"It's how many it's you know forty years since things really started to come to light and then you know twenty years since the boston globe broke their thing. And you know it's been maybe the movie had to come out for. They really took it seriously. Maybe maybe spotlight had to come out before Before anyone at the vatican oh well if mark ruffalo is involved. I guess we should take this series. Well okay so. I just want to make sure that we're all clear on this so n- now is the catholic it is. It is wrong for a catholic priest pedophile. Apparently they american. Now they frown they now the the just wrote these rules. They're just okay cool. That's what they've done so now. They've made it so that like the there's a they've taken away the discretion of the bishops to extent and said that they d- if a priest is caught doing certain things they are to be different here to lose. Their job is priests okay they are. They are done Which is great that the that is an actual step forward. We'll see if it actually happens rhinos but also it's it is a quote unquote crime. They're not talking about like reporting anybody to the cops. But within their organization it's a crime to cover it up to so oh the bishops are kind of on the line on that as well It's also nice and this is nice not okay for them to abuse Adults either so maybe now have a firm stance on on abuse. I'm not not not cool. Not pretty pretty pretty firm. It's it's it's a lot less squishy than it was and we'll see how well implemented one thing's for sure they're not implementing it right away. You wouldn't want to jump in feet first on something like this. So everybody's got until december to get it all to get all of their pedophilia out of their system. Well good good good and so it's basically love. The pedophile hate pedophilia. That's it they would never would never treat pedophile as badly as they do. Gay people. But no. So i got. I'm going to give him props like a. They definitely took some strong positions on this This much-needed change that they should have done. That should have been obvious hundreds or thousands of years ago. Like this. the the no brainer. It's of no brainers like the easiest call to make ever. But i'm going to give them partial credit for actually making it. There's a there's an amazing Quote if i can find it from from one of the guys inside the thing archbishop manet who said that. Here's here's how he put it and it's just come on guys phrasing. This is from the vatican news site. He said in recent years quote. The relationship of interpenetration between justice and mercy has at times been misrepresented. Are you serious. You're gonna use the phrase interpenetration when you're talking about this issue you fucking idiot. Righty lip dan. Oh my god. It's got something on his mind. That would make freud cigar explode then louisiana the legislature has just approved a resolution. And that will order the flags in the state flown at lowered to half-mast every january. Twenty second in To mourn the the innocent children who've lost their lives due to abortion. Oh my god children. They're not even calling them. Babies the fetus. Right eighty children working children. They're calling it the day of tears. Oh god say those innocent children could also grown up to be adult so you could say mourning. The innocent adults who were were the victims of of of abortion will apparently that was kind of the motivation of one of the sponsors of the bill who whose mother had been It's one of these stories right where it's like. The doctor told her that she needed to abort and and the mother just she didn't she couldn't. She couldn't do it. And so now. There's a a Pro-life so-called pro-life state senator. I guess who are. Maybe she's in the house. I don't remember which one she is in. The story doesn't really matter that much. She's sharing this this horrible. What if what if and it's like. Oh sweetheart on. But yeah they They're joining a there. The first state to do this. But there's actually a five. Oh one c. Three that's a nonprofit organization called the day of tears that is promoting this across the nation. They want their goal is to have every flag in america flown at half staff on january twenty second every year in remembrance and honor and in mourning for the over thirty Sixty three million lives that have been lost to abortion. I have to install a flagpole out in front of my house just to not lower it for day. I absolutely the dan. I had the same thought. I was need to start something where people make sure on january twenty second they are flying the flag all the way to the top like tippy top. No room for any misinterpretation there. planned parenthood flag. Yeah absolutely right like and if they don't have a flag then they need to get one. You can just put their logo on some. They won't get mad as an sort of a hobbyist. Lalla gist dan. No that's like the worst kind of flack. Don't just put your logo on a flag. A flag dan. I i got a second flag. Whatever i want to. I can make a flag out of anything i want. Yes you can up. Your pizza can be a flag. Oh my gosh well All right everybody. Let's let's put on our our grownup seatbelts for just a second. Because this is this is the story you you probably encountered it because it made international news. It's a big one and it's rough the timeline on this one is just that as soon as white people came to the americas they were awful to the already here residents of this of this continent and they continued that pretty much indefinitely so The the latest story comes from British columbia out of the kamloops indian residential school. Now if you don't know the phrase indian residential school it refers to schools in canada their their their equivalents existed all over the united states as well where they would basically kidnap native american children first nations children out of their households and forcibly put them into schools. That were meant to anglicized them to to. Why defy them to indoctrinate them into the obviously superior european culture and the way that you know that it's superior is that they kidnapped children So they did this for a long long time and only they didn't choose to treat these kids very well and by the way this was done initially by.

"Lonely but it does give us extra time to cook you know. Yukon control. The virus balked. What you can do something about is your shopping. You have full control life and what happens. If the Corona virus outbreak has second act. That's all still to come here on the world. It is unprecedented in human history. The number of people around the globe now on lockdown one of the only reasons were allowed to leave our homes to get food but the planet is not buying all the same thing so we thought we'd take global look at how people are stocking their pantries these days and how they cope when they can't find what they want. Here's the world's Bianca Hillier. Grocery shopping is a part of my week that I look forward to until now we'll read. Customers have been snapping everything in sight ancients flared at Woolworth's. When three women became involved in a toilet paper tussle move has prompted panic buying of basic necessities the recent panic buying the honey buying by the panic buying phenomenon preparing for a quarantine amid the krona virus. Pandemic has people panic buying food at my grocery store in Boston. They were out of peanut butter but people in different countries are stocking up on different foods though one item does seem to be pretty common. How star is talking to me. Sold OUT PASTA IS MY go-to there's less PASTA NORMAL PASTA IN ITALY. People are able to be a bit more picky like a running joke in Italy. But there's one type of Pasta Alitalia no by even fourteen and amy show like the long pending noodles. That don't have the bumps in it. They hate and when I went to the grocery stores. The only one that was available Samantha. Sleaze is an American studying psychology. In Brescia Italy Samantha has been quarantined for weeks with her roommate. Emmy Palmer a UK citizen. I thought it was a joke. Honestly yes I can wake zero week. One doesn't really believe how bad it was going to get. And we didn't start. Cook that much on food. Now Emi said going to the grocery store is a bizarre experience. And letting so one person in one person out at time at one is wearing masks of its name so in neighboring Austria is facing a similar reality. Tanya Meyer lives in Vienna and says the grocery store lines are like Christmas. Crowds Times ten. We talk about social distancing like I think about that trip to the grocery store and I think I was so stupid for going because we were all pushing each other through the aisles. Tanya has a family of six to feed so she filled her fridge freezer pantry an extra storage shed outside with enough food for weeks. Tanya used to live in Russia and friends there tell her that buckwheat a healthy hardy grain like keen wall is selling out in Moscow also in Russia. Sour cream is nowhere to be found. They put it on soup. They put it on pancakes. They put everything and so it was really funny for me. That in the store here in Vienna like other stuff was completely sold out like butter and stuff but there were plenty of sour cream should be reports out of Copenhagen say stores. They're running out of yeast. Baking is having its heyday. Around the world. Right now Samantha. In Italy is taking part. I've been hand making bread three weeks and like cinnamon rolls and everything. The need to make your own. Bread and by weeks of groceries is new and scary for a lot of people. But in Bismarck North Dakota Amalia Dylan said. People are used to buying in bulk. Because in winter it's too cold to leave your house. Amalia began stocking up weeks ago. She said the soup shelves are empty at the store but the meat section is totally full. Thanks to people who hunt in the region. There are definitely a lot of people here who have chest freezers full of me but venison and the Antelo and the fish like. They're not going to be buying meat on the other side of the globe. Meat is flying off. The shelves on Rica dubuisson lives in the North West Province of South Africa. It's bolcom Bull Tong. It's dried cured me kind of like beef. Jerky and unlike bread. It can be hard to make at home unless you're having a cow grazing in your backyard. And you have at times you actually make Bolton. I don't think anybody will be able to make their own. People are also filling their carts with groceries. That will make them feel better sometimes. You just need comfort food for Samantha and Emmy in Italy. That means a little taste of home. My grandparents are actually sending me a package that weighs eight kilos like sixteen pounds of just macaroni and cheese. My Mum put in the mail yesterday. Three bucks is full of just kipps and as a particularly British chip that we just can't live without coq. Months and months me and Samantha added that the Lotteria around the corner from them is offering delivery service. So they're doing okay. Catharine Johannson Boyd. A consumer psychologist Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. England says seeking out comfort. Food is normal. We're buying things that we think is going to help. I failed at the perhaps. The isolation home is a bit more bearable. Whatever it is you have a particular fondness of Catherine says in a time of fear and unknowns. People want to feel like they're in control. You know you can't control the virus but what you can do. Something about is your shopping. You have full control of that so by stockpiling you feel like you taking charge you doing something that somehow has meaning when actually of course it doesn't make sense it doesn't make sense. She says because leaders around the world have promised their citizens that grocery stores are going to stay open even in the places most impacted by the krona virus. Still there's advice. People who are stocking up emmy in Italy says make sure you have enough tea and in North Dakota. Amalia says remember the basics. Don't forget seasonings and herbs because you're GONNA WANNA mix it up. Okay got it. Don't panic but also I could really do with that peanut butter right now for the world. I'm being Hillier. In the desperate search to treat patients with cove in nineteen. A variety of medicines are being tested including drugs used to treat. Hiv The hope for success though might be overblown at least in the short term. Stephen Gov Varela Gist and a professor of Biochemistry at Columbia University Medical Center. I asked him why some scientists think. Hiv treatments might be useful in combatting the outbreak. There are many similarities of some of the proteins that the viruses and code so as targets. There's hope there's expectation there's evidence that some drugs that work on each targets also have some activity against the corona virus targets. But there's a lot of differences and a lot of the drugs that were developed for. Hiv very very specific to the HIV proteins. And they will not work against Toronto viruses. So how hopeful are you about going down this path at all only moderately? I think it'll be rare. That drug will be proved to be useful but in a way the HIV drugs. Give you at least a lead into the design of drugs for the corona virus. The whole idea that if a drug works for that thing could work for this thing I mean. It's a tantalizing narrative. Are you worried though that this kind of hope? Filled enthusiasm from politicians and the public for these sorts of treatments is premature. Yeah the important thing to me. Is that the history and the experience that we have with antivirals for HIV for HEP C. For flu really gives us a huge leg up on finding drugs for that corona viruses. Are you seeing a similar response from the public? With all the interest in chloroquine. That's used to combat malaria in combination with other drugs. That's the same thing that president trump is touted. Those drugs have a lot of problems of toxicity. And I think we really don't yet even know their applications. It's not immediately obvious. Answer to the problem as crisis unfolds. We've been witnessing some really unprecedented cooperation among scientists in the US around the world. There's been a sort of fast tracking of certain types of research. What are the upsides and downsides of accelerating that research? I basically think it's direct that people are collaborating and working at an unprecedented rate sharing reagents sequences and results incredibly for quickly. I think it's true across countries and China and we are sharing results very freely. I think companies are quite open to collaborations. Funding is often being provided by philanthropy. And people appreciate it's a crisis and they are responding. Remarkably well Stephen someone in the forefront in the field of what is your biggest worry as the research goes forward. Well it's just a race. It will be a race of when the first really effective treatments come online and when this crisis of the virus peaks the biggest concern to me is the hospital overload which might condition friends are dealing with. And it's GONNA be tough. Yeah Yeah and right there in New York your seemingly in the center of it in the United States. Yep WE'RE GONNA run out of bed so we're going to run out of masks we're going to run out of ventilators is going to be difficult. Where do you find optimism right now? I am actually really pretty optimistic about any rural drugs coming online soon. There are some very potent effective candidates. Coming along and many labs if we can get through the pipeline some of these really promising antivirals and we find a setting where we can get them used early in a patient. I think there's room for tremendous progress there and I think the longer scale in a year or two. I have great optimism about vaccines. I think this will be a virus that will be suitable for. Vaccines can take much longer. But I think those will come eventually as well. Well it is good to end on a hopeful note. A commodity in short supply these days. Stephen Gov Lalla Gist and Professor Biochemistry at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Thank you thank you. Several countries and territories in Asia have gotten praised for flattening the curve of the Corona Virus South Korea Hong Kong Taiwan and Singapore had cleared deliberate strategies to contain it and slowing the spread prevents healthcare systems from getting overwhelmed. But these places can't celebrate just yet they're now seeing a new spike in cases of covert nineteen. The world's Patrick win joins us from Bangkok. These countries and territories Patrick. The progress looked so promising. What happened the consensus seems to be that they were doing a lot of things right but some of these countries and territories let their guard down right so cases started resurging. You know the whole planet is shutting down now. All these countries are closing their borders. And so you have people from Taiwan from Hong Kong from South Korea who want to come home and some of those people that came home brought the virus back with them so what all of these countries are doing. They all have slightly different tactics. But what they're doing now is they're going to double back and aggressively hammer on. What was working the first time? So what did they do it? I that works so well well. The first thing is there's still scarred by past outbreaks. Everyone took it seriously from day. One I spoke to a doctor named Joseph John Infectious Diseases expert in Hong Kong. And he told me. Hey we've seen SARS so if was going to come out and say it was a hoax. That would be ridiculous..

"Going to be discussing a particular of example of construction. That is really just as amazing as you know. Making all these giant blocks bringing them together and building the pyramid but This particular example is also going to buck the traditional steps that we've discussed here and we're going to be looking at century's old Christian temples in Ethiopia that were we're not built from blocks of stone that were quarried over here and then brought together and then assembled into a building. No these are free reese standing monolithic churches that are each hewn from the solid. Red Volcanic Goria under laid by dark gray a basalt standing tall in the quarries from which they were sculpted so basically these were hewn out of solid stone. The quarry becomes the courtyard. Yeah it's a building that is not built but released from the earth. subtractive manufacturing of Marvel's it it is. It is amazing. I was not familiar with these until just last week when I was looking around for an episode For us to do and I was initially thought. Oh why don't we do Petra the the ruins in Jordan you know with the where the architecture is built into the side of this this kind of like ravine a situation right if you think you've never seen these these rock hewn Buildings you probably have their featured for example in Indiana Jones and the last crusade the show up in several several movies pet petro specifically in this case right so so is the no. Petro would be a good Episode started looking roundabout indie Petras fascinating. Perhaps we'll come back back to it but then I I was just looking around at other. Examples of of buildings had been hewn from stone. And then these just really stood out as the prime prime example like the most extreme example of what you could do with subtractive manufacturing of an entire building to bill to construct a building by not even constructing it by just carving away at solid stone until it is there with no need for bricks or mortar or would or nails or any of this architecture. Protect sure as sculpture. Yeah so where will you find these will you will find them. In lally Bella Ethiopia Ethiopia is of course the nation in eastern in Africa and they stood there at least since the late twelfth century CE though probably get into some of the dating in greater detail later later but I just a few notes about Ethiopia. In general modern Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world and the second most populous African nation after Nigeria Copa is also considered one of only two African nations never to be subjected to Long Term European colonization position the other being Liberia and to be more specific it was it was never it was never call an is during the nineteenth century period where so much of Africa was though it was occupied by Italy of during the Second World War but not not long enough for there to be like true lasting cultural change because it still throughout its history. It certainly came into contact with foreign ideas and influences. And we'll be discussing a major one here today because because one of the things you noticed about Is that it's majority. Religion is the Ethiopian Orthodox Taylor Hato church what's known as an Oriental Orthodox Christian church and it dates back many centuries. There's also a sizable Islamic population in Ethiopia followed in popularity by Protestants traditional faiths Catholicism and Judaism. Now of course there are other fascinating things about Ethiopia's well for instance. Ethiopian cuisine has certainly traveled well around the world. I think thing is widely believed to be the origin. Place of coffee is coffee and Okra is well. I was I chatted with Anne of our fellow. PODCAST here in the Atlanta offices saver and I said Hey. Have you guys done anything. I need the OPN cuisine because we could mention on the podcast and they said that had not yet though they both love the food but they have done an episode Okra and they've done an episode on coffee that get into those origins and say those are two of my favorite plant based foods. Are you an ochre fan or would you one of those people who thinks that slimy. Oh I love Okra and I love it because it is slimy especially in Gumbo. Does it acts as a thickening agent so I I want there to be Okra present in media dish buses great. It's great fried. It's great escape pickled Yeah I'm an Okra Fan for sure. Okay we're on the same page. I like all those ways to. I also really like Okra in Indian food. Yeah it goes really good with Indian spices who I had it in Indian food before but maybe not recently enough for it to really struck a chord. I'll have to seek it out. There is a restaurant here in town. That made a really amazing curried Okra and then then they went out of business. All right well. Let's talk in greater detail tale about Ethiopian Christianity. Then because since we're focusing in on Old Christian temples that were carved out of the ground in Ethiopia. We should in describe how Christianity came to East Africa. Sure So I was looking at a scientific paper that will make a brief reference to later in the episode and the authors of this paper Ethiopian scientists AGFA Wilson S Rot. And you did. I do They point out in the background. Section of the paper that the broader tradition of rock hewn churches in Ethiopia is historically associated with the coming of a group of figures known. Is the nine saints who were alleged to have journeyed from Egypt and Syria during the late fifth and early sixth centuries to preach the gospel of Christianity in Ethiopia Propia and more specifically to spread and promote the monastic lifestyle. So I was digging into this claim I wanted to learn more about the nine saints and this eventually led me down a path where I found a really awesome entry about Ethiopian Christianity in the monastic tradition. In a book called the encyclopedia the of Monasticism edited by this story and Will Johnston with this specific entry on Ethiopian Monastic Christianity written by the Ethiopian American philology Lalla Gist getachew highly. I was reading this as well. And it is quite Quite a fascinating entry. I just had no idea just how imported the monastic tradition was for just Ethiopian. Culture General. Yeah Yeah so highly writes that Due to the proximity of Ethiopia to the Middle East some Christianity entity probably began to spread their organically as soon as the religion was founded but highly also claims that Ethiopian Christianity is a form of the religion. That's it's kind of uniquely shaped by monks and monastic influences. So what exactly would that mean well. Monasticism is the tradition we associate with with monks and nuns. It's the strain of faith that calls for a radical lifestyle of religious devotion often including things like vows of poverty or vows of chastity or vows of silence or fasting General seclusion from secular life. As you know the priest or preacher within the religion might usually live among the society preaching the faith meanwhile the monk shakes in some way to live outside the society rejecting many of the comforts and pleasures of dorm life making their day to day habits and living conditions themselves kind of a radical demonstration of

Vienna Freud was coming into full swing with his ideas and in studies have dreams talk therapy and yes Freud worked with cocaine as a local anesthetic as well as a talk therapy which honestly might not have been half a fad of an idea because people do talk a lot when they're on Coke no personal experience just saying so over one hundred years ago neurological reflexes flexes emanating from the nose known as nasal reflex neurosis were considered to be the cause of many symptoms including symptoms related to the Genitalia Doctor Wilhelm Fleiss found Freud through his papers on cocaine. He was an auditor Lalla Gist. I can't say that word but he he was a doctor dealing with the ear nose throat head and neck but he also took an interest in human rhythms and sexual cycles fleiss thought the nasal passages I just had an effect on sleep and chest pains but then he started linking along with Freud the nasal passages with menstrual pain miscarriages and psychological disorders orders and thus nasal reflex neurosis was born Freud being a patient of Fleiss started sending his own patients to him as well unfortunately ending dean an almost deadly incident with Emma Stein Freud diagnosed with hysteria and compulsive masturbation masturbation was not considered proper oppor or even safer women of that time for it sent her to Dr Fleiss within a month of seeing Dr Fleiss. Emma was near the point of death. A second opinion doctor checked out and found God's left inside her nose she wanted to Freud's office with nervousness and a tendency to masturbate and left slices with half her face collapse to to surgery and infection. One of the best known forty and theories is his identification of the parts of consciousness. Freud thought that all babies. AP sorry initially dominated by unconscious instinctual and selfish urges for immediate gratification which he labeled the hid as babies his attempt and fail to get all of their whims met they develop a more realistic appreciation for what is possible which is called the ego over our time babies also learn about and come to internalize and represent their parents values and rules these rules the superego are the basis for the developing child's consciousness that struggles with the concepts of right and wrong and works with the ego to control the immediate gratification urges the IT Freud didn't discover the unconscious mind of course that stink tion goes to French psychiatrist Pierre Genie but it was Freud who took the concept to the next level full by breaking it down even further and by applying it to psychotherapy and Free Association where patients would openly talk about their feelings and experiences regardless of how irrelevant absurd or upsetting it sounded human genitalia was kind of a big deal with Freud in fact he believed that all peoples personalities personalities and how well they functioned in society were result of developing through five psycho sexual stages oral Anal Phallic Latency and genital in Fritz view each stage focused on sexual activity and the pleasure received from a particular area of body in the oral phase children are focused on the pleasure they receive from nursing and biting with their mouth in the anal phase this focus shifts to through the anus as they began toilet training and attempt to control their bowels. If parents taken approach that's too lenient. Freud suggests that anal explosive super-security could develop in which the individual has a messy wasteful or destructive personality if the parents are too strict or begin toilet the training too early. Freud believed that an anal retentive personality develops in which the individual is rigid orderly and obsessive as potty the training wasn't hard enough for parents adherence to Freud's belief also had to deal with worrying that they would make their children gay by potty training them incorrectly early in the Phallic stage the focus moves to genital stimulation and the sexual identification that comes with whether or not you have a penis during this stays. Ford thought that children turn their interest and love toward the parent of the opposite sex and begin to strongly resent the parent of the same sex. This oedipus complex is named for the Greek tragedy in which the protagonist fulfills a prophecy by unknowingly killing his father and marrying and having children in with his mother supposedly boys begin to view their father's arrival for their mother's affections. They want to possess their mother and eliminate their father. However the child also fears he will be punished by his father through these feelings of fear that Freud termed castration anxiety since girls can't can't feel this castration anxiety they instead feel permanent penis envy which will revisit shortly girls allegedly want to possess their fathers and replaced their mothers which is called Electra Complex Electro was another ancient Greek character who plotted with her brother to kill their mother but there's Paris was a revenge plot for the death of their father so the name is kind of a stretch in this reporters opinion eventually according to Freud the child begins to identify defy with the same sex parent as a means of vicariously possessing the other parent the phallic or edible stage was thought to be followed by a period creative latency during which sexual urges and interests were temporarily nonexistent finally children were thought to enter and remain in a genital stage which in which adult sexual interest and activities come to dominate there have been a number of observations and criticisms of Freud's psycho-sexual theory through the a years on a number of grounds including scientific and feminist critiques the theories focused almost entirely on male development. The theories are difficult to test scientifically concepts such as Beato are impossible to measure and therefore cannot be empirically tested. Freud said a thing that he he can't prove to be true in a way that makes it hard to prove that it's not true future. Predictions are vague business at best and should be left to fortune tellers. The length of time between the cause and effect is too great to assume there's a relationship between the two variables for its theories based on case studies. It's not empirical research on the recollections of his adult patients but not on any actual observation or study of children.
