"Awesome mcenroe look baller. I thought i was joking. I mean it was it was it was swollen so at that point it was tough. You know you play all year you care an off season and win- situation get back there and not being able to help your team and was that was a tough time for me. 'cause i couldn't couldn't throw the ball by being left in i couldn't drive. The ball couldn't throw the ball so you know it was just a tough just to just to have to be there. Just watch it to play. You couldn't be a part of it. I think that year was was was was a tough year for me. That's why ninety seven. I came back. I think i can't back probably about a month or two before. They expect me to come back. Because i was so determined. Tried to give back to the back to the you know right and so you come back ninety seven and have a tremendous year. What was that. So that was still the residual of the residual effects of the Of the rotator cuff surgery. Yes yes it was. So i was. I was also a mission to come back. We still have pretty much. The same guys can get back. Hopefully we can get back to when it comes should get back to get to the world series but So that was my whole goal was my mission that offseason. It was just a train and get the show back in shake at the spent back in. You know by being a lot so from time to time it would get fatigue on me so i'd have to go through no soon as training like doing little. Lightweight band wave just trying to keep the little muscle strong and then in ninety eight you did have a great view of history hitting cleanup with a monster year. Yourself behind behind mark maguire. Tell me about tell me about being part of that phenomenon. Witnessing it literally on the on deck circle every time he came up to the house of just behind him in wash watched What he was doing was unbelievable in a way he carried itself. I think that was the most important thing is he was just. He's getting so much attention and there was like he got a lawyer before him every night. No matter what it was spell out everybody wants to watch market home And just the way. He cared herself in the way he handled it. I was just unbelievable. I mean of course going out there. Hit seventy home run or something but just the way he went about it. He was very different than sammy. Sosa in terms of personality. Sammy aided up. I was down every day. Mark aided the attention that came with it and you know. I would argue at the russa to. Hey he's got to be available tomorrow or the next day and he said he hates this stuff he just hates that part of it he hated it he he didn't like you know he was. Just one of those guys want to go out and play the game and be productive. You know he didn't. He didn't like all the limelight on them like that. You know sammy was totally opposite with family. Wanted to go out. he's party. Fellate breaking club and all that tension mark was more more reserved to guac. Didn't take care of business and help you know. Help the team you know he. He hated all the individual attention. He was getting you know he was like you know. Sometimes you saw him interview. He's like hey but from other guys. Did you know he was just trying to deflect someone other guys live there biden with other guys are doing and they just as important. So that's just the way mark was man. I was thinking with that personality wanting to kind of just do his job get in get out and then you have people showing up at batting practice. Cheering each homer at batting practice. We'll never we'll never see that again. I don't think the cardinals. They probably made a few bucks off. It opened the doors a little early. And i mean if i'm him i'm like oh my god this to him batting practice but you see how far he was hitting ball. It was like man. I said i wish i could hit a ball that for just i just stayed in my lane just of due to do what i could do to help. Contribute you know but in that in that year it was just he would go out. Every day he had the same routine nothing change and he just just took it on striving. I mean like i said he didn't he didn't really wanted one of those guys that like a lot of tension but i thought he had a pretty well and over the years. I've heard tony larussa credit you for being that guy taken that role in that. That was a big piece to a mark was able to do a lot of guys who've had their beefs with tony. Where are you guys now. Is that something that it's all good or it. It's funny how many player lance berkman was on a show and he said man. When i was in houston i wanted to punch him in the face. He said then i got to know him better because then it was okay because now i love them. It seems like a lot of guys. It takes a while to kind of figure out tony or not everybody. I'm not sure scouting rowling's having barbecues with them. But tell me how that relationship evolved good. I think we've picked. Like i said one of i don't think we everybody other.

"People in this community knew him personally over the years. One of my favorite interviews. Wherever did grammy award winner from houston knew so many people here live here went to his treatments here at md anderson. I told the story this morning won't tell it again. Real quickly rained raindrops. Keep falling on my head. Won an oscar for best original song as part of the soundtrack to one of the biggest movies of nineteen. Sixty nine butch cassidy and the sundance kid. Which featured as you know. Robert redford and that was a song that really launched. Bj thomas he had released on before that but that's what really launched him in so doing some digging on that story. I found something quite interesting. First of all burt back. And how david wrote that song and they originally pitched it to ray stevens. I can hear ray stevens singing. That i can hear that song and ray stevens was. That's a natural Ray stevens was on top of the world. Nineteen sixty nine. You gotta understand that was like handing it to george strait or at a time. That george strait was just hit after hit after here. Hit and ray. Stevens turned it down. So then it was. Offered to be jay thomas which was a big step down. Bj thomas was not the star. He was and win. The film was released. Why when that fit. When that song was used as a soundtrack two years ago robert redford told usa today when the film was released. Which are meant butch cassidy and the sundance kid. I was highly critical. How did that song fit with the film. There was no rain in the movie at the time. It seemed like a dumb idea. Well how wrong. I was that song. That movie would launch. B j thomas's incredible career. And we have lost a great one here in. Houston my friend. A guest of the show. Another great houstonians. Lance berkman has been named head baseball coach at houston baptist university. He's in the college. Baseball hall of fame was a long time. Astros rice university graduate. He coached here at Second baptist. he was an assistant coach at university of saint thomas this past year and now he will be the head baseball coach at houston baptist university and they will be a winner as a result. So congrats to you. You likely paid tribute in one way or another. Maybe a social media post may be. You went to the cemetery. You may have lost a loved one in the service of this country wearing a uniform. One of the most. Poignant veterans are memorial. Day tributes that i saw don't laugh. The matteis story occurred at a lowes hardware store in baytown just east of houston over the weekend. They have a parking space just as we did at the rc. That says this space river reserved for veterans. Well somebody at that lowes store. A manager and employee took that parking space and made it a tribute to veterans. They laid out. Mulch make it look like it was at a cemetery and they put four steps perfectly placed and they lined it with plants along walkway and at the end of the walkway. They placed a flag and then more flowers like you were at a funeral location and it just felt so beautiful. I saw the story our our local. Tv station here covered it. I'm sure there were more glorious. Tributes but i just thought it was kind of the widow's mite of memorial day tributes because big corporations in this country have become woke. They've moved away from traditional american values and honoring those who died in battle. It just felt so good. And maybe you saw something similar and if you did i hope you told the business or the family. I find the most patriotic people. I'm meeting this. Country are folks that live along. The highways are the back farm to market roads. That put the trump banners on their barn that decorate their vehicles. Out in the country. That are shameless. That are fearless. That are proud. Unpatriotic in who in many cases served this country themselves anyway. I just. I wanted to tell that story. So back to the issue of egg on their face and the unwillingness to cover the lab leak because donald trump covered it. How many other cases are there. How many other cases are there where donald trump said something and the media's immediate need jerk reaction instinctively was to say that's not true how 'bout hydroxychloroquine. How about when he said hydroxychloroquine might be something that might help us in the treatment of this virus in the immediately said no it wasn't in it took how much longer until they admitted that it was how many people lost out because the media who they were trusting for their news was not offering objective news but was instead engaged in a political witch hunt. We're hospitalized for flu like symptoms. The chinese government knows whether they had corona viruses earliest november of nineteen. Because if they did it didn't start in the wet market. It started in the lab. And before you say well it doesn't matter let's just move on. It's going to happen again. It already has headline from this morning. China confirms first human case of h one. No n three bird-flu you see. It's not going away. The sars virus originated in china. I'm no longer convinced that these are inadvertent. "News story to talk about so many things happening with the state legislature with memorial day in the economy. You name it. Let's start with a local store. Sports story it really local feel-good story one of the good guys several years ago. Everyone that i know wanted lance berkman to be the head coach at rice university lance berkman originally from san antone came to houston to go to rice. He was a standout baseball player. They're one of the few cases where a guy gets to play in the town where they are beloved where his wife's family all lives. The baker family many many people in prominent family johnny baker. His dad played for his father-in-law played for the oilers. His brother jason done very well in real estate. The youngest brother josh pitcher went to rice as well. She got this rice family. You got the rice baseball family. You got the West side Christian solid values family and then he got a guy. That's a stand out player with the astros that everybody loved. Who didn't love big poma. Who didn't low fat elvis. Who didn't love everything about it. And if you ever heard him interviewed he seems like a guy. That's very quiet and retiring and kinda shy but radio personality sports radio personalities in town. We'll tell you it's one of the best interviews you'll ever have because he's really witty and he's he's quick. He's at it remember the time he came in and brought. The raccoon was recommended. Possum possum so somebody had found a possum in the woods. Somewhere at a church and in what to do about it he said i'll take it. So he comes in with his damn possum. And he has a thing crawling all over him. And once once it's like david letterman. I wanted to crawl over me. And i know i'm not vaccinated. No thanks you keep it but this everybody that knows got charming as all. Get out his wife who inlaws and and so they go over to second baptist. Where he's a coach. He brings rayner noble a new less than a twenty year collegiate coach at ua at uh to be his pitching coach and rayner noble. Anybody in college. Baseball knows how successful rainer was there. And andy pettitte it superstar baseball player for The yankees then came down during that magical season and pitched here from deer park another great houston story so everybody that i know was rooting for him to get that rice university job. Well he is politically conservative. He is open about his christian faith. And i don't know if it was david lebron over there or a niece parker apparently got involved but they didn't like his conservative politics and they went with an outsider and deflated A huge portion of the houston community. That thought we're going to have a great local story. Here of rice. Kid comes home to coach at rice. The nabet well sometimes in life that dream job that you believed you were gonna get doesn't happen and i guess the measure of a man is how you get back up and handle it from there. So i am delighted to see the news. Today that lance berkman will be going to houston baptist university and i hope he has the most success possible and at rice. University has to look across town and go. Oh i guess we guess we didn't handle that as well and do i also hope. The rice program fails because of it. Yes just on a purely petty. I love Lance berkman perspective. Yes i do. I hope they don't wanna game. And i hope that. Hbu is undefeated and that a lot of people are looking around going. Hey maybe maybe you guys aren't Maybe you yeah yeah. So there's that. So congratulations lance berkman. Congratulations houston baptist university. Their loss your gain and go watch some great baseball from a local program here. That's making some moves. I know some other folks that are going to houston baptist university. I've heard some very very good things about. Hbu of late so good for them. This is one of those stories. You don't expect nice memorial day tribute at the lows in baytown in the veteran parking stall the lowe's store paid tribute to the fallen memorial day is the day you honor those who are serving you. Don't honor those who are wounded and we have those. You honor those who did not come home while serving. Beautiful beautiful tribute. Abc thirteen said. The photo was sent in by a listener. Who said when. I first saw it stopped me in my tracks. It was an incredible way to honor those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom. So lows has a veteran. Parking spot for veterans. Just like we did it the rc. They do that at lowe's up front and i. It was probably a manager or an employee. Somebody said yeah. Do whatever you wanna do. it's three i. They put a bunch of mulch out there to make it a little like the fresh dirt and then it's four steps As if you're walking up to the flag a flag. It's probably all things that they had there in the store but it really is simple and beautiful. Whoever that was at lowe's in baytown good on you good on you. One hundred seventeen employees of the houston methodist healthcare system have filed suit because they have been mandated to take the covid vaccine houston methodist hospital. System will bring you that news report and one of those individuals coming up in about fifteen minutes. Happy trails to abc's. Tom cook signing off after thirteen years. Thirteen that's not right. That's you know baseball with my calling and then you know. I'm getting some of that coaching It's hard to replace the competition part of it and here. I thought the answer was going to be the cat. I thought also the cap the did you have st lois. Isla this is the last. Did you guys have st louis spots or hang on that you went to like you miss that you guys were frequented or you know honestly We don't go many places but we we're pretty much. Homebodies are some great restaurants obviously and st louis area but Simon of the chef with the cars for few years you know he's got rebel and we used to kill that we used to be there all the time rebel kitchen and in his food just trying healthy and so i would say that probably is the place that we frequent the most..

"No more and i really thought a lot of people thought that you know that would be Maybe the trip to the world series in four and then maybe an omar would remain and who knows what after that In terms of his legacy in chicago but it wasn't meant to be Nothing against him. Nothing against me a hand. They live down the street from that golf course. I was standing But what just a horrible end of that year in two thousand four despite that though it was really cool to be excited about acquiring nomar garciaparra and i love the trivia that he got a soup he got a world series ring for that red sox like i lived in new york when that when that happened i was a bunch of yankees fans probably actually joined us as many red sox fan like. I think it's worth noting. This is a little bit of a disappointment. The cardinals and cubs met in in two thousand. Fifteen in the lds. But they've never had a series like that like what the yankees and red sox had an oath three and four. We're really just felt like not just world series on the line but like just the identity of a whole region was on the line in those two years. So i remember that garciaparra trade and it's funny. If you go back and actually read. I read a piece about this a while back if you go back. And read the reaction to the trades the trade not only the cubs got no nomar. It's also well. I guess the red sox are giving up on this season. Which is funny because yeah. It's wild to think that the red sox reminds me a little bit frankly of when people were rumor for the cardinals were rumored to be trading lance berkman at in august of two thousand eleven. Like you just like the cardinals are giving up. If they're going to trade berkman the red sox are giving up if they're going to trade you know bar and and then then the most amazing thing happens. He was putting up unvbelievable numbers with boston to that point in unlimited games too because he had been hurt they i mean i it's i i'm kind of glad like the red sox have won more world series and the cardinals. Obviously they've had more success but it seems very exhausting sox fan to just constantly go first place to last place. Yeah it's exhausting. I have to say. I've always joke but like of places i would places. I'd want to play. Boston would be pretty low on that list. Life is hard enough in the red sox have kind of since then gun that a couple of times right because they've kind of backed into some of these not rebuild but let's get rid of all this money and we will pay you to take it off our books. They what sent all the guys to La carl crawford and adrian gonzalez. They've done it a couple of times. And then kind of i guess maybe backed into an accelerated trip right back to the postseason your third pick will of our all time favorite trade so so for me. I get for the record lou brooklyn he. Leo is obviously the biggest cardinals. The biggest cardinals creative of all time. I for what it's worth. I went to university of illinois. I was. I was a fancy baseball league. So long ago that we had to get our stats every week via fax from like a service and it was a league of cardinals and cubs fast and it was called the ernie breglio memorial league so he will always have a part in our history but for me nevertheless..

"There's still two things that I think everyone realizes, and everyone has the same opinion about from what had happened on Conference championship Sunday. And I'm talking about what happened between the Bucks and the Packers. Two opinions and the two talking points that I think everyone has There's one from the first half and there's one from the second half. The obvious one. Is the one that happened in the second half. Matt, look for had his Matt, look for Take a field goal in that spot. Down eight. Two of five left given the ball back to Brady All Brady has to do two first downs and the game's over. You don't get the ball back. Let's go back to the first talking point, though. And that's what happened at the end of the first half its 14 to 10 Rogers throws the pick. Under 35 seconds left in the first half. The Bucks end up going for it on 4th and 3/4 before they get the conversion just barely do Skin of their teeth. And then the next play. With eight seconds left. They toss a bomb down the left sideline. Scotty Miller on King one man on him. He scores a touchdown. And when you're watching that Yeah, part of you, depending on which side you're rooting for goes. Wow. What a throw by Brady. What a catch By Scotty Miller. Then there's another party that also says in an incredulous way. How the heck did the Packers let that happen? So I think one of the nicest guys I've ever encountered. When talking on the radio, and bringing someone on the air is the guest is Tony Dungy. Heck, trace. I actually got you to meet Tony Dungy when it came into the studios Colts fan Ryan Traci Key, like hiding underneath his desk. I can't believe Tony touches here. So I say Hello. Well, do I tell him? I'm a Colts fan. You were so nervous that day and I sent you a nervous and I ended up Introducing coach to you and you got a picture out of it. You get very bizarre, by the way with these former Colts player we had Dwight Freeney on 23 weeks ago. It even tell him when you were screening the phone call. Hey, Dwight, By the way, I love you. You're one of my favorite colts players ever. I'm a big fan. It just played off is if it's so small in the line. What's the matter with you? I just I feel weird, like being in the industry. I don't know when the line is okay to cross from being a professional to like being a fan, so I always try to air and just like, not like fan doing over him in proper and boring, like, you know. Come on you and Tony Dungy. What he say to you? Why'd you become a Colts fan? Especially living in New York. And you having a whole conversation? It's almost as if your best buds with Tony Dungy. He was very nice. So you would agree with that s s 100% 1 of the nicest people I've ever met One of the nicest people you ever met. And you've been here at CBS Sports Radio. How many years what 34. For going on five. All right, so four going on five. If you're keeping score at home on the Ryan Trace Hickey career at CBS Sports Radio and before Cove it you see a lot of people walk through these studios. I'm like talking from people like Shaquille O'Neal to David Wright. We Hall of Fame coaches. You've seen her? Who was the one person that you really said Why I can't believe they're here. Is there that one guy I had? A few is a female Kate Upton. She came in. While Kate Upton was our she's probably Maybe shock, but she find the most famous person I have ever seen. I've told this story before. When shack came into the studios. Was taping an interview with Lance Berkman for the weekend overnights. And our boss or it wasn't our boss of the time but ended up becoming our boss. David Mayor Nick. He just comes in studio hair. Are you done here? Someone's coming in to do an interview. Oh, my God. Yeah. Who's standing right behind David Marinich after he said that like about two minutes later, when he came back in Shaquille O'Neal I remember saying to shack Well, if I knew it was for you, I would have stayed in the studio and would not have given up the studio. He laughed in Mayor Nick. They didn't know he was coming. He's coming in to do his podcast, and I guess he was in the area near the studio and The host that used to work here. Hey was he was part of the intercom family. I think so. That's how they ended up getting shack to the intercom studio. So Mayor Nico's. We didn't know he was coming in. I have to go do my regular duties that he had said. You need help. They've because, yeah. Can you just watch the board and make sure nothing happens with shacks? Microphone? Absolutely. It's Shaquille O'Neal. For whatever happened, you know, the song Africa. For whatever happened. They start playing that song and I'm sitting there with Shaquille O'Neal and he's singing this song Africa. It was so cool. And then afterwards we had a nice little conversation. I was a little bit heavier at the time about starting to shed some pounds. I felt so small standing next to Shaquille O'Neal. You made me.
