COVID-19 Relief Package Includes Billions For Transportation Sector

"All right how often did you fly. Or maybe the trainer buster in the pandemic. Yeah the transportation sector has been hit hard but anyone who rides in trains planes or automobile should benefit from the one point nine trillion dollar cove relief package. Npr's david schaper reports. It was a year ago this week. The us what unlocked down highways and airports were suddenly almost deserted. People travelling overseas scrambled to get flights home at mass transit. Trains ran nearly empty in the virginia. Suburbs of washington. Dc forty six year old. Sandra vigil had been driving buses packed. with sixty. to seventy people are more. We ended up taking towards the end of march. He was like one two people per ride. If you had any people at all last march twenty ninth vigil says she about ninety five percent of her loudon county. Transit co workers were furloughed. Her's lasted four and a half months and unemployment wasn't enough to make ends meet. A lot of fail behind are not rental car payments. Because he was either eating or paint a car or paying the rent and thing they lakeville transit systems across the country so ridership plummet ninety percent or more in revenue fell with it yet. Mass transit is essential especially for many low wage workers. Again bus driver. Sandra vigil in order to keep the buses running and to keep us working. We needed this money. The relief bill includes thirty billion dollars for transit. It also includes one point seven billion dollars for amtrak enough to bring twelve hundred furloughed employees back to work and restore daily service on long distance routes and there's funding to help states continue fixing crumbling roads and bridges offsetting. They're lost gas tax revenue as for airlines. I have fantastic news year. That's american airline ceo. Doug parker in a video message to employees about the plan which includes another fourteen billion dollars payroll support. That's good news for the thirteen thousand american employees who were facing furloughs april. First so if you have one of those worn out notices we sit out in february. Tear it up. There aren't going to be any furloughs at american airlines in april and with vaccinations on the rise. Hopefully never again. Ceo parker says the last three weeks have been the airlines best. Since the pandemic hit with bookings and passenger volumes up that's happening at other airlines too so much so that after months of hemorrhaging tens of millions of dollars a day the ceo's of delta and united now expect to reduce their daily cash. Burn two zero this month or next while southwest is on track to break even by june. Of course that's relatively easy to do. When tax payers are essentially covering much of your payroll airlines have now received more than fifty billion dollars in federal payroll grants since the start of the pandemic. This was hugely important. And as a pilot for american airlines at spokesman for the pilot's union. The last thing i wanted to be is on our heels when everybody was ready to get back. Flying tiger says if pilots had been furloughed. They need weeks. If not months of training before being able to fly passengers again. You do not want to be staring at the recovery and turning around and seeing the flight deck empty. Because you weren't able to train. The pilots quickly. Enough joe sweet. Herman transportation professor at chicago's depaul university. Says this government aid is crucial is pretty clear that the airlines were such a desire straight federal assistance and a big way we would have lost an airliner to sweden and says the federal aid helps airlines amtrak transit agencies and highway departments continue critical operations while adapting to a post covid world a world that will likely lead to more operational changes in the near.

But they're schramsberg moms domain. Don there's Tatting genet. i think more wet some huge named public producers in napa. Another thing on the back. It says carbonated sparkling those. That's another why. Would you put carbonated because anything from a wine split. Their to the best champagne world can call carbonated but going to the dictionary. A carbonated wine is one. You have absolutely no case. Here is an air weird one. Not even weird is your typical lawsuit against the school district for anything that happens. And this is A suit against a school district lakeville area school district. And here's what happened. Have a bunch of kids and this is a long time ago but it finally they lose their lawsuit and i'll explain because it's up on appeals etc so twenty fifteen a bunch of kids Play something called nerf wars last student standing kind of thing and as part of the game one student to others kidnapped this kid in the school and that's in quotes in the parking lot after school that day in the school. Parking lot five minutes later and they're playing this game about three miles from the school One of the passengers one of the kids bumps the driver. Crashes the pickup. Everybody dies now. The lawsuit says the school knew or should have known being. The game was being played at school and it was dangerous. The school neglected its duty to intervene and protect students. Okay so here are some of the facts this important seven weeks. Before the crash the school's activities director said in an email to the principal and the deans neighbors were complaining about not wars being played in the community by the way that game quote in the community plate was not the game that was played in the parking lot that afternoon where the kids then got into the truck and they died in the crash so some students at the during the trial testified they believed a few teachers knew about the game because they were active on twitter and twitter was managing the game. Here's what the judge said. No evidence to support that..

"Social emotional support. This constitution has been discriminated against which mandates fair and equal access to education across the board and the students have been harmed by the school's failure to meet those required minimal minimum in structural needs and it's filed against everybody the state department of education State superintendent of instruction in here. Who is the plaintiff and this. She represents virtually everybody. She has three elementary school. Kids in oakland unified school district. One of the poor districts and said that her twins in the second grade received live instruction from a teacher twice when the schools close cincy schools closed mid march to the end of the school year. They weren't assigned packets or other materials to make up for lost time. The teacher totally dropped the ball. According to lawsuit they apparent said when she finally reached the teacher after repeated phone calls messages. The teacher said because some students weren't able to get online for remote learning. She had canceled classes for all students. So i guess the argument is no. We're not unfair to students of the lower socio sociology economic levels. I guess we're unfair to everybody. Don't argue discrimination when we're screwing everybody on the same level. I guess is the defense here and it's is going to work well. I think what's going to happen. Is that the court is gonna look at under the circumstances of the pandemic. Did the school make reasonable attempts to deal with the issues and the challenges and you. A plaintiff can't argue. Look you didn't do what should have been done for example. That's like suing hospitals and counties because the icu beds sai have simply all been used up. You should have known that all the beds would have been used up. therefore you didn't make accommodations to buy new ones and to train new people to deal with the pandemic. I mean that's basically the argument that's being made here to a lesser extent. And so the courts going to look at what the school actually did. What the district with the state actually did and if reasonable attempts were made to be fair to give access. I don't think the plane is going anywhere. I mean we're all suffering. All the kids are suffering it. It's just that simple and poor kids suffer more. It's that's just the way it is and you can't argue that kids who are treated the same in school and therefore are not treated the same with online learning because they don't have broadband at home because they don't have computers. Is it the duty of the school. The state to provide broadband anti provide computers. That is that reasonable. Maybe long term. It is should happen. The pandemic happened in march by april. We should have had broadband. You should have called my career. He should have paid for it. Made arrangements for the state to enter into a contract Tobias computers. Oh by the way. You should have done that in two weeks see. That's the problem all right. Let's go ahead and take some phone calls. Start with the aaron. Hello aaron welcome to handle on the law. Good morning bill. "Welcome back. This is the Ben Shapiro show. So good news as I mentioned a little bit earlier on the show. The Washington Post is printed in insanely stupid column from Talia Lavigne was apparently an insanely stupid person choose fired from different publication just last year for suggesting that a retired military. Officer was in fact, a Neo Nazi now. She has suggested that I have suggested that the Notre Dame cathedral burning was performed by Muslims in order to initiate, a war between Christianity and Islam. How she got to this conclusion I have no idea, but I suppose that when you stick your head far enough into your colon that starts coming out your own face. Again, you see all sorts of interesting perspectives in any case this lady tally Lavigne in the pages of the Washington Post wrote fast talking right pundit, Ben Shapiro called Notre for Dom monument western civilization NGO Christian heritage given the already raging rumors about potential Muslim involvement. These two vote the specter of a war between Islam and the west. That is already part of numerous far-right narratives. And then she suggested that I must be made to be quiet for saying that Notre Dame has something to do with western civilization entered AO Christian heritage. Okay. Then she came out and she thinks media matters for providing the information. How wonderful how wonderful there, so delightful media matters. So I tweeted that media matters Washington Post will be ashamed for just being press outlet propaganda outlet on behalf of media matters, which is a pathetic left wing hit organization dedicated to taking out right wing prominent figures, they have gone after everybody from Laura Ingram to Rush Limbaugh to Sean Hannity, Mark Levin to me, they go for everybody media matters. Because this is their this is their mandates. All they are there to do is destroy people. They disagree with by taking them out of context and trying to wreck their careers. I pointed this out so media matters. Did what media matters does they didn't f you and bro? You wrote in first of all stop culturally. Appropriating boroughs media matters. Second of all it seems like a great media watchdog journalistic organization to tweet back at me FU, and the Bhutto you. You wrote in on. What what what the lakeville folks they are. What's a light full delightful people? They are unbelievable. So although it is all too believable. And you're seeing various lefties come out of the woodwork to acknowledge that. Well, the piece was wrong. It's well merited. Well that I'm merit criticism. Even though the piece is wrong because hey, I'm Ben Shapiro. And they hate me. You know, I'm not enough to think that the world is thinking about me all the time because that's stupid. That's stupid. The media matters is and if I'm that far inside Talia Lavigne tiny brain, there's not even room for me in there. My goodness. Okay. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders. Continues to surge in the democratic in the democratic race Bernie has surgeon lead, according to Emerson polls. And this is making people pretty crazy in the Democratic Party. They are running a little bit scared of Bernie as well. They should be because Bernie has a solid thirty to thirty five percent twenty-five anywhere from twenty five thirty percents of the democratic polls. And if he's wins in Iowa, and then he wins in New Hampshire as any wins in South Carolina or competes in South Carolina. You can easily see him picking up the big states like California and New York, and they're no super delegates this time to put their thumb on the scale on behalf of some more mainstream democratic figure Bernie also have the Kahane's for what you deserve credit to go on Fox News for a town hall, and it wasn't all great for him. But there was no. There was no L possible for him. Bernie sanders. Appearing on Fox News is a big win for him. Simply because no matter what he does his side is going to cheer. He can get as dumb as he wants. And they will cheer him because he's on that evil bigoted terrible channel take. Taking it to the right wingers. So for example, here's Bernie Sanders making a fool of himself when he was asked about paying extra taxes by Martha McCallum, and Brad bear they both asked Bernie constantly talking about how Trump tax cuts are bad. You could pay taxes. If you feel like you're a millionaire and Bernie Sanders responds with I know you are. But what am I that's that's almost literally direct quote? Your taxes do show that you're a millionaire. You did make a million twenty sixteen twenty seventeen year. Right. The five sixty one and twenty eighteen but you're Marshall tax rate was twenty six percent because of President Trump's sack stuck. So why not say, you know, I'm leading this revolution. I'm not gonna take this. I am. Pay the taxes that by the way, Donald Trump up here and asking shape pays in taxes. Fifty two percent on the money that you made you can volunteer. You can send back to volunteer to we how the. You make more money. Doc. She's not running for president. Okay. This is really amazing. I love that. He responds.

"Trying to lakeville and comes around to Burnsville accounts back in downtown. Claire. Julia. Do you know this place in Missoula Montana called the Montana club ever heard of that? That sounds fair. Now, I know about a different club the club, which is in bozeman. They have a deal where if you eat there on your birthday, you get your age as a percent off discount so twenty nine. Nine percent off discount worked out really really well for Helen because she just turned one hundred nine. She didn't just get her meal for free as the hundred they also gave her nine percent of the cost of the meal back in cash. For crying out loud. The woman's one hundred nine years old thrower of bone. She's been going there for her birthday every year since she turned one hundred she knows a free meal when you can get it. Oh, that's you. Gotta take advantage of that. Did you guys know that a truck full of axe body spray exploded on the free over the weekend? I saw that picture, and I just thought of my teenage boys. Oh, my oh. Julia. You had to have that. It was. Ax was everything I suppose is the male equivalent of the Victoria secret body spray and the purple container that we used to dump ourselves in. Well, this happened over the weekend in Texas. No casualties, everyone's fine. But it was a semi carrying a shipment of axe body spray on interstate thirty five in Belton, Texas that caught fire and all the axe body spray loaded. Toby humanity. Can you imagine how bad that accident would have smelled though? No, I mean that is a Chem trail. No one was hurt. The driver got out. But I really don't know how Texas is coping with the short of shortage of axe body spray. Truly a humanitarian crisis is happening down in Texas right now. That is that is I've got something. I was shopping in the newly remodeled Taja in my neighborhood. Yeah. And there is this there. I had this story like the day before. And I we never use it in randoms. It's experts reveal why it's so hard to only buy one thing at target. And there's a scientific reason why go in there in the source completely different. So I I went down up and down every will because I wanted to get the new lay of the land. And it's so the displays are so pretty I think it's so smart it just I got lost in areas. I was so happy seeing new merchandise. Designed exactly that way designed perfectly for me. And now when I get to the checkout make hurt is so much more fold, and I I was just going for groceries, but I started in cards and then house where I mean, I just never even got what I want. So what they say is there's a scientific reason why stores to teach place things the way they do. And they have an idea about the path that shoppers take WalMart was once famous for doing things like putting bandaids next to fishing hooks and things like that something you don't naturally socially it with. But once you're there, it would make sense in this Kentucky based psychologists Dr. Kevin Chapman said another reason targeted in particular can make.

Puerto Rico bankruptcy judge upholds oversight board powers over government

"I'm Rachel Martin, good morning a federal judge has ruled that Puerto Rico does not have the final say when it. Comes to its own fiscal policy the final word belongs to a fiscal oversight board, that congress, created two years ago it's a ruling that will have far reaching consequences for, the island's financial future to. Talk about that. Let's bring it NPR's Adrian flurry toe from San, Juan Puerto Rico Adrian hey Rachel so this fiscal oversight board was created way before the hurricane when Puerto Rico was. Still suffering from all kinds of financial problems right yeah I mean remember it was a couple of years ago the government basically, said that it would not be able, to pay the more than seventy billion. Dollars that it owes to bondholders, into, that led congress to do two things that passed Allowing. The islands to effectively declared bankruptcy to restructure. That debt it also created this seven. Member board with. Huge power to make decisions. About the island's finances in order to to get this debt under control and turn the economy around listen to what the. Board's chairman Jose Korean told me in our colleague Michelle Martin back in June the. Government's function aside from taking care of the needy is to create the economic conditions whereby private enterprise. Succeeds and employees folks creates wealth that's that's the nature, of our, system, are, legal. Needs destruction reforms that will allow it to do so with the board sees one of its roles is being as forcing Puerto. Rican? Government. To implement, these sorts of reforms along with huge spending. Cuts in this you can imagine his has been big source of tension right so then their control was essentially a called into question because the governor of Puerto Rico and the legislature In Puerto Rico sued the oversight. Board, last month the governor and legislature don't believe that this federally, appointed board should be able to, force the, local government to implement these measures, they think they can recommend but not not require the government to. Do so until one example input Rico workers are entitled by law to a Christmas bonus the board wants this bonus eliminated and so in the budget that it drew up. For Puerto Rico did not include enough money for something the governor said, it did not have the. Right to do, it's just one example I mean the fundamental question here right is when it comes to fiscal policy to fiscal reform canvas. Board do that who has the final say the elected government to fourth three or the sport created. By congress and yesterday with, this federal judge ruled is that it's this appointing board that they have the power to overrule Puerto Rico's government when it comes to. To financial policy well so I can't imagine that government, in? Puerto Rico Governor there especially is very happy about this then no he was not a huge overseas but But he issued a statement saying that. It was proof that the Rico which is a u. s. territory is in fact more like a US colony he called it. An undignified relationship because you, know congress basically dictating policy he said without the islands consent on the other, hand the members of this oversight board some of. Whom are from Puerto Rico others. From the mainland US they welcomed the ruling and they said it, was time for the governor to begin. Implementing these cuts and austerity reforms to get Puerto Rico back. On on the right. Track so, what does it mean then I mean if you consider the fact that now the democratically elected government their. Their their power and control over Puerto Rico has been curtailed what does that mean for regular. Folks that's absolutely right what you just said it also means that for regular folks they can expect more cuts to services benefits even pensions some of these cuts have. Already, begun to public education the health benefits and we're talking about, an island where through where half of the, population lives in poverty in these, cuts Unconvicted, to slice pretty deep
