"Do also congratulate you on your achievement with the Smithsonian and. I know your mom is very proud of you. Thank where's where's may have asked questions even just come here please. Two things real quick one just to clarify a point of correction about normal. She was the first black licensed female architect in California. The other thing is the constant sort of return to how we have been victims of Miss Education or under education. How important you feel inculcating are true histories authentically told by us today into curriculum would be in freeing just providing knowledge that you feel is essential for particularly our young people to go beyond where they've been able to go so far. I have a simple theory about imagery and television and education is all about inspiring people and I think the majority demographics get inspired all day long but reading history about their history and their achievements in just there just all good but it's rare that we in particularly in architecture read about our success. Our journey our knowledge. So I think just by showing and illustrating those kinds of success stories. Even do something about Norma something about Paul Williams. That's in our curriculum. That it starts to young people will just be automatically. Have that kind of impression that all okay. Somebody like me is doing it. I I know I could do that so that that's where I see that need and education. I give you props in your shoes with some shoes shoes. My Son my son game to him for Christmas. I taste you mentioned earlier. About how buildings speak different things to you and you know how senior project to take years and years. How do you maintain keeping your vision along with like Nike loss with like politics or things like that considering a project? One of the things that that keeps me motivated on these long projects is to have like in the queue. More projects like crenshaw's opening this year. Hopefully we're working on the west side extension. Which is a subway to the sea under Wilshire? Boulevard that's not gonNA open for another six years but see that's in the queue and you think the crenshaw project's GonNa be transformative watch. This Wilshire. Project the Wilshire Corridor is GonNa explode you going to see high rises. It's going to be like New York data. It may take ten twenty years but you look twenty years from now. The Wilshire corridor between libra and Beverly Hills scholar. Like New York is going to look like New York. And so those are the kinds of things that keep me motivated. We're also doing the planning for the Crenshaw. North Project which means it's GonNa the Crenshaw Line will extend from exposition all the way up into Hollywood. That's going to be transformative so to have the opportunity to be vision in all of this transformation that that just gives me you know ten years ago by it just keeps going. Thank you so much for being here what I went to school. I went to Columbia in Chicago and I was going for interior architecture and anybody who looked like me so I wound up being a project manager for eight years I was burned out and pushed out by the Ivory Tower of it. All and now that I'm doing my own thing. How do you see people like me? Who are not necessarily of this neighborhood are of this people. I want to be able to give back. But how do we stop thinking that blackness as one monolith because I don't fit in I don't like you or I don't have your experience for us to be able to come together and be accepted in these neighborhoods? Which maybe we haven't been from originally but are part of because of our culture. I'm sorry. What is your name. Allison Allison one thing. I would recommend is to be active in organizations cultural organization professional organizations and I stress the word active noma the National Organization of minority architects every year we have a project pipeline is a summer camp for to introduce young kids to architecture and to to just be involved in that and then it's just door start to open you start to meet people you start to network Lamar Park. Has We love Lamar Park. Ns Cy young people like you that that are promoting Lamar Park. You have to search Kinda get in. Then you start to see this this network. But that's what I would really really encourage you to do even if you just start with noma that it just branches from their La has a tremendous network of black folks who are actively trying to make a difference in a in a positive way. Okay here's Shaw. Here is the next question based on all of your years of studying architecture. What why philosophies understandings about life about people have you gained over time? What have you career? What else ideas that? You share with people based on the ideas of architecture. That's deep number. One philosophy number one you you never give up. You never give up number two. I C the humanity of everybody. I see the human person I and I think that's important whether White Black Brown yellow or whatever I look for the humanity in a person and I think it's a mid western thing where you get people to benefit without just cause you're white. I'm not thinking. Oh you know you're a bad person or or anything like that. I look at their eyes. Fill their spirit. And then I listen so I think that it gives me a sense of confidence in any place that I go that I look for the humanity in a person and then go from. There is fairly simple i. I don't have a complex set of rules or you know I really base my life on on Biblical principle. Follow my passion there. There's something in everybody that you know you know that's what what you. WanNa do and it doesn't matter that will maybe it's not gonNA make a lot of money or maybe everybody else isn't doing it fast what you WanNa do. If that's where your passion is driving you. You should continue to pursue it. I roll it. Thank you so much for you both doing this and for the Center for doing this. I have two questions. One is short one requires detail the first one. What pushback if any have you experienced when it comes to using more sustainable materials and things can containers shipping containers or recycled materials when it comes to actually contributing to that structure because I know there is pushback and then the second part of the question is what pushback have you experienced when it comes to making our cities look futuristic? You know what I'm talking about so you speak to that for a little bit. The first question sustainable materials to things cost and logistics cost is is simple but sustainable materials. The brother here today Richard. Tim and he has a system of glass. It's not solar panels but this glass can transform into electric energy and so I was immediately intrigued and interested. Our my question is cost and so he gave me the answer that it can pay for itself and plus tax incentives and then. The second question is logistics logistics from an architectural perspective. Is You already I? C B O Number Research. Report number has been used before. What are some of the drawbacks that you don't know about yet? So those are the two major pushbacks if you will and it and it takes innovation and courage to take that step. I definitely want to follow up with ten. No one brother and I wanted you know see see anyway. I can help a brother. Who's and that's another thing. It's like if you see a brother or sister. There's about something positive. Y'All got to open up a door. You know just what we should be doing now. The second question. Repeat that second question I feel like our cities are not looking how.

"Like like active gang glorifying by like self presidents, like a motivation sofas. I think going to speak about leaking Meany, maybe only the commute. I know not that. He is. You know what I mean? You know, everybody says I want to be a rapper best only extent rapper basketball player. He was trying to get people in the business of ANR producing things like that teaching them the technical aspect of business, south LA resident marquees Kemper at yesterday's vigil for rapper nipsy hustle. If see was shot and killed Sunday outside has south LA clothing store. The marathon the suspect is a twenty nine year old man named Eric Holder yesterday. Several people were injured two critically when things got heated at the memorial. Nipsy staff has shaken the city, and that's because he was someone trying to make the city better. Here's mayor Eric Garcetti today. Nipsy Russell was an artist who touched our city and the lives far beyond the city of angels throughout this country. And this world he was somebody who was a gifted and brilliant artist an entrepreneur who found global success was working closely with the city to help save lives and transform lives. Even as he was doing that for himself. He invested in the neighborhood he came from. And even though he was a former gang member he spoke out against gun violence here to talk about his activism and his music is NPR music. Hip hop writer. Rodney Carmichael hierarchy. Great to have you. And also joining us Gary Kennedy times reporter and also music writer, high Garrick Hello Garrick in your story today. You note that there's a big big billboard of nipsy outside the Baldwin hills mall, and basically that billboard is meant to be a celebration of his Grammy nomination. But now as you, right? It's more of a memorial. Can you talk about his place in the community? You know, it's it's really interesting. I moved to this neighborhood about at a nine months ago lived in Hollywood for years. So I saw totally disconnected from any sort of black community unquotable because it's so spread out in the city stuff. LA, you know, especially Crenshaw Lamar park is areas where there's so many of, you know, living here working here. So I would pass that billboard every day. That was always such a reminder of you know, this guy who was really trying to make this entire community better. But that's just you know. That's that's one photo. There's actual evidence of these things that he was doing. I mean, I've I've said it in the peace, and I started in a couple of other interviews, what's so cool about you know, how he was murdered was that he was murdered in front of, you know, his own store, but it was a store in the an strip mall that he had purchased a month ago that he was going to redevelop some low income housing, it's a retail. So he's always headed mind on how to make the neighborhood better. And that was just one of so many different ways. He was doing it. Right. And he had a whole idea for neighborhood revitalization. Right. That to keep the money in the neighborhood and make it a you know to sort of find a little bit against the gentrification. That is coming. Yeah. I mean, he was putting all of his dollars back into the neighborhood. It's something that you just don't see any artists newer any celebrity for that matter. Yeah. You hear, you know, stories here and there, but this was what his entire brand was about. And I think that's the big difference. And I think that's why you're seeing the level of grieving and mourning the way that we are is because there are so many people. Who have been touched by him. You don't have to go far and prince outta here. Lipsey hustle story. Time doing something. Great for somebody and Rodney talk about listening to music described his music and his his album victory lap. That was his first major label recording. Right. But you know, this you have been putting in work for for many years more than a decade, and it's the work that he really put in as an independent artists that enabled him to come back to major labels after he split from an earlier deal and have the kind of leverage that most artists in his position don't have to be able to partner with a record label and put out victory left. You know, he's he's really renowned for this this business model that he brought to release in mix tapes, you know, in in in two thousand thirteen he put out a mid state. And it was he really does rooted the industry in a lot of ways. I mean, this is the time when artists would be until that they should give their musical way for. Free on digital platforms because you know, the music industry was dying and he released a mid state and sold each county four hundred dollars, and he so he sold out thousand copies, and you know, I think it really put the industry on alert that there was value in the music, and he was just a really smart marketing guy in terms of the buzz that he created around that and he continued to use those kinds of, you know, marketing tactics throughout his career to create his own buzz. Let me just play a clip of him actually talking about this here. He is talking to the music magazine complex five years ago. Again, this is where the strip mall that he bought and had his clothing store. This is where he originally sold his mix tapes indirect role.

"You that right now. So she decides to go to UCLA, but she's still tentative and she's afraid to succeed. They were having a meeting during her freshman year, and there's a sports psychologist there, and they say for every gymnast to go around the room and to share with the greatest obstacle keeping you from success and she said in front of her whole team and the coaching staff. I just don't want to be great again because she was acquainting greatness with that pain. Wow. That's really revealing. She grew up in Seattle three brothers. Her dad worked for a utility company her mom coached, various sports. And then when she starts showing promise like happens in so many of these Olympic hopeful households. They moved to Kansas City, or they'll move to Iowa or whatever. Whatever the best coaches are. Yeah. Yeah. So they did that and she made the junior national team when she was twelve and spent years competing at this elite level, but she calls it all that toxic toxic environment a lot of body shaming. She said that she was told she looked like she swallowed an elephant or a pig. Whichever was more fitting that day. She says I was compared to a bird that was too fat to lift itself off the ground. There are tremendous pressures are heard in that gymnastics were also in figure skating, those two sports have a lot of body shaming aspects to the training and to the ramp up to competition. It's heartbreaking to hear it. You know? 'cause they're young girls. Most of the time who are shocker fighting so much already and to to hear their that their self esteem is damaged that way. I I find just heartbreaking especially in this formative years because then you're screwed in your mind for for good for a long time. She writes a blog now about body. Acceptance. I guess it would be with another woman there at UCLA. So she clearly still puts a lot of time into accepting her body because of all those years when she was told it wasn't going to be acceptable yet. Tonya Harding struggled with that. Remember? Yeah. I mean, I think anybody associated with this entire world struggles with it. They just may not want to talk about it. All right coming up next readers. But by the way, just as we wrap that story up though, it is great that she dropped out. She got back in she's clearly now surrounded by a more nurturing environment, and because of this viral video she's able to tell the story as you say have the blogs she's writing poetry. There are a lot of things associated now with a new beginning for her and she can get into gymnastics in a way that is just fun for her. And I love the the the story about the coach Valery who when she came over to UCLA. She didn't even talk to her about gymnastics for like weeks. They would just go and get a coffee or lunch or whatever. And she would talk to her about life, and all of that wouldn't even bring up gymnastics because she was trying to to step so carefully around the the land mines going on that young girl's mind, what you hope for a coach you help build a complete person. These coaches are such critical figures in these young athletes lie. You want to create an entire individual not someone who just plays tennis, not someone who just ice skates. Not someone who just is a gymnast. And so as you say clearly that coach and that figure is just that person who was looking to build the complete individual. Yes, they're not all urban Myers air. Good people out there in the collegiate coaching world. All right. We will go to the professional baseball world when we come back. That's a loose. Well, yesterday's professional.
