"I guess you're happy to get it regardless if it's your first. But ideally, I suppose you would want to get it on a clean little hit, probably. All right, so that's the end of the stat blast thinks as always to everyone who has sent in the questions and thanks to rain for his research, and that brings us finally to the past blast. This is episode 1894, so the past plus comes from 1894 and from Richard hershberger, historian, saber researcher, author of strike for the evolution of baseball. So he writes a condemnation of bunting to advance the runner. So again, this is 1894 here. So it's not 2022. A condemnation of bunting to advance the runner if there is any excitement in seeing a great big fellow like Dan brothers or roger Connor, lumber up to the bat with a label on his back reading watch me, I'm going out, so the other fellow can walk down to second, then I mistake the game, declared Frank Bancroft. It is disheartening to see men who were hired to slug the ball going up and dying like calves because the runner ahead of them won't take any chances in stealing a base. So Richard says, sacrifice hits were all the rage in the early 1890s, not everyone was happy about it. Even some observers who agreed that it was smart scientific baseball disliked bunting as poor spectacle compared to the long ball, Frank Bancroft here adds the argument that a sacrifice is cuddling the runner at first, who should be able to steal second without the batter giving himself up. Most modern fans admire a well placed bunt, but the tension between winning strategy and good spectacle is very much alive. The details of the debate in 1894 are quaint, but the tone of the discussion is familiar today. So even in the 19th century there were people who were saying, stop bunting because it's a waste and also it's boring. Well, I mean, sometimes though you get to see guys go fast. Yeah, I mean, look, I think that we still conflate the different kinds of funding. Totally. I think the blanket stop bunting. Right. That has made people lose sight of the fact that bunting for a hit can be quite fun. Thrilling even. Yeah, and it can make sense depending on who the hitter is. And who the picture is and where the defense is. No one who has ever said stop bunting really ever meant. Never bunt for a hit. I don't think. But it's often taken that way. Because there's been such a backlash to sacrifice bunting, which I agree is not only not great strategy most of the time, but is boring. And has apparently been apparent to people since 1894 that it was often boring, especially if it was a capable hitter who was giving himself up, dying like a calf instead of swinging away. So I don't think that calf's famously give them you have a sacrificial lamb. People eat them, right? I mean, I guess we don't say second cow as much. Yes. But yeah, sack buns, boring, for the most part, bunting for a hit completely entertaining often. All right, that will do it. All right, well, after we finished recording, I tracked down the aforementioned Dodgers article that I wrote for grantland. Turns out that was in March of 2015, it was a 2015 season preview piece when I speculated about how the Dodgers might someday be stopped. The lead image attempt that piece was of Brandon McCarthy, who is not pitched in the majors since 2018, yet the Dodgers roll right along. They are indeed indomitable as the title of the episode says. Also, one small correction in the outro to our preceding episode, I included a broadcaster name mix up. It was a pronunciation of Lamont wade junior, and yet again, in the midst of reporting a pronunciation mistake. I made one myself because that call was by rocky's unanswered Jack corrigan, I believe I called him Jerry as some owl eared listeners noted. I was probably confusing him with another rocky's radio announcer, Jerry schemmel, I've learned my lesson. I'm not going to relay any broadcaster screw ups today because if I don't say any names, I can't screw up any names. I'm just happy I came up with the one universally unobjectionable take, which is that Yankee Stadium

"With something sticky so that you get a good grip out like really being able to grip it and rip it so that you can get the maximum spin and efficiency and movement. So maybe it's two different ways to achieve two different aims, but I guess the consistent theme is that we'll use whatever we can use and get away with in order to improve our pitching, whether it's the 19th century or the 21st. Yeah. All right. Well, thanks to Richard for the past blast as usual. And we will be back very soon because we've got a late start to this week. We did. It's my fault. That's okay. You took a couple days off, not even to go see your professional basketball team in its championship, but just have a couple days off. That's okay. Because you're a podcaster and a managing editor and we accept that people in such professions might take a little time off as opposed to being a catcher for major league team when it's just off for boat and how dare you. Quitting on your team. Yeah. All right, we'll be back soon. All right, before I leave you, I have a few follow-ups and corrections from last week, the first is that when we did a meter major leaguer segment on Brendan Bernardino, I mentioned that he had played for the 2018 Winnipeg gold eyes, the independent league team in the American association. However, I did not say gold eyes. I said golden eyes clearly had the 25th anniversary this week of GoldenEye 007 on the brain. It is, in fact, gold eyes not golden eyes, a couple of listeners wrote in to point this out, including Al, who said it is the Winnipeg gold eyes not golden eyes, the gold eye is a fish commonly found in Manitoba and the baseball team is one of our only nice things, please at least give us this. Sorry, Al, I'm sure there are other nice things in Manitoba. But yes, it's the gold eyes, and if you want more on the gold eyes, check out episode 1085 when we devoted most of an episode to a strange game played by the Winnipeg gold ice. I did say it correctly back then. Also last time I included a couple broadcaster mix ups of angels outfielder Taylor ward's name. I also messed up myself when recording that outro, which I acknowledged and included my little blooper reel of me messing it up the first time what I did not notice was that during the episode proper, I had called Brandon marsh, Brandon Walsh, so even when I and producer Dylan caught one of my angels or former angels names mistakes, we did not catch one of the others, just hard with all the words and the wades and the marshes and the Welsh's, so it was fitting that I screwed up that name in a way that I did not even notice. And also one of those broadcaster screw ups I played was Dave Sims, I believe, calling Taylor word Turner ward. It had slipped my mind at that moment that Turner ward was himself a Major League Baseball player, although not for some time, but he was an outfielder who played for several teams from 1990 to 2001, so perhaps that's what Sims was thinking of. These days, Turner word is an assistant hitting coach for the Cardinals, so who knows? Maybe he's the one who fixed Albert Pujols. And while we're on the subject of ward mistakes, listener Danny wrote in to say, I would like to bring to your attention that neither Tyler weighed nor Taylor ward needs to be in a game for the names to be mixed up in the top of the third inning of the giant set rockies game on Friday, August 19th, the rockies radio announcer who might believe was Jerry corrigan, was talking about Lamont wade junior and dropped a Lamont ward, but immediately realized his mistake and corrected himself. I'll play that for you here. Two outs nobody on. Lamont Warren wade up should say is the hit or the right Fielder. It's really more of a Lamont worn than wade or ward, kind of got caught in between there, but Danny continues. This makes me think that all announcers know about the rash of wade ward mix ups and are on edge for every instance of any player named either waiter ward. In this case, the pressure got to the announcer and he slipped much to the amusement of this effectively wild listener. And now all effectively wild listeners, thank you, Danny. Also, I did a stop blast last time on players with negative wind probability added totals who had the highest wars ever in a reported that Adrian Beltre in 2010 who was a 6 plus fan crafts war player, he had a very slightly negative WPA and so he held the distinction at least since 1974 of having the highest war of any player with a negative WPA. We were trying to puzzle out how that had happened and we noted that he had a lot of double plays that year, so maybe some high leverage double plays had contributed to it. A few listeners wrote in to note that it seemed like the leaderboard of high war negative WPA players was populated by a lot of defense first players, and that's an excellent point because one of the limitations or simplifications of WPA is that it credits run prevention to the pitcher not to the Fielder, so if a lot of your war value is coming from your defense, then that's not really going to be accounted for by your WPA. And so it would be easier for a high war player to be a negative WPA player if a greater percentage of his wars coming from his defense of value. So I looked at it again, this time substituting for war, I used offense, which is a fan graft stat that just takes into account your runs above average as a batter and as a base runner without positional adjustment or anything like that. And if we go by that, then 2010 Adrian Beltre still toward the top of the list, he's actually third because in addition to being a good defender, he was quite a good hitter, especially that year he had a one 40 WRC plus, so he still shows up toward the top, but the highest offense only player with a negative WPA since 74 is another Boston Red Sox. Bill Miller in 2003. So that year Bill Miller was worth 4.7 fan grafts were, but he had a 31.9 offense score, so he was like 32 runs above average, basically as a base runner and batter, and he had a negative .55 WPA. And it looks like his issue was un clutch Ness that year. He had a 9 38 OPS plus overall, but a 6 68 OPS in late and close situations. He had a 1322 OPS when the score difference was greater than four runs in either direction, and only a 7 60 or so when it was a tie game or within one run. So he didn't have a clutch year that year and that's how he ended up on top. So it was 2003 Bill Miller, 1991 Chris Sabo, and then 2010 Adrian Beltre after that 1996 Jose canseco 1985 Mike Davis, and I'll put the rest of the list online. Linked on the show page. This year's leader, by the way, with one of the top 20 scores all time is Santa Bo karts. Negative .2 WPA 18.9 offense. Lastly, we had a question about recursive caps, so a baseball cap that would have a character on it who was wearing the same cap. I put out a call for candidates and Joseph wrote in to note the 1978 Orioles hat actually does feature the Oreo bird wearing a hat with the oriole bird on it, however it's just the outline of the bird wearing a cap, so there's not enough detail for multiple levels

"There's also a chance that we both entirely ignored the other team because that is also very, very, very giant. And it's also very, very baseball. You know, like in baseball, the media and other people, they're just like, you know, what about those Dodgers? And the guys are just like, what? We're playing the pirates today. The pirates keep fucking women. That's who we're worried about actually right now. You know, like we worry about them when we actually play them. So yeah, so nobody really knows. And that's the best thing about it. There's all these guesses. I don't know. I think that the projection thing of we're just pretty deep into the whole let me rather than sort of talk about the yinz and Yang's of like, you know, if XYZ happens, the Giants could be at this range of wins. And if X, Y, X happens, they could be at this range. Like, there's kind of less than that of that, and that's just kind of like, let me fucking hit a bullseye, like on national television. And so if that's if that's what's going on, you know, people will often be very, very wrong. And it was the season that they were very, very wrong. So I don't know. We didn't see Donald Trump either, but you know, you could have, if you asked any of your black friends, how racist people actually are. But the Giants are much more pleasant surprised. Yeah, far more pleasant, far more pleasant, surprised. And then also, let's be honest, like, who was watching our games. Like, really? Who was watching our games? Like, you know, if we're being honest, most people are watching the mets, the Yankees, the Dodgers, and Otani starts, you know, and lots of those people I would imagine were the people like weighing in. Like, how are they doing this? Maybe watch the game. We have really good players. Like really good players. And then, you know, the fine wine aging. I don't know. Ask them, you know? You never get honest answers. And then the honest truth is it's like the people that are right in the thick of it have no idea. Though they could make some shit up on a podcast, they have no idea how all of that happened. So I definitely I definitely feel that the players got overlooked. It was like everybody, it was like everybody was like, how are they so good at people just like looking past the players? Like, perhaps it's because the players are really good. And so it felt like they didn't really get their due. It's very, very clear that farhan Scott are very good at fantasy baseball. Right. They're very good at it. Most people fucking, they go to Ross or TJ Maxx or Marshalls, you come out with jeans that don't really fit. These fucking guys come out with Lamont wade and Louise Gonzalez. It's impressive. Yeah. That definitely helps. You know, I don't know. I just want to highlight that, you know, in the center of it, people are still sort of unsure. It's a mystical kind of thing, but it did kind of bother me that there weren't enough people that were just kind of talking about how good the players were and performed. And there is definitely some, there were some good bounces for sure. Yeah. You brought up the Dodgers in the sort of daily awareness of them. We did want to ask you sort of what is the either the motivational value or perhaps the frustration of operating in a division where you have one and you were meant to have two before the Padres fade in the second half, competitors where, you know, if you had been in the central, you could have you could have won a lot fewer games and sort of waltzed in, but you had you had the misfortune of being in all west. So how much does that operate either in the forefront or the background as you're navigating the season? You know, it's like seems like a good time to deploy one of those quotes about you want to be the best. You play the something something like that, you know, waltzing in as cool too. That's a nice time. You know, the season is so crazy that, you know, the end of it, it really does truly matter. Like what's going on the last week of the season. Yeah. Losing Brandon Belt for me, we lose the World Series right there losing Brandon Belt. The World Series, yes, the playoffs is a crapshoot. But, you know, we were we were like maybe the best team in baseball and we lost our very bonds, like belt was just out of his mind last year. And that was also my favorite part of the whole thing. Like, this is like America very drop to the ball, like Brandon Belt basically turned into a pro wrestler and a comedian at the same time. I'm not sure I've seen better TV and we were, you know, like talking about whatever boring Tim Tebow payola narratives rather than that. He was, he was doing press conferences like talking about being like the greatest in the world. It was like, he went full Muhammad Ali and nobody found that interesting at all. But he was yeah, I mean, I thought that was a huge, you know, huge, huge, huge blow. Even though we had been doing it all year because we were very injured all year long. So that's why, you know, having a really, really strong culture, not just, you know, we talk about culture usually about as this sort of like happy or not a happy thing, just like a like a social thing. I don't mean socially. I mean, you know, like a culture that actually seeps into the way the game is played in the way the game is viewed and the way that players like newcomer players sort of take their cues to step in. There are bad cultures and they don't really help people at all, but you know people just kept stepping in, but that was a major, major blow to have at the end of the season. So anyway, ranting a bit, but you know, the last week of the season really means a lot. So if you're, if you're not playing meaningful games for three weeks, like maybe that's a disadvantage, like maybe you just need to kind of like the best case scenario is that you're kind of like, you know, maybe that nationals team, like you're bad and then you just climb out of that and then just full steam ahead and then, you know, a couple trades were even better. What? Like that's maybe that's like the formula. Nobody really knows. So I don't know. For me personally, I love baseball. It means I get to watch really good players. When we play, we play the Dodgers and the Padres, you know, it's like there's a pitch, a great pitch away. It's like off the end of the bat served to right field, like hit exactly to where the guys positioned. Same thing happens on the inner half of the plate. Just like that over and over, amazing pitches. Like, it's just good to watch. It's great. Obviously it's not great for business. I'd much prefer that we won a 140 games and kept going obviously to the playoffs. So I don't know..

"And that kind of study I imagined there might be some confounding factors there. I had worked to see if they adjusted for that, but if there's a ton of player movement, it could also be that the team is in a transitional phase and maybe it's not winning a whole lot and that could cause it attendance to fall as well. Yeah, I imagine that so I think two things. I think the first is that the nature of the movement probably matters a great deal, right? If you have a bunch of guys say, and I'd have to look at how these studies are sort of defining movement. I know I've read rob's piece, but I don't remember the contents of it sorry erupt. Right, yeah, there could be different definitions of turnover rate in these various studies. Right. So it's like, are we counting, say, you know, relievers at the edge of the roster going up and down from triple-A is that considered movement or is it leaving the organization? I think rob was looking at just total plate appearances and betters faced and how many of the players who accounted for those last year were also on the team this year, like what percentage of the plate appearances plus batter's face were produced by the same players. Gotcha. So I think you're right that the nature of the movement probably varies depending on the team. And I think that the character of that movement is probably pretty important to how fans feel about it. So, you know, if a team, like you said, is sort of in a period of transition on the big league roster, you might see a lot of guys coming and going as the big league club tries to determine is Lamont wade junior good, right? Should we continue to roster him? The Giants kept him around, but they had a bunch of sort of post type post prospect guys in the last couple of years who they sort of cycled through to see, can we help this guy stick? Can we get something out of him? Is he worth being a complimentary piece as we try to retool the roster? So I think that how fans sort of connect to and view that stuff is perhaps maybe different than, you know, a team like, say, the rays where it's like there is a predictable payroll level at which a guy's spot might be imperiled not because of his play on the fields, but because of budgetary constraints, I think that those things probably read and feel really different to you as a fan and we've talked about before. I think it is really important, maybe not your entire roster, but I think it is really meaningful for fans to be able to buy a Jersey with confidence, right? It's great that raise fans have wander Franco now and can and just be invested in him for the next couple of years, and that doesn't mean he'll be a ray for the duration of that extension, but you can buy his Jersey today and feel like you're going to be able to wear it on opening day next year and not worry about it, right? Like it's good. The guardians fans get to be confident that José Ramírez is going to be around, right? That's meaningful to be able to have your guy on the team who you connect with so that there is a human face to the franchise and it isn't just laundry generally. It's that guy's laundry, which is a funny sentence out of context, right? So I think that it does matter having a connection to the team and being able to feel like there's some stability. And I think part of that emotional experience is probably what else that stability signifies, right? Like if you have a good big league team that doesn't have a lot of roster turnover because the team has properly identified the players who can help them win, part of why that feels good to you as a fan is that you know the dudes on the team and you know their stories and you're invested in them and part of that is probably also that your team is winning more than it was when it was going through like the churn phase of a roster of roster construction. So I think it matters. I mean, how much it matters. I think it probably, like I said, depends on the character of the movement, the overall fortunes of the team, and how much that aspect of it resonates with you as a fan, but if it does, I think it matters a lot. Yeah, the turnover rate obviously has increased over time and it increased a lot post free agency. Players had the option to go somewhere different, which is not a bad thing, although it has definitely made for more turnover. And I don't think of it as something that's an impediment to my enjoyment of baseball. Now I could see how if you were just getting into the game and half the players on the team that you're watching one year are gone the next year, that could be daunting. If you didn't grow up with some connection to a team, then you're not really rooting for laundry, you're probably rooting for the players who are inside that laundry. And so if the players are all different the next year, then you're going to say, hey, wait a minute. I liked that guy, and now he's not here anymore. So yeah, as we talked about with the Freddie Freeman situation, like it hurts when someone like Freddie Freeman leaves, it hurts less when you get someone like Matt Olson to replace him. So it depends, I think, first and foremost fans care about is the team goodwill, the team went a lot. And you have to have some consistency and carry over. I mean, if it's just, you know, you're wiping the sleep clean constantly and the players who were playing for the team one day or different from the next day, then that's an issue. And we've talked, I think, in the past about the idea of acquiring players in the middle of the season and I think we did a stat blast maybe about just how much of the braves production in the playoffs last year was produced by players who joined that team in the middle of the year and how unusual that was..

"I mean obviously every bench should be used for next week. I mean pick up guys who are hot. Even guys like swindale just to make sure that your phone can't yet. That's something i definitely do. I'm looking at ups for next week. I have a head league. Where my last week of the regular season. And i actually added lamont wade and it's a small league like you only have like seven active hitters. I accidentally activated lamont weight and belt off waivers because they were a course and now they're wrigley terrible pitching and i thought okay. This is gonna work out. I'm off to a good start so far. So look at the match ups are the rockies at home. You know and the rockies. Next week i think is the last major home stand is it. Let's say now note. Next week they're still on the road so hurt. Your opponents help yourself. That would be what i'd say. Don't waste a single roster spot period. Make sure everyone is maximized And beyond that. That's just broad strategy. If volume of pitching matters that comes into the stark caps innings caps for your match to start pitchers weekly versus daily lock. If any of that comes into play make sure you have your starting pitching assignments lineup before your opponent. Does that was my next question. How how early do you try to target the two star pitchers because if he did it now or when he asked the question a few days ago everything changes between two. But you don't want to be too late you don't want to be. The last guy is like a saturday night. Kind of thing. Saturday nights too late today. Whoever pitches wednesdays pitching next monday and a lot of cases. Wainwright's star guy next week. See if he's he can't be a bell. But like zach gallon might be available or one of the starts at dodger. Stadium these to start guy odor rizzi who you know complaining about his usage but he can give them five decent innings to runs. He should win at taxes on monday. He might be available in your home arizona next so those are two good matchups for him because he complained. Maybe they'll leave in for another twenty twenty pitches okay. I'll give you another example here. People were stuck in spots letting go of injured players mentioned the ground before clayton. Kershaw is due back on monday. It is conceivable. There's a league. Shallow enough that clayton kershaw had to be. Let go even if you don't intend to use them for what's a line for to start week. You wanna make sure you prevent your opponent from doing it. So adam put them in your injured spot and make sure it gets beyond the lineup. Lock so you can't have them used against you stuff. That's why we go to you. That strategy needs brandon is gonna win his league crag wants to know if we see bobby way it all of the season and wasn't aware he ranks both redraft and key performance for next year. You want to have the same bobby argument. We just didn't wonderf- ronco. I mean do you think he's going to sixty two..

"You know there was. There was no problem with what we saw from jordan berry. And we abby. He kicked pretty well. And getting back to what dave said earlier on that on that hold presley presley kicked fine but if it comes down to it and they were joking not joking but they were mentioning on the radio broadcast. I don't know if it was wolfer was stark's but they said you know when you a tight battle like this. It might come down to the kickers decision. And i believe jeff said that. He looked the kicker being boswell looked looked angered about something. And so you know if he's got a vote he's like he's lobbying to keep jordan. Barry right yeah i mean jordan. Barry didn't do poorly. He had one of those short kicks about midway through the game. Where i think the only travelled like thirty some yards. It was a really short pick that kick pun. I mean it was is typical shank. Anyways dave what about you. What did you think about specialties. I'm wondering if the numbers. I'm seeing here wrong. I need to try to look somewhere else. They're saying that harvard's average was only thirty point eight. I know he had that one short. Putt 'cause they were putting from their own forty seven. Yeah but i didn't know if that put it down that much. But honestly i. I don't think either one did anything to go out and grab it or lose it unless they care a bunch about the holding. Now we i. This is something that we've heard from boswell. Before you know. He likes jordan berry as his holder. And that's something that he's been public about. I don't know we'll see this is why all those people that listen to my. Let's ride podcasts. And i always told him. I'm not celebrating presley harvard. Even if he gets the job on tuesday they keep him in released roy moore. I'm still not celebrating until after the bye week. And he still the kicker because i celebrated last year. Dustin colquitt go ahead ryan. Can i just want to say something here. We're getting some chatter in the live chat about. Hey kickers don't make that decision you know that doesn't matter blah blah blah. The coaches make the decision gentleman. I had an interview last year. With hall of famer. Morten andersen. And i asked him about the holders and the long snappers and he mentioned long snappers that his favourite long snappers in his favourite holders and he said the holder is one of the biggest deals for kicker. We find a horror that we want and we do anything we can to keep them. So if you don't think that the kicker is not going to be whispering ears and lobbying for a player they're going to and if it's that close of a face off in their thinking about that one part of the game the coaching staff they're going to think about that one part of a game of the game. They're going to do it. There's a lot more than goes on than than we. Now you're right you're absolutely right So we'll see we'll see what happens on tuesday. Let's talk about the defense. Let's just do it this way. I mean jamir. Jones led the steelers tackles. He had me look quickly. Eight tackles five solo. One sack one tackle for loss in two quarterback kids other than that other players. That kind of made a splash. As as as allowed milk five tackles he had a sack. Tackle for loss in quarterback hits james. Fear with four tackles in tackle for loss Cassius marsh looked okay. He had to tackle for loss as well. Who stood out on defense We'll start with you dave. I mean jamir. Jones did early on as much as anything The defensive line there was times where they i mean. Jeffrey benedict is all over. Henry mondo and and what that he's really he's the guy that's ahead of these other ones. But then i mean isaiah. Bugs look good. Carlos davis didn't look good early but then looks good later. I mean so but almost at the mouth there in combination so there was some people on defense. And i thought james pierre looked good when he was in there because i mean he was. I mean if you're coming up as a corner and you're basically tackling a receiver for no gain or one yard. That's a nice play. So but i don't think i don't know if he wasn't out there long or if they just stop throwing his side so it was really. It's really difficult to say that any of the guys just did great. Throughout the entire game ryan. What about i thought lamont wade looked pretty. Good number twenty. Four on defense penn state. I felt like he was flying to Receivers he was flying the ball carriers. I just thought. And he he meant force that fumble that they ended up they through the flag and that didn't get overturned but man he laid a lick on that guy as well so i i really thought he helped himself out a lot in this game. So that's that's a guy that i was thinking about as well so in you know they were talking about him a lot on the broadcast. Lamont way yeah. I mean i. I've been very pleasantly surprised with isaiah louder. Milk this entire preseason. I said that on twitter during the game. I just come down with a sack in this game. But i mean here's a kid that when the steelers traded into the fifth round to draft him out of wisconsin. What did we all say who. Why what leonard heard of this guy he comes in. Of course he's getting all you know he's getting his car. Wax by the position coach and players are saying is potential and all this stuff. He looks like a young campaign as crazy as that may sound and i'm not just talking about physically. But the way he plays. I think that he has a really bright future. With the steelers. It might be steel of a pick in the reason why they traded a fourth round twenty twenty two draft to the miami dolphins to get back into the fifth round and get him. I was one of the ones that said you know. He's going to make the team just because they traded up for him. Now he's gonna make the team because he's been a quality participant on the defense. You all agree with that davies. See the same thing that i do. I mean if he was a guy that it just seemed like all the other guys were just so much better than him than you just kind of might say you know what we took a shot. We didn't get it now. That has not been the case. He has shown that he is is worth the investment of a season to try to develop them. Even more brian as thoughts on louder milk i thought he had a great presence about him and he was in there on without sack in in there on a another hit that i believe i know jamir jones was in on that hit too. I think louder milk was there when they when they said that it was an incompletion from sam darnold but these guys on defense. I like the fact that a lot of them you know. Dave mentioned carla davis not looking good in the first half. I like the fact that jamir jones and louder milk look good in the first half and we talk a lot about the first half yesterday on the preview and the players that played well in the first half are going to get a better look being up against a first team and they were up against the first team. So i guess we could talk about my in my gosh so much bad. That happened in this game. But i kinda wanna spend a few minutes talking valley. Let's just wrap up the preseason in general all four games what.

jordan berry jamir presley presley wolfer boswell dave presley harvard Dustin colquitt Barry Morten andersen jordan Cassius marsh Jeffrey benedict steelers Henry mondo roy moore Carlos davis james pierre abby

"Timetable. I didn't see a specific time. I thought the old manager said that he would be back in early september. Because obviously that's a playoff team and they want him in game two of the series so they're causing a little bit of the the workload management. Work decisional bitten. But you know. The dodgers could easily just have kershaw hits the fourth and fifth inning. Three games in september to get him ready for the playoffs. They don't even have to start him in a playoff game. Now because they've got to excellent right-handers ensures zor and in bueller so and then orients will be fine. Oris isn't even hurt right now. I think this is going to give him a break. They know he's bitching and say who's pitching the next time. The rotation spot comes up during this week with the following week. Yeah why would the dot. I mean maybe the dodgers on casta giants and now they have to beat the padres of the reds on a one gamer reassures. Her which will happen. But the point here is like. I don't think i don't think kershaw is going to start another game or get to one hundred pitches in september. One hundred pitches is a bigger deal to me. I don't think they need them in their player for tation. I think so right now. Would you drop degrom kershaw. So based on the newest being fairly new. You're right we revisit that of part of this discussion. I genuinely don't know whether he does contribute. I probably would rank these guys most likely to cut. Probably the exact order now. I probably curse out last. I'd go on degrom kershaw so you would cut bieber i. What's the story there. I exact opposite ranking these. He's coming back in two weeks. I don't know why they bring it back but like what do you expect. I mean i would you. Why would you wait on the ground and kershaw. Are you sure you're saying the same thing as you're saying because honestly i have no idea what any of these four guys contribute to you. I feel the most comfortable in rhode dawn's ability to contribute but as you said september first labor day it's three potential weeks of impact action might be four isn't no. I think it's three when we talk about labor day. He's just not at a level of those guys. It's a tough question. Either way and tough spot to be it is. It's a tough spot to be an. Maybe if i had the prominent team i would just keep really think bieber gives you anything more than those guys. i think. He's the only one the only one who's actually going to throw a baseball this week and possibly return on august and that's the differentiator for me. Okay that he's the only one of these four guys who's even been discussed throwing a baseball and returning in august and they're saying for some reason that they want to get him a couple of starts to showers shoulders healthy for the off season. Which i think is not smart. Because they're not making the plows but for fantasy purposes that's what they're doing We ain't seen kershaw this month. I promise you that or graham. And i doubt road on. So that's why i would take. I would keep bieber the most of these. That's all hard for me to disagree with that. It's not the way ranked but they're all close on break the time think. I'm worth eric here. That i'm just Valuing availability more than talent like. I don't think i'll valuing information clarity or their word for that over. I is clarity that he is throwing a baseball tomorrow. That the glad is absolutely true. That doesn't mean anything in the course of his rehab. After that. that's the problem. I have with it. I i totally see point though. He's throwing a baseball. Well said anointing to say some point trivia last month's which team leads the big leagues in home runs hit. I'm guessing it's not the giants. Because i think they leave for the season and you wouldn't ask the question this way. The giants are the right answer. I completely who leave the giant. Who do you think lead. The giants in home runs homers. Either okay either. That or tell me where. The leader of the giants ranks in baseball and home runs like the giants. Don't have anybody with twenty five twenty but everybody's hitting them posey yet they don't have anybody in the top fifty and homers. They lead the frigging league in home because they have better. Because they had darren rough with fifteen and they have like lamont way. Juniors born adding and ran across twenty-five again. It's just amazing. We're all you know why they're not adding them because they're they're playing time isn't known every single day if they had a solid eight like the blue jays lineup. Everybody will be on. The giants are more. Offense is gonna look like this the further removed onto analytics where everybody can hit for power. Nobody's running are re ever going to get back to where one hundred homers three or four already there. Nobody's running except two guys went. The power distribution is nothing like this for all the teams where no the league and nobody has twenty. That's crazy. Yeah but the different series. They'd have to win the world series and then everybody will buy in. I think to some degree and it's hard to build a team like this. It's hard to get lucky. Lamont wade darren rough so the you know like the dodgers could do it because they have the money but you know teams would never they just want regulars. Toronto just has eight regulars right now. You don't wanna. Do you want to build a team like this because more can go wrong. They can go right off. The pads are different between the dodgers and the giants giant. The dodgers can pay to get as you mentioned the names. The giants are using their scouting and analytics to get the cheap guys off. The waiver wire very very different approaches fascinating. And it doesn't always happen. I mean tampa tempest. Had some years where it didn't quite all come together looking good now but not every resolve. It's very dangerous for the long term health of team. They're all in their thirties. Posing melt solano crawford dickerson stransky. They're all over thirty years old. So i don't know what this lineup looks like next year. Even obviously crawford got signed an extension. Posy can stay as long as he wants. But had these mike documents back down rough. Probably won't be back. Austin slater like it's a really old team. I'm very interested to see what happens with this team. I i would love for them to win a couple playoff series. Because i liked their manager and i you know i'd like to see a team like this..

"I read the zero players. They can start sitting him every once in a while. If they want to like get his head right in fact he sat against owning. The a surprise early in else is coming like this. Like or like a phantom. You are no i'm fine. No you're hurting your fatigued. We think you're fatigued. I think i'm great. I'm ready to go. i'm just starting to feel it ain't feeling shit. Get on the exactly. Yes that's where we are with balance it probably not everybody right. Check your wire. But i think a of need to cut him. I really do because. I don't know what you're hanging on for especially if you're keeping them in the lineup with like a foam oh attitude of. I don't want miss generally get that. Like i don't like i never bench louise castio at any point this year and i feel pretty avenged on that based on how brilliant. He's been lately You know and so. It's not always something where i am ready to pull the plug and finally said. I'm often to patient. But i think i think it's a gots to go situation right now with bellinger and we'll regroup for for twenty twenty twenty twenty two and frankly if he pops off you could buy them back to. It's always pain painful to do that. But no you can't because someone in your league. We'll pick up the name i am saying. Oh i you're you're probably right but i'm just saying like if he does linger out there and starts to someone will pick him up. There's always somebody good then then also not only will you get out from under it. But you'll waste somebody's fab just because iran those numbers through through the Calculate fingertips calculator auction calculator while we were talking Big name just was like underneath Bellinger that i just wanna like mentally. How bad is michael conforto in year. I almost did did this with him. bellinger took conforto spot. Just because i feel like conforto you know what i think. I answered a question about him and chat recently. We actually haven't talked about him recently on the pod saw Yeah we could have done the same thing with him and a pretty much share all the same notions like which is so weird. Like he's he's gotta be heard because he's walk in thirteen and a half times dragon at twenty two percent of the time hidden one ninety nine. It's rough Shower leagues i mean. This is not a fifteen thing with bellinger and conforto. I get that you gotta keep that kind of talent to at least see what's up even if you're benching it but in other leagues. Like twelve tens. You can't wait too long. You gotta pick up something. That's giving you some production you gotta get on some of these hot streaks even if you take ortega for two weeks and then cut him and get somebody else and then cut that guy get somebody else down a lot you know you gotta you gotta keep sticking move and intense and that's that's what finally learned and that's why ben competitive in my head to head ten but it took two years of me getting my clock cleaned. 'cause i'm hanging onto these star guys or even guys that aren't quite stars like two years ago. I'd still have laura's guerrero on my team in attend cheaper. That only uses three outfielders. Gets i love this guy and this year i finally. I had him. And i don't even play twelve. I mean you gotta play what you're comfortable and i figured out the comfort level and i still in most comfortable and fifteens but i've gotten better at twelve's intens and figuring out when to pull the plug and you're gonna make some bad moves at certain points. There's no doubt about it but that's not the point you keep moving. You can't worry about that. And he has part of the problem. Is we worry about that. 'cause fifteen's you're probably not picking up anything all that great so when you do make that move. I cut him for this two bit. Idiot that i've already cut six weeks ago. Oh my god wanted. I do but intended for freaking jock peterson. But then i kept peterson for three weeks. And then lamont wade went off again because frigging belt got hurt and so i have weighed right now and i don't care that i cut bellenger you know. I think he's just got to keep moving forward. So i would cut conforto as well under all the same principles that i'm talking about here with bellinger. Let's talk you on moncada. it's not quite as grim in terms of just like painful awfulness. It's not very good either though to twenty nine overall in the player raider twenty-second at third base does have nine homers and. He's two for foreign stolen basis. This is ten teamer exclusive. I don't think twelve teams are cutting him but do ten teamers. Should they be moving on from you on moncada. I don't think so Coming why nothing recent. That's going to do it. I'll tell you that. No i mean i look. He's got nine percent. Barrel percentage since june first to fourteen three fourteen fifty seven five homers and the both of the steals that that he has on the air. Yeah i just. I'm probably the wrong person asked got here. He is no hit the longest. He's been on base once this month. Okay yeah i think you probably can. I mean we. I can't like say like guys. Like toro are really interesting and worth picking up leagues and then not say that. The guys like moncada. Who are struggling aren't worth dropping like of gabby where we just have to be brutal about it. And yeah probably. He's probably droppable intending leaks and is so hard. Because you know there's so many pickup articles out there. There's so many pickup pickup that they never tell you what to kai. Yeah and so that you'll have making these decisions. That so harness like we'll keep them montoro toro probably out there in most ten. Should you not get one of them for for For for for ghana. I think you can make an argument for sure. I think patrick wisdom could to especially if you need power if you need if you mocatta was like for batting average for you. He is still hitting two fifty six which is not the end of the world. Wisdom is not gonna help there so maybe he's not the fit in that realm. But i do think the other two guys that we just mentioned could and again your waiver pickup on the week has third base eligibility and espn animal ten minute. I'm i'm on keeping the name until we get to that segment but your guy could be could be somebody to go for some. That's quick moncada. Because i'm not gonna go any deeper. That's just where i'm at too. There's no pop. There's no speed too decent average but the runs aren't even that great either and that would be the one thing that you would at least be thinking like okay. If as long as i'm getting runs an average i can do it. But he's pacing for seventy eight runs. It's just not there for moncada right now and it's unfortunate because i really thought he could break out this year and be a monster. You almost wonder how much the kovic getting covered last year. In as one of those guys that really struggled with it talked about really struggling with it. How it's still affecting them. Yeah exactly because it was so impactful. Last year she still having issues. Maybe causing some extra fatigue what Let's go into the waiver..

"That and it's listen. It's it's the difficult balance no doubt about it but i feel like it's one that struck the point where the sources with whom i'm dealing understand that when they're giving the information that i'm not going to weaponize it or use it for personal value in anyway that that i tried to do things as ethically as humanly possible because if i don't then it's gonna be obvious and i'm gonna look like a fraud and that's the very last thing that i ever wanna do. You know do do it now. Doing things up. It's important and i'll give you one example one thing That i have evolved to do is when i know that a player does not know that he has been traded. Which happens more often than you would think I will wait for him to find out. Because i don't think it's fair for somebody to find out on twitter that he has been traded. I don't think that's right. I like there's there's just a. There's a human part of this that sometimes when people are chasing scoops gets lost and and it showed up in the the fake tweet fake tweets that were picked up. By by other media people tweets jeff tweets. Yeah there were. There were multiple fe. Jeff passan's Who were out there. The first one Duke some pretty high profile folks into thinking that Kris bryant went to the yankees. That wasn't great. But but the one that i'm talking about is there was a fake jeff. Who said that is it bad that i'm going through. Think you're going fake jefferson and of fo- passing There was a beau. Passan who Said that joey barton. Lamont wade were traded for chris. Bryant first off that would have been stupid trade. Nobody with any baseball sense would have seen that. Look be real. But beyond that got amplified by a blue checkmark who did not delete it and lamont outweighed thought that he had been traded and was out by it. I don't blame him because he's been fantastic for the giants this year and so when things like that happen i like i get that people are just trying to have fun. And it's oddly. Flattering to think that somebody wants to imitate you. it's weird but but the but flattering still. I just wished people understood that these things have a cost and that even if baseball players are out there making you know large sums of money and living the sorts of lives of luxury that so many of us wish we could Our desire to that When somebody's mom or wife or Best friend or whatever it is sees this That affects that person's life and that's honestly it's just not fair. "lamont wade" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"But i could be guy that steps up in In the future a couple years down the road he sounds like he is a good developmental piece. That has started off on the right foot. Which once again positive things about. This draft class is huge. The steelers six round. Pick quincy rochet once again. A lot of people the opposite of isaiah louder milk roche as someone who goes to the second round but slipped all the way till the back half of the sixth round. The steelers were able to scoop them up at their edge depth and he will compete with caches marsh to be the pittsburgh steelers fourth outside linebacker. The could potentially carry five outside guys And include martian that lineup. But if rochet to pass marsh on the depth chart they might even just roll in the season with four guys Once again once they signed. Melvin ingram de chance of any sort of playing time For marsh or rochet slipped significantly Really because now. Those depth issues had been solved. But both those guys have mentioned specifically the rookie. Rochet will be asked to do some things on special teams. There's no problems with that. And rochet has the ability to kind of bulk up now develop his run stuffing ability and kind of just round out his game. We know he's a good pass rusher but once again he is one of those guys that could struggle against the running college. Nfl tackles are only going to be better than that so having rochet being able to sit behind will really arguably the best edge rusher in football and teacher what a developing guy alex highsmith and one of the bed. Best edge rushers. The nfl is seen the last ten years in. Melvin ingram. he's only going to learn from some of the best in the game and he will get to learn and develop under those guys for at least a year before moving up the depth chart and perhaps being the the steelers third outside linebacker himself in twenty twenty two after quincy rochet. The steelers went with trae norwood with their first seventh round pick. He looks like he's fighting to be one of the steelers backup safeties. There was some rumors that he might be involved in that. Nickel cornerback competition. Sure things change but right now that nickel cornerback spot. It's of highlighted by antoine brooks junior. Who's been making a ton of place throughout camp. And then arthur mullet behind him What should be a spirited contest to see who lands that job both those guys by all means have been reportedly having a nice little offseason for themselves getting orthopedic busting their pots and could be some big time players for the steelers but for traynor would he will be competing really to be the backup behind me fitzpatrick and if he can not pan out like the way mike tomlin was obviously hired him after draft then he could be guy that to place a decent amount of special teams and could offer the steelers safety couple of stops off here and there because we know make fitzpatrick is a guy that's been playing one hundred percent of the snaps and really just been kind of pretty much staying. Strictly that free safety spot the steelers might be able to let me play a little bit more freely. If they had a talented free safety behind him that could allow me to move around. So maybe trade norwood could be that guy that a lot of steeler fans were hoping me cooker would be brought in to play that role specifically Hooker of course is rumored to have to be signing a deal with the dallas cowboys. Which at the time of this recording is not official yet the steelers other seventh round pick of course was big presley harvard in the third the massive punter out of georgia tech. He's still listed as the steelers. Backup punter and backup holder. There really isn't any issues with this. Of course the steelers are going to give pretty much. Every veteran the opportunity to keep their job. That's really how this team roles but you know this team has been frustrated with jordan berry in years past they try to replace him last year But there replacement dustin colquitt struggled himself which led to a jordan. Barry coming back out but joined bury struggles when the temperature turns. That's usually when he kind of d- flops the steelers might say if it's a neck and neck competition role of harvard in the third just because they don't know he's more of an unknown in those cold weather situations Where we know jordan berry has struggled in recent years. I wouldn't be surprised if harvard third wins a spot. Really if i was a betting man. I put my money on harvard third to be the guy. The steelers used their last draft pick on him for reason. And that is to be the guy to be the punter of the pittsburgh steelers not just here in twenty twenty one but for the foreseeable future so those are all the draft picks that the pittsburgh steelers made this year and really. There's nothing been nothing but positive stories coming out for all nine of those guys. We really haven't heard too much out of the undrafted guys. I know there are some high hopes on shaker brown and lamont wade amongst others but really nothing is kind of jumped off the page with them. Maybe that can turn once we hit. preseason action and those guys get a decent chunk of snaps for themselves as well as these rookies. We talked about because really once you stop the pads on and getting a gametime situ situations you're going to see the guys that step up and the guys that fade into the background so we will check back in with these rookies as time goes on.

"Which seems like a lot to me. eleven players are. We're not even halfway through the season And then on wednesday we had a couple more. Shohei ohtani incredible. It's incredible what he's doing not that he's doing hitting and pitching what he's doing at. The plate is unbelievable. And i think he's going to get a lot of mvp votes over vladimir guerrero junior if he keeps doing what he's doing pitching and hitting like disease. He's not hitting much worse than vlad and lamont wade of course because of everybody playing the diamondbacks It's gonna put up numbers. I mean that what's happened. Arizona's hard to believe. It's hard to believe you can have a road losing streak like that amount wait. I don't think we need to discuss time to wait. They're not the only ones with a really long road losing streak. I was kinda surprised to see how many teams have had some really poor outcomes. What can you do with that information and fantasy is it s only or is it a standard road. Yeah i think it is a little bit more. Dfs only i'm the one year long impact airs colorado's just because we know the cores road an impact. I do worry that that is widening. I mean colorado has been epic poor offense on the road but they've always been kind of a problem on the road haven't they have. But especially if do get to the point they trade trevor story. Those final two months could be to the level of this seattle. In cleveland and detroit. Detroit really was the one in april and may for opposing starting pitchers when you were hosting colorado. It could be to that level where you're talking almost record-setting match speaking record-setting. It's time for tristan. This thing again about the closers -tituted to.

"That's this game just started. Get the ball hard, his first time up or the first giant head. He swings here, and it's one high and deep to left center field. This one on its way It is gone. Heaven. Longoria was not waiting around. He crushed that thing. A two run homer, the And they said it couldn't be done. Here's the picture. There's a high drive by Lamont Wade Soaring drive to right field way back there and put it on those Pillot way, Junior. As his first home run as a giant. Here's the Through to pitch and there's a swing and a high drive of the deep left center field. In the second day in a row. Duvan goes deep. Maybe he does have a little Bambino in him. So it's 4 to 1 giants on the pitch. Swing and a Miss Heathrow in the big hook and struck it out on the Giants win their fourth in a row. Fourth in a row, the best record in the National League and on June 1st.

"It's time to go in the booth. And it's time to bring in our good friend Mike Kruk. Oh, Kruk. What's going on home room? How you been? Excellent, sir. It's a pleasure to chat ball with you. Out an oracle park right now. What do you What did you think of last night's game? I mean so many different ways to unpack it. But, you know, the mike talked and grab the great performance from the offense against Kenley Jansen, the 10th inning. How do you sum that up? Oh, my God. That was so much fun. Do you know how much fun you those were? The days you live for? Is a broadcaster. It's so much fun because Well, that game was being played. Everybody anticipated everything about that game. Giants fans were anticipating a two out three run home run by Austin Barnes. Going? Oh, my God. He's gonna hit a homer. Oh, my God is gonna hand boom. He hits a home run. Then the very next guy comes up and it's pools that's like, Oh, my God, he's gonna get over. Oh, my God, and he hits one over the wall and talk man goes over and gets it. I want those of the games. You watched your partners, and last night it was John Miller and Dave Fleming. And they just get so into the moment that it's just it's contagious for me, and it becomes entertaining. I mean, I love it. When when type gets into Ah, call or John or Dave gets into a call. I mean, it's not just something that is on the top. I mean, it's deep rooted and it it was fun. They needed that game last night. That was a playoff game for the Giants. I say whatever you want they needed if they could not lose that game with a three run lead in the ninth. And they did, and they came back and won it number legal fashion, which, Yeah, telling you is one of my favorite games of the year. No question. No question at all. It was really an incredible performance from this Giants team. And you know, you can look at that catch that talking maiden so many different ways, Mike, but one thing that we did on the postgame show last night was We played the pensive defense catch in 2014, the NLDS against the Washington Nationals, and you immediately jumped in on that broadcast and said, that's one of the best catches. You'll ever see in right field that Oracle Park. I would argue that this might talk me catch is probably one of the best catches you'll see at Dodger Stadium. That's a very high outfield wall. Eight FT, and he went over them the wall to go in. Grab that and bring it back. Well, I mean, he timed it perfectly, and he had a fly ball to work with. I mean, it would have been a plan. Don't know if he could have gotten back in time it had been a line drive. There was from behind to it, so he did have a chance to go back. But because of that wall in the height of that wall, you have to time it perfect because you have to be the top at the top of the jump. You can't be coming down and snagging it. You have to time it perfectly, and that was the beauty of it. When you go back and look at the replay of the high backhander, the overhead backhander, he peered it. It's right in the sweet spot. Had. I mean, it just stuck there, and it was a collective around that ballpark. Everybody was stunned, including Mike talk. You could look at this Giants game and point out so many different heroes. Whether it would be Buster Posey, whether it would be Mike talk man, Evan Longoria hitting the ball to the right field wall against Kenley Jansen. But I want to point out Lamont Wade's contributions that this is a guy who does not have a whole lot of experience at first base, and I think he won himself a job with that performance. The Giants have the option someone to get warmer. Flora's back on the roster day crew, and I think that Lamont Ways performance last night helped him stick around ahead of Jason Vossler..

"Every day winning every day Women and it's just you know whether to Duggar Homer or whether it's d Sclafani and four relievers. But yes, triple about A yes, triple. It's just having Lamont Wade going to play first base that was cool. Everything's humming for the 23 14 giants, who stay in first place and go at it again today, right back at it with Kevin Gausman. I'm giving the ball to your ace at 3 35 against former giant Tyler Anderson about that all this stuff to talk about my cocoa on the Yuma Guest line, Mike Happy Friday morning to you. How are you? Yeah, I'm happy, right? Yeah, man, It's just being left. That made me happy. It was. It was so much fun to watch and, uh He's going in. You were getting all the text from Mike passing. You see who's the PR guy with the Giants is with the club right now. And so you're kind of putting it together. Crawford didn't feel well because you'd had a shot. Second shot, so he was feeling some covert effect to the shot and then Belt who was originally in the lineup got scratched because of some type of tightness in this side. You're thinking, man, how they're going to put this together, and then you saw the line up and you know, Lamont, wait over first base, and you know he's kind of Had restored the bond is short and so you feel like okay, Here's an opportunity. To pee the bed defensively. And they shined. They shine the thing that I look, I guess you get kind of a skewed opinion for me because I'm an old picture, but I love defense. When I was pitching. I would like to get the most defensive team behind me, even if it's sex, but sacrificed offense. I wanted people to catch the ball and I'm not Lamont wait or first base made to play the game. There was a ground ball to third base. And Evan Longoria picked it up all the time. The world through it. I used to this nasty one hop and if it play doesn't get made that that ending starts to go weird against him, right in the modern way picked this thing clean, I'd say on a scale of 1 to 10 of difficulty was it was up there in the high H, maybe the low nines. That's how hard to pick was on the short hop. He makes that play and then resealed. The bond picks it clean. The whole of the whole game was clean game and I just love that about this team. The fact that they To play. They have so many guys who could place different positions. They could represent themselves with the gloves. I think it's so important with this club in their success. I mean, actually, I mean, who knew Lamont Wade would be out at first base last night? I mean, that's just What Farhaan has built in game and it's just the divers until they're building their identity. We're watching this identity play out right in front of us here. And as you mentioned just And no errors. Last night is the deal and by the way, just kind of just, you know, there's a lot of things to talk about it. I'm just looking at the box score, and I'm just kind of just marveling at how Mike talk man has just become Absolute regular Maine state part of this lineup, Mike, I mean, it would mean I know it's a lot of things to talk about. We will, but I was just looking at the box score, and I wanted to say this. You're one for five, scored a run last night, but You're pretty much in every day, dude, Mike? Yeah, I like him in there, and I think one of the significant things he did in his one for five night he saw a ton of pitches. And I think that's so important. Guys who were in the top of life that they're able to see pitches. Get, you know, I mean, hey, I think he had. I don't know how many pitches? Yeah, but there were a lot. I think he had 17 17 pitches in his first two of bets. Yeah, I can't begin to explain how that wears on the guy on the mound because you know if you have a guy who's leading off And he's getting 17 pitches out here. You know, it's set it up for a big inning because then you get to the next guy. And now here comes the beef, and now you throw in close to 20 pitches. And That's when you make mistakes, and now you're you're set up to make mistakes in the middle of the lineup, so the importance of Ah leadoff hitter who could grind it and get pitches out. It is enormous, and that's what he does. That's what the Giants do. They see more pitches than any other team in baseball, and I think that's one huge part of their success. They get starting pitchers out of the game They get in the bullpens early. And that's significant when you take one of your best arms on your team and get him out early. I mean, even if you get out and ending or two outs early, because the pitch cow that determines who comes out I mean, you've done your job, You set yourself up for opportunity. And and talk, but I mean, he's really good at that. It's incredible and you bring up this point That's been written about this week, Terry Crowley wrote about it. Farhaan talked about it on can be our with Tober, Kruger and Brooks. That's this phrase that they were introducing in spring training culture. Time of possession. So funny how you know it's funny like baseball's baseball in like forever. It's you know, you want to drive a pitch counts and you want to work at a nice pace, but they've now invented this thing called Time of Possession and You know, I don't know if you think it's getting kind of funny or silly or whatever or greater, but I just love your thoughts on this idea of time of possession for people don't know..

"Crowley. He covers the Giants for the Bay Area News group carries nice enough to hang out with us on the home against line here in the Tolbert, Kruger and Brooks show. Carrie, We always appreciate the time how you doing, man. Um, well, especially now that baseball's coming back looking forward to head on down to the desert soon. How are you guys? We are doing fine and we share your sentiment. You know what baseball's here? Let's go ahead and get it on. Unfortunately, it sure seems like When it comes to the National League, a specific in the National League West. We kind of know who the big dogs are gonna be the Dodgers and the Padres. But I don't think that's gonna make this giant season any less interesting and Intriguing is the rotation eyes that the not necessarily the biggest issue on this team, but is that something that really needs to be sorted out and hashed out in spring training and when we get answers when we get so once we get to opening day? I think it's certainly the biggest concern right now, Rod and you look at the rotation the Giants are planning around right now. It's Kevin Gosman, Johnny Cueto, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and then a competition for the fifth starter job. And right now you look at that and say the front runner. Is Logan Web, but I would not be surprised at all if they added one more major league free agent Edition. Maybe swing a trade somewhere with using their excess infielder BOPE in depth and potentially signing two or three guys to minor league deals who can compete for jobs in the rotation like they did last year with Trevor Cahill. Thais Ross few years before that, with Derek Holland just because Go from 60 games to 162 games is a monumental challenge in itself to do it with the rotation. The Giants are trying to do it with where you've got a number of guys who are trying to come back from bounce back seasons or coming off of injuries. I mean, that is a really, really difficult task, not even to mention the division that they're in. Center field. I mean, they were rumored to be after Jackie Bradley Jr. He still hasn't signed. It Sounds like he wants maybe a four year deal or maybe a five year deal. I don't think I can't see them going that long with him with all the outfielders they have. In the pipeline. Where do you think they stand with Bradley? You think they're out? You think they're still monitoring? You think there's a chance? It seems like everybody's kind of blocking it and a long term deal for him. Yeah, I would imagine they're monitoring Larry. I don't think that anything is likely. And I wouldn't say that they're probably even in on Jackie Bradley Jr at this point, especially after the addition of Lamont Wade via the trade with Minnesota and trading Sean Anderson to get the left handed hitting center field prospects. But I think that they'll move forward with Tommy lost Ella being the left handed edition, the bath that they were talking about that they were looking for, and I think that list l A in the infield really does compliment some of their other left handed hitters. Well, you looked the lineup. They could have against righties. You have less Stella, you have Alex Dickerson, You have Mikey Stransky, Brandon Belt. That's a really tough quartet of hitters to navigate through and then in center field. I would say that Marie she had a bomb is probably the front the front runner to get most of the playing time there, but expect way to compete in spring training. Maybe Steven Duggar will find his way into the mix. He's still on the 40 man roster in a few years ago, the judge, we're very excited about him, and so I just think that center field is no longer as big of a priority because they did address that left handed hole in their lineup by adding less Stella. Carry. Which one of the young guy is, Uh, you are most likely to come up and play and get some games and some of bats or some endings this year. The really tough question to answer, Tom because all of the young or damn it answer. I can't answer it. Well, all the young really exciting guys gonna be playing in San Jose, it lo Wei and Eugene it Hi, eight this year, and so you're going to see Marco Luciano Hunter Bishop Louise to review you're gonna be hearing those names all season, but they're really not gonna have a chance to impact this Giants lineup if there was one guy Who I said by the middle of the summer or the end of the season. If he really had an opportunity, it would be Elliott Ramos. And, Of course, Joey Bart's going to be in the mix. We know that he'll probably start the season in Triple A, but eventually he's going to be in that tandem with Buster Posey. But Ramos is the guy who they're looking for. To make major strides. I'd say, probably double a triple A first half of the season. They have to add him. The 40 Man roster by the end of this winter, anyway, so you might as well take a look at him at the end of the year, particularly with the power production. He can give you to see if he can still be that premium center field prospect that they were hoping for when they first drafted him back in 2017. And so I think that hopes were pinned high on Ramos right now. We're talking Giants with Terry Crowley, who covers the Giants for the Bay Area News Group, a group led by the San Jose Mercury News. Carrie is joining us on the Omagh guess line. Do you think the Giants are going to out of necessity have to spend Portion of the beginning of the season..

Terry Crowley Kevin Gosman Alex Dickerson Anthony DeSclafani Mikey Stransky Johnny Cueto Trevor Cahill Sean Anderson Derek Holland Alex Wood Steven Duggar Elliott Ramos Marie Bradley Joey Bart 60 games Brandon Belt Larry Bay Area News Group Stella
