Science News Briefs from Around the Planet

"Hi. I'm scientific. American Assistant News. Editor Sarah Lou in Frazier and here's a short piece from July twenty twenty issue of the magazine in the section called advances dispatches from the frontiers of science, technology and medicine. The article is titled Quick Hits In it's a rundown of some non corona virus stories from around the globe. From, Turks and Caicos Islands analysis of Ano- lizards collected before and after hurricanes, Irma and Maria in twenty seventeen and eighteen months later revealed that the surviving lizards and their descendants had larger and therefore grippier Topaz. The team examined Lizard photographs from natural history collections and seventy years of hurricane data to confirm the trend. From Italy sediment samples drawn from the tree and see revealed hotspots with up to one point nine million micro plastic particles per square meter, the highest concentration ever recorded on the sea floor. Most of pollution comes from wastewater and sewage systems. Researchers say. From Antarctica, paleontologists found a fossilized forty million year old frog on Seymour. Near the tip of the peninsula, The FROG is related to modern ones living in temperate humid conditions in the Chilean Andes. From Iraq researchers probing the Turkish State Archives found the earliest known record of a meteorite causing a death. The object struck a hilltop in neighboring Iraq in eighteen, eighty, eight, killing one man and paralyzing another. From Japan results gathered from the KAMIOKA. Observatory which includes an underground detector tank filled with fifty five thousand tons of water, suggested intriguing discrepancy in how neutrinos, an anti neutrinos oscillate potentially violating symmetry between matter and antimatter. From Kenya scientists identified a malaria blocking microbe in mosquitoes on the shores of Lake Victoria. Every mosquito catalog with this apparently benign fungus was free of the disease, carrying parasite and experiments showed the fungus prevented its transmission. That was quick hits. Sell Or Stay? Australia's Fire Zone Experiment

"Australia is still recovering from bushfires destroyed. More than two thousand homes. Some of those homes may not be rebuilt. The government of one Australian state has historically offered to purchase empty. Lots where fire has destroyed homes. The goal is to help people moved to safer places but NPR's Rebecca Hersher reports that there was this crucial flaw in how that policy was rolled out. Donna Wilson late to cigarette and pollster truck out of the parking lot at the real estate firm. She manages in King Lake Victoria just bicycle idea from. Hey Ya damn houses. To houses went as in went up in flames on February seventh. Two thousand nine bushfire destroyed a huge chunk of this town. This whole straight pretty much weight. The flames moved so quickly that many people couldn't escape one hundred. Seventy three people died in a matter of hours most of them in and around king leak thousands of homes were destroyed three days later then. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd address the Australian parliament the seventh February. We become each national memory as a day of disaster of death and of morning. Black Saturday as it came to be called was Australia's most devastating modern bushfire event five times more deadly than the country's most recent fires and one of the questions that emerged afterward was whether all the houses that earned should be rebuilt. Maybe it was too dangerous. The solution was to try a set of policies. That would give people a choice. You can either build a new house. That was more fire resistant or sell your land to the government and move somewhere else. Wants land was sold to the government. Home could never be built on it again. It was an experiment. The assumption among policymakers was that the more traumatized a homeowner was by the fires. The more likely they would be to sell and relocate and Donna Wilson says to some extent that was true. It was a a godsend for little king. Lake is a small town. So Wilson knew a lot of the people who are coming into a real estate office after the fires and many of them were really struggling. Everything they owned was gone. Many of them had lost family or neighbors in the fire so selling their land to the government and preventing anyone from living there again was both simple and reassuring national. They couldn't deal with a all. They dislike that idea that no no build on that block. But as the so-called buyback scheme unfolded it became clear that it wasn't working for everyone. A key problem was the detained almost two years for the government to commit to it. And in the meantime people had already decided what to do even people who had nearly died in the fires last onto Kookaburra court. Then you will arrive at your destination on one hundred five degree day in February of this year. Npr producer Meredith. Rizzo and I drove the half hour from King Lake Down to flower gale. A town of about six hundred people surrounded by tree covered ridges. It's almost eleven years to the day since black Saturday. High joke the seventy year old Joe. Millburn takes us into his new living room. Which is right where his old living room used to be. In fact on black Saturday Joe was sitting right here reading when the power went out it was evening and I looked over the to the window between the Kurds and it was a red stripe and before sunset so when the front and the sky was read within an hour his entire neighborhood was on fire. He remembers trying to get to his neighbor's house for help. And I looked up and this is the only time I thought it was not die. The fight was about. It muscle he and his neighbors and their grandchildren piled into two cars and drove through the smoke and flames to an empty field. That had already burned. They watched as the fire devoured. The ridges. Joe's house was gone. His fire insurance policy provided enough to build a new house and he thought that was the only option available to him so less than a year after the fire he went for it outside the building by the time. Now it's going to do. The BUYBACK MISSED OUT AGAIN. Story my life by the time the government was ready to pay people like Joe for their land. He was already living in his new house. I wouldn't build this and in the decade. Since the forest has re grown the fire danger is high. Officials recognized that the delays in rolling out. The buyback offer made it difficult for many people to use it. Craig Lapsley was. Victoria's Fire Services Commissioner after the two thousand nine blazes leaks acution took forever and it was extremely frustrating. Make decisions so what did I do in the end? Most people who lost their homes on Black Saturday did not sell to the government and many people rebuilt houses in places with very high fire risk but Lapsley says he thinks that offering buybacks was a good idea especially when that option was coupled with more stringent building standards. Those are lessons that other parts of Australia and the US are looking to as they grapple with how to help people make safer decisions about where and how to live Rebecca Hersher NPR news.

"About learning this isn't about i'm gonna i'm gonna keep it short in lake victoria the second largest freshwater lake in the world holly superior go america all right in fact about the world and turn it into satis he's got a full wick read the saddest paragraph from the wikki that i found about this country is here we go barundi gained independence in nineteen sixty two and initially had a monarchy but a series of assassinations coups general climate of regional instability culminated stablishment of a republican one party state in nineteen sixty six gets worse bouts of ethnic cleansing and ultimately to civil wars and genocides during the nineteen seventies and again in the nineteen nineties left the country underdeveloped and its population as one of the world's poorest it continues but that might get to genocides to civil wars from nineteen sixty on think of all the crappy things that have happened since let's say the revolutionary war in america all that crowder and worse has happened in that country since nineteen the lifetimes of our parents insanity and then the other thing is they literally have no forests because all down to do housekeeping i mean but we we made good on a promise we said we're going to have a fact about barundi say a fact then those fast the lakewood and that's a fact i said a lot of facts i really liked it so here's the thing i had a good time great time we just took a journey oh wow together oh good about it and raise your hand and make a sound show of hands cast if you knew that that was even a country before we talk i certainly did.

"The art so i visited key sumo wants a couple of years ago it sits on lake victoria from the banks of the town it's very pretty but i was only they're very briefly so tell secondplace key samoa's houston is due to haul first of all lake victoria is definitely one of the main focal points in his city it certainly very hot i want they temperatures are in the nineties when i was there on and in fact the the he was not working during the premier so people were were sweating on that scott yeah it was but you couldn't tell i mean people totally captured air their glamour despite the heat which should have actually admirable because i failed in that regard on a a good ask you this tomorrow i mean you know when these comments made recently by donald trump about african countries and a hollywood premiere inky sumo at an i'm acts at at a big mall on the seams and intentional piece of evidence that many parts of africa are misunderstood by outsiders i mean obviously i come at this with my own americanized but was anybody commenting on that last night there wa i spoke away a very opinionated college skin in about this and i i would almost little strategy specifically reference donald trump's comments and the tea stipulated that in the context of what the movie means not just where kissing residents not just by kenyans but for people that africandesigned all over the world i think that people in kisumu end in kenya in geno all are deeply aware of the way that their country in the waited their culture is often portrayed the mainstream in how one dimensional in narrow it can be um in so there there were so many layers of celebration of the storm and i think one of them was that it it challenge people to to confront their own biased is in their own onedimensional perceptions of why africa is in who black people are in what they're capable labs um i heard a lot of people actually referenced thing as peace in.
