Yeah, and if you don't believe it after talking with Philly's people, you would believe it after talking with Red Sox players because they really miss him and they were disappointed that he was not brought back. All right, Lance mccullers last night first pitcher in World Series history to give up 5 homers in one game. What's your take on what happened last night? Well, you talked about it at he talked about it just talked about it. He just doesn't throw fastballs to left handed batters. And it felt, I'm not sure. I don't think there was a tipping thing. I think it was more a game plan and thing. A combination of a game plan thing. And I went back and looked at the 5 home run pitches this morning. Two of the breaking balls were just hangers, like right over the middle of the plate, the one to Harper was just up and right out over the plate. And I think the Phillies were kind of sitting breaking ball whether it was slider or curveball. There's only about a two three mile an hour difference between a slider and curveball. It's not like they're tremendously distinctly different pitches like a lot of guys have. And he made mistakes to guys who can hit the ball out of the ballpark. You know, a lot was made of Harper whispering in bones ear. I'm not sure he was saying, you know, the leg kicks a little bit higher. Harper saw one pitch. One pitch. So I'm not sure there was any tipping conversation. If you said to me that what Harper said to bohm was just nod your head, we're going to make it look like I'm telling you he's tipping pitches, but just nod your head. It'll get in his head and bones just go, that wouldn't surprise me. I think the Phillies might have just had a really good game plan and we're playing some mind games a little bit with mccullers. And I give him a colors a lot of credit. He stood at his locker after the game and answered question after question and said, I got beat. I didn't make good pitches. I think it was a good game plan by the Phillies, some mistakes by mccullers and the Phillies do what they do pretty well, which is take advantage of mistakes and hit the ball out of the ballpark. Yeah, I agree with you when Bryce Harper is a sort who would play 3D chess like that. 'cause he's bad cameras on him since he was about 13 years old. So he knows the potential impact of that and some numbers to back up what you're talking about in this postseason Lance mccullers is around a 109 pitches to left handed hitters and among those he'd thrown two fastballs, two out of a 109 pitches last night, left handed headers, 35 pitches, one swing and miss three homers and Dan the way I was thinking about it after I got back to the hotel room last night. It's almost as if, you know, Lance mccullers were an offensive coordinator who's calling a run play on every single play. Like at some point, it doesn't matter what misdirections you might do or whether there was something that was telling if you know it's going to be a run play. If you know that he's not going to throw you a fastball, Boyd is that narrow it down and you're right about the speed variation of his pitches at the low end is curveballs 83 miles an hour, his fastball is 93. And everything else that change up the slider, that's all in between there, which makes it really easy for professional hitter to narrow it down if he knows there's going to be a run play every single time. Here's the funny part. Lefties only get one 70 against him during the regular season. Like he obviously located and executed better against left handed batteries during the regular season, then he did last night. But with all the analytics that all the teams have to look at the fact that he only threw two fastballs to left handed batters and however many pitches it was that you said, like that's an easy one, right? That's an easy thing to find. There are tougher things to find when you do the digging. And the Phillies, they don't have kids, like schwarber, Hoskins, real Harper. Look at that top four. You know, going into the postseason concerns about their bullpen. What will they get at the bottom of the order? What about the back end of the rotation? All valid things at that point. But one through four, schwarber Hoskins real mutual Harper, that could stand up with any top four in baseball. They've got power. They take walks. They're all veteran guys. They all have at least 6 years at least 6 years in the majors, some of them have 9 or ten years in the majors. They're smart. They know what they're doing up there.

"After the game, Lance mccullers made himself available to reporters. And I got to say, in the long-standing tradition of pitchers who have rough games and have to answer questions about it, Lance mccullers stood up and answered every question from reporters. At one point, I've heard this from a number of folks a media relations person was telling reporters last question and Lance basically ignored that and just kept answering questions and being accountable and standing there and basically addressing everything that reporters had for. This was Lance mccullers talking about the whole question whether or not he was tipping pitches and how he throw. I got beat, man, you know? They had a lot of solid pitches I thought. But you know, at the end of the day, you know, we got to be pretty bad, and I got beat up pretty bad. So, you know, obviously wanted to pitch well and pitch much better than I did, but at the end of the day, you know, all I can do at this point is get ready to go for a potential games up. Do you like they were sitting? They just had good at bats, you know? I mean, I felt like I made some adjustments and went on a little bit of a decent run there toward the middle of the game. And then obviously, you know, they hit the two homers to before I got taken out. So this is a game of adjustments and they're a good team. I've said that before. And I'll be today. We're going to be thinking on any level you were maybe tipping your pictures of all over the conversation that Parker had before a home run decision. I think guys have conversations all the time, you know, before at bats and for innings and things like that. So I'm not going to sit here and say anything like that. I got what in the story. I wonder now that the World Series has concluded and Major League Baseball is done for the year if it will become easier or harder to remember what day of the week it is because the rush of work and just all the craziness of October and the beginning part of November here often makes it hard to triangulate where one is in space and time, but I don't know that it'll get easier once we start lacking the daily events that might otherwise orient us. I think that the playoff schedule has a greater impact on you. Yes. Because the editorial calendar shifts, you don't have, you don't have a weekend anymore. Absolutely throughout the playoffs. I was going to save this till the end of the pod. But you having moved down here to Arizona and like me getting to see you do this stretch of your job like in person for a bunch of the month like, it's pretty amazing. I do not envy your job ever ever, but especially not this month. And so thank you for doing that for the site. It's pretty amazing people who are listening to this and read stuff at the site like in addition to their being time sensitive content on basically a daily basis that may has to edit she dealt with her podcast co host going on, paternity leave for this month and handle all of the admin stuff related to doing this podcast as well as juggling the site and like top 50 free agent stuff is on the horizon and knowing that like prospect list stuff is coming down the pipe. Yeah. So you did a good job. Thanks for doing the stuff that you do for the site. You only did like 20% of it with your 30 grade Trevor got joke right before we started. Recording this Trevor got joked that you felt like 30,000 people needed to see on Twitter. It was really important. I think judgment all over again. It was an important barometer of where my mental state is and how many awake brain cells I have. Well, it's very nice of you to say that I want to take time to recognize on both of those scores the very, very good work that John Taylor and Dylan Higgins did to assist with editing the site and keeping the pod on track and Dylan, you know, gamely offering to stitch everything together in a way that he did not have to regularly do for bed. So, you know, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention those two guys in really everyone who writes for the site because having good having good content on deadline is the thing that we are capable of, but it's not a muscle that we have to flex nearly as often as obviously beat writers do. And it can take a little while to get into the swing and everyone I thought did a really excellent job this month. So, you know, I am tired and it was a lot of work, but I was hardly the only one to work a bunch in it. I ended up getting a couple of Friday evenings off because John was nice and I say, wow, why don't you let me out of that gamer tonight? And then I would go to bed at like 9 30. There's great. So takes a team, takes a whole team to do. We are going to chat about the World Series that just concluded, as I mentioned, it is the morning is Wednesday morning. So the Atlanta Braves are in our World Series champions and then as we start to shift into off season content, I thought we would chat about the fall league and how that has gone for you so far and also lead them. And I guess before we talk about general. Yeah, winter ball generally. I guess before we talk about the World Series, one thing to just note for folks who are interested in winter ball in the Dominican and how that is going. My understanding is that if you had a postseason package for MLB TV like you're just gonna be able to watch those games on MLB TV for the rest of the season here. And if for some reason that is not a thing that you've purchased in the past, I'm pretty sure you can stream directly from lido. So if you are hankering for baseball and you know, worried you're going to miss out until the spring. It's a good reminder. There's fun winter ball to watch, and you get the local commercials, which is not all of the fun, but at least 5% of the fun when it comes to let them, so there's that bit, but we should talk about the World Series, which has concluded. And I guess the last time you were on effectively wild was right before full league opening day. So we were into playoff baseball, but not very far in. And so now I get to ask you about some of the hot topics of the postseason that you have not yet rendered an effectively wild opinion on yet anyhow. And I guess that we can start by having me ask how you thought both of these teams ended up managing a pretty unenviable starting pitching situation as they entered the World Series. The Astros were obviously without Lance mccullers, and Atlanta lost Charlie Morton to the broken leg in game one, so they were kind of having to stitch together a starting pitching offering and I'm curious what grades you'd give them in terms of how well they did. Yeah, like, I think this is just the reality of postseason baseball generally that we're likely to see pitcher usage akin to what we saw the last couple of years pretty consistently. I think there's a chance that obviously last year was super weird. Given the stop and start and what that did to everyone's pitching and then this year coming off of a shortened season, the repercussions on the injury side that team suffered during the course of the summer and then into the postseason like all that stuff maybe is at play in a special unique way related to the couple seasons that we've just had back to back, but I tend to think that this is just the reality that we will see because of the quality of the offense in the postseason, you're just going to see framber Valdez type guys have one dandy start and then the rest of the time have like three inning outings. Like that's just part of the reality is that the offenses are so good that you're likely to have attrition in terms of your pitchers ability to deceive more quickly and that this is just what it's going to be like. I don't know, like everyone is just sort of put in the position that they are in, you can see, I think that teams who had depth either because they targeted it in free agency or had the prospects to handle it. That's just how they backfilled behind Charlie Morton getting hurt and lantern. I was getting hurt and Justin Verlander being hurt. And Mike soroka being hurt. It's not just a single month window. Right. That these teams are adjusting to the reality of pitchers, which is that they tend to get hurt and or perform poorly for like no apparent reasons evenly. So good on the braves in addition to dealing with Morton, Ian Anderson was hurt for a pretty sizable chunk of the season and his stuff is just not as good as it was before he was hurt. Hue scary Noah went down in the playoffs too. You know, like the fact that Tucker Davidson just kind of got thrust into it that Dylan Lee just kind of got thrust into it. None of it really worked. Those guys didn't do well. And the braves still won anyway. So, you know, on one hand, looking at the braves as a champion makes me think that, you know, in terms of the overall talent quality of the team, they're on the lower end of the spectrum of World Series teams. But also they just won a World Series without their best player, which is pretty amazing..

"Back the radio play by play voice of the Red Sox, the one and only will Fleming, you can follow him on Twitter at will Fleming all one word. Will it was a great, I would say unexpectedly terrific season for the 2021 Red Sox. Of course, they fall short in the American League championship series, four games to two. A roller coaster ride to say the very least after games two and three went in the Red Sox way and unprecedented fashion. Games three, four, sorry, games four, 5 and 6, the tables were turned. I thought will the turning point of the series was a game tying home run by Jose Altuve in game four when the Red Sox were up two one. Yeah, I think it's hard to make that argument against that migrate to be with you again. Thank you. Roller coaster is the perfect word for this season in so many ways. I mean, we're just all sort of taking a deep breath and looking back at it and I think it, you know, it extends beyond just the last four or 5 days when the Red Sox did have a real opportunity to get to the World Series. And it's crazy that we're not at Fenway Park tonight welcoming the Atlanta Braves. That would have been pretty wild culmination to just an insane 2021 season. But, you know, I think that the Astros on paper is certainly a better team than the Red Sox are. The stock's offense got hot for a couple of games. And without Lance mccullers, I thought the Red Sox had a really good chance. And you make the right point, which is you can easily say that the Red Sox could have swept the series in game one you got Tanner hulk on the mound with the two run lead. He gives up a Homer to about two of it and then in game four the same story of carrot winlock. And Garrett whitlock was the Red Sox best pitcher this year other than native Aldi. And so question. It's hard to argue with the setup that they had. And by the way, you know, I'm sure we'll talk about I'll explore in this podcast, but it's a marvel that he was able to navigate the Red Sox to that spot. To have them in a situation in those games with their best guys on the mound with a lead. And sometimes it just doesn't work out. And Altuve and Correa are two of the great all time playoff performers and they got the Red Sox in those couple of moments. So, you know, it stings to not keep going, but what a year it was for the Red Sox and by almost any measure they exceeded expectations and took us all on a wonderful ride. Now, you bring up will Fleming, Alex Cora, I think he is certainly in the conversation for American League manager of the year. I don't think there's any doubt about that considering where the experts had picked this team..

"I don't think there's anything even really talk about here, but before we dive in, I'll obviously ask you how you feel as well. We can talk it out. We can add the debate. But Lance mccullers junior sounded like somebody who's gonna pitch in this series after Tuesday's game four. To be fair. But he was scratched with forearm tightness. He's the Astros best pitcher at this moment without him, the Red Sox road to the 2021 World Series could be through Shane bars, drew Rasmussen, Colin McHugh, Jose or kitty, Jose Garcia, framber Valdez, a Christian Javier Zach Greinke hybrid. What the fuck is that? It's insane. It's absolutely, and the way that Greinke's last month of the season unfolded. He was on the cover of all he came back and made two starts, then went back on the IO and then was only able to throw a bullpen ses because it was the end of the year. So he's probably not going to be able to fill him into the rotation. And if he does, I don't see him going like four inning seems like his max at this point. So the Red Sox if the colors is out, the updates don't sound bad. I think the coaching staff weighed in on it yesterday and think that he should be fine. But getting a forearm tightness to diagnosis right before the ALCS is supposed to begin on Friday is just classic bullshit Red Sox look. And this is why this team pisses me off because like we talked like I talked about on the last episode, hilarious. Absolutely fucking hilarious how the Yankees run into the race. Look, the Yankees should have got the job done against the rays last year. I'm not making any excuses. Blake snells on that good. But no, but they had Blake's now. They had Charlie Morton. They had Tyler glass now. I know they battered Tyler glass now. I know they they handle Blake Snell too at some point. But that was and then the race had a beast bullpen that year too. So if you have pictures that can actually give you length and then you have a bullpen behind it, that's worth something. That can at least be competitive. The Yankees when faced with competitive situations usually lie down. So the Yankees get that version of the raise. And then the Red Sox get this version of the raise, which, yeah, a 120 very good, but starting rookies in games one and two, and then a hybrid pitcher and game three and then Colin McHugh and other hybrid pitcher in game four, like give me a break. I'm never gonna forgive Brandon Lau, either. Like we can't over 18 but 9 strikeouts in the LDS and he beat the shit out of us with three home runs in like ten RBIs in the final fucking series of the season. This is what we're complaining about. The Red Sox are not as good as the raised, but the Red Sox didn't get the raise. They got Brandon low getting no hits in a four game series..

But yeah, why does all this weird stuff happen in October? Now this play October weird stuff happens and we just don't want it to decide games 'cause one game can decide a series. So hopefully everything is a little more normal moving forward. All right, the only thing more predictable in a game 5 between the Dodgers and giants is that there was going to be a battle of some kind of war between Tony larissa and dusty baker. I told him la Russa saying that the Astros through Jose Abreu on purpose. Let's set that aside for a second. I really felt like that that conversation you have to get really took away how great all these long-standing Astros were. Carlos Correa was awesome in this series. Bregman held two way Lance mccullers. I just loved how these guys stepped up in this series. Yeah, look, the critics are still going to be out there. I got a text from my brother in law, who's a Yankees fan. Saying, I'm not gonna watch baseball after this. The rest of the playoffs 'cause he still mad at the Astros. But they played great Altuve, 9 runs in this series. Are you kidding? He's on fire. He's locked in. And yeah, look, you know, you're going to play some sound here, but they were not thrown at Jose Altuve. And we get it, larussa baker. Obviously, their rivalry goes back, especially when dusty was managing the reds and Tony was still with St. Louis. They had a lot of spats, but yeah, it was a blowout. You know, one game, Chicago one, Houston blow them out otherwise. Yeah, Lance mccullers, junior, I mean, he's demonstrated time and time and time again that he is a big game pitcher. Not only that if you look at his entire professional career dating back to two thousand ten as a member of the washington nationals. You're looking at the two point. Two three case for ninety has we're talking about that as seriously more than a full walk per nine innings lower than he's had in any of the of the other professional seasons he's got a six point three percent walk rate x nearly two percent beneath almost any other stoppings ad for any period of time in the whole pro career and we mentioned on the show before not. Probably, I think Scherzer probably would have went for somewhere between 75 to $90. Had he been thrown back, but it's a lot of money to tie up and like you could have added four other players that where the utility of those dollars spent would have been greater than spending all that on Scherzer. Now that being said, rob is someone who I think struggles a lot with pitching, you know, just trying to identify that towel and keep it year to year. I think you got really lucky on severino, but severino got hurt, right? Like the year that he got severino and he broke out, going into that season, people thought submarino was going to end up in the bullpen because he was so fucking skinny. And he ended up having a near Cy Young type of season and rob ended up being the beneficiary of that. So yeah, I think this was a trade that vandy basically wins because he got something back for Scherzer frankly. And it was more than like ten bucks. Right. Yeah, exactly. I mean, that's a legit second outfielder. For 27 bucks, if that's how he wants to go out spending it. So if I were a rob, I would probably look to liquidate, frankly, Max Scherzer right after the auction and try to get three or four qualities starting pitchers. Rather than just go with Scherzer is the one. 21 points a week is only going to carry you so far. And knowing the amount of sway Sean Kerry's the lead, I probably will happen. Maybe, I don't know.
