One of my favorite Michigan girlfriend singer songwriters what a many him is performing in town weekend of course I'm talking about traverse city's own may Irwin he plays delivery on Saturday night what makes this particular concert even more special is that it is a release concert for her brand new album titled Second Site it's an album filled with songs reflection about the Times that we we're living in and very pertinent to what's been going on in our country right now Earlier this week I had a chance to speak with may about the ooh out for a new record is taking a long time to finish took a schedule for a chance to it's been a long time coming and I'm really really take to finish it and it's the fans are all written host selection of the current president and so a lot of it is how it means to be living in this country right now and talking about the origins of our flagon and this country in general and and the hope is to try to help reconnect people look what it means to them to be be living here and it means to continue to create positive change in our communities and making adapting are sort of American dreaming and creating a new one that is more inclusive of everyone who calls this place home and while also asking you know those the powers that be to be more responsible and respectful of all the people that live here as well so that's what the album is about and the shows are sort of a piece kind of taking people on a journey through reflecting on those ideas we'll tell me a little bit mad about the title second site tell me a little bit about the idea behind in and like maybe a shift yeah that the title game instead of the you know the talk coming from the title but it's really when it boils down to feel like right now reconnecting to intuitive fellas really important part of healing and so the second site is sort of the part of us that knows what to do beyond any sort of like external knowing so sort of being quiet enough to reflect inside ourselves and and have our intuition guiding US instead of being led by happening around us especially right now there's so much to be distracted by and also there's a lot of things on the political world that are really taking out of energy and distracting us from what we know and what we want to see so check and say is sort of your what the intuitive higher self and and reconnecting to that and with these shoes I know that you can these this this little of released tour tell me year what are the songs that have just kind of uh they resonated for you and starting to resonate with audiences as well when you're you're playing these live in pretty amazing it was a little bit scary to Matt Really Know How people would receive the material having it being kind of your content matters unusual my my voice in a way is an activist and so I wasn't sure but people have really been receiving the message really well and connecting in the songs that we've done like there's a few that are extremely just relevant to a happening right now one is whole again one and Sach my home and then on his called how can I return and those three are pretty heavy pieces and they're kind of the flag suite of the album and so they're reflecting on different parts of the flag and and what it means to live here now and they've just been received so well and and it's been really powerful to be supported by the band who's willing to go very deep and Ashley with me into this message to deliver right with a lot of thought and heart and then to have received has just then a really really beautiful sharing and given given me a lot of faith in our work at the community people really we are ready for a different way forward you know the to carry ons of tooth we had and fitted to the five it took pain that Novacaine office live burn into history legacy.

I'm Jeremy Buffalo and I'm Paul Mao what's up. Gb Man how you doing. I'm awesome the first week of fall yeah the music finally meet ears by things following. Take temperatures beautiful leaves me asleep. Yeah exactly that's right. Sorry all things things before. We have interesting and you know what else happens. In the fall is the mental main stage season kicks off the walls on and there's a great falls fire nine balls of fire yeah that doesn't quite where we have another great great mental show coming up insulin suckle history in December fourth nineteen fifty six at the Son Record Studios in Memphis Tennessee Carl Perkins came in to record some songs with his band and the labels latest acquisition position. Some new kid named Jerry Lewis. You're sitting in on piano. It just so happened since it. Was You know sun records. Johnny cash happened to come into the studio that morning. You're listening and then sometime in the early afternoon twenty one year old Elvis Presley standby for a casual visit an impromptu museum session followed who wish for with off or members Jerry Lee Carl Perkins Johnny cash and Elvis Presley. This jam session was record quartered and is the basis for the hit musical million dollar. Quartet kicks off its tenth anniversary national tour on Tuesday. Take a tuber I at the mental center at Lake Michigan College. This will be the first show of the tour so we're excited about that. I recently had a chance is to catch up with trevor. Dorner portrays Jerry Lee Lewis in the show to talk about that seminal moment in rock history and his portrayal of the great balls of fire singer. Yeah so the show itself all revolves around this one night in Memphis Tennessee son record where I they had Jerry Lee Lewis Johnny Cash Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley all happened to be there together and they had kind of an impromptu jam session so musicals was kind of a dramatization of that night which like we play some of the songs that they played that night because there is like an actual recording straight through like everything that happened I think and yeah so that's like kind of the whole show is that I've been doing Jerry Lee for a while now I actually I was on and the national tour before this. I'm about two years ago. and I was the under study for that tour and then since then I've done a couple of other productions regionally and now the tour has put me back to daily this time around for the Serie Super Cool. I'm super excited. This'll be you know I'm in and like I'm close to two hundred shows doing million dollar quartet so far one hundred that'd be under study now getting close to a hundred actually playing Jerry Lee the cool kind of growth over the last two years of doing this show and Kinda. Let me here to opening the tenth bursary tour.

"Into this week's episode of Breaking Character Victor quoted from the guest later in our sister. I'm Jeremy Paul now. We've got percents. Go in the house do not that that live on air on tape all right so Paul so we are. We have settled down a serious question Mary serious if you had to choose mm-hmm which is better. Beatles stones needles all right all right. Well okay. I'm I'm on the phone ring me man. I'm sorry I backup Laura but I think more rolling standard okay yeah but no matter what side you fall on if you love the Beatles or the rolling stands you will wanNA catch birtles versus stones musical showdown which kicks off the twenty nine hundred twenty twenty main stage season Saturday at Lake Michigan Colleges Benton Harbor Harbor campus is onstage throwdown pit rolling Stone's tribute being satisfaction the international rolling stone show against rival Brett Boys Abbey road food in an all out musical battle playing the best songs from both bands immense catalogue earlier this week I spoke with satisfaction lead singer Chris Legrand Legrand about the show becoming Mick Jagger in more here's what he had to say Functional Fraction Rolling Stone Show after nineteen years where we're somewhere between thirty five hundred four thousand shows and it is count I started this show myself spend years and years we've we've got a few side projects that we'd be the creator involved with one for a while was symphonic showed it was still on Cajun symphony for the devil substantially version of our show and then. I don't know about seven years ago. I I started to put together a show myself not this particular show but my own show and it was a little different type of concept and I was working on it and when I started that project my current partner in any negative in California actually manages after the Beetle Shows Barn this production he had started this show this feels stones. I mean it's a showdown and he can still trouble getting off grounded in working with another rolling stone show at the time and he call me a few years back I'd say probably five years ago and came out. Your struggles great not really taken taken off like a like. He's not he's not going to happen with with some things that are here. He was interested in joining forces. There are certain yes. I'm not very long because I believe in the concept of a Beatles in a row excel show together. I knew handy from working with this booking agent on the projects for many years and so we we put our heads together and you know got this project operating oriented on the national scene up to that point and it just kind in west coast fan so when I came on we bought this thing all over the country and so from the past three years now we've had this really go around. USA and just devastating tremendous success with it so that's kind of a condensed version of history and and tell me you know I'm curious for your perspective. Tell me what is about the show that you just caught on. What makes it work well. you know arguably you got a big rock and roll bands of all time the Beatles stones and depending on who you're talking to you one. It's a one one is never changed. Show it just seemed like a genius idea to get on a bill and they'll celebrate both fans and that's what they showed does go back and then highlight all the different eras in the band's most popular errors in the bands and it's our show so it's it's tonight full of history. It's an I it's you got vans going back and forth with a different era so you'd give retrospective their catalog side by side and and it even other a contrast contracting styles since world together handsome insert makes for a great night of the fans and you know we just we had nothing but accolades great accolades this show and you know it's very retirement and comedy and the show was punched out we have finally Johnny we pick each other better jokes and those back and forth and you so in the end. It's just a win win for the audience 'cause they give to see both of these groups together which of course never happened in history performing in so it's it's a great concert. Gotcha now. I don't you know you portrayed mix in and your band. Tell me a little bit about about Stephanie to that because I think as most people now you know not only from a local standpoint but but mic is in you know has his own personality.

"Local talent right here in southwest, Michigan, this show that not only gives you behind the scenes. Look in the south west Michigan's are sitting team, it seen invites you into the conversations. Welcome to breaking character. Breaking characters brought to you by Lake Michigan college to go, slight theater, pres- lart center heiress gallery arts and culture centre, the twin city players and the Mason jar cafe this. This. Another upset. Breaking character recorded from the ghost light in the Benton harbor, our sister, I'm Jeremy bungling long last, I'm episode one. Oh, four point seventy six yes. Really had a few technical difficulties. We're often running now. Not at all. All right. Well you before we jump into this week said, how do you feel about your opening weekend of? We opened. We came. We saw kick some. But yeah, you hit some sell shows that ratio sold out the toilets worked. It was a good time. Amazing. Yeah, yeah. No, I can't think the area the region southeast Michigan over six hundred people came through an H shows. I mean for a brand new facility in a place. No, he'd ever. That's my, my wife's favorite comment was like I've never been here before. No one. Right. Sweet people so but fantastic. And I think fifty percent or so or senior citizens. So a lot of folks that aren't used to come in downtown Ben harbor after dark and things like that. So I wanted just applauded everybody's efforts and the, the obviously want it. So we're going to keep going with that. We have three more shows here and big party this weekend this weekend. So, yeah. The ghost lay may have just wrapped their production of bridges of Madison County that the person responsible for the musical itself. Tony award winning composer, Jason Robert Brown will be right here in this very building on Saturday, June twenty-ninth ver- very special event, which of course, includes a performance by Jason Paul. You're going to be singing a little bit too, as well as our special guest else. Mitre Alison, Snyder welcome home, Elson show. Tell us a little bit about this event, Paul. I know you're utes fan of JR JR. But tell me how you first connected. Because I know he came here before. Yeah. About five years ago, I asked him just Email them out of the blue centers. Big fan. I'd seen him actually do a masterclass concert type thing and attend a performance at Notre Dame and I kind of piggyback on that. And I'm like, yeah, I saw that horrible production down there. I'd like to invite she's really good production of raid. And so when we were doing parade at SEI still at southwest Michigan college, he came and did a concert in a masterclass for us, the when we were opening prayed. And really lovely guy worked his butt off from twenty four hours, but he was in the process at that time, not so randomly of recording the cast album for the bridges Madison County, which is amazing. And like I'd never even heard of before. So five years later here. I am actually producing that show and he's coming back. So very, very excited full circle, and he invited our cast to come to Lincoln center year later, and he did a full. Blown one night, only chance of a lifetime Broadway performance in Avery Fisher hall, which is now Giffen hall in Lincoln center, and so nine or ten of our students performed with him with two hundred fifty other singers, and Jeremy Jordan, Laura banana in isn't Joshua, Henry incredible star studded cast and it was an incredible. And so now I've invited him back here to help me open this theater. So you must thought something of your production invited your cast to actually I think they reached out to all the theatres that had just done it. So these kids, wouldn't already know the music. Yeah. Rehearsed for like two days. So those kids come in knowing the stuff, but he actually didn't get a chance to see my performance because the jump back on a plane and go back to the studio with Kelley O'Hara, so really great guy. And we reach out to mcginnis trying to open this theater is this something you'd be willing to do, and he carved out some time and he's going to be here with this weekend. He just finished an amazing concert with Stephen Sondheim Monday night. And so these slump. With us. Also. Tell us a little bit about the show self. So. You know you have a couple of different events happening here. Obviously, this is a fundraiser events tells us about a little bit about how the night is trying to have a red carpet premiere party. So as you know, make a big splash and invite our donors and other folks that want wanna come out, it's one hundred fifty dollars a ticket, which seems like a lot of I but what do you think about going to Chicago and having to pay park gang and get a hotel overnight and pay for food? This includes a heavier d'oeuvres open bar and bar, open bar. It's all Jeremy needed to hear and so, yeah. So I think the ticket prices, you know, maybe too costly for some folks, but, you know, you're getting a Broadway. Tony award winning Broadway, composer on a Stein. We piano, right in your own backyard and intimate space where you're going to be able to rebels with him. Right. Right. Exactly. So that so in addition to that, if you wanna come early the hour before there's another seventy five dollar pre party, meet-and-greet rub. Elbows meet him meet-and-greet type situation for caucus, but again, it's all for good causes. We're fine. One three nine profit. All these things are write offs on your taxes. Anything you wanna do to come be a part of this very, very special night. Please show up and it isn't addition to Jason, obviously doing whole bunch of songs. Even vetted some special guest in Allison, obviously, you're one of them. Tell us a little bit about what you're. Are you doing do it? We share our I'm so excited. We're going to be singing all the way to time from parade on icing few years ago at a cabaret and so excited to bring it back this time with the man who wrote it also in house Intel us for for your fans back home for a little people's. So tell us. Toes. What you've it up to your New York, these days, right? Yes. I moved to New York last year in two thousand eighteen I have been hitting the streets going to every possible, audition and class that I can't have taken lots of class on lots of auditions and. Yeah. Hitting the grinds and just keep my head down staying focused and trying to work hard. Last time you're here, you had done a bunch of cruise ship. Circuits. Yeah. Money, though, hang. No. Are you allowed to announce your new new project? Just received word that I will be torn the country with xanadu the musical. Awesome. And there are to drag queens, ripples, drag craze, on the tour with me, I'm so huge struck Weena fan tour with me excited. No. Roller coming into city near you. Paul Tulsa who else you've wrangled for special guests? Fortunately, we are bringing back our two leads that saying that breaks off the bridges of Madison County last weekend. Elizabeth shekel rose. They went home and coming back this weekend. So she sang franchesca and then branch fields. You're saying Robert, they're both coming back to sing. And then all of our interns, are opening the whole show with Jason Brown's new world. Beautiful cortott Mike Brooks, Creena cancer, Zachary Myers, and Fafa shaver and then Allison myself on to do it. And then Leo Carmody is also gonna sing old red hills of home also from prayed. Nice says the rest of the council be Jason Jason still funny, and, you know, so engaging singing his own music, and just yuck. Yuck ended up at the crowd is just wonderful, wonderful performer as well as a composer. He in these type of shows he tossed stories and you know is very engaging. Yeah. Very knowledgeable. I me kind of gives you a history of his music, and why he wrote things and what the song's about he plays on the he just plays the comedian the same time they just honestly fantastic performer. Well tells, you know, for people may be coming to this for the first time and, or maybe just heard Jason's name because of, you know, bridges managed county here, and we mentioned parade winter, some of the other shows that the people might might recognize the Jason has been involved. So the last five years was a two person musical that kind of knocked it out of the park, right out of the gate when he was in his early twenties. Turned into a movie with Anna Kendrick and germy Jordan a couple of years ago. Parade was nineteen ninety nine he was really young. When you wrote that and songs for new world, he wrote the musical thirteen he wrote a honeymoon in Vegas and bridges of Madison County and few other things urban cowboy collections of songs amazing new song. I think you wrote it after Orleans. Window about gun control all the who's gonna sing a song about your gun, so it's pretty heavy. He's pretty out there, liberal and talks pretty intently about those things, but mostly, I think he's going to be a musical theater things here that night, but he may do some things off his new album, which is called powder, react, and recover or something like that. Yeah. Yeah. What else? What else do we know about about the this night? It's going to be a blast in. It's really our first chance to make a splash on the scene with this kind of gala like me. You know, there are lots of fundraisers, lots of donor gals that people go for good cause, but, you know, we want people to have fun dressing up and having couples night out, and it's, it's tie optional or something like that. It's something like where you, you can wear your time, but you can wear and funky artsy theater ways you can put a bow tie on your hell though, you can wear it on your ankle. So it's supposed to be casually fun. You know, at the same time like bordering, I'm wearing a tuxedo and some people wearing gowns and things like that Rambus style headband headman with the red white and blue the Maga headband on. Hopefully not. But yeah, so it's meant to be fun and artistic and we have air conditioning were inside. So it's all good regardless of rain or heat. We're gonna be fine. One way or the other, and yeah, there's lots of tickets left were excited about it. I wanna thank some of our sponsors the Shaolin fundation personal gift from Bob BOS as help us get there. And it's just been a fantastic few weeks. We had circus team the past couple of weeks. Here are opening Mattis county will be opening no exit July eleventh. So this is just all having the same time. It's a lot lot of plates spinning or in rehearsals already for west side story, not clyborn park, and now you're in town and boom, it's what I wanted is everything. I wanted. It's just a lot of things happening, all at once, and I couldn't do without the support of our audiences as well as all the other theater makers helping people like Alison come into town and sharing her skills. So thank you else. So once again, Tony award winning composers around will be in concert, right here that goes, slight one one St. and the Ben arts sister, starting at seven pm. The, the main event.

Yeah, I sure so as promise, we welcome back our machine college colleagues, Mike nadeau ski executive director in the mental center in grace Kellner director of the main stage and nounce twenty nineteen twenty twenty mental center Macy's in lineup. Welcome back, thanks. We were just here doing this year already what, what? Right. We actually record for shows at once. That's right. If only we could plan that far in. Right. Make life so much easier. One day, remember? Good. Now, your fishery now thing this to members about the same time as this podcast drops Wednesday evening. So we appreciate getting a sneak peak. Let's dive right in who's opening the season for you this year. Tell me tell me about kicking this stuff off in September. Yeah, we open with Beatles versus stones fall. If you fall on the Beatles side or the stones. Yeah. A little bit about actually. Yeah. Good fight. Hey guys. You guys here. So it's to world renown tribute artists who are going to do the Beatles do the stones. And then they come all together at the end and perform together and said, all out bash. Yeah. And that's all that September September twenty first couple of songs might recognize. I heard on the radio. Every song ever played. That's well that's a great way to kick things off. So, so let's just run through the lineup. We didn't have nets next up. Then we have our big Broadway show, million dollar core tat and this is based on a true story, Jerry Lee Lewis Carl Perkins Elvis Presley, Johnny cash all got together in a Nashville studio, and one magical weekend or evening or something and jammed. And this is basically based on that experience. So it's toured all over the country. It's Tony award winning. It's going to be, again, a lot of highly recognizable music. That's Tuesday, October, first million dollar or tat off the tenth anniversary tour of that show at the mental center. Awesome. Awesome. The first one I I. Opening night for the tour. Yeah. Yeah. Really excited to be in that position up next. We have our first discovery series show, and it is Mike, super magic, and allusion. He definitely lives up to his name. He was a finalist on America's got talent. And he won NBC's phenomenon. He was on Penn and teller sfu us, so lots of credentials, there lots of, of awards. He's won. And he's, he's a really spectacular magician discovery series for second with that means. Yeah. The discovery series is usually four or show, four so shows that are approved for all audiences, not necessarily for kids, but it's just shows that would be great for kids, but okay are often. Formation times. Yeah. Yeah. Booking. Maybe like your if all of the above my wife, and I, we have a young son is twelve so he can't see everything. But there he definitely loves at school. I'm into the Mendel and sell those different subscription package. Like discovery, if you want all the discovery doesn't, you, you can do that are subscription packages are just if you buy at least three shows your subscribers so you can make up your three shows of three discovery serious shows, you can mix and match two for the kids, one for the adult parents out,

"Franken. Not a recording on now that good. He's good. This story of Frankie Valli and the four seasons makes one night only tour stop at seven pm. Thursday may sixteenth at the mental center at Lake Michigan college in the final performance of the mental center main stage twenty eighteen twenty nineteen season. I recently caught up what Jonathan cable who portrays Nick Massi in the production. It to talk about the ship about show will just all of your favorite hits. How about Guardiola in seasons? You get kind of behind the scenes look at their actual live band got together. And some of the Negrete details. How it's you know, so business in this life is always more. It's backed up to me, you know, there there were some joins the mob. And and, you know, they're going up in New Jersey, and you know, some some debts that have paid, and you you get a sense of me. So he's like working class kind of guy. Came up maybe along by the cracks got out, but still had no one in old. And and you know, the fun. Fun dealing. The. Upon them. But actually because. For the die. But each for the unions gets the own sort of sexual narrowed. You all of their perspectives and their story. I'm sure and good for people in this. Tell me your platelet, right? Told me, Nick. Yes. Think mass. Bass player anything base in the group. And he did some of the arranging vocal arranging for the group all the on he'll Hughes exit of I leave so any ritual of Siemens eating and their names of all Catholics and ended up. The best. He can end up to like Lingle. Years. Got forgotten Holzer wasn't given. And he actually on the end of which is their long ago and. And. Your is kind of. The quiet. The kind of guy, and it's it's fun to get the play them because. You know, the other guys are stupid from it can come. And from the show, I kinda get the fly under the window. And and. In the second act where I'm at express. Been forgotten about. It's art. In host good about stepping into like this. Because I mean, obviously, you're musical Peter veteran, but Dino doing something like this is different than you know, fictional story. Like say, what that story on which I know you multi done her or, you know, Hello, Dolly, tell me what it's like for you to step in the shoes of real person, and and their responsibility there of getting it, right or your tummy to me your perch to that. Certainly a response to early. I don't know. I feel holding anybody like I I think I would feel as strongly about them to get right? If I was doing that story will it's almost it's no piece, but it's it's the same and different. I mean, what what I bring to it from my love the within the census, the kind of fame the facts events that we have to draw on kinda give me a clear rubric follow as opposed to kind of coming up with things on my own fictional. Hang on. Komo artistic listens with with story was driven servicing said. And we kind of you know, you have to organize. Exactly those. Yeah. That no for sure. It. A story, but I wasn't strenuous with his thirteen years. But I'm sure it's been rightly successful of. And now we just had so much to. Sure. Tell me about about this touring. Because obviously when you're you're taking a four one Broadway show like this in in, you know, after break down every night, two different. So tell me how you guys are are, you know, able to do that in in the intake, the ready to reach people, you know, gutsy me not be able to get to guide. Our some of the bigger cities where we're Cheryl is usually put on what's pool. Ball is really saying from beans cities and towns that don't get shows like this very often. And it's like we told you found Jairo and actions. Area. You know, these like in Weston chance of people, and you know, getting to see. So like is mill. I didn't. That's all it's worth out dogs and thrown new word. You know, inspire a generation of new actors or musicians or for all technicians. You know, getting into help in some very like you'll stand there and always been. Goes and. Eaton's rain prisoners knowledge. Smaller towns built that are working on bag lighting themselves in having a show from then is huge huge economic in. Towns and for the restaurants. So if you're on that so very as and. Not seen. "Has been Shelby. X rays. Jeremy lamb, Paul. We both have a passion for the vigilant forming art share that slightly different ways, I'm recovering print journalists. Specializing in everything music fists, and I'm an operatic. Tenor eater director producer came home to help nurture the next generation of local talent right here in southwest. Michigan this show that not only gives you behind the scenes look in the south west Michigan's are sitting team had seen but invites you into the conversations. Welcome to breaking care. Breaking care brought you by Lake Michigan college to go slight theater as large center heiress, gallery, arts and culture centre, the twin city players and the Mason jar cafe this. This. Metsu Ninety-six of breaking character recorded from the federal building. And the Benton harbor are strict, I'm Jeremy Bonfiglio, and I'm Paul now. I feel ninety six years old today. I know I know whether it's the weather percent is the weather is that I'm opening theater. They said open theatre you'll have fun. It'll be Z, right? No, not at all. These we've got guests. We do nonprofit, right? And I told you to have fun. That's all I shout. Joining us in the studio this morning, our as our longtime friend, our says Seaver scally arts and culture center in artists Chiena Shearer who has a new exhibition opening Friday and in his gallery. Thank you. Ladies. Thanks for having us. Thank you for having us horse. Well, shannon. Let's let's start with you. Tell us a little bit about this exhibition and what we can expect to see on Friday. Thank you. Sure. Yeah. I'll have eight painting oil Hanes on just paper, and I'll have seven pulp paintings which are handmade sheets of paper with pigmented pulp painted under donning. Yeah. And the painting stemmed from project. I was doing on my own just to get back in the studio every day. So I did a painting a day everyday for eleven weeks in those paintings are result from that project, and the paper paintings the paintings are from wanting to expand some of that imagery into a different medium to tell me a little bit about subject matter. What are some of the things that you're going to gravitate toward? Yeah. What I what I've been really interested in lately sort of domestic vignettes so taking domestic settings and objects zooming in on those and making these really beautiful quiet vignettes thinking a lot about color shape pattern things like that really formal interests. But using a domestic sort of backdrop to those minutes. Nice nice. And then we'll tell me a little bit about your process to tell me how you work you have you have a studio. I've already. Watercolors their their oil unjust, sewed papers, the pulp painted caper. So yeah, I have a studio in my home. It's an old farmhouse. So I have a beautiful studio there, and I'm in Pullman, Michigan. So kind of Leah. Yeah. That's we're out in the middle of nowhere dirt road. So we're six three. Yeah. Cool. So I have a studio there, and these these paintings were made in silence just me in the studio really focused on the making. And of course, the paper paintings had to be done in a paper studio shadow to Andrew Peterson it hooked pottery paper do those in her studio, and she was a great source for me getting those pieces done so huge things to her. So for the most part, the the work was all made in silence is focused using imagery that I take myself and making the paintings from that. So Anna, tell us about how you discovered Shannon's work, and why it seem like a good fit for. Well. I'm a Channa at Oxford last summer. We just became fast friends, and I started she brought her work in one day. I asked her to and it's stunning. I can't even tell you. How thinking her work speaks to me a lot. It's going to it's already. It's isn't even halfway installed. And it's it's really amazing in the gallery. It's very thoughtful. You know, it's the colors the it's just so beautiful. Thank you. So. Yeah. And then well, she ended toast a little bit more about yourself. Now in a Mitch and oxygen that you work for a at for a number of years, right? Yeah. I worked there for fifteen years in various capacities ten of those years as campus director, and then just left in in November to pursue my own thing, my partner Mike in. I started a farm where we have farm products and produce sourced or selling it. Farmers markets now and local shops. We have hot sauce, we have pasta chocolate bars, and then twenty twenty eight varieties of garlic that were. Growing and lots of other produce. Right. Hinterland right. That's right. True land farming kitchen. Yeah. That's great. And then in Tulsa little bit about, you know, you mentioned that that Chin's work speaks to you. What what do you think it is about her work that kind of stands out? Well, I mean, it's very peaceful. So I mean, we're doing some fun projects. I can't quite say yet because they're still being lined up that always jinx jingle that. But we are doing some really fun things around this exhibit. It is. It's just peaceful, and lovely and thoughtful and your color choices, and you can just, you know, abstract art, you know, it's, you know, she's numbered them. So she's not giving any stories away. She's letting it's subjective letting it speak to you indigene, and it's it's very captivating. So I'm just trying to find the right language. I don't know as as a person in the art world for thirty years. I'm just really fascinated by harangue good word. It is. It's very tranquil. It's all about you describe those sweet soft describe this. She didn't. Silence. Yeah. It was important to me to have sort of an intense focus with those pieces because to me they were so much there so formal, but for me, there's so much more about the internal process of painting making it's just a really engaging process. Very meditative. I think. Thank you yourself. Breathe you concert under breathing. Yeah. Really really cool because you're gonna be there. Thank you. We want to talk for a second about the I am the greatest beach bash before we let you go. Come back. Leaker too. But you want to tell tell us today just getting a little short actually shout out Scalise. Six annual. I am the greatest speech bash June first six to nine at north pier brewing for the second year. We were having hula dancing hula lessons. We are having fire dancing live music with, you know, with beach style, music beach beach bites served sweets surf suites, meaning like surfboard cookies, really funding. It is short this much shy of last year. Oh, yeah. We have a good time. And a great live action. We have Bryan Maynard I'm honored to say that we have Bryan main forte coffee. Can we can we do show? Forte coffee. The best. Side. And we have tickets are on sale. Tickets are on sale, you can go to our Facebook page, our website of it's through event bri- you could pop in the gallery, we'd love to see you. And we have all of our committee members out there like we're almost going to war over in a Joe, I'm joking right? Trying to like, no buy tickets. No, right. Art update to learn more scholarships are also valuable for families with financial need register with complete payment either online by phone at nine three zero two seven one or drop off at the crash at seven seven lake boulevard in Saint Joe now, one of the things we love to do on this podcast is to make a big announce. Next coaster here to do just that Mike nadeau ski executive director of the Mendel center at Lake Michigan college and grace Kellner director of the main stage have joined us in the studio. Ten now's the twenty nineteen twenty twenty lineup of the economic club of south western Michigan speaker series, which of course, is hosted by the Mendel center at Lake Michigan college. Yeah, you're welcome. So before we get to the big reveal Mike, tell us a little bit about how this all comes together because I know. You and your staff have really taken on a bigger role and this over the past few years, and there's a few changes. I know how you're presenting this year. So let's let's talk about those first. Yeah. First of all the economic club. It has been around. This is this'll be our seventy six season. So it's a phenomenal legacy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And so it's it's a tremendous responsibility and honor to work collaboratively to come up with these speakers. And that's been a big push. This year is to really ask our members. They've always asked their members. But you know, you know, who they want to see, but we're also asking the community community leaders sponsors contributors, and now the college to since the college owns the series, right? Who are the speakers that we need to bring in and and then looking for improvements in how the actual presentation experience is out. Can we make improvements in the biggest change it? We've made as we've moved the primary venue from grand Upton hall to the main stage, we're now offering reserved seating. So one of the things we know is in appealing to all the different demographics. Is that particularly younger people like to show up and go right into the heart of the event. They don't want to sit and have a four hour experience. Right. They're looking for an hour or an hour and a half experience. And and then that's not just an age base thing. That's there's other people that are, you know, mid career or mid life children, and they be their time away. So people that want the. Social experience they want the networking dinner. Still going to be offered. We have a presentation or entertainment that'll be offered in grand up in hall. So then it's it's basically a pre speech event that stands nicely on its own. But as a nice networking and socializing opportunity, and then more people right can attendees began more stage. Well, more people can right. It's a bigger room and more people can be in the room when the actual presentation takes place in is it avail Mendel center main stage of bigger venue than how many people can fit in grand up. Yeah. Especially with the dinner configuration. I mean they used to squeeze. I can't even believe it. But they used to squeeze fourteen hundred people into the mood. Yeah. And I was there for some of those back in early nineties, and it was I don't hold me to this. But probably possibly over fire code. Yes. Yes. We just did. Yeah. Now, it's like six six hundred as a comfortable space. You know, if you're gonna use that whole room right under for six hundred. All right. So let's get to the line. Give us a rundown. Well, I'll let grace starting will alternate here. They're seven seven speakers, an amazing bump up to five or or. Yeah. This year. Plus, the White House speaker this year, it'll be six plus the white p Dan cool. So the first speaker is Nicole Malik hausky who was the first woman Thunderbird pilot. She's also a combat veteran and fighter squadron commander. And now, she's a White House fellow and adviser, so she'll be here on October sixteenth to talk about her experiences leading the way with the the Thunderbirds and military history and the tick borne illness that took her out of commission and her her long recovery back from that. And incidentally, the title of presentation is harnessing headwinds of change. So that's a nice fitting, see. Yeah. Yeah. And then next up we have an curry. Emmy award winning journalist executive producer and reporter for the PBS series. We'll meet again she courses on the today show for years. She'll be your Saturday November second at seven thirty and her speeches and evening with Ann curry being a tour to force of determination and making a difference in the world. She's great. That'll be really fun here. Be wrong. Women kick. Yeah. Love it. Then third is Mitch Albom. Who Detroit Detroit resident now coming across the state to be with us. Right. You'd might not knowing from Tuesday's with more. But he's also written a handful of other bestsellers, and he will be here, December second and his presentation is why every life matters. And it's all about how anyone you meet in your life could be the one to change it in some way. I had no idea he was such a philanthropist. And so it was interesting. He's been on the list of the wishlist for the economic club for longtime. He's a kind of a coup to get even though he's local go Tigers get so many different angles with his sports reporting and also with books and his piece lots of appeal there do the next one to because it's the young professionals presentation are young professional speaker is Nick chef who is an author and recovering addict. And you might know him as the subject of the movie beautiful boy, which was very well received two thousand eighteen movie. And so he wrote a. Called tweak and at the same time. His dad wrote a book called beautiful boy and both of those books chronicle their experience of his addiction and recovery. And so he. His presentation is called tweak a harrowing, but hopeful portrait of addiction. So he'll put a personal face on that story about the opioid addiction crisis facing in our country and Michigan. February February eleventh very eleventh. Yes. And that is our why p special presentation that night. Anyone is welcome to come to that. If that's if that's a message that they're interested in. But we sure we'll talk about it a bit later, but we do this'll be the second year that we're focusing on young professionals memberships as well to bring in that demographic. And that's that's obviously a health angle. So on the grand Upton hall side for dinner. They'll be a panel discussion with local experts. Lake or spectrum where we're still we haven't announced the specific programming just the conceptual framework for those. So the right people bearing county health department folks like epic have some people on hand if. Needing help or someone to talk to. I will. Okay.

"Anyway, we don't know where we don't know the details, but we're going ahead with the state of the union address. Well, eight last night, we're not going ahead with the state of the union address. President Trump tweeted out that he'll he'll do the state of the union address when the shutdown is over. Okay. He said as the shutdown was going on Nancy Pelosi asked me to give the state of the union address. I agreed. She then changed her mind because of the shutdown suggesting a later date. This is her perogative. I will do the address when the shutdown is over. I am not looking for an alternative venue for the state of the union address because there's no venue that can compete with the history tradition. Importance of the house chamber. I look forward to giving a great state of the union address in the near future. It's a good thing. He'd ever caves in. That's great. Okay. Go. All right making a deal. Some good deals going on. I think right now. Oh, by the way in our at our pull yesterday, the key posted who has who is in. This is also a this is from Trump's statement who is the higher. I q person. Yeah. That's right is the higher. I q Persson. Eighty five percent Nancy Pelosi over Alexandria, Okaz yo Cortes, and people were very upset very upset that a beggar was not an option hundred something comments of just of just the bag of rock. Where's it? My back a rock top shin. Where should? Yeah. That would have been too easy. But I would have voted if I could have I would've voted Nancy Pelosi is what are sure. Yeah. She is somehow figured out how to be the most powerful woman. In the entire Washington. DC tire in the world house of representatives. So anyhow congrats to her on using what little she has in the gray matter that goal. Yeah. Fortunately, though, in addition to these two wonderful, and then we've got several women who are considering running for president. And in fact, are going to rent president from the democratic side in twenty twenty one of them is Elizabeth Warren, and she showed her what a high Q person. She is yesterday by talking about the branches of government. Here's a look the realistic and games that Republicans get two thirds of what they wanted Democrats have to settle for the shorter straw. Is. That is that. I mean, how the balance of power works. Let's talk about the balance of power, they'll Coequal branches of government, the president nited states and the congress. Okay. I really don't know. My gosh. Let's talk about that. There are two co equal branches of the government the congress and president wait there's three now that there's the house and the Senate and the president. That's what set right. Yes. Yeah. She she's at least she knew there were three Coequal branches. I I it's it's amazing. It's amazing another potential candidate for twenty twenty Joe Biden has some issues I guess with his constituents. Three weeks before the November election. He actually took the stage at Lake Michigan college for Representative. Fred Upton a long serving Republican who was in the toughest race of his career. Biden wasn't there to denounce Upton? He was there to help him. He in fact, he collected two hundred thousand dollars from the economic club of south western Michigan now to address the Republican leaning audience. They gave him two hundred thousand dollars. He showed up spoke for this for this. For this Republican. So a that's a huge payday, and the left can't stand that that he actually made serious money. How dare you make two hundred thousand dollars when there's people who don't make any money. How dare you? How dare you? He also they were also pretty stunned that he praised Upton, and they're really pissed off at him. Now. And sure enough Upton defeated his democratic challenger by four and a half percentage points. And I guess you could place part of the reason for that to place that blame with Joe Biden. And they are they're really upset with him. So I don't know if that's going to hurt him in his presidential race will probably forget about it by that. But I love the fact that there are some Democrats getting into this race that have really spiced up the race. Not the same old tired crowd that didn't turn to L gore this year..
