas overtaking for points. Like peres isn't isn't banking. The points team needs in a race in which to other drivers out. I will say there's not much you can do. Because this is the thing. Like red bull has a better allow necessarily mean what brought us overtaking him. I think that's going to happen in doing stuff. Like jumping curve on chicane where anything can happen positions. Yeah yeah ju just like just keep it keep it steady. No one forced air is don't get. Don't get a time penalty where you're gonna drop place at the end. Like just like keep keep it steady. He doesn't really quick thing for a brief moment. It was like hey is gonna win this race. But he had to go to the medium tires middle of all this and it was You know examine cutting his hair. You know you just gotta let power on the hearts. But man those those mediums Just sort of washed away in the final of this race. I don't know that anybody could have done to catch those mclaren's given how much time was less than how long it took him to clear. Peres but the mediums definitely did mark the end of his charge through the field. Yeah he does get by leclair with a decisive move around the outside of turn one after coming down. Start finish straight. But that's kind of it for his tires so the the the questions come down to well mclaren let norris who is faster by ricardo. Norris even comes over the radio asking like is this really. What's best for the team. They're like yes. Don't do anything stupid. And if that's the case if norris does hold station behind the slower ricardo will. He be compromised by peres or depot. Toss if bo can get by peres in the end though. Ricardo and norris fend off everyone. Botas stays within five seconds of paris. Take third place. Meaning ricardo wins his first grand prix. Since monaco two thousand eighteen he was with red bull and mclaren get their first win since twenty twelve. Is that right. Yeah how incredible redemptive ark. For both of them ricardo of course having jumped ship from red bull and mclaren having untold troubles with honda and renault engines and incredible podium daniel ricardo landau norris and valkyrie botas. Voiding shui at all costs once again. He's a pro shui avoid. He really is behind them just off the podium charlotte clare in fourth. Good race from him. Sergio perez and and carlos signs in sixth. I'm sure the ferraris would want to do much better at at monza. Certainly much better than the mclarens who. They are racing for third in the constructors championship. But still i guess. All things considered not a bad run lance stroll in seventh alonzo an eighth george russell and ninth esteban okon in tenth. And we've got nicholas latifi. Sebastian federal antonio juvenile robert commits a mic schumacher and then the not classifieds nikitas pin lewis hamilton mattress tap and gasoline and yuki sonoda also ricardo scored the fastest lap. Yeah also latifi was Qualified had russell. For the first time. Ever i believe and was in the points for most of this race until time caught up with the williams and also george russell. Yes and that was monza. Boy we are. We're getting late in the game here. So let's just jump right into news showy. We've got some more driver. Confirmations as mentioned as rumored alabama confirmed in at williams Will pair nicholas latifi next year. that also probably staying with esten martin The i think lawrence stroll has said like. Yeah we want federal so. We hope to sign him quickly. I guess that'll hold that for something. Don't really know what's up with that. The only one we have not yet confirmed is Nazi each kind of the one up in the air i think mc schumacher also has not been technically confirmed but we expect that to To also confirmed also. I wanted to point out that. I was wrong about russell's contract being one year. I didn't see any confirmations one way or the other so i just assumed it was one year but i i saw somewhere else that it was a long term contract. Okay these things are always kind of slippery so question marks but but it has not been definitively said that it is a one year does remind me one thing. Botas seems relaxed. Now that the uncertainty has lifted last couple races. And i do wonder like getting a multi year contract for change revenue. Doing this one year one year. One year thing with mercedes Does just the stability that he has to alpha Like load off than he expected are like the last weeks of your job. You don't get shit. I ever seen like beat like being afraid you're gonna fired. You're going to be fired bad knowing you ben fired but you gotta serve out of contract great rob you wanna give us a quick version of what you found about Aston martin here So they're building a massive new facility If you go back and you listen to beyond the grid that they had with half an hour like two years ago They were in the old jordan grand prix like facility and sapphire apparently like interviewed for a job in that building like twenty year. Twenty thirty years ago But that also means it was an antique It was like jordan was never a really like top-flight operation.

"Races I've ever seen in form of the one weird, because for, for many reasons. First of all map, one that reboot. Mercedes driver crashed, you took out both Red Bulls. The session got stopped Max. First happens car for red bull attack. Damaged here. 1 2 3 4 5 6 drivers did not finish the race. Lando Norris Sergio Perez. Lance stroll, Charles Le Claire about your Botox himself and of course Ben. What's it Nikita mazepin? That's his actual name. Hate that guy. Just what a weird race. So how do we? What are you begin here? First of all, there's light rain early on in the race, they read they, they red flagged the session they stopped after a while. Everyone had to restart. They tried to, like, literally rebuild Max first happens car, he had no downforce could barely pass mix. Schumaker, literally took him like 30, freaking laps to pass mix Schumaker and that's kind of one of the weirdest parts of this race is that, you know, Lewis Hamilton was in first going into the race restart app. So they did a formation lap and Lewis. Hamilton goes to the start cuz he's in first month. And every other driver went into pit Lane to change their tires, because they realize detractors way drier than we thought. So that put Lewis Hamilton a massive disadvantage. Had to go all the way around the track before he could pit. He put a new tire set. Put Louise Fulton in last place in the races at 14th position. Max's happened was in 12th now Max. Sorry, Lewis Hamilton. It was really my favorite part of this race. Was it, Lewis Hamilton? Just drove through the whole pack, slowly passing people overtake after overtake after overtake month ended up getting well third-place. Then second here is another reason why this race was incredibly weird and I'm not going to make this into a full break out just going to make it part of the podcast. You know, Sebastian Vettel second place in this race and got disqualified. I'm going to read you. The reason it's, it's the weirdest reason I've ever heard for a disqualification. Basically the real-life birds are unable to take the required amount of fuel for sampling following the race. So they needed one liter then they got zero point three litres from his car and it sounds unbelievable. They actually founded his car because Aston Martin is challenging and appealing what happened there saying, hey, there's still like should be over a litre of fuel in the car through the all of the pipes and off. The the system. So it should be possible to get that much feel out there. They're furious. And I I thought maybe be resolved by now, but remember, form of the one is on Hiatus. They have a break. The next race isn't until August 29th because they're on summer break. So, I don't know when it's going to get resolved. I thought that Sebastian Vettel should have legitimately gotten second in the race. I seems like a weird BS nonsensical reason to take away from him and just just very weird. Now, I want to talk about estimate akhon, because estimate okan be got sick, I got first place in the race partially cuz everybody crashed partially. Because when that happened he took over and Luis had to go to the back of the pack and you held on and there are two heroes in all of this. Number one is Esperanto cons parents..

"Landowners and sort of followed by batas crash into the side of her stopping than batas follows through and hit peres and poor. Pierre goslin writing his own business around the outside i think he notices the lockup by vodka contact with landau and he dives down further into the runoff area to basically get around us but then has to continue doing so because all of these cars that are flying pasta so his. He's basically gone from a fantastic six position that was on the grades to to being last. Meanwhile the crash aren't over london. Our lance stroll has also had a bit of a warbler breaks and also goes over the grass to sort of that at t-bone charlotte clara basically rides up the side of his car diner. Ricardo thinks he's in second place because all the cars in front of them have crashed and just as he's exiting turn one gets hit by charles mcclair twice so now he's gone from thinking he's he's He's in second position to spinning around. And then you have s. alcon who is sort of a no-man's-land on the gridlock is suddenly the car. Who's in first position followed by a bunch of other cars. Some of which have wings coming off some of which are trying to get back up to speed By the time basically shuffled to turn three We have a safety car followed quickly by a red flag. yes as you said oh con and And metal actually who ends up right behind. Him both took their time with the start. And as a result were back far enough to dodge the malay so they they really benefited fedel. Maybe did not intentionally take take it easy. But he also had a poor start but yes those guys avoided the carnage. But out of this race now are botas norris peres stroll and leclair leclair. Incidentally his engine will need to be replaced. This'll be his third so he will dodge a penalty but anything further in the season. I will just like i mentioned before for staffing and ten place grid penalty for stopping has somehow survived this malet but his car is i think the barge board came off entirely. Yes so he. The red flag is good for verstappen. Because they'll get to repair it. And this is just like hamilton and silverstone. He would not have been able to continue if not for this red flag but yet his the right barge board which is just behind. It's all like crazy. Aerodynamic stuff right behind the front tire that's coming up out of the floor and it looks nuts but contributes a lot to the downforce. It's basically gone. They actually have to tape and sand down a lot of the jagged edges of that and the floor because they don't want further damage to propagate through it but apparently most of the focus of the repairs on the cooling pipes in the side pot. Oh wow okay So that didn't replace any of those. Aerodynamic elements basically just like they. They straightened some pipes and replace the cover of the side pod. There is a photo on instagram of for scar after the race and and it is very obvious that they're supposed to be a lot more car there. I'll put that in the show notes but yeah everyone comes in to the pits in this order. Hamilton having you know got away clean in the front and escaped all of this then okon in second federal in third signs soon. Noda latifi alonzo russell reichen schumacher in tenth. Then ghastly having yet dod had to go basically into another county to avoid all that stuff. In eleventh ricardo verstappen made it back in thirteenth then. Massive open and g-o-v nazi so just to set up the restart here which we get after not too long a delay. Everybody leaves the pits on intermediate tyres because the track is semi wet. But it looks like it's drying so the teams decide to send their drivers out for for formation lap. And just have them make the call to to pit they're they're relaying information to their teams It's important to note that during a normal formation lap before the start of race it is not allowed for the pit wall to tell the driver to do anything It's a rule to ensure that the driver alone is driving the car so nothing about clutch. Bite points for the start. Nothing about pitting for tires. They added the new rule. That one is. I feel like it's only three years old or something Allow contact them in only in cases of like safety.

"The question is can they hang on can they keep their crown and stay the third best team? In fact the one now, the biggest Challenger for third is going to be Aston Martin in my opinion last year. Aston Martin was known as racing point. They rebranded they got a new name. They've got new driver Sebastian Vettel and they almost got third last year in 2020. But in the final race, they just they choked. I mean, I can't think of another way. You know Sergio Perez's car off did not finish it choked and it's it's like a moment where a man like this was a team that got so close and then could not finish at the end. It's unfortunate. I feel bad for them. But you gotta earn it. And so the two drivers were asked in Barney at 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel and then Lance stroll and stroll is the son of the team owner Lawrence stroll Lance is mostly there because of his dead. It's pretty clear. Like he if Lawrence stroll was not the owner of the team there would be no Lance stroll but to his credit unlike most people who he's basically a gentleman driver. I will say Lance stroll has some talent. I mean he got a he was on Pole Position last year in turkey and that doesn't happen by accident. He has some Talent as a driver even if he's not the most talented on the grid. I also got to say Aston Martin's got a really cool like green shiny Livery looks awesome. I'm excited to watch that car in action. I think just from visual standpoint. It looks super super cool off and I think that Aston Martin in general, they're trying to elevate themselves. They've got they're bringing it. They're working on new facilities. They are building a new age Q. They've got a ton of money invested from Lawrence stroll now mm questions about acid Martin or this. And they get third can they make a legitimate push and steal third from McLaren and then will there engine be reliable last year? They had reliability problems in testing that reliability problems and it really doesn't matter how fast you are if your car isn't running so I'm excited watching Aston Martin Gaston Martin's awesome. The question is can they legitimately challenge McLaren this year in 2020 and steal the crown and get third and F1. That leaves me to Alpine, it's not Alpine. It's spelled like Alpine it from America you like the Alpine F1 team? No, no, no. No. No, I watched the video. They clarified many times. It's pronounced Alpine. It's a team that was formerly known as Renault F1 the rebranded with the new name. They've got a new livery with the colors of the rainbow flag..

"I'm new to F1 my first month following F1 religiously. I don't know if Abu Dhabi is always a boring track maybe the track layout lends itself to a boring race. That's not very good. I don't know but I will say there's also an inherent flaw with F1 wage. I don't know that it's like this world shattering awful thing. It's just a it's a thing that you can't really solve as the built into the way. The leak works is you always are going to have an anti-climactic ending. I mean, although I will say if there's ever racing comes down to the season that comes down to the final race. I think that'd be amazing. I bet it's happened before. Would have been so cool. Like this race had huge implications. It didn't because you got a point scoring system. And so Lewis Hamilton won a long time ago and a couple of weeks ago Mercedes one. So, we we knew took one the drivers championship and the Constructors Championship weeks ago now in this race and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Sergio, Perez had engine trouble had to retire early meaning he did not finish the race. So raising points hopes to get third in F1 relied on Lance stroll and Lance stroll could not deliver by the way. It's not a surprise if I were racing going to go off, okay. All of your hopes to get a Podium finish in the Constructors Championship to get third. I don't think of a Podium that and I've no idea but to get third all your hopes rely rely on Lance shovel. I'd go dang it. We lost and they did Landon or Scott V Carlos Sainz got sick so that gave McLaren 18 points on the day. They leapfrogged racing Point Lance stroll finished and that gave racing what one point on the year. So in the constructors got Mercedes got first. They had 573 points Red Bull got second with 319 points and June 3rd was McLaren with 202 points and right behind them and forth. Was racing point of 195 points rented was V hundred eighty-one. I was really all that happened. The only interesting thing that happened in this race. Was that McLaren LeapFrog Gracepoint. Otherwise the top three did not change the entire race of stayed the same and it will say as I reflect on F1, like I love the driver's I love the the technical terms. I love the game but might I want to give a shout out to one of the things I think is often overlooked by people that are not new to F1. So if you happen to have one fan for a long time, you take a lot of stuff. I'm about to say for granted. I would imagine I'm coming with an American perspective and watching football and baseball and the NBA my whole life. And what one thing I love about F1 is that the broadcasters are always the same and by the way, they're always great. I mean you watch an NFL game, you're never listening to the same broadcasters week to week unless you watch my life a couple of prime-time games. And even then it's you know, Sunday Night Football is their guys on fox says they are guy and ESPN. Is there a couple of guys and so listening to F1 get in the consistent same broadcast off every week makes me so happy and actually love them the British accents. It's so good and works really really well. The music is awesome. There are great graphics. There's no commercial breaks like them American Sports So you you're getting commercials with you know, the the team names and the stuff on their jackets and hats and everything, but there's no breaks from the race and I love that. There's different countries and different locations. You see these beautiful landscapes like the outs and the mountains and beaches and now my God, it's so cool. I love I love that aspect of F-16. It's an amazing spectacle really.

"A three point one second Pitstop Mercedes was actually kind of sloppy in the pit Lane in my opinion but their car pays just so far superior to Red Bull. It didn't matter. I just wished that those little things that Red Bull does right were actually things that had an impact on the race because they do the little things right and still are nowhere near Mercedes. That's so dominant Lewis. Hamilton is with Mercedes home because their car pace is crazy now valtteri bottas did have a Another Bad start in Spain. He had another bad to earlier where he kind of that falls start. I believe it was off steering. I don't remember which Grand Prix it was he had a false start in one of the Races they decided not to penalize him cuz doctor Bob. Just had has had a weird time struggling to start races this year. We're off on turn when he got passed by not only Max verstappen. He also gave an opening to Lance stroll to get on the right of him and get inside go around him. So it's not the first time this year and it's maybe not the last name. Botas has been infected been impacted by his start on the race and it really made it. So he constantly had to chase and try to get back into position. That's why Max was happened got page two and on file TurboTax got P3 aside from Payson Central mother things now, I'm sure that Mercedes is still happy without dribbled us. He keeps getting podiums are actually probably quietly. Thankful that hey like if your if Mercedes looking about your Botox you like. Well your scores a lot of points. He gets podiums quite frequently and also as a benefit but he's not as good. He actually quite effectively stays out of the way of Lewis Hamilton. Yes Mercedes is probably not as dominant. If as if they had a better driver but a better driver would get in the way is Hamilton and cause problems and so maybe very quietly behind the scenes Mercedes is breathing a sigh of relief going. We got a perfect just the right amount of good. He's good enough to get podiums. Yep. Not good enough to get in the way Lewis Hamilton. Thank goodness..

"He wants to win and I think he's willing to sacrifice his team to try and get a victory over Iraq. Now, I think that's stupid and I might be wrong there cuz if you do the math way getting second, you know, you're getting eighteen last week. You're right. You're a key made didn't get any points and drivers standing so you could do 5 or just finishing second if that's what happens, but I don't believe the race there in Lewis Hamilton. I don't think it's going to let him just stay behind valtteri bottas the entire time. So I am I'm rooting for Nico hulkenberg. I hope he gets a Podium as a storyline. I want however, I will be clear. I'm not hopeful that's going to happen and maybe it's because I try to guard my heart but if the Mercedes don't run into each other and if Max were stabbed and finishes the race at all for Red Bull, then it's very unlikely in my opinion that Nico hulkenberg is going to get down to business. You got Ball Toss. You got Lewis Hamilton, you have Max verstappen. All of them are to good erasers into good at cars to not grab a Podium finish. I don't know how Nicolas Berg breaks into the top three over all three of those guys. Assuming nothing goes wrong. Now there are also other storylines Nico hulkenberg is not the only story line even though to me. It's the most impactful most interesting storyline in this weekend. Alex album. Next worst happens. Team-mate Red Bull has been dead really inconsistent this year. And in fact, you know qualifying yesterday Alpha Tower the other Red Bull team had Peter ghastly, you know finish in seventh. He started at 7 tomorrow in the race and it's very interesting that last year. Cassie was really struggling is Max verstappen his teammate. He got replaced mid-year by Alex Alban. Now the same things happening Alex Alban, he's struggling a beer ghastly seems to be doing better. They're both controlled by Red Bull. Maybe Red Bull says, hey Alex, if you're not doing good. We're going to replace you with your ghastly. I don't know what the pressure was on Alex Alvin this weekend. He starts in P 9 a week, and I'm curious to see how he does. There's also the battle in the constructors cut between McLaren Ferrari Renault and racing point. They are all battling for either third place or best of the rest two of them are two of those teams are probably going to get two of them are going to miss out and it's going to be really fun see how the results play out this weekend. There's other you know, the other question is what's going to happen to Lance stroll. The other racing Point driver issue gets shown up by Nico hulkenberg this week is Nico hulkenberg gonna make it clear. He is a much better racer than Lance stroll and maybe going to prove that Lance stroll is only they're not he's already clearly there cuz of his dad, but she going to get shown up by the other driver on his own team. That's what I want to watch from Landstuhl tomorrow. How does he handle? Being on the same team is Nico hulkenberg. And then how about the Ferrari entertained competition between Sebastian Vettel and shower LeClaire, you know, the vet has really been struggling recently A lot of it has been car issues..
